Contexterrior presents
Black Pearl
by Berlin's
Marjorie Migliaccio
aka
Bloody Mary
-- not only is it her debut full-length, but it also the first artist album to appear on the label in its 7-year history. Mary presents 11 tracks that explore techno, melodic ambience and haphazard breakbeats, resulting in an album that stays true to the spirit of Contexterrior: dancefloor expediency balanced with unapologetic experimentalism. Marjorie Migliaccio began her DJ career in her homeland of France in the early part of the decade, and by 2005, established a reputation that brought her to some of Europe's biggest clubs. After relocating to Berlin, she began her interest in production, leading to a pair of EPs on Sender Records, and becoming a true international DJ, touring throughout North and South America. She soon met
Sierra_Sam
of ToysForBoys Records, who released more of her work, including her first mix CD,
Tanz Mit Mir
(TFBRC 002CD). Anyone who has seen Bloody Mary work the dancefloor knows that she is more than just a skillful DJ; she is a personality, a force. And with
Black Pearl
, the case is no different. Mary's charm infuses every track, finding light within the shadows. More than just a slap-dash collection of tracks, this album is woven together by a common theme: discovering beauty buried beneath the darkness. This idea of contrast was inspired by the poetry of
Charles Baudelaire
, especially
Les Fleurs du Mal
(
The Flowers of Evil
), originally published 1857. In this controversial work, the poet used symbols (jewels, alcohol, lesbians, vampires) to express greater themes of erotic love, decadence and mortality. The title track (also the album's first single) perfectly captures the spirit of Baudelaire, with its dynamic, storming beats contrasted by smooth, cinematic strings. What's more, her international perspective has informed the music, with the Detroit debris of "Duellum" and the Latin flavor of "Sed Non Satiata." With production help from Sierra_Sam and label boss
Jay Haze
, plus contributions from
Argenis Brito
,
Danton Eeprom
and
Jona
, Mary has rounded up an assortment of diverse tracks that manage to cohere into a bigger picture.

"On its fifth EP, Amsterdam-based Contexterrior introduces Mr. E. Minimal -- a pseudonym that will serve as a cloak of disguise for different artists and collaborations in the label's upcoming releases. Uniting the various projects is a shared vision: to push the boundaries of dancefloor-centered music further into the realms of experimentation and complexity. In the absence of any extraneous identifiers, this record will become known by its sound, and its sound only. Four tracks of advanced minimalism in which innovatively processed vocal snippets become the missing link between sharp percussion and lingering atmospherics -- the outside cuts to shake the floor, the inside cuts to perplex the minds. Contexterrior is a platform geared at bringing sub bass, click and glitch heavy music to your bedroom and the dancefloor."

CNTXT 008.5EP
A limited re-press of the second part of the collaborative double-EP by Ricardo Villalobos and Jay Haze from 2004 (part 1 is Context 008); originally released in 2005. "Twisted flavors and electronic psychedelia. A welcome revisit of past work from two innovative producers whose music straddles the line between practical dancefloor tracks and artful compositions. Although their cosmic connection dates back years before, Ricardo Villalobos and Jay Haze first met in person in New York City in 1999. Wearing a TuningSpork Records T-shirt, Jay showed up to see Ricardo DJ one night, and Ricardo approached him to mention that he was a fan of the label. Jay responded that he was in fact the co-owner, and the two have been buddies ever since. Establishing themselves in Berlin in the early part of the new millennium, they shared a studio space together, which naturally led to some musical collaboration. Not too long after their original release in the summer and autumn of 2004, the twin EPs have been out-of-print and hard to obtain, until now. Contexterrior brings you the reissue of both 12"s, featuring six co-productions highlighted by their consistent quality within a variety of sounds: tasty acid elements, deep soulful moments, and the trademark sub-bass and buzz guaranteed to put any club subwoofer to work."

"This fourth 'versus' vinyl is a slight change from previous three. For this release, Ricardo Villalobos and Jay Haze collaborated to bring the record to your DJ bag. An artistic tandem jump if you will, the a1 is a melancholic summer hit. Melodic and deep filled with endless progression and relentless syncopation. This one is bound for the special moments when the party needs an extra kick. B1 -- 'Cactus Love' -- is a floor stomper. 4 to the floor bass killer with the kind of sound design one can expect from Villalobos and Haze. Minimal funk in every possible way. The closing track -- 'Archive' -- is a delicate techno-blues track. An after-party killer wrapped in reverbs and in your face bass lines."

"This special treat features four exclusive songs from Contexterrior Media core artists. This is an eclectic mind bending EP, for sure. Dapayk (Mo's Ferry) turns in a minimal mover that doesn't stop with time. One of Dapayk's master works. Matt John (of Textone fame) delivers a perfect song for the afterhours, sure to make anyone on substances even higher. Look out for Matt Johns' full length coming on Perlon early autumn. Fark (who did the newest Textone) hails from Zurich; this duo is reeking havoc on the Danchatine club at least once a month making us realize that Zurich is a place of innovations -- pumpin' bass, weird atmosphere. Will kill a dancefloor. Jay Haze hits you off with a slippy-slidey mental piece. By the end of the song your ass will be moving for sure -- if you are sitting down.... well you will be lost somewhere in space. A killer 12" to show that Contexterrior still reigns supreme in the exp. techno world."

