Artist: HAWKWIND
Title: Doremi Fasol Latito
Label: EMI (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: EMI 30031
Mid-line EMI reissue from 2001 of the third Hawkwind album (originally issued by UA in 1972), with 12-page booklet of liner notes, photos & illustrations. The first Hawkwind album to feature the unbelievably heroic bass playing of Lemmy Kilmister, this is pure classic 70s space thunder, capped off by Lemmy's first composition for the group, "The Watcher" (a freaked out sequel to his Sam Gopel contribution, "You're Alone Now"). As good as it gets. With 4 bonus tracks. "On Doremi, ALL instruments were now wielded as weapons of psychic warfare as the Sonic Assassins commence to break down the bad vibe squad in the most reckless and stupor-fying ways. Doremi Fasol Latido saw their building energies emerge into a single vision, housed in a sleek black and silver chrome sleeve comprised of seven crossfaded tracks that were their heaviest, drug-numbed blur-outs ever...an album that succeeded in blurring all aural distinctions between inner and outer space; the near-constant use of VCS3 and audio generator provide a backdrop for the entire album as twinkling yet forbidding as a nighttime display of stars in the cold dead of night." -- The Seth Man/Head Heritage.

Title: Space Ritual
Label: EMI (UK)
Format: 2CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: EMI 30032
Mid-line EMI reissue from 2001 of the fourth Hawkwind album (originally issued by UA in 1973), with 24-page booklet of liner notes, photos & illustrations. Featuring the Doremi line-up (Brock, Lemmy, Nik Turner, DikMik, Del Dettmar & Simon King), plus the addition of Bob Calvert (on "poet and swazzle"), this was the group's finest moment and possibly rock music's ultimate integration of live sonics into skin-bumping cultural architecture. Perfectly presented here in remastered form with three bonus tracks. "It was all captured on this beautiful, psychic roar-out of a double live set. Culled from recordings made at The Liverpool Empire and The Brixton Sundown in late December, 1972, two tracks were so long they needed to be edited down to a 'mere' 88 minutes! The sheer power of the repetition represented here become mantric walls of sounds, all held together by Dave Brock's sonic mortar guitar and the stunning rhythm section of Lemmy Kilmister on bass and Simon King on stamina-driven drums." -- The Seth Man/Head Heritage.

Artist: TOMORROW
Title: Tomorrow
Label: EMI (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: EMI 4988192
Mid-line reissue of this classic UK flower-psych album from 1968. It includes a high quality digital remaster of the original 11 LP tracks, five bonus tracks from the LP sessions (alternate takes and two new, previously unreleased tracks), three tracks by the pre-Tomorrow Aquarian Age (Twink & Junior, including the stunning "10,000 Words in a Cardboard Box," later revised on Think Pink) and four Keith West solo tracks (including Steve Howe). Tomorrow were: Keith West (vocals), Steve Howe, (guitar, pre-Yes), Junior (bass) and Twink (drums, pre-Pink Fairies). "Tomorrow's only album, a psych-pop classic released a few months too late in early 1968, is here expanded to double length. 'Auntie's Dress Shop,' 'Colonel Brown,' 'Real Life Permanent Dream' remain classic examples of English psych's high-water mark, while 'My White Bicycle' was simply an inexplicable flop. 'Now Your Time Has Come' suggest that Tomorrow could have gone on to greater things if they hadn't fallen apart so soon...a period delight fit to sit in-between The Move and Piper At The Gates of Dawn." -- Mojo.

