Title: Alright Jack
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FLED 3015CD
Released by Fledg'ling in 1998. The Home Service that went into Raezor Studios in Wandsworth in December 1985 to make their third LP was a band with a pedigree second to none in its field of English music. That third LP was Alright Jack and it found the band on a creative streak. At the time of its release, critics hailed it as one of the seminal albums in its field, one to rival the best albums that Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span, The Albion Band or Richard Thompson had produced. The passage of time has borne out how perceptive those assessments were, for like those other classic albums, it proved more than a "genre album." In a quintessentially British tradition, Alright Jack proved a classic. They had decided that the album's centerpiece would be a setting of folk songs by Percy Grainger for large wind ensemble. Grainger, a highly complex character with enough quirks and eccentricities to fill the pages of a sizeable psychological study, had been regarded as one of the finest pianists of his day and the preserved evidence in the form of piano-rolls and recordings demonstrates a pianistic virtuosity on an Olympian scale. What is more, he had been a true visionary in the field of folk song collecting, for, in an era when many collectors allowed their preconceptions about the lower classes, good taste and musical orthodoxy to color and distort their results, Grainger's attitudes were positively revolutionary. For example, other collectors, it would seem, often bowlderized language which might offend or doctored or rejected as aberrations, modes or time signatures which failed to comply with scholarly expectations or theories.

Title: Morris On
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FLED 3037CD
Lovingly remastered and packaged in a smart new digipack, the classic Morris On makes a welcome return to the catalog. This folk-rock classic was originally released in 1972 by Island Records. Morris On is one of the great eccentric masterpieces of British electric folk music -- Morris music has never been as soulful (or as much fun) as this. A tremendously powerful and important recording, Morris On led to a re-examination of the English Morris dance and an upsurge of interest that continues to this day. In 1972, three former members of Fairport Convention -- Ashley Hutchings, Richard Thompson and Dave Mattacks -- got together with accordion-maestro John Kirkpatrick and acclaimed folk fiddler Barry Dransfield to record this groundbreaking album. Shirley Collins even guests on two tracks. The results were quite extraordinary and led to a re-examination of the Morris tradition and the formation of many new dance sides. 37 years later, leader Ashley Hutchings continues to tour with his popular Morris On band.

Artist: GRAHAM, DAVY
Title: Folk, Blues & Beyond...
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FLED 3050CD
Reissued in 2005 by Fledg'ling. Folk, Blues & Beyond was first released on Decca Records in 1965, and is one of the most important recordings from the 1960s folk revival. Davy Graham was a UK guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and serviceable-to-perfunctory vocalist, setting standards for succeeding generations. Graham was the first guitarist to emerge from Britain whose work combined stylistic elements from Julian Bream, Big Bill Broonzy, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Ali Akbar Khan, Leadbelly, Joe Pass, Segovia and others too numerous to name. John Martyn described him as his "absolute hero" in a Guitar Player interview in 1975. Of Scottish and Guyanese parents, he came to personify musical adventure, his adoption of non-standard guitar tunings, most notably D-A- D-G-A-D, arguably his most important legacy. His uniqueness became, directly or indirectly, a model for Martin Carthy, Bert Jansch, Wizz Jones and later musicians as diverse as Martin Simpson and J]aso[rgen W. Lang. "Covers of traditional folk standards like 'Black Is the Colour Of My True Love's Hair' and 'Seven Gypsies' combine with interpretations of compositions by Bob Dylan ('Don't Think Twice, It's Alright'), Willie Dixon ('My Babe'), Charles Mingus ('Better Git in Your Soul'), and Reverend Gary Davis ('Cocaine') for an eclecticism of repertoire that wasn't matched by many musicians of any sort in the mid-'60s." --Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide. This release has been carefully remastered, with restored original artwork. Also added are five very rare bonus tracks, new sleeve-notes and previously-unpublished photographs.

