Artist: ARNALDS, OLAFUR
Title: Eulogy for Evolution
Label: ERASED TAPES (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: ERATP 004CD
This is the debut release by Iceland's Ólafur Arnalds and the first North American release for the London-based cinematic music label Erased Tapes Records. Arnalds has immersed himself completely in the world of delicate symphonic composition in a near-weightless orchestral undertaking. Mixing strings with loops, ambience, electronics and beats, Arnalds combines classical instrumentation with an indie-rock aesthetic that draws comparison to Sigur Rós. Eulogy for Evolution is an evocative, orchestral suite that takes the listener on a journey, representing different periods of life from birth to death through slow-building and hauntingly melodic chamber music. It comes with a free download voucher for the 11-track Erased Tapes Collection I compilation to celebrate the label's 1st anniversary. Ólafur Arnalds and his live string quartet performed at unique venues in the UK, including the oldest custom-built concert hall in Europe, the Holywell Music Room in Oxford, before they continued playing mostly sold-out shows throughout the rest of Europe. Over 500 people came to see Ólafur at the State-X Newforms Festival in Den Haag alongside Aphex Twin, as well as at Iceland Airwaves with Amiina and Jóhann Jóhannsson in Brussels. He is already working on his second full-length record and a string arrangement for Erased Tapes friends, 65daysofstatic.

Title: Chapter One: A Long Way From Home
Label: ERASED TAPES (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: ERATP 006CD
This is the debut release by the UK's The British Expeditionary Force. Releasing four critically-acclaimed albums with Yourcodenameis:milo and a host of other production duties ranging from Enter Shikari to Bloc Party, producer/songwriter Justin Lockey returns with his new project, The British Expeditionary Force and their debut mini-album Chapter One: A Long Way From Home -- part one of a planned 3-part mini-album concept. Lockey's music is supplemented by the vocal talents of Aid Burrows. Using a process not dissimilar to Benjamin Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello's Postal Service, Lockey constructed the music in isolation in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and then sent it on to the Warrington-based Burrows, who supplied lyrics and vocals before sending the music back to Lockey for mixing and Erased Tapes founder Robert Raths for co-production. This meant that neither Justin nor Aid ever met together in the whole recording process. The result is an inspired collection of songs that are representative of the return of progressive, genre-defying music to the British Isles. The British Expeditionary Force sees Lockey and Burrows combine ethereal soundscapes, sonorous guitars, beautifully fragile vocal and vocoder work, Lockey's now-trademark sensitivity to drum sounds and Burrows' inclement lyrics together to form something akin to My Bloody Valentine filtered through the best of Brian Eno with a smattering of the sonic vistas of Sigur Rós. This is the sound of 21st-century northern England. Includes a remix by Rival Consoles.

Artist: FINN.
Title: The Best Low-Priced Heartbreakers You Can Own
Label: ERASED TAPES (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: ERATP 011CD
Finn. is German singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and fashion designer, Patrick Zimmer, who splits his time between Hamburg and London. A conceptualist with the voice of Leonard Cohen on helium, this is his debut U.S. release. The Best Low-Priced Heartbreakers You Can Own shows a surprisingly mature and cohesive collection of haunting and mesmerizing songs as a result from his consequential musical progression. Finn. lived, recorded and produced the album over the course of 7 months in the catacombs of an old 14th century church underneath the streets of St. Pauli. This is an album free of any artificial elements, whose place has been taken by a firework of pompous cymbals, fanfares, strings, trombones and kettle-drums. Based on the idea of a theatrical concept, the underlying classical drama is divided into five acts, which define the constellation of the songs and the structure of the record. However, its content resembles more closely the original form of a Greek tragedy. "I will leave this harbour..." he sings, after he symbolically lets his dead hero ascend to Mount Olympus, and adds: "...but I will carry on." Fragile, dew-drenched sounds -- featuring the high, soft waver of Zimmer's voice -- gently break your heart.

