Another compilation from Andy Votel! "When you first discover a record on the enigmatic Sain label it takes a while before you successfully identify its original country of origin -- Is it Turkish? -- Is it Hungarian? -- before too long you're pleasantly surprised to find it's Welsh! With the sleeve being strictly devoid of any English language, you can't quite figure out if it's a private-press or the results of a community music project, both of which constitute instant record collector nirvana, until you find another Sain record and this is where the addictive gene takes hold. Aesthetically a Sain 45 has all the all the unique and exotic trappings of a French '60s pop EP so the fact that they were manufactured on the same soft soil as your local record shop is almost unbelievable. The added fact that the label itself has a political history not dissimilar to your favourite Brazilian or Turkish records is another surprise. On further inspection you realise that Sain could arguably be the longest running, self styled, British contemporary, independent record label to exist in our lifetime AND the fact that its non-conformist ideals predate 'punk' by almost 10 years could surely confirm that Sain records is possibly... the coolest record label to exist ever!? Maybe we should listen to the music first. Sain's A&R policy epitomises what an indie label SHOULD act like... without boundaries. You like prog-rock with blueprint trip-hop beats? -- so did Sain.. You like ethereal girl groups with mystical acid folk overtones? -- so did Sain. You like psychedelic rock operas based on Druidism and witchcraft? -- so did Sain. How about a radical Welsh answer to 'The Grumbleweeds' with a fat-ass 4/4 hip-hop breakbeat that's been sampled by either Cut Chemist or DJ Cashmoney? Er... so did Sain. Do you like Farmers and male voice choirs? ....Me neither but Sain did. Andy Votel and Dom Thomas discovered Welsh music by mistake... Gruff Rhys (from Super Furry Animals) has never been able to escape from it. After years of trying to fill non-Welsh speaking dancefloors with the sound of slate-mine psychedelia we decided to join forces and compile a one-stop compendium of the best undiscovered psych, prog and folk to trickle out of this previously untapped barrel. Over the past 12 months we have collectively attempted to listen to every Welsh, rare record ever made 'Looking For The Perfect Cymru Beat' on your behalf... and that's why we've called it
Welsh - Rare - Beat

"Alongside the recently resurrected (but previously unreleased) seminal scores for
The Wickerman
,
Deathline
and
Psychomania
, Stanley Myers'
Sitting Target
is another UK thriller soundtrack that has sat in the proverbial 'can' for over 30 years while cinematic sonic-enthusiasts have had to make do with homemade bootlegs taped from second generation video tapes in hope of soundtrack amnesty. After composing 'groovy-movie' music for films such as
Otley
and
No Way To Treat A Lady
, the
Deer Hunter
axe-meister brings us his most forward thinking fuzzed-out-orchestral-proto-hip-hop score to date (albeit three decades late). Maestro Myers provides the brooding soundscapes for the first-ever R-Rated British movie which saw
Lovejoy's
Ian McShane accompany the animalistic Oliver Reed on a Pentonville escape mission fuelled by a bleeding heart, a gallon of red mist and a diabolical lust for revenge. Never before released on any format! Re-mastered from the original quarter inch reels."

Previously reissued on Akarma, this version is probably a little bit more "legit", a little bit more desirable (4 bonus tracks, Andy Votel liner notes, mastered from original tapes). "Chris Harwood's debut LP for Miki Dallon's obscure British Birth label was the only record she ever made. No singles were ever released and it was seldom heard beyond these shores -- the making of a record collector's holy grail. Alongside the obscure Vashti Bunyan LP, Shirley Collins and Julie Covington's early solo LP,
Nice to Meet Miss Christine
remains one of the most sought after English female folk records ever released. You just have to listen to her cover of CSN&Y's 'Wooden Ships' to realize why. Miss Christine's naked vocals ride a rock-solid back beat with clavinet funk and a wash of luscious strings sending you into a trance-like state. Featuring a veritable who's who of rock and folk, including Yes guitarist Peter Banks, Strawbs guitarist Dave Lambert, Joe Cocker/Juicy Lucy/Sensational Alex Harvey Band hammond organist 'Tommy Eyre' Plummer, bass player Roger Sutton (Brain Auger & Julie Driscoll)-- this rare-as-hens-teeth record (fetching in excess of £200 on internet auction sites) is on the want list of any serious collector of any of the above bands."

