German TV recordings from 1970, taken from the station's masters. Xhol Caravan were from Wiesbaden. "In the beginning of 1969 they emerged from Soul Caravan, their predecessors. Xhol Caravan's music was a peculiar mix of jazz and psychedelia. In 1970 they shortened their name to Xhol as to not be confused with Caravan from England. In recording their pieces for SWF (a public radio and TV station from Baden-Baden) in 1970, they were filmed playing four long songs. The colour TV had been introduced in Germany only three years before, in 1967. Thus, light effects were used in abundance, especially psychedelic effects. "Tetragon, successor of Trikolon, were founded in Osnabrueck (Lower Saxony) in the spring of 1971. They released their first and only LP, Nature, in that very year. It came out as CD on Musea in 1995. At the end of 1971, Tetragon recorded in a Hamburg studio five long tracks in their well-proven style for their second LP, the release of which, however, failed. Fortunately, the master tape has survived until the present day, so that now, 39 years past schedule, the work was released on LP. Three of the five songs have been written by the band itself, one by Eddie Harris ('Listen here') and one by John McLaughlin ('Dragon song'). The two latter ones had already been interpreted by Brian Auger. Especially remarkable are Hendrik Schaper's exceptional play on keyboards and Juergen Jaehner's hot guitar play. The other two, however, are their equals in skill and talent. The LP edition is a limited edition of 1000 numbered copies and comes with a four-page colour insert in LP size, including a detailed band history in German and in English language, band photographs, discography with cover and label repros etc."

"Sündenfall II from the Kevelaer area at the Lower Rhine played a mixture of folk and jazz, influenced by Jethro Tull. While their predecessors, Sündenfall, exclusively dedicated themselves to jazz, the group included folk after a change in line-up and band name (following the example of Amon Duul II). In 1972, Hubert Schmitz invited the band into his Trepitia film and sound studio in Alpen-Druept for free recordings, as he wanted to test the newly installed equipment after a recent move into the new location. Thus the recordings were made for the album Sündenfall II (Trefiton HS 1017), which was released in a small edition of 200 copies at the end of 1972. Today it is sold at a price of about 500 to 1000 Euros in mint condition. The LP re-issue is a limited edition of 1000 numbered copies and comes with a four-page color insert in LP size, including a detailed band history in German and in English language, many band photographs, and information about the Trefiton label etc."

"The Saarland band Gäa played German-language progressive rock. Their band name derives from the ancient Greek gods, where Gaia (Latin notation: Gäa) is the goddess of the earth and fertility. The group's only LP, Auf der Bahn zum Uranus, was a short run released on the Kerston label in 1974 and is today sold at about 600 euros. It is a mature and well-balanced album, the artistic value of which long remained undiscovered. The tasteful cover was designed by Eduard Bell, the brother of Gäa bassist Peter Bell. There were several re-issues of the album -- LPs as well as CDs -- but unfortunately not all of them legitimate. The LP on Garden of Delights is provided with a four-page colored insert in LP size offering a detailed band history in German and English, complete discography, label repros, many photographs, and a Kerston story."

"Langsyne from Barmen (Bergisches Land region) played a subtle kind of psych-folk with a wide range of partly unusual, exotic, and medieval instruments: sitar, psaltery, koto, glockenspiel, flute, etc. Especially remarkable is the instinctive assurance with which the three musicians, who understood each other without words, played their music together. Their only LP was released as a very small edition of only 200 copies in 1976. It is today the second most expensive Deutschrock LP (after the first edition of Can's Monster Movie), sold amongst collectors at more than 1000 euros. "One of the very best records on Garden of Delights, if not the best one in general. Purely psychedelic music. There are no weak parts on the album at all. Only impressive songs played by talented musicians, recorded professionally, and taken from the master tapes. Everything fits together quite perfectly. Fans of early Pink Floyd will thoroughly enjoy the LP. Its style is reminiscent of the late 1960s. All songs, except for the rather catchy 'Lory,' are very mysterious and reveal their real beauty only after being listened to several times. It's a shame that Lightshine from Emmerich have not released any further material. The one at hand is an aural pleasure from the first to the very last tone. The original LP was released on the Trefiton label in 1976. "Underground at its very best, recorded in the summer of 1970, and released in 1971 as a small edition (Help ZSLH 55023), so that the original LP is today traded at approximately 1,000 euros. The tapes were recorded very accurately in the well-known Munich Union-Studios by five top musicians and have been preserved undamaged to this day. Why the title Sub in Concert for a studio LP? The reason is quite simple: applause was added to the first track in order to create a live atmosphere. Highlight of the record is probably the rather intoxicating 'Match I.' The other songs, however, are convincing as well, e. g. the long 'Sub Theme I (Sub in Concert),' and the tranquil 'Sub Theme II (Money Maker).' It's one of the best LPs of this series. The new vinyl edition is limited to 1,000 copies, has been numbered individually, and contains two bonus tracks as well as a four-page color insert in LP size."