As always with Davy Graham, the music seems to defy categorization. Perhaps the simplest description would be "great." On Large As Life And Twice As Natural, Davy is joined by the legendary Harold McNair on flute, Dick Heckstall-Smith on saxophone, Jon Hiseman on drums (both from Colosseum) and Danny Thompson (from Pentangle) on double bass. For this carefully remastered edition, Fledg'ling have restored all the elements of the original artwork and added several previously-unpublished photographs. On Watch The Stars, Dorris and John are joined by the classical guitarist Tim Walker and Danny Thompson (from Pentangle) on double bass. Artist: MCGREGOR GROUP, THE CHRIS
Title: Very Urgent
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FLED 3059CD
Originally released on Polydor in 1968. During this year, The Chris McGregor Group were riding high on the London jazz scene, playing and hanging out with all the rising stars of British free jazz. Very Urgent, their eagerly-awaited debut recording, was a joyful call of intent. The album mixes simple but utterly unstoppable tunes and exhilarating horn charts -- immediately establishing a vitality and exuberance that would continue to define the group. Nevertheless, their evident preference for raw energy and rough spirit over absolute precision never quite obscures the technical proficiency available to the ensemble. There is often a sense of things falling effortlessly into place that's only found in the most exceptional units. Very Urgent was produced by Joe Boyd and engineered by John Wood at Sound Techniques studio in London, during the same months they were also working with several other luminaries of the Witchseason stable -- Fairport Convention, Nick Drake and The Incredible String Band. Forty years later, Fledg'ling Records are very proud to bring this splendid album back into print. The passing years have not diminished the album's impact. Very Urgent is the third release in our campaign to reissue McGregor's wonderfully creative recordings from the late '60s and early '70s.

Artist: MCGREGOR'S BROTHERHOOD OF BREATH, CHRIS
Title: Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FLED 3062CD
Reissued by Fledg'ling in 2007, this is a classic title from 1971 by Chris McGregor's magnificent big band -- Brotherhood Of Breath. Arguably one of the most influential albums to emerge from the London jazz scene of the early 1970s, the Brotherhood of Breath was an exuberant big-band created by South African-born pianist and composer, Chris McGregor. In South Africa, McGregor had formed the racially mixed Blue Notes in the early 1960s. By 1964, finding it very difficult to work at home, they left for Europe, finally settling in London in 1966. The Blue Notes -- Chris McGregor, Dudu Pukwana, Mongezi Feza, Johnny Dyani and Louis Moholo -- made a huge impact on London's jazz scene and befriended many in London's emerging avant-garde jazz community. The Brotherhood Of Breath was essentially the expatriate Blue Notes augmented by a large number of their friends from the British jazz community. The ensemble played an energetic mixture of Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Sun Ra, but retained a unique feel due to the South African influences and the intelligent arrangements. McGregor dreamed of keeping the band together "not as an institution, but as a community." Unfortunately, the economics of touring with such a large ensemble made that impossible. The group with a varying line-up continued to perform and record sporadically until McGregor's untimely death in May 1990.

Artist: MCGREGOR'S BROTHERHOOD OF BREATH, CHRIS
Title: Brotherhood
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FLED 3063CD
Reissued by Fledg'ling in 2007. The long-overdue release on CD of Brotherhood -- a classic title from 1972 by Chris McGregor's magnificent big band Brotherhood Of Breath. Never before officially reissued, this wonderful album continues the ground-breaking music of their debut album. Mighty music for the head, the heart and the feet. "The Brotherhood of Breath is the kind of band you want to tell people about. It's not for private enjoyment, or for worship by a elitist cult. The Brotherhood's music is for sharing with the world, and that's what makes its name so apt: the musicians and the audience are brothers (and sisters), and they share the same breath, becoming merely parts of the same giant metabolism. Chris McGregor came out of South Africa in 1964, leading a band called the Blue Notes. Three of those Blue Notes can be heard on this record, and the fact that Mongezi Feza, Dudu Pukwana and Louis Moholo are still with Chris, is some tribute to the fantastic empathy they share, both personally and in the music they make together." --From Richard Williams' sleeve notes.

