LOCO DICE

7 Dunham Place
Label:
DESOLAT (GERMANY)
Format:
CD
Price:

Catalog #:
DESOLAT 001CD
Originally released in 2008, this is the debut full-length release by renowned Düsseldorf minimal DJ, producer and Desolat label-head,
Loco Dice
.
7 Dunham Place
has been created to take the listener on a journey: an album to be treasured as a fine-textured catalog of the senses. Loco Dice, who spends much of his time shuttling between the world's main electronic music ports as an in-demand DJ, packed up his studio and relocated to New York City. There, he fomented a raw and simmering soundtrack: a nuance-packed collection of sonic interpretations of scenes, characters and moods from the most diverse and mythologized city in the world. The album specifically pays homage to their adopted home base, Brooklyn, while sketching the trajectory of a musical life uprooted and transplanted, where dream-like feelings of isolation and melancholy transmute into a sense of place and kinship. Loco Dice began a fruitful studio partnership with
Martin Buttrich
in 2002 leading to tracks like "Phat Dope Shit," "Menina Brasiliera," and "Seeing Through Shadows," and these productions are meticulously planned by Dice. It's a directorial, cinematic outlook, which permeates Dice's everyday life: fed by his experiences living in extreme environments like Ibiza and New York, as well as drawing on elaborate film scripts imagined as a young Loco Dice on the streets of Flingern in Düsseldorf and the Kerkennah Islands in Tunisia. It's an album that re-imagines the soul of a city, built from careful observations of urban tribes that crisscross and sometimes clash, of minute details and sensory impressions. From the two guys at the local deli who're always on the verge of fighting over football results or presidential candidates, to the tattooed lady couple who sell the morning soul food, all find their way into this cohesive collection of tracks which breathe deeply, and as they exhale, tell a story. "M Train To Brooklyn" includes the sounds of a subway train on the tracks, with a low-slung, incredibly relaxed vibe, "Esquina" is a Latin-themed piano-led track with bouncy beats, and "Tight Laces" uses sampled female voices, shakers, and analog squiggles that make the track sound absolutely propulsive, like everyday life.
7 Dunham Place
is your city-commute headphones soundtrack with reduced grooves, kept infinitely personal.

BUTTRICH, MARTIN
Title:
Crash Test
Label:
DESOLAT (GERMANY)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
DESOLAT 002CD
This is the first full-length album on Desolat by renowned German composer and producer
Martin Buttrich
. Whether listened to while driving on the highway or on a massive speaker stack at next summer's festivals, one thing is for sure:
Crash Test
will splinter preconceptions. The album is a compilation of tracks, picked from among many works the artist has created over the last 15 months at his Hannover studio and various spaces and places worldwide. Each song pays testament to this Grammy-nominated artist's fluid approach to music composition -- an ability to converse with machines, and dive deep into the circuitry of a song. Buttrich has spent recent years developing a sound that appeals to both sides of the brain: having dropped records on labels such as Planet E, Four:Twenty, Cocoon, Poker Flat and Desolat that encompass the entire spectrum between dreaminess, intuition, warmth, melancholy, and highly-calibrated dancefloor precision. Meanwhile, his catalog stretches round some of the most influential dance tracks heard around the globe since 1992.
Crash Test
is a long-player, a four-to-the-floor album that can be listened to from start to finish; an organic sequence of shifting moods to sublimate existing minimal house or techno paradigms. The album is shaded with bass weight: a reflective, meandering interpretation of the grooves that have always inspired Buttrich: echoes of hip-hop, jazz, reggae and soul. Emotive tangents hover, punctuated with found sounds and textures recorded in public spaces. This album is intended as an expression of a certain time and space: a collection of tracks that could only have been woven together at this turbulent point in history. The album contains more acoustic and analog instruments than Martin Buttrich usually uses, and attempts to bridge a gap between imagined and audible worlds. A bridge from the cozy confines of a studio to the outer spaces, in which each tune is re-contextualized.

Label:
DESOLAT (GERMANY)
Format:

Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
DESOLAT 002EP
Originally released in 2007. Born in Sicily, now Romania's best-loved DJ,
Nea Marin
(
Rhadoo
) presents Desolat's second release -- a remix of
Internullo
's "Sentimente." Finely-drawn sentiments and metallic hats quietly chip away on top of a rising tide of reverberating pads, engulfing you in an emotion you hardly knew you felt. The original track reflects the ominous fragmentation of our modern times, but Marin's version evokes the memories that might swell up from between those sparse beats.

