Title: Konrad BoehmerPosition/Il Combattimento/Ouroboros
Label: BVHAAST (NETHERLANDS)
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: BVHAAST 0504
All compositions by Konrad Boehmer. "'Position' (1961-1962) for 4-track tape, voices and orchestra, (performed by Radio Symphony Orchestra of the WDR, Cologne, Bruno Maderna - conductor). The basic notation for 'Position' is one of 'open' form which does not consist of the exchangeability of its parts but in the idiomatic structure of the composition. 'Il Combattimento' (1989) for orchestra with solo violin and solo cello. "Il Combattimento' is a dramatic concert piece for orchestra that includes solo violin and solo violoncello. It emphasizes this historic episode that precipitated the decline of medieval feudalism. 'Ouroboros' (2002) for solo piano (performed by Nicholas Hedges). 'Ouroboros' is one of the cryptic symbols of the alchemists: a serpent which begets and devours itself. 'Ouroboros' continues the expansion of my piano oeuvre and thus destroys the idea of a 'closed' group of works." --Konrad Boehmer

Title: The Passades - Volume 2 (His Masters Noise Volume 3)
Label: BVHAAST (NETHERLANDS)
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: BVHAAST 0505
A new work from Roger Doyle ( for electronics & transformed voices). Produced and composed by Roger Doyle. "I began Passades in early 2002 working with the creative possibilities of music software which captures sounds like a freeze-time video, making sound movement stop, or go forwards or backwards slowly. For raw material I used extracts (four seconds at a time) from previous compositions of mine which were fed into the software which would freeze them, and by mouse manipulation I would slowly move the material backwards and fowards onscreen to see if there was potential for keeping those particular extracts. On a trial and error basis I collected almost three hours of material in this way over a period of two and half years ... I have introduced the three 'Link/Separators' and a piece from 2000 'The Idea and its Shadow' as contrasting material ... There is an ancient voice in this music which seems to travel through the present into the future, then back again into the past." -- Roger Doyle, Spring 2005

Artist: VAN WISSEM, JOZEF
Title: A Rose By Any Other Name
Label: BVHAAST (NETHERLANDS)
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: BVHAAST 0606
Subtitled: Anonymous Lute Solos of the Golden Age. Jozef van Wissem - Renaissance lute. "The work of Dutch born composer and lute player Jozef van Wissem is based on application of mirror images in lute composition. The work is idiomatic to lute tablature of around 1600. The pieces on this recording exhibit a large musical variety, ranging from decidedly peasant dances to refined melancholic forms that were most likely intended for a more refined public. The black side to Elizabethan life in the mythic 'Golden Age' of prosperity, fed by anxieties of disease, religious intolerance and future pessimism resulted in a vogue for the cultural and literary Melancholy cult. It was believed that religious uncertainties caused by the English Reformation and a greater attention being paid to issues of sin, damnation, and salvation, led to this effect. The melancholy man, known to contemporaries as a 'malcontent,' is epitomized by Shakespeare's Prince Hamlet."

Title: Objects In Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear
Label: BVHAAST (NETHERLANDS)
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: BVHAAST 0905
First solo release by Van Wissem on Bvhaast, 2005 release. Performed by Jozef van Wissem (lute, airfield recordings, electronics), Arnold Marinissen (palindrome percussion on track 7). "Though Van Wissem draws inspiration from Renaissance period forms, the use of computer-edited airport recordings fixes these pieces firmly in the now, and his approach to the lute is such that this CD would not be out of place in the John Fahey section of your music collection. Dreamy, oblique and minimal, the music insinuates itself into the listener's mind like a subliminal message or an overheard snippet of conversation." --Pete Gershon, Signal to Noise

Title: Baby Grand
Label: BVHAAST (NETHERLANDS)
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: BVHAAST 1505
Roger Doyle (solo piano); Produced and composed by Roger Doyle. "Among my first piano compositions was Six Pieces for Pupils who Don't Like Exams. Baby Grand is the sixth of these and is composed for four hands (in this version I multitracked myself and used some double-speed recording techniques). ... Then in the 1980s I received two once-in-a-lifetime commissions ... The first was to compose music for a film by Irish film-maker Bob Quinn, called Budawanny. The music (which had to be piano music) was the play a central tole in this film, which was shot as a silent movie in black and white with captions appearing when people spoke. It required seventy minutes of music to be composed for it - uninterrupted by anyone talking over it (a composer's dream) ... The second commission was from Dublin's Gat Theatre to compose music for a production of Oscar Wilde's play Salome, which required a piano player onstage throughout the show, playing non-stop for almost tow hours. For this Baby Grand CD I have included five pieces from that suite, but have replaced 'Salome's Dance' with a new version recorded in concert in 2003. 'Mansard' is from a 5CD set called Babel which took me ten years to compose (1989-1999). Each track corresponds to a room within an imagined giant Babel tower." --Roger Doyle, Autumn 2005.

