A mid-price re-release of UK-based Ruts DC's definitive punk/reggae fusion record Rhythm Collision Vol. 1. This version is further enhanced with five 12" bonus and vocal remixes. Originally released in 1982 on the band's own Bohemian Records, this album was immensely influential in UK punk/reggae circles, and was subsequently re-released on the New York 'ROIR' label. Mad Professor's memorable mixes helped the LP to gain some cult status. Meeting at a record store, indulging in their mutual love of funk grooves, as well as playing in the pub rock band Hit & Run, the line-up fluctuated in the early days before settling with Paul Fox on guitar, Dave Ruffy on drums, John Segs on bass and Malcolm Owen on vocals. Attracting the attention of the Southall music collective People Unite, they recorded their classic single "In a Rut" and rollercoasted to pop stardom, signing to Virgin Records, scoring three Top 30 hits, recording the classic The Crack LP, as well as some special John Peel sessions. They were one of the most powerful live bands and always maintained their credibility where others fell for rock 'n' roll glamour. After touring Europe and the U.S., the band were exhausted and, devastatingly for all concerned, Malcolm Owen was dead. The three carried on the band, appending DC to their name, and redirected their music. They released an initial Ruts DC LP Animal Now but were less than happy with the results. Reggae had always been a major part of the Ruts sound, and they chose to develop that and remove themselves and their music from the mainstream glare. They sought out the up-and-coming star of UK reggae production Neil "The Mad Professor" Fraser who had recently set up his Ariwa studio and Rhythm Collision was the first major project recorded in it. This is funk-fueled reggae swaddled in dub, and daubed all over with loud, brash and catchy punk.

Sista Gracy, who originally hails from St. Mary, Jamaica, and moved to Germany in 1985, created a stir when at the 2005 German Reggae Awards in Hamburg she won the reggae queen title -- together with Zoe and Lilian Gold, ahead of a whole host of young up-and-coming reggae stars. Sista Gracy was born to music, and in the '60s and '70s her mother and father made a living by touring around the villages on Jamaica's north coast with their sound system. Sista Gracy is right at home with all the different music styles of the Caribbean, but has a particular affinity for reggae. She effortlessly switches between singing, singjaying and deejaying, and from roots to dancehall. Her lyrics are conscious, she sings about love, the injustices of life, her belief in the greatness of Jah -- but she also sings about the many beautiful, colorful things in this world. Reggae has always been a very male-dominated business, with women usually limited to sex-symbol and background singer status. Sista Gracy's musical background stands in stark contrast to this: a talented percussionist, together with her husband, a bassist, she played in the backing band Herbman Band before becoming the front woman in the '90s. They released several albums and 12"s before Sista Gracy with Ragga Fränkie and the Herbman Band set off on an extended German tour. In 1994, Sista Gracy was invited to perform at the world-famous and highly prestigious Reggae Sunsplash Festival in Jamaica, making the Herbman Band the very first German band to play to Jamaica's discerning festival audience. After a prolonged family break from the music business, Sista Gracy started recording the new album Yardy in 2005. The name "Yardy" expresses her strong bond with family and traditions, all of which is very strongly reflected in the spirit of the new album. In addition to collaborations with Gentleman, Sugar Minott, Dr. Ring Ding, Ragga Fränkie and Mephisto, the new album is split into three parts, (dancehall, roots and dub) and features a complete Sista Gracy showcase and neatly covers all the relevant sub-genres for reggae lovers. Germany's Sam Ragga Band was founded in 1996 by Jan Eißfeldt (aka Jan Delay) and musicians from the Absolute Beginner backing band. Introducing DubXanne: a group of Hamburg-based musicians devoted to bringing out the original dub roots from the biggest band in '70s-'80s Britain, The