Artist: GILBERTO, JOAO
Title: O Amor, O Sirriso E A Flor
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 201LP
"Once upon a time João Gilberto was just a reclusive and eccentric bohemian with a guitar, then came 'Chega De Saudade,' the song that launched both bossa nova and João's career. Over the next three years (with the help of song writing masterminds Tom Jobim and Vicinius De Moraes), João revolutionized Brazilian music with the three seminal albums that have become the bibles of bossa nova: Chega De Saudade (1959), O Amor, o Sorriso e a Flor (1960) and João Gilberto (1961)."

Artist: SIMONE, NINA
Title: Nina At Newport
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 202LP
"When this album was recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1960, Nina Simone had just had her first Top 20 hit with 'I Loves You, Porgy,' but the 'Porgy' found here (written by Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields, most famous for 'I Can't Give You Anything But Love') is actually a continuation of Gershwin's original version of the story. Other highlights include 'Flo Me La,' an African work chant, and 'Little Liza Jane,' an African-American folk song."

Artist: SIMONE, NINA
Title: The Legendary First Recordings in New York City, 1957
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 203LP
"Nina Simone's first album is quite simply one of the finest debuts in the history of recorded music. Backed here only by Jimmy Bond on bass and Albert Heath on drums, this stripped down trio format brings Nina's considerable talents (as a classically trained pianist) to the fore. Her soulful versions of songs like 'Mood Indigo,' 'My Baby Just Cares For Me' and 'I Loves You, Porgy' have all become standards in their own right and Nina the declared idol of many." Housed in a gatefold sleeve.

Artist: GAINSBOURG, SERGE
Title: 1 2 3
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP+CD
Price: $37.00
Catalog #: DOK 204LP
"A collection of Serge Gainsbourg's legendary first three albums, originally released in 1958 (Du Chant a la une!), 1959 (N° 2), and 1961 (L'Etonnant Serge Gainsbourg), and all hailing from a time when Gainsbourg was still just another struggling chansonnier. In fact, success initially eluded the young Gainsbourg, but early classics like 'Le Poinconneur des Lilas,' and 'La Chanson de Prevert,' give listeners a taste of the immense talent that was still lurking in the shadows of a smoky cabaret. Bonus CD of the albums in a special gatefold jacket."

Artist: GILBERTO, JOAO
Title: Chega de Saudade
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 205LP
"Originally released in 1959, Chega de Saudade is kind of like the book of Genesis of bossa nova. It influenced so many musicians both at home (Caetano Veloso, Jorge Ben) and abroad (Stan Getz, Herbie Mann, Charlie Byrd) that almost every song on this album (from 'Desafinado' to 'Bim Bom') is now a standard. Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, who display their song writing talents here, would soon go on win a Grammy for 'The Girl From Ipanema.' Now with bonus CD of the album!" On 180 gram vinyl.

Artist: GILBERTO, JOAO
Title: Bossa Nova!
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 206LP
"Originally released in 1961 as Joao Gilberto, this historic album is one of the great cornerstones of bossa nova. Accompanied by Tom Jobim (who wrote such standards as 'Garota de Ipanema' and 'Desafinado') and organist Walter Wanderley (best known for his smooth Hammond playing and the 1966 hit 'Summer Samba'), Gilberto plays songs like 'Samba da minha terra' and 'O amor em paz,' both of which (along with most of the songs on this album) would soon become standards of the genre." On 180 gram vinyl with a CD of the entire album.

Artist: BEN WEBSTER QUINTET, THE
Title: Soulville
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 207LP
"One of the great tenors of the swing era, Ben Webster (1909-1973), known as 'The Brute' for his big vibrant sound, was also uniquely warm and melodic, making him a superior interpreter of ballads. Recorded in studio with the Oscar Peterson trio in 1957, this album is one in a string of classic albums recorded by Webster for the Verve label during the '50s. After two bluesy self-penned tracks, Webster tackles five skilfully rendered ballads, including an exquisite 'Where Are You.'" On 180 gram vinyl with a CD of the entire album.

Artist: MINGUS, CHARLES
Title: The Alternate Moods Of Tijuana
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 208LP
"Considered to be among Mingus' best albums, Tijuana Moods was recorded in NYC in the summer of 1957. Inspired by a trip to that well-known city of perdition, songs like 'Ysabel's Table Dance' and 'Los Mariachis' were meant to evoke the moods of many a man's tequila-fuelled misadventures there. The Alternate Moods of Tijuana is an album of alternative takes from that celebrated session, including an early version of the 'A Colloquial Dream' spoken-word piece with Lonnie Elder." On 180 gram vinyl with a CD of the entire album.

Artist: COLTRANE, JOHN
Title: Coltrane Plays The Blues
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 209LP
"Recorded on 24 October 1960 in NYC, Coltrane Plays The Blues is perhaps a misleading title for this album as Coltrane is not so much playing the blues as bringing the feeling of blues into the idiom of jazz. This memorable album, featuring McCoy Tyner on piano, Elvin Jones on drums and Steve Davis on bass, hails from Coltrane's first period as leader of his own quartet, and finds Coltrane playing then highly unusual soprano sax on two numbers -- 'Blues To Bechet', a pianoless tribute to the great Sydney Bechet, and 'Mr. Syms', where McCoy Tyner is given the opportunity to really show his stuff, which he does masterfully. Includes 'Exotica' (also recorded during this session) as a bonus track + 4 more bonus alternate tracks on the CD." 180 gram vinyl.

Artist: COLTRANE QUARTET, JOHN
Title: Africa/Brass
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 210LP
"Coltrane's 1961 album for the fledgling Impulse! label explores African rhythms along with some of the most unusual instrumentation in jazz (his classic quartet is backed here by a 15-piece brass band)! This expanded reissue also features Cal Massey's 'The Damned Don't Cry' and 'Song of the Underground Railroad', both recorded during the original sessions but not included on the album. Bonus CD features an alternate version of 'Africa' as well as Coltrane's own, far superior, arrangement for 'Greensleeves'. Hearing is believing!" On 180 gram vinyl.

Artist: COLTRANE, JOHN
Title: My Favorite Things
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 211LP
"Anyone looking for proof that John Coltrane's exalted status is so deserved need only to glance at the amount of time this album took to record. In just three days (Oct 24 - 26, 1960), Coltrane managed to almost effortlessly produce this milestone of modern jazz, and the impeccable Jones/Tyner/Davis line up that supports Coltrane solos ('But Not For Me') give the entire session the feeling that we are experiencing pure genius." On 180 gram vinyl.

Artist: SIMONE, NINA
Title: Forbidden Fruit
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 212LP
"When Nina Simone signed to Colpix in 1959 she was granted complete creative control over her music. This new freedom gave her the ability to explore new subject areas, particularly themes dealing with Civil Rights. Songs like 'Work Song' on 1961's Forbidden Fruit gave an inkling of the maelstrom that was to come, when she would become a veritable force to be reckoned with, making white audiences squirm in their seats with her harsh condemnation of American apartheid." On 180 gram vinyl with a CD version of the entire album.

Artist: LITTLE RICHARD
Title: Here's Little Richard
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 301LP
"Although 'epic' is a term much bandied about by music journalists, there are few moments in rock & roll history that truly deserve that label. That said this LP, Little Richard's debut, is one of them. While it's true that in many ways Little Richard was continuing in the style of predecessors like Fats Domino, it can also be said that 'the Georgia Peach' was the original punk rocker of R&B. He cranked up the volume, caked on the eyeliner, upped the tempo, and pounded the ivories while wailing, 'tutti frutti, loose booty!' (although it had to be changed to 'aw rooty' for the official recording)." On 180 gram vinyl with a CD of the entire album.

Artist: BERRY, CHUCK
Title: After School Session
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 302LP
"The name Chuck Berry and rock & roll are synonyms. Without Chuck Berry, there would be no rock & roll. So to call Chuck Berry's debut LP 'seminal' is a bit of an understatement. This album, originally released on the fledgling Chess Records in 1957, was Chuck Berry's first long playing album (after a slew of hit singles), and only the second ever for the label. Chuck Berry got Chess to sign him by playing a demo of, none other than 'Maybellene,' and the book of Genesis in the Bible of rock & roll was written." 180 gram vinyl with a CD version of the album.

Artist: HOLLY, BUDDY
Title: Buddy
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 303LP
"Double feature album collecting two great pieces of rock history: Side A is the 1958 album originally released as Buddy Holly, just a few months after his 1957 debut, The Chirping Crickets. It was also tragically the last album ever to be released during his lifetime (he died in 1959). It featured his hit 'Peggy Sue,' plus many of the songs he is best remembered for like, 'I'm Gonna Love You Too', 'Everyday' and 'Rave On.' Side B was actually recorded in 1956 in Nashville, just before Holly became a superstar. Although these sessions were not even recorded a year prior to his debut album, the sound here is very different. It is slower and much more country oriented, showing a Buddy Holly who was still looking for his trademark sound. He hasn't quite cracked the code, but fans will be interested in hearing what went into the making of a rock & roll legend. Especially interesting are a countrified version of his hit 'That'll Be The Day' and a long lost rock & roll classic, 'Rock Around With Ollie Vee.'" On 180 gram vinyl with a CD of the entire album.

Artist: BROWN AND HIS FAMOUS FLAMES, JAMES
Title: Please, Please, Please
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 304LP
"Originally released in 1959 on King Records, Please, Please, Please is the debut studio album of James Brown and his backing vocal group, the Famous Flames. After a flurry of non-charting singles, many of them found here, Brown's career was finally on the upswing as 'Try Me' hit number 1 on the R&B chart. Here Brown, who was still in search of his signature sound, tries his hand at everything from rockers like 'Chonnie-On-Chon' to novelty tracks like 'That Dood It.'" On 180 gram vinyl.

Artist: BROWN AND HIS FAMOUS FLAMES, JAMES
Title: Try Me!
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 305LP
"After the Famous Flames' initial success with their 'Please, Please, Please' single, they spent the next few years floundering and even risked being dropped from their label. That all changed in 1959 when Try Me shot to the number 1 slot on the R&B charts, becoming the top-selling R&B single of the year! This was the beginning of James Brown's uncontested reign as the Godfather of Soul!" 180 gram vinyl with a CD version of the entire album.

Artist: CASH, JOHNNY
Title: With His Hot And Blue Guitar!
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 306LP
"When Johnny Cash's With His Hot And Blue Guitar was originally released in 1957, Cash became the first Sun artist to release a long playing album. A mix of classic tunes (like Leadbelly's 'Rock Island Line', Hank Williams' '[I Heard That] Lonesome Whistle', and Jimmie Skinner's 'Doin' My Time') and a handful of Cash's own soon-to-be classics (like 'Country Boy'), this album put the 23-year-old Cash fast on the fast track to superstardom. All songs taken from 1957 Sun studio sessions." On 180 gram vinyl.

Artist: CASH, JOHNNY
Title: Now Here's Johnny Cash
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 307LP
"By the time this album was released in 1961, Johnny Cash had long-since left Sun Records for greener pastures. The album is therefore, a compilation of songs Cash recorded while still under contract with Sun-from his earliest recordings in December 1954 to his final session in July 1958. This is a classic collection from one of the most imposing and influential figures in country music. His deep, resonant baritone and spare, percussive guitar style will never be duplicated." On 180 gram vinyl.

Artist: CASH, JOHNNY
Title: Sings Hank Williams
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 308LP
"This tribute album to Hank Williams was originally released in 1960, just seven years after Hank's tragically premature death (the 29-year-old country legend died at the peak of his stardom in the back of his own Cadillac). Includes seven of Hank's best loved songs: 'I Can't Help It', 'You Win Again', 'Hey Good Lookin', and 'I Could Never Be Ashamed Of You', along with some of the Man in Black's own hits, like 'Folsom Prison Blues' and 'I Walk the Line'." On 180 gram vinyl.

Artist: CASH, JOHNNY
Title: Now, There Was A Song!
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 309LP
"Originally released in 1960 on Columbia, Now, There Was A Song! gave Johnny Cash a chance to pay tribute to his own musical influences and the songs that made country music great. Songs like Hank Williams' 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry' (1947), Ernest Tubb's 'I Will Miss You When You Go' (1952), and 'Hank Thompson's 'Honky Tonk Girl' (1954), greatly influenced the young Cash in his own development as an artist and performer." On 180 gram vinyl.

Artist: CASH, JOHNNY
Title: Ride This Train
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 310LP
"Originally released in 1960, Ride This Train is not, as one might think, a collection of songs about trains, but Johnny Cash's first true concept album. Here, Cash presents himself as a kind of modern troubadour, travelling by train across America and telling a story about the people who live at each place the train stops. 'Loading Coal,' for example, is the story of a Kentucky miner, while 'Slow Rider' tells of a murderous outlaw and saddle tramp." On 180 gram vinyl.

Artist: CASH, JOHNNY
Title: The Lure Of The Grand Canyon
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 311LP
"Originally released on Columbia Records, Johnny Cash's eleventh album, The Lure of the Grand Canyon, was unlike anything he had ever done before. Most significantly, it was not even an album of Cash's music, rather a concept album consisting primarily of American composer Ferde Grofe's Grand Canyon Suite. Cash gives his tribute to Grofe in the conclusive track, an eleven-minute spoken word piece about a day at the Canyon." On 180 gram vinyl.

Artist: MINGUS, CHARLES
Title: The Jazz Experiments Of Charlie Mingus
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 801LP
"Originally released as two 10" records called Jazzical Moods, this is one of Mingus' best records from the 1950s. These 1954 sessions include the work of John LaPorta, Teo Macero, Thad Jones, Jackson Wiley and Clem De Rosa, creating a cool jazz sound that soars over 6 tracks, including a great rendition of 'Stormy Weather.'"

Artist: MINGUS, CHARLES
Title: East Coasting
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 802LP
"Originally released in 1957 on Bethlehem, this is one of Mingus' best works of the period. 6 tracks of hard bop and modernist playing with the help of some top notch players: Jimmy Knepper (trombone), Shafi Hadi (sax), Clarence Shaw (trumpet), Dannie Richmond (drums) and Bill Evans (piano)."

