This US power trio's sole album was released on both sides of the Atlantic in 1969, but sank without a trace. Equally influenced by blues, soul and acid rock, it's an enjoyable mixture of snappy hard rock songs and the lengthy "Love Is The Word" suite, which occupied a whole side of the original LP. Featuring backing vocals from Northern Soul legend Brenda Holloway and production by former Merry-Go-Round guitarist Bill Rinehart, it's a must for fans of bluesy psychedelic rock, and makes its CD debut here. Perhaps worth noting that this CD features Patrick Burke, a.k.a. Sunflower, on bass, just previous to his involvement with Ya Ho Wha 13!

Bobby Callender is a mythic, mystic figure in late '60s, psychedelic. jazz/Indian-influenced music. This mysterious collection of heavy acid rock appeared in 1971 shortly after Jimi Hendrix's death, boasting on its rear sleeve that the non-existent band responsible "could possibly fill the void left by Jimi." Though that proved an impossible dream, the album does stand as a highly enjoyable blast of exploitopsych, containing a mixture of Hendrix covers and originals that have been plundered for samples in recent years -- most notably by Fatboy Slim, on his multi-million selling You've Come a Long Way, Baby LP. Though at the time, this release was credited to a guitarist from St. Louis named Alex "Purple Fox" Boggs, and rumored to be orchestrated by '60s lounge producer Leo Muller, it's pretty certain that the true originators of these covers and tracks will remain forever shadowed in obscurity.

These New Haven rockers were already local garage heroes when they changed their name from The Shags to Pulse in 1968. ...of the Paintings of Paul Klee. This superbly melodic and strange distillation of pop, folk, psych and jazz was inspired by the paintings of Paul Klee, and first appeared in 1968. Despite being credited to a proper band, it was in fact a studio recording overseen by the Cleveland-based team of jazz composer Chuck Mangione and local producer/arranger Roger Karshner, who called the songs "electronic paintings." This is a suite of beatnik-styled, open-riffed rock-art with stunning, psychedelic vocals. The album is presented here for the first time on CD, complete with liner notes and two rare bonus tracks from a pre-LP 45 credited to Bhagavad-Gita.

This superb album makes its long-overdue CD debut here, showing Redwing to be an excellent, unfairly neglected piece of the early 1970s Californian musical jigsaw. They had made an earlier psych-pop album as Glad, featuring Timothy B Schmit (later of Poco and The Eagles), and when he departed they regrouped and put together this classy collection of gritty rock and roll. It was much-praised on its original release in 1971, but despite gigging alongside acts including Delaney & Bonnie, Deep Purple, the Steve Miller Band, and releasing four further LPs, the band never got the commercial breakthrough they deserved.

Shortly before he appeared on the landmark Advancement LP in 1969, vibraphone virtuoso Lynn Blessing released this, his only solo album. A superb fusion of jazz and laid-back psychedelia, it features musicians such as Sneaky Pete Kleinow (Flying Burrito Bros., John Lennon, Frank Zappa) and Wolfgang Melz (The Association, Gabor Szabo) and was produced by legendary jazz flautist Paul Horn (Miles Davis, Donovan). This enigmatic duo from Marion, Indiana only made one album, which appeared in 1970 and stands as one of the most appealing underground folk-rock recordings of its time. Few artist names or album titles have ever been so misleading as this band's. Though there are certainly elements of funk and country in the mix, their beautifully crafted songs and harmonies (to say nothing of some biting electric guitar) are far closer in feel to the West Coast psychedelia of Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Originally released in 1970 on Polydor, the album is a long-lost gem that is sure to please fans of U.S. West Coast rock -- it certainly appealed to Beck, who sampled one of its tracks on his Odelay album.

The complicated life of this legendary UK R&B outfit was almost over when this, their penultimate album, appeared in 1970.
