"Great compilation with 16 tracks culled from eight different original soundtracks from the past. Track listing and liner notes by Alan Bishop of the Sun City Girls." "This collection is a view from the top of the food chain; 16 boxcars of luminosity from an archival train that could span this earth. Culled from 8 original soundtracks in the Beat Records catalog, some of these cuts are impossible to describe. What kind of music is 'Una Corsa Disperata'...high drama orchestral psychedelia? How about 'Veni Sancte Spiritus'...an acid rock opera in Vatican City? And how could the sweet-syrup majesty of the theme to 'Il Grande Silenzio' possibly accompany a murderous Klaus Kinski on the screen during Sergio Corbucci's epic spaghetti western, the only one filmed in three feet of snow?" -- Alan Bishop.

RED 117LP
"The original soundtrack recording for this 1979 US cult movie by horror director George A. Romero (the epic sequel to his legendary
Night Of The Living Dead
). Terrific music score by Goblin and Dario Argento (yes, the Italian director). Liner notes by Roberto Zamori. Free poster included. 180 gram vinyl in gatefold sleeve." "In contrast to Argento's own fretful tempos, Goblin create a plodding, lumbering main theme which fits the slow movement of massed zombies. Fat drums, chunky bass, tubular bells, spaced-out synth chords -- the arrangement is a mutation of Black Sabbath's first LP and Morricone's early Spaghetti Western scores. Inappropriately overstated? Maybe. Luridly stylish? Definitely." -- Philip Brophy/

Suspiria
Label:
DAGORED (ITALY)
Format:
LP
Price:
$20.00
Catalog #:
RED 127LP
"
Suspiria
(1976) recapitulates the formulaic accoutrements of symphonic rock (compound time signatures, ornate instrumentation, vainglorious tone, melodramatic structure, self-aggrandising solos, etc) yet in its feverish simulation of the vocabulary, it somehow transcends the dated conventions of the form. More than
Deep Red
(which occasionally affects jazz fusion styling),
Suspiria
salaciously degenerates into atonal freeform passages which evoke a pap paganism to create some chilling moments of terror. Argento's murderous gaze and psychosexual camera work is matched by the hedonistic fever with which Goblin rake over the cliches of symphonic rock, stoking them into an overblown spectacle of operatic effect. While conservative critics bemoan both the excessiveness of Italian exploitation cinema and the numbing bombast of rock scores, Argento and Goblin collaborate to create a potent and toxic fusion of the two, blending their co-existing strains of perversity." -- Philip Brophy,

"The original soundtrack recording for this 1972 Italian/French spy thriller directed by Henri Verneuil. The movie (known in the US as
Night Flight From Moscow
and starring Yul Brynner, Henry Fonda, Dirk Bogarde and Philippe Noiret) has one of Morricone's best scores. If you are familiar with his
Una Lucertola Con La Pelle Di Donna
soundtrack, you are getting an even better idea 'cause this is very much like that one. Along with the best known track 'Tema Per Una Donna Sola' (a very nice romantic theme), 'Nadine' (a brilliant pop instrumental), and 'Canzone Lontana' (featuring Edda Dell'Orso) the score contains lots of weird and scary instrumental sounds for a dark and noisy, totally atonal Morricone's masterpiece. Contains 16 previously unreleased tracks. New artwork."

OST Che C'Entriamo Noi Con La Rivoluzione?
Label:
DAGORED (ITALY)
Format:
CD
Price:
$16.50
Catalog #:
RED 145CD
"Original Morricone soundtrack for this classic 1972 Italian 'tortilla-western' directed by spaghetti western king, Sergio Corbucci (perhaps best known for his classic
Django
[1966] and
Navajo Joe
, [1967], starring Burt Reynolds. Although the spaghetti western genre was invented by men like Corbucci and Sergio Leone, it was Ennio Morricone who gave the genre its distinctive flavor. Unlike many spaghetti westerns,
Che C'entriamo Noi Con La Rivoluzione?
was intended as a comedy, evident by the presence of two of Italy's most famous comic actors: Vittorio Gassman and Paolo Villaggio. The light-hearted subject matter gave Morricone the opportunity to explore less familiar terrain -- the result being a surprisingly experimental blend that makes the soundtrack an essential Morricone recording. Only 3 of the 17 tracks have ever been previously released."

"Morricone's original soundtrack for the 1972 Italian drama by Nino Zanchin and starring Umberto Orsini, Susanna Melandri and Rosemarie Dexter. Ethereal vocals by the legendary Edda Dell'orso. Includes 7 bonus tracks."