Artist: DAVIS, MILES
Title: Miles Davis Quartet
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 803LP
"This album is composed of three different sessions. The first session (Side A) was recorded at WOR Studios in NYC in May of 1953 and features Miles Davis on trumpet, John Lewis on piano, Charlie Mingus on bass and piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Max Roach on drums, while the second session (all of side B, except for 'I'll Remember April') was recorded at NYC's Beltone studios in March 1954 and features Miles Davis on trumpet, Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Art Blakey on drums. 'I'll Remember April' was recorded on a third session the following month at Rudy Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, NJ, and features Miles Davis on trumpet, Dave Schildkraut on alto saxophone, Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. All three sessions hail from Davis' 'Prestige period' which stretched from 1951-1955 and during which time Davis had developed an addiction to heroin. However, according to some sources it was precisely between the recording of the first two sessions that appear here that Davis went back home to St. Louis to get clean. He was largely successful, and so this album marks a major turning point in Davis' career."

Artist: DAVIS, MILES
Title: Diggin' With The Miles Davis Sextet
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: DOX 804LP
"Originally released as the Prestige 10" Dig, it was later reissued as a 12" with additional tracks. The Diggin' title comes from a later reissue, which was supposed to fall in with the 'Cookin',' 'Steamin',' 'Workin',' etc. series. This album actually has nothing to do with that later period, but it is a still a very good representation of an early Miles at his best, forging ahead with his own cool bop style. This sextet features Davis on trumpet, a young Jackie McLean on alto sax (his debut recording), Sonny Rollins on tenor sax, Walter Bishop Jr. on piano, Tommy Potter or Charles Mingus on bass and Art Blakey on drums."

Artist: COLTRANE, JOHN
Title: Art Blakey's Big Band And Quintet
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 805LP
"Recorded in NYC in 1957 and originally released on the small Bethlehem Records, this LP contains 2 amazing sessions: Session B (tracks A1, A2, B1, B2, B3, B4 and B5, 'Oasis,' previously unreleased on LP) features a 15-piece big band led by Art Blakey who was in transition with his Jazz Messengers at the time. The band he has put together for this session explores some wilder numbers, like Melba Liston's 'Late Date,' which would not have been out of place with the Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra (the horn players are all Gillespie graduates), along with some more conservative material, such as Jerry Valentine's 'Midriff' (which is a nod to Count Basie's post-war orchestra), giving us an interesting look at how Coltrane handles himself playing in this unusual environment. Session C (A3, A4) is also a rare glimpse at a young John Coltrane, this time playing his own music in a quintet format (led by Art Blakey and also featuring Donald Byrd, Walter Bishop, Jr., and Wendell Marshall). Coltrane's highly-praised 'Pristine' would not have been out of place on his landmark Blue Train album."

Artist: MONK, THELONIOUS
Title: Genius Of Modern Music: The Complete Two Record Set
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $32.00
Catalog #: DOX 806LP
"Volumes 1 and 2 of Genius of Modern Music are finally available for the first time as one deluxe double LP set, featuring the original track listings from the first 12" versions, originally released on Blue Note in 1956. Sides A & B, originally released as Genius Of Modern Music, Vol. 1 (BLP-1510), feature Monk's recordings as a bandleader in 1947 and Sides C & D, originally released as Genius Of Modern Music, Vol. 2 (BLP-1511), feature his recordings as a bandleader for Blue Note in 1951-1952. The 1947 recordings, recorded when Monk was 30 years old, are Monk's first as a bandleader and just a glance at the track listing makes one understand why Blue Note felt it appropriate to use that title for these albums. This was Monk's first major recording, and many of the tracks here have become jazz standards."

Artist: EVANS, BILL
Title: New Jazz Conceptions
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: DOX 807LP
"1956 debut album by piano genius Bill Evans. His label, Riverside Records, agreed to record him after a friend played Evans' demo tape over the telephone for one of the producers! Two years later the young Evans would already be playing in the legendary Miles Davis sextet!"

Artist: MODERN JAZZ QUARTET, THE
Title: The Modern Jazz Quartet
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: DOX 808LP
"Although Milt Jackson, John Lewis and Kenny Clarke had been playing together since the mid-forties as the rhythm section for the legendary Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra, it was not until 1951, with the addition of Percy Heath, that they became the Modern Jazz Quartet. Although they were very popular, experimenting with many styles, including bebop and cool jazz, they became perhaps best known for their formal presentation (in tuxedo) and choice of venues (concert halls), in a self-professed attempt to make jazz 'serious', like classical music. This stylistic choice starkly contrasted with many of their contemporaries and often the group was criticized for trying to appeal to a white audience. However, one may argue that it was everyone else who was too afraid to break from the 'beatnik' mold. Although their debut LP - released in 1952 as a 10" -- is now a classic in jazz, the music still feels very immediate, and features the earliest versions of their best known compositions. This version features extra tracks from the period 1952-1954."

Artist: VA
Title: Pal Joey Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: DOX 809LP
"Pal Joey was a Rodgers and Hart musical debuting on Broadway in 1941 and featuring Gene Kelly as Lounge Lizard Joey Evans. For the 1957 film adaptation Sinatra, of course, plays the male lead and Rita Hayworth and Kim Novak play his love interests. The soundtrack features Sinatra singing many of his best Rodgers and Hart material like, 'The Lady Is A Tramp,' 'There's A Small Hotel,' and 'I Didn't Know What Time It Was,' however, the female voices heard on several of the tracks are not the voices of Rita Hayworth or Kim Novak. Rita Hayworth almost never did her own singing in her films, and the voice on this soundtrack is actually the voice of Jo Ann Greer, while the voice of Kim Novak is actually the voice of Trudy Erwin (both professional singers used often by Hollywood to dub singing). Sinatra, of course, does his own singing, and in 1957 his singing and performing was at its peak, and this film and its soundtrack (the best Sinatra ever did) is a crystal clear snapshot of that."

Artist: MINGUS, CHARLES
Title: A Modern Jazz Symposium Of Music And Poetry
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: DOX 810LP
"Originally released in 1957 on the Bethlehem label, this obscure album shows Mingus exploring new territory with his sextet while incorporating vocals into his work, On the opening track, 'Scenes In The City,' Mel Stewart (who played Henry Jefferson in the American TV series All In the Family), performs a spoken word piece written by actor and playwright Lonne Elder III and the legendary Langston Hughes. The track is a snapshot of Harlem and NYC in the 1950s, and for that alone this album stands out in the Mingus repertoire. Although the rest of the album features no spoken word or poetry, the playing is top notch and sidemen -- Jimmy Knepper on Trombone, Shafi Hadi on sax, Clarence Shaw and Bill Hardman on trumpet, and Horace Parlan and Bob Hammer on piano -- can all evidently run with the big dogs. Digitally remastered."

Artist: TRISTANO, LENNIE
Title: New York Improvisations
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: DOX 811LP
"One of jazz music's best kept secrets, Chicago born pianist Lennie Tristano was a major innovator in his field and is considered one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time. The blind pianist of Italian descent was also the first jazz musician to perform and record in the free jazz style. In 1949 (several years before Ornette Coleman), his quintet recorded what is widely considered the very first free jazz album. However, Tristano was suspicious of record labels and recorded very rarely, preferring to concentrate his efforts on teaching, opening one of the first jazz schools in NYC in 1951 (students included Charles Mingus, Lee Konitz, Wayne Marsh, among others), making the few records he did record all the more significant. This album, originally released on his own Jazz Records label (he was also one of the first jazz musicians to start his own record label) was recorded in 1955-56 in Tristano's Manhattan studio and features Peter Ind on bass and Tom Weyburn on drums."

Artist: TRISTANO & BUDDY DEFRANCO, LENNIE
Title: Crosscurrents
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: DOX 813LP
"One of jazz music's best kept secrets, the blind Chicago-born pianist Lennie Tristano was a major innovator in his field and is considered one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time. He also broke major ground with the release of this album, Crosscurrents, in 1949, which is widely considered one of the earliest recordings ever made (if not THE earliest) in the free jazz style (years before his better-known colleague, Ornette Coleman). It is not only significant, however, because it is innovative, but also because the playing is consistently excellent. In addition to Tristano's sextet (featuring Lee Konitz and Wayne Marsh), we also hear clarinettist Buddy DeFranco's sextet (featuring Teddy Charles), and both DeFranco and trombonist Bill Harris playing with a big band."

Artist: MONK, THELONIOUS
Title: Plays Duke Ellington
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 814LP
"An absolute genius, Monk brought jazz piano to levels unheard before, both for composition and interpretation. A musician so ahead of his time that he was often sheepishly denied the credit he deserved, leaving to future and more finely tuned ears the capability to fully understand his potential. Doxy's plan to bring back the magnificent opus of this strong personality in music and art is now enriched with this incredible tribute to one of modern music maestros, along that same trail blazed by Duke Ellington. Faithfully re-released on 180 gram virgin vinyl, this 1955 album, originally released on Riverside, is back in black for all who want to experience the beauty of music on the grooves that it was made for. CDs? No thanks!"

Artist: MINGUS, CHARLES
Title: Trio
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: DOX 815LP
"With Dannie Richmond on drums and Hampton Hawes on piano (Sonny Clark plays only on 'I Can't Get Started') these 1957 NYC recordings represent Mingus' trio lineup at its best. Don't forget this is the year when East Coasting, Tijuana Moon and A Modern Jazz Symposium were released, proving 1957 to be an incredibly inspiring year for the man who reinvented double bass as a front line instrument. Remarkable in the trio formation are Mingus' powerful solos and hectic dialogues with Richmond's drumming. Absolut Jazz!"

Artist: DAVIS, MILES
Title: Miles 1954
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $32.00
Catalog #: DOX 816LP
"After playing cool jazz for a few years, Davis recorded an album called Walkin' and 'hard bop' was born. The year was 1954. Hard bop was still slower than bebop, but more driving than cool jazz. Where cool jazz is sometimes referred to as 'chamber jazz,' hard bop brought in elements of R&B and gospel. The Walkin' album is now considered to be one of Davis' seminal albums, with his all-star rhythm section playing behind him, Horace Silver on piano, and the one-two punch of Kenny Clarke on drums and Percy Heath on bass delivering the goods, as they always did. Heath and Clarke went on to do another important session that year with Davis, but in addition to Horace Silver on piano there was another genius of the ivories, Thelonious Monk. This, of course, was the infamous 'Christmas Eve session', which eventually became two albums, Bags' Groove (based on Milt Jackson's theme), and Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants. These two albums are important because they are one of the few instances of Davis and Monk playing together. 1954 was also a significant year because it was Davis' last year in relative obscurity, the following year he played 'Well You Needn't' at the Newport Jazz Festival and the rest is history. All this happened in 1954. And it's all on this Doxy album!"

Artist: DAVIS, MILES

"On May 11 and October 26, 1956 the Miles Davis Quintet, featuring John Coltrane on tenor sax, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and 'Philly' Joe Jones on drums, went into the studio to record two mammoth sessions in the Rudy Van Gelder studio. This studio time resulted in four legendary hard bop albums: Cookin', Relaxin', Workin', and Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quintet. For these sessions the quintet simply played their live set straight through, as if they were playing at a club. One take. That's it. And as a result, these albums are as close as anyone (who wasn't there) will ever come to knowing what one of the most memorable jazz combos in history must have sounded like live. The incredible tension between all five musicians shines through -- Miles' poised and sparing trumpet in stark contrast with Coltrane's more urgent and note heavy sax, backed by one of the best rhythm sections in jazz -- and the studio banter that can be heard makes it feel like you are in a stage-side seat. Interestingly, there is very little original material, but what we do have is a glimpse straight into the heart of what was popular in jazz music at the time. Because of the unique way in which these albums were recorded, it is only fitting that they be brought together in one package, and on vinyl as nature intended. Now they have also been remastered by the original sound engineer Rudy Van Gelder himself, who commented, 'I remember those sessions well, I remember how the musicians wanted to sound...Today, I feel strongly that I am their messenger.'"

Artist: MODERN JAZZ QUARTET, THE
Title: 2
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: DOX 818LP
This collection of recordings of 1954-55 completes the enhanced version of their first 10" released on Doxy (DOX 808LP) for an exhaustive overview of the combo's beginnings."

Artist: JACKSON & RAY CHARLES, MILT
Title: The Meeting Of The Soul Brothers
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: DOX 819LP
"A rare opportunity to hear this meeting between jazz giant and vibes pioneer, Milt Jackson, and the godfather of R&B / one of the greatest musicians of all time, Ray Charles! Originally released as two separate albums in 1958, - Soul Meeting, and Soul Brothers - this is the first time both of these legendary discs are available together on vinyl. Ironically, when this disc was released it was Jackson, with his pioneering Modern Jazz Quartet, who was the more famous of the two men. Here, being perhaps the greatest vibists of all time, he rocks the vibes and even tries his hand at a little guitar and piano. Brother Ray, on the other hand, wows us with his (and this is an understatement) AMAZING piano playing and...did you know he was also an excellent sax player? These albums have been highly praised by critics and fans alike as being true masterworks. Don't miss this 2LP!"

Artist: EVANS, BILL
Title: Everybody Digs Bill Evans
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: DOX 820LP
"Recorded in 1958 for Riverside, this was Evans' second album as leader, recorded shortly after he had officially left Miles Davis' legendary sextet and just before he returned to the sextet to record the era-defining Kind Of Blue. Miles took a lot of flack for giving his piano slot to a white musician when there were plenty of talented black pianists out there, but Miles Davis was not interested in getting a good pianist, he wanted an exceptional pianist, and that is exactly what Evans was. Like Miles Davis, Evans became the standard by which other jazz musicians measured their own playing, and now there is hardly a jazz piano player around that can say that he has not in some way been influenced by 'the Evans style of playing'. With fellow Davis sideman Philly Joe Jones on drums, and Dizzy Gillespie's bass man, Sam Jones, on the bass, this trio album captures Evans at a critical moment in his career, having proven himself to peers and critics alike (as the cover testifies -with high praise from Davis, Ahmad Jamal, George Shearing and Cannonball Adderley), not only this is a much more confident and personal album than his first one, but it documents a totally new style of jazz piano playing that went on to influence generations to come. The album includes three originals, including the acclaimed 'Peace Piece', along with Sonny Rollins' 'Oleo', also a favorite of Davis at the time, Cole Porter's 'Lucky to Be Me', and Gigi Gryce's 'Minority', among others. Also featured 'Some Other Time' as bonus track."

