This 2CD compilation is the beginning of a yearly series and is a representative selection of established Connaisseur artists as well as up-and-coming new members of the label's roster. "Grand Cru" is a term used in the wine business and normally denominates a special wine, which is made from the best grapes of both one wine-producing area and one vintage. The stylistic diversities featured on this compilation aren't less refined and versatile. CD1 features artists such as Afrilounge, with an elegantly lowered house groove and Jochen Trappe, setting the benchmark with his glitch-rock tech. Daso teams up with his ingenious partner, Pawas to make even the most lame couch potato taste their own very special Beaujolais and freak out on the dancefloor. Furthermore, Ripperton bares his Detroit soul with a special track that makes everyone's heart beat and the legs boogie. Needless to say, Connaisseur's old school techno preachers Plasmik are also on board with a crunchy and massively deep groover while Girrèsse & Erb and Estroe & ZoëXenia manage to come up with tracks interwoven with smooth vocals. Pele is a highly promising producer talent who had his debut on Connaisseur with a compact gem. CD2 is a joyous melding of all these sounds and more, mixed by the inimitable Patrick Chardronnet. Connaisseur Recordings proudly presents the second edition of the annual label compilation, Grand Cru. This year's vintage, Grand Cru 2008, captivates not only with subtle, deep and more complex flavors, but also shows the whole bandwidth of the Connaisseur family's taste in music. 2007's compilation was a pleasurable success which was proven by being ranked as 11th best compilation of the year in Germany's Groove magazine. Along with this, the Grand Cru Tour stopped in the best European clubs like the Watergate (Berlin), Loft (Barcelona), Propaganda (Moscow), Doornroosje (Nijmegen), and Club Q (Zurich), always packing a wonderful audience and excessive vibes. Grand Cru 2008 offers a brilliant mélange of known artists from the Connaisseur roster like Patrick Chardronnet, Ripperton, Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Daso, Sebastian Roya and two wonderful ladies from the Netherlands: Estroe and ZoëXenia. Apart from that, Connaisseur presents new outstanding talents like Art Bleek, Andrès Garcìa, Wareika and Federleicht. Since Grand Cru stands for a marriage of the finest grapes, the 2008 vintage again captivates with a great variety of exquisite electronic music, which has been compiled not only for the dancefloor but also for home enjoyment. It's almost a tradition to say that CD2 features a free bonus mix and this year, it has been compiled and mixed by label impresario Alex Flitsch, who presents a deep trip of upcoming pearls and highlights from the Connaisseur back catalog. "Patrick Chardronnet's 'Eve By Day' -- I guess, not many words are necessary to introduce this amazing track, our first release, our first hit. In respect of this lovely tune we compiled the remix EP with three outstanding interpretations. Ripperton's lovelee dae mix is the version closest to the original. Ripperton invited the professional musician Sasha Unger into his Studio to play the wonderful 'Eve By Day' theme live, with bass & guitar. The result is gorgeous and adds a touch of elegance to the original -- classy! Fairmont's mix puts the theme into a completely new arrangement. Enormously deep, spankingly bassy and with two great hands-in-the-air-breaks. This will be a massive club hymn. Ripperton's epic mix was more of a joke at first, but we all fell in love with it after hearing it the first time. Not intended for the club, a track like a wonderful movie soundtrack, very classical and full of great emotions."

"Daso, our newest signing, is one of the world's most charming maniacs. Born in Poona (India), he was raised up in Lower Saxony and now lives in Cologne. He already gained fantastic reputation through his releases on Traum's housy sublabel MBF. His first release on Connaisseur will feature his more techno-oriented side, without losing his melancholic, beautiful and extremely kickin' sound. We are very happy to welcome Daso with his awesome three-tracker on Connaisseur and suggest everyone to check out his live act. He is a real rocker behind the laptop; skilled clubbers from Zurich to Tokyo can confirm this. 'Sam N'Max' is a deep rumbling techno track with a mindblowing bellish sequence and snappish hi-hats. It's the perfect match for a sweaty peak time techno workout. 'Beneath A Steel Sky' is the B2 track. The queen of German minimal, Anja Schneider, called it 'Mädchen-Techno' and damn she is right!"