Price: $8.50
Catalog #: ERATP 012EP
This is Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles' take on classical music entitled Helvetica. Instead of X-Box versus Playstation, here West plays classical against dance music. As the last title implies, West added a remix of his debut EP track "Seventeen" to prepare everyone for something more dance-oriented coming up next. "Two words: electro genius." --BBC Radio

Artist: KIASMOS/RIVAL CONSOLES
Title: 65/Milo
Label: ERASED TAPES (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: ERATP 013LP
Ólafur Arnalds' new minimal techno side project with Janus Rasmussen, Kiasmos, shares a split 12" debut with UK-based label colleague Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles. After Icelandic prodigy Arnalds had worked several times as a sound engineer for Rasmussen's main project Bloodgroup, the two musicians discovered their common love for minimal, experimental techno music that blends found sounds with beats and samples. With unusual influences from Impressionists such as Claude Debussy and modern electronic artists such as Autechre, Ryan Lee West created a unique signature sound for Rival Consoles. West's three tracks on 65/Milo are a teaser for his forthcoming album IO -- a clever and complex mix of hard electronic beats with warm and catchy melodies.

Title: Paper Canyon
Label: ERASED TAPES (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: ERATP 014CD
This is the debut full-length release from Greater London/Kent's Codes In The Clouds, the cinematic post-rock pop quintet of Ciaran Morahan, Stephen Peeling, Rob Smith, Jack Major and Joe Power. This group is quickly establishing themselves a firm place within England's vast, growing, instrumental rock scene with their harmonious and blissful sound and woven guitar melodies, liable to explode any minute. If you still can't imagine intense music without vocals, then you will be surprised how easily these boys will make you forget this prejudice. Energetic and charming at once, surprising and unpredictable at all times. Completed under the experienced eye of producer Justin Lockey (Bloc Party, Yourcodenameis:milo, Enter Shikari), and supported by a promotional video by U.S. filmmaker Mike Hedge (Burning Man: As The Dust Settles), Codes In The Clouds have already received critical acclaim on both domestic and international stations for their 2007 double A-side Distant Street Lights/Fractures 12". Rock Sound counts Codes In The Clouds amongst the most promising new discoveries and have hailed them as "Ones To Watch In 2009." The Silent Ballet crowned CITC the new pioneers of instrumental rock: "I'm running out of excuses to explain rather lackluster releases from recent powerhouses as Mono, Explosions In The Sky and Do Make Say Think. If they weren't already wrapped up in their own music, they'd probably know better. Codes In The Clouds does." Rather than the predictable quiet-loud-quiet formula that most instrumental post-rock ensembles adopt, CITC craft songs that not only swell and recede, they also emotively arc in varied, well-orchestrated passages of sound that feel meticulously composed.

Title: IO
Label: ERASED TAPES (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: ERATP 016CD
This is the highly-anticipated debut full-length release by UK-based electro-genius Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles -- a youthful purveyor of intelligent dance music. After releasing four previous EPs on Erased Tapes, he has crafted an electronic record to transcend the discerning and flirt a little with current club culture, while also attempting to humanize and at the same time, emphasize, entirely computerized sounds that defy categorization. Rival Consoles combines a clever and complex mix of hard-hitting beats with catchy acid melodies. Or as he describes it in his own words: "Rival Consoles is a musical project where I take ideas which are cheap and processed, and combine them with rich, unpredictable patterns -- resulting in music which appears commercial yet typically against commercial music at the same time." Earlier EP releases clearly define his progression, from The Decadent EP and the 7" Helvetica, where instead of X-Box vs. Playstation, classical theory meets dance. There is more to this freshly-graduated artist than meets the eye, for those not content with 4/4 beat dancefloor stormers; West is fast establishing himself as both an accomplished sound designer and programmer. Full of blippy arcade sounds, dub echoes, acidic whines, glitched beats, pops, zigzags and clatters, IO is a panoply of sound that is meticulously constructed and purposeful. It will be impossible to keep this off the dancefloor.

