Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
FNC 001.1LP
The vinyl version of the new Shonky album is released as 2 separate 12"'s, 4 tracks each; this is part 1. Track 1 "Time Zero' -- the album's title track, lets loose with spiralling effects and a repeat-repeat vocal that heightens the psychedelic vibe. The airy chimes of "Nebula" evoke the questing spirit of Detroit and bring in a breath of Kraftwerk a la
Tour De France
. The obvious titular nod to Voodoo Ray is reflected in the warm, burnished tribal-tech of "Cosmic Ray". He returns to psychedelic techno with stand-out cut "Galactica," a tune whose dense atmospherics, backdrop of wolf-like wails and clever use of a female vocal would make the Belleville Three proud. Finally,
Time Zero
has landed and it doesn't merely justify the hype, it goes beyond. This is not a first class debut. It's a first class album, full stop.
Time Zero

Vinyl version, part 2. "Ondulation" hypnotizes with shimmering waves of acid and gleaming synth lines. There is more classic, intricate Detroit styling up his sleeve on "Odyssey," a clean cut tune rippling with sharp metallic synths and an eerie radio-signals-from-space motif, which tempts you to follow the sound to another dimension. Sexy, dubby, hip jackin' musical movements rule the intro on "Magma," moving into a deeper, more atmospheric space. And the final track "Minor Planets" embraces pure techno with its lush washing synths and crystalline beats. Smoothly tripping you out to now, to this moment, to

This is the debut full-length release from
Shonky
(
Olivier Ducreux
). Honing his taste within the Parisian dance scene via
Dan Ghenacia
's infamous Sunday "Kwality" Batofar parties, and 12"s on labels such as Mobilee, Resopal Red and Sub Static, Shonky now lives and DJs in Berlin. As Shonky himself describes, "Time Zero
is kind of techno/hypno, with many roots coming from Detroit techno and San Francisco psychedelic house; always super hypnotic. Ultimately, I did what I do the best: danceable tracks
." The title track opens Shonky's space-travel with spiraling effects and a repeat-repeat vocal that heightens the psychedelic vibe. The airy chimes of "Nebula" evoke the questing spirit of Detroit and bring in a breath of
Kraftwerk
a la Tour De France. "Ringside With Dione" slows down the beat to push up the intensity; turning out late night music with dubby, shooting stabs that turn your mind inside out. The obvious titular nod to acid house classic "Voodoo Ray" is reflected in the warm, burnished tribal-tech of "Cosmic Ray." He returns to psychedelic techno with stand-out cut "Galactica," a tune whose dense atmospherics, backdrop of wolf-like wails and clever use of a female vocal would make the Belleville Three proud. Beckoning you ever further into the cosmos, "Ellipse" matches horn licks to gently rattling percussion as the main melody seems to come floating in from outer space; its shimmering, progressive synths peaking and peaking. Freak n'Chic label-head
Dan Ghenacia
presents
Eyelights
, a deep, dance-focused insight into Ghenacia's musical world of today, yesterday and with exclusive tracks for the future. Ghenacia himself stresses that "the overall style of the mix is deep house; deep, groovy and hypnotic, but in a modern way." Since 1995, after returning from San Francisco with a bag of vinyl, Dan Ghenacia has been educating the Parisian underground with his take on house music. Via Ghenacia's Kwality Sunday morning afterparty residency at Le Batofar, from 1998-2002, where he met his Freak n'Chic label mates
Shonky
,
Dyed Soundorom

