Artist: SUZUKI, AKIO
Title: Na-Gi 1997
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: RZ 10005CD
1997 release. A CD of minimalist environmental sounds by this Japanese sound-artist, previously known for his fabulous Soundsphere CD on the Dutch Het Apollohuis label. "This music was recorded in Takano, Tango-cho, the northern-most coast of Kyoto, where I live. The bay surrounded by volcanic rock caves is the place where the mighty sounds of waves of the open sea have their muffled echo. Seawater flows into the hollows in the rock again and again like breathing in and breathing out. Spring water constantly drips in the cave, and now and then the wind from the meadow above the chasm brings the sounds of the crickets...the sound spaces of the coast of Takano. A site of a new encounter with the rhythm of the sounds of the sea."

Artist: MAIDA, CLARA
Title: In Corpore Vili
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: RZ 10017CD
Edition RZ presents a performance of French composer Clara Maïda's work In Corpore Vili. Performers (Studios): Ensemble Resonanz, Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain, Arditti String Quartet, Heather O'Donnel (Elektronisches Studio der Technischen Universität Berlin; Studio für Elektroakustische Musik der Akademie der Künste, Berlin.
"During the first years of my compositional research, my goal was to mark out, in my music, the flux of the psychic energy at work in the unconscious and its underlying structure. At the time, I was going through an analytical process favoring access to this unconscious activity, and my readings in the field of psychoanalysis were helping me in the effort to elaborate a musical thinking likely to account for this psychic complexity, which only appears through unintentional acts and words, or in fantasies and dreams. A whole structural and formal model for a potential music was emerging then, since only the plasticity of the world of sound seemed to be able to suggest this mobility and instability, which endlessly alter the configurations of the components of the unconscious." --Clara Maïda

Artist: D'ANGIOLINI, GIULIANO
Title: Simmetrie Di Ritorno
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: RZ 10020CD
"Giuliano d'Angiolini is a positively unique figure in contemporary music. His profound, well-conceived and stubborn take on music has led him to what he calls "impersonal" music -- music that has fully abandoned the idea of development or form. Through successive states of presentation, which aim to elucidate, d'Angiolini wanted to "leave place in sound so that music could become less voluntary." This led him to favor the surface and present an approach that was by no means superficial: the surface as the immediacy in the propositional content of sound and the present as the very surface of the criterion of time. In his work, musical process and material are but one and are completely laid bare. What we are to hear is non-discursive, deliberately lacking formal organization. We are even free to turn away and come back of our own will -- as if the composer wanted to make positive use of the negative metamorphosis of today's urban listeners, listeners who are constantly assailed with stimuli." --Gérard Pesson

Artist: FELDMAN, MORTON
Title: Morton Feldman
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: RZ 1010CD
1994 release. A beautiful collection primarily made up of Morton Feldman's earliest, shorter piano works from the early '50s, going through the late '70s. A much needed compendium to all the essential documentation of his later, intensely long works. Performances here by Feldman himself, David Tudor, Cornelius Cardew, John Tilbury and others. "In his compositions for piano, which make up a central part of his oeuvre and in which all of his experience is accumulated, it is the play of Feldman's hand whose touch is intended precisely for the 'untouchableness' of sound. The clear character of the 'attack' thus displays the paradox of such playing: it is just as much about concealing the idiosyncrasy of the piano sound, the precise point of attack while, at the same time, the structure and tension of those sounds are formed by the hand." --Stefan Schadler. Includes the following works: "Piano Three Hands" (1957, performed by Feldman & Tilbury); "Intermission 5" (1952, performed by Feldman); "Vertical Thoughts 2" (1963, performed by Janos Negyesy: violin & Cardew: piano), "Extensions 3" (1952, performed by Feldman); "Four Instruments, 1975" (1979); "Intermission 5" (1952, performed by Tudor), "Piano Piece 1956 A" (1956, performed by Tudor); "Piano Piece 1956 B" (1959, performed by Tudor); "Intersection 3" (1953, performed by Tudor); "Instruments 1, 1974" (1975, 24 minute piece performed by Eberhard Blum: flute, Nora Post: oboe, Garrett List: Posaune, Joseph Kubera: celesta, Jan Williams: drums).

