Artist: FONN
Title: Field 831
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: FAT 005CD
"Having previously released an untitled double pack on Fat Cat, Field 831 marks Fonn's return, and another example of the label's commitment to left-field, band-based music. Only 3 trax were recorded together an a 'band' in full studio set up, the majority of tracks are the result of improv sessions at the bands rehearsal studios or emerged as solo efforts from the bedrooms of individual band members. Whilst forging their own, distinctive space, tracks like 'Wash,' 'Carcus' or 'Squall' recall the atmospheric/motorik explorations of post-rock units like Flying Saucer Attack, Mogwai, Fuxa, Ui or Ganger. 'Title That Can Change' is a too-brief creep through flickering electronics and cool Autechre-style rhythms. The albums also features contributions from DJ Qwest, the scratch wizard from Live Human, and Skye aka Stasis." Limited stock, deleted item.

Artist: SONGS OF GREEN PHEASANT
Title: Songs Of Green Pheasant
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: FAT 040CD
2005 release. "A lazy ear might peg the album down as another in an ever-burgeoning line of modern folk releases, yet in honesty its sphere of reference lies closer to an uneven lineage of singer/songwriters and dreampop imagineers that would include Butterfly Child, Talk Talk / Mark Hollis, Simon and Garfunkel, Flying Saucer Attack, Jewelled Antler Collective, Richard Youngs, and Galaxie 500. Written heavily under the influence of novelists Boris Pasternak and Hermann Hesse ('Knulp' directly references the title of one of his novels), the album makes use of a kind of rustic visual language and timeless scenarios, attempting to utilise simple formats (folk / lovesong) in order to say complex things. Whilst the lyrics retain a slightly opaque audibility, what imagery does seep through speaks of of nature, the elements, and the universality of basic human experiences like love / hate / death all shot through with a sense of melancholic nostalgia."

Artist: DROWSY
Title: Snow On Moss On Stone
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: FAT 042CD
2006 release. "Powerfully written and beautifully played, the songs here up the ante from his previous work, revealing an artist in increasingly assured control of his craft and masterfully sculpting a sense of space and weight. Again we witness the strength and breadth of Mauri's unique and undeniable talent and some great, beautifully played songs."

Artist: GIDDY MOTORS
Title: Do Easy
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: FAT 045CD
2006 release. "Do Easy grabs you by the throat and doesn't stop shaking until it's good and ready. Honing half their album on their punishing US tour, the remaining tracks were completed by 2005, recorded in London over 4 weekends for just £900, by 21 year old Tobias Warwick-Jones, in a Greenwich Light-Industrial Unit. Giddy Motors have thrown a fit of powerful, violent music, which nevertheless retains the complexity and artistry of their debut. It's hard to believe that such a powerful sounding record has come out of such limited resources. Do Easy sounds like a band hitting their collective stride."

Artist: MUM
Title: Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: FAT 046CD
2007 release. "The album was recorded in a number of different places, one of them being the music school in the small fishingtown of Ísafjörður in the west fjords of Iceland, making use of the schools various instruments. The drums were mostly recorded in an old school house on the island of Nötö west of Finland. The songs on this multifarious album were conceived over a long period in many a different fashion, one song even dating back to the period of Yesterday Was Dramatic, Today Is OK."

Artist: MUM
Title: Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: LP + 7"
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: FAT 046LP
2007 release. Gatefold LP version with bonus 7".

Artist: AMANDINE
Title: Solace In Sore Hands
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: FAT 050CD
2007 release. "Lyrically influenced by the harsh and slightly absurd imagery of Swedish contemporary authors Sara Lidman, Torgny Lindgren and Lotta Lotass among others, major themes include forgiveness, redemption and moving on in the wake of hardship. The title is a reference to the labour and hardship often portrayed by those authors. Still based on an axis of alt country / Americana, Amandine's songs have broadened in both scope and depth. Aside from their inclination towards the likes of Songs:Ohia, The Band, early R.E.M. or Crosby Stills Nash & Young, this fresh batch of recordings highlight a leaning towards Swedish folk music and the minimalist, heart-rending composition of Erik Satie. Nevertheless, at times the songs on Solace cut loose more freely and bear rougher edges than those on its predecessor, imbued with the character of a more prevalent live recording process."