Title: Acousmatrix - History of Electronic Music I-II
Label: BVHAAST (NETHERLANDS)
Format: 2CD
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: BVHAAST 9001/2
Bvhaast's Acousmatrix series was originally released around 1990; a total of 7 releases (9 discs) that acted as some of he defining documents of early electronic and tape music. They were recently reissued as a complete 9CD boxset (BVHAAST 0206), or are now also available as separate volumes (in new 2006 designs that are quite striking and appropriate). "Composing and generating sound via computer technology as early as the mid-'60s, Gottfried Michael Koenig was a pivotal force in cementing the emerging relationship between music and electronics. Born in Magdeburg, Germany in 1926, Koenig studied composition at the Detmold School of Music before relocating to Bonn, where he pursued his interest in computer engineering. Between 1954 and 1964, he worked alongside Karlheinz Stockhausen at the electronic music studios of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) in Cologne, collaborating with other aspiring composers including Gyorgy Ligeti and Mauricio Kagel; in 1956, Koenig completed his first major electronic piece, 'Klangfiguren II,' followed a year later by 'Essay.' During the early '60s, Koenig began writing a program -- named simply 'Project 1,' or PR1 -- designed to compose and generate music via the computer; when in 1964 he accepted the position of creative director with the Institute for Sonology in Utrecht, Holland, he took the software with him, putting on the finishing touches three years later. While at Utrecht, Koenig also began experimenting with the Variable Function Generator, a machine developed by physics student Stan Tempelaars, able to generate sound using roughly the same technology as an analog sequencer. Hitting upon the idea of treating the VFG as an oscillator, between 1967 and 1969, Koenig used the machine to compose a series of groundbreaking pieces known collectively as the 'Funktionen.' In 1968, Koenig also began work on a second program, PR2; its complicated design made it difficult to use, however, and so PR1 remained his primary outlet for computerized composition. He continued tinkering with PR1 for years to follow, in 1978 introducing VOSIM oscillators to the project to create an extended program christened 'PRIX'; a series of subsequent additions resulted in another upgrade, 'PRIXM,' and the completion of 1979's 'Output.' When the Institute of Sonology was relocated to the Hague in 1986, Koenig retired from his post to focus full-time on computerized composition as well as developing new musical programs; in 1991, he also published the first in a series of theoretical writings titled Aesthetic Practice. Pieces here include [Disc 1] 'Klangfiguren II.' 'Essay,' 'Terminus I and II,' 'Output,' [Disc 2] 'Funktion Rot,' 'Funktion Grau,' 'Funktion Violett,' 'Funktion Blau,' 'Funktion Indigo.'"

Artist: FERRARI, LUC
Title: Acousmatrix - History of Electronic Music III
Label: BVHAAST (NETHERLANDS)
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: BVHAAST 9009
Third volume in the Acousmatrix series. "A lovely work of electro-acoustic music by one of the French pioneers of musique concrete, Petite Symphonie Intuitive Pour un Paysage de Printemps ('Little Intuitive Symphony for a Spring Landscape') recreates the composer's experiences during a climb toward sunset on the Causse Mejean, a high plateau in the Massif Central, including his recollection of a shepherd's flute and its reverberations across the landscape. The flute sounds and multiple echoes continue in changing musical modes throughout the piece (the tonic redefined by electronic drones), blending together with sounds of the countryside and conversational fragments from the human presence to create a beautiful sonic landscape of 25 minutes duration. 'Heterozygote' is a musique concrete composition realized on tape; it combines fragments of conversations and other sounds and noises from nature and daily life in an organized and poetic manner (although not plot-oriented). Bits of human speech in several languages are used both for their charm of meaning and their musical qualities of inflection and pitch. At one moment several people express how much they enjoyed having visited some unnamed place. At another moment a mysterious transformed voice chants 'dans un reve' (in a dream), but the accompanying sounds are more like the real creaks and crashes of a house in a windy storm, with intermittent disturbed cries from the sleeper. For the first time in a musique concrete work, the sounds are modulated and transformed but retain their natural character; the result is not abstract, but rather moves about the world with the ease of a thought or a dream. In the 'Presque Rien' (Almost Nothing) series of musique concrete pieces, Ferrari further developed this technique and sensibility with sounds and their interconnections that are almost unidentifiable, while nevertheless retaining a feeling of naturalness." --Blue Gene Tyranny, AMG

Artist: BERIO/BRUNO MADERNA, LUCIANO
Title: Acousmatrix - History of Electronic Music VII
Label: BVHAAST (NETHERLANDS)
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: BVHAAST 9109
Seventh volume in the Acousmatrix series. "In 1955, Luciano Berio and Bruno Maderna founded a Studio di Fonologia at a Milan radio station; it was the first electronic music studio in Italy. Berio became very active there, organizing concerts and also publishing a new music journal, both under the name Incontri Musicali. Berio explored the frontiers of sound, particularly vocal sound, thanks to his association with Cathy Berberian. She was willing and able to produce a remarkable variety of extended techniques with her voice, which she did with the utmost musicianship. Three pieces: 'Momenti,' 'Thema-Omaggio a Joyce' and 'Visage.' Bruno Maderna's celebrity in America was so short-lived that by 2004, Maderna's name was largely forgotten there, but not so in Europe, where he is yet regarded as one of the giants of post-war modernism. Two pieces: 'Le Rire' and 'Invenzione su una voce' feature Cathy Berberian."