Title: Found Songs
Label: ERASED TAPES (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: ERATP 017CD
In April 2009, Iceland's neo-classical export Ólafur Arnalds created the 7-song series Found Songs -- recording a song a day for 7 days and instantly making each track available via Twitter. With artwork contributions from fans via Flickr, this modern release awakens memories of a tradition that seemed lost in the digital age we live in. Born in 1987, Ólafur hails from the suburban Icelandic town, Mosfellsbær, just a few kilometres outside of Reykjavík. He has immersed himself completely in a world of delicate symphonic compositions generating near weightless orchestral pieces. Arnalds explores the crossover from classical to pop by mixing chamber strings and piano with discreet electronics which makes him a perfect fit for cinematic pop label Erased Tapes. This young artist has been steadily gaining recognition worldwide since his 2007 debut Eulogy for Evolution (ERATP 004CD). The 2008 follow-up EP Variations of Static earned Ólafur acclaim from both the contemporary and classical field -- transcending a traditional divide by uniting their ideals. After filling London's world-famous Barbican Hall, fellow Icelanders Sigur Rós invited Ólafur to open some of their European shows, playing to an audience of over 5,000 per night. In anticipation of another full-length release, Ólafur conceived Found Songs as a way to collate several lost-and-found musical sketches and ideas in a "very challenging, but fun" series. The experiment offers its listeners an intimate insight into Ólafur Arnalds' creative world. The songs are different from Arnalds' previous output -- comprised mostly of shorter piano suites and electronics-embellished, string-led ruminations -- and so far, more than 70,000 people downloaded the Found Songs series via foundsongs.erasedtapes.com. Each track inspired a wealth of artwork from his fans -- submitted via Flickr. Hosting this project on their official web site, Erased Tapes Records watched the collaboration between Arnalds and his online audience flourish, and found it fitting to combine the music and artwork into one complete work. This is a limited edition, re-mastered physical release, available on CD and in a 10" vinyl version.

Title: Wintermusik
Label: ERASED TAPES (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: ERATP 018CD
This is the debut full-length release by Berlin-based Nils Frahm on Erased Tapes (first issued in a limited edition by Sonic Pieces). Nils Frahm, born in 1982, had an early introduction to music. During his childhood he was taught to play piano by Nahum Brodski -- a student of the last scholar of Tschaikowsky. It was through this that Nils began to immerse himself in the styles of the classical pianists before him as well as contemporary composers. Today, Nils Frahm works as an accomplished composer and producer in Berlin. In early 2008, he founded Durton Studio, where he has worked with Peter Broderick and Dustin O' Halloran, amongst other fellow musicians. The three instrumentals, which make up Wintermusik are piano-led pieces, colored with occasional celeste and reed organ parts. The record's equal measures of sorrowful refrains and uplifting passages, combined with a real intimacy makes for an album you'll want to return to again and again.

Title: The Bells
Label: ERASED TAPES (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: ERATP 021CD
This is the second full-length release by Berlin-based pianist Nils Frahm for Erased Tapes. As the curator of the Swedish boutique label Kning Disk's Piano Series, Peter Broderick invited Nils to record a new album of piano improvisations -- the result is The Bells, which is now released on Erased Tapes in the UK, Ireland and North America. Perhaps the most stunning aspect of what on the surface appears to be an entirely pre-planned and composed body of work comes with the discovery that these pieces were in fact improvised. These two friends share a common affinity in that they both possess an absolute mastery of melody, composition and performance -- able to deliver with devastating effect. The modest Mr. Broderick states "I remember thinking to myself as I lay there stunned, that I could spend ten years trying to write an amazing piece of piano music, and still it would never be half as good as these improvisations!" Recorded in a rented, beautiful old church in the heart of Berlin over two nights, Nils "just played," with the occasional instruction from Peter: "I spouted 'make a song using only the notes C, E, and G,' or 'make a song that you could imagine me rapping over the top of' ... At one point I was even inside the piano, laying on the strings, asking him to make a song called 'Peter Is Dead In The Piano.'" The resultant work The Bells shares the same excitement and air of playfulness. For a musician this early in his career, Frahm displays an incredibly developed sense of control and restraint in his work.