"Finders Keepers present the first ever collection of musical works of Bruno Spoerri, the mythical character who used to work with members of legendary Krautrockers Can and composed music for engineering companies and made motivational music for industrial sites and factories utilising concrete techniques, primitive sampling techniques and contemporary experimental psych-rock and funk musicians. Bruno also composed embryonic pre-Nintendo sprite-themes for the Germanic equivalents of It's A Knock Out and various Takeshi's Castle style fantasy sporting events -- as well as educational robot sex films and art school cinematic anomalies. Packed with rare and previously unseen photographs and detailed liners by Bruno, and following the success of Jazzman Records long deleted and highly collectable 7" reissue a few years ago, this unique collection of Bruno's vast, and largely unheard until today, body of work is sure to go onto similar critical and commercial success!"

"How rare can a rare record be? Medium rare? Uncooked? How about unreleased? Susan Christie was a Philly-based sophomore folk singer who had one novelty hit for a major label and never quite recovered afterwards, her psychedelic take on country standards and handcrafted tales of inner-city solitude backed by a break heavy folk-funk rhythm section was never accepted as a commercial viability by record company bigwigs. They obviously couldn't quite muster their Nostradamus sensibilities to foresee what future hip-hop producers and DJs would be feeding into digital music-machines 30 years down the line! Luckily three-fifths of a handful (literally three!) privately pressed vanity copies were manufactured in early 1970, one of which became the source material for Finders Keepers in their expanding library of obscure, obtuse, obsolete and obsessive vintage music from the '60s and '70s. Uber-legend John Hill who penned the acid-rock floor-filler 'Love, Love, Love, Love, Love,' for Wool and Pacific Gas And Electric produced the album which features 8 tracks including a Johnny Cash cover and a 12 minute 'drugsploitation' epic called 'Yesterday, Where's My Mind' featuring Susan flipping vocal styles between Janis Joplin and Margo Guryan (...who was in fact a close friend of Susan's at the time of recording)."

2006 release, available now. "B-Music is an independent collective of DJs, musicians and music lovers dedicated to the obsessive and painstaking perusal of obscure, obsolete, exquisitely obnoxious, unbelievable, underexposed and undeniably delectable discs of experimental pop music from the psyched-out '60s and '70s. B-Music.co.uk provides a pocket library for discerning aficionados of fascinating rhythms from six times around the globe -- unifying record collectors, beat diggers, fanatics of the avant-garde and trash-merchants alike. Centred around the Mancunian eponymous travelling club and bar and along with twin record labels Finders Keepers and Delay 68,
B-Music
represents a passionate, un-blinkered approach to the culmination of way-out sounds encompassing all elements of off-kilter counter-culture: psych prog space rock ye-ye Euro beat folk funk jazz and whacked out movie musak, as well as cherry pickings of bugged-out cinema, design and literature in token doses. This is the first-ever
B-Music
compilation featuring undiscovered classics compiled by Andy Votel (Twisted Nerve), Dom Thomas, David Holmes, Gruff Rhys (SFA), Jerry Dammers (The Specials), Jazzman Gerald, Cherrystones, Doug Shipton, Ben Hatton, Chris McBride (45 Kings/Fat City), Chris 'The Judge' Arthur and Bob Stanley (St. Etiennce) scoured from all over the world over 100+ years of crate digging!"

FKR 009LP
Deluxe gatefold LP version of the soundtrack to this Czech underground film from 1973. "Finders Keepers make musical history once again with what they regard as their very finest, darkest and most magnificent hour as they release the delicately haunting and sacred score to Jaromil Jires' essential Eastern European hallucinogenic-baroque-witch-flick
Valerie And Her Week Of Wonders
. Lubos Fiser provides what is perhaps the greatest musical score of all the maligned Czech New Wave feature-films with a gossamer-fragile blend of pastoral-orchestral folk songs and clockwork harpsichords. From the very first delicate chord to the final crescendo, this joyous sound is as addictive as the bizarre imagery seen in this seldom celebrated cinematic gem (which was screened in front of 300 mesmerized patrons of this year's Green Man festival). Naturally, the list of musical pioneers who freely confess their allegiance to the score verifies its elevated place in contemporary pop. Birmingham's dedicated concrete-pop-psych combo Broadcast recently paid homage to the soundtrack on their
Ha-Ha Sound
LP while groups such as Espers, Fursaxa and Marissa Nadler recently contributed to a live performance of the soundtrack as a homage to its unwaning influence on their music. Echoes of the score can also be heard in recent music by Vashti Bunyan and it has been cited as a huge influence to the likes of Tim Burton who based the carnival scene at the end of
Big Fish
on the original film. Previously unprepared for public consumption, the immaculate release has been compiled in close accordance to the original storyline which was released in 1935 as a surrealist novel by Vladislav Nezval. The orchestral suites of music have been separated into 23 chapters with titles derived from the controversial novella. This seminal release comes complete with unseen archive images, original international poster designs and new and extensive sleevenotes by Andy Votel, Professor Peter Hames and Trish Keenan from Broadcast."