Title:
Doubts & Shouts
Label:
FREAK N' CHIC (FRANCE)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
FNC 004CD
Freak 'n Chic begin their 2009 album assault with much-hyped
Anthony Collins
and his debut long-player,
Doubts & Shouts
. Collins has developed a formidable reputation through his old school/new school take on house music, and his releases on Get Physical, Liebe*Detail, Bang Bang, Cecille, Curle, Vakant and Freak n'Chic have seen support from just about every jock worth their salt.
Doubts & Shouts
looks set to further that reputation with 10 new tracks which manage to sum up Collins' dancefloor credentials while equally appealing to a home-listening environment. The Paris-based producer has a style balanced between U.S. percussive, almost Afrobeat grooves and traditionally European production techniques and melodies which perhaps betrays his upbringing in both New York and the South of France. Either way, a strong theme runs throughout
Doubts & Shouts
in the form of a combination of unfaltering grooves, atmosphere and frankly astonishing mode production techniques which manage to stand out yet remain subtle at the same time. Whether it be the more laidback tracks like "Fragile" or "Blossom," or the unmistakable dancefloor burners such as "Mist" or "Mondays," this strong theme draws the album together as a whole and makes it sound complete. Some outstanding keyboard work really shines on
Doubts & Shouts
too, which further displays the sort of prodigious talent this young producer has beyond simple dancefloor workouts.

Format:

Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
FNC 025EP
This is the first-ever solo EP release from label-head
Dan Ghenacia
and also the 25th release for Freak N' Chic. "Garden" plays a sinister hi-end above an ever-rolling dubbed groove that never stops pushing forward. "Cycles" brings deeper, dubbier vibes to the foreground; ominous synths weave throughout while the bass rolls and the added squelch detail keeps you moving. Late night flavors.

This is the premier release from long-time Freak 'n' Chic DJ collaborator,
Dyed Soundorom
. "Question" lays down a dubby slow-moving groove -- let the pace take you up and bring you down to the deep-grooved finish. "Infection" instantly creates a deep and dubby late-night vibe that holds back the pace and keeps the funk grooving.

Format:

Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
FNC 027EP
The title track from
Shonky
's debut artist album
Time Zero
gets a remix package from two of the underground's most in-demand production talents:
Paul Ritch
and
Mathias Kaden
. Ritch's mix holds down a steady and undulating, percussive groove that lets the spiraling effects of the original loose midway, leading back into a rolling finish. Mathias Kaden strips it back and creates a beat-laden take on the original, with some added irate synth detail.

FNC 028EP
DJ/producer
Anthony Collins
is a rising star on the French house and techno scene with his mix of deep house, house, minimal and deep tech. "Rabouine House" is heavy on the percussion and bass, with a Spanish guitar interlude and Italian/Turkish chanting vocals throughout. Pure rhythm and groove.
Mikael Stavöstrand
's mix takes it slower and darker, working dubbed-out percussion and in-and-out vocal clips for a slightly horizontal effect.

Rabouine House
EP gets a remix package from Freak n'Chic talents
Dyed Soundorom
and
Seuil
. We already know about the original -- pure rhythm and groove. So why work on it? Because Dyed Soundorom knows how to hold a groove and tease it, while teasing you in the process. Using only the backbone elements of the original, Dyed works the groove to maximum tension. Seuil uses heavy percussive elements, some Spanish guitar strings and an undeniable house/funk-laden groove that pushes you on and on.

Seuil
has released music on labels including Einmaleins Musik, Igloo-Rec, Minibar, Leftroom, LesIzmo:r and his own Eklo imprint.
Still-Nox Asleep
is Seuil's first official EP on Freak n'Chic. "Trapped House" is the main frame of this release and lays down forward-pushing, clean, dry beats. "Raw Blood" features pure house grooves, heavy on the b-line and designed to make you move. "Lunamax" takes on a slightly more dark cosmic quality. Easy grooves carry you through.

FNC 036EP
The always on point Freak n' Chic continue their early-2009 bombardment with a superb EP from newcomer
Djebali
. Starting with the urgent, Chicago vibes of "Don't Be Forced," this 12" features tracks for every point in a set. While the aforementioned cut is peak-time, the sinister "California" is pure afterhours with its spooky synths and heavy funk bass drops. "Son Of Sun" rounds off the vinyl package brilliantly by delivering some old-school, sample-based house to proceedings.