Artist: AMANDINE
Title: Leave Out the Sad Parts
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $6.00
Catalog #: FAT 052CD
"The EP leads off with the fragile lyrics and swelling strings of 'Firefly' lifted off their 2005 debut album. Two songs are taken from their UK 7" including 'Sparrow,' a highlight of the band's current live set, picking the pace up a bit and lifting their usual cool restraint, while 'Between What He's Saying...,' the oldest song recorded dating back almost four years. Rounding out the album are two previously unreleased songs recorded during the same session as the other selections. Both 'Union Falls' and 'Lovers Trial' offer the swaying feel and lyrical genius we've come to crave from Amandine, while horns and strings add their touches of melancholy in just the right spots. Influenced and inspired by traditional American Folk music, and sometimes with an inclination towards Alt. Country / Americana, they still consistently retain a keen sense of self, with a strong natural writing ability. Their songs reflect a sense of rural space, a reflective ideology, while always played simply from the heart."

Artist: NASTASIA & JIM WHITE, NINA
Title: You Follow Me
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: FAT 053CD
2007 release. "You Follow Me is Nina's second outing for FatCat, and her fifth career album. Overwhelmingly lauded for each discrete release, Nina has a way of immerging invention into a consistent style. Having established a reputation as an incredibly instinctive and distinctive drummer, Jim White has become a guest musician of choice for acts such as Will Oldham / Bonnie Prince Billy, The Boxhead Ensemble, Smog, Nick Cave, and countless others, yet this is the first record to bear his own name. His first appearance with Nina Nastasia came at the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival in 2002, just before they recorded her Run to Ruin album. He has been a perennial member of Nina's backing band ever since, making several appearances with her internationally."

Artist: TWILIGHT SAD, THE
Title: Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: FAT 055CD
2007 release. "The Twilight Sad comprises James Graham (vocals), Andy MacFarlane, (guitar/accordion/noise), Craig Orzel (bass), and Mark Devine (drums). Forming in late 2003, the band played a couple of early shows at Glasgow's 13th Note, creating half hour pieces of music utilising guitars, bass, drums, theremin, tape loops from films and old folk and country songs, effects pedals, toy keyboards, thumb pianos, computer games and various other ephemera. Subsequently they withdrew to the studio to refine their sound, rejecting any live shows offered, the band underwent a gradual metamorphosis into a more traditional, but still sonically adventurous outfit, with a more overt inclination towards emotive, eloquent song."

Artist: NO AGE
Title: Weirdo Rippers
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: FAT 058B-CD
2007 release. "Two young heavyweights from the LA skate / art / punk underworld, No Age are comprised of Dean Spunt and Randy Randall, a super-talented noise pop two piece, who until 12th March 2007 had released no recorded output whatsoever. That changed when they decided to release five ltd. vinyl only releases on a variety of DIY indie labels across the globe on the same day (namely UTR, Deleted Art, Teardrops, Youth Attack, and Dean's own PPM label), and their debut LP release, Weirdo Rippers, is a collection of recorded highlights taken from the aforementioned releases. Made available on CD for the first time, and serving as a concise introduction to the bands sound, the tracklist nevertheless follows a narrative of its own, with the songs traversing a wealth of sonic territory, and lending themselves to an album that clearly stands up in it's own right."

Artist: ANIMAL COLLECTIVE
Title: People
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $5.50
Catalog #: FAT 060B-CD
2007 release. "This EP is based around the lead track, 'People' -- a hypnotic, slow-lumbering roller that builds purposefully around a haze of shimmering guitar and piano, a see-sawing (almost Fall-like) bass riff, scuttling percussion, and dubby explosions. With little in the way of vocal lines, Avey Tare's voice is instead utilised in a series of simplistic chanted affirmations, yelps and screams."

Artist: SONGS OF GREEN PHEASANT
Title: Gyllyng Street
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: FAT 061CD
2007 release. "Coming exactly two years after the release of an eponymous debut album, the gorgeous Gyllyng Street is the third release by Songs Of Green Pheasant. Marking a departure from the beautiful 4-track folk-haze of the debut album, Gyllyng Street is Songs Of Green Pheasant's most adventurous and accomplished work to date, and sees the artist take a big step forwards whilst retaining the isolated individuality that marks them out as a truly unique voice in the contemporary out-folk / post-rock / etc. milieu. Retaining something of the cloudy, dreamlike and intimate cocooning space of its predecessor, Gyllyng Street moves further away from folk song-form towards a richly atmospheric and ambitious modus, heavily tinged with the influence of early '90s indie. The means of production remain modest, but the thinking is widescreen."

