Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: CC 001CD
"The CD compilation which is not an album. 8 tracks + interludes + remixes from Akufen (Force Inc.), Dimbiman (Perlon), Isolee (Playhouse) And Noze (Circus Company). Ark, half angel, half devil... An artist who has never made any concessions and who will always stay authentic through out his work. After having released some EP's on quality labels such as Brif records, Karat, Perlon and Circus Company, Ark comes back to longer formats with alleluyark. It's the opening for Circus Company's solo series (CCS). This project gathers 3 EPs on which you will find all his influences, humor and diversity that make him one of the most interesting French electronic music artists. That's probably why he's been collaborating with such talented artists. From Pépé Bradock to Mr Oizo and Cabanne? All of them would agree on that point: Ark's got a unique sensibility in music."

Title: Craft Sounds and Voices
Label: CIRCUS COMPANY (FRANCE)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: CC 002CD
"Of electronic memory one never heard that! Forget the samples, better enter in a musical world populated of cardboard boxes, bottles, Scotch tape, racks, claps, mouths, hammers, brushes, reeds, spatulas of plaster... With the origin of Nôze refreshing universe, a singular duet full of references but creating a single style: harmonious mixture of electronics and acoustics, daring combination of voices and choruses, but also of instruments and craft sounds (guitars, clarinets, pianos, prepared pianos, hammers, boxes)... it's always grooving in the 11 pieces of the album all guided by a kick for the rhythmic. Singular, different but catchy: Nôze's tells the pleasure of composing like one writes with complete freedom, when effervescence succeeds the melancholy, humour with the grace, the improvisation with the rigorous control of the instruments. The pieces are well linked like many festive combinations and amusing innovations. To discover an organic album with a remarkable color and refrains. Listen to the birth of an eclectic duet with a proper style. Recognize the magic of a sound history when it starts."

Title: Some Eat It Raw
Label: CIRCUS COMPANY (FRANCE)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: CC 003CD
This is the CD version of the 2LP that came out in early 2006. This is the first full-length album from Montreal-based DJ and producer, Mossa (Jeremy Petrus). After having released on various labels such as Cynosure, Circus Company, Mo's Ferry Productions, Orac and Floppy Funk, Mossa became one of the most refreshing artists of the Montreal scene. With his uncompromising style of house music, Mossa convinces more and more auditors. Rhythmically solid and subjective, his sound is made from diverse sources collected here and there causing this composer to effectively transplant arrangements; some minimalist, most of them amusing, but rarely symmetrical. We can always feel a large range of inspiration in his music: jazz, folk, funk, house, glitch and minimal techno. Some Eat it Raw is a perfect example of his musical universe. The gathering of dirty, "rough" funk and nonconformist ways to turn grooves inside out is all he needs to turn you on. Tracks that you shouldn't miss: the subversive summer hit "Brazil '99," the Russian mountain ride on "Anagram," beautiful cello featuring his friend Godot on "Sure Kill." On this record you'll find tracks for dancing, chilling, screaming, laughing, kissing, running, crying, and to make a girl smile.

Title: How To Dance
Label: CIRCUS COMPANY (FRANCE)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: CC 004CD
Nôze is made up of the Parisian duo Nicolas Sfintescu (aka DJ Freak) founding member of Circus Company and Ezechiel Pailhès. This is their second full-length release. They are back with choruses, old stories and relentless post-digital refrains and with the energy of what they give into their live shows and even their basement compositions. One year after their brilliant Craft Sounds & Voices, they have constructed their outstanding follow-up to their European tour. How to Dance is composed of new incitements to run straight to the dancefloor, with skillful trance, chiming pianos, raging beats and fun ambulistic melodies. These are refrains that engrave themselves on the brain, and grooves that take over the body like a viral disease. How To Dance restores the most festive part of the electro scene through a positively dancefloor album: let's shake!