Title: Greasy Truckers Party
Label: EMI (UK)
Format: 3CD
Price: $33.50
Catalog #: EMI 5032352
"The Greasy Truckers Party, as a double-LP set, was the Great White Whale of many a music lover's collecting efforts in the 1970s and '80s -- always talked of being sighted by others and ever-eluding the best efforts. But here it is, on three very fully-packed CDs, the complete sets of Man, Brinsley Schwarz, and Hawkwind (with Magic Michael & Friends thrown in for good measure), a legendary performance on a legendary night for each band. For those unaware, in the world of British underground rock, the Greasy Truckers Party, as it was billed at the London Roundhouse on February 13, 1972, looms about as large as the Monterey International Pop Festival does in American rock lore; it wasn't the biggest gig ever played by the bands involved, but for reasons of exposure, and resulting word-of-mouth, and the excerpted live album that followed, it came to define what they were capable of, and who they were. Man, who'd shown a lot of promise on their early records leading up to this event, ripped the envelope with the show they put on that night. Hawkwind, who'd enjoyed some recording success and made a big splash at the previous year's Glastonbury Fayre, was boasting a partly new lineup, with a rhythm section comprised of ex-Rocking Vicar Lemmy on bass and Simon King on drums -- they overcame some initial technical problems to do a live set that, despite being abbreviated in earlier releases of this performance, loomed large in their legend for more than a decade. And included in that set on this release is their first-ever performance of 'Silver Machine,' the song that -- with Lemmy shifted to lead vocals a few months later -- would propel the band to the number three spot on the U.K. singles charts. And then there was Brinsley Schwarz, who were in many ways the most improbable act on this bill -- where the other two groups were known for doing extended jams, running as much as 20 minutes at a clip, the Brinsleys did short songs mostly based on American country music and other traditional forms; indeed, their opening number, 'Country Girl,' sounds like a lost outtake from the Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo, and is about as far removed as can be from the heavy electric jams of Man that preceded them, or the space rock extravaganzas of Hawkwind, who followed. Magic Michael, who fills out the last ten minutes of disc two, was a London hippie eccentric who was sort of the UK's answer to David Peel -- a future collaborator with Captain Sensible and Rat Scabies of the Damned, he's an acquired musical taste, but a startling cultural artifact of the time, and as long as his presence didn't keep any music off of the collection, you'll be glad that he's here. The packaging on this set is excellent as well, re-creating poster art and advertising and offering biographical information even on the acts that didn't get to perform (there was a power failure) or whose sets, interrupted by hecklers and fights, proved unusable. One couldn't hope or ask for more, 35 years after the fact." --Bruce Eder, All Music Guide

Artist: BROUGHTON BAND, EDGAR
Title: Sing Brother Sing
Label: EMI (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: EMI 64124CD
New mid-line EMI remaster of this 1970 classic. The group's second album, originally issued by Harvest. The concepts of alcohol consumption, Beefheart emulation, and a dedication to 'the conspiracy' were certainly well-discussed themes in the Broughton Brothers household. If you'd like to pound it out in unison, this will cover your needs quite well. This version features 8 bonus tracks (4 previously unreleased tracks, the rest are 7" versions & alternate takes). "Along with cohorts Hawkwind and the Pink Fairies, the Broughton's were the first of the proto-punks, ploughing their furrow nearly a decade before Messers Lydon and company burst froth onto the 70s music scene. The five albums The Edgar Broughton Band recorded for EMI's 'progressive' label, Harvest, between 1969 and 1973 were full-on sonic attacks that took no prisoners. They also contained some truly thoughtful and beautiful music of great originality." -- from Mark Powell's liner notes.

Artist: HOT CHIP
Title: One Pure Thought
Label: EMI (UK)
Format: 2x12"
Price: $13.50
Catalog #: EMI 748EP
A1. One Pure Thought; B1. Dominik Eulberg Remix; C1. Supermayer Remix; D1. Hot Chip V.I.P. Mix. "The various remixes have been going down really well and picking up plays from Simian Mobile Disco, Laurent Garnier, Prins Thomas, Hernan Catteneo, Unabombers and Sinden, among others. They helped the track hit the top 5 on the Zzub Chart and top 10 in Cool Cuts."

