"More and more I have become convinced that one of the noblest things you can do in a piece of 'serious' music is to allow for an experience that can't happen in your everyday life. My piece is about the struggle to create beauty. A single very consonant chord falls slowly over the course of forty minutes. That is the piece. Every aspect of the piece is on display, however -- magnified, examined, amplified, prolonged. The soloist's notes are impossibly long, requiring frequent drop-outs for breath and for rest. The players are all instructed to play as quietly as possible, and then are amplified at high volume, in order to make their restraint an issue of the piece. An active environmentalist, Adams worked for several years as executive director of the Northern Alaska Environmental Center and has been a leader in the Green Party of Alaska. "Roger Luke DuBois is a composer, programmer and video artist living in New York City. He holds a doctorate in music composition from Columbia University and teaches interactive sound and video performance at Columbia's Computer Music Center, New York University, and the School of Visual Arts. He has done interactive programming and music production work for many artists, most recently Toni Dove, Chris Mann, Elliott Sharp and Michael Gordon. DuBois's 'Billboard' is a composite of all the Billboard #1 Hits from 1958-2000. DuBois analyzed all 857 songs digitally, and created a 'spectral average' -- a sonic summation of all frequencies in the song -- for each one. He then allocated each song 1 second for each week it was #1 on the charts. The resultant 37-minute-long piece contains beautiful washes of sound -- and serves as a unique chronicling of the history of US pop charts, and the songs' continually-changing longevity, tonality and production. DuBois applies this theory to two other classics -- Bach's 'Well-Tempered Clavier,' (both books in 5 minutes) and the entire soundtrack of Casablanca. A genius's redefinition of how we think about and listen to music, the resultant disc is and ambient masterwork. 'I didn't write this music, and I didn't curate this music.
