"First time on CD for this extremely rare Rex label psychedelic classic (1971) from Mexico; terrific West Coast style psych, with melodic vocals and blasts of incredible fuzz guitar that seem to come out of nowhere; excellent album, whose current price for an original copy is around $1,000, if you can find a copy."

"First reissue of this dreamy psychedelic rarity from 1972, said to be made by Spanish and Chilean musicians in the USA; don't know about that, but it was issued in the USA on Caytronics, and has been much sought after since then (see the
Collector's Dreams
books); some great beat ballads combined with trippy melodic psychedelic reveries; a band that was rightly named 'the Dreamers'."

PAULO BAGUNÇA E A TROPA MALDITA

MCDS 0403
"In 1974 the Continental label released a rare album, with the name of the band very big over the cover -- Paulo Bagunça e a Tropa Maldita -- that left a strong impression on a small underground portion of Brasilian youth. The band name was deliberately provoking: 'Bagunça' means mess or confusion (big scandal), while 'tropa maldita' means damned, or wicked soldiers. The media at the time were not creative -- they called this sort of music 'electric pop,' an uninspired tag for an inspired album. The record contains different styles of songs, some with a special conception like 'Grinfa Louca' with its hallucination-inducing afro beat. The record was futuristic for the era, mixing different influences, ranging from Jorge Ben to Traffic (if they had afro percussion!), with jazz touches and elements of the funky sounds of the era. In a 1972 interview with
Rolling Stone
magazine, Bagunça said he considered his music '
something that comes from deep inside, from the heart, from my caverns, dreams and nightmares
'."

"Super underground Brasilian group formed by Mauro Assumpção (voice), Rubinho (violão and keyboards), and friends in Rio De Janeiro in the early 1970's. Their lone album has long had a reputation for its West Coast psychedelic elements (the dreamy introspection of the opening track, for example), although we've also seen it described as soul/funk... a description supported by the funky second track, the bossa/groove of the third track, 'Os olhos', the lilting samba psychedelia of 'Tá tudo aí', as well as a few others on this disc. The end result is compelling, with early Chico Buarque and maybe Black Merda as strange but plausible reference points. One track from the record appears on the
Love, Peace & Poetry: Brazil
collection."

VALENÇA & GERALDO AZEVEDO, ALCEU
Title:
Alceu Valença & Geraldo Azevedo
Label:
DISCOS MARIPOSA (WORLD'S LEADING TERRORIST STATE)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
MCDS 0405
"The first LP for both famed musicians,
Alceu Valença & Geraldo Azevedo
(1972), has wild, dissonant arrangements by legendary composer and arranger Rogerio Duprat, who had also worked with Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes and other of Brasil's futuristic artists. Both Valença and Azevedo are Brasilian composers who created a distinctive style that mixes native northeastern rhythms, such as frevo, baião, maracatu, coco, xaxado, embolada, toada and xote, with elements of rock and psychedelia. The poetic beauty and the hypnotic rhythms in their songs have made both composers legendary in their native land. With a similar cast of musicians to the Flaviola and the Flock of the Sun album (as well as a similar vibe), this certainly qualifies as more truly great psychedelic folk music from the Pernambuco region of Brasil."

O Mistério dos Quintais

Price:

Catalog #:
MCDS 0406
"Psychedelic folk duo, formed by brothers Dimitri and Negendre Arbo. They were part of a set of folk groups comprised of 'gaúchos' (native country people) that appeared in the 1970's, with groups like Almôndegas (minced meat balls), Utopia and Grupo Terra Viva (Alive Earth Band), and continued to exist in the 1980's with groups like Tambo do Bando, Couro, Cordas & Cantos (Leather, Strings & Songs) and Quintal de Clorofila (Garden of Chlorophyll). Most of these bands did not make records. Quintal de Clorofila is one of the few who got to make a record, which was released by the independent label Bobby Som in 1983. For this LP, titled
O Mistério dos Quintais
, Quintal de Clorofila recorded their own compositions, with lyrics by their brother, the poet Antônio Carlos Arbo. According to Dimitri Arbo, the band mixed jazz, rock, medieval music, Afro, oriental and Latin rhythms; they named their kind of music 'Viking Rock'. It's a complex sound to be sure, with tremendous depth and abundant inspiration evident throughout all of the album's atmospheric songs. An album much beloved by Hans Pokora -- and now by us. Two alternate versions of songs from the album are included as bonus tracks."

Price:
$17.00

MCDS 0407
"Brazilian TV hunk Ronnie Von released, it is of the prevailing opinion, far too many albums between 1966 and 1972. But he hit the target with three of them, a trilogy on par with the very well-known Mutantes first three LPs. Here on the self-titled 1968 album, we have psychedelia with some pop hints, amazing songwriting, sharp and heavy fuzz guitars combined with groovy organs, piano and tasty horns, along with fantastic vocals by Ronnie. Six bonus tracks from 1967 include several of Von's first hits, all of which are delightful to hear. Limited edition reissue has remastered sound, original artwork, and a hefty booklet with biography, photos, and lyrics."
Artist:
ANGELO/JOYCE, NELSON
Title:
Nelson Angelo e Joyce
Label:
DISCOS MARIPOSA (WORLD'S LEADING TERRORIST STATE)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
MCDS 0408
"Special collaboration from 1972 between Brazilian composer Angelo, one of the founding members of Milton Nascimento's Clube da Esquina, that seminal Brazilian musical community comparable to those of Tropicalia and bossa nova in its importance, and his then-wife, the legendary Joyce. Joyce needs no introduction to those who are hip to Brazilian music: suffice to say she is one of that nation's greatest musicians, a statement that has been borne out throughout her more than thirty years making music. The result of the couple's great talent and mutual affection is a spacy, psychedelic-tinged acoustic album that beautifully combines the talents of these two guitarists, who were very much in love at the time they recorded the songs contained therein. The music is very similar in tone to Nascimento and Lô Borges'
Clube da Esquina
LP from the same year -- no surprise once you know that Angelo was playing on that amazing album, too!"