Artist: DAVE AJU
Title: Open Wide
Label: CIRCUS COMPANY (FRANCE)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: CC 005CD
This is San Francisco producer Dave Aju's debut full-length release, including a bonus remix by Luciano. After three amazing EPs on Circus Company, including the underground hit "Be Like The Sun," he has really outdone himself this time with his most conceptual and personal, yet accessible work to date. The album was made entirely with sounds from his mouth, but it's no novelty affair -- these are all wonderful pieces of music, covering a variety of styles. "Roundabout" starts things off with fat, shuffling drums, an infectious bass line, and a vocal refrain that builds into a "horn-section" crescendo -- straight from Chicago via Aju's mouth. "Bump" is a fun and futuristic approach to hip-hop storytelling with a "bumpity-bump" bass. "Crazy Place" is an homage to disco, pop, and wave styles, but Aju's version takes it to the next level -- pulsing LFOs, "live" mouth percussion, and a chorus and breakdown guaranteed to melt hearts and dancefloors worldwide. Next up is "First Love," a super-deep and soulful house track with spoken word connecting Aju's personal music history, referencing song titles up to this moment -- pure class. "Tapatio" shifts back to his raw party side with huge sub-bass, sick bleepy synth hits, and playful vocal cut-ups. The title track follows, bringing a crazy broken reggaeton-style groove, complete with clattering teeth percussion, squeaky funk synth riffs, and a dark and lovely chorus. "Anyway" is Aju's take on an uplifting house music anthem, recalling Lil'Louis with Sun Ra Arkestra vocals. "With You" closes the album on a slow and sweet note, bubbling over with smooth synths, warm bass, and some of the most tasteful vocoder work around, on a 21st century Roger and Zapp love tip. Open Wide, friends -- Dave Aju has arrived.

Title: Circus Company #5
Label: CIRCUS COMPANY (FRANCE)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: CC 005EP
"The Circus Company are back again with two new members: Mossa and Dave Aju, who will both release a solo ep on Circus Company in the next months. A1/ Mossa: 'Bucolik' Montréal-based, Mossa's track gathers voicy cuts and jumping grooves. A2/ Dave Aju: 'Drivethru'. Coming from San Francisco, Dave Aju infiltrates various genre-strict circles and exposes unexpecting heads to his sound with results varying from frustration to salivation. Sometimes minimal, sometimes vegetarian, his music is equally concerned with headscratching and ass shaking. B1/ Cabanne: 'Circam' is a loopy track deep minimal track, perfect to spin! B2/ Kean & 16: 'Transit' Kean with his mate 16 delivered a brilliant minimal house track full of warm groovy synths. This track might the more original of the whole EP. Their groove is unexpected and so tasty."

Title: Snuggle & Slap
Label: CIRCUS COMPANY (FRANCE)
Format: 2CD
Price: $21.00
Catalog #: CC 006CD
Celebrating 10 years of refining its highly personal vision of underground electronic dance music, Paris' Circus Company presents Snuggle & Slap, a 2CD compilation balancing contemporary house music with more idiosyncratic submissions. It's more than just a label sampler: many of the artists included here appear two or even three times, having been afforded the opportunity to think beyond the dancefloor and experiment with new sounds, unusual styles, and secret passions. Hushed funk, feathery beats and spongy textures characterize the "Snuggle" CD, while "Slap" snaps to attention with more insistent grooves straight to the heart of the label's sweet spot: sumptuously detailed, swoon-worthy deep house. Whether you've been following Circus Company for the whole decade or are only just now turning on, this collection of new, exclusive material is an essential portrait of one of the most dynamic labels around. Who's on board? There are veterans from the label's very earliest days, including Ark, Nôze, Dave Aju and Sety. There are folks that have joined in recent years, enlarging the label's sound along with its roster: dOP, MyMy, Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts, Audio Werner, Antislash, Oleg Poliakov, and Le K., and finally, there are the most recent freaks to join the Circus: Ryan Crosson, Nicolas Jaar, and Homewreckers. There are also a few familiar faces hidden behind names that might be new to you: Ezechiel Pailhes, who contributes a touching sketch for piano and voice, is one half of Nôze; Destination Danger is the pairing of Oleg Poliakov and Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts, and together they come up with one of the album's most driving and hypnotic tracks. These tracks go far deeper than the bongos-and-keyboards model of so much current "deep house." An emphasis on live instrumentation, acoustic samples and subtle vocals keeps the sound warm and supple across both discs.