Police. At the apex of their career, The Police were a massive, bleached-blond juggernaut, surfing a new wave sound which valued intellectual cool and lightly sprinkled ethnic influences over the discredited rock 'n' roll bluster of old. The first post-punk supergroup. At the end of 1977, over the Christmas period, Stewart Copeland played Sting some of his reggae records. When Summers returned to Britain from his vacation in the United States, he found his bandmates newly inspired by Jamaican sounds. Reggae rhythms finally shook The Police free from post-punk rock convention and the rest has become history -- to date, 40 million people all over the world have bought a Police record! The first recordings for Police In Dub sessions by DubXanne started in September 2006. After exhaustive scrutiny of the Police back catalog at EMI Music Publishing (which controls and manages the rights for Sting's songs) and lengthy negotiations with Sting's management team, final consent for the project was granted in March 2008. Now the world can sit back and look forward to dub versions of the biggest tunes by The Police. Although there is no doubt that dub originates from the small Caribbean island of Jamaica, there are many different versions about the exact moment of its invention. Echo Beach has put together this compilation in an attempt at tracing the historical line from dub to disco and pop, and back again. This circuitous journey may have started with producer Lee "Scratch" Perry, who was dozing off at the beach, and a coconut fell from a tree, hitting him directly on the head. Perhaps this created an astonishing echo in his skull that distorted the received frequencies to a highly psychedelic effect. Why not start with dubifying Terence Trent D'Arby, a multi-instrumentalist and gifted singer who had some insights in dub science? Or perhaps dub originated with François Kevorkian, who mixed with echo, delay, phasers and filters, all for the benefit of dancefloor bliss. Or perhaps the world really first heard dub with Grace Jones' dub version of "She's Lost Control," based on an original composition by a band whose sonic signature writer Simon Reynolds regarded as the whitest sound possible: Manchester's Joy Division, who, after the tragic death of their singer, later became New Order. Mick Hucknall was present at the legendary Sex Pistols gig in Manchester where we also find the later members of Joy Division, with On-U-Sound's Adrian Sherwood -- who both produced the dub version of Simply Red's "Picture Book In Dub." Hucknall creates a dialogue between voice and harmonics by punching them in and out of the track in turn while majestic horns hover over the ballad-like riddim. But maybe it all started with Will Powers, where his treatment of hi-hats and crash-ash-ash-ash-cymbals are reminiscent of King Tubby's, as they fade away into space echo. Or maybe Talking Heads started it all: "Once In A Lifetime" is based on an edgy Afro beat and melts down to a hellish cocktail of potent sensimilla, tranquilizers and crystal meth. This riddim is a challenge to the daring dubmeister, but here it is, once again, the glorious original. Meanwhile in England, in the steel town of Sheffield, soon to be the birthplace of Warp records, Cabaret Voltaire was founded in 1973. The negative side of rock 'n' roll, which, by the mid-'80s, led them to dub. Even mod Paul Weller made contact with state-of-the-art dub on the B-side of Hung Up. A razor sharp guitar riff, a blessed bass line and the radical use of high-pitched mini-Moog propelled "Kosmos" to many DJs' favorite "last track" -- the dub to end all other tunes. Boozoo Bajou reaches backwards through time and hands a digital umbrella to Tony Joe White's soulful "Rainy Night In Georgia," and even Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan gets a dubbed remix from Bristol's Massive Attack. Other dub-defiers in this collection include Manu Chao, Dennis Bovell, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Stereo MCs, Brian Eno & David Byrne, and Jam. The archive is growing, version after version, with revamps, bootlegs, remixes, mash-ups, re-edits and copyright-defying white labels from dubstep to Baltimore -- the ensuing chapters of dub are already being written.

