"It's two years since Big Chill's co-founder Pete Lawrence released his own unique brand of cinematic music on the debut Chilled By Nature Solar Powered EP. Championed by the likes of Laurent Garnier, Charles Webster, Pete Herbert, Chris Coco, Phil Mison and Tom Middleton as a forward looking statement of intent, it confirmed Pete's talent as a composer and arranger as well as festival organiser, writer and DJ. After another busy festival season, Pete returned to the studio for Musical Box. Something of a winter's fairytale, a calm and detached journey across a snowbound landscape, punctuated by a haunting glockenspiel theme, simple rhythm box and live horns. Dare we say it, almost christmassy. Label mate Bruce 'Alucidnation' Bickerton turn up the dub heat for his own remix, adding string pads, vocals and gently skanking guitar for another lesson from the lucid one. Of course, it's all about the Ulrich mix to close, as Schnauss pushes it to the outer reaches with his excursion on the version, full-on aural gymnastics for headphone freaks and box watchers, phase shifting and the by now trademarked MBV swathed backwards to the front production of the yuletide glockenspiel, adds large enough sub-bass and usual sound effects before the drums wade in for a final closing salvo."