O TERÇO
Title:
O Terço
Label:
DISCOS MARIPOSA (WORLD'S LEADING TERRORIST STATE)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
MCDS 0409
"Their second album (1972), a landmark of Brazilian progressive/psychedelic rock, in no small part thanks to Luiz Pablo Simas (ex-member of Módulo 1000), who brought his talent and his mini-Moog to the band. O Terço had been working on a new sound for some time, taking part in the 'Aberto para Obras' spectacle in 1970 at the Teatro de Arena do Largo da Cariocafor, the main arena for bullfighting. People wending their way through barbed-wire had to choose between looking at a lower stage, upon which Modulo 1000 was playing, or at an upper stage, where O Terço was playing. Below, a woman prepared popcorn in a stove, and further on, seated in a urinal, the brother of O Terço band-member Jorge Amiden played static on his guitar for three hours, then smashed his instrument to pieces! Participation in this sort of anarchy makes it no surprise that their album kicks off with a hard rock guitar riff, perhaps influenced by King Crimson, Led Zeppelin or even Black Sabbath; even so, other tracks present a blend of symphonic and psychedelic sounds, with beautiful pastoral passages that demonstrate the influence of Os Mutantes, the Moody Blues, and early Pink Floyd. The final track, 'Amanhecer Total' ('Complete Dawn'), is amazing -- a nineteen minute collage with a pastoral introduction (and lovely female vocals), vocals, synth lines, acoustic guitars and percussion effects that provide a fine, easy atmosphere; then a psychedelic section, with strange keyboard effects merged with fading voices -- dreamy, and ambient; heavy guitar riffs, low-profile keyboards, and aggressive vocals revisit the album's first track; then the finale, with soft piano (revisiting the bucolic origins of the suite) and synthesizer coloring the mantra-like chorus. A grand finale for a great album. Two bonus tracks are from an EP released between the first album and this one: 'Tributo ao Sorriso' and 'Adormeceu,' which are both quite pretty, and pretty famous, in Brazil."

O BANDO
Title:
O Bando
Label:
DISCOS MARIPOSA (WORLD'S LEADING TERRORIST STATE)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
MCDS 0410
"Reissue of the sole album (1969) from this Brazilian rock super-group formed in São Paulo in the end of the 1960s. O Bando's music blended MPB, regional music and tropicalistic 'psicodelia' -- this engaging combination no doubt thanks to Rogério Duprat, who provides arrangements (along with Damiano Cozzela and Júlio Medaglia). It's a bizarre record, which starts off with a blast of rampaging brass before searing fuzz guitar and disturbing astral keyboard sound effects kick in; the end result sounds like an insane hellfire version of soundtrack/library music of the period. The rest of the album is quirky in the best of all possible ways: some definitive tropicalia moments, including a cover version of Toquinho e Jorge Ben's 'Que Maravilha,' funky break intros to many of the songs, and nice harmonies too, when required. Although they used single names in O Bando, the singer Marisa was Marisa Fossa (she later recorded more material with Rogerio Duprat), Paulino was Paul de Castro who also played in Os Mutantes and other Brazilian rock legends, and Dudu was famous Brazilian drummer Dudu Portes, who has backed Elis Regina, Milton Nascimento, and Gal Costa, among others. Booklet includes a nice essay on (and discography for) Rogério Duprat."

O Império de Nuncamais
. "Second part of the amazing psychedelic trilogy by Brazilian star Ronnie Von, recorded between 1969-1970. There's little doubt that the three albums which comprise Von's brief psychedelic legacy are not only a memorable break from his multitude of pop outings, but more importantly, stand as three of the more compelling psychedelic recordings to emerge from any single artist of the era. This record is a collection of 12 psychedelic pop songs, with unique arrangements, featuring violins, reverse guitars, brass, piano and various psychedelic effects. Even more innovative than the previous album (already reissued by Discos Mariposa) and nothing like what you might have expected from someone who is more pop star and psychedelic guru. Some songs are entrancing epics, some Tropicalia, and others just pop/psych masterpieces. Includes the entire album, plus 4 bonus tracks. A fulsome 24-page booklet includes a history of Von's career, as well as lyrics for all the songs."

A Máquina Voadora
Label:
DISCOS MARIPOSA (WORLD'S LEADING TERRORIST STATE)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
MCDS 0412
"The last and probably best album from Von's incredible psychedelic trilogy from the years 1969-1970. We said some time ago that of the three key albums from this long-time Brazilian pop-star, that the first was the best, but hearing this again suggests that it's time to revise that opinion. It's true that all three albums make it clear that the psychedelic effects of Tropicalia were not confined to Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and Gal Costa. Yes, Von often takes a poppier angle in getting to a similar fuzz-guitar driven musical landscape, but not only does he get there all the same, on this album the pop is minimal, and the fuzz supreme. It's difficult to describe how balanced this album is, as it features truly one-of-a-kind songs, which include any number of effects and treatments of Ronnie's enchanting voice, all of which matches perfectly with the mysterious and melancholic songs on the album. Listen to it and let yourself fly into the far reaches of Ronnie Von's dreamy, twisted mind. Comes with a fulsome 20-page booklet that includes a history of Von's career (sort of), as well as lyrics."