He has toured with Roy Harper, Pink Floyd and Roger McGough, amongst many. On And The Great Stampede his band are pianist Zoot Money (of Big Roll Band fame), BJ Cole -- Europe's finest pedal steel guitarist, electric violinist Mick Kaminski (from the Electric Light Orchestra) and the fabulous Fotheringay rhythm section -- Pat Donaldson and Gerry Conway. The legendary Ollie Halsall adds lead guitar on the first track. For this edition, Andy Roberts has written extensive sleeve notes chronicling the recording and the background to the songs. Artist: KIRKPATRICK, JOHN
Title: Make No Bones
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: 2CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FLED 3065CD
Originally released on Fledg'ling in 2007, Make No Bones are two CDs of recordings by John Kirkpatrick -- each one representing one half of a typical evening's performance. No frills, no additives, just how it comes. To come straight to the point, John Kirkpatrick is widely acknowledged as a master of the squeezebox. A world-class musician who has been at the forefront of the British folk scene for nearly 40 years. To "make no bones" about something is to say or do something without delay or scruple, regardless of the consequences; to be honest and direct without any risk that the statement may be misunderstood; to come straight to the point. This is two CDs of John Kirkpatrick performing traditionals and originals at his very best.

Artist: FOTHERINGAY
Title: 2
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FLED 3066CD
This is what would have been -- and now IS -- the second release for UK folk-rock legends Fotheringay, including all members Sandy Denny, Pat Donaldson, Trevor Lucas, Gerry Conway, and Jerry Donahue. These are the original recordings from 1970. Fotheringay remain one of the great might-have-beens of British music. They lasted less than a year, and released just one album, but their disappearance robbed the early '70s scene of a group of musicians capable of taking folk-rock to new heights of subtlety and musicianship. Now, the nine songs on that debut album; assumed for almost four decades to be their sole testament, are joined by the eleven that would have constituted a follow-up. Sadly, they broke up during the recording sessions for their second album. Incredibly, all the tapes survived in various record company archives. Thirty-eight years later, the surviving members of the group have mixed all the material to finally complete this remarkable album. When originally released, the debut album went straight into the Top Twenty in both Melody Maker and NME, and is now an acknowledged classic recording of British folk-rock. It is very, very rare that musicians get the chance to complete a project begun 38 years earlier. The second Fotheringay album has been eagerly awaited by all fans of Sandy Denny, British folk-rock, and by pretty much everyone in general.

Artist: FRENCH, FRITH, KAISER, THOMPSON
Title: Live, Love, Larf & Loaf
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FLED 3067CD
The album Live, Love, Larf & Loaf was first released in 1987 and is a wonderful and rare collaboration between four experimental world-class master musicians: John French (original drummer with Captain Beefheart's Magic Band); Fred Frith (founder of the art-rock ensemble Henry Cow); Henry Kaiser (innovative experimental guitarist and composer); and Richard Thompson (founding member of Fairport Convention). Richard Thompson once joked that if his presence on an album with John French, Fred Frith and Henry Kaiser was expected to help it appeal to a wider audience, it didn't say much for the state of their careers. Their first album from this unlikely ensemble mixes sophisticated playing with some humorous repertoire and idiosyncratic covers. Live, Love, Larf & Loaf covers a bewildering variety of genres, from folk and R&B to avant-garde and comic opera. The New York Times made it their "Rock Album of the Week" -- "As it draws on music from at least four continents, Live, Love, Larf & Loaf romps past borderlines." Fledg'ling Records proudly presents this newly-remastered, maximum length CD, including 4 previously-unreleased live bonus tracks.

Artist: BLUE BLOKES 3
Title: Stubble
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FLED 3068CD
This is the debut release by Blue Blokes 3: old pals Ian Anderson (English Country Blues Band, Hot Vultures, Tiger Moth, etc.) on vocals, guitar & slide guitar, Lu Edmonds (Mekons, Billy Bragg's Blokes, PiL, The Damned, Kirsty MacColl, etc.) on vocals, cumbus, saz, guitar, and Ben Mandelson (Billy Bragg's Blokes, 3 Mustaphas 3, Tiger Moth, Orchestre Jazira, etc.) on vocals, mandolin, baritone bouzouki, banjo, tenor guitar, guitar and more. Past social twanging and banging apart, this crew came together one dark and rainy night in the spring of 2007 to pay tribute to English folk sweetheart Shirley Collins on the occasion of a celebratory evening to mark her receipt of the MBE from another queen. Their wonky take on old time nomadicized English country blues and death folk seemed to appeal and one thing led to another. Within days, Fledg'ling invited them to make an album, and then came offers to appear at other events. Produced by Hijaz Mustapha and Jamie Orchard-Lisle, Stubble is the result. Blues standards go willingly on trips through the Balkans, the Steppes or the South Downs, old English folk songs from the family closet get newly-clothed in subtle tones of vintage Congolese guitar and space saz, and certain participants' greatest hits get revisited with instruments they'd not suspected existed at the time they were originally recorded. The album's title could be a subtle allusion to it having taken little more than a week to effortlessly grow, but actually -- like the trio -- it also just looked good on paper.