Title: ...And They Have Escaped The Weight Of Darkness
Label: ERASED TAPES (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: ERATP 022CD
Ólafur Arnalds' highly-anticipated second full-length album ...And They Have Escaped The Weight Of Darkness continues his mission to lure an indie-generation of pop and rock fans into an emotive world of beguiling electronic chamber music and delicate, classical arrangements. The sense of an organic crossover recording is reinforced by the involvement of co-producer Barði Jóhannsson of eccentric pop/rock/electronica-formation Bang Gang. Barði has successfully colored the brittle minimalism of previous releases through the addition of an array of new instruments. Those expecting a mere continuation of the minimal melancholia of his previous albums are therefore in for a surprise, as the record may be the most uplifting and richly-orchestrated work of his career. When Ólafur saw how the opening scene of a Hungarian indie film metaphorically described a solar eclipse, he instantly connected it to the concept, naming the album after a key line of the film's introductory monologue. Born in the suburban Icelandic town of Mosfellsbær, a few kilometers outside of Reykjavík, the composer has always enjoyed pushing boundaries with both his studio work and his live-shows. His new opus is set to again challenge his fan base, which is still growing rapidly. Several of these pieces were written on and off throughout his tour and benefit directly from the intensity of the live situation and the emotional roller-coaster-ride of life on the road. On the other hand, it is the result of meticulous studio work, of refining compositions in close co-operation with compatriot Barði Johannsson, known for his eccentric personality and unique electro-acoustic sound. The enthusiasm translates to arrangements displaying a new sense of sonic diversity. Ólafur Arnalds has created an even more open and spacious sound and taken his distinct style to a new level. Compared to his previous works, ...And They Have Escaped The Weight Of Darkness makes use of diverse instrumentation -- drums, guitars, voice, Rhodes, a selection of subtle synthesizers, alongside Arnalds' trademark piano as well as Tony Levin on bass. Traditional terminologies become void on his latest offering, which blends contrasting elements into an original, entirely organic new language and a sensitive ballet of the mind. Arnalds' fusion of 21st-century electronics and classical vocabulary thereby continues to decisively unwrap the sealed-off world of classical music.

Catalog #: ERATP 024CD
Codes In The Clouds, the quintet of Ciaran Morahan, Stephen Peeling, Rob Smith, Jack Major and Joe Power from Dartford, Kent have found a firm place in the vast growing instrumental rock scene. With their harmonious and blissful sound, they weave guitar melodies liable to explode any minute. If you still can't imagine intense music without vocals then you will be surprised how easily these boys will let you forget this prejudice. Energetic and charming at once, surprising and unpredictable at all times. Codes In The Clouds signed to Erased Tapes Records in 2007 and quickly received critical acclaim from the likes of BBC Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens and online portal Drowned In Sound for their first single Distant Street Lights/Fractures. With a sold-out label showcase at London's Roundhouse in 2007, the band accompanied Texan band This Will Destroy You on a string of sold-out shows throughout 2008. Shows with Jeniferever, The Boxer Rebellion and 65daysofstatic ensued. Their debut album Paper Canyon, produced by Justin Lockey (Bloc Party, Yourcodenameis:milo) received a worldwide release in summer 2009. The band then embarked on a headline UK and Ireland tour before bringing the year to a close accompanying Sweden's pg.lost on a European tour. This remix album features the likes of Paul Mullen (The Automatic), Tom Hodge, Iambic, The Soul's Release, The Echelon Effect, A Dancing Beggar, Maybeshewill, Worriedaboutsatan, Machinefabriek and Library Tapes, not to mention contributions from label mates Rival Consoles and Nils Frahm.