"If you were to tear a hundred pages from Pamela Des Barre's
I'm With The Band
, a fistful of anecdotes from
The Abba Story
, and the most titillating tales from Marianne Faithfull's biography and staple them all together you may well find a mutant monograph which is brave enough to hold a flickering candle to the story of Sarolta Zalatnay. The protective packaging of this, first ever, compendium of Zalatnay's crown jewels would not provide anything close to the adequate ink space for a worthy account of her life in the Hungarian public eye (which has previously and periodically been documented in a series of autobiographies which are unlikely to ever benefit an English language translation). After ten successful albums, drawing together a veritable who's-who of Hungarian progressive and psychedelic rock and utilizing some of the toughest dancefloor friendly metronomic drum breaks and a hard funk-rock sound years ahead of their Western European counterparts, the decline of Communism in Hungary paved the way for the widespread availability of Western music, literature and cinema -- English and American music predictably infiltrated Hungarian culture overnight and the young record buying public began to turn their backs on home grown music and many faithful Eastern European artists were demoted to mum and dad's record shelf like musical photo albums. Don't worry though -- Gal Costa is a huge name in Portugal but not many Portuguese people have heard 'Tuareg.' The youth of Hungary certainly know who Zalatnay is... but how many of them have heard that break at the start of 'Hadd Mondjam El?' All of Zalatnay's LPs have remained unknown outside of her native country. On a global scale, Zalatnay's releases sit alongside
Did You Give The World Some Love Today Baby
by Sweden's Doris Svensson, Marta Kubiová's
Songy A Balady
from Czechoslovakia, as well as early LPs by Greece's Elpida, Poland's Maryla Radowics and a host of French recordings from France Gall and the likes of Lulu and Pet Clarke in the UK. 'Beware, Sarolta Zalatnay is addictive!' And lucky for us, on her travels through the woods she left us a lot of shiny white pebbles which have spearheaded a Sarolta Zalatnay revival amongst English and American DJs almost 30 years later."

"Back in the latter half of the 1960s, the burgeoning idiosyncratic group of alternative filmmakers coming out of (then) Czechoslovakia known as the Czech New Wave were taking art house cinemas in Western Europe and America by storm. The hour-long films that came out of the infamous Barrandov production house played a competitive rival to that of the French and Italian new waves with their very own immaculate and spell-binding takes on cinema verité, film noir, surrealism and cinema concrete. But after the Soviet Union invaded Czech in August 1968, the clampdown on non-conformist creative arts saw over 70 films either banned or withdrawn from production in a mass culling of film reels until 1970. It is not until recent years that the genre has become widely recognized as a veritable and virtually untapped source of inspiration for fans of experimental cinema, psychedelic cinematography, baroque costumes and scenery, music and graphic design.
Daisies
pulls together what you might call the 'Holy Trinity' of the Czech New Wave -- director Vera Chytilova, costume and set designer Esther Krumbachova, and cinematographer Jaroslav Kucera -- arguably the three most forward-thinking and truly experiMENTAL minds in the whole of the CNW collective. The follow-up to the critically-acclaimed release of (the previously unreleased)
Valerie And Her Week Of Wonders
-- another Czech masterpiece -- this release was previously unprepared for public consumption and taken from the original reels. This immaculate release has been compiled in close accordance to the original storyline and comes complete with unseen archive images, original international poster designs and new and extensive sleevenotes by Andy Votel and Professor Peter Hames. This release also carries personal endorsements from Jarvis Cocker, Trish Keenan (Broadcast) and Jim O'Rourke."