Anthony Collins
is one of the safest pair of hands in house right now, because every release he puts out is both high quality and individual. Taken from
Doubts & Shouts
, "Prism" is Collins at his hip-swinging best, taking in elements of Detroit techno, NY house and modern tech-house and carefully intertwining them. Collins teams up with
Tony Rodriguez
aka
Brothers' Vibe
for "Raw Vibes." Rodriguez's drum-fuelled NY house speaks volumes, and paired with Collins, it's a match made in heaven.

Format:

Price:
$12.50
Catalog #:
FNC 039EP
Dyed Soundorom
's
Icare
EP takes in three tracks -- the title track is a loose shaker that is as old school as it is modern. "Love Juice" presents bumping drums and a gorgeous, walking bass line which oozes the sort of late-night funk that defines Dyed's DJ sets. "She Knows" is deep-as-hell and locks into a groove early on and rides it out wonderfully, interrupted only by a spoken vocal refrain which increases the energy. Simple, honest, and quality house music.

Roudor & Capulet EP
Label:
FREAK N' CHIC (FRANCE)
Format:
12"
Price:
$12.50
Catalog #:
FNC 040EP
Shonky
presents three tracks of forward-thinking house music. The title track has a confident, peak-time swagger with the kind of earthy, funky bass and trippy, effect-laden top lines that have defined Shonky's output. The B-side cuts display a deeper but no less "dancefloor" side to his personality. Both tracks are classic, soulful house music with modern twists; "Carnage" treads a slightly more vocal path while "Arena" walks an instrumental route. Simple, groovy house -- exactly as it should be.

Freak n' Chic anticipates
Anthony Collins
' debut LP
Doubts & Shouts
with a second vinyl sampler containing remixes from
Losoul
and
Seuil
. Losoul retains the melancholic vibe on "Tango Bizarre," but gives it a slightly tweaky, jazz-inflected twist with that classic Losoul groove. Seuil reworked "Prism" -- a 12-minute percussive houser and a real album highlight. Seuil boils the percussion down to a simmering, undulating interpretation where the bass does all the work. Two superb remixes, two superb tracks.

Alexis Bernard
aka
Seuil
returns to Freak N' Chic with
Freak & Violence
, which sees the Parisian leader-of-the-new school take his impeccable sound into deeper, late-night territory. Warm synths and a spoken vocal dominate the title track. The synths have a trippy vibe but are balanced by ultra-groovy drums. On "Lost In The Soul Shower," sparse keys and complex drums give way to the ebb and flow of distorted, filtered organs. A wonderfully fresh take on deep house.

FNC 044EP
Freak n' Chic main man
Dan Ghenacia
teams up with Freak n' Chic new talent,
Djebali
. With "Eightball," the duo deliver an electro-break-fuelled slice of deep house which sounds 100% fresh. Filtered and phased chords swirl around the mix, creating a blanket of warmth while frantic hi-hats push the track forward with enough drive for peak-time moments. "Now U Need" is a darker affair, with jarring percussive effects and a staccato bass line welded to a clinical drum track to create an austere yet infectious groove. An unmissable release.

LoSoul
's
Time Passes
EP features vocals by
Fadila
, backed with a remix from
Dyed Soundorom
. "Time.. Passes" is typical of LoSoul's wonky interpretation of house. The bubbling mids and on-the-beat melodies shouldn't work as a groove, but do so so effectively, that Fadila's breathy vocals are given an airtight backdrop. With just a few subtle effects, "Time.. Passes" is emblematic of what is best about reductionist dance music production. Dyed Soundorom's complex yet simplistic remix is percussive, funky and trippy.

Anthony Collins
presents the seductive
Come On Over
EP featuring
Justus Köhncke
. The title track sparks with the passion of an early house cut, with flashes of piano and soulful vocals in a contemporary twist. Featuring vocals by Justus Köhncke, this cut is a future classic. The stripped-back sounds of "Run Away" rev up the engine and push hard on the gas, testament to Collins' talent for satisfying every angle of the night.