Artist: MCGREGOR SEPTET, THE CHRIS
Title: Up To Earth
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FLED 3069CD
Circulated among collectors, but up until now never released, Chris McGregor's Up To Earth is now issued on Fledg'ling. In 1969, The Chris McGregor Group (spearheaded by South African-born pianist and composer Chris McGregor) were riding high on the London jazz scene, playing and hanging out with all the rising stars of British free jazz. Sessions for the previously-unreleased Up To Earth brought together a dream team of South African exiles and some of the finest young players on the British scene -- Chris McGregor (piano), Dudu Pukwana (alto saxophone), Mongezi Feza (trumpet), Louis Moholo (drums), John Surman (baritone saxophone, bass clarinet), Evan Parker (tenor saxophone), and Barre Phillips/Danny Thompson (double bass). Up To Earth was produced by the legendary producer Joe Boyd and engineered by John Wood at Sound Techniques studio in London, during the same months they were also working with several other luminaries of the Witchseason label -- Fairport Convention, Nick Drake and the Incredible String Band. The album was mastered and test pressings produced before the project was shelved. The group morphed into the spectacular big band the Brotherhood Of Breath, and all energies were transferred to recording the Brotherhood's debut album. Fledg'ling Records are very proud to release this remarkable album as part of their campaign to reissue Chris McGregor's wonderfully creative recordings from the late '60s and early '70s.

Artist: CHRIS MCGREGOR TRIO, THE
Title: Our Prayer
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FLED 3070CD
Another previously-unreleased gem from South African pianist/composer Chris McGregor and his cohorts in '60s UK free jazz. Our Prayer was culled from the same sessions that produced the also never-released Up To Earth in 1969 and was produced by Joe Boyd and engineered by John Wood at Sound Techniques studio. The previous year they had signed to Joe Boyd's illustrious Witchseason production company alongside Fairport Convention, John and Beverley Martyn, Nick Drake and the Incredible String Band. Our Prayer comprises a magical trio set, focusing on McGregor's piano playing, accompanied by the Blue Note's Louis Moholo on drums and Barre Phillips on double bass. Both Our Prayer and Up To Earth records were planned for release in 1969 before being shelved as the McGregor group morphed into the spectacular big band, the Brotherhood of Breath, and all energies were transferred to recording the Brotherhood's debut album.

Artist: WILLIAMSON & HIS MERRY BAND, ROBIN
Title: Journey's Edge
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FLED 3071CD
In 1975 as the Incredible String Band dissolved, member and chief bard Robin Williamson relocated to Los Angeles. He soon began work recording a tremendous body of new songs and a backlog of material that didn't fit the repertoire of the late-period String Band. These songs hark back to the glory days of the Incredibles. Based around the majestic acoustic ensemble playing of the Merry Band, this long out-of-print album is a highlight of Williamson's career. Journey's Edge is Williamson reaching out to something new, more homespun and more organic and reaching for things older and more philosophical. It looks to the past and it looks to the future. The album marked the beginning of a very creative period for Robin -- leading the Merry Band, beginning his interest in the Celtic harp and ancient bardic poetry. Journey's Edge was released in 1976 on the Flying Fish label in the USA. This deluxe Fledg'ling edition will see the album's first official European release, and now includes 10 previously-unreleased bonus tracks.