RED 147CD
"1958's
South Seas Adventure
was the fifth and last in a series of full-length documentaries designed especially for the 3-camera/3-projector Cinerama technology. The Cinerama Adventure was a new type of film that traded in big-name stars and plot in an attempt to give the audience a virtual reality-type experience, in this case, a trip in the South Seas. Although the Cinerama films have since become cult classics, the original soundtrack for the film was just one item in composer Alex North's hefty repertoire, which included the soundtracks to such classic films as
Spartacus
(1960),
Cleopatra
(1963),
A Streetcar Named Desire
(1951),
The Bad Seed
(1956), and
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

"Here's the soundtrack from the 1968 Italian film known in the U.S. as

Title:
Calypso
Label:
DAGORED (ITALY)
Format:
LP
Price:
$20.00
Catalog #:
RED 154LP
"Musically active since 1937, Trinidadian Rupert Grant aka Lord Invader obtained his nom-de-calypso from his tailor who had predicted his success saying
'when you go up to the city you be invading the capital'
. Sent to New York in 1941 by his label to promote
Calypso
, his main song 'Rum and Coca-Cola', featured here, was stolen from him and soon became a huge hit for the Andrews Sisters. He eventually won a lawsuit against producer Morey Amsterdam but by the time he saw the money he already had flown to Great Britain (1945) where other calypsonians like Lord Kitchener had found success. This record, originally issued in 1956 on Audio Fidelity, witnesses the importance of the calypso tradition not only as a form of entertainment but also -- and often mainly -- as a form of political criticism towards the wartime presence of US soldiers ('Yankees') in Trinidad."

Music of El Topo
Label:
DAGORED (ITALY)
Format:
LP
Price:
$20.00
Catalog #:
RED 155LP
"Recorded in San Francisco in 1970 and originally released on the Douglas label, obscure Shades of Joy's
Music Of El Topo
is commonly associated with the visionary western-on-acid epic film
El Topo
by Chilean born Ukrainian Jewish multi-medial artist Alejandro Jodorowsky as its soundtrack, despite another unrelated album on the Apple label being credited as the true soundtrack to the flick. Nevertheless, this intriguing piece of urban jazz funk fusion delivers seven instrumental mantras whose core is neatly amalgamated by the fine art of a great ensemble, here together only for this seemingly extemporized job. The idea of 'soundtrack' is here superbly interpreted and leaves the listener puzzled about the short life of this incredible gathering of exceptional musicians." Gatefold sleeve.

Trinidad Steel Band

LP
Price:
$20.00
Catalog #:
RED 157LP
Subtitled: 'A Study in High Fidelity Sound'. "Originally released on Audio Fidelity in 1956, this 12 track album outlines an interesting phenomenon which developed in Trinidad during the last years of British colonization. Prevented from using skin drums -- banned by the British in an attempt to suppress African tribal customs -- Trinidadians began using steel tubes and sticks to create a new form of urban sound which, like the musical expression of many other long colonized countries, brought together protest and entertainment. Many of the tunes reinterpreted here are of African and Spanish heritage, although French Creole and Indian influences -- East Indians relocated here by the shortage of slaves after the 1833 abolition -- are also present, giving the listener the chance to enjoy an entirely unique piece of street art and history."

RED 172CD
"1977 movie directed by Pasquale Squitieri and set in Corleone, Sicily during the 1950s, two childhood friends, Michele Labruzzo and Vito Gargano, have chosen opposite roads in life. Michele is now a leader of the farmers' movement and its quest to free the land from the iron fist of the nobility and the mafia (represented by Baron Miceli and local mafia boss Don Giusto Provenzano), while Vito is the trusted 'yes-man' of Don Provenzano, and eventually vows to kill Michele in exchange for control over the Baron's lands. While this may not be one of Morricone's better-known soundtracks, it is nonetheless top-drawer Morricone who does not waste a note in turning this film into an epic tale of good vs. evil. By now already more than a decade into his career, the Maestro had already written dozens of soundtracks and established himself as one of the best-known and most talented film composers in the world, a title he maintains to this day."

"Morricone works his magic again in this 1969 Italian production directed by Luciano Lucignani, Vittorio Gassman, and Adolfo Celi. Vittorio, Adolfo and Luciano (this film is based loosely on the lives of the directors of the film) were great friends during their days at the Academy for Dramatic Arts, which they attended in the years just after the Second World War, but they lose touch soon after. Adolfo goes to Brazil where he becomes a very successful actor; Vittorio remains in Italy and he also becomes a stage and movie star; and Luciano becomes a director, playwright, film critic, scholar and ardent Communist. Adolfo, after many years away, begins to miss home and sends a telegram to Vittorio and Luciano to inform them of his return to Italy. During the trip, Adolfo thinks fondly of his school days and dreams of a happy reunion with his friends, but both Vittorio and Luciano have changed."