"Time for a new bomb on Contexterrior, after a little break and a special compilation series we bring you some fresh new talent from Noddingham, England. He is a 23 year old prodigy promptly named Inxec. The sound is extremely advanced, crowd pleasing and has enough craziness to blow some minds -- bass is throbbing on all songs, clickity -- clacky percussions move the groove, as you sit and wonder --'where did he come from?' This release is truly alien, some might call it cold -- but nonetheless extremely powerful. The first cut 'Bittersweet' sports an amazing mood, huge bass-line and breakdowns guaranteed to throw the club into a frenzy. This song is receiving huge support and being regularly played by DJs like Jay Haze and Ricardo Villalobos. Inxec does it as if he was one of the founding fathers -- reverbed madness, spooky mood, and a total disregard for pop music. This is a well-rounded EP, sure to be one of the hottest records of the year."

Part 2 of this series. "This is a 2-part continuing series, featuring CONTEXT 16 and 16.5 as part of the same concept. In a short amount of time, Inxec has managed to create a sound entirely unto his own, with a touch of experimentalism mixed perfectly with dab of funk -- all the little sounds and fx are extremely well thought out and meticulously placed to have that exact cacophonic effect typical of Contexterrior! Inxec's sound can best be described as crazy, bubbling madness, built especially for intense dancefloors. Inxec has garnered lots of attention with his first release on Contexterrior making it a favorite for DJs such as Francious K, Magda, Troy Pierce, Rich Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos and many others."

Drifting On/Drifting Edit
Label:

CNTXT 021EP
"Miss Fitz, who is indeed unmarried, although not of Anglo-Norman heritage as her surname might suggest, has made quite an impressive mark in the world of minimal techno since appearing on the scene in 2006. After several EPs and tracks for a number of respected labels, Berlin-based Miss Fitz joins the Contexterrior crew for the release of 'Drifting On.' A regular feature in her own DJ sets as well as label boss Jay Haze's since late 2007, this is undoubtedly the most requested track to be released on Contexterrior in recent memory, as fans have been sending endless emails and MySpace messages demanding to know when it will be released on wax.
With 'Drifting On', Miss Fitz holds a séance for the high priestess of soul, crafting a seemingly pure and simple (but deceptively so) slow-burner. The carefree lyrics are delivered by a comforting alto voice, repeated in contrast with the looming synth pads that form a somber, meditative tremolo. She tastefully processes the vocals while gradually introducing more percussive elements, resulting in a powerfully soothing groove that manages to capture a multitude of moods within its extended duration. On the flipside, Fitz takes a more playful approach with 'Drifting Edit', splicing up the vocals and effortlessly integrating them with the housier beats. It's still smooth and mellow like the original, but with a sunnier vibe and a more assertive flair, geared toward the feet rather than the head."

"The UK's Chris Sylvester returns to Contexterrior for his fifth EP as Inxec, with three tracks that showcase his ability to combine pure dancefloor energy with spellbinding mental acrobatics. In just a few years, Chris Sylvester has gained a reputation for his productions of nearly unparalleled hypnotic quality. Aside from his output on the Contexterrior label, Sylvester uses the alias B-Pole (Leftroom, Four:Twenty) and is half of the duo Sound Alliance (Renaissance). But Inxec is the name behind his most spellbinding affairs -- after hearing his new EP, you will understand why in certain countries, his music is classified as a narcotic and banned. Aside from his remixes for Adultnapper, Akiko Kiyama, and Michal Ho, this is the first Inxec release since last year's
Flip Beat
EP, and not a tick too soon. With the smooth and bouncy 'You Were Always,' the atonal space jazz of 'Pesto Pasta,' and the alkaline-infused 'Evula,' Inxec offers three distinct variations of his trademark weirdness in 21 minutes. Sufferers of tinnitus are advised to stay away."

Coco Feel And Love Shonk
Label:
CONTEXTERRIOR (NETHERLANDS)
Format:

Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
CNTXT 026EP
"Berlin-based Olivier Ducreux releases his first EP for Contexterrior, following his highly regarded material for Freak n'Chic, Crosstown Rebels, Mobilee and Sub Static. Shonky first made a name for himself as a DJ in Paris late last decade, and made his production debut in 2005 for Freak n'Chic, with a slew of acclaimed releases, plus remix requests from the likes of Tiefschwarz and Anja Schneider. Now, following the release of his debut full-length album earlier this year, Shonky joins Contexterrior for three fresh tech-house productions. 'Coco Feel and Love Shonk ' revolves around a naïve organ loop and strict grid-based percussion, while free-spirited sine waves dance and flutter about and gentle female vocals appear. DJs who secretly enjoy 'Missing' by Everything But The Girl might want to check this one out. On the flip, the mechanical 'Donkey Kong' will give you enough energy to climb ladders and brick walls all day long, and the bouncy closing track 'Doctor Slump' will diagnose you with a severe case of dance mania."