Artist: BROSSEAU, TOM
Title: Cavalier
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: FAT 062CD
2007 release. "Following 2006's introductory Empty Houses Are Lonely (which compiled highlights and hard to find recordings from Tom's career to date), Cavalier was produced by PJ Harvey collaborator and Producer John Parish at Toy Box studio in Bristol, UK over the space of a week in May 2007. A huge fan of Tom's music after witnessing him play live, John augments Tom's songs with an array of subtle, sympathetic instrumentation and / or recording technique but never allows himself to encroach on Tom's songs. Providing deft flourishes, underlining or embellishing what is already there, he pulls off the neat trick of expanding or magnifying the songs while keeping the spotlight firmly on Tom's voice and guitar. Cavalier is Tom's most personal record to date, and the recordings are referred to by Tom as an apocalypse of the self -- yet they retain all the humility, tenderness and beauty of Tom's best work."

Artist: MICE PARADE
Title: Mice Parade
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: FAT 063CD
2007 release. "It was the winter after returning from extensive touring behind Mice Parade's 2005 album Bem-Vinda Vontade, and founder Adam Pierce moved away from the edge of NYC, up to the wooded country near Bear Mountain. There he spent the following spring converting an old garage into a quite spacious recording studio, the best so far in a long line of his home studios. After the last piece of gear was installed, instruments set up, cables plugged in, some kind of test project was needed to make sure everything worked the way it was supposed to. The result is Mice Parade's first self-titled album, and (depending on how you count) seventh full-length release."

Artist: CRESCENT
Title: Little Waves
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: FAT 064CD
2007 release. "First album in three years from this cult Bristol band that includes current members of Flying Saucer Attack and Movietone. Their most beautiful, accessible release yet. Crescent first emerged in the mid-nineties, as part of the incredibly vibrant Bristol post-rock scene that included artists like Flying Saucer Attack, Movietone and Third Eye Foundation. Crescent had links to just about every other group of note in that particular array of bands. Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Matt Jones played bass on a number of releases for AMP, as well as Movietone. Bassist Kate Wright also played in Movietone handling guitars & vocals there, while Matt's guitar-playing brother Sam played in Flying Saucer Attack at times. Besides the more drone-focused aspects or shadowy minimalism of those groups, Crescent have traditionally embraced brawling full-bodied rock tinged with murky, lo-fi production, for a more visceral experience."

Artist: WELCOME
Title: Sirs
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: FAT 065CD
2007 release. "Hailing from Seattle, but arriving seemingly out of nowhere, Welcome are both distinct and familiar, at once drawing the listener in, and suggesting worlds of possibilities. An essentially traditional line-up of guitar, bass, drums, dual (often double-tracked) vocals, and a couple of guitars (admittedly augmented by some unconventional home made pedals and FX), they manage to wrench or coax new shapes at will. Formed over ten years ago, Welcome have taken their own time to find their voice, making allowances in their schedule to accommodate other bands, projects, and a lengthy hiatus, before returning with newfound focus. Having undergone several line-up changes, the band appearing on 'Sirs' comprises Jo Claxton (bass, vocals), Jon Treneff (drums), Pete Brand (guitar, vocals), and Mike Wurn (guitar)."

Artist: FRIGHTENED RABBIT
Title: Sing the Greys
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: FAT 067CD
2006 release. "An unconventional three-piece with a defined personality, and a gift for being able to nail a near perfect pop song, Frightened Rabbit convey candid tales of ordinary folk with a wry, acerbic wit via an eloquent, emotive, modern garage-pop aesthetic. Lyrically ranging from incisive social commentary, to lucid, humourous explorations of interpersonal relationships, Scott's songs are essentially folk-tinged pop songs with more fervent ambitions. At times recalling the ragged, muscular delivery of emo/punk three pieces such as early (electric period) Sebadoh, Frightened Rabbit's ouvre is nevertheless unfettered by any such aspirations, and harbours a more universal agenda. Somewhat atypically there is no bass, but crucially nothing is missing; Billy's second guitar augments or bolsters Scott's guitar/vocal hub, or drops an octave to add weight or bottom end. Grant's drum patterns are alternately or simultaneously physical and adroit, adding accent and eloquence to the score. But primarily, Frightened Rabbit is so much more than a sum of these parts, the band combining together to form something complete, singular and life-affirming."