Artist: EVANGELISTI, FRANCO
Title: Franco Evangelisti
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: 2CD
Price: $38.50
Catalog #: RZ 1011/2CD
1998 release. The first CD release of works by Evangelisti (1926-1980), the founder of Nuova Consonanza (infamous early '60s Italian avant garde ensemble that included Mario Bertoncini, Roland Kayn, Ennio Morricone, Frederic Rzewski and others). This two disc retrospective features studio audio-footage and lab-experiments, featuring performers Aloys Kontarsky, David Tudor, Eberhard Blüm and the LaSalle Quartet. Spanning the last 40 years, virtually all forms of post-1950 invention are represented here from the pure electronics of "Incontri di fasce sonore, composizione elettronica" (recorded at the WDR, 1957) to the stuttering orchestral developments of "Ordini, strutture variate per sedici strumenti" (composed in 1955, presented here as a 1993 recording by the Ensemble Streumentale de Camera). A key player in the field of pan-stylistic modernalia.

Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: RZ 1014CD
2002 release. Features 6 works, dating from 1961-1990. "For Giacinto Scelsi, music was above all a manifestation of the energy of sound in the making. Since the early 1950's, at the latest, the idea of sound as a cosmic force, rooted in the Indian notion of music, had become fundamental to his thinking -- from then on, tones and sounds were for him phenomena whose 'depth' had yet to be experienced. Rooted in these assumptions as well is Scelsi's belief that he as subject must completely withdraw, surrendering himself to that which endeavors to free itself through him."

Artist: ULLMANN, JAKOB
Title: A Catalogue of Sounds 1995-1997
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: RZ 1017CD
2005 release. Jakob Ullmann's music realizes an infinite variety of gradations in all areas of musical formation. That the music of the "catalogue" is nearly always played very softly leads to the ear noticing the smallest differentiations; the listener is put into a state of constant, acute attentiveness. The musical stream is constantly subjected to small irritations, sometimes its flow quickens, sometimes there are brief splashes like those caused by pebbles thrown into water. Performers: Ensemble Oriol Berlin, M.M. Kasper, S. Renshaw, F. Ritts-Kirby.

Artist: TUDOR, DAVID
Title: Music For Piano
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: 2CD
Price: $38.50
Catalog #: RZ 1018/19CD
2007 release. Crucial compilation of David Tudor's most historic performances of avant-garde and minimalist piano compositions, featuring works by these composers: John Cage, Morton Feldman, Christian Wolff, Sylvano Bussotti. Mostly seminal recordings from the mid-'50s, total date range of 1955-1963. Includes "Music For Piano 21-36," "Variations 1," "Variations II," "Winter Music," "Piece For Four Pianos" (including performance by Feldman). "David Tudor, pianist -- a profession, a vocation, a life. From 1950 until around 1965, David Tudor was the epitome of the pianist who could simply play anything. In fact, David Tudor was no longer a name, but an indication for instrumentation as dozens of pieces were written 'for David Tudor.' As early as 1960, after having conquered all of the challenges posed by serial piano music, Tudor began to differentiate between composers who filled him with life and those who left him cold -- the focus of his repertory became crystallized. The main criterion for his choices were shaped by the part he would play as interpreter in the composition. He distinguished carefully between having a free choice among prefabricated parts -- generally called aleatoric, as for example, Stockhausen's 'Klavierstück XI' (dedicated, as his 'Klavierstücke V-VIII', to Tudor) -- and indeterminate actions. In the first case, they have a tendency to 'put me to sleep,' whereby pieces that are less limiting led him to say, 'I feel that I'm alive in every part of my consciousness.' The program of these CDs portrays these distinctions." --Frank Hilberg