Artist: SUN RA
Title: Medicine For A Nightmare - The Singles
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 821LP
"Sun Ra: alien from Saturn or Herman Blount from Alabama? Either way, Sun Ra is one of the most interesting and prolific musicians in the history of jazz. Decades before his time, Sun Ra and his band, calling themselves the 'Arkestra,' began forming their own alternative reality, a new plane of cultural existence in which blacks were all powerful beings, gods from another planet sending their intergalactic message through jazz music. This idea went on to influence everyone from Funkadelic to the Outkast; in fact, when asked about Sun Ra, George Clinton once said, 'Yeah, Sun Ra is out to lunch, same place I eat at.' Do not miss this compilation of Sun Ra's rare early 7"s -- for the first time ever in one collection on vinyl!"

Artist: COLTRANE, JOHN
Title: A Day In The Life Of John Coltrane
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $32.00
Catalog #: DOX 822LP
"Recorded July 11, 1958 at Rudy Van Gelder's Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, this album is aptly named A Day In The Life Of John Coltrane because the entire contents of this double album w recorded in a single day. Originally available only on three separate LPs, this quintet session (featuring a hard-hitting Chambers-Cobb-Garland rhythm section) captures Coltrane at the top of his game, although he plays no original material. Coming to prominence in the mid-fifties as Miles Davis' sideman, Coltrane's own star quickly ascended (recorded just 9 months after his genre-busting Blue Train for Blue Note) and for a brief time burned brightly, hard to believe just 9 years later he'd be dead."

Artist: MINGUS, CHARLES
Title: The Complete Sessions Of 'The Clown'
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: DOX 823LP
"One of the most controversial and difficult musicians in jazz, Charles Mingus was also one of the most prolific, and perhaps the greatest bass player jazz has ever known. Released shortly after his groundbreaking Pithecanthropus Erectus, which marked the dawning of Mingus' era as a major player in jazz, The Clown took it to the next level and as a result captured some of the finest music Mingus ever made. Universally lauded as one of Mingus' best recordings, we are proud to offer the integral version of this seminal work. Listeners can now enjoy the complete sessions for the album, recorded on Feb 13 and March 12, 1957. Uniquely for a jazz player of this period, this album is comprised entirely of Mingus-penned tracks, including the explosive 'Haitian Fight Song' and his tribute to Charlie Parker 'Reincarnation of a Lovebird', while the title track features a spoken word piece by Jean Shepherd."

Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 824LP
"These recordings from March 13, 1958 see a 32-year-old John Coltrane playing an obscure date with little known jazz trumpeter / flugelhorn player, Wilbur Harden. These recordings made at the legendary Van Gelder studios also include Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass and Louis Hayes on drums (while the 2 bonus tracks feature Curtis Fuller on trombone, Ali Jackson on bass, Howard Williams on piano, and Arthur Taylor on drums). The immensely talented, but equally obscure Harden appeared on several Yusef Lateef and Curtis Fuller records for Savoy as well as leading his own sessions in the late fifties, only to drop out of the jazz scene entirely by 1960 due to health problems (and finally pass away in 1969). In fact, Harden was a great composer and a pioneer on the flugelhorn and all the tracks on this album are Harden compositions. Coltrane, as history has shown, fared much better, and during this period was just on the cusp of super-stardom. He was busy playing around NYC with Thelonious Monk, and had recently rejoined the Miles Davis sextet, and it would not be long before Coltrane would begin leading his own sessions, soon becoming a household name in jazz. 2 bonus tracks previously not included in the original album."

Artist: COLTRANE, JOHN
Title: Africa
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 825LP
"Recorded on June 24 1958 at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, NJ, these sessions (except for the bonus, 'Once In A While' ) feature original compositions by Wilbur Harden (best known for his work with Yusef Lateef and John Coltrane) and hard-bop trombonist Curtis Fuller (best known for his work with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and appearance on the classic Blue Trane album). The 32-year-old John Coltrane had only just recorded Blue Train a year earlier and it is interesting to hear his style beginning to stretch out, as he makes his musical transition from strict hard bop to the groundbreaking style that would become legendary the following year on Giant Steps, making Coltrane one of the biggest names in jazz."

Artist: COLTRANE, JOHN
Title: Trane Of August '57
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 826LP
"Recorded in 1957, a young Coltrane joins Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Arthur Taylor for an inspired showcasing of three Trane originals amid a ballad by Alonzo Levister and a revved up version of Irving Berlin's 'Soft Lights And Sweet Music.' Although Coltrane had only started recording a few years earlier, his style had already come into its own and, particularly on his originals like the bonus track 'Slowtrane,' it is interesting to hear how Coltrane manages to break into and impose himself on one of the tightest rhythm sections in jazz, giving listeners a fleeting glimpse of what Trane had in store for the future."

Artist: COLTRANE & CECIL TAYLOR, JOHN
Title: Coltrane Time
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 828LP
"Recorded in NYC on Oct 13, 1958, this album was originally released as Hard Driving Jazz (mono version) / Stereo Drive (stereo version) and the then 29-year-old pianist Cecil Taylor (not John Coltrane) originally got top billing on this date. This session is interesting because it is the only one Taylor ever did with Coltrane, and considering Taylor's status as one of the true founders of free jazz and Coltrane's status as jazz legend it is a kind of missing link in the history of jazz. Here the group plays two originals (one by trumpet player Kenny Dorham and one by bass man Chuck Israels), while the other two tracks 'Just Friends' and 'Like Someone In Love' are standards, an interesting look into early Taylor, because by the early sixties he was played almost exclusively original compositions. One of the most uncompromising and unique pianists in jazz, his difficult and percussive style has placed him in a class of his own, making him one of those artists you either love or hate...but love or hate him, there is no denying his contribution to jazz, and that his visionary music is still ahead of the pack."

Artist: HOLIDAY, BILLIE
Title: Lady Day
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $32.00
Catalog #: DOX 829LP
"Signed to Decca in 1944 to record one of her biggest hits, 'Lover Man', a song written especially for her, she continued recording for Decca throughout the forties, finally gaining the musical respect she so deserved. During this time she recorded some of her best material, including ''Tain't Nobody's Business If I Do,' 'Good Mornig Heartache,' 'Them There Eyes,' and 'Crazy He Calls Me.' The forties marked the height of her stardom, but also the beginning of her untimely demise; she notoriously got heavy into drugs, and in 1947 she was sentenced to prison for heroin possession. Despite this, these recordings represent some of her best work, and therefore some of the best music ever recorded in the genre. Holiday had finally climbed the ladder to success, and she got there not because she played by the rules, but precisely because she always refused to." Deluxe gatefold sleeve.

Artist: OTIS SHOW, JOHNNY
Title: The Greatest Show On Earth
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $32.00
Catalog #: DOX 830LP
"A key figure in the rise of early rock & roll and R&B, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Johnny Otis, was not only a drummer, but also a bandleader, historic nightclub owner, talent scout and songwriter, whose career stretched over half a century: no wonder he is called 'the godfather of R&B'! These 27 vintage tracks are taken from his earliest recordings for the Excelsior and Savoy labels, just as he was beginning to rise to stardom. These early Excelsior tracks (1945-1947) feature jazz-lover Otis, playing firmly in the big-band style of the day, and although Otis was not well-know at the time, his version of 'Harlem Nocturne' became a minor hit. In 1948 Otis made history by founding the first strictly R&B club, the Barrelhouse, located in the predominately black neighborhood of Watts (Los Angeles), which soon became the premiere stage for new talent. By 1949 Otis had signed a contract with Savoy, and began recording in the R&B style. Tracks like: 'Double Crossing Blues,' 'Mistrustin' Blues,' and 'Cupid's Boogie' went straight to number one, and in 1950 alone Otis had ten singles in the R&B Top Ten! These recordings, 1945-1951, commemorate one of America's true musical talents."

Artist: PAUL TRIO, LES
Title: Playing And Making The Guitar [1944-1947]
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $32.00
Catalog #: DOX 831LP
"Although from a historical standpoint Les Paul is perhaps best remembered for his invention of the solid-bodied electric guitar and his groundbreaking efforts in multi-tracking, this should not overshadow his considerable talent as a performer and virtuoso master of the guitar. Originally highly influenced by Django Reinhardt, by the time these recordings were made, Les Paul had developed a unique style that has gone on to influence countless others. The '40s marked Les' first taste of true stardom, whereupon moving to Hollywood, his newly formed Les Paul Trio began recording profusely and accompanying the most popular vocalists of the day. In fact, this album features Bing Crosby (who requires no introduction) on seven tracks! Les Paul also backed many other popular vocalists of the period, such as Helen Forrest, a popular singer of the big-band era, who sings on several Hawaiian-inspired tracks (which were much in vogue at the time, thanks to the popular films like 1937's Waikiki Wedding, starring Bing Crosby and 1942's Song of the Islands starring Betty Grable); the Delta Rhythm Boys (a popular proto-doo wop group of the '30s and '40s), found on two tracks; and Dick Haymes (a popular crooner who rivaled Crosby and Sinatra), also found on two tracks. Therefore, this album is not only a look into the amazing guitar playing of one of the greatest guitar players of the 20th century, but also a glimpse into the most popular music of the period."

Artist: PETERSON, OSCAR
Title: An Evening With Oscar Peterson
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 832LP
"Called 'The maharaja of the keyboard' by Duke Ellington, the Canadian-born Oscar Peterson was one of the shining stars of the jazz piano, and one of its most widely recorded, becoming a household name by the mid fifties. It can be said that Peterson was inspired by the Art Tatum school, but it can also be said that he used this as a jumping off point for his own truly unique style, characterized by incredible virtuosity on his instrument and tidal waves of notes. These rare recordings are taken from two sessions recorded by Peterson at the beginning of his career. The bulk of the music comes from an August 1950 session featuring fellow pianist Ray Brown, while the second session comes from a 1952 session featuring Peterson playing in a quartet format, featuring Ray Brown on bass, Barney Kessel on guitar, and Alvin Stoller on drums. Of the twelve tracks found here, half are, perhaps surprisingly for such a young pianist, dedicated to originals ('Salute to Garner', 'What Is It', 'Minor Blues' and 'Slow Down'), while the other half are dedicated to jazz standards like 'Caravan', 'I Get A Kick Out Of You', 'How High The Moon', 'What's New', etc."

Artist: DAVIS, MILES
Title: Lift To The Scaffold
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 833LP
"1958 film noir by the great Louis Malle, starring Jeanne Moreau and Maurice Ronet. Not only was the film genre defining, but so was the soundtrack by Miles Davis, propelling the young player and composer forward into the type of modal jazz that would soon make history. Amazingly a 24-year-old Malle, who had not yet made a feature length film, but who was a huge jazz fan, intercepted Miles Davis at the airport and managed to convince him to make the music for the film. Miles Davis and his musicians, who included the Kenny Clarke on drums, as well as three French musicians, improvised this soundtrack in one night, from dusk to dawn, while watching the film and occasionally consulting with Malle. The film, which can be considered a precursor to the New Wave of French cinema won Malle the prestigious Louis Delluc prize and it can also be stated that the very spirit of jazz and the New Wave of French cinema are contained in this film and its soundtrack."

Artist: ADDERLEY WITH MILT JACKSON, CANNONBALL
Title: Things Are Getting Better
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 834LP
"All star session recorded in NYC in the autumn of 1958, led by Cannonball Adderley on alto sax and Milt Jackson on vibes. The rhythm section is also no less noteworthy with Wynton Kelly on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Art Blakey on drums. This date represents an interesting and successful juxtaposition of the two sides of jazz at the time, with Adderley coming from the more improvisational and swinging side of downtown jazz and Jackson coming from the more cerebral side of jazz as 'high art.' But despite hailing from different sides of the scene, both men are considered venerable 'practitioners of the blues' and this is perhaps the tie that binds these men together on this memorable date. The group plays a range of tunes including two of Adderley's own compositions: the title track 'Things Are Getting Better' and 'Sounds For Sid' (dedicated to a favorite disc jockey of the time). Jackson also contributes one of his own themes with the original 'Blues Oriental,' which leads off the disc. They also play Dizzy's bop-era classic 'Groovin' High,' while Adderley presents his own modern take on 'The Sidewalks of New York.' An important meeting of top-shelf jazz musicians in a critical year in jazz history."

Artist: DEARIE, BLOSSOM
Title: Give Him The Ooh-La-La
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 835LP
"In the era of the Marilyn Monroe blond bombshell, Blossom Dearie was quietly driving men just as wild by being the innocently sexy girl-next-door. Her almost childlike voice is both unforgettable and uniquely recognizable and she has a way of captivating listeners in a way that only truly great singers can. The aptly titled Give Him the Ooh-La-La, recorded in 1957 for Verve, was Dearie's first release after returning home to NY after gaining popularity on the Paris vocal jazz scene, and is definitely one of her best. Here she sings standards like 'Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea' and Cole Porter's 'Just One of Those Things,' as well as some more surprisingly obscure material from her day, like 'They Say It's Spring,' 'I Walk a Little Faster' and 'The Riviera,' two Cy Coleman tunes. She also sings 'Plus je T'Embrasse,' in tribute to her days spent in Paris and also does her own piano accompaniment throughout."

Artist: COLEMAN, ORNETTE
Title: Tomorrow Is The Question
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 836LP
"Born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1930, Ornette Coleman began playing alto sax in 1944 and tenor soon after, and is almost entirely self-taught. From the beginning, Coleman chose the path less traveled, concerning himself with pitch and melody and trying to extract qualities of the human voice with his horn. The result was a sound in jazz that no one had ever heard before, sparking the 'free jazz' revolution, which soon became one of its major currents. Despite an early lack of comprehension over what Coleman was doing, the titles of his early albums suggest that Coleman himself knew exactly how his music would influence the jazz world (Tomorrow Is the Question, Something Else), it was just a question of time. This, Coleman's second album, recorded in 1959 in Los Angeles, was produced by one of Coleman's early supporters, Lester Koenig of the great Contemporary Records, and features Don Cherry on trumpet, Percy Heath/Red Mitchell on bass and Shelly Manne on drums. It was during this time that Coleman's career began to take off, thanks in part to John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet who got Coleman and Cherry spots at the School of Jazz in Lenox, Massachusetts. This same year Coleman recorded his watershed album The Shape of Jazz to Come."