Artist: DANIELS, DAVID KARSTEN
Title: Fear Of Flying
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: FAT 068CD
2008 release. "As with all David's recordings to date, Fear Of Flying was self-recorded at home, aided and augmented by an array of like-minded, mutually supportive musicians from the Chapel Hill based Bu Hanan Collective, which he co-founded with Alex Lazara, Daniel Hart and Perry Wright. An immensely talented artist deserving of a wider audience, David is a truly engaging, emotive performer, whether backed by his amorphous collective, or solo, with just an electric guitar as accompaniment."

Artist: TEN KENS
Title: Ten Kens
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $13.50
Catalog #: FAT 069CD
"Ten Kens combine raw vocal delivery, driving rhythms, and heavy, reverb-laden guitars with idiosyncratic song structures, creating a fresh, immediate sound. Like avant-indie contemporaries Liars and Black Heart Procession, or predecessors like Sonic Youth or Mudhoney, Ten Kens' sonic ambition never comes at the expense of songcraft; layers of noise bolster, rather than undermine, their memorable melodies."

Artist: FRIGHTENED RABBIT
Title: The Midnight Organ Fight
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: FAT 070CD
2008 release. "Recorded by Peter Katis (Mercury Rev, Interpol) over the space of two weeks, and mixed over the ensuing fortnight, Midnight was written with the intention of creating a more 'pop' sounding album. Yet although musically more immediate, vitally, the band have not forsaken the personality or passion of any of their earlier recordings. Scott Rabbit expands: 'I feel the general FR weirdness is still apparent in the lyrics and this makes for an interesting sort of juxtaposition. It sounds kind of clean, but its actually pretty fucking dirty once you get listening. Saying that, i hope all the reasons why people loved Frightened Rabbit in the first place are still there, only they may have been amplified somewhat'."

Artist: WE WERE PROMISED JETPACKS
Title: These Four Walls
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $13.50
Catalog #: FAT 072CD
"Formed in Edinburgh in 2003, We Were Promised Jetpacks tasted success early when they won their high school's battle of the bands competition. Discovered by Fatcat through their countrymen (and now labelmates) Frightened Rabbit, the foursome had already gotten attention and airplay from KEXP, XFM, and the BBC -- before any official release -- on the strength of a widely-circulated 3-song demo. Like fellow Scotsmen Frightened Rabbit and The Twilight Sad, We Were Promised Jetpacks bring emotional intensity to the forefront in their immensely appealing rock anthems. Adding nimble, driving rhythms and bristling tension into the mix, they unfold their songs into effortless-seeming choruses imbued with romanticism and pop sensibility."

Artist: WE WERE PROMISED JETPACKS
Title: These Four Walls
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: LP
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: FAT 072LP

Artist: HAUSCHKA
Title: Snowflakes And Carwrecks
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: FAT 075EP
"This is the companion piece to Ferndorf. With Snowflakes And Carwrecks, Hauschka further explores Ferndorf's themes of nostalgia and rootedness, bolstering his delightful, percussive piano melodies with strings and appealing sonic textures."

Artist: KEMIALLISET YSTAVAT/SUNROOF!
Title: Split Series #19
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: LP
Price: $13.50
Catalog #: FAT 076LP
"The 19th installment in FatCat's acclaimed split series features Finnish noise/folk collective Kemialliset Ystavat and Sunroof!, the current project from Skulllflower's Matthew Bower." Comes in a hole-punctured outer sleeve with glossy innersleeve.

Artist: STORSVEIT NIX NOLTES
Title: Royal Family-Divorce
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: FAT 080CD
"Featuring a who's who of Icelandic musicians, 11-piece Balkan-folk ensemble Storsveit Nix Noltes has earned a reputation for their impossibly frenetic live show, brought to US audiences during headline shows and a tour supporting Animal Collective. With Royal Family-Divorce, Stórsveit Nix Noltes has captured -- inasmuch as it is possible -- the blistering energy, sweat, and speed of the band's live sound. Recorded in a tiny cottage just outside Reykjavík, this collection of re-arranged traditional Balkan folk songs is a dynamically arresting, anthemically stirring set of Eastern-European orchestral adventures and exhilarating rhythmic thunder -- a record that encourages as many wild nights dancing as it does thoughtful listening with headphones."