Artist: BROWN, PETE
Title: Living Life Backwards
Label: EMI (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: EMI 38826CD
A compendium of the best of Pete Brown's work for Harvest label, spanning his early career in over six albums. All material from 1969/70, including 7" only tracks. Extensive fold out booklet, including new liner notes; good vault work from the slaves over at EMI. "Pete Brown is one of Britain's most original and enduring musicians and lyricists, with a career that spans over forty years and one that still shows no signs of abating. Best known for his role as lyricist in his songwriting partnership with Jack Bruce, beginning with songs for supergroup Cream, and latterly with Jack on his solo work, Pete has also enjoyed success and a reputation as a performer in his own right. Beginning his career as a professional performance poet in 1960...by the mid-sixties he was a major figure on the British poetry scene. Through his association with The Graham Bond Organisation, Pete Brown was asked to contribute lyrics to music by Ginger Baker's newly formed trio, Cream. With Cream's career taking off in a phenomenal way, Brown's thoughts came to performing music in his own right. Eventually forming The Battered Ornaments, Pete Brown and his band signed to EMI and later the underground imprint Harvest Records, where they released records that were a heady mixture of jazz, blues, rock and avant garde experimentation. Brown also eventually formed another highly innovative, jazz-influenced band Piblokto!"

Artist: TALK TALK
Title: Spirit of Eden
Label: EMI (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: EMI 57129
Midline reissue of this 1988 album, which was the fourth album by this UK group, retrospectively known for giving us the body & soul of Mark Hollis. Starting out in the realm of well dressed Euro synthpop, they took a distinct turn into downward spiral of morbidly self-obsessive song form on this album and the group-killing finale, Laughing Stock. These records achieved whispered underground status in the mid-90s or so, and although I'm sure there was probably somebody else besides Jim O'Rourke who was intuitive enough to stumble across them, I'm not going to guess who that was. The well-loved 1998 self-titled Mark Hollis album on Polydor is a direct descent from the direction opened up here. "Laughing Stock and Spirit of Eden -- those last 2 LPs are definitely spiritual forebearers of some seemingly sui generis music -- Gastr & Scott Walker's Tilt spring to mind -- and are fucking twisted & genius to boot. Cathartic, even." -- Jason Witherspoon

Artist: RAWLS, LOU
Title: I Can't Make It Alone: The Axelrod Years
Label: EMI (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: EMI 64080CD
Compilation of work by vocalist Lou Rawls, issued on the Stateside imprint, from material produced in association with the legendary David Axelrod, 1966-70. "Shows the full range if the work that Lou laid down whilst working with David, from up-tempo stompers such as the title track, 'Love is A Hurting Thing' and 'When She Speaks' through to his wonderful evocations of soul's deeper moments on 'Your Good Thing, It's An Uphill Climb (To the Bottom)' or a wonderful revisitation of 'Bring It On Home To Me'. Just as important to this album is the slew of pop cover versions which were spread across them. The combination of artist, producer and arranger create unique and much loved readings of 'For What It's Worth, You Made Me So Happy', 'Feeling Alright' or 'Season of the Witch'."

Title: In Side Out
Label: EMI (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: EMI 66175CD
2004 digital remaster, originally released by Harvest in 1972. Three bonus tracks (2 b-sides, one prev. unreleased). This was the 4th EBB album. Previous reissue on Repertoire is deleted. "If one casts a furtive glance back at the British rock music scene of the late 1960's, the perceived image of this era is one of peace, love and gentle vibes. A deeper look would reveal that underneath all this veneer, a band existed that were rebellious, anarchic and serious about the social and political injustices of the day. The Edgar Broughton Band was all of these things and more. In 1972, the band released Inside Out, inspired by the extremely original album sleeve design by Hignosis. The front cover of the album was a striking photograph of an ex-Wormwood Scrubs inmate stood by the imposing walls of the prison. A live recording from the extensive Inside Out tour mixed from the original 16-track master tape in 2004 appears as a bonus track on this expanded CD release."

Title: Oora
Label: EMI (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: EMI 66177CD
Originally released in May 1973 on Harvest Records. 1 Bonus Track. This was the 5th EBB album. "Released in an elaborate sleeve designed by artist Barney Bubbles (noted for his work with fellow musical anarchists Hawkwind), the album was perhaps the most sophisticated of all the Edgar Broughton Band's releases for Harvest, notably on the track 'Face From a Window/Pretty/Hi-Jack Boogie/Slow Down'." On this record, guests include:

David Bedford (piano), Madeline Bell (backing vocals).