This is the highly-anticipated second studio album by Codes In The Clouds. The quintet of Ciaran Morahan, Stephen Peeling, Rob Smith, Jack Major and Joe Power hail from Dartford, England -- a town not known for much besides giving birth to The Rolling Stones. Since 2007, they have dedicated themselves to producing heartfelt music to rival their peers and firmly place CITC as "ones to watch" in a vastly growing instrumental rock scene. Codes In The Clouds weave guitar melodies that have an alluring and versatile combination of qualities: melancholic yet uplifting, polished yet unhinged, delicate yet powerful. Through relentless touring and determination, this young band has steadily gained recognition since signing to Erased Tapes. The skills of one particular entrant, Brighton-based producer and musician Guy Andrews (Iambic), impressed the band so much that they invited him to work on this record. While from the outside, last year looked rosy for Codes In The Clouds with a remix album release, successful tours and festival slots, it's also been a difficult year behind the scenes. Yet personal loss has proven a collective driving force, bringing the band closer as a group and shaping their surprisingly optimistic second offering. Co-produced by Erased Tapes initiator Robert Raths and label mate Ryan West, then mastered by Nils Frahm at his studio in Berlin, As The Spirit Wanes could almost be described as a family affair. Even the artwork was inspired by the band's time in Iceland, performing as part of the Erased Tapes label night at Iceland Airwaves 2010. Most importantly, it's all about songs with stunning melodies and razor-sharp hooks. From the Beach Boys pop appeal of "Look Back, Look Up" to the euphoric "Washington," down to the emotionally-charged two-minute hymn "If I'd Have Known This Was The Last," Codes In The Clouds embody their genre in its most rewarding form.

Captivating, enthralling and like nothing you've heard before, WEG makes for a surprising yet central addition to London contemporary music label Erased Tapes (Ólafur Arnalds, Peter Broderick, Nils Frahm, Rival Consoles). His brand new album Seven Idiots is now finally released outside of Japan. Shifting seamlessly from catchy pop hooks to elaborate orchestrations and brutal IDM drones, it's an irregular pop album filled with twists and turns that will have you reaching for the repeat button. At first recorded with vocals, he took the unusual composing method of building up the songs before erasing all of their vocal parts. By dismantling and re-constructing each track, WEG has produced a genre-defying album that truly transcends categorization. World's End Girlfriend hails from Nagasaki Kyushu, Japan and currently resides in Tokyo. Fascinated by his father's classical music collection, he began his foray into sound at the tender age of 10, creating his early compositions on keyboard, guitar, tape recorders and computers. To date he has composed more than 600 songs, for the most part unreleased testaments of his early experimentations.

Artist: RIVAL CONSOLES
Title: Kid Velo
Label: ERASED TAPES (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: ERATP 031CD
Ryan L. West, the man behind Rival Consoles, strives to humanize and at the same time emphasize entirely computerized sounds to defy categorization in modern electronic music. According to West, this record was all about creating genuine emotions with a synthetic set of sounds. With track names that could be straight out of a comic strip, the atmosphere of this album reminds of video game sagas such as Zelda or Final Fantasy. Kid Velo makes the perfect fictional super hero with "Eve" being his fragile yet powerful female counterpart and "Vos" as the classic antagonist. Tracks like "S.P.K.R.S." evoke images of an evil, corrupt police force, lurking deep in the futuristic suburbs. Surrounded by studio equipment, this record possibly is a result of spending more time with speakers than people. It doesn't take much to see some parallels between the fictional character Kid Velo and its creator. Rival Consoles combines hard-hitting beats with catchy pop melodies, classical theory with dance. No wonder he released a split 12" with label mate Ólafur Arnalds' minimal-techno outfit Kiasmos. There is more to this artist than meets the eye, for those not content with 4/4 beat dancefloor stormers; West is fast establishing himself as both a sound designer and programmer, having repeatedly performed at the Tate Britain Museum in London, where he drew over 2,000 visitors into his unpredictable, yet detailed sound drawings "using self-created sound manipulation tools in MAX/MSP and Super Collider."