L'Eneide OST
Label:
DAGORED (ITALY)
Format:
CD
Price:
$16.50
Catalog #:
RED 179CD
"Mario Nascimbene's music for the 1971 hit TV series of Virgil's immortal epic, the
Aeneid
, is not so much a comment on the scenic action, as a study of sounds and themes used to emphasize the psychological nature of the various characters. Amidst instrumental and vocal sounds (including the splendid voice of Olga Karlatos) an extremely new and intriguing concept in film music of the '60s/'70s is born. The viola of Dino Asciolla -- warm and vibrating -- manages to transport the listener into an ocean of sound of rare intensity. The splendid and sensible conducting skills of Maestro Carlo Savina add (especially in the five voice canon, a reinterpretation of antique and archaic melodies) a certain expressive luster that makes Mario Nascimbene's new sounds a confirmation of his great artistic genius."

She was the first foreign language star to gain such widespread popularity abroad and she opened the door for others to follow in her footsteps. Bardot was a bombshell in any language... and you certainly didn't need to read the subtitles to see that! The tag line to the movie was 'And God Created Woman... but the devil created Brigitte Bardot!' An erotic drama (the scene with Bardot dancing barefoot on a table is still hot enough to melt any acetate it's printed on) co-starring Jean-Louis Trintignant (who Bardot allegedly had an affair with) that tells the tale of 'life and love' on the Riviera. It made St. Tropez the popular resort for the rich and famous that it soon was to become. French director Roger Vadim (known for his affairs with beautiful women) was Brigitte's husband at the time and he wrote this film specifically for her, in hopes of adding more depth to Bardot's on-screen characters. While Bardot was received well in Hollywood, she was still considered too risqué to be offered any kind of contract in the USA. Ironic considering she is now a supporter of the extreme right-wing in France, but it was 1956 and the bikini was still considered a scandalous piece of clothing in the USA. The sexual content also created a huge uproar and was boycotted by the Catholic Church's Legion of Decency. Brigitte (only 23 years old) can be heard for the first time on record, doing some spoken French narration as intros and outros to the soundtrack, a jazz-fused 1950s orchestra and mambo-influenced piece (all the rave at the time)."

"In the extraordinary music that Piccioni composed for Bolognini's masterpiece,
Antonio
, the tormented protagonist of the story, and his intimate burning drama are accompanied by the splendid soundtrack in a union that is highly evocative, coloring the splendid black and white in perfect 1960s style. Piccioni's music cuts to the heart of Sicilian life of the post-war period, conveying the mood of its very distinctive customs, and the angst and desperation of the characters in the story, touched by such intimate tragedies. There is no folk music in this soundtrack; just Piccioni's extraordinary, original score, which adheres so incredibly to the various scenes, situations, moods and emotions, that by listening to the music, you almost feel as if you are flipping through the pages of the book that the screenplay was based on."

"Franco Tamponi's splendid soundtrack to Mino Loy's (aka Donan J. Lee) 1962 original 'shock-u-mentary'
Mondo Sexy di Notte
(aka 'Mondo Sexuality'), which portrayed cabaret shows from all over the world (although many of the locations are thought to have been reconstructed in the studio), presenting an exotic sensuality that once upon a time represented a form of transgression in the film world, reserved for an adult audience only. Also, for the younger listeners, perhaps it will be surprising not to hear the sound of any electronic instrument here... but this was the era when the orchestra reigned supreme. Lovingly restored from the original session tapes recorded in studios in Rome and Milan, where music written by the legends of the Italian film industry became the soundtracks to the great Italian films of the day."

"Dagored is proud to bring you maestro Ennio Morricone's soundtrack to the 1982 controversial cult thriller
Butterfly
, based on a novel by James M. Cain (
The Postman Always Rings Twice
,
Double Indemnity
). The film is a sordid tale of father-daughter incest and murder involving Stacy Keach and renowned Hollywood sexpot Pia Zadora, as the temptress daughter, Kady. The film also represents the last screen performance of Orson Welles, who plays a judge attempting to convict Keach's character for incest. Welles was nominated for 'Best Supporting Actor' for his role here. Despite much criticism of the film itself and Zadora's relentless publicity campaign prior to the film's release, Zadora ultimately won a Golden Globe as 'Best New Actress' for her performance (and to commemorate this, she unbelievably went on to name one of her children 'Kady' after the character she played here!). The Morricone score itself is relatively quiet, compared to some of his more nail-biting works, but as always, Morricone is a master of transforming the psychology of the film's characters into music, which he does here with a subtle art that has made him THE undisputed maestro of film scores. The quality of his work was also recognized with the track 'It's Wrong For Me To Love You,' featuring vocals by Zadora, which were nominated for 'Best Original Song.' Thanks in no small part to Pia Zadora's steamy performance here, both the film and soundtrack have become cult classics, with fans all over the world clamouring for its re-release on DVD."
