2008 release. Together with Hans-Peter Lindstrøm, Oslo's Prins Thomas created the climax of the on-going fascination with retro-futurism with their self-titled debut album for the Belgian Eskimo label. Thomas' own label Full Pupp has some of the best house-not-house, neo-disco or call-it-what-you-want dance music records on offer. All exclusively made by Norwegian talent, this is the first retro- or maybe even future-spective CD compilation from this style-leading imprint! Twenty-five tracks, including the label's über-hits such as Prins Thomas' "Goettsching" and Todd Terje's "Italian Stallion," taken from the much sought-after Eurodans EP, plus a selection of edited and previously-unreleased material. Both CDs feature the most complete and original selection of Oslo's class of 2008, and this sensitive selection of old and new acts such as Mental Overdrive, Ytre Rymden Dansskoola and Kalle, Magnus & Daniel finally justifies all the hype. 2009 release. This is the debut full-length release from Blackbelt Andersen aka Daniel Andersen, who has been active in the Norwegian dance music community for a number of years. He got into electronic dance music in the early '90s, and first started emulating the sound of Detroit techno on his father's home computer. In the last half of the decade, he bought his first turntables and a mixer, and was soon DJ'ing around Oslo. His first releases were on Canadian label Restructured Recordings and Prins Thomas' first label Tamburin, under the name Kalle Magnus & Daniel, a collaboration with his childhood friends Kalle Sandås and Magnus "International" Sheehan. He has enjoyed success with his releases on Full Pupp, Trailerpark and Claremont 56 and remixes for Fjordfunk and The Glimmers. He's a co-resident of the monthly Full Pupp Oslo and has also had a number of international DJ gigs from Berlin to Beijing. The Blackbelt sound can be described as Juan Atkins jamming with Airto Moreira, with a bit of Larry Levan thrown in for good measure. His first album is a prime example of the aforementioned -- a highly infectious mix of Motor City strings, slight Brazilian rhythms and arpeggiated disco bass-lines... a 70+ minute potpourri of songs blended into each other and actually turning into THE dance album of 2010. Check the incredible "Ditråit," the spine-tingling "Kuk Av Stål," the Thomas Dolby-esque "November" and the future-classic "Sandoz" as an example. It's hard not to get excited listening to this brilliant dance masterpiece.

2009 release. This is the debut album by Norway's Ytre Rymden Dansskola aka Marius Våreid and Jarle Bråthen. This pair first came to light on Lindstrøm and Prins Thomas' "Essential Mix" for BBC Radio1 and from there joined the Full Pupp family and saw their debut single for the imprint in 2007. The act name, though seemingly unpronounceable, apparently means "Outer Space Dance School," an appropriate moniker for a pair who seem to have mastered the cosmic sound of the future. A real breath of fresh air in a world of same-y electronic productions, Våreid and Bråthen themselves describe their music as "deep-sea-diving, tropical island/cosmic/space/contemporary disco," and they're right -- this is warm, engaging and slightly surreal music in every sense. From opening cut "1001 Natt" with its unexpected time signature and hypnotic analog synth-work to the dub-infused closer "Over Og Ut," there is a rich diversity here that keeps you hooked. Previous Full Pupp singles "Kjappfot" with its wondrous deep house elements and "Afterski" with its uplifting string stabs are certainly highlights, but there are no lulls in this album's sonic soundscape, with each track bringing something new and inspiring to the table. For every aspiring "nu-disco" producer out there, it would seem that there are lessons to be learned from the Outer Space Dance School.

"When Manuel Goettsching of German Krautrock luminaries Ashra Temple switched on his sequencer in 1981 and just improvised with synth and guitar for 60 minutes mainly to have some soothing sounds for his own pleasure during a plain flight, he couldn't dream that his E2-E4 would not only become one of the major single influences for Detroit techno but still influence a horde of crazy disco Norwegians to pay tribute another two decades down the line. Well, daddy don't you know that things go in circles! His royal highness Prins Thomas first tricks you onto your dancing feet with a solid percussive disco groove before wrapping your head with gentle gliding synthclouds that are reminiscent of the original's repetitive layers -- before things go too cosy he unleashes the bassline that grows into an acidic monster -- nasty. This is the first solo full-length release by Norwegian disco superstar, Prins Thomas. This album showcases Thomas's myriad musical gifts over seven sprawling, ever-evolving, head-nodding, navel-gazing, body-moving, mind-mushing tracks, perfectly assembled for an hour-long trip, almost all of it played by the man himself. Guests such as Lindstrøm lends keyboards to "Wendy Not Walter" and in conjunction with Todd Terje (on trumpet), a funky bit of clavinet on "Sauerkraut." From the shimmering, Neu!-like guitar lines of opener "Ørkenvandring," you're in for a kosmische treat. Hand-claps and a battery of percussion propel "Uggebugg" right into the groovy synth-slithers of "Slangemusikk," which fittingly translates as "snake music." More double-digit delights lie just beyond the opening tracks (including a shout-out to the mighty Wendy Carlos), but why ruin the funky and sumptuous space party that awaits your head with so many words...

Norwegian producer/DJ/remixer Marius Våreid's work covers a wide range of musical styles, from Balearic disco/house, NY garage to tropical jazz. Having worked with talents like Prins Thomas, Ray Mang, DJ Yellow, Rune Lindbaek, Bugge Wesseltoft, Pete Herbert and Ajello, Marius is always seeking out new collaborators to push his music in new directions. Marius started out as a breakdancer and a piano student, listening to Herbie Hancock and the Rock Steady Crew as well as Dizzy Gillespie and Satie. But it was the Swedish radio show "SoulCorner" with radio legend Mats Nileskjär that got Marius interested in DJing and music production. Nileskjär's shows dug deep in the history of black dance music, and always presented the newest in house, hip-hop, etc. Starting out with a Dynachord Tape Echo mixer, a Fender Rhodes Mark I and 2 turntables back in the late '80s, Marius waited a good 20 years to release his first solo album, now ready to launch from the safe havens of Prins Thomas' Full Pupp label.

You spend a year working on a track and a lazy shop worker or journalist will lump you into the 'cosmicbalearicspacewhatever' straightjacket in 2 seconds; I can at least resist doing the same. Anyway, two are quite psychedelic and one is some kind of cover version of one of my favourite Villalobos trax. Per unleashed this on us at one of the Full Pupp nights in Oslo and recently we saw how it took the roof off at Fabric. Another debut on Full Pupp, Henning Severud is Telephones hailing from Bergen but recently relocated to Berlin. He makes the kind of uplifing melodic disco most people would tag as something silly like "Balearic beach house" -- yes, it's pretty Balearic (it does remind of Nik Kershaw in places) and we're dancing around like happy little girls to his cool contemporary disco. As a special treat, Prins Thomas regurgitates the track with a little gastric acid -- yuck!
