1994 release. "Rhizosphere, originally released in 1976, was Pinhas' first solo album. It consists of four solo pieces for synthesizer, plus an extended fifth synthesizer piece which is a duet with Heldon drummer Francois Auguer. For this CD release, an additional 38' was added of a previously unheard, professionally recorded 1982 concert by the Richard Pinhas Band, a short-lived ensemble who were essentially Heldon II in all but name and who featured a great cast of musicians who had all previously played in Magma: Clement Bailly (drums), Patrick Gauthier (synthesizer) (also of Heldon and Weidorje), Bernard Paganotti (bass) (also of Weidorje) and Richard on electronics, synthesizers and guitar. This title has been unavailable on CD for a number of years and with the huge interest in analog electronics and the early days of synthesis, Richard's career in general and the music of Magma, there is a big market for this music."

Fantastic archival release of this legendary avant-rock group, showing them at their most experimental, tranced-state ever, an organically looped masterpiece of sound construction which will be of interest far beyond the prog section. "Previously unreleased studio recordings recorded in early/mid 1969 by the 'classic' Soft Machine trio line-up of Hugh Hopper (bass), Mike Ratledge (electric piano/organ) and Robert Wyatt (drums). Shortly after recording Volume Two (rightly considered a landmark of British progressive rock), Soft Machine agreed to collaborate with Peter Dockley on Spaced, a multimedia show at the Roundhouse. It was an experimental 'happening' in all its creative splendor, with ballet dancers and ex-army gymnasts choreographed to perform on a geodesic structure made of construction scaffolding. The dancers wore rubber costumes with octopus suckers up and down their legs. After it's week-long performance, Spaced slipped into obscurity. The tapes Soft Machine created for the event were forgotten for over two decades. They feature Soft Machine at their most radical, using sound-manipulated techniques associated with experimental music genres like 'musique concrete'. While they would never again use the studio in such a heavily manipulated fashion, the work influenced later Soft Machine works. It can also be seen as an early blue-print for later radical experimenters like Faust. Hugh Hopper: "They wanted a backing tape of suitably deranged and doomy sounds, so we recorded chunks of music as a trio...My brother came up at the weekend to add some sax blasts here and there, and we then spent a week or more playing around with tape loops and ancient mechanical aids to produce the finished tape. Now of course with a computer you could do the whole thing in an afternoon, but in those analog days it was strictly scissors and tape."

