ASTRAL SOCIAL CLUB
Title:
Plug Music Ramoon

DANCING WAYANG (UK)

LP
Price:
$23.00

DWR 003LP
"Dancing Wayang Records are proud to present the new studio-recorded, full-length album by Neil Campbell's Astral Social Club. Featuring two tracks of fearless sonic bliss and two long journeys to a state of sustained ecstasy
Plug Music Ramoon
was recorded in one day on analogue 2" tape. This limited edition LP comes housed in a gorgeous hand-printed silkscreen sleeve, with insert. Sequenced in chronological order on the LP as the tracks were recorded in the studio, the opener 'Flamingo Moon' takes off into outer space. It's a gentle start to the impending Astral chaos as the rambunctious 'Punk Rocker / Mug Cracker' noisily propels itself and its passengers forwards. This 14-minute showdown is divided into two parts with the loose, drum-led 'Punk Rocker' submerging into the swooping sonics of the 'Mug Cracker.' Side 2 introduces a playful element into the spiral density with percussive sticks and bells providing a tribal backdrop for resonant electronics, keyboard odysseys and some experimental vocal work from helmsman Neil Campbell. After a wild solar adventure, the album culminates in 'Ramoon Ramoon,' a considered and tight improvisation that steers the Club homeward. Whilst Club member John Clyde-Evans's laptop contributions provide much of the backbone groove of the album, Stewart Keith adds light and shade on a variety of keyboards and toys. But it's Campbell's dense guitars that thicken the very stem of these four tracks and leads his Astral Social Club to conjure up his dreams and visions. Neil Campbell is a stalwart of the UK experimental music scene who began making music in the early 1980s. Originally a member of loose improvisational collective A-Band, he established himself more firmly in the 90s as a founding member of Vibracathedral Orchestra. Campbell utilizes guitars, electronics, vocals and laptop generated and manipulated sounds in his freeform improvisations. In 2005, he embarked on his solo project Astral Social Club often drawing on the talents of kindred spirits. Stewart Keith is a long-time friend and collaborator of Neil Campbell and one of the main members of Nottingham's the A-Band playing free drone and high-energy rock music and championing an un-tutored, elemental and almost primitive approach to music making. John Clyde-Evans, aka Tirath Singh Nirmala, has played with artists such as Richard Youngs and Vibracathedral Orchestra contributing computer generated sounds, electronics and violin." Limited 500 copies, numbered.
Artist:
EDWARDS & CHRIS CORSANO, JOHN
Title:
Tsktsking
Label:
DANCING WAYANG (UK)
Format:
LP
Price:
$24.00
Catalog #:
DWR 004LP
"Dancing Wayang Records are excited to release the first duo album by London-based double bassist John Edwards and US drummer extraordinaire Chris Corsano called
Tsktsking
. The album was recorded at Eastcote Studios, London in December 2008. Limited to 500 copies it comes housed in hand screenprinted wrap-around sleeves. The accompanying insert features exclusive and very funny liner notes written by UK sax pioneer Evan Parker. Defying the drum and bass's classic roles as rhythm instruments, Edwards and Corsano's
Tsktsking
is a beautifully melodic album. At times Corsano's drumset sounds like it's got strings whilst Edwards's double bass takes its fair share of scrapes and slaps. Extended passages explore the most subtle and some unexpected sounds that can be summoned from metal and timber. Equally, possessed progressions and untamed eruptions of energy and power are conjured up. These two musicians prey and pounce on their instruments like it's their last chance before a long drought."