Artist: COLEMAN, ORNETTE
Title: Something Else
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 837LP
"The aptly titled Something Else really was something else when it first hit the shops in 1958. Ornette Coleman's debut album sounded unlike anything the jazz world had ever heard before and like any true revolutionary he was simultaneously both heckled as a fraud and lauded as a genius of the future of jazz. Half a century later, and given Coleman's extraordinary influence in both the jazz and rock world, it is difficult to imagine that Coleman could have had a hard time getting work as a sideman, but his style was so unusual that even fellow jazz musicians thought he was 'out of tune.' Only a small group of people understood what he was trying to do at first, and this album, featuring Coleman playing his famous plastic alto sax, Don Cherry on trumpet, Billy Higgins on drums, Walter Norris on piano and Don Payne on bass, a landmark album in jazz, was so far ahead of its time that it still sounds fresh 50 years later."

Artist: MONK & JOHN COLTRANE, THELONIOUS
Title: At Reeves Sound Studios In New York City
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $32.00
Catalog #: DOX 838LP
"One of the few surviving recordings of one of the most memorable collaborations in the history of jazz. Monk and Coltrane's partnership lasted for roughly a five-month period during which they played six nights a week at the legendary Five Spot club in NYC. They still somehow had time left over to hit the studio however, as this album proves. Recorded in studio during the spring and summer of 1957, this album showcases Monk and Coltrane, with a supporting cast that included the great Art Blakey and Coleman Hawkins, playing all of Monk's classics."

Artist: MONK, THELONIOUS
Title: Brilliant Corners
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 839LP
"During his early years, Thelonious Monk was considered one of the 'most challenging, provocative and disturbing figures in modern music.' His music was considered difficult to listen to and understand, causing many fans initially to shy away from trying to 'dig Monk.' This album helped remedy that problem. Recorded in December 1956 for Riverside with a quartet featuring primarily Max Roach (percussion), Sonny Rollins (tenor sax), Oscar Pettiford (bass), Ernie Henry (alto sax), Clark Terry (trumpet), Brilliant Corners, an album of mostly self-penned numbers, is one of his greatest recordings. While still not casual listening, its pure brilliance and vitality can reach just about any listener."

Artist: SUN RA & HIS ARKESTRA
Title: Jazz In Silhouette
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 840LP
"Released on Ra's own Saturn label in 1958 and originally only available at gigs, until its re-release on Impulse in 1975. For its unique ability to look both forward and backward at the same time, Silhouette is one Sun Ra's finest of the period. Ra is able to revisit swing and be-bop while somehow still managing to stay at the forefront of jazz... perhaps Sun Ra's music really did come from his own experiences in outer space as he often claimed. Outstanding performances by tenor saxophonist John Gilmore, often called 'Sun Ra's Johnny Hodges', particularly on 'Blues At Midnight'. John Gilmore was one of the longest standing members of the Arkestra. Special mention is also due to trumpeter Herbert Dotson who can be heard on this early version of 'Enlightenment', one of Ra's greatest pieces, co-writtten with Dotson. Its theme was often chanted by Sun Ra & members of the Arkestra as they ran down through the theatre at the end of their sets. Also featuring standout track 'Ancient Aiethopia', which alone makes this album an important entry in Sun Ra's voluminous discography."

Artist: BLAKEY, ART
Title: Orgy In Rhythm
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $32.00
Catalog #: DOX 841LP
"Originally released as two separate LPs on Blue Note and recorded at Manhattan Towers on March 7, 1957, NYC, this LP was the brain child of Art Blakey and founder of Blue Note Records, Alfred Lion. Although Blue Note recorded some of the biggest names in jazz, one of Lion's favorite artists was Art Blakey. After years of watching Blakey play any chance he got, Lion proposed Blakey do an all drum session for Blue Note. Although many tried to dissuade Lion from doing the album, not seen as commercially viable, he thankfully went ahead and recorded this cutting-edge album. While Art Blakey was in charge of choosing the jazz line-up (Joe Jones, Specs Wright, Herbie Mann,Wendell Marshall, Ray Bryant), the great conguero Sabu Martinez was in charge of choosing the Latin players. The resulting album penned a new chapter in jazz drumming, and is still today is recognized as one of the classics of the genre. Art Blakey himself called the track 'Ya Ya' one of his greatest achievements."

Artist: MONK & SONNY ROLLINS, THELONIOUS
Title: The Prestige Sessions
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 842LP
"Although Sides A & B were both originally released as two separate ten-inch albums on Bob Weinstock's Prestige Records, all tracks (recorded at two separate sessions in 1953 and 1954) have both Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins playing on them. Side A was recorded at WOR studio in NYC on Friday, Nov. 13, 1953, and although 'Friday the 13th' had indeed seemingly brought bad luck upon some of the players (just before the session Sonny Rollins was in a car accident and trumpeter Ray Copeland fell ill and had to be replaced at the last minute by the king of the French horn, Julius Watkins), the session itself was quite successful. The three tracks recorded: 'Let's Call This', 'Think of One', and 'Friday the Thirteenth', were all Monk originals being recorded here for the first time. 'Friday the Thirteenth', an amazing track, is alone worth the purchase of the album. Along with Monk, Rollins and Watkins, the quintet is filled out by the great Percy Heath and Willie Jones. Side B, on the other hand, originally released on Prestige as prlp 190, is a quartet session led by Sonny Rollins at Van Gelder Studio on Oct. 25, 1954, and featuring Thelonious Monk, Tommy Potter and Art Taylor. For this session the quartet recorded three standards: 'I Want To Be Happy' and 'The Way You Look Tonight' and 'More Than You Know', which are all duly given the Monk / Rollins deluxe overhaul. It's kind of like your old car with a jet engine. These songs have never sounded this good before or since! An essential and historic LP!"

Artist: BAKER QUARTET, CHET
Title: Jazz At Ann Arbor
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 843LP
"After rising to fame as the bright new star of West Coast cool jazz, and winning a slew of polls, Chet Baker took his show on the road, touring all over the U.S., including a stopover in the college town of Ann Arbor, MI for their spring music festival in 1954. Recorded live, this quartet performance, featuring Russ Freeman on piano, Carson Smith on bass, and Bob Neel on drums was one of the first recordings of Baker fronting his own group, but already Baker was arguably at the top of his game. His smooth and seemingly effortless lines hang in the air like threads of perfectly spun silk, as the rhythm section, led by a flawless Russ Freeman, works overtime. Thanks to impeccable live dates such as this one, Baker's devotees became increasingly numerous, and for a fleeting moment it seemed as if nothing could stop this rising star of jazz."

Title: 5 By Monk By 5
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 844LP
"Recorded in 1959 for Riverside, Thelonious Monk's 5 By Monk By 5 is exactly that: 5 Monk originals played in a quintet setting. Monk, who was famous for trying to showcase many of the lesser-known talents out there, uses this album as an opportunity to highlight the cornet playing of Thad Jones, and the two new pieces on this album--'Jackie-ing' (named for Monk's niece) and 'Played Twice'--were written with Jones' cornet playing in mind. The quintet is filled out by Charlie Rouse (tenor sax), Sam Jones (bass), and Art Taylor (drums). Rouse would go on to become one of Monk's main sidemen over the next decade." 180 gram vinyl.

Title: Thelonious Alone In San Francisco
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 845LP
"When jazz music is so often a delicate balance of sounds all coming together to form a complete whole, it is interesting to hear how a jazz legend of this caliber handles himself when all alone under the bright lights. Monk's style of piano playing was nothing short of revolutionary when he first came onto the jazz scene in the 1940s, and there is no way to hear this more clearly than on an album of unaccompanied piano solos such as this one. Recorded in 1959 in San Francisco, Monk plays his own classic compositions like 'Ruby, My Dear' and 'Blue Monk,' along with some pieces composed particularly for this album, including 'Round Lights' and 'Bluehawk'." 180 gram vinyl.

Artist: HOLIDAY, BILLIE
Title: The 'Commodore' Days
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 846LP
"In 1939 when Billie Holiday's label refused to record the highly controversial 'Strange Fruit', she did not give up, but searched desperately for a label that was not afraid to take a risk. Thankfully Milt Gabler at Commodore Records, a fledgling independent jazz label, understood the importance of this song being recorded and released to the public and soon arranged for Holiday to record a session with him. The 'Strange Fruit session' for Commodore, was one of those historic moments and part of Billie Holiday's legend hinges on the tremendous courage it took for her go ahead and record this song, knowing that it might well mean the end of her career. Three other songs, found here, were also recorded at that session: 'Yesterdays', 'Fine And Mellow' and 'I Gotta Right To Sing the Blues', while due to contractual issues, the remaining Commodore sides were not recorded until five years later in 1944." 180 gram vinyl.

Artist: BAKER, CHET
Title: Chet
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 847LP
"Every musician has his area of expertise and for Chet Baker that area was the ballad. Therefore, this album dedicated entirely to ballads, gives listeners a chance to hear Baker doing what he does best -- and when Chet Baker does what he does best, he does it better than any other trumpet player in the history of jazz. For this session, recorded on December 30, 1958 at NYC's Reeves Sound Studios, the poster child of West Coast cool jazz (who had just turned twenty-nine) assembled a superlative East Coast sextet that featured the unusual front-line combination of flute (Herbie Mann), trumpet (Baker) and baritone (Pepper Adams), departing occasionally from this format, however, to showcase the guitar playing of Kenny Burrell. Pianist Bill Evans, Philly Joe Jones (drums), Paul Chambers (bass), all well-known for their association with Miles Davis, and all some of the top names in jazz are also featured here, along with drummer Connie Kay of the Modern Jazz Quartet. This album represents some of the last studio work Baker did before emigrating permanently to Europe. It also includes one of Baker's own compositions, 'Early Morning Mood,' recorded at the same studio and with the same line-up on January 19, 1959 as a bonus track." 180 gram vinyl.

Artist: BAKER, CHET
Title: Live In Florence 1956
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 848LP
"In 1955, a 26-year-old Chet Baker made his first trip to Europe. Over a period of about six months, Baker toured Italy, Germany, France and Denmark. On January 24, 1956 Baker gave this quintet performance in Florence, Italy at the prominent music conservatory 'Conservatorio Cherubini,' using all European players, some of whom (Francy Boland and Eddie De Haas) Baker liked so much that he invited them back to the States to continue playing with him." 180 gram vinyl.

Title: Chet Baker In New York
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 849LP
"For much of the 1950s the so-called 'East Coast' vs. 'West Coast' debate raged on in modern jazz circles. Such arguments were not halted by this 1958 album, but it did give listeners some food for thought, for here Chet Baker, one of the stars of 'cool jazz', gets together with some of the most representative members of the East Coast's 'hard bop' school. On three long tracks Chet teams up with Johnny Griffin, one of the most talented tenors of his day (associated largely with Thelonious Monk and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers) as well as a stand-out rhythm section featuring pianist Al Haig, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. This all-star rhythm section trio drives Chet through tunes like Miles Davis' 'Solar', and adds texture and lift to ballads like 'Blue Thoughts' and 'Polka Dots' and 'Moonbeams', creating an album unlike any other Chet had recorded before." 180 gram vinyl.

Artist: GARLAND, RED
Title: All Kinds Of Weather
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 850LP
"Recorded in November of 1958, All Kinds Of Weather finds Red Garland heading up one of several late-fifties trio sessions at the Rudy Van Gelder studio in Hackensack, NJ. As always, the trio is formed by Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. By the time this album was released these three jazz greats were intimately acquainted with each other, having performed and recorded together on numerous occasions, and it shows. Using 'the weather' as a common theme, this exceptional trio seamlessly performs standards like George Gershwin's 'Summertime' (from Porgy & Bess), 'Stormy Weather' (originally written for Cab Calloway), and the classic Christmas tune, 'Winter Wonderland'. Just one in a string of memorable late-fifties sides by Garland for Prestige." On 180 gram vinyl.

Artist: WILLETTE, BABY FACE
Title: Face To Face
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 851LP
"Although not as well known as label mate Jimmy Smith, Baby Face Willette's (1933-1971) contribution to the jazz organ should not be overlooked. In fact, his 1961 debut on Blue Note, Face To Face -- featuring Fred Jackson on tenor sax and Ben Dixon on drums (both unsung heroes of jazz) and the great Grant Green on guitar -- is an amazingly groovy soul jazz affair with Smith proving that he isn't afraid to get downright funky on the Hammond B-3 (check out 'Something Strange' and 'Goin Down' for proof). Of the album's six tracks, five are Willette's own compositions."

Artist: COLTRANE/TOMMY FLANAGAN/KENNY BURRELL, JOHN
Title: The Cats
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 852LP
"1957 may have been a watershed year for jazz, but this session, recorded for Prestige on April 18 at the Rudy Van Gelder Studio in NJ, was still a cut above the rest. While Coltrane may be the big name draw here, this session was actually led by pianist Tommy Flanagan, who would go on to be Ella Fitzgerald's accompanist in the sixties, and appear on a number of historic jazz sessions including Coltrane's Giant Steps, and Sonny Rollins' Saxophone Colossus. In fact, every composition on this album was written by Flanagan, except for Gershwin's 'How Long Has This Been Going On?', performed here in trio form. Also features some truly superlative trumpet playing by Idrees Sulieman, best known for his association with Coleman Hawkins." On 180 gram vinyl.