Artist: GUILLAUME & THE COUTU DUMONTS
Title: Breaking The Fourth Wall
Label: CIRCUS COMPANY (FRANCE)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: CC 007CD
This is the second album by Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts. Since releasing his debut album on the Musique Risquée label in 2007, the Montreal-born Berliner has released a steady stream of EPs, remixes and compilation tracks for Circus Company, Oslo, Cocoon and many more. Throughout, he's developed one of the most distinctive styles in contemporary house music -- a deep, powerful and original fusion of Afro-Latin percussion, instrumental melodies, soulful vocals, and intricate rhythm programming. With Breaking The Fourth Wall, he takes another big step forward. From dark-and-stormy basement jams to Ethiopian-tinged fantasias, from Afrobeat to ambient house, this album finds Guillaume venturing far beyond the limits of 4/4 boompty-boompty. He set himself the added challenge of making the album sound as much like the work of a live band as possible. To do so, he availed himself of a close community of musician friends, beginning with dOP, recording in their Paris studio. Dave Aju recorded the vocals for "On The Lips" in his San Francisco studio. Switzerland/Zaire's Dynamike brings an Afro-beat feel to "Radio Novela." Guillaume's longtime collaborators Marc-André Charbonneau, Sébastien-Arcand Tourigny and Nicolas Boucher all feature on various tracks, playing guitar, saxophone and Rhodes. Even Guillaume's brother turns up on guitar on "Discothèque." Together, these and other ferociously talented musicians help translate Guillaume's musical vision into a living, breathing, collective effort. While the DJs will have plenty to keep them busy, the album takes many turns, slipping into a slow 6/8 shuffle on "Discothèque" and digging into a kind of dub-cumbia on "Radio Novela"; "Intermede" and "Unwelcomed" both explore murky atmospheres swirling with organ and sampled acoustic instruments. It's that acoustic element that gives Breaking The Fourth Wall such uncommon depth. Muted synthesizers and unobtrusive drum machines are the glue and staples holding together a panoramic collage of saxophones, congas, piano, Rhodes, Hammond organ, choral passages, preachers' vocals, brushed drumming and more. It's all polished off with killer hooks and vocals you might call subliminal, they burrow so deep into your head. Guillaume blurs the lines between sampling and composition, between machines and acoustic instruments, between the nightclub and the living room. Put it on and witness a new musical world coming sharply into focus -- no 3D glasses required.

Title: Greatest Hits
Label: CIRCUS COMPANY (FRANCE)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: CC 008CD
dOP, the Parisian trio of Clément, Dam, and JAW, have been on a tear since they burst upon the scene, riling up dancefloors with their strange, sexy, infectious brand of irreverently soulful house, and leaving writers scratching their heads at the same. Resident Advisor's Todd Burns came closest to getting it right when he credited them with "trying to reenergize house music with horns, roses, vodka and a whole lot of vocals." Greatest Hits does all that and more. The title is deliberately misleading: aside from the opening track, reprised from their first EP, this is all new material, and it's a deeper, more deviant dOP than you've ever heard before. The three musicians aren't just great showmen but also real musicians: before discovering house music, they played rock, jazz, hip-hop, reggae, classical, and African music, and they bring that wealth of knowledge to bear in their quest to turn dance music inside out. So while the record has plenty of slinky funk and dirty grind, it also explores far more diverse moods and grooves, from hot jazz to autumnal, orchestral folk. Some of the richness of Greatest Hits can be credited to Emmanuel d'Orlando, a French composer and arranger known for his work in theater, soundtracks, and with artists like Sebastian Tellier. His arrangements, performed by the Macedonian Radio Symphonic Orchestra, lend much of the album the darkly cinematic feel of a Sofia Coppola film. Down in their basement studio, the three musicians used virtually every instrument they own -- horns, pianino, Chinese flute, harmonica, melodica, cajon, gongs, cuica, analog synthesizers, acoustic drum kit -- and many of their friends stopped by to contribute. Parisian minimal techno producer Seuil mans the computer on one track, and Guillaume Coutu Dumont sits in on balafon. Greatest Hits is definitely not just club music -- it's a snapshot of the dizziest years of these talented miscreants' lives, festooned with horns, roses, vodka, and a whole lot of soul. Cover art by Tom & Léo and Myqua.