"Jochen Trappe is back on the map and his message is clear: the summer is over; it's time to go nasty!! Jochen features three completely freaked out tunes somewhere between techno, electro and nut-house -- sophistically arranged and straight into your face. 'Bypass' is an electro-ish techno track with big Beverly Hills Cop synth riffs and absolutely surprisingly weird and kicking killer-passages. One for the big floors. 'Crosstalk' is deeper but not less crazy. A straight pumping groove accompanied with a soaring sequence, bleepish ear candy sounds and some undefinable croaks set your brain to holiday and your body in rhythmic twitches. 'Flux Line' is the real weirdo on this release."

With Anja Schneider mix. "Plasmik are the brothers Roman and Marcel Fritz. Both originate from Black Forest's finest city Freiburg, located close to the Swiss border. In the middle of the '90s they got infected with the dry, deep and organic techno, which was imported from the USA at that time. They started to buy records and to produce with simple sequencers and drum computers. Then, however, came the time when both went different ways. Roman studied classical guitar, whereas Marcel moved to Berlin to visit the University of the Arts. In 2006, the brothers hooked up with each other again in Berlin and continued where they stopped ten years before. Since then they are on the quest for that timeless sound, which fascinated both in their musical past so lastingly. The first results of their promising reanimated collaboration are the tracks 'Eight To Nine' and 'Ahead.'"

"Ripperton from Lausanne in the French part of Switzerland drops his second release on Connaisseur. For our last release on Connaisseur in 2006, he saved two outstanding tunes, full of personal emotions and timeless creativity. 'Tainted Words' is a killer club hymn combining two mesmerizing parts. The first part starts surprisingly minimal, straight and captivates with almost jazzy melodies. Part two starts with a sudden break: A weird melody crawls up and when the beat comes back, a massive bassline starts to rumble and turns the track into an acid-drenched sawtooth monster. 'Tainted Words (Plasmik Remix)' is deeper than the Mariana Trench. Plasmik, our new boy wonders from Berlin, grab the outstanding original, vivisect it and recompose it into a deep underwater journey somehow classic but very up to date though. A must for lovers of deep Detroitish cuts. 'Farra' is far more than a track. Ripperton specially dedicated this one to his family and his closest circle of friends. A very personal and pleasant sound-trip, more a song than a track -- a short emotional story-teller."

Rekleiner's second strike for Connaisseur is called Los Caminos, offering two mesmerizing cuts of the deepest forms of electronic club music. Rekleiner is a collaboration between Stuart Geddes, Anthony Middleton & Luca Saporito. All three of them are players within the London underground club scene, and Luca and Anthony are also known as Audiofly. "Q Onda" is a meandering ride through advanced soundscapes. Things evolve gradually, spurred on by a steady kick and an almighty rumbling bassline. "Dos Caminos" starts with an ultra-deep groove, the track slowly growing into an atmospheric epic. The dubby sounds slowly morph into a desolate after hour beauty.

Daso is back with his third release on Connaisseur. This newest output has a specific theme: tinnitus. Daso kicks asses with the A-side, and heralds the open-air beach party season with the B-side. "Tinnitus" is a rumbling techno machine -- a ringing sound sidles through a dull echo chamber -- like tinnitus. This track will cause states of raving emergency on the dancefloor. "Pars Tensa" features a knobbly but hypnotic acid bass line matched with a Spanish guitar. Outstanding.

The high priests of jackin' Afro-tech return with an impressive release. Florian Schirmacher, Henrik Raabe and Jakob Seidensticker are the voice of Wareika, finding common ground on the dancefloor by pushing bass lines, synthesizing emotions and by using emotive vocals. "Impulse" sounds like Carl Craig and a snake charmer having drinks at a grubby jazz bar. "Be Real" is a deep Chicago affair. Smoothly jackin', it draws you into a sea of meandering synths -- truly soulful.

Mutant Clan is Timo Maas and his Italian production partners Sante Pucello aka Santos and Alessandro Salvatori. This is an impulsive drum affair that features sample work, cut-up vox and a catchy melody. Pele's track is a blend of tom-tom groove, melodies and levitating vocals. Irresistible and hypnotizing.