Artist: STORSVEIT NIX NOLTES

Artist: BROSSEAU, TOM
Title: Posthumous Success
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $13.50
Catalog #: FAT 081CD
"Tom Brosseau's third full-length for Fatcat marks a huge stylistic shift away from the spare, acoustic arrangements of his previous releases. Two producers, Adam Pierce (Mice Parade) and Ethan Rose (Small Sails), helming alternate tracks -- along with a small army of guest musicians -- help Brosseau flesh and clothe his songs' sturdy skeletons, lending them breath, presence and limb-stretching immediacy. Unchanged, however, are Brosseau's earnest wit, near-unearthly emotional grasp, and captivating, vibrato-soaked voice. With Posthumous Success (named after a chapter from a biography of Albert Camus), Brosseau brings his best group of songs into a sonically rich environment, and the result is buoyant, well-crafted, and sprawlingly lovely -- his most accomplished and accessible effort to date."

Artist: BALKY MULE
Title: The Length Of The Rail
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $13.50
Catalog #: FAT 085CD
"Bristol UK scene staple Sam Jones has been recording and playing as the Balky Mule for nearly a decade, but his involvement in multiple other bands -- including Flying Saucer Attack, Minotaur Shock, Third Eye Foundation, and his brother Matt's ramshacklist folk-rock project Crescent -- made The Balky Mule's recording and gigging sporadic. His much-anticipated full-length debut collects songs recorded over the past five years, and its patient and slow-winding sound follows its methodical construction. The Balky Mule can be placed within a rich vein of very British outsiders like Hood, Pram, Bark Psychosis, Talk Talk, The Pastels or Robert Wyatt; his sound also reveals allegiances to Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Jonathan Richman, Smog, and early Beck. Sam's vocal is unmistakably English, its grain and tone similar to The Kinks' Ray Davies, while his haunting-of-the-everyday lyrical style recalls Syd Barrett."

Artist: BRAKESBRAKESBRAKES
Title: Touchdown
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: FAT 086CD
"The third album by Brighton UK's Brakesbrakesbrakes finds the group, which features former and current members of British Sea Power, Electric Soft Parade and The Tenderfoot, polishing up their sound a bit -- without sacrificing any of the immediacy or jangle that makes their slightly-countrified powerpop so appealing. Touchdown is an exuberant maelstrom of blazing riffs and relentless hooks, fuzz and squall, witty lyrics and singalong choruses that is sure to earn the band more devoted followers."

Artist: REAL AND THE REALISTICS, SIR EDDIE
Title: Una Casa
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: FAT 12025
1998 release. "Mystery (?) single from this unknown artist, involving minimal Latin percussion DJ-Tool additives on the 'A' side, and 2 percussion-based pulse tracks on the flip. If anyone out there holds the key to unlocking the riddle that is this record, please dial us up. At any hour. We'd really like to know what's going on for once." --Hrvatski. [a kind soul forwarded us the following: "Sir Eddie Real (aka Sir Eddie 'Congaman' Love) is the percussionist from Alabama 3 or A3 as they're known in the US. The Realistics is an alternative project that he's involved in with a few other musicians from Brixton, London.]

Artist: CHASM VS. BANNLUST
Title: Split
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: FAT 12026
"The fifth installment in FatCat's split12" series, Bannlust vs. Chasm shifts the emphasis back onto electronix, and merges two markedly different sounds and takes on construction. Chasm is an alias for Robert Hampson, former singer/guitarist with the late-80s guitar noiseniks Loop, and still working under his awesome dark ambient guise as Main. In the Chasm incarnation, Hampson pares away his usual layered guitar-drones in favour of a more fractured, beat-based approach. Lovingly labored over, the three tracks are created through a micro-engineered process of close-microphone recording and concrete experimentation. On the flipside, Bannlust is the project of Marco Fischer. In early '98, Marco released his first album as Bannlust on the ultra-hip Viena label, Sabotage. Entitled Digital Tension, this worked a space somewhere between the complex fractured leftfield electronica of Autechre and the dark (increasingly vogue) European electro of underground producers like I-F, Electronome and Le Car. The three tracks provided here form a moody, but mesmeric machine-space of cavernous crunch pulses, digital glitches, stuttering rhythms, and most audibly, towering washes of dirty, electro-synth noise."

Artist: IMMENSE
Title: Spontaneous Combustion
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: FAT 12028
"First release from this much talked about instrumental 4-piece from Bristol. With three highly charged tracks this is a rollercoaster ride of intense or immense proportions with a nod to band's such as Hovercraft, Slint, Sonic Youth, etc. Takes you an emotional journey, by the time it peaks you are firmly within its swollen, heart wrenching grasp, which refuses to let go." Limited stock, deleted item.