LIVIO & ROBY PRESENTS PREMIESKU
Title:
Mistique
Label:
DESOLAT (GERMANY)
Format:
12"
Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
DESOLAT 002X-EP
Desolat's X series continues with
Livio & Roby Presents Premiesku
, a project from Romanian duo Livio & Roby, in collaboration with
George G. Solid
. These swinging, four-to-the-floor patterns take inspiration from classic deep house, Detroit techno and tech house. You'll hear snippets of a surreal and breathy flute over a thudding kick and a bumping bass-line, and fleeting samples of reed pipe, vocals, ragtime piano and brass dancing on top of technotic, simmering loops. A truly hypnotic brew. On red-colored transparent vinyl.
Artist:
PULSHAR
Title:
Inside
Label:
DESOLAT (GERMANY)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
DESOLAT 003CD
This the first release on Desolat for Spain's
Pulshar
, who are emerging as true musical heavyweights, with compositions that traverse the borderlands between spacious song-craft and the futuristic outer-reaches of the dub-techno universe. After receiving widespread critical acclaim for his various solo projects and remixes in 2009,
Inside
sees
Pablo Bolivar
reunited with the tender tenor tones of
Aphro Sainz
. On tracks like "Da Creator" and "Montparnasse 2am," an easy house groove takes its time rolling out languidly, while mild melancholia, sample stabs and outer-space delays hark back to the heyday of On-U: a synthetic interpretation of
King Tubby
's legacy that would sparkle in the early hours at a tech-house beach party. "Montparnasse 2am" incorporates eerie soundtrack fragments that explicate the duo's love of classic cinema, and the penultimate track, "Above The Wall" provides another filmic fragment: with surf guitar twangs atop a blissful doo-wop haze. A little magic goes a long way, and the light shines bright on some of the more pop-filtered tunes, such as the whistling nuance of "United States Of Pulshar." With its plaintive, optimistic melody repeated like a hip-hop sample and burbling synth touches, it could stand as a manifesto for the project. "California State Of Mind" lassoes elements of today's West Coast beats scene and the synth-funk that preceded it, adding a tuneful dubby touch and letting everything melt together, while "S.T.A.R.S". and "Distant Fire" incorporate post-garage patterns and weighty bass, showing the full arc of dub's development. The two pay respect to their dub forefathers in a more literal manner on cleanly-polished gems like "Empty Suitcase" and "Stepping Stones," a collaboration between Pulshar and
Roberto Sanchez
, who is a leading figure in the European roots reggae scene. Pulshar encompass the world of reggae influences and incorporate everything in their own distinctive, forward-looking style.

YAYA

Label:

Format:

Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
DESOLAT 003X-EP
This release from
Yassin Legali
aka
Yaya
takes a unique, upbeat approach to 4/4 beats: combining Benin influences -- samples from dialogue and traditional ballads -- with Balearic and tech house, plus the occasional Commodore 64 high-score melody. Influenced by the rhythm and structure of his musical heritage (Yaya's father was a lead vocalist/percussionist for
M'Bamina
, a band of musicians from Benin, Zaire, Italy and Cameroon), Yaya grew up as a percussionist, eventually DJing funk, soul, Afrobeat, house and garage. On purple-colored vinyl.

GUTI
Title:
Patio De Juegos
Label:
DESOLAT (GERMANY)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
DESOLAT 004CD
Argentina-born
Guti
releases his inaugural album on the label that has given his echoingly hypnotic jazz-infused house music a stable platform. The live performer effortlessly presents a collection of beautifully-constructed productions that demonstrate the convergence and symbiotic nature of his musical past and present. Classically-trained jazz virtuoso and national rock 'n' roll hero in his native Argentina, Guti is no stranger to music. A musical education that takes in Argentinean folk, blues, rock and jazz, Guti is currently enjoying a new chapter in his musical adventure within electronica. With his productions now being a regular feature in the record bags of DJs as diverse as
Seth Troxler
,
Marco Carola
, and
Carl Cox
, it is apparent Guti is enjoying a watershed moment in his long adventure.
Patio De Juegos
, which translates as "Playground," is a wonderful multi-genre journey through the mind of an artist who is both on top of his game and on the rise towards the stars. Lashings of his ever-present South American heritage fuse with incredibly intricate and perfectly simple house structures that give the whole album its almost "child at play" ethos that is rarely found in electronic music. Future club hits such as "Wanna Be," with its nod to the historical upbeat lineage of house music, and "All The Girls," with its chugging rhythm, trickling piano loops and erotic vocals sit effortlessly alongside more experimental and jazz-inspired tracks such as the explorative "Still Here." Another fine example is "Sun," with its deep bass line punctuated with the sun-soaked synths and summer hi-hats that export listeners away to a warm utopia. Guti produces a number of tracks with high profile artists from both within and outside the DJ fraternity:
Guy Gerber
features on "We Shall Overcome," with its rising synths complemented by a chunky beat.
Ryan Crosson
lends a hand on "No Promises" which has resulted in a truly driving dancefloor groove. And "My Whole Thing" features
Anthea Marie Nzekwu
whose uplifting vocals accompany a dreamy, chilled-out beat.
Grünbox
features on "Miraloo" -- an example of Guti's ability to collaborate with the world's musical elite. Notably, and perhaps the biggest coup, is that of
Daniel Melingo
who features on "Lucio El Anarquista." The Grammy-nominated tango singer and world-renowned musician is well known for his composition work on
Pedro Almodóvar
's films, and he brings a rich musical education to a truly sublime track. Overall, Guti gives up a beautiful mixture of tracks that bridge the space between the club and the living room with consummate ease.