Title: Akira Kurosawa's Movie Soundtracks 1950-1958
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 4LP
Price: $72.00
Catalog #: DOY 002LP
"Doxy brings you this deluxe 4LP set of Akira Kurosawa's most celebrated soundtracks in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of this great master of Japanese cinema! Akira Kurosawa's films dominated Japanese cinema for nearly half a century and his influence has been so widespread and profound that the world's best filmmakers seem to unanimously sing his praise. He first gained the attention of the international filmmaking community in 1951 when his masterpiece, Rashomon, won top prize at the Venice Film Festival. It was during this time that Kurosawa also began collaborating with the award-winning composer Fumio Hayasaka. The two great men soon formed a deep connection, with Kurosawa later commenting that Hayasaka caused him to see film music as a 'counterpoint' to the image instead of a mere 'accompaniment'. Another promising young composer, Masaru Satō, soon joined the ranks at Toho Studios, working under Hayasaka. However, when Hayasaka died suddenly in 1955, Satō was left on his own to finish the unfinished film score. Kurosawa was so impressed with the results that he asked Satō to score his next two films, Throne of Blood and The Hidden Fortress. Includes soundtracks to: Rashomon (1950), the dramatic Ikiru aka 'To Live' (1952), the epic Seven Samurai (1954), Record of A Living Being aka 'I Live in Fear' (1955), 1957's much celebrated adaptation of Macbeth, Throne of Blood, and 1958's The Hidden Fortress." Deluxe 4-fold gatefold 4LP set. One of FACT magazine's 20 best collectible records of 2010.

Artist: HERRMANN, BERNARD
Title: Alfred Hitchcock's Movie Soundtracks
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 4LP
Price: $72.00
Catalog #: DOY 003LP
"This 4 album set includes the original mono soundtrack to Hitchcock's The Wrong Man (1956), and the original stereo soundtracks to Vertigo (1958) and North by Northwest (1959) by Bernard Herrmann, one of the greatest film composers in the history of cinema. Besides working with Hitchcock, he wrote the scores to several other classics: Citizen Kane, Taxi Driver, and Cape Fear, to name a few. Not to mention working with Orson Welles back in the days of radio, and even directing the music to the ill-fated War of the Worlds broadcast in 1938. However, unlike most other musical directors, Herrmann insisted on complete creative control over his music and once said, 'I have the final say, or I don't do the music'. Herrmann also said that Hitchcock would in fact astonishingly shorten or lengthen the scenes to fit his music. Do not miss these classic soundtracks to some of Hitchcock's best films." Deluxe 4-fold gatefold 4LP set featuring extensive sleeve notes about each score and pictures of the original movie posters.

Artist: SMITH, HARRY
Title: Harry Smith's Complete Anthology Of American Folk Music
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 8LP
Price: $165.00
Catalog #: DOY 004LP
"Now for the first time ever all together on vinyl a complete box set: 4 double LPs featuring the 3 original double LP volumes (Ballads, Social Music, Songs) along with the great LOST Country Music & Bluegrass double LP that remained unissued for almost 50 years. Compiled by Harry Smith contemporaneously with the first three volumes (which were originally released in 1952), it includes tracks by the Monroe Bros., Carter Family, Robert Johnson, Bukka White, Lead Belly, Uncle Dave Macon and Sleepy John Estes and more! The box set is actually not a 'box', but is modelled after the old 78 rpm multiple record storage sleeve, where the albums are stored in sleeves that are pages in a book. The importance of Harry Smith's work can not be overstated. Not only did he single-handedly save much of American folk music from extinction, but when he handed his record collection over to Smithsonian folkways in 1952, he opened the floodgates for the American folk revival of the following decade. Not since John and Alan Lomax had anyone paid so much attention to saving the American folk song from extinction, but unlike the Lomaxes, Smith was not a government worker armed with a tape recorder, he was just a guy from Portland, Oregon armed with a love of music and an insatiable curiosity. So, when the U.S. Armed Forces began melting down old records to be used as shellac during WWII, Smith kicked into high gear, buying up as many old 78s from the '20s and '30s as he could find. Much of the music found here then comes from a time before television -- arm-in-arm with rock & roll -- began beaming its über-culture into every household in America, erasing much of what had grown up locally. Prior to WWII, America was in many ways no more than a patchwork of territories, with distinct local cultures and musical traditions reaching both far into the immigrant past of each area's inhabitants, but also into a future firmly rooted in the newness and adventure (as well as hardships) of life on this new continent."

Artist: WILLIAMS, HANK
Title: Six More Miles To The Graveyard
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 6LP BOX
Price: $135.00
Catalog #: DOY 005LP
"Once in a great while a truly superlative musical talent comes along, it only happens a handful of times per century, and one of those times 'it' was Hank Williams. Despite his swift and total rise to superstardom by the age of 25, by 29 he was dead in the back of his own Cadillac...but it is what happened in the interim that made all the difference. While America, returning victorious from the War in 1945, attempted to create an image of a invincibility, wealth and power, there was a guy with a guitar from a place called 'Wrong Side of the Tracks' who had another story to tell, a story that, amid all the propaganda and ticker tape parades, Americans could relate to and -- judging from the record sales -- obviously wanted to hear. From 1947 to 1953 Hank Williams recorded 66 songs under his own name, of which 37 were hits, enough to last country music stations for the next half a century and beyond. Songs like 'Cold Cold Heart', 'Hey Good Lookin'', 'Your Cheatin' Heart', 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry', and many more, have become standards in American music. These 6 LPs: I Saw The Light, Honky Tonkin', Sing Me A Blue Song, Ramblin' Man, Sings, and Montgomery, were originally mostly released in the 10" format between 1954 and 1959 (and were themselves a collection of various studio sessions and previous '78s), except for Sings, originally released in 1951, and Montgomery, a collection of rare early private recordings, radio airchecks and demos, with the earliest recording being 'Happy Rovin' Cowboy', from 1939, when Hank was just 16 years old. Now collected together in a luxury edition box set!"

Artist: KEROUAC, JACK
Title: The Beat Generation According To Jack Kerouac
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 4LP
Price: $72.00
Catalog #: DOY 006LP
"After several years spent searching for a publisher for On The Road, in 1957 Jack Kerouac's fortune finally changed as he literally became a star overnight, thanks to rave reviews by the New York Times and others who heralded Kerouac as the voice of a new generation. It was during this initial period of fame (1957-1959) that Kerouac also recorded a trio of albums. His first effort, Poetry For The Beat Generation, was recorded at the Village Vanguard in 1957 with soon-to-be pop icon Steve Allen on piano. The album was not released, however, until 1959 due to controversy over the album's racy content. Despite this controversy (or perhaps because of it) Kerouac was asked to make another album, Blues And Haikus, soon afterwards. This time Kerouac chose musician friends Zoot Sims and Al Cohn to accompany him, and this rapport resulted in a much more cohesive effort. 1959's Readings by Jack Kerouac on the Beat Generation, on the other hand, is an entirely spoken word piece. Here Kerouac freely improvised on his own writings, using his own voice as an instrument. While the first three albums were actual albums, The Last Word is a collection of outtakes from the Blues And Haikus sessions, a recording of a college lecture given by Kerouac in November 1958, and an appearance he made on a popular television show in November 1959. This deluxe 4LP comes in a 'book style' sleeve, with each 'page' containing one of the four albums and a reproduction of each album's original artwork."

Title: Andy Warhol's Jazz Album Covers (Vol. 1)
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format:
Price: $75.00
Catalog #: DOY 007LP
"Doxy presents two box set collections of the rare jazz album covers designed by Andy Warhol in the 1950s. Everyone knows about the Velvet Underground & Nico cover or the Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers, but Warhol actually designed more than fifty album covers over the course of his career. A few years ago one might have been able to pick up a used copy of some of these albums for a few bucks, but since the publication of Paul Marechal's 2008 book Andy Warhol: The Record Covers (1949-1987)and the 2009 Warhol Live exhibition--the first ever comprehensive retrospective of Andy Warhol's album cover artwork--original copies have been known to change hands for thousands of dollars. For the most part three out of the four albums in each box have never been reissued on vinyl, and a few have also never been issued on CD, making this box set your only chance to own these Warhols. The four jazz albums collected in each box all come from that very exciting time in Warhol's career (1954-58) when he, in addition to being a successful commercial designer, was also an up and coming fine artist. Through these covers, we can also see the evolution of Warhol's 'blotted ink' style, which would become a hallmark of his later work. The calligraphic writing employed on some of the albums was done by Warhol's mother. Her distinct handwriting would grace many of her son's works over the years." Albums: Monk by Thelonious Monk; Count Basie & His Orchestra by Count Basie; Trombone by Three by Jay Jay Johnson, Kai Winding, and Bennie Green (2LP); and Vol. 2 by Kenny Burrell. Numbered, limited edition of 500 copies.

Artist: ALLISON, MOSE
Title: Back Country Suite
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: DOY 610LP
"Mississippi Delta pianist and singer/songwriter Mose Allison may not be a household name for many, but his songs have been covered and admired by everyone from the Rolling Stones to Van Morrison, The Who, Elvis Costello, The Clash, Eric Clapton, and Bonnie Raitt, to name just a few. His debut album, Back Country Suite, draws on his upbringing in rural Mississippi. It fuses rural blues/jazz with modern classical composition, and wordsmithing that is second to none. It was released to massive critical acclaim in 1957."

Artist: DONEGAN, LONNIE
Title: Showcase
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: DOY 611LP
"Although for many his name has long since faded into obscurity, there was a time, during the mid-fifties, when in Britain Lonnie Donegan, to quote Paul McCartney, was 'the man'. He had just invented a new style of music, skiffle, and every teenager in Britain was racing out to the record shops to snap up anything the man recorded, including his debut LP Showcase, originally released on Pye in 1956, which featured acoustic folk-blues standards like 'Frankie & Johnny', and 'I'm A Ramblin' Man'. In 1956, he was not only England's premier bluesman, but he was perhaps most importantly also one of the first rock & roll stars in the mode of Elvis Presley (before Elvis was King) and is credited with priming the pumps for the musical deluge that was soon to come. 'He was the first person we had heard of from Britain to get to the coveted No. 1 in the charts, and we studied his records avidly. We all bought guitars to be in a skiffle group. He was the man.' -- Paul McCartney"

Artist: HALEY AND HIS COMETS, BILL
Title: Rock Around The Clock
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: DOY 613LP
"Bill Haley was playing rock & roll before anyone even knew what it was, launching the style that paved the way for every other rock & roll singer, including Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, and Chuck Berry. He was also the first rock singer to tour Europe and score hits there. By the time this LP was released in 1956, Haley had already scored hits with 'Crazy, Man, Crazy' and most significantly 1955's 'Rock Around the Clock', which eventually sold somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 million copies. Although usually equated with the birth of Rock & Roll, it was not until the release of the historic 1956 film, Blackboard Jungle, starring Glenn Ford (where 'Rock Around the Clock' is the theme song) that the copies started to fly off the shelves."

Artist: DUPREE, CHAMPION JACK
Title: Blues From The Gutter
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: DOY 614LP
"One of the greatest and most adventurous pianists of the blues scene since the Thirties, when as a young man he began travelling the United States in search of his soul, William Dupree was initially more known for using his hands in another manner. Lured to professional boxing by the mythic Joe Louis whom he had met in Chicago, Dupree with the self-explanatory nickname of 'Champion' Jack Dupree was more known for his KO skills than musical skills throughout the thirties. He later resumed his early passion and began playing his straight, in-your-face blues tunes, often singing about life's hardships, addiction and drug use. After serving in World War II, he became a major source of inspiration to the blues revival scene in the UK in the early Sixties, when this album - originally released in 1958 - began fitting exactly the raunchy blues attitude of the young beatniks of the fast growing British cities."

Artist: FEATHERS, CHARLIE
Title: Liaison Field
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: DOY 615LP
"Stunning compilation of singles/ b-sides from 1956 to 1958 on Sun and King Records for this unquestionable hero of country/rockabilly who also cut a single for Elvis Presley during his Sun Records period (I Forgot To Remember To Forget). Feathers had a long career, reinventing himself in the seventies and the eighties, and was the source of inspiration for a number of rockabilly revival bands. Who does not remember The Cramps' rendition of 'Can't Hardly Stand It' or his collaboration with Tav Falco's Panther Burns? The glory Feathers deserves was epitomized in Quentin Tarantino's rediscovery of his classic tune 'That Certain Female' for one of the epic scenes in the director's absolute masterpiece, Kill Bill."

Title: First Steps (From 1955 To 1958)
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $32.00
Catalog #: DOY 616LP
"Before there was a Man In Black, there were the Sun Records years, when Cash began defining his peculiar and witty version of country music. Born in Arkansas in 1932, Cash began recording as a top artist for Sun Records, for which he released his first full-length LP. This double LP set documents all the hits from 1955 to 1958, before Cash signed to Columbia Records. These 35 'First Steps' helped build the legend and are considered the milestones of an incredible career that ended with those passionate and soulful albums on the American Recordings series released between 1994 and 2003, the year JR Cash died on Sept 12."

Artist: GAINSBOURG, SERGE
Title: Du Chant A La Une! Volume 1 & 2
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 617LP
"Gainsbourg's fabulous 10" debut album and its immediate follow up -- still on 10" - are now back to life in this Doxy release that collects both these rare gems. Released in 1958 and 1959, they belong to Gainsbourg's chansonnier period, and they're far from that style that gave us his late minimalistic pop atmospheres for which he is well known. But they are already a nice take on Gainsbourg's future smokey night club attitude that later helped consolidate his maudit character, that sleazy sexy motherfucker that seems to be encrusted in the grooves of each of his most famous scratchy vinyls of the seventies. Allez l'homme a tete de chou..."

Artist: JACKSON, WANDA
Title: Wanda Jackson
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 622LP
On 180 gram vinyl. "Originally released in 1958, by the time her debut album came out Jackson, only 21 at the time, was already a seasoned performer. Discovered while still in high school singing country for an Oklahoma City radio station, by 1955 she was touring with Elvis Presley, who encouraged her to sing more in the rockabilly style, where she soon gained a huge fan base. However, this first album for Capitol shows just how versatile she could be, able to sing anything from traditional country to pop. She was also, interestingly the first country singer to bring a more glamourous style (one that would soon become standard in the country world) into her stage image, thanks to her mother's handmade flashy stage costumes. Contains 6 bonus tracks from the CD version."