This is the third album by space cowboys Dub Spencer & Trance Hill for the Echo Beach label and it sees the four Swiss musicians herding together a pack of very strange steeds indeed. The strange horses come from famous stables (Falco, The Clash, Genesis, Deep Purple, The Catch, M, Tullio De Piscopo, Grauzone, etc.) and have notched up umpteen top-ten hits over the past three decades, albeit in disciplines that have about as much in common with dub as the forlorn pink rocking horse has with the dust-dry desert. Humor dominates the choice of tracks: monumental pop classics, schmaltzy rock-ballads and grimy hits -- the stuff that teenage dreams were made of. The tracklist is heavy on school-party classics and cult hits, all lathered-up and shaved in the best dub style! The aim was to keep the vocals as authentic as possible, and so the band did the obvious thing and contacted the copyright holders: their version of the 1984 British chart hit "25 Years" by The Catch features the original vocals by John Savannah. The soul reggae classic "When I Fall In Love" brings in the master and composer himself, Ken Boothe, and for the new wave hits "Echo Beach" and "Pop Muzik," Martha Johnson from Toronto and Robin Scott from London re-recorded their vocals. Naturally, it wouldn't be the same without dub-master Lee "Scratch" Perry, whose inimitable voice crowns a version of his own manifest "Blackboard Jungle." More local vocal power comes courtesy of William White, one of the most soulful voices in Switzerland; he sings the classic Deep Purple track "Smoke On The Water." The album also contains their version of Falco's scandalous "Jeanny." Umberto Echo is a (music) author, professor, expert in (sound) hermeneutics and multi-instrumentalist from Munich. After collaborating as producer, engineer and musician on over 80 albums, ranging from rock to classical & jazz through to reggae; writing Bavarian reggae history along the way with Jahcoustix, Jamaram and Headcornerstone, and producing for a swathe of international reggae vocalists, including Junior Kelly, Luciano and Luton Fyah, Professor Echo finally revealed his true identity by getting on the Dub Train -- his debut album as sound scientist of the digital echo chambers and analog loops. The successor is Dub The World, featuring 15 versions of dub, roots and dancehall tunes from 13 countries, showing him as a sound manipulator whose virtuoso control of mixing desk, software and outboards is equaled only by his mastery of keyboards, guitar, bass and percussion. Echo Beach pays tribute to the 30th anniversary of M's (aka Robin Scott) "Pop Musik" -- offering 12 new versions/remixes of this classic 1979 tune. Scott's recording career encompasses four decades. Rubbing elbows in his early years with Malcolm MacLaren and Vivienne Westwood, after leaving art school in Croydon, UK, he displayed a talent for writing topical songs which he performed on radio and TV. This led to the first Robin Scott LP, titled Woman From The Warm Grass, which was released on the small independent label, Head Records. Scott was backed on the album by the legendary Mighty Baby, but the record went unrecognized, as Head Records very quickly folded. Scott worked as a troubadour, singing his own songs and accompanying himself on guitar, and he spent a period playing folk clubs as a solo artist, sharing bills with such emergent artists as David Bowie, John Martin and Ralph McTell. In the early '70s he conceived a multimedia project, "The Voice" which was aired on BBC Radio 3 but his restlessness then led him to travel both in Europe and North America, and when he returned, he made demos with members of prog-rock Camel. Around 1973, he performed in bands with the likes of Pete Thomas (later of Elvis Costello and The Attractions) and Paul "Bassman" Riley, and then started working with Roogalator, a well-regarded and original R&B band, producing their debut single "Cincinnati Fatback." In 1978, Scott worked as producer for Barclay Records in Paris where he lived with his partner Brigitte Vinchon (aka Brigit Novik) after producing and filming (with celebrated director Julian Temple) all-female punk quartet, The Slits. Scott also recorded the Cry Myself To Sleep EP under the alias of Comic Romance and released the debut LP by Adam And The Ants, Dirk Wears White Sox on his own Do It Records in 1979. Established now as "M," he also produced and recorded "Pop Muzik," which was written as a resume of 25 years of pop music since 1954. Among other musicians who played on the track was his brother, Julian Scott on bass, keyboard virtuoso Wally Badarou, Canadian programmer John Lewis and Brigit Novik -- the "backing" vocalist who put the "pop" in the "muzik." The song became a huge international hit, and emblemized the angular, synth-driven, MTV-glossed sheen of '80s music pop culture. This 30th anniversary release sees this classic remixed by Paralyzer, Devo, Stefan Obermaier, Internationally Trained Bunnies, Todd Terje, Salz, Stachy, Karl Moestl, Dub Spencer & Trance Hill, Frost & Wagner, Riddim Wize, and Torpedo Boys.