Artist: RIEDL, JOSEF ANTON
Title: Klangregionen 1951-2007
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: 2CD
Price: $38.50
Catalog #: RZ 1020/21CD
Edition RZ presents a 2CD collection of work from German electronic and multimedia composer Josef Anton Riedl. Spanning the diverse breadth of his musical output from 1951-2007, Riedl has left an indelible mark on music history in the Federal Republic of Germany with his many works and cultural activities. A pioneer in early concrète and electronics, Riedl joined Pierre Shaeffer's Groupe de Recherches Musicales from 1953-1955. He worked at various music studios including the NWDR (Northwest German Broadcasting) studio in Cologne, and was the artistic director of the Siemens Studio For Electronic Music from 1959-1966. During the same period he founded the Neue Musik München/Klang-Aktionen concert series, and established the Musik/Film/Dia/Licht-Galerie, which has presented multimedia compositions ("sound/light/scent-games"), audiovisual environments, events, exhibitions ("Paper Music I," "Optische," "Akustische Lautgedichte") and installations at important national and international festivals. This collection samples some of Riedl's most compelling work, including his "Paper Music" and musique concrète experiments.

Artist: GABER, HARLEY
Title: Indra's Net
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: RZ 1022CD
Edition RZ releases works circa 1972-1974 from American composer Harley Gaber. "Both works on this CD form, in a manner of speaking, bookends for another piece of mine, The Winds Rise In The North. The first of the two, 'Sovereign Of The Center,' was my initial attempt at putting a new musical way of thinking into an ensemble rather than solo form. The second, 'The Realm Of Indra's Net,' builds on musical 'discoveries' I made in the course of revising The Winds Rise In The North. It is a hybrid work in as much as it is an 'acoustic-tape piece' (not musique concrète). There are four tracks of solo violin mixed down in different track combinations (the one heard on this CD is a full-track mono version of the work). Both of these pieces reflect a general shift in my musical thinking, which occurred in 1968 with 'Chimyaku' (Japanese for 'barely moving') scored for solo alto flute. It was with that work that I began to compose 'slowed-down' music, like slow-motion images in film, not merely slow music such as that of Feldman." --Harley Gaber, July 2009 Performed by Linda Cummiskey (violin), Steve Reynolds (viola), Barbara Riccardi (violin), and John Dexter (violin).

Artist: WOLFF, CHRISTIAN
Title: Kompositionen 1950-1972
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: 2CD
Price: $38.50
Catalog #: RZ 1023/24CD
"Finally I realized that the kind of sound made in an indeterminate situation includes what could result in no other way; for example, the sound of a player making up his mind, or having to change it. In fact, the indeterminate notation I've used is, as far as I know, the only possible one for the kind of sound I should like. And don't forget, we also like to be surprised ...and the rhythm produced by that situation is like no other rhythm." --Christian Wolff; Most of the pieces collected for this portrait of Christian Wolff document the composer's early activity and were mainly recorded around the time of their composition. Each recording exemplifies the sound gestures from their time. Housed in a digisleeve including a booklet in German and English.

Artist: HEYN, VOLKER
Title: Sirènes
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: RZ 1025CD
Performers: Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, Steffen Tast, Pellegrini-Quartett: Antonio Pellegrini, Thomas Hofer, Fabio Marani and Helmut Menzler. Born in 1938, Volker Heyn is an "outsider," or perhaps an "unloved insider," an avant-gardist when it comes to experimental music, reaching beyond the trends of his generation of "New Simplicity," "Neo-Romanticism," "New Complexity" and so forth. In 1960 he left Europe to spend more than ten years in Australia where he joined a travelling theater company, making ends meet by singing in nightclubs and working the night shift in a metal works. Heyn's music is the mise en scène of an acoustic condition, whose manifold reflections perpetually interlock and shatter, like a box of mirrors. It investigates a process, which in itself is inaccessible and cannot be reproduced on paper. Volker Heyn is not interested in sound per se -- in the positive acoustic gesture -- but, and especially, in the negative form, in the responding tone gesture, in the duplicating of friction and in discontinuous movements. His composition patterns follow the resonance -- the overhang -- that we are able to perceive only by restricting our sensors almost to zero, in order not to succumb to its violence. And this must be enough, more would be too much. Then these remnants of sound will be drained and exhausted right up to the merest subversive unit. This is the soundscape that we are given: an intricate, though ultimately innocent structure of endless macro and micro sounding reactions. Housed in a digisleeve including a booklet in German and English.

