Artist: CAGE, JOHN
Title: Concert For Piano And Orchestra Etc.
Label: EMI CLASSICS
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: EMI 2344542CD
Featured works: Credo in Us; Imaginary Landscape No.1; Concert for piano and orchestra; Solo for voice 1 & 2; Rozart Mix; Suite for Toy Piano; Music for Carillon Nos.1, 2 & 3. Performed by Burkhard Wissemann, Michael Dietz, Christoph Keller, Johann Nikolaus Matthes, Hermann Danuser, Bell Imhoff, Doris Sandrock / Ensemble Musica Negativa, Rainer Riehn. "This selection of Cage's music provides a rare opportunity to get to know a range of works that were written between the years 1939-65, which were some of the composer's most productive years. Credo In Us is a ballet score written for Cage's long-time partner and collaborator the choreographer and dancer, Merce Cunningham. Imaginary Landscape is scored for four performers who play a muted piano and cymbal as well as two variable-speed phonographs with amplifiers, Imaginary Landscape No.1 is important for being one of the first examples of electro-acoustic music. Cage's Concert for Piano and Orchestra has no overall score, but all the parts are written out in detail. A performance of the Concert may include all of the instruments, but may also be performed as a solo, duet, trio or any combination of the given instruments, resulting in a change of title (e.g. solo for piano or Concert for piano, voice and 2 violins, in case it is combined with a Solo for Voice.) In this recording two solo voices are used. The Suite for Toy Piano is one of Cage's works for prepared piano and the Music for Carillon bring this collection to a fascinating conclusion."

Artist: PART, ARVO
Title: The Very Best Of Arvo Pärt
Label: EMI CLASSICS
Format: 2CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: EMI 29443CD
"Arvo Pärt will celebrated 75th birthday on September 11, 2010. Pärt was born in Estonia during a short period of independence from its more powerful neighbors. In 1944, Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union; as a result, Pärt spent the greater part of his life struggling against an oppressive Soviet régime. In 1980 he and his family emigrated to Austria, where they took up Austrian citizenship; they returned to Estonia at the beginning of the new century and now live in the capital, Tallinn. While Pärt's early works were influenced by Prokofiev and Shostakovich, the introduction of serialism into his later works brought him into conflict with soviet authorities who banned many of his early works. This affected him deeply and resulted in a period of silent introspection during which he developed a great interest in early music. During the 1970s, Pärt developed the 'Tintinnabuli Style' of music for which he has become most famous. This style of composition has been likened to minimalism due to its common use of slow tempi and repeated notation."

Artist: XENAKIS, IANNIS
Title: Chamber Music

Price: $13.00
Catalog #: EMI 87674CD
Featured works: Atrées, Morsima-Amorsima, Nomos Alpha, ST/4, Akrata. Performed by Instrumental Ensemble of Contemporary Music (Konstantin Simonovich). "The works on these two discs were all written in the 1950s & 60s, at a time when Xenakis was at his most productive. It has to be said that, to the casual listener, this is not easy listening. However, to the more adventurous collector and to those prepared to explore new musical avenues, this set of the music of Xenakis will prove a rare and valuable opportunity."

Artist: SATIE, ERIK
Title: Ballets, Piano Works & Rarities
Label: EMI CLASSICS
Format: 2CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: EMI 907236CD
Performed by Aldo Ciccolini, Mady Mesplé, Gabriel Bacquier, Nicolai Gedda, and Pierre Dervaux. "Erik Satie (1866-1924) was one of music's most unconventional characters. After two unsuccessful periods of study at the Paris Conservatoire he moved to Montmartre, earning a living as a composer and café pianist in an establishment that was frequented by the artistic community. He soon became friends with many of the literary and artistic names of the time including Debussy and Ravel. The first disc in this collection of Satie's works starts with what are his two most popular pieces, here in Debussy's 1897 arrangements for orchestra. There follows two of Satie's best-known ballet scores, Parade and Relâche and the disc ends with the lesser-known Mercure and Messe des pauvres, a curious piece for organ and choir. The second disc is made up of a good selection of songs, including two versions of the quintessentially French song Je te veux, and ends with two short instrumental pieces."