Artist: JAAR, NICOLAS
Title: Space Is Only Noise
Label: CIRCUS COMPANY (FRANCE)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: CC 009-2CD
Second edition with amended tracklisting (the track "I Got A Woman" has been deleted). Four years after his debut EP on Wolf + Lamb, Nicolas Jaar, the New Yorker by way of Chile returns to Circus Company with Space Is Only Noise, an uncompromising manifesto on traces of the past, love lost, and spectres of the future. Jaar has made it quite apparent over the course of his nascent catalog and increasingly sought-after live sets that challenge is an intrinsic part of his creative discourse. Few are the producers of any age with the guts to ride a sub-100-bpm tempo at peak-time in the techno Mecca of Berlin, and fewer still are those who receive an ecstatic hands-in-the-air response for their precocious efforts. It is precisely this sense of risk which elevates Space Is Only Noise beyond the realm of valiant first effort or crossover dance music oddity. Those looking to wade through the sea of Jaar's potential influences will quickly find themselves in the deep waters of golden age Factory records, the home-spun digitalism of Mille Plateaux, Endtroducing-era DJ Shadow and Eric Satie. Jaar gently coaxes his listener into the experience from the opening sounds of rolling waves on "être," but quickly transitions into the sophisticated percussion and meandering melodies that characterize his sound. Jaar seeks, and often finds, beauty in melancholy on the first few tracks of the album. As the album begins to accelerate with "Too Many Kids Finding Rain In The Dust," Jaar confronts us with the often forgotten reality that our sadness is not mutually exclusive on the dancefloor. Suddenly, on "Keep Me There," Jaar's voice appears over the delicious, rumbling melody. Though your hips stir to the relentless bass line and the sexiness of the voices, your heart is jolted out of its luxurious malaise when horns erupt seconds later. "How can you talk about a landscape without showing the sky and the earth?" a voice asks, translating from the French on "être." So Jaar concludes, revisiting the same track to end the album. Complete landscapes such as these are only realized in contrast -- the indulgent against the reserved, the sky against the earth; lightness and darkness. Space Is Only Noise is a tour de force with few modern equals, and a great sign of things to come from one of electronic music's most exciting producers.

Title: Alleluyark part 1
Label: CIRCUS COMPANY (FRANCE)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: CCS 001EP
"Ark is opening the ball of the Circus Company's solo series with a brand new fresh EP: Alleluyark vol.1. The volume 1 is representative of his versatile and authentic work: a melting pot of various influences. He leads us to his fonky craziness with 'satanark' on which we can feel a snake charmer vibe. In 'Sweet Chat Rio' he goes straight into the darkness with percussive grooves. Both sides are ended by 133,3 bpm loops. Flip over for Akufen's remix of 'e-cône' : Brilliant! Hope you'll all enjoy theses new tracks from the number one godfather of French minimal house."

Title: Alleluyark vol_3
Label: CIRCUS COMPANY (FRANCE)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: CCS 003EP
"The first track is one of the most dancefloor of the alleluyark project. 'Miss Tic' is a straight minimal funky track, its only aim is grooving. The rmx by Nôze keeps the minimal and dancefloor aspect at the beginning but ends with a no joking solo between freejazz and funk. 'The Lost And Losoul rmx' is a real electro but not retro remix. On this track you can hear the mythical snare from Losoul most famous tracks with some eruption from Ark's world. As we have here a definitely dancefloor EP, Ark decided to put an unreleased track. 'Car Hibou' is more looking like other Ark's track dance-y and crazy with many incredible events."

Artist: NOZE
Title: EP1
Label: CIRCUS COMPANY (FRANCE)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: CCS 006EP
"This record is the first of a series from Nôze, Organizing an 'avant garde meeting', beyond the concepts already in place....forget about nu-jazz, trip-hop, house, or techno. From the most dancefloor song (Canicule) passing by click and bleep style (Outamimonclic) to a very melancholic ballade (Newlyn), Nôze are showing a new sight of jazz through electronic music. Are Nôze the ultimate 'Electrofree' fusion? A record which gives another idea of what electronic music can bring to improvised music. And mutually. A record where are confronting the acoustics of instruments (piano, prepared piano, clarinet, saxophone...) -- and the synthetic of data processing. That is to say the unpredictable vitality of the one confronted with the clockwork regularity of the other one. The objective does not aim at technical perfection where everything is clearly expressed, it plays with the suggestion, the unspoken, the imagination."

