JAN DUKES DE GREY
Title:
Mice and Rats in the Loft
Label:
BREATHLESS
Format:
CD
Price:
$16.50
Catalog #:
BREATH 52001
"Jan Dukes De Grey -- Rare second album by one of the most legendary underground acoustic folk bands to come out of the UK in this era. Although the band released just two LPs, it achieved cult status and is considered responsible for spawning a whole new genre. Recorded for Transatlantic in 1971, Jan Dukes De Grey's second album was (despite the addition of drummer Denis Conlan) much more free-form than the first. While still essentially a folk album, the band's progressive leanings are far more pronounced, dissolving song structure and taking the audience on a wild, semi-improvised journey. Liner notes by David Tibet (Current 93)."

COMUS
Title:
First Utterance
Label:
BREATHLESS
Format:
CD
Price:
$16.50
Catalog #:
BREATH 52002
Delayed reissue of the first Comus album, originally issued in 1971. Includes the three tracks from the "Diana" single on Dawn. "Comus' first album contains an imaginative if elusive brand of experimental folk-rock, with a tense and sometimes distressed vibe. Although there are elements of traditional British folk music, there's an edginess to the songwriting and arrangements that would be entirely alien in a Fairport Convention or Pentangle disc. At times, this straddles the border between folk-rock and the kind of songs you'd expect to be sung at a witches' brew fest, the haunting supernatural atmosphere enhanced by bursts of what sound like a theramin-like violin, hand drums, flute, oboe, ghostly female backup vocals, and detours into almost tribal rhythms."

"Extremely rare 1969 British album available on CD for the first time! Electric blues with some psychedelic touches especially on the track 'Song To Katherine.' Most of the material was written by lead guitarist Jacklin except for three traditionals and a heavy Cream-like rendition of Alexis Korner's 'The Same For You.' An excellent varied blues rock album featuring Tommy Eyre, later of Mark-Almond and Pezband."

UNICORN
Title:
Uphill All the Way
Label:
BREATHLESS
Format:
CD
Price:
$16.50
Catalog #:
BREATH 52011
"In 1969, the members of British beat band Unicorn listened to the debut Crosby, Stills & Nash album and began transforming into a country-rock outfit. They began recording for the U.K. folk label Transatlantic, and a young producer was brought in (Hugh Murphy, who later produced Gerry Rafferty's 'Baker Street' hit). This debut album from 1971 is a blend of country, folk and rock music -- simple and uncluttered, mellow and soothing. In many ways it recalls early Kris Kristofferson or Gordon Lightfoot with a blend of the Byrds and the Band. Soon after this album's release, the band was discovered by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour who began sitting in with the band and producing their demos. Unicorn's
Uphill All The Way
is a long lost, but very worthwhile British folk rock classic."

Label:
BREATHLESS
Format:
CD
Price:
$16.50
Catalog #:
BREATH 52012
"This album, originally released in 1970 on Transatlantic, is made up of dark, foreboding music that touches upon the early prog scene (lots of organ, flute, electric guitar) but also throws in some folky passages and jazz experimentations as well. It is somewhat of a cross between bands like The Strawbs, Nektar, Jethro Tull, East of Eden, Atomic Rooster, and at times King Crimson."

Hailing from Wales, Quicksand played melodious, guitar-based progressive rock, which is better than many of the sought-after rarities in this field. ROBINSON, WANDA
Title:
Black Ivory

BREATHLESS
Format:
CD
Price:
$16.50
Catalog #:
BREATH 52020
"Baltimore jazz poet Wanda Robinson released
Black Ivory
(named for her backing band) in 1971 on the Perception label. The album paints a portrait of the artist as a (righteously) angry young woman, riffing on social mores, political injustices, and sexual politics. Produced by jazz composer and pianist Anthony Davis, the eleven cuts that make up
Black Ivory
are rooted by a chamber jazz group of piano, flute and saxes, bass, and drums."