GUSTAFSSON, MATS

"
Needs!
is the brand new heavyweight album from heavyweight saxman Mast Gustafsson. The studio album comes housed in the customary Dancing Wayang hand silk screened sleeve, this time featuring artwork by Austrian artist Mathias Poschl and with liner notes by Jim O'Rourke. On
Needs!
Gustafsson uses the studio setting to produce unexpected and surprising results, pushing his playing into unchartered territories. The LP features Mats' baritone, but also the slide saxophone (a rare antique instrument) as well as a small selection of live power electronics. He combines the acoustic sounds of his saxophones with these amplified sounds, mixing them as overdubs as well as live improvisations. The raw and muscular approach to blowing that has made Gustaffson the unbound force he has become can be experienced in its naked and most vital form on this LP. From gasping to rasping to tongue slapping, nothing smoothes over the up-close physicality of conjuring sounds from his saxophones. The brass resonates as Gustafsson's lungs whistle with tension and release. While his acoustic playing is rich in dynamics with a sense of punctuation and spaces, some of his electronic concoctions are thick slices of condensed compressed mass. 'Sources of Such' manufactures a dense, immovable wall of electronic sound broken only by a deep, gutteral warble of the baritone's lowest registers. On both the opening and closing tracks, Gustafsson uses the electronic devices to follow and echo his acoustic playing with organically playful results that merge and blur the lines between the acoustic and the electric sound sources. This is a record of substance and space shifting in an array of unexpected layers of noises, which interlock and split apart in equal measures." Hand-numbered edition of 500 copies.

MINTON & OKKYUNG LEE, PHIL
Title:
Anicca
Label:
DANCING WAYANG (UK)
Format:
LP
Price:
$26.00
Catalog #:
DWR 006LP
"The result of a first time meeting between boundary pushing cellist Okkyung Lee and legendary vocalist Phil Minton,
ANICCA
presents a set of four explorations of timbre and of minds. Recorded in studio in London and presented in hand screenprinted sleeves designed by Okkyung especially for this release,
ANICCA
is a very limited, heavyweight pressing. Liner notes have been provided courtesy of artist Christian Marclay, a frequent collaborator of both Okkyung and Phil, who rightly declares:
'Beware, this is scary stuff!'
Recorded acoustically and with the aim to capturing the rawest, smallest, biggest and most beautiful sounds of their respective instruments, Okkyung's cello and Phil's voice sound nothing like they should. At their most powerful the resonance of both strings and vocal cords trade places, merge and tangle to create a storm, a wave and a crackling fire. But each gust of the wind is preceded and followed by the hush tones of two strangers meeting for the first time. The Korean track titles allude to a stillness encountered in such a meeting, a void ready to be filled with willing stabs at forming friendship. Soon this nothingness is filled with 'chanting and banging, hooting and hacking'. Numbers are exchanged and songs are sung together in exuberance and quiet beauty. The track 'Mu-Byun' ends on such a delicate note, a moment of mutual understanding. But true to the album title
ANICCA
's true meaning of 'impermanence', this fleeting moment is torn apart by the following 'Mu-Jin' which begins with a guttural growl by one instrument only, the voice. Following
ANICCA
is witnessing a constant state of flux. Just as the strings meet in celebration, turmoil pulls them apart and therein lies the thrill of this music." Hand-numbered, limited edition of 350.
Artist:
EVANS, PETER
Title:
Beyond Civilized And Primitive
Label:
DANCING WAYANG (UK)
Format:
LP
Price:
$26.00
Catalog #:
DWR 007LP
"The new solo album by American maverick trumpeter Peter Evans, titled
Beyond Civilized and Primitive
after a thought provoking essay by philosopher Ran Prieur, is a heavyweight pressing and comes housed in hand-screenprinted wrap-around sleeves featuring the forceful brushwork of 15-year-old artist Owen Gould. Recorded during two sessions at Eastcote Studios, London, this album sees Evans push into uncharted territory by utilizing the recording facilities as compositional tools. Overdubbing and looping are the two significant techniques employed here to expand on Evans' already boundary-pushing musical exploits. The opening track, entitled 'complexity, change, invention, stability, giving, freedom, and both the past and the future' starts the album off in a quiet and concentrated, even demanding way exploring space and minute sounds. 'History is Broken,' a 12 minute circular breathing piece performed at breakneck speed, picks up the tempo and puts both Evans' and the listener's stamina to the test. In these first two tracks alone, Evans pushes his instrument and his lungs to its opposite extremes." Hand-numbered limited edition of 500 copies with insert.