Artist: GUTHRIE, WOODY
Title: Dust Bowl Ballads
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 623LP
180 gram vinyl. "This is the first record that 'the Oklahoma cowboy' recorded in NYC after his arrival in 1940 for Alan Lomax as part of his work for the Library of Congress. Originally released as three separate 78 rpm records, these are Guthrie's tales about one of the most dire periods in rural America, the Dust Bowl era (also known as the Dirty Thirties). Repressed by Smithsonian Folkways in 1964 during the American folk revival years, this quintessential work proves that Guthrie was a true minstrel of the other face of America, the one that you can't find in history books: tales of poverty, migration, storms, illness, hunger and harsh criticism of the American government, incapable of committing to equality. Guthrie would become very popular among city radicals and idealists, and thanks to records like this, a true icon of social activism in the cradle of capitalism."

Title: Harry Smith's Anthology Of American Folk Music Vol. 1
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $32.00
Catalog #: DOY 625LP
2011 repress. On clear vinyl with insert. Volume 1: Ballads. "The importance of Harry Smith's work can not be overstated. Not only did he single-handedly save much of American folk music from extinction, but when he handed his record collection over to Smithsonian Folkways in 1952, he opened the floodgates for the American folk revival of the following decade. Not since John and Alan Lomax had anyone paid so much attention to saving the American folk song from extinction, but unlike the Lomaxes, Smith was not a government worker armed with a tape recorder, he was just a guy from Portland, Oregon armed with a love for music and an insatiably curious mind. So, when the U.S. Government began melting down old records to be used as shellac during WWII, Smith kicked into high gear, buying up as many old 78s from the '20s and '30s as he could find. Much of the music found here then, comes from a time before television, arm-in-arm with rock & roll, began beaming its über-culture into every household in America erasing much of what had grown up locally in each area. As can be heard so beautifully on these ballads, prior to WWII America was in many ways no more than a patchwork of territories, with local cultures and musical traditions reaching both far into the immigrant past of each area's inhabitants, but also into the future to create something wonderful and firmly rooted in the newness and adventure of life on this new continent."

"The 'social music' that grew up in this time period was both 'social' in the sense of 'social gathering' (barn dances, religious gatherings, etc.), but also in the sense of 'social issues' (labor rights, migration, money troubles, etc.). Their music was, therefore, a reflection of their lives, serving both as respite from their troubles (these were desperate times: the dust bowl, the depression, tenement housing, sweat shops, etc., were all part of the these people's everyday lives), but also as a vehicle for their discontent." Title: Du Jazz Dans Le Ravin
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 628LP
"Serge Gainsbourg (1928-1991): the original bad boy of French pop, the man all women wanted and all men wanted to be. He updated the French chanson and made it hip again, infusing it with the youth culture of the late 50s and 60s: one that was ruled by jazz, drugs and free love. The music of Gainsbourg heralded in this new era and his earliest songs became the soundtrack for a generation of Parisian youths. Side A features songs that originally appeared in 1959 on his second album (here in stereo), No. 2. Here Gainsbourg fronts the Alain Goraguer et Son Orchestre on songs like 'Le Claqueur de Doigts,' a song about seducing chicks at a jukebox....a standard operating tactic for Gainsbourg! While side B features material from his 1958 debut, Du Chant a la Lune!, which featured early hits like 'Le Poinçonneur Des Lilas' the morbid tale of a Paris Metro ticket man who contemplates suicide to free him from the monotony of his life. Tracks 1-3 on side B were recorded live at the 'Theatre des 3 Baudets' in November, 1958, while tracks 8-10 are taken from Gainsbourg's score for Jacques Doniol-Valcroze's 1960 film L'Eau a la Bouche (A Game for Six Lovers). While it has always been somewhat difficult for English audiences to appreciate Gainsbourg, due to the language barrier that keeps us from fully appreciating the sharp wit and raunchy innuendos that permeate his brilliant lyrical style, I find that if I allow the music to carry me to the world of 1960s Parisian vice, my imagination can fill in the rest!"

Title: The Man Of The Blues 1948-1959
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $32.00
Catalog #: DOY 629LP
"After years spent traveling and playing music across the South, towards the end of WWII, Hooker, like so many other Delta-born bluesmen, ended up in Detroit. After a few years spent rising up through the ranks of the legendary Hastings Street scene and purchasing his first electric guitar, in 1948 the 31-year-old blues guitarist finally got his first big break. With the help of agent Bernie Besman, and L.A.'s Modern Records, Hooker's first single Boogie Chillen, unexpectedly went to the top of the R&B charts. The next few years, documented in this album, were a whirlwind of hits for Hooker, who often hopped from label to label whenever the opportunity arose, changing his name to escape contracts, before finally ending up at Vee-Jay in 1955. And the hits piled up. Throughout the fifties, Hooker spread his own brand of raw, foot-stomping Delta blues across America, and the world, becoming one of the most idolized and imitated musicians in the history of blues, and paving the way for the blues-based rock & roll explosion of the 1960s."

Title: King Of The Delta Blues: The Complete Recordings
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 3LP BOX
Price: $60.00
Catalog #: DOY 630BOX
"Despite his untimely death, the man managed to squeeze in a lot in his 27 short years on this earth, enough to earn him the title of 'King of the Delta Blues'. Pretty impressive, given the competition! Johnson's style has influenced everyone from Muddy Waters to Eric Clapton and he is widely considered to be one of the greatest guitar players to have ever lived! A widely reported legend of Johnson selling his soul to the Devil in order to gain prowess on the guitar seems likely given the talent the man possessed. This triple LP box set chronicles his short but legendary career, featuring everything Johnson ever recorded, including the many songs that made him famous and have long since become blues standards. Absolutely essential in any collection!" Includes poster and 8-page, large-format book with lyrics.

Title: Montgomery
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 631LP
"A collection of rare early private recordings, radio airchecks and demos by the man who single-handedly penned many of today's country music standards. The first recording featured here, 'Happy Rovin' Cowboy', is from 1939, when Hank was just 16 years old. He began making his own private recordings in recording booths, often simulating radio show performances in an attempt to impress a real station. Hank got his first gig at a real station, however, by playing outside the entrance WFSA in Montgomery until they finally invited him to play inside. Soon 'The Singin' Kid', as he was then known, became so popular with local audiences that he got his own show, dropped out of high school, formed his own band and began touring all over the South. Hank was soon fired from WFSA, however, for 'habitual drunkenness', but this did little to stall his career. If anything, it was WWII that slowed the entire recording industry down, but nonetheless Hank still managed to get some demos out during this time, many of which are included here. By 1948, Hank had his first massive country hit and was off to greener pastures, namely Shreveport, Louisiana and the legendary Louisiana Hayride." 180 gram virgin vinyl.

Title: Shreveport Sessions
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $32.00
Catalog #: DOY 632LP
"When Hank arrived in Shreveport in August 1948, KWKH's now legendary Louisiana Hayride (but at the time just one of many popular radio barn dance's being broadcast across the South) had yet to attract a major act (Elvis, Johnny Cash, Faron Young, Webb Pierce, Jim Reeves, and Slim Whitman all came after), and Hank himself was barely known outside of Montgomery. Hank managed nonetheless to get a spot on the Hayride (sponsored by the Johnnie Fair syrup company), which he held down until May of the following year, when the success of 'Lovesick Blues' meant that Hank was on to the bright lights of Nashville. During this period (Aug. 1948-May 1949) Hank made a number of recordings, including several acetates that were recorded for KWKH to broadcast when Hank was away on other engagements. This material, almost entirely comprised of Hank singing other artists' songs, gives fans an enlightening glimpse of Hank's many influences and how his style developed over the years. However, Hank also recorded acetates of his own material while he was with the Hayride, mostly with Curley Williams, which he sent over to Acuff-Rose in Nashville, and these are also included here."

Title: Nashville Sessions
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $32.00
Catalog #: DOY 633LP
"In 1951 Hank Williams was ready for the big time, and in country music that meant Nashville, Tennessee, The Grand Ole Opry, and particularly the Acuff-Rose Music company. Acuff-Rose, run by Grand Ole Opry Star Roy Acuff and professional song writer Fred Rose, was the first Nashville-based music company and the mainstay of country music for many years. Here, under Rose's tutelage, Hank's true talent began to shine and his songs just got better and better. This double LP is a collection of Hank's work from 1949-1952, with disc one being a collection of demos recorded during Hank's brief time in Nashville, including alternate versions of the three songs-- 'Kaw-Liga,' 'Your Cheatin' Heart,' and 'Jambalaya'--that Hank took to the top of the charts. The demo version of 'Kaw-Liga', which Hank co-wrote with Fred Rose, is very different from the one he eventually released, a welcome surprise for any fan! It also includes versions of 'I Could Never Be Ashamed of You', written for his shotgun bride, Billie Jean; an amazing and foreboding version of 'Angel of Death', suggesting that Hank knew full well that he didn't have much time left; and 'Log Train', a song written for Hank's dad, and chronicling his early boyhood in logging camps. How To Write Folk And Western Music To Sell was a booklet published in 1951, and while Hank did not actually write the text, he did lend his name to the project and market it on radio stations across the South. Disc two features a collection of songs Hank sold to other artists during this period (with one example being 'A Tear in My Beer', which Hank gave to Big Bill Lister, but which just sat around in an attic until it was discovered by Lister's son in 1988), and rare radio performances from 1950, including the 'Farmer Jim' show in Jackson, Mississippi and the March of Dimes broadcast. Includes detailed liner notes." 180 gram virgin vinyl.

Title: The Voice & The Guitar Of McKinley Morganfield 1947-1954
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $32.00
Catalog #: DOY 634LP
"'Discovered' by Alan Lomax and his legendary tape recorder while still living in on a Mississippi plantation, Muddy Waters did not become a star until he moved north to Chicago in the early forties, where his flamboyant style and slide-guitar playing would eventually become synonymous with the Chicago blues scene. Waters' first nationwide R&B hit did not come until 1948 with, 'I Feel Like Going Home,' but from there on out he charted regularly with songs like 'Honey Bee', 'Louisiana Blues', 'She Moves Me', and later 'Hoochie Coochie Man' and 'Just Make Love to Me'. His band soon became the most respected (and feared) in the city -- especially by local musicians who would inevitably get blown off the stage by Waters and his musical henchmen, who included the legendary harmonica player Little Walter and Willie 'Hoochie Coochie Man' Dixon (both stars in their own right). These 25 tracks, all made for Chess from 1947-1954, are the ones that made Waters a star and are essential listening by any standard."

Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $32.00
Catalog #: DOY 635LP
"By 1954, the father of Chicago blues, Muddy Waters, had reached the upper echelons of success. Now recording with a band that included harmonica virtuoso Little Walter Jacobs, the legendary Willie Dixon on double bass, and Jimmy Rogers on second guitar (all immense talents in their own right), Waters could do no wrong. In addition to penning much of his own material (including 1955's 'Mannish Boy', a scathing response to Bo Diddley's 'I'm A Man'), Waters enlisted the songwriting talent of Dixon as well, who churned out one soon-to-be blues standard after another (i.e. 'I'm Ready', 'I Love The Life I Live, I Live the Life I Love', 'Young Fashioned Ways', 'Close To You', etc.). During this period Waters ruled the American R&B charts, and in 1958 he was sent to England, where his electrified blues performances had a long lasting impact on the future of British rock as well."

Title: Angola Prisoners' Blues
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 636LP
"In 1959, a young folklorist and musicologist, Harry Oster, traveled to the State Prison in Angola, Louisiana to collect folksongs. He made a number of field recordings while at the prison, but his biggest discovery was undoubtedly the Louisiana Blues Hall of Famer, Robert Pete Williams, a truly gifted musician and blues writer, who was serving a life sentence. Of the 9 songs on this album, four are by Williams, who sings heart-wrenchingly about prison life and being down and out. Thanks to Oster, Williams was eventually released from prison, and was able to have a fairly successful career as a bluesman in the '60s and '70s, appearing at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival and touring the US and Europe. The other musicians featured here, fellow inmates Robert 'Guitar' Welch and Matthew 'Hogman' Maxey, are both extremely gifted musicians, but in the words of Dr. Oster (who would go on to write the Penguin Guide to American Folklore in 2000), 'they are primarily the heirs of a clearly defined and standardized blues tradition, rather than innovators.' In any case, this is acoustic prison blues at its finest, and includes such detailed liner notes as well as an annotated track listing that it is equal parts musical and historical document."

Artist: HOPKINS, LIGHTNIN'
Title: Country Blues
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 637LP
"By the time this LP was recorded in 1959, Lightnin' Hopkins was already a star, but hoping to catch Hopkins in a more informal and relaxed setting, American folklorist Mack McCormick travelled to Texas with just a mono tape recorder. Despite, or perhaps because of, the lack of professional equipment, McCormick manages to capture Hopkins in rare form. The listener has the impression that Hopkins is just hanging out on his front porch with a few friends, playing the blues. It was through his contact with McCormick that Hopkins was presented to rock & roll / blues revival audiences, playing Carnegie Hall with Joan Baez and Pete Seeger in 1960." 180 gram virgin vinyl.

"After years spent traveling and playing music across the South, towards the end of WWII, Hooker, like so many other Delta-born bluesmen, ended up working in the factories of Detroit's booming automotive industry. After a few years spent playing the blues in the back alleys of Motor City and purchasing his first electric guitar, Hooker began rising up through the ranks of the legendary Hastings Street scene. In 1948, the 31-year-old blues guitarist finally got his first big break. With the help of agent Bernie Besman, and L.A.'s Modern Records, Hooker's first single, Boogie Chillen, unexpectedly went to #1 on the R&B charts -- a rare occurrence in the music business, but undoubtedly testimony to his equally rare talent. Artist: HOOKER, JOHN LEE
Title: Folk Blues
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 639LP
"By the time the folk / blues revival of the 1960s rolled around, and hoards of radio-addicted American and British teenagers had begun seeking out the roots of rock & roll, John Lee Hooker had already had numerous hits and his loud and raw electric Delta blues was blaring from radio sets across the nation. Soon every budding rock band from London to San Francisco was naming him as a primary influence and playing (or trying to play) his songs. Thanks to this wide crossover fan base he toured heavily during this period, spreading his foot stomping boogie all over the USA and Europe. The tracks on this particular album, however, is a collection of sides from 1954 (with the exception of 1952's 'Rock House Boogie') when Hooker was still recording in Detroit -- primarily for Modern Records (where Hooker landed his first #1 hit, 'Boogie Chillen', in 1948), but also simultaneously 'moonlighting' for numerous other labels under many different pseudonyms in an attempt to pay the rent. In an era of millionaire musicians it is difficult to imagine how a man with so many number one hits could still be short on cash, but at this time black musicians were often paid next to nothing for their recordings and forced to forfeit their royalties to the record labels. Here Hooker is backed by the great Eddie Kirkland on second guitar -- his constant sideman during this period. Hooker's style was notoriously difficult to play behind, and Kirkland, a brilliant guitarist in his own right, was one of the few who had a good enough ear to keep up with all of the off-tempo changes. This album does not feature any of Hooker's hits, and while that may be a drawback with some lesser artists, when you are dealing with one of the giants of both the blues and, by association, rock & roll, it is actually both refreshing and rewarding to gain exposure to some of his lesser known material." 180 gram virgin vinyl.

Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP

Catalog #: DOY 640LP
"After a few years spent climbing the ranks of the Detroit blues scene, in rolls 1948 and Hooker's 'Boogie Chillen' -- a variation on an 'old lick' he says he heard the guys playing way back when in Mississippi -- goes to the top of the charts. In the years that follow, John Lee Hooker has one hit after another, backed often only by a single sideman, the great Eddie Kirkland (because he was one of the only guys who could keep up with him!). Not in the sense that Hooker played fast or fancy; in fact, Hooker himself once said, 'I don't play a lot of fancy guitar. I don't want to play it. The kind of guitar I want to play is mean, mean licks.' These ten tracks have 'mean licks' a-plenty, and take listeners back to that early period, beginning with his earliest single, 1948's 'Sally Mae' and its B-side, 'Boogie Chillen,' through to 1954's, 'I Need Love So Bad,' the year before Hooker signed to Vee Jay."

Title: Driftin' Thru The Blues
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 641LP
"There was an almost religious quality to the way John Lee Hooker saw himself as a musician: the way a preacher is a vessel for the Word of God, John Lee Hooker was a vessel for the blues. After running away from a life of back-breaking labor in the cotton fields of Mississippi at the age of 14, Hooker drifted from town to town until he ended up in the booming city of Detroit, in the early 1940's. Although Detroit's blues scene was small compared to that of Chicago, it wasn't long until young John Lee from Mississippi was a big man on campus. The five tracks on side A were recorded in Detroit between 1949 and 1950 and feature stereo recordings of mainly solo performances by John Lee Hooker. The five tracks on Side B, also recorded in Detroit, are mono recordings primarily from 1954 and feature Hooker in a band format backed by tenor sax, piano and drums."

Title: Chega De Saudade
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 642LP
"It would probably not be an overstatement to call this the most influential Brazilian album of all time. Originally released in 1959, Chega de Saudade is the album cited as creating bossa nova, so to say that it lit a fire in the music world would be putting it mildly. It would be perhaps more accurate to say that it influenced so many musicians both at home (Caetano Veloso, Jorge Ben, etc.) and abroad (Stan Getz, Herbie Mann, Charlie Byrd) that it effectively single-handedly changed the way people both made and listened to music, and put Brazilian artists on the map. Almost every song on this album has gone on to become a standard, and Gilberto, called 'O Mito,' is today, at age 79, truly a living legend. Here Gilberto collaborates with both Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, both legends in their own right. Moraes and Jobim would soon go on to write the song that won them a Grammy in 1965, 'The Girl From Ipanema.'"

"Willie Dixon was a songwriter / guitarist during the heyday of Chess Records, writing material for such artists as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter and Bo Diddley. His songs not only laid the foundation for the Chicago blues sound, but also helped shape rock and roll as well. Walkin' the Blues is a collection of Dixon songs taken from recordings made in 1951-1956 for Chess and performed with some of the greatest artists of the day: Little Walter, Eddie Boyd, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, to name a few. Dixon, who was also an accomplished singer, can also be heard singing on four of the 18 tracks."

Artist: LENOIR, J.B.
Title: Natural Man
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 644LP
"This LP of original Chess recordings (1951-1955), originally released on the label as 78s, is a 'best of' Delta bluesman J.B. Lenoir's early period. Introduced onto the Chicago blues scene in 1949 by Big Bill Broonzy, Lenoir was soon recording regularly for labels like Job and Chess. By the time his 'Eisenhower Blues' was released for Parrott Records in 1954, Lenoir's beautiful voice and talent for songwriting had made him a big man on campus. The protest song, which criticized President Eisenhower and his tax policy, was fast on its way to becoming a hit when it was unceremoniously yanked from shelves by government censors. However, J.B. was not deterred, and continued his social / political criticism with songs like 'Korea Blues' - and later 'Down In Mississippi' and 'Vietnam Blues'. However, he was not without a sense of humour as well, and wrote songs like 'Don't Touch My Head' about his new process hairdo. Featuring Alex Atkins, alto sax; Ernest Cotton, tenor sax; Joe Montgomery, piano; Willie Dixon, bass; Al Gavin, drums. Baby Face Leroy Foster, guitar; Sunnyland Slim, piano; Alfred Wallace, drums. Lorenzo Smith, tenor sax; Joe Montgomery, piano; Al Gavin, drums." 180 gram vinyl.

Title: The Broomdusters Box
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 3LP BOX/2CD
Price: $60.00
Catalog #: DOY 645LP
"King of the electric slide guitar and one of the most influential blues guitarists / vocalists of all time, Elmore James had his first hit in 1951, with 'Dust My Broom', the opening riff of which is perhaps the single most recognizable in the history of blues. During the early fifties his band was one of the most popular on the Chicago blues scene and throughout the decade James recorded a flurry of sides for many different labels. However, James, like many Chicago bluesmen was originally from Mississippi (b. 1918) and during his early years he played the southern circuit, where he had the chance to meet and play with Robert Johnson, Sonny Boy Williamson and Howlin' Wolf. Unfortunately James died in 1963 at the age of 45, but not before influencing a new generation of rock & roll guitarists (i.e. Jimi Hendrix and Brian Jones to name just a few). Featuring some early sides with Ike Turner on piano, as well as his 'classic' Broomdusters line-up with Johnny Jones on piano and JT Brown on sax for a grand total of 54 tracks recorded from 1952-1960! A definitive retrospective of one of the giants of the blues now on both vinyl and CD versions in one shot!" Includes 2 CDs featuring all the material on the 3 LPs.

Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 646LP
"One of the greatest American folk-blues singers of all time, Josh White (1914-1969) is perhaps the artist most responsible for introducing African American folk and blues to white America. By the time this intimate collection of lesser-known spirituals, prison blues and protest songs was released in 1957 for Elektra, Josh White was just beginning to make a comeback after having his career nearly destroyed by a McCarthy blacklisting. Although White was not a Communist, he was outspoken on issues of Civil Rights. He famously was the first black artist to give a White House Command Performance (1941) and earn a million selling record (with One Meatball in 1944). In 1963 he was ranked America's third most popular folksinger (after Harry Belafonte and Pete Seeger) and performed at Martin Luther King, Jr.'s March On Washington. By his death in 1969 he was the best-known folk-blues musician in America."

Title: Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music Vol. 4
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $32.00
Catalog #: DOY 647LP
Subtitled: Country Music & Bluegrass. "The great lost volume to Harry Smith's legendary Anthology of American Folk Music! Although these songs were compiled at the same time as the original volumes (famously released on Smithsonian Folkways in 1952), Volume 4: Country Music & Bluegrass remained mysteriously unissued for almost 50 years! Like the previous volumes these recordings come mostly from the late '20s and '30s, with the central focus being on old time country and bluegrass music by artists like the Monroe Brothers, the Carter Family, Robert Johnson, Bukka White, Leadbelly, Uncle Dave Macon, Sleepy John Estes and more! The importance of Harry Smith's work cannot be overstated. Not only did he single-handedly save much of American folk music from extinction, but when he handed his record collection over to Smithsonian folkways in 1952, he opened the floodgates for the American folk revival of the following decade and beyond."

We got this too fucking late for Christmas in 2010 and absolutely nobody bought in January 2011 -- nothing more fickle & full of disdain than holiday Elvis buyers, evidently. Here's another chance to get it -- is it in poor taste to even ask? "The initial reaction to the release of this album was unbelievably one of controversy. Irving Berlin was actually horrified that his 'White Christmas' was being sullied by the 'vulgar kid with the gyrating pelvis,' and many others agreed. The year was 1957 and Elvis was still young (just 22) and dangerous, Jailhouse Rock had just hit the box offices and his 'Hound Dog / Don't Be Cruel' single was still at the top of the charts. But despite his status as the ultimate rebel, Elvis actually managed to deliver pretty convincing versions of these Christmas classics, so much so that although Irving Berlin may still be rolling over in his grave, the album itself has taken its place as one of the best known and loved Christmas albums of all time (and definitely a lot cooler than Bing Crosby). Featuring 9 bonus tracks, all recorded in 1957." High quality heavyweight red vinyl.

Artist: BERNSTEIN, ELMER
Title: The Man With The Golden Arm
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 649LP
"Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score, Elmer Bernstein's original soundtrack to Otto Preminger's 1955 film, The Man With The Golden Arm, starring Frank Sinatra, Eleanor Parker and Kim Novak, became the first all-jazz soundtrack to be used in a major Hollywood movie. Bernstein's music was the perfect emotional match for Preminger's heroin-addict/jazz drummer anti-hero (played by Sinatra), and is considered one of the best scores of the era. It is also credited with effectively changing the sound of American cinema by opening the floodgates for jazz music in film and on television. Bernstein himself would go on to score over 200 films, including The Ten Commandments and To Kill A Mockingbird." On 180 gram vinyl.

Artist: HERRMANN, BERNARD
Title: Psycho
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 650LP
"Now, for the first time ever on vinyl, the soundtrack to Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece Psycho, scored by one of the greatest composers to ever grace the silver screen, Bernard Herrmann (Citizen Kane, Taxi Driver, Cape Fear, etc.) Herrmann began writing scores for Alfred Hitchcock in 1955, but the apex of this collaboration came undoubtedly with the scoring of 1960s Psycho, where Herrmann's amazing ability to set the mood has made the soundtrack to Psycho perhaps the most memorable in the history of cinema (who can recall the shower scene without recalling the sound of shrieking violins?). Do not miss your chance to own this classic on vinyl!" On 180 gram vinyl.

Artist: TOUSSAINT, ALLEN
Title: The Wild Sound of New Orleans
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 651LP
"New Orleans native Allen Toussaint is one of the city's greatest living pianists and after over five decades on the city's music scene, he is still going strong! Born in 1938, he got his start playing at one of New Orleans' many night clubs and was soon signed to RCA where, on 29 January 1958 he took to the studio to record this album--with a line-up of local musicians that included two saxophones, guitar, bass and drums (although the names of these musicians is a subject of some debate). In 1963, a remake of the song 'Java' from this album became a huge hit for trumpet player Al Hirt. In fact, in the decades that followed, many of Toussaint's songs ('Working in a Coalmine,' 'Ride Your Pony,' 'Fortune Teller,' 'Mother-In-Law,' etc.) have become R&B standards, and Toussaint himself a living legend of New Orleans R&B." On 180 gram vinyl.

Title: Lord Have Mercy
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 653LP
"Born in Rossville, Tennessee in 1904, Mississippi Fred McDowell is one of the great Delta bluesmen, and by 1971 when his 'You Gotta Move' first appeared on the Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers album, one of its best known. But in 1959 when he was first hunted down at his home in Como, Mississippi by Alan Lomax (and Shirley Collins) he had not yet made a single recording. The first time McDowell's amazing repertoire was ever committed to tape was when Lomax set up his tape recorder on McDowell's front porch and over a period of 4 days from September 21-25, 1959 proceeded to record McDowell singing and playing acoustic guitar, joined at times by guitarist Miles Pratcher and Fannie Davis on comb. Occasional vocals were also provided by McDowell's wife Annie Mae, James Shorty, Sidney Carter and Rose Hemphill. Lord Have Mercy is an excerpt of that historic front porch session." Artist: HOWLIN' WOLF
Title: Moanin' In The Moonlight
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 655LP
"1959's Moanin' in the Moonlight was Howlin' Wolf's first long-playing album for the Chicago-based Chess label. It was a compilation of previously released singles spanning an eight year period (from 1951-1958), beginning with his first single--1951's 'How Many More Years'/'Moanin' At Midnight' -- which immediately shot to the top of the R&B charts, all the way through to 1958's 'Moanin' for My Baby'. During the 1950s, the Wolf had two more top 10 hits, 'Smokestack Lightnin'' (perhaps his single most influential song) and 'I Asked For Water (She Gave Me Gasoline)', also featured here."

Artist: RUSH, OTIS
Title: The Cobra
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 656LP
"'The great Chicago bluesman Willie Dixon knew raw talent when he saw it, and he saw it in the 20-year-old southpaw guitarist from Mississippi, Otis Rush. Thanks to Dixon, Rush was soon cutting singles for the Chicago-based Cobra Records, and in 1956 his first single, 'I Can't Quit You Baby', shot to number six on the R&B charts. Over the next two years Rush released a total of eight singles for Cobra (all produced by Dixon), including masterpieces like 'Double Trouble' (featuring Ike Turner on guitar), 'Keep On Loving Me Baby' and 'All Your Love (I Miss Loving)', inventing Chicago's West Side blues style (along with Magic Sam and Buddy Guy) along the way. These eight singles, collected here, represent one of the most outstanding moments in Chicago blues."

Artist: WILLIAMS, ROBERT PETE
Title: Free Again
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 657LP
"Robert Pete Williams (1914-1980) is the quintessential Delta bluesman. His songs, which tell the tale of his own life's considerable hardships, are performed in the style of the early country blues, with only a fleeting adherence to a twelve-bar form. Much like Lead Belly, Williams was 'discovered' by a music historian (Harry Oster) at Louisiana's infamous Angola prison, where he was serving a life sentence for murder. Williams, again like Lead Belly, managed to 'sing himself to freedom', thanks to Oster's petitioning for his release. While still incarcerated, his first recordings appeared on the Folk Lyric label in the form of Angola Prisoners' Blues, but by the time Free Again (as the title suggests) was released in 1961 he had been paroled to a work farm. Although the farm was better than prison, the 80-hour work week left precious little time for music. Amazingly he did manage to record and perform occasionally and Free Again, a collection of gripping solo guitar and vocal performances recorded by Oster himself in Baton Rouge on November 14, 1960, is a shining example of this."