Artist: MCGUIRE, JOHN
Title: Works For Instruments
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: 2CD
Price: $38.50
Catalog #: RZ 20003/4CD
Edition RZ presents John McGuire's Works For Instruments. Performers: Ensemble Modern -- Julia Rempe (soprano); Pellegrini-Quartett: Antonio Pellegrini, Thomas Hofer (violin); Fabio Marano (viola); Helmut Menzler (violoncello); musikFabrik: Hermann Kretzschmar, Paulo Alvarez, Irmela Roelcke, Eun-Ju Kim, Ulrich Löffler, Jürgen Kruse (piano), Christine Chapman, Jodie Lawson, Charles Putnam, Rohan Richards (horns), Dirk Rothbrust, Carlos Tarcha (percussion). Each of the compositions of post-minimalist American composer John McGuire describes, in its own way, a multi-dimensional sonic space which the listener can take in from various vantage points and, in so doing, experience the very same sound in different guises.

Artist: VON BIEL, MICHAEL
Title: Jetzt Lieferbar! - Funf Kompositionen
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: RZ 2002CD
2004 release. Michael von Biel's musical production at the beginning of the 1960s was clearly marked by the expansion of the musical material. "Quartet No. 1" (1962) and even more, "Quartet No. 2" (1963) are noise compositions whose expressiveness rests essentially on the discovery of new sonic possibilities and performance techniques. Bowing with excessive pressure, playing behind the bridge, leading the bow in a diagonal direction, hitting the tip of the bow on the body of the instrument -- these are the techniques with which the sound of the strings enters into the realm of noise. Whereas in the first quartet, the areas of musical sound and instrumental noise are still largely set off against one another, in the second quartet, the concept of a music based solely on noise is realized without compromise. Both of the compositions Quartet with Accompaniment for string quartet and cello (1965) and "Jagdstück" ("Hunting Piece") for 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, 2 horns, 2 tenor tubas, contrabass, tape, e-guitars and electronically amplified barbecue grills (1966) are based on the contrast of divergent sound worlds. Before attending the composition courses of Karlheinz Stockhausen in Darmstadt for three years in a row starting in 1961, von Biel studied one year with Morton Feldman in New York where he met David Tudor and John Cage. Earlier than for most European composers, approaches in aesthetic thinking which couldn't have been more different from one another collided in his consciousness, and this occurred at a point in time when their music-historical consequence could not yet be foreseen.

Artist: ULLMANN, JAKOB
Title: Voice, Books And FIRE 3
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: RZ 2005CD
2008 release. Composed by experimental German composer Jakob Ullmann. Phillip Thimm (cello); Ensemble: Ensemble Für Experimentelle Musik 2006; Isabelle Fontius (flute); Leif Bergerhoff (saxophone); Tobias Keck (viola); Susanne Friedrich, Judith Geier-Leisch, Daniela Hornung, Ida Maria Kastner, Anja Kienborn, Annegret Kornmann, Christina Reis, Corinna Schmid (voice). The composer states: "Voice, Books And FIRE is the result of my reflections about the relationships between music and language: language as sound and language as text, the numerous relationships between texts of different cultural and religious traditions, between the work of the human spirit in the present and in the past, and the questions arising from the problem of understanding these different traditions, languages and texts and representing them in a present, which has lost knowledge about substantial parts, even of its own tradition and history." Hisses, hushed whispers and open air drone produce a lonely, compelling tension.

Artist: KOSK, PATRICK
Title: Mondweiß
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: RZ 3005CD
2008 release. This is an assemblage of works by Finnish electroacoustic composer Patrick Kosk. Recordings from the Elektronic Studio at the TU Berlin, the Studio of the Institut International de Musique Electroacoustique de Bourges, and the artist's studio. From 1976-1981, Kosk studied composition at the electronic music studio at Helsinki University. From 1981-1991, he was mainly active as a freelance composer and a sound designer at the experimental studio of the Finnish radio. Since 1978, Kosk has composed electroacoustic music in various forms for theater, performance, dance, radio broadcasting, films and visual arts. The sounds that open a work do not prescribe a determined form for the composer. Every sound is conceivable in different contexts. Indeed, the "logic" of the sound material comes up repeatedly in Kosk's notes on his works, of the "coherence" and "stringency" of musical forms. But this suggests neither the teleological form of redemptive classical provenance, nor is he concerned with the aesthetics of consistency and integrity of the early avant-garde. Instead, Kosk looks for relationships of tension that do not resolve; he creates antitheses that refuse a synthesis. Kosk's logic is one of fragmentation and unpredictability.

