"This, the only credited soundtrack appearance of Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, makes you wish Morricone had used his free improv unit for that purpose more often. Gli Occhi Fredda Della Paura, or Cold Eyes of Fear, is an Italian slasher (giallo) from 1971. The score has Il Gruppo augmented by a rhythm section and a fuzz-wah guitarist (most likely Alessandro Alessandroni). The results sound like a creepy take on 70s Miles Davis, with driving jazz beats and psychedelic guitar jabs filtering in and out of the suspenseful textural mayhem provided by Il Gruppo: ashtrays in pianos, bowed cymbals, scraping metal, jittery horns, string drones, etc. Besides an odd one in the Morricone canon, Gli Occhi is also an unusual endeavor for Il Gruppo. The ensemble set out to avoid all musical conventions: '...no sounds bound to the tonal system, no rhythmic periodicity, no motives, and no repetition allowed...,' yet here they break Franco Evangelisti's rules and find themselves locked in some serious grooves. "Musically active since 1937, Trinidadian Rupert Grant aka Lord Invader obtained his nom-de-calypso from his tailor who had predicted his success saying 'when you go up to the city you be invading the capital'. Sent to New York in 1941 by his label to promote Calypso, his main song 'Rum and Coca-Cola', featured here, was stolen from him and soon became a huge hit for the Andrews Sisters. He eventually won a lawsuit against producer Morey Amsterdam but by the time he saw the money he already had flown to Great Britain (1945) where other calypsonians like Lord Kitchener had found success. This record, originally issued in 1956 on Audio Fidelity, witnesses the importance of the calypso tradition not only as a form of entertainment but also -- and often mainly -- as a form of political criticism towards the wartime presence of US soldiers ('Yankees') in Trinidad."

Adolfo, after many years away, begins to miss home and sends a telegram to Vittorio and Luciano to inform them of his return to Italy. During the trip, Adolfo thinks fondly of his school days and dreams of a happy reunion with his friends, but both Vittorio and Luciano have changed."

"Although Brigitte Bardot was already famous in France, this is the movie that made Bardot an international star. She was the first foreign language star to gain such widespread popularity abroad and she opened the door for others to follow in her footsteps. Bardot was a bombshell in any language... and you certainly didn't need to read the subtitles to see that! The tag line to the movie was 'And God Created Woman... but the devil created Brigitte Bardot!' An erotic drama (the scene with Bardot dancing barefoot on a table is still hot enough to melt any acetate it's printed on) co-starring Jean-Louis Trintignant (who Bardot allegedly had an affair with) that tells the tale of 'life and love' on the Riviera. It made St. Tropez the popular resort for the rich and famous that it soon was to become. French director Roger Vadim (known for his affairs with beautiful women) was Brigitte's husband at the time and he wrote this film specifically for her, in hopes of adding more depth to Bardot's on-screen characters. While Bardot was received well in Hollywood, she was still considered too risqu� to be offered any kind of contract in the USA. Ironic considering she is now a supporter of the extreme right-wing in France, but it was 1956 and the bikini was still considered a scandalous piece of clothing in the USA. The sexual content also created a huge uproar and was boycotted by the Catholic Church's Legion of Decency. Brigitte (only 23 years old) can be heard for the first time on record, doing some spoken French narration as intros and outros to the soundtrack, a jazz-fused 1950s orchestra and mambo-influenced piece (all the rave at the time)."

"Dagored is proud to bring you maestro Ennio Morricone's soundtrack to the 1982 controversial cult thriller Butterfly, based on a novel by James M. Cain (The Postman Always Rings Twice, Double Indemnity). The film is a sordid tale of father-daughter incest and murder involving Stacy Keach and renowned Hollywood sexpot Pia Zadora, as the temptress daughter, Kady. The film also represents the last screen performance of Orson Welles, who plays a judge attempting to convict Keach's character for incest. Welles was nominated for 'Best Supporting Actor' for his role here. Despite much criticism of the film itself and Zadora's relentless publicity campaign prior to the film's release, Zadora ultimately won a Golden Globe as 'Best New Actress' for her performance (and to commemorate this, she unbelievably went on to name one of her children 'Kady' after the character she played here!). The Morricone score itself is relatively quiet, compared to some of his more nail-biting works, but as always, Morricone is a master of transforming the psychology of the film's characters into music, which he does here with a subtle art that has made him THE undisputed maestro of film scores. The quality of his work was also recognized with the track 'It's Wrong For Me To Love You,' featuring vocals by Zadora, which were nominated for 'Best Original Song.' Thanks in no small part to Pia Zadora's steamy performance here, both the film and soundtrack have become cult classics, with fans all over the world clamouring for its re-release on DVD."