The story of the UK's The Ruts (and the follow-up band Ruts DC) and the legendary dub set Rhythm Collision Vol. 1, is a story that brings together musical opposition and resistance. Here it is now recast in a series of modern remixes by RSD aka Rob Smith, Salz, Steve Dub, Dreadzone, Go Home Production, Boz Boorer, and Ruts DC themselves. British youth of the '80s, and most notably young men of the working class, had an ongoing relationship with Jamaican music and its exports of Caribbean music, such as calypso, mento, ska, and later rocksteady, reggae and dub. Racial tensions of the time in addition to Britain's own dissatisfaction with their leadership helped fueled the "Rock Against Racism" movement, and key members of this movement were Malcolm Owen and his band The Ruts. When Owen joined his mates of the disbanding pub rock gang Hit & Run in 1977 to form The Ruts, their obvious sound outfit was nasty, pub rock-ish punk. But the current Jamaican sound called reggae was also buried deep in the group's DNA. They produced their first single on their own label People Unite, and In A Rut sold an astonishing 20,000 copies. It was followed by a John Peel Session and a deal with Virgin Records that left the band in debt for ages. But it also lead to a seminal album,The Crack (1979), and a bunch of classic singles such as "Staring At The Rudeboys," "Jah War," and the much-covered "Babylon's Burning." In 1980, The Ruts themselves were forced to turn DC when Owen died of a heroin overdose -- DC in this case standing for "Da Capo," a restart. Sadly enough, this second phase of the band keeps being underrated by rock history. However, for those who know, an album called Rhythm Collision Vol. 1 became a major object of worship. This dub set was cut in 1982 in the brand new Ariwa studio, set up and run by a certain Neal Fraser, better known as the Mad Professor. This album's fusion of reggae and punk rock, with a little help of funk, came together in a ying & yang harmony rarely heard before. This selection shows that even over 25 years after its creation, the Ruts DC heritage is still very much alive and kicking, just like the major rocksteady and reggae riddims that kept being used and reused for decades.

Dactah Chando is a surfer guy from Tenerife doing Canary Islands reggae. The artist about his album: "I spent months in the Achinech studio with Toby Nambur and between the two of us we wrote all of the songs. After a short period of getting used to each other, we were able to work quickly and very creatively. Toby spent his youth here in the Canary Islands and therefore knows their mentality and vibe. He made up some brilliant riddims and I was able to respond very quickly with my voice and my lyrics. We eventually sent everything we had done to Guido Craveiro in Cologne. He took the songs and ideas to a very innovative, international level. Tanya Stephens from Jamaica also featured on the track 'Abusadores,' which I was really happy about. I then recorded the track 'Palante' with Pachango from Six Nation and there will be another feature, although I'm not giving anything away just yet. The album has a fresh, European reggae/dancehall sound to it with a lot of bass, mixed with my singing: Dactah Chando/Canary Island reggae. It's a mixture that didn't exist... until now."

Dub Spencer & Trance Hill, Switzerland's dub heroes have teamed up on this new project with Umberto Echo, one of the most sought-after dub remixers this side of the English Channel. In 2006, Dub Spencer & Trance Hill released their Echo Beach debut Nitro (EB 057CD), a sort of Spaghetti Western in dub with plenty of dynamite. Since then, the Swiss musicians have added three further notches to their list of releases -- Return Of The Supercops (EB 063CD), Riding Strange Horses (EB 071CD) and, most recently, The Clashification Of Dub (EB 081CD/LP) -- as well as several echo-laden cover versions of classic party hits such as "Jeanny" or "Enter Sandman" and canonized songs like "London Calling," earning them kudos all over the country and setting feet tapping. On their last European tour, the dubsters cooperated with the Munich-based mix master Umberto Echo, whose illustrious profile spans several pages. For his debut album Dubtrain, the jazz label Enja (Chet Baker, Abdullah Ibrahim, Rabih Abu-Khalil) set up a special sub-label, Enja19. Last year, Echo Beach released the album Dub The World (EB 074CD), which featured his distinctive, ultra-precise dub take on tunes by Sly & Robbie, Seeed, Damian Marley, Stereo MCs and Gentleman. At their joint club and festival performances, the combination of live band and live mixer turned out to be the proverbial "marriage made in heaven." On the decks, Umberto Echo transformed Dub Spencer & Trance Hill's riddims and melodies into thrilling, transcendental sound collages. The vibe was so good that they decided to hit the studio for a joint session after the tour: founding member Marcel Stalder (bass) and his bandmates Julian Dillier (drums), Philipp Greter (keyboards) and Markus Meier (guitar) met up with Umberto Echo at his studio, plugged in and let rip. And here are the results. It is no exaggeration to say that this meeting of minds is for continental Europe what Scientist Meets Roots Radics was for Jamaica and Massive Attack vs. Mad Professor was for England: an alliance too big to fail.