Artist: JULIUS, ROLF
Title: (Halb) Schwarz
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: RZ 4001CD
2001 release. (halb) schwarz is the first CD to collect a wide range of Rolf Julius' diverse compositions from several years. The Berlin-based sound, installation, action, and sound artist began experimenting with various forms of contemporary music in the 1970s. (halb) schwarz deals with the world of "small sounds," a term coined by John Cage to designate sounds so subtle that they are usually barely discernible. From the standpoint of a 100% pure Central European aesthetic it's all about weeds, rubbish, noise, hisses, crackles, whines, drones -- all sounds that would be eliminated by tradition-conscious sound engineers, at great technical expenditure.

Artist: RADULESCU, HORATIU
Title: String Quartet No 4, opus 33
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: RZ 4002CD
2001 release. Among contemporary composers, Horatiu Radulescu is one who has something essential to express about the enigma of time: multi-layered lines of events, their structuring, perception and potential for poetic-religious message are -- together with the development of spectral composition -- among his central artistic concerns. "String quartet op. 33" fully demonstrates Radulescu's formal invention and his powerful expressiveness. During the 49 minutes of the work, two macro-forms -- two time-worlds overlap and intersect: that of the central string quartet and that of the eight surrounding quartets. In these surrounding eight quartets, the composer deliberately creates a lively, seemingly unordered series of moments of meditative quietness, of sudden improvised actions and of collective eruptions of primal force. Performed by the Arditti String Quartet.

Artist: LANG, KLAUS

"The ordering isn't rationalist or essential, just simple ordering, such as continuity, one thing behind another." -- Donald Judd). "The work could be immediately grasped in its entirety. All there was to see in objects was their actual presence. Anybody could understand them at first sight." -- Zabalbeascoa and Marcos in Minimal Art.

Title: 20 Jahre Inventionen III
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: RZ 4005CD
2004 release. One string quartet piece, recorded 2002, performed by the Arditti String Quartet at the Inventionen 2002 festival. Powerful, abstract, atmospheric. Sei-Jaku is one way of pronouncing the two characters of the title in Japanese. They stand for "Tarnished" and "Star." The other pronunciation "Sabita Boshi" points to a term of central importance in Japanese aesthetics: "Sabi." Although "Sabi" could be translated as "Tarnished," its meaning is not sufficiently represented by the English word.

Artist: NONO, LUIGI
Title: 20 Jahre Inventionen V
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: RZ 4006CD
2007 release. The live electronics that Luigi Nono worked with for the first time in the early 1980s at the Freiburg Experimental Studio also serves the musical displacement: the music moves away from clear spatial and timbral assignations. Due to electronic processing, the sonic characteristics of both instruments, bass flute and cello, can hardly be recognized. Tones and gestures are lengthened into seeming infinity and move in space. Features the 1960 piece for electronics and tape, Omaggio A Emiolio Vedova, plus Canciones a Guimar (1962-63, for soprano, choir, ensemble; performed by Nova Ensemble) and Quando Stanno Morendo (1982, for Frauenstimmen, flute, cello and live electronics).

Title: Einfalt.Stille.
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: RZ 4007CD
2007 release. Flow. State. Through concentration on listening or concentration on what we are listening to we can enter a state of simplicity of mind which is a state of the highest inner clarity or inner silence. In other words: when concentrating on the flow of music we can reach an inner state: The inner silence which is the simultaneity of stasis and flow. This paradoxical situation poses the question: is the flow of music passing us, is music flowing through us thus evoking this inner stasis or is it not a state at all what we experience: should we not most seriously take into consideration the possibility that it is us who are flowing through the sound?" Interpreters: Bettina Junge (flute), Natalia Pschenitschnikova (voice), Adam Weisman (percussion), Karen Lorenz (viola).