Artist: DR. SMITH AND PROFESSOR LUDLOW
Title: Professor Says Raas
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: FAT 12029
"Requesting that their identities remain unknown, the enigmatic Dr. Ludlow & Mr. Smith mark their collaborative debut for Fat Cat with a potentially massive 4 track EP. Based around a (Depth Charge-y) Western atmosphere, ricocheting gunshots and classic widescreen samples, 'Ugly' offers a staggering, seriously radio/dancefloor friendly take on Morricone. On a mellower vibe, 'Hank' is a cut up '90s rehash of a slick, sleazy '70s porno funk track that squirms and slides with dirty intent. Besides these two storming tracks are a further two that highlight the humorous side of Ludlow and Smith's persona. 'I Hope You Like Mice' is comprised entirely of Rolf Harris samples. And in keeping with Grain's previous releases the EP also features a confused essay on the art of telephone wind ups called 'Neil Phones Clive via Akai'. Limited stock, deleted item.

Artist: JANSKY NOISE VS. ANTHONY CHILD/ANDREW READ, SPEEDRANCY
Title:
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: FAT 12031
"Sixth installment in Fat Cat's split series. Featuring a head to head from Anthony Child/Andrew Read versus Speedranch Jansky Noise. Anthony is better known for his minimalistic techno as Surgeon. Jansky is an alias of V/VM's Andy MacGregor, while Speedranch is their fellow conspirator and freaky operator/DJ. Anthony and Andrew deliver an icy, isolationist void-scape, while Speedranch Jansky Noise makes moves into breakbeat territory -- breaking out and deranging a hip hop break, before dissolving it into layers of gritty noise." Limited stock, deleted item.

Artist: DR. LUDLOW AND MR. SMITH
Title: Rinsin' With The Doctor
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: FAT 12035
"Requesting that their identities remain unknown, the enigmatic Dr. Ludlow & Mr. Smith release another solid, 5-track EP, that highlights their humor and some seriously, seriously skewed atmospherics. Where their previous 12" offered a poppier, more floor-friendly exercise, 'Rinsin With The Doctor' drags their sound to a darker, more twisted zone. 'Do You Like Trains' sees its producer babbling insanely across a tense field of rippling, slowly building synth-loops. 'A Tribute to Roger Hammond' is a brief, percussive sketch dissolving into itself. 'Tall Buildings' is a massive, towering track of gritty overspill-noise, mangled voices and squelchy, phat, fucked-up hiphop dynamics. Stunningly produced." Little bird whisperings say this is Andrew Weatherall solo & why not. Limited stock, deleted item.

Artist: RICHTER, MAX
Title: 24 Postcards In Full Colour
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $13.50
Catalog #: FAT 1307CD
"With his fourth album, Berlin-based Max Richter further cements his status as one of the leading lights of modern composition. 24 Postcards In Full Colour is a dazzling conceptual exercise of great beauty and emotional resonance. Each of the album's 24 tracks is a classically-composed ringtone, an evocative miniature whose theme, though fully developed, hints at a larger piece; thus Richter explores the fugitive nature of memory through reprises and repetition throughout this intriguing album. With a sonic palette consisting of string quintet, solo piano, 16-track 2-inch tape, transistors, found shortwave radio, vinyl clicks, dust, scratches and rumble, and acoustic guitars, Richter's latest effort is both beautifully detailed and sonically rich."

Title: Ferndorf
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: LP
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: FAT 1308LP
Limited vinyl release. Originally released on CD late 2008. "Bertelmann takes an approach to piano founded in mid-20th century avant-garde, brings along a few other instruments form the classical world, and pushes the whole in the direction of simplicity, remaining unapologetically musical and getting over on chords, melody, and a little bit of texture. How appropriate that the record comes to us from the Fat Cat label, home of Max Richter and Mice Parade. Like these artists, Bertelmann has a way of pulling aspects of several genres not necessarily known for their accessibility into an instantly likable whole. Ferndorf is the sort of record that can brighten any room." -- Pitchfork

Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $13.50
Catalog #: FAT 9019CD
"Our Brother The Native's third album-length effort for Fat Cat is also their most accomplished. Drawing on both the youthful, campfire sing-along quality of their 2006 debut Tooth And Claw as well as the epic, icy expansiveness of last year's Make Amends, For We Are Merely Vessels, Sacred Psalms finds the young trio of now-transplanted Detroit natives exponentially increasing the instrumental range and the sheer depth and quality of their recordings."