Artist: FRENCH, FRITH, KAISER, THOMPSON
Title: Invisible Means
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FLED 3072CD
Fledg'ling reissues Invisible Means, the second oddball masterpiece from four of the world's finest experimental master musicians, originally released in 1990 on Windham Hill Records. This was the follow-up (and only release by this group) to the much better-known Live, Love, Larf & Loaf album, released on Rhino Records in 1987. John French was the original drummer with Captain Beefheart's Magic Band, Fred Frith is an experimental composer and founder of the art-rock ensemble Henry Cow, Henry Kaiser is an innovative experimental guitarist and composer, and Richard Thompson is a founding member of Fairport Convention. Together, these legendary musicians from the U.S. and the UK conjure up a heady mix, covering a bewildering variety of genres, from folk and R&B to avant-garde and comic opera. Underpinning the whole album is the extraordinary level of their musicianship. Amongst the highlights are John French's hilarious "Now That I Am Dead," in which a deceased musician discovers death is the career boost he's being waiting for, and Richard Thompson's remarkable "Begging Bowl" and the simply stunning "Killing Jar." Fledg'ling Records is proud to present this newly re-mastered CD, including a previously-unreleased live bonus track.

Artist: ANDERSON'S COUNTRY BLUES BAND, IAN
Title: Stereo Death Breakdown
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FLED 3073CD
Fledg'ling Records reissues Stereo Death Breakdown by Ian Anderson's Country Blues Band, a lost gem of the British blues scene of the 1960s -- remastered from the original tapes, including two contemporary bonus tracks. At the height of the British blues boom in the late 1960s, a handful of musicians came to prominence reinterpreting the acoustic country blues of the 1920s and 1930s. Championed by Radio 1 DJs John Peel, Mike Raven and Alexis Korner, and the music press of the day like Melody Maker, the emerging stars of this mini-movement were soon snapped up by major labels. So in the winter of 1968/1969, UK musician Ian Anderson assembled a lively country blues band for his debut album Stereo Death Breakdown, gigging exhaustively alongside household name electric bands and visiting American blues legends like Mississippi Fred McDowell. Influenced by ancient 78rpm recordings of early American country blues artists like Big Joe Williams, Charley Patton, Sleepy John Estes, Tommy McClennan, Garfield Akers, Tommy Johnson and the Memphis Jug Band, and inspired to perform live by contemporary heroes like Spider John Koerner, the teenage Ian Anderson had founded the first specialist country blues club in the UK -- Bristol's Folk Blues Bristol & West. Out of this club came an English country blues compilation album Blues Like Showers Of Rain, the spark which ignited the boom by propelling artists like Jo Ann Kelly, Mike Cooper and Ian onto the nation's airwaves. Originally picked up by then fast-rising hip independent Island Records (signed by legendary head of A&R Guy Stevens), Ian Anderson's Country Blues Band's Stereo Death Breakdown had to be moved sideways at the 11th hour for release by Liberty/United Artists after pressure from a rock band on the label led by a musician of the same name. In later years -- with original Liberty vinyl copies selling for over £100 apiece -- the master tapes of Stereo Death Breakdown were thought to be lost forever, but recent detective work by Fledg'ling Records unearthed them in the vault where they'd been carefully stored. So here, remastered from those original tapes, with two extra tracks from a contemporary session and new notes by Ian, is a long-lost British blues collectors' piece, finally re-issued just in time for its 40th anniversary.

Artist: FULLER, JESSE
Title: Move On Down The Line
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FLED 3074CD
Jesse "The Lone Cat" Fuller (1896-1976) was one of the great American blues troubadours. A remarkably expressive singer and fine 12-string guitarist, Fuller developed his unique Bay Area street performance one-man-band around his fotdella (a foot-operated hammer-and-pedal string bass) and harmonica/kazoo/cymbals/washboard-rig, and would later go on to record for labels such as Cavalier, Good Time Jazz, and Prestige. This CD includes his earliest recordings, including the original version of his classic "San Francisco Bay Blues," together with a splendid session taped in London in 1965 for Topic Records. One track, "John Henry," has been unavailable since the early 1960s. In the 1960s, the decade when the wider world reached out to embrace him, Fuller's "San Francisco Bay Blues" became one of the most popular numbers in the standard repertoire of blues and folk singers at that time. But Fuller was not a blues musician, although he played the blues. Neither was he strictly-speaking a folk musician, as the term was then understood, for his act incorporated elements of minstrelsy and vaudeville -- in other words, show business -- and he'd travelled far beyond the "rurals" to work in Hollywood. His own term "folk songster" best describes who he was and what he did. This record is just as important as a document of an oft-neglected historical aspect of American music as it is a tribute to the peculiar talents of a quite remarkable musician. Housed in stylish digifile packaging, including extensive sleevenotes by legendary producer Joe Boyd and acclaimed UK photographer Val Wilmer.