       Questions:

       How endlessly the heavens turn.

And yet the earth remains at rest.

Do the sun and the moon quarrel as to their positions?

Who rules over and orders all these things?

By whom are they in harmony?

Who effortlessly causes and maintains them?

Is there, perhaps, some hidden tension

that prevents them from being other than as they are?

Must the heavenly bodies move as they do, powerless to do otherwise?

Look how the clouds drop the rain!

And how the rain rises again to form the clouds!

Who moves them to this abundance?

Who effortlessly produces the primary orb and stimulates it?

The winds rise in the north and blow to the east and west.

       Others move upward uncertainly.

       Whose breath moves them?

Who effortlessly causes them to blow?

       What is the cause?

Title: Poems 1950 - 2003
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: PIC. DISC
Price: $30.50
Catalog #: RZ 9002LP
2004 release. From Fluxus originator and member of the "Darmstadt Circle" of concrete poetry, Emmett Williams. Features poems written 1950-2003, spoken by Emmett, recorded from 2000-2003. "This tiny sampling of my poetic oeuvre is a very mixed bag, as they say; so much so that I'm inclined to call it a bag of tricks. To confuse matters, some of the poems were meant to be looked at rather than read aloud, and others were intended to be performed with sound effects and slide projections."

Artist: KRIWET, FERDINAND
Title: Hörtexte (Radiotexts)
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: 3LP BOX
Price: $90.00
Catalog #: RZ 9003LP
2007 release. 3 picture discs housed in a deluxe boxset. Ferdinand Kriwet (born in Duesseldorf in 1942) is a multimedia artist and poet who has produced many seminal films and sound works for radio and television, in particular throughout the 1960s and 1970s. His works Apollo Amerika (1969) and Campaign (1973), rank today as outstanding artistic documents of these spectacular events in the history of mankind. Kriwet created the work Apollo Amerika whilst in America at the time of the moon launch, his aim being to compose a work of perception derived from all information he gathered on radio and television about the Apollo 11 launch. He describes these as "Hörtexts, Radio Texts" -- radio pieces composed of noise and sound bite and samples. Kriwet's works are an attempt at communicating an idea of listening to something that constantly surrounds us on short, medium and long wave frequencies. His politically engaged and avant-garde approach was influenced by aesthetic and conceptual currents in Constructivism, New Music, Beat Generation and Pop. Six of Kriwets legendary "Sehtexts" (visual texts) reproduced on six picture disc LP sides combined with six of his legendary Hörspiel works/sound collages originally broadcast on German radio and previously unreleased: Apollo America (1969), Voice of America (1970), Campaign (1973), snapshots of American media at the beginning of the 1970s; Radioball (1975) and Ball (1974), reflecting soccer sports in Germany in the 1970s; and Radio (1983).

Artist: CAGE/TERRY FOX, JOHN
Title: HighFidelity
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $81.00
Catalog #: RZ 9006/7LP
2008 release put out in conjunction with the Marzona Collection exhibition in Berlin. Housed in a gatefold sleeve with a 36-page catalogue. The first LP is John Cage Speaks MUREAU by John Cage, its title assembled from the first syllable of the word "music" and the author's name "Thoreau." Malte Hubrig writes "The performance of Mureau -- its letters, syllables and words read by John Cage in a uniform intonation of the voice -- frees language of its meaning and opens it to sound." The second LP is Terry Fox's Culvert, a performance that took place at the University of Montana in 1977. "The performance lasted 24 hours and was divided into two unequal parts: in the first 3 hours Fox, accompanied by two students, took the rowboat to the middle of the 100-foot long, 6-foot high culvert, where they improvised on the instruments. In the remaining 21 hours, Fox stayed alone in the rowboat running a wooden baton around the rim of a saucepan lid to the point of exhaustion... The mutual dependencies of sound and surroundings -- the space itself is a resonant body -- constitute for Fox the fundamental esthetic concept of the musical sculpture. The sculptural treatment of sound -- which, in its immediacy, dialectically carries the concrete spatial situation over into the dimension of time -- opens a continuous progression in which the acoustic sculpture as a process unfurls."