Title: Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished/Danse Manatee
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: 2CD
Price: $13.50
Catalog #: FAT SP007CD
2003 release on Fat Cat's Splinter series; 2CDs for the price of one. "This double album serves well as an introduction point to the group, repackaging their first two releases. The Collective's first offering was a stunning collaboration between Avey Tare and Panda Bear called Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished, released on their own label (Animal) in August of 2000. Chiming laments for a childhood's end, the album opens with the phrase 'want to hear a secret, I know one', suggesting these secrets just might be buried deep within the flocks of high frequencies, electronic glitches, bleeps and swells that follow. The duo's approach is similar to Love's (circa Forever Changes), with Avey Tare's picked acoustic guitar flowing in perfect syncopation with Panda's tumbling drum kit. But the layers of tonal and atonal electronics that fatten the thinner pulse of the songwriter's vision make this album resemble something closer to modern electronic composition. The band's second album, Danse Manatee was released by Catsup Plate in July 2001. A 'live' sound permeates the surface audio aesthetic here, but the more intriguing development is the music itself: Geologist contributes live electronics and incidental vocals; Panda is singing more; the whole thing is more organic."

Title: Sung Tongs
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $13.50
Catalog #: FAT SP008CD
2004 release on Fat Cat's Splinter series. "A stunning album of modern folk pop. Listen in and you will hear traces of all manner of influence -- from the crazed whooping and chanting of classic Holy Modal Rounders, to the pure and perfect songcraft of Simon & Garfunkel or The Beach Boys, to Syd Barrett, The Incredible String Band and the productions of Joe Boyd, to elements of the Brazilian tropicalia / pop psychedelia of artists like Gilberto Gil or Milton Nasciemento, or the more modern sonic explorations of friends and labelmates Black Dice or labels like Mego or Kompakt. In this incarnation, Animal Collective is once again the duo of Avey tare and Panda Bear, and Sung Tongs is their most perfect, accessible work to date, a luscious flowering and flowing together of deeply catchy, hook-filled songs and intricately textured arrangements. Diverse in its scope and yet fully coherent, the album moves from chiming acoustic guitar songs to gentler, more dispersed picked ballads, to sprawling, guitar-swell psychedelics, bubbling, acid-warped vocal fx, and tribal, almost shamanic trance-outs based around around looping vocals and hypnotic kick-pulses. As far as peers and influences go, aside from the aforementioned, Animal Collective's sprawl could perhaps be located alongside fellow American contemporaries such as Black Dice; the freak-outs of '90s west coast isolationists like Caroliner and Sun City Girls; the minimalist post-techno structures and textures of Fennesz or Wolfgang Voigt; or back to '70's European commune-music utopians like Amon Duül, Harvester, Can, and similar folk-psychedelic explorers."

Title: Prospect Hummer
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $8.50
Catalog #: FAT SP009CD
2005 release. "Animal Collective return with their first release of 2005 -- a brand new four-track EP, which features the sweet voice of the near legendary Vashti Bunyan. Having long been huge fans of her sole album, the recently rediscovered 1970 gem, Just Another Diamond Day, Animal Collective happened to meet Vashti when they played in Edinburgh on a 2003 tour supporting Four Tet (Four Tet's Kieran Hebden had recently played as part of Vashti's band during her first live set in over 30 years at the Royal Festival Hall). Following this meeting, ideas were hatched and conversations began, culminating in the group selecting these three beautiful songs for her to make a home in. Acoustic-based and once again recorded by their friend Rusty Santos (who co-produced Sung Tongs along with the band), Prospect Hummer centres around the three harmonised vocal tracks, 'It's You', 'Prospect Hummer', and 'I Remember Learning How To Dive', all of which were recorded over three days in March 2004 at Idle Luxury Studios in London, immediately before the band set off on their European tour to promote Sung Tongs. Weaving their luscious, multi-layered web around Vashti's singing, these three tracks feature Animal members Avey Tare, Panda Bear and Deakin. A fourth track, the instrumental 'Baleen Sample' was completed late 2004, and includes samples from band member Geologist, who was absent from the Four Tet tour."