"Matching Mole was the band formed by drummer/vocalist Robert Wyatt after he left Soft Machine in July, 1971. Soft Machine were hugely popular in France, and Robert got the name of his new band as a play on the French translation of Soft Machine: Machine Molle. What eventually became the first Matching Mole album was begun as a solo album. Midway through recording, he was joined by guitarist Phil Miller (Delivery, Hatfield & The North, National Health), organist Dave Sinclair (Caravan, bassist Bill MacCormick (Phil Manzanera's 801) and guest electric pianist Dave MacRae. These recordings became their self titled first album, released in early 1972. Sinclair left soon after and MacRae joined full time. This quartet performed often throughout Europe, and recorded a second album, Little Red Record, which was released in fall,1972. Soon after, Robert decided that he did not want the responsibilities of being a band leader & broke up the band. "South African born and raised pianist/bandleader Chris McGregor formed the racially mixed Blue Notes in the early 1960's, touring and trying to get by in extremely difficult political circumstances as best they could. By 1964, facing continuous government harassment, Chris & the Blue Notes fled their South African homeland, finally settling in London in 1966. They made a huge impact on London's jazz scene and befriended many in London's emerging avant-garde jazz community. By 1969, the Blue Notes had drifted apart. Not too long afterwards, Chris formed The Brotherhood Of Breath, which was essentially the Blue Notes, augmented by a large number of the friends that they had made in the British jazz community. The band toured constantly during their peak years of 1971-74, but they only released 3 albums in their lifetime. Arkham was co-founded by two musicians who subsequently became two of the best-known known names in progressive rock: Jean-Luc Manderlier and Daniel Denis. During its brief yet highly active and visible two years of existence, Arkham played countless live concerts but never released a recording. "One of the most critically acclaimed, far-reaching and influential avant rock bands ever was Soft Machine, named after a novel by William Burroughs. About five years into the band's lifetime, in August 1971, founding member Robert Wyatt left Soft Machine. The band had just released its Fourth album and completed an exhausting period of touring. Wyatt's departure left the band -- then consisting of keyboardist Ratledge, bassist Hugh Hopper and saxophonist Elton Dean -- in disarray. After a few months, Soft Machine recruited rock drummer John Marshall, formerly of the Jack Bruce Band and Nucleus. But the lineup of Hopper, Ratledge, Dean and Marshall would only last a half year. Live in Paris is a rare recording of the quartet of Hopper, Ratledge, Dean and Marshall during that lineup's final days; Dean left Soft Machine later that month. "Soft Machine were one of England's original psychedelic bands, rising out of the same 'UFO CLUB' London scene at the same time as Pink Floyd. Originally founded in Autumn, 1966 as a four piece of Daevid Allen-guitar, Kevin Ayers-bass, vocals, Mike Ratledge- organ and Robert Wyatt- drums, vocals, they became a trio in August, 1967 when Australian Daevid was denied re-entry into the UK after a French tour. The trio continue onward playing many shows and slowly building an audience in 'swinging London' and beyond. The band releases a 45 and link with Jimi Hendrix's management which culminates in the Softs touring the USA with the Jimi Hendrix Experience two different times in 1968, playing over 60 shows as their opening act and recording their first album while in the USA during their tours. This captures the 1967-era Soft Machine (Kevin Ayers, Mike Ratledge, Robert Wyatt) in full concert glory, recorded live in swinging London's legendary Middle Earth club. Lol then joined the band, which soon re-named itself Delivery. A few years later, Lol left Delivery just as they were about to record their debut (and only) album, although he appeared on the album as a guest. He joined Kevin Ayers' Whole World, which included a 15 year-old bassist, the then-unknown Mike Oldfield. After some tours and one album, Lol left Kevin Ayers to concentrate on his solo work just as Delivery was coming to an end and transforming itself into Hatfield and the North. "South African born & raised pianist/bandleader Chris McGregor formed the racially mixed Blue Notes in the early 1960s. By 1964, facing continuous government harassment, Chris & the Blue Notes fled their South African homeland: first to France, then to Switzerland, and finally settling in London in 1966, where they made a huge impression on London's jazz scene. In 1969, Chris formed The Brotherhood Of Breath, which was essentially the Blue Notes augmented by a large number of the brightest names in contemporary British jazz. "Active in music for over 40 years, Lars Hollmer first got together with his friends to play music in late-'60s Sweden. "During their original lifetime, The Microscopic Septet was widely recognized as 'New York's Most Famous Unknown Band.' Originally active from 1980-1992, the group started with a basic reeds-and-rhythm texture that was sonically similar to the sound of the Swing Era, but used influences from the entire continuum of jazz. The result was a brilliant blend of fresh-sounding orchestration, ideas and inspired soloing. "Isotope was formed by British guitarist Gary Boyle in 1972. Having previously played with Dusty Springfield, Julie Driscoll and Brian Auger and the Trinity and Brit-jazz figures like Mike Gibbs, Keith Tippett and Mike Westbrook, Gary decided to form his own ensemble to explore the new worlds of jazz-rock. The band signed with a large UK management company and label and immediately began playing constantly - 4-5 times per week at clubs throughout England and Europe. "Founded in 1980 by Roger Miller and Martin Swope, half of Mission of Burma, Boston's legendary and influential art-punk band, plus two related musicians, Birdsongs coexisted with Burma for several years until Burma broke up in 1983 and Birdsongs became a full-time performing and recording project. Birdsongs, with their unique lineup of three keyboardists (including electronic percussion) and guitar, occupied the musicians full-time until Roger left the band under very friendly terms in 1987 to devote his time to a solo career (and nearly two decades later to eventually resuscitate Mission of Burma). "Beat Circus was formed in Boston in 2002. The band is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist / singer-songwriter Brian Carpenter, who has been its only constant member since its inception. "Radio Massacre International is a British trio of Steve Dinsdale (electronics, percussion) Duncan Goddard (electronics, bass) and Gary Houghton (guitar, electronics). These three musicians formed R.M.I. in 1993. They have released a huge number of CDs, all on tiny UK labels, as well as two previous, highly acclaimed albums for Cuneiform, which are their only 'general available' works. They take their musical cues from the classic 1970s 'Berlin electronic sound', a sound that based on the early exploration of electronics in rock music and a sound that has great resonance to listeners today as well. "Formed in the summer of 1964, although the New York Art Quartet existed for barely a year and a half, great interest remains in their work. They consisted of co-leaders John Tchicai (alto sax), who participated in John Coltrane's ground-breaking Ascension album and Roswell Rudd (trombone), considered to be the first free-jazz trombonist, along with bassist Don Moore and drummer Milford Graves. The band participated in the legendary 'October Revolution in Jazz', which journalist Bill Shoemaker called, 'Arguably the most seminal jazz concert series ever held...it was a comprehensive four-day survey of jazz's cutting edge.... It marked the beginning of the Golden Era of do-it-yourself jazz culture in the U.S.' They recorded their self-titled first album for ESPand Tchicai went back to his homeland of Denmark to scout out work for the group. Only Rudd was able to join him, so the pair enlisted Copenhagen bassist Finn von Eyben and South African drummer Louis Moholo (of the Blue Notes and Brotherhood of Breath) for a pair of concerts in October, 1965, which are released here. This release features all previously unheard recordings from 1965 with very high-quality sonics. In the 8 page booklet are never-before seen photos and a short, informative essay by writer Jason Weiss, who produced this album. Released on the 45th anniversary of the 'October Revolution in Jazz' and of these recordings, there will be major coverage of this CD in the jazz world. There has never been more interest in historic free-jazz than now and Rudd, Tchicai and Moholo are all leading figures in the music."

Nice reissue of an always tough to find privately pressed album from 1977. "Recorded at home just using multiple guitars, synth & tape/effects/processing, this achieves an unholy blend of finger-style guitar Americana with the psychedelic spirit & effects of Jimi Hendrix. Carefully mastered from the original master tape, Steve says that the sound is better than he even hoped was possible." For many who are prone to wariness with anything ECM-relatable (the label Tibbetts has always been associated with since this debut), this is quite a stroke.

"Composed & performed in late 1974, Death's Crown was written as a collaborative work with dancers, actors, lighting & coordinated slide shows -- a multi-media event staged at a local dinner theatre in their hometown. The piece was performed several times, but was not a regular part of their repertoire, although parts of the work were regularly performed by the band in concert. Rehearsal tapes of the band performing Death's Crown were recently found & this marks the first time that this material has ever been heard."