Price:

Catalog #:
CNTXT 027EP
"Lump returns with a new EP where his trademark dub sounds begin to flirt with techno and house, leading to a three-way on the dancefloor. London-based Arttu Snellman has been creating refined electronic dub productions since 2002, with a string of 12"s on Sub Static, Süd Electronic and Rrygular, and a full-length for Jay Haze's Future Dub imprint. While that album explored meditative and ambient moods, Lump's new EP for Contexterrior was crafted with the club in mind. Mr. Snellman claims to produce music only when he's in a good mood, and you can certainly hear a sense of optimism behind 'Confusion' as anti-Diva Lerato's filtered vocals swirl around the beat's turbulent bounce. Equally upbeat, but more playful and experimental, is the flip-side 'Music Lover.' Myriad micro-elements flutter throughout, weaving in and out of your consciousness, bound together by the constant syncopated bassline."

CNTXT 028EP
"On her second EP for Contexterrior, Miss Fitz returns with two spaced-out tracks that continue her exploration of natural timbres within the tech-house domain. Since her production debut, Miss Fitz has made quite a name for herself. Especially fruitful for her was 2008, with her Nina Simone-sampling hit 'Drifting On,' a third EP for Raum Musik, and a full-length under her birth name, Maayan Nidam, for the Japan-based Phantom Sound & Vision. She also paired up with Vera to debut the project Mara Trax on Love Letters from Oslo, and worked with Lee Curtiss and Shaun Reeves for their sophomore EP as Uli Künkel. Whew! Now, for her tenth 12" release as Miss Fitz, she continues to weave organic elements into hypnotic soul food for hungry dancers. These two cuts show Nidam's knack for infusing imagination into her work: 'Dementia' features a distorted voice whispering the track's title, backed by a distinctive wind instrument melody, plus lots of primal percussion. It's detached, yet in-yo'-face. On the flip, 'Woods' offers more of a bounce and thump, encouraging the listener to 'work!,' 'jack!' and 'boogie!' -- a jam for roller skating rinks on prehistoric Neptune."

Switzerland's
Quenum
(co-founder of Cadenza and Num) and
Dachshund
join forces once again for a double dose of experimental tech-house. "Agbara" sounds as alien as its title suggests, featuring an undiscovered species of sound that hums, twangs, chirps and zwiffs along a bouncy backing beat. "Ogou" is a swingy, frenetic monster, with echoes of that other Swiss duo,
Yello
, and a subtle, Baltimore-esque breakdown. If you like a little bit of head-scratching with your ass-shaking, pick this one up.

"Berlin's Bloody Mary presents
Black Pearl
, the lead single and title track from her forthcoming debut album, featuring interpretations by Sascha Funke (BPitchControl) and Jay Haze (Contexterrior/TuningSpork). Inspired by Charles Baudelaire's controversial
Les Fleurs Du Mal
(The Flowers of Evil), Bloody Mary headed into the studio with her friend and collaborator Sierra Sam. Her work culminated in a series of productions that reflect the French poet's contrasting dynamics, discovering beauty buried beneath the darkness. Hence the title, 'Black Pearl.' Mary's original album version begins by blending breakbeat and tribal elements, paving the way for the cinematic strings. This track is true to Contexterrior's manifesto of releasing music fit for both the dancefloor and the headphones: Its percussive stomp gets bodies moving, while its sweeping strings provides the soundtrack for daydreams. BPitch mainstay Sascha Funke contributes a remix that begins with hypnotic pings and pulsating sub-bass, but after cleansing the palette with this stark minimalism, we hear refreshing melodic chimes gush forth, overwhelming the taste buds like a shot of mango nectar. Brave and majestic, Sascha's remix is a glowing beacon of optimism for any dark nightclub. Next is label founder Jay Haze's edit, which morphs the melody into a shimmering deep house context. Finally, a second appearance from Sascha with his sparse rework, a beats-only track for the more adventurous DJs who know how to work it."

vocalist and Cadenza producer,

, while "Moetstra Et Errabunda" takes things deeper with a swingy electro-stomp.
Danton Eeprom
adds his sexy, distorted growl to Mary's cavernous beats for "Semper Eadum," one of the album's funkiest tracks. Finally, she pays tribute to Detroit with the smooth and somber "Duellum."

Chocotox
is packed with jacking syncopation and swing. Expect stomping workouts with a plethora of interlocking rhythms, some heavy organ action, and diva vocals that have been subverted into the overall mix rather than used as a focal point. Shonky has clearly done his homework, with respect for the past house originators, while clearly bringing the tradition into the future.

Falko Brocksieper
brings his rich sound to Contexterrior with the
Adobe
EP. On the title track, the stomping beat barges into the room and the stacked chords introduce a sense of mystery. "Adobe" has an impeccable sense of build-up and resolution. "South East" follows a Detroit-ish melodic motif as a pan flute keeps the high ends occupied as the low ends roll into the deep wilderness. Yet another example of Brocksieper's ability to keep the crowd lost in the groove.