Catalog #: FAT SP011CD
2005 release. "Following 2004's widely acclaimed Sung Tongs album and more than a year of snowballing momentum, Animal Collective return with an eagerly-anticipated album -- a truly stunning, inviting, often heart-warming experience. Feels is the band's seventh album to date -- their sophomore effort for FatCat -- and sees them again kicking off from their previous release to explore another different direction. Where Sung Tongs was largely acoustic-based and the product of just two members of the Collective (Avey Tare and Panda), Feels is in contrast a full group effort (also including Geologist and Deakin). Moving further away from the suggestion of folkish affinities; it is electrified, rhythmically more urgent, and overall a considerably denser work. Those sweet melodies and big catchy hooks remain intact, and the songwriting is once again bold, brave and adventurous, as ever indelibly stamped with their own unique personality. Hugely inventive and tightly focused, Feels simply sounds like nothing else right now."

Title: Worlds In Flux
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: DVD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FAT SP014DVD
2007 release. "Semiconductor is the alias of Brighton-based duo Ruth Jarman and Joseph Gerhardt, who since 1999 have been making stunning, cutting-edge digital artworks in the form of sound-films, music videos and live animation. Guided by their obsessive interests in landscape, architecture, geology, geography, chaos / systems theory and artificial intelligence, they explore many varied processes of digital animation and the potential of the computer to unite sound and image. What they reveal in the process is a physical world in flux -- cities in motion; shifting landscapes and systems in chaos. Central to these works is the role of sound, which becomes synonymous with the image as it creates, controls and deciphers it. Finely crafted digital work is combined with analogue processes that tailor the randomness and errors within computer systems as a co-conspirator. This DVD offers a comprehensive overview of their work over the past five years, featuring 3 music videos (including those for múm and QT?), 4 live cinema pieces, and 6 short films." Dual sided (PAL/NTSC) region-free DVD. Includes 20-page booklet.

Title: Make Amends, For We Are Merely Vessels
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $11.50
Catalog #: FAT SP015CD
2008 release. "The eight songs here clock in at between six and fourteen minutes each and take their cues more from expansive post-rock/noise rather than any freaked folk scene. Self-recorded in Josh's dimly-lit Michigan basement between May -- December 2006, they were aided by Kayleen Nilsson on viola, a schoolfriend who has been in the band as an additional member for shows and some recording for the past year. Where the previous album was all jagged / ruptured songcraft, Make Amends is a much more fluid, immersive affair, a dense weave of layered (and partially buried) sounds worth a deliberate and slow building grasp of dynamics. Devoid of regular verse / chorus structuring, its songs sprawl out and unfurl with their own particular logic, mixing rich drones and flickering detail with brief but swollen, almost anthemic bursts of emotion, and the simmering threat of explosion. At different points it recalls the likes of Sigur Rós, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Stars Of The Lid, Popol Vuh, or Black Dice circa Beaches and Canyons."

Title: Ames Room
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $11.50
Catalog #: FAT SP016CD
2008 release. "Whilst creating a sound-world entirely her own, Ames Room shows a similar single-mindedness and (autodidactic) adventurousness to fellow peers like Tujiko Noriko, Islaja, Lau Nau, Eglantine Gouzy, Foehn, or Leila Arab, also sharing something of the homespun, sprawling beauty of the likes of The Pastels, Pram, or Crescent. Beautifully pieced together, tracks unfurl like a series of intricate constructions, or like some kind of strange blown-up world of insects or curious creatures -- the whole teeming with life and a great sense of fun. Broad ranging and full of character, the album moves from languid dream-pop to stomping, upbeat tracks, to more introspective or abstract numbers. With sparkling melodies at times exuding a music-box sweetness, spindly electronics -- barbed, bubbling, and tinkling - weave around a vast array of instruments including cello, electronics, drums, guitar, bass, keyboards, recorder, glockenspiel, xylophone, melodica, and trumpet, as well as percussion played on all manner of found objects. Playful rhythms increasingly accumulate, with machine programming cohering alongside layered live syncopations."

Title: E-RMX 7 (Immense/Fonn)
Label: FAT CAT (UK)
Format: 7"
Price: $5.50
Catalog #: FAT TP7E7
7th single in this 8-part series, featuring remixes from Immense and Fonn. "When Fat Cat were offered to put together a series of remixes for One Little Indian artist Emiliana Torrini, it stimulated such lively thought and debate in the office that it seemed foolish not to take the project on. However, instead of a typical approach to a remix release, with a bunch of big-name remixers on a single LP, Fat Cat introduces artists featured on their own roster, as well as friends and associates who have proved their creative prowess with their own recordings, on eight 7" singles to be released over the period of two months (2 every other week). Not only is the music remixed, but also the original album artwork re-rendered by artists such as Alex Tea and Obsessive Eye, bringing the 'remixing' idea full circle." Each single is limited to 1000 copies worldwide.