Artist: CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & HIS MAGIC BAND
Title: Strictly Personal
Label: EMI (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: EMI 29654CD
1994 CD reissue, only issued in the UK, of the 2nd Captain Beefheart album, originally issued by Blue Thumb in 1968. 12 page booklet with extensive liner notes by Mark Paytress. The legendary bridge between Safe As Milk and the opus Trout Mask Replica, Strictly Personal features late 60s-style psychedelic production techniques that tend to confuse the purists, but sound better and better all the time. Legendary and a lot less commonly available than the Virgin/WEA/Buddha Beefheart titles... "Considered by many to be a substandard effort due to the circumstances of its release (producer Bob Krasnow, the owner of Blue Thumb, the label which debuted with this album, remixed the album while Don Van Vliet and crew were off on a European tour, adding extraneous sound effects like heartbeats and excessive use of psychedelic-era clichés like out-of-phase stereo panning and flanging), 1968's Strictly Personal is actually a terrific album, every bit the equal of Safe As Milk and Trout Mask Replica. Opening with 'Ah Feel Like Ahcid,' an a cappella blues workout with its roots in Son House's 'Death Letter,' the brief (barely 35 minutes) album is at the same time simpler and weirder than Safe As Milk had been. Working without another songwriter or arranger for the first time, Captain Beefheart strips his idiosyncratic blues down to the bone, with several of the songs (especially 'Son of Mirror Man/Mere Man') having little in the way of lyrics or chords beyond the most primeval stomp. Krasnow's unfortunate sound effects and phasing do detract from the album at points, but the strength of the performances, especially those of drummer John French, make his efforts little more than superfluous window dressing. Strictly Personal is a fascinating, underrated release." -- Stewart Mason.

Artist: DONOVAN
Title: Mellow Yellow
Label: EMI (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: EMI 73567CD
2005 remaster of Donovans' 2nd album, originally released by Epic Records in 1967. Part 2 of the UK-only series celebrating Donovan's 40th year in music. "...with Donovan's voice richer and more resonant than ever in this new transfer, and the arrangements by John Cameron and John Paul Jones now fully exposed and heard in all the timbres that were present in the studio; this is a sonic delight as well a spellbinding mix of psychedelia, blues, folk, Eastern music, and pop like nothing else that Columbia or any other major label -- except EMI and Capitol with the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper album -- was releasing in 1967. It's been augmented with ten bonus tracks, three previously released ('Epistle to Dippy,' 'Preachin' Love,' 'There Is a Mountain'), but making their debut with truly killer sound so that you can even hear the action on the strings of the acoustic guitar deep in the mix of 'There Is a Mountain,' and six previously unissued demos, solo acoustic, and some works-in-progress, including early incarnations of evolving songs such as 'Good Time' and another attempt at 'Superlungs' where Donovan gets into some surprising pop and garage rock grooves, respectively.' --All Music Guide.

Artist: DONOVAN
Title: The Hurdy Gurdy Man
Label: EMI (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: EMI 73568CD
2005 remaster, originally released by Epic Records in 1968. UK-only reissue, with 7 bonus track, detailed booklet of notes. "A product of several contacts between Donovan and Eastern culture, principally growing out of his discovery of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the album also reflected the product of several infatuations and a highly experimental mindset, and all of it flows forth here in ravishing detail -- the chants, ragas, and drones heard in between the more folk-oriented ballads -- all in high-resolution digital audio, which now makes this album sound like one of the most delightfully spacey and intoxicating releases of its era, and there was no shortage of records shooting for those effects; but heard here the way they were meant to be, these songs now strike a careful balance between substantive, defined ballads, and bolder effect pieces that work more directly on the psyche. It's all not unlike the effect of drugs, and makes this one of the truest products of its era in terms of its effect on the listener.' --All Music Guide. "In terms of musical styles, the album is probably Donovan's most wide-ranging. From the full-on rock to the title track to the ornate pop of 'Jennifer Juniper,' via jazz, calypso and Celtic/eastern fusion."

Artist: DONOVAN