Title: Felt
Label: ERASED TAPES (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: ERATP 033CD
Berlin-based pianist Nils Frahm is already a firebrand in the modern classical world, collaborating with contemporaries such as Peter Broderick, Ólafur Arnalds and Anne Müller. His unconventional approach to an age-old instrument, played contemplatively and intimately, has won him many fans around the world. He finally returns with the successor to his highly-acclaimed solo piano works Wintermusik (ERATP 018CD/LP) and The Bells (ERATP 021CD). Having recorded his last album live in a large, reverberant church, Nils Frahm now invites you to put on your headphones and dive into a world of microscopic and delicate sounds -- so intimate that you could be sitting beside him. Recorded late at night in the reflective solitude and silence of his studio in Berlin, Frahm uncovers a new sound and source of inspiration within these peaceful moments: "Originally I wanted to do my neighbors a favor by damping the sound of my piano. If I want to play piano during the quiet of the night, the only respectful way is by layering thick felt in front of the strings and using very gentle fingers. It was then that I discovered that my piano sounds beautiful with the damper." Captivated by this sonic exposition, he placed the microphones so deep inside the piano that they were almost touching the strings. This brought a host of external sounds to the recordings which most producers would try their hardest to hide: "I hear myself breathing and panting, the scraping sound of the piano's action and the creaking of my wooden floorboards -- all equally as loud as the music. The music becomes a contingency, a chance, an accident within all this rustling. My heart opens and I wonder what exactly it is that makes me feel so happy." Felt creates its own personal microcosm, offering a refuge of tender and honest beauty.

Berlin-based pianist Nils Frahm presents Juno, recorded and mixed by Frahm in his Durton Studio. "This session was recorded in just one night sometime in the beginning of 2010. Peter Broderick loved the sound of this synthesizer so much, he asked me to record some solo sketches with it. This is what I came up with. I didn't use any overdubs or punch-ins. See it as a synthesizer solo performance." --Nils Frahm; cover photograph by Peter Broderick. Includes download code.

Title: Music For Confluence
Label: ERASED TAPES (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: ERATP 036CD
New-Berliner Peter Broderick has established himself as a composer in his own right, may it be as a touring member in Efterklang, collaborating with label mates Nils Frahm and Dustin O'Halloran, or most recently, working on the Last Night soundtrack with Clint Mansell. His innate gift as a musical medium, picking up any instrument to turn his musings into songs, has won the 24-year old American composer many hearts worldwide. Following on from his contemporary dance scores Music For Falling From Trees and Music For Contemporary Dance, Broderick returns with a brand-new work entitled Music For Confluence. Created for documentary filmmakers Jennifer Anderson and Vernon Lott, the soundtrack takes the listener through waves of stark emotions. In his own words: "I had been asked to make the score for a documentary film called Confluence. The film is based in the Lewiston, Idaho area, not too far from where I grew up in the USA, and it chronicles several mysterious cases of young girls found murdered or gone missing around 1980, all of which seem to lead back to one man who for a variety of reasons has not been able to be charged with these crimes. So, with my minimal equipment ... I set out to create some textural soundscapes which could compliment the building tension of the story without being too intrusive or suggestive. Days and nights, snowed in and experimenting with layers and layers of whichever instruments I had around, finding a murky atmosphere that fit with the uneasy feeling which the film gave to me. On New Year's Eve I was inside, recording the final notes for the score. I had finished everything except the piece for the credits. After speaking with one of the directors of the film, Vernon Lott, we decided the song for the credits should be different from the rest of the score. So while the fireworks were exploding outside my window, I was recording 'Old Time,' a song which for me felt like a breath-of-fresh-air after story which can only leave you wondering."

Artist: ARNALDS, OLAFUR
Title: Living Room Songs
Label: ERASED TAPES (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: ERATP 037CD
Icelandic contemporary composer Ólafur Arnalds created and released a new song, one per day for one whole week during the month of October 2011. The songs were recorded and filmed live in the living room of his Reykjavik apartment and released instantly for free as streamed videos and mp3 downloads. Following in the spirit of his critically acclaimed Found Songs (ERATP 018CD, 2009) where he wrote, recorded and released a free song every day for a week, Living Room Songs takes the idea further. Arnalds invites the audience into the comfort of his living room, where the songs were recorded live with the whole process filmed. In his own words: "One night I was just playing my piano here in this apartment and I was writing a new song and I didn't have my phone on me which I usually use to record ideas. So I actually took out my MacBook and I didn't want to open like a proper recording program, so I just opened Photo Booth and recorded a video of myself playing the song so that I would remember the song. And I really liked the atmosphere of that video and that's when I thought I should do a series of songs in my living room..."