Title: The Dance Of The Demon Daffodils
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FLED 3075CD
Squeezebox maestro John Kirkpatrick is one of the giants of the British folk scene. Over the years, he has appeared on hundreds of recordings, but seldom has he had the opportunity to record a whole album of his original compositions. The Dance Of The Demon Daffodils is just that -- a splendid collection of his tunes recorded by the master, using a 3-row British chromatic button accordion, 1 and 2 row melodeons, and an Anglo concertina. "I've been making up tunes for almost as long as I've been playing them. It's impossible to explain why that should happen, but it just does. Quite a few of my own compositions have been recorded over the years, not only by me." At the last count, John had composed over 130 tunes, and this album showcases 32 of his very best. Contains extensive, detailed sleevenotes, full of Mr. Kirkpatrick's quirky humor; housed in a stylish digifile package.

Title: The Incredible String Band
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: FLED 3076CD
The Incredible String Band was founded in Edinburgh in 1965 when Clive Palmer, Robin Williamson and Mike Heron began a journey which would connect traditional folk music, ragtime and the emerging counterculture/psychedelic scene. Their recordings paved the way for what has since become known as "world music." High-profile Incredible String Band fans include Paul McCartney, Billy Connolly, Robert Plant and the Archbishop of Canterbury. Signed by Joe Boyd to the prestigious Elektra label, their early recordings are among the finest and most imaginative of the period. The Incredible String Band -- their 1966 debut LP, is a powerful mix of their many influences. Highlights include "October Song," "When The Music Starts To Play," "Empty Pocket Blues," "Smoke Shovelling Song" and the closing "Everything's Fine Right Now." For many fans, this beguiling album was the first step in a life-long fascination for all things ISB. The band quickly became favorites on John Peel's pirate radio-show "The Perfumed Garden." "Through the incense and the exotic blend of instruments and influences came an original and memorable combination of shining talents destined to outlast their era." Carefully re-mastered by original producer Joe Boyd and engineer John Wood. Housed in a stunning digipack with all elements of the original artwork. New sleevenotes from Clive Palmer and Robyn Hitchcock. Mike Heron (lead vocal), Clive Palmer (vocal, guitar, kazoo and banjo), Robin Williamson (lead vocal, violin, guitar, mandolin and whistle).

Title: The 5000 Spirits Or The Layers Of The Onion
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: FLED 3077CD
The second album by The Incredible String Band, The 5000 Spirits Or The Layers Of The Onion was first released in July 1967. With Clive Palmer having left for India, Mike Heron and Robin Williamson were accompanied by Danny Thompson on double bass and Licorice on vocals and percussion. The album demonstrated the beginnings of what Williamson describes as using the studio as a giant paint box. Standout songs include Heron's "The Hedgehog's Song," Williamson's beautiful "First Girl I Loved" (later recorded by Judy Collins, Jackson Browne and many others) and his "The Mad Hatter's Song." Enthusiastic reviews in the music press were accompanied by appearances at venues such as London's UFO Club (co-owned by Boyd), and Queen Elizabeth Hall. Their exposure on John Peel's "Perfumed Garden" radio show on the pirate ship Radio London, and later on BBC's "Top Gear," made them favorites with the emerging UK underground audience. The album went to #1 on the UK folk chart, and was named by Paul McCartney as one of his favorite records of that year. Carefully re-mastered by original producer Joe Boyd and engineer John Wood. Housed in a stunning digipack with all the elements of the original artwork. New sleevenotes from Mike Heron. Mike Heron (lead vocals, harmonica and guitar), Robin Williamson (lead vocals, bowed and bass gimbri, guitar, flute, Soma sitar, tamboura, drums, rattles, oud and mandolin), Danny Thompson (double bass), Licorice (vocals and finger cymbals), John Hopkins (piano), Nazir Jarazbhoy (sitar, tamboura).

Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: FLED 3078CD
The Incredible String Band's The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, their finest studio work, reached the top 5 on the UK album charts soon after its release in March 1968, and was nominated for a Grammy in the U.S. Robert Plant has said that Led Zeppelin found their own way by playing Hangman's and following the instructions. A departure from the band's previous albums, the set relied heavily on a more layered production, with imaginative use of the then-new multi-track recording techniques. The album's centerpiece is Mike Heron's "A Very Cellular Song," which incorporates a Sikh hymn and the Bahamian spiritual "I Bid You Goodnight" (learned from Joseph Spence). Carefully re-mastered by original producer Joe Boyd and engineer John Wood. Housed in a stunning digipack with all the elements of the original artwork. New sleevenotes from Robin Williamson. Catalog #: FLED 3079CD
Wee Tam & The Big Huge is the fourth album by The Incredible String Band, and the band's most ambitious album to date, conceived as a double LP. First released in Europe as both a double LP and separate single LPs in November 1968. In the U.S., Elektra released the two albums separately as Wee Tam and The Big Huge, on the same day. The set is considered by many fans to be, along with its predecessor The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, their finest studio work. By the second half of 1968, The Incredible String Band saw their popularity and reputation growing on both sides of the Atlantic, and they began to sell out large concert venues like the Fillmore (East and West) and London's Royal Albert Hall. The album reflected an even wider variety of influences than the previous two releases and was packed to overflowing with classic songs from Mike Heron and Robin Williamson. Title: Sweet England
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: FLED 3080CD
"Sweet England, along with its sister album False True Lovers (FLED 3029CD), was recorded in the spring of 1958 when I was twenty-two years old. I had been living for the previous two years in London with Alan Lomax, the American folklorist, working for him as editorial assistant on his book The Folk Songs of North America and on his field recordings from America, Great Britain, Italy and Spain. The tracks that make up these two albums were recorded by Peter Kennedy and Alan in two days at Peter's home 'studio' in Belsize Park. English traditional music, at its best, expresses and provides everything in song that I need and feel, both musically and emotionally. Sweet England represents the first shaky steps of a journey that I have been on all my life, and that, happily, I still am." --Shirley Collins from the new sleeve-notes.

Fledg'ling Records are very proud to present a remastered edition of this classic recording from the infancy of the mid-20th century folk revival. Guest musicians are Guy Carawan, Ralph Rinzler and John Hasted. Sweet England is a stunning collection of British and American traditional song, capturing a turning moment in the English folk song revival of the 1950s. Including a stunning, new digipak design with new sleevenotes from Shirley Collins.

Title: Panic Grass & Fever Few
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FLED 3082CD
This is a beautiful and remarkably assured debut album from UK modern folk-singer Ian King. Panic Grass & Fever Few mixes English traditional song with a very contemporary sound palate. Working with the acclaimed On-U sound crew Adrian Sherwood and Skip "Little Axe" McDonald -- has enabled King to bring a new and exciting perspective to the songs of Old England. The album's title comes from a phrase in John Hersey's war retrospective Hiroshima where the author refers to the green shoots of herbs that swiftly emerged from the ashes of that catastrophic event (King thought it juxtaposed rather nicely with the gentler folk sensibilities of parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme). "It's been quite a while since I felt this excited and impressed by a singer. Ian King has star-quality and a commanding stage-presence. He is a grown-up singer, straightforward and strong, and his band, which includes the incomparable Skip McDonald, surprises and intrigues with accompaniments that are elegant, witty, daring and powerful. This is English folk music for the 21st century!" --Shirley Collins