Originally released in 2008. "Lights In My Dark World" is awash in the kind of fluttering, hissing sea-foam grooves that you have come to expect from Desolat; as well the underhanded drama and subtle retro flourishes befitting the eponymous
Frank Sinatra
character.
Danny Ocean
is from Barcelona, with eclectic influences that include the morbid strains of Brazilian thrash metal, the earliest little fluffy clouds of British electronica, as well as the polished bass lines and classic soul of

Title:
Tessa
Label:
DESOLAT (GERMANY)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
DESOLAT 005CD
This is the debut full-length album from
tINI
, an integral member of the Desolat family since 2009. Her album is named
Tessa
, after a music-loving friend who supported her transformation as a producer and DJ. It's not only islands that need to be travelled to: developing a sound is a true journey, and one's changing environments naturally play a role in that evolution. tINI, formerly of Munich, now resides in Berlin. Her version of house music is still representative of her electrifying, wired-up DJ sets, but there's a new spaciousness and urban gleam to these moods, filtered through the more laid-back, surreal atmospheres of the island of Ibiza, where the majority of the album was produced.
Tessa
kicks off with "Divided" as a statement of intent: this is no formulaic house music, but rather something personal and idiosyncratic. A contemplative mood sets the scene for gentle, off-kilter palpitations. "Blonde Galipette" settles into the groove, with plenty of delay on rhythmic elements as a robotic interpretation of lonely shipyard sounds, and a growing tide of bass. "Mine Has A Shower" is a wink to the adopted spaces and unlikely comrades of an island dedicated to music; while "All The Good Stuff" is a tongue-in-cheek salute, referencing the tales told to new friends in the deepest hours of the morning. Tracks such as "My Shine," "Canta La Testoasa" and "Maria, Louise And Bert" bolster the album with relaxed dancefloor vibes, while "Triptease" veers slightly closer to a boompty house pattern. "tINI Meets Jack - Medusa" brings an uplifting snap, "Monkey's Cave" simmers and "Fail Better" unspools some compelling minimal house vibes. Lastly, on "Someone Loves You," tINI's debut Ibiza season wraps to a close in a contemplative mood.

is a raw, rhythmic piece with quirky vocal samples. On "Hang Over," Basti Grub moves further on a search for the beauty between rhythm patterns and delivers one captivating, fragile, 11-minute long epic -- dance music for those special moments. On red vinyl.

DESOLAT 016EP
With the toughness of Detroit house and the weirdness of Chicago acid, "Scotch Your Mind" will absolutely destroy all dancefloors.
Allì Borèm
jumps headfirst into digital-age hedonism with these two reduced, swinging cuts that have all the abandon and humor of a late night lock-in. This gentleman hails from Rome and as a DJ he has been responsible for plenty of discoteca mischief. Expect these two playful, bleepy, bouncing tracks to give you much joy on the dancefloor.

Javier Viudez
and
Rainer Serrat
team up for 4 tracks -- tales of lost memories and other-worldiness of early morning hours that were some of the best-kept secrets of
Loco Dice
's sets this summer. Take "Scusas," with its hypnotic, scale-wandering staccato bassline, or "Rainer Nostalgia," with its uplifting vocal shouts, or the
Timberlake
-infected, driving "Nuevo Cedar" or any other piece in this collection, and it's clear these boys seem to have the golden touch for stripped-down grooves.

DESOLAT 019EP
This is
Pirupa
's hard-rocking debut on Desolat. His "Party Non Stop" is not only a trip down memory lane, crossing the paths of hip-house in a vocal version and early rave-ish bleep sounds in an instrumental version -- it's first and foremost the house sound of now, with attitude.
DJ QU
, the man behind Strength Music, rounds out the EP with a healthy dose of drama with his epic, raw remix.

returns to Desolat with two smashing tracks accompanied by

The release is completed with a remix by DJ Rafik, the DJ who won DMC World Championship six times, and brings forth an eclectic mix of electronic music, breakbeat, hip-hop and rock. With his impressive skills on the MPC, Rafik turns "ONce" into a serious electro-funk floor-shaker.