"Gruff Rhys joins the Andy Votel, Dom Thomas and the Finders Keepers team once again to produce this, the second instalment in our critically-acclaimed and best-selling
Welsh Rare Beat
series. Derived from Dyfed bands with added friends from further a field in the Swansea valleys, Cardiff and Flint in the north, this is a wide and wonderful collection of bands -- some were part of a political upheaval that empowered Welsh speakers to sing and express themselves in their mother tongue, part of a wider international youthquake, others were singing from the heart, paying the bills and just happened to live in Wales during this cultural crossroad. Here for your enjoyment are songs mostly about the sky, flying, seagulls, clouds and ghosts. But also songs that deal in political activism, The Mabinogi, or issues of Welsh identity. Girl group boy meets girl songs, parodies of boy meets girls songs, Welsh language covers of English and American hits of the day sung in a traditional Welsh style counteracted by traditional Welsh folk songs played in contemporary Anglo-American styles. The follow-up to the critically acclaimed
Welsh Rare Beat

"Gruff Rhys joins the Finders Keepers team once again to produce this, the third instalment in our critically-acclaimed and best-selling
Welsh Rare Beat
series -- combining the 2 ultra rare Galwad Y Mynydd EPs on one album for the first time ever! Galwad Y Mynydd defined a Dyfed-centric harmonic gentle vocal sound. Formed by brothers; Alwyn (17) and Eifion (16) Daniels, their Camarthen grammar school friend Derek Brown (18), and Camarthen Technical College student Mike Harries (19) on drums; Galwad Y Mynydd (The Call of The Mountain) ticked all the right boxes in their quest to deliver in their own words 'a new style of contemporary Welsh folk music.' Choosing musicality over volume, beauty and heartache over protest and politics, they were a young anomaly in Welsh language pop. Songs such as 'Can Cadwaladr' were aimed at the dancefloors of a new breed of Welsh language pop sound system that mushroomed in the 1970s, spearheaded by the charismatic and bearded DJ, Mici Plwm. GYM clearly understood their audience and were winners of the pop group competition at the 1972 Pontrhydfendigaid eisteddfod. They were, however, never to achieve their ambition of becoming a fully-formed professional outfit, rather, they were the opening act of a scene of bands that eventually morphed into smooth folk rock college super group; Hergest. The follow-up to the critically-acclaimed
Welsh Rare Beat
compilation and accompanying album to the new
Welsh Rare Beat 2
compilation, this album features exclusive liner notes from Gruff Rhys and Derek Brown (in Welsh). These two EPs have previously been unavailable on CD, or indeed anywhere outside of their original 7" EP releases."

"The music you are about to hear defies categorization. But for all intents and multi-purposes, this record is a folk album. Embodying all the aesthetic watermarks of a private press country LP, Selda's debut long player from 1976 has masqueraded as lamb dressed as mutton, throwing many a discerning wolf from the gourmet scent. Behold! Space age, Anatolian, electronic, progressive-protest, psych-folk-funk-rock from the Middle East. All of the above ingredients are presented immaculately with utmost authenticity and conviction to create a delectable hybrid concoction which has never been replicated or equalled in the 3 mutant decades since its recording. After what seems like a decade of cross-continental detective work and blind alley buffoonery, Finders Keepers finally have the auspicious privilege to introduce the incredible music of one of the most important figures in Anadolu rock's history, Ersen. Ersen performed nearly all kinds of Turkish music forms in his life adventure -- rock, pop, folk, arabesque -- but in his early years (late '60s/early '70s) he was a successful psych-rock singer, working with names such as Kardaslar, Dadaslar, Mogollar, Üç Hürel. Each of the artists involved in the recording of this LP continued to record radical and experimental music and are considered the cream-of-the-crop among Eastern psych aficionados. In recent years, the legacy of Anatolian progressive rock has gone from strength to strength, gaining popularity amongst DJs, producers and record collectors as an unrivaled source for unique sounds rarely found in other genres of international music and, until now, rarely heard outside their native environment. Thirty years down the line, the Anatolian Invasion is on its way to a record store near you and this -- the third installment -- follows on from our critically acclaimed best selling Mustafa Ozkent and Selda Bagcan reissues."