Artist: AYSAM
Title: Rolling Door
Label: CIRCUS COMPANY (FRANCE)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: CCS 008EP
2004 release. "Aysam is a 24 year-old house music producer from Paris who produces a gender cross between house, '80s funk & hip-hop. Originally coming from the hard techno scene, Aysam isn't on his first production shot...His techno roots are mostly coming from strong twisted up techno like Cristian Vogel or Jamie Lidell. He released two EPs on Cosmetic rec and a track on the Karat various artists compilation. Check out 'Rolling Door,' it's a real travel into the spaceway of fonk. From the beginning 'till the end, it keeps on going up and up and up-- like a rocket ! On side B, heavy dirty house lovers would certainly play that 'l'échappée.' On the first listening, your ears will pop out! But the more you'll listen to it, the more you'll be addicted to its psychedelic turns."

As a teaser to his upcoming debut album Some Eat It Raw, Montreal-based Mossa introduces a highly versatile 4 tracker combining the best of his trademark style: an eclectic minimal mix of rhythm and kick, plastic and static, amusing and rarely symmetrical all at the same time. Artist: DAVE AJU
Title: The Tables Turn
Label: CIRCUS COMPANY (FRANCE)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: CCS 013EP
"Dave Aju continues his exploration of unusual sound sources and recording techniques that again results in a uniquely fresh and powerful sound. While the music on his Unorthodoctor EP harnessed a wide variety of external and environmental sounds via field recordings, The Tables Turn is a more focused, internal and personal set, inspired by Aju's American Indian, hip-hop and jazz roots and, most importantly, his undying love for the turntable and vinyl medium. On 'Xibalbanasazi,' track A1, Aju's native roots are very apparent. The relentless percussion and huge bass hits are all derived from recordings of the mechanical components of a Technics 1200, but the track, however, is a very warm, organic, and almost tribal jam punctuated by bits of clay flute and percussive breakdowns that will shake any floor into a frenzy. A2 sees Paris mad scientist Krikor rework 'Xibalbanasazi' into an all-out electro funk storm that compliments the original perfectly. On the flip, 'Runout' is a seriously banging homage to Chicago's finest, complete with jacking drums, sliding minimal keys, and fiercely provocative vocals. The title refers to the runout groove of a record which was used as the sole sound source for the track, while MC 101 flips the term into hilarious rhymes about people who don't support new, cutting edge music until it's trendy and fashionable."

Title: The Nightwalker's Discovery
Label: CIRCUS COMPANY (FRANCE)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: CCS 054EP
This is Seuil's debut on Circus Company, showcasing his versatile approach. "Rain On The Circus" a has moody, slow house vibe. The complex drumming of the futuristic "Nightwalker" reaches deep into sonic space, where daunting bass lines produce a pulsating rhythm. "Heartbreaker" moves into a different emotional direction: with its light and diaphanous melodies, the track is full of hope and optimism. As a perfect conclusion to the EP, "Nazareth" feels like sound fragments waving from a distant party.

Artist: JAAR, NICOLAS
Title: Space Is Only Noise
Label: CIRCUS COMPANY (FRANCE)
Format: LP
Price: $21.00
Catalog #: CCS 055-2LP
LP version.

Artist: AQUARIUS HEAVEN
Title: 7 Days
Label: CIRCUS COMPANY (FRANCE)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: CCS 056EP
Damian and Clement of dOP fame return to Circus Company with a new project of dubbed-out late night madness featuring vocalist Brian Brewster. Far more sinister then dOP's previous output, this EP features 4 tracks which explore an acidic realm of dark ruminations and swamp-dredged rhythms. Aquarius Heaven starts things off with a Basic Channel-esque wash of chords, noise and spoken-word. There's also a chopped and screwed take on Italo and a track that sounds like an outtake from Kool Keith's Dr. Octagon.