Artist: SPENCE, JOSEPH
Title: Music Of The Bahamas: Bahaman Folk Guitar
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 658LP
"Music historian Sam Charters first recorded the legendary Bahamian guitarist Joseph Spence on Andros Island in July 1958 for Folkways Records. Charters was so enthusiastic about Spence's playing that the LP, released in 1959, became one of the label's first to be dedicated entirely to a single artist from outside the US. This reissue, long out of print on vinyl, includes three bonus tracks that originally appeared on a 1964 Folkways split LP featuring Spence and two other Bahamian musicians, John Roberts and Frederick McQueen."

Title: The Amazing Grace
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 659LP
"Recorded in an Atlanta hotel room in 1940 by John Lomax on one of his last trips to the South on behalf of the Library of Congress. The story goes that Willie McTell (age 42) was spotted by Lomax playing for tips in the parking lot of the Pig 'n Whistle BBQ. Lomax pulled into the parking lot and offered McTell one dollar plus cab fare to meet him at his hotel room for an impromptu recording session the next morning. Despite the meager compensation, McTell agreed and the historic session took place. That morning in November McTell recorded fourteen tracks, including five folk ballads that he had never recorded before. He also shared the story of his life and his considerable knowledge of American music, while speaking out on racism as well. These historic monologues are also included here."

Artist: VAN RONK, DAVE
Title: Sings Ballads, Blues & A Spiritual
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOY 660LP
"'Not infrequently I am taken to task for the manner in which I approach my material,' folk singer and guitar player Dave Van Ronk (1936-2002) wrote in the liner notes to Ballads, Blues, and a Spiritual. A white New Yorker singing traditional Southern black songs, he distinguished himself from others who adopted this repertoire by imitating the way he heard black musicians perform. 'Although I can appreciate the 'white approach' to Negro folksongs and enjoy the work of many of its adherents, I still reserve the right to sing these songs in the style to which I am accustomed, partly because of habit, and partly, I confess, because I feel that my way is the 'right way'.' Originally released in 1959 on Folkways, this release was Van Ronk's first record. It contains the tracks 'If You Leave Me Pretty Momma,' 'Backwater Blues,' 'K.C. Moan,' 'How Long,' and 'John Henry'. Liner notes include photos, lyrics, song histories, and an introduction by Van Ronk."

"Born in Brooklyn in 1936, Dave Van Ronk was Bob Dylan's 'first New York guru,' writes Dylan's biographer Robert Shelton. 'Dave Van Ronk was the musical mayor of MacDougal Street,' Shelton continues, 'and... a walking museum of the blues.' Originally released on Folkways in 1961, this album features fifteen songs, including a parody of 'Nearer My God to Thee': 'Georgie and the IRT.' Liner notes include song lyrics and song histories."

Artist: HENRY & PIERRE SCHAEFFER, PIERRE
Title: Symphonie Pour Un Homme Seul/Concerto Des Ambiguites
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: DOZ 401LP
On 180 gram vinyl. "Electronic / avant-garde music pioneer and founder of the French musique concrète movement, Pierre Schaeffer, a radio engineer, believed that any sound could be music, and was one of the first to experiment with tape looping, splicing and sampling. He was also one of the first to record music on magnetic tape. Drawing inspiration from the Italian Futurists, he emphasized the double meaning of the word 'play', meaning to play an instrument, but also to have fun and enjoy oneself. Pierre Henry, a classically trained musician, was one of Schaeffer's disciples and together they co-wrote the revolutionary Symphonie pour un Homme Seul, recorded in 1950. Despite its title, it is not a symphony in the classical sense, but a kind of suite divided into 12 movements. It is a musical collage featuring vocal fragments, that are at times recorded backwards, accelerated or repeated, and other sounds like whistles, footsteps, doors slamming, metallic sounds, and a prepared piano. However, what is important about this piece is not merely its intrinsic musical value, but its influence on so many future generations of musicians in so many genres. Symphonie pour un Homme Seul, over half a century later, remains a pioneering experiment in the search for new aural horizons. The Concerto side reveals Henry's personal approach to dissonance, with a strong impact of illogical sequences in the piano 'duel': the two instruments seem to collide in a furious rejection of the traditional idea of music, generating a clash of noises that reproduces the sonic pollution of the modern times."

Artist: HENRY, PIERRE
Title: Le Microphone Bien Tempéré
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: DOZ 402LP
On 180 gram vinyl. "Electronic music pioneer, Pierre Henry, was a classically trained French pianist and percussionist, but gained notoriety as one of the driving forces behind the French avante-garde movement 'musique concrète', which attempted make music by using 'real' sounds, like trains on tracks, dogs barking, footsteps, etc., in place of actual instruments and then electronically manipulate them in ways that had never been seen before, effectively redefining the very idea of music itself, and forcing listeners to ask themselves the question, 'what is music?'. Many did, and the many answers to this question went on to inspire scores of artists and musicians, and the ripple effect is still being felt today. The idea that any naturally occurring sound could be music was, to say the least, a new concept at the time, and so it helped that the movement had the backing of someone who, like Henry, was a classically trained, or 'serious'musician, as movement founder Pierre Schaeffer would have defined him. This piece, Le Microphone bien Tempéré, written by Henry in 1951, was the first attempt at notated musique concrete."

Artist: HENRY, PIERRE
Title: Le Voile d'Orphée
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOZ 403LP
"Pierre Henry's 1953 'Veil of Orpheus' is the first example of symphonic musique concrete, the use of non-traditional sources and 'real' sounds like trains, dogs barking, footsteps, etc., in place of actual instruments and then electronically manipulating these sounds in new ways. It was originally composed for the opera Orpheus 53, which was written with movement founder Pierre Schaeffer for the Donauescliingen Festival. Despite the quantum leaps made in the field of electronics over the past 50 years, this initial experiment still manages to convey its original importance. The piece uses 'concrete sounds' much in the same way a traditional orchestra would use individual instruments. Besides two versions of 'Veil of Orpheus' (the original 27-minute version and the second 15-minute version used in the Maurice Bejart-Pierre Henry ballet Orpheus in 1958), there are two shorter pieces -- 'Entity' and 'Spiral' -- which evoke an unsettling search for meaning that is so often associated with Henry's work."

Artist: HENRY, PIERRE
Title: Musique Sans Titre/Spatiodynamisme
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOZ 404LP
"Musique Sans Titre, composed in 1951 at the Studio d'essai of the RTF, was one of Henry's earliest attempts at musique concrète. Spatiodynamisme, on the other hand, was based on the 1954 recordings of a Nicolas Schöffer sound sculpture. Metallic parts, mirrors, lights and sounds emanating from a 50-meter building interacted with the environment and visitors. Henry recorded various grating and scraping sounds from the metallic sculpture and then manipulated them for this piece, which was influenced by Italian Futurist Luigi Russolo's L'Arte Dei Rumori."

Artist: HENRY, PIERRE
Title: Haut-Voltage/Coexistence
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOZ 405LP
"The 22-minute 'Haut-Voltage' is a product of Henry's collaboration with French choreographer Maurice Béjart, recorded in 1956 for one of Bejart's stage productions, and featuring the vocals of Henry himself. By 1958, Henry had left Pierre Schaeffer's RTF and had begun working in his own private studio. 'Coexistence,' recorded in 1959, comes from this new period, when Henry had begun to realize that in order for musique concrète to evolve, it would have to begin to use electronics. 'Coexistence' is one of Henry's first attempts at bringing the two together."

Artist: CAGE/DAVID TUDOR, JOHN
Title: Indeterminacy
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $32.00
Catalog #: DOZ 406LP
Subtitled: New Aspect Of Form In Instrumental And Electronic Music. "Originally issued as in 1959 on Smithsonian Folkways, the initial idea for Indeterminacy came from avant-garde pianist, David Tudor, who suggested that John Cage give a lecture that was simply the telling of stories. Cage did this in Brussels in September 1958. For this lecture Cage simply stood in front of an audience and told 30 stories without musical accompaniment. Upon returning to the States in 1959, Cage decided to record the stories, but this time with the musical accompaniment of David Tudor. For the recording the two men were placed in different studios where they could not hear each other, while Tudor performed portions of Cage's 'Concert for Piano and Orchestra' (1957-58) along with pre-recorded selections of Cage's Fontana Mix' (Milan, 1958), and Cage simultaneously told 90 one-minute stories (sped up or slowed down according to the story's length). In a career that spanned over half a century, this album is considered to be one of Cage's best. It has never been reissued on LP until now. Includes liner notes by John Cage." Gatefold sleeve.

Artist: CAGE, JOHN
Title: The 25-Year Retrospective Concert Of The Music Of John Cage
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $32.00
Catalog #: DOZ 407LP
"Recorded live at Town Hall, NYC in May of 1958, this historic concert (organized by Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg) was a retrospective of Cage's work from 1934 to the present. Here Cage's interest in technology, Eastern philosophies, and the concept of 'silence' and 'chance' as related to composition come to the fore as he plays some of his most significant and controversial pieces of his career, several of which ('Six Short Inventions for Seven Instruments', 'She Is Asleep', 'Music for Carillon', and 'Concerto for Piano and Orchestra' [in which Merce Cunningham took the part of the conductor - the 'living clock' - and David Tudor that of the pianist]), were performed here for the first time ever. This concert created quite a stir for its time, with many journalists and audience members loudly complaining 'this isn't music'! Includes booklet with comments by Cage himself."

Artist: STOCKHAUSEN, KARLHEINZ
Title: Mantra
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $32.00
Catalog #: DOZ 408LP
"Composed in 1970, Stockhausen's Mantra is a duet for piano written for the Donaueschingen Festival. It is Stockhausen's first completely scored piece after a long string of largely improvised compositions. Here both pianists play ring-modulated pianos, cymbals, and a wood block. One player is also controlling a recording of Morse code. The purpose of this composition was to explore the idea of a musical 'mantra.' The repetition of sounds are intended to place both the audience and the musicians themselves into an altered state of consciousness, thus changing the concert performance into an interactive event where the composer and listener are equals." Limited, numbered edition of 500 copies on 180 gram vinyl.

Artist: CARDEW, CORNELIUS
Title: We Sing For The Future & Thalmann Variations
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOZ 409LP
"Recorded in 2002 by American contemporary composer and pianist, Frederic Rzewski, We Sing For The Future & Thalmann Variations are two compositions from English composer Cornelius Cardew's Marxist-influenced 'People's Liberation Music' period. Rzewski came to prominence in the mid-sixties in Rome as a founding member of the MEV (Musica Elettronica Viva) improvisation group (along with Alvin Curran and Richard Teitelbaum), which shared a vision with groups like Cornelius Cardew's Scratch Orchestra of the same period. However, like Cardew, in the 1970s Rzewski also became interested in Communism and the power of music to express the will of the people, so it is fitting that Rzewski should chose to revisit these two compositions. 1974's 'Thalmann Variations' was written to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the death of Ernst Thalmann, the Secretary General of the German Communist Party, and is based on a popular German Worker's Movement song (1934's 'Thalmann Song'), while 'We Sing For the Future' is a solo piano piece meant to convey the struggle of young people in an imperialist world. It was written in 1981, the year Cardew - who by this time was an active member of the Communist Party - was mysteriously killed in a hit and run accident in London."

Artist: STOCKHAUSEN, KARLHEINZ
Title: Kontakte
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOZ 414LP
"Kontakte (1959-60), Stockhausen's first piece to use both electronics and traditional instruments together, marks a turning point in his career, when his music was beginning to show the influences of American avant-garde jazz and composers like John Cage. In Kontakte live musicians play alongside a tape recording of percussion sounds that have been altered by different electronic devices (i.e. a ring modulator or a reverberator). Stockhausen wanted the musicians to improvise over the prepared tape, but the musicians were at such a loss that Stockhausen eventually had to score the instrumental parts as well." Performed by Christoph Caskel, David Tudor, Gottfried Michael Koenig and Stockhausen in Köln, 1960.

Artist: STOCKHAUSEN, KARLHEINZ
Title: Studie I & II/Gesang Der Jünglinge
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOZ 415LP
Studie I (1953), Studie II (1954), Gesang Der Jünglinge (1956) and Zyklus für zwei Schlagzeugern (1960). Performed by David Tudor, Christoph Caskel, Gottfried Michael Koenig and Stockhausen. "A collection of Stockhausen' s most important works from the 1950s, particularly Gesang der Junglinge ('Song of the Youths') 1955-56, probably the most iconic piece of electronic music ever written. Only because of Stockhausen's complete understanding of electronic equipment, along with his creative genius, was he able to produce this masterwork, the first piece of music to unify vocals and electronics."

Until 1992 this piece was believed to have been lost. The LP also includes the celebrated Zeitmass (1955), and Klavierstück XI, parts I-IV (1956), both of which helped to cement Stockhausen's role as one of the leading German composers of the 20th century." Artist: VARESE, EDGAR
Title: Early Works
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOZ 417LP
"The French-born Edgar Varese (1883-1965), believed music to be both an art and a science. His pioneering use of electronic instruments like the theremin, along with his theory of 'organized sound' has earned him the impressive title of 'Father of Electronic Music'. Varese spent the early twenties as a starving composer in NYC, writing works like the percussionless Octandre and Integrales, his first piece to use the term 'spatial music'. Upon returning to Paris in 1928, he composed the celebrated Ionisation, the first piece ever written for an entirely percussion ensemble (thirteen percussionists and forty instruments). His 1936 piece, Density 21.5, written for solo flute for the premiere of George Barrere's new platinum flute, is one of the great masterpieces for unaccompanied flute. It is also one of the only compositions written by Varese during this decade. His next major work, Deserts, was in fact not written until 1950. It was the first piece ever written for magnetic tape and orchestra and was meant to be the soundtrack to a film which would juxtapose images of actual deserts with images from past wars (the great 'deserts' of civilization)." Featured works: Integrales, Octandre (performed by New York Wind Ensemble, Juilliard Percussion Orchestra); Ionisation (Juilliard Percussion Orchestra); Density 21.5 (Rene Le Roy); Interpolation I, II, III (Varese).
