MY CAT IS AN ALIEN
Title:
Through the Reflex of the Rain
Label:
FREE PORCUPINE SOCIETY
Format:
CD
Price:
$15.00
Catalog #:
FPS 011CD
"In early 2004, the free-floating guitar chords of My Cat Is An Alien interacted with the real voice of their hometown Torino, Italy. After several days of incessant winter rain, they let down a wide-stereo-range microphone fixed to a thirtyfoot-long cable from the window of their Space Room, which hung three feet off the ground, swinging by the wind, capturing the sounds of rain and cars from the outside streets. Inside the Space Room, Maurizio and Roberto Opalio performed alien guitar tunes and astral percussive textures, with Roberto mixing the outside soundscape in real-time with the inside improv session.
Through The Reflex Of The Rain
is a weird, intimate and very impressive atmosphere."

Way Their Crept

FREE PORCUPINE SOCIETY
Format:
CD
Price:
$15.00
Catalog #:
FPS 014CD
"
Way Their Crept
is a beautiful and haunting release of processed vocals, keyboards and guitar recorded by Liz Harris in Oakland, California. Melodic and emotive elements create a complex contrast of grit and grain that Harris shares with fellow Oakland free-noise musicians Tom Carter and Xiu Xiu. Her music parallels the spiritual, meditative bent of guitarist Christina Carter while giving the breezy ambience of Brian Eno and Harold Budd a noisier, more brittle presence. Like an imagined ode to Throbbing Gristle by Arvo Pärt,
Way Their Crept
sounds like a choir of ghosts recorded a hundred years ago. Doppelgangers, phantoms and black holes emerge from countless layers of tonal and vocal arrangements and weave through the swirling fog of tape hiss and distortion."

BASTARD WING
Title:
Crystal Thicket
Label:
FREE PORCUPINE SOCIETY
Format:
CD
Price:
$16.00
Catalog #:
FPS 016CD
"Guitarist Christina Carter, reigning queen of new/ weird/psych/free-folk heavies Charalambides and Scorces, has been making emotionally intense, spiritually inclined music since the early '90s.
Crystal Thicket
is Carter's first release with Andrew MacGregor under the Bastard Wing moniker. The two have worked together previously, collaborating on MacGregor's Gown project and splitting a release with Free Porcupine Society label-mates My Cat Is An Alien. Recorded during the winter months of 2005 in Western Massachusetts, Carter and MacGregor approached the album like a long-distance, it's-in-the-mail collaboration, though in reality recording their parts across the hall from each other. Thematically,
Crystal Thicket
treads familiar ground for a Carter record: past life regressions, natural birth, growth, erosion, decay. Musically, however, there's something new going on here. Imagine '70s nostalgia, soul guitars and Studio 54. In other words, imagine Carter's first pop album."