Artist: MATTHEWS & SEARING QUARTET, IAIN
Title: Joy Mining
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FLED 3083CD
This is the debut release by UK-born/Netherlands-based singer/songwriter Iain Matthews and The Netherland's Searing Quartet. On paper, Iain Matthews and the Searing Quartet is a strange pairing. Quartet leader Egbert Derix is an established jazz composer, and Iain Matthews has had a long-established history in the UK as one of the foremost folk singer/songwriters, especially considering he was a founding member of Fairport Convention, going on to form the highly-successful Matthews' Southern Comfort and Plainsong. However, if we break down these borders, look deeper and think in terms of quality, rather than genres, it's a musical marriage made in heaven. The pair first came together in 2003, touring with a live version of Matthews' legendary 1970 solo album If You Saw Thro' My Eyes. Plans were made at the time to forge a writing partnership, only for it to be capsized by other career commitments. But not before they had two new songs in the bag and the realization that an ease and understanding of the writing process existed between them. Fast forward five years, when Matthews extended an invitation to Derix and the Searing Quartet, to appear in his performance series, "Common Grounds." Part of the concept for the series is that the host plays two songs with his guests. Egbert suggested doing two older Matthews compositions and the result was quite astounding. It appeared to all in attendance that the two songs had been performed by this line-up many times; "I had shivers running up and down my spine," says Matthews, "It was almost a life-changing experience. I knew then that something magical was in the air." Within weeks, the pair were writing together again, and this time the result was breathtaking. Derix's finely-honed sense of melody and Matthews' carefully-crafted lyrics and emotion-laden vocals created something very precise and special -- soaring ballads supported by a well-wrought, classic jazz backbone.

Title: My Halo At Half-Light
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: FLED 3086CD
Ten classics from the American folk song tradition receive a series of gorgeous remakes by the remarkable Snakefarm. It has been a long ten years since Anna Domino and Michael Delory made their debut with the widely-praised Songs From My Funeral. As a solo artist, Anna Domino released four remarkable albums and two EPs for the Belgian label Les Disques du Crepuscule, between 1984 and 1990. Those recordings are often cited as major influences on the British trip-hop movement centered around Massive Attack and Portishead. Yet, the glorious New York summer afternoon that Snakefarm crept into her consciousness, Domino knew she'd found a whole new musical window to leap through -- "I was waiting for the light" and said "We should take a bunch of those great old songs about murder and such, and start doing them with modern arrangements." The idea refused to sit still, and as soon as she returned home, Domino and Delory set to work on the experiment. "Just to see what would happen." Though subtle percussion and loops had distinguished her earlier recording, in Snakefarm, Anna wanted the beats to be more prominent, yielding percolating arrangements that could carry the narrative content of the words. It worked. "It was so much fun," confesses the singer, "the arrangements almost wrote themselves. What surprised me was how it didn't take any forcing at all." My Halo At Half-Light continues where the previous album left off and features scintillating arrangements that bring these stories from our collective past into the sunlight of today.

Artist: ROBERTS, ANDY
Title: Urban Cowboy
Label: FLEDG'LING (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: FLED 3088CD
With Plainsong currently on their 40th anniversary farewell tour, now is the perfect time to re-acquaint ourselves with this fabulous solo collection from ace guitarist Andy Roberts. Urban Cowboy was recorded before the formation of, during and just after the dissolution of the original Plainsong. The album was originally released on the Elektra label in 1973. The new Fledg'ling CD edition comes complete with a 12-page booklet, (worth buying just for Andy's reminiscences from those heady days in the early 1970s) and has been digitally-remastered from the original studio master tapes. The album includes guest appearances from Neil Innes, Richard Thompson, Martin Carthy, B J Cole, Zoot Money and Iain Matthews. Roberts formed Plainsong with Iain Matthews towards the end of 1971 and released the remarkable In Search of Amelia Earhart album the following year. After the group went their separate ways (for a decade and a half), he continued his solo career as a guitarist and a sought-after composer for film and television. Andy Roberts has been a member of the Liverpool Scene, Grimms, Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, Albion Band, Pink Floyd, Roy Harper's Black Sheep, Hank Wangford's Lost Cowboys and many other illustrious ensembles. Throughout his career he has continued to work as an accompanist with some of Britain's leading poets -- Roger McGough, Brian Patten, Willy Russell and many others.