"After the break-up of the first Gila line-up and Conny Veit's move from Stuttgart to Munich, the latter founded a new band, retaining the old name. Instead of their former lengthy improvisations, their tracks were now tightly arranged. Their only album, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, which was inspired by Dee Brown's book of the same title and deals with the expulsion and extermination of native North Americans, features three American Indian lyrics (translated into English) and received good reviews without exception. The LP was released in 1973 on WEA/Warner Bros., while in 1995 a really bad bootleg CD was released by Germanofon, and in 2012 a bootleg LP on blue vinyl. On all these records the tracks are mistakenly in the wrong order. This has been corrected now. The vinyl re-issue is limited and numbered and comes with a four-page insert in LP size."

"A rather organ-oriented record -- the keyboardist being a real achiever. The work is characterized by its long instrumental passages. There is unfortunately a certain audible tape noise -- the studio then left a lot to be desired. The band was founded in Speyer on the Upper Rhine in 1969 and released only this single LP. In 1972 all of 200 copies were produced, half of which were destroyed during a fire in the music store Markus. The original in mint condition is today thus traded at about 2,000 euros. Therefore, the record is -- together with the Langsyne LP and the first edition of Can's Monster Movie -- one of the three most expensive collectors' items in the field of Deutschrock. "Missus Beastly from Herford were among the most famous German psychedelic and jazz-rock bands, with the most confusing history of all of them. Their first LP released on CPM in 1970 - without any title, just like the second LP in 1974 - had a beautiful red cover artwork and is traded today at around 1000 euros. A certain Henry C. From(m), pretending to be the band's manager, flutist, and drummer, arranged for a re-issue, which was released under the title of Nara asst incense (OPP 5-32) with the same tracks in a different order and with a totally new cover artwork. When no legal action was taken against him, this man had the cheek to embark on further fraudulent ventures by recording another two LPs and releasing them under the stolen name of Missus Beastly. On top of that, a bootleg CD of Nara asst incense was released by Germanofon. The vinyl edition on Garden of Delights comes in the original red gatefold cover and with four-page insert in LP size."

1996 CD reissue of this German album, originally issued as a private press by the band in 1975. Named after a book by Clark Ashton Smith, the concept of pronouncing their name is an acquired taste. Much easier is listening to their music, and odd and primitive mixture of mid-70s underground styles. This CD is from master tapes, with 4 bonus tracks. "Ejwuusl Wessahqqan were a Munich band acquainted with Amon Düül II whose style is vary similar to theirs. Firmly structured songs were the exception amongst broad improvisations combining spontaneous musical ideas. A special characteristic of their style is the absence of vocals and guitar which was replaced by the self-made seven string filouphone. The highlight of the CD is the outstanding, highly psychedelic bonus track 'The Crystal' by the follow-up band Koala-Bär."

"On 2/2/74, Agitation Free performed a good gig at the WDR radio station in Cologne which was broadcast live, featuring the old line up (Ulbrich, Lütjens, Günther, Hoenig & Rausch). It was released as a bootleg LP under the title At Last...Is Alive (Pupil Tulip 1) in 1995, but is shamefully bad in recording quality. In addition, the titles of the songs are false and their chronological order reversed. It just goes to show that a collector should keep away from such illegal trash and better wait patiently for the authorized releases. This CD on hand now presents a flawless recording of the gig, remastered at Michael Hoenig's studio." Rather ecstatic flowing jams from this legendary band. A full 20 years before the full-blown development of Heroin House, these guys were obviously tied into something quite, um, good. And if you've already devoured Malesch, 2nd and Last, you're ready for it.

Legit issue of this fabulous German folk-stoner, originally privately pressed LP in 1970. We used to carry this on the now (thankfully) defunct and rather outrageously priced Lost Pipe Dreams label (one of the most nightmarishly-plagued operations we've ever had the "pleasure" of dealing with, and that's saying something) but this new version adds legitimate master tape sound, 2 bonus tracks (from the extremely rare Release compilation as well as their 7" -- of which only 1 copy was made!), and a full booklet of notes and photos. Siloah were Manuel (percussions, tambourine), Tiny (vocals, shinai), Thom, (acoustic guitar, 12-string guitar, vocals) and Wolfgang (bass). The track listing is classic and worth repeating: "Yellow Puppets Hanging In The Sky," "Krishna's Golden Dope Shop," "Road To Laramy," "Acid Eagle," "Aluminum Wind," & "Pink Puppets Hanging In The Sky". Devastatingly loose and vibed up, the two Siloah albums are amongst the most cracked of all early 70s German output (their 2nd, Sukram Gurk is coming soon). Psychedelic commune folk doesn't get any better than this and it's great to have these back in these new, superior editions.

"On 02/26/1972, Gila played a gig in Cologne that was broadcast line the in 'Nachtmusik' WDR radio show. Since the WDR had only acquired the broadcasting rights whereas the publishing rights are owned by the artists, nothing stood in the way of this CD release. Thanks to the latest technology the recording, which does not entirely satisfy the demands of today's listeners, has been most carefully dehissed and remastered but not changed. Happily, all tracks are as yet unknown. Their sound is reminiscent of the first Gila LP and they are its equal in every way." As with the Gila CD on this label, this is a previously unreleased WDR radio broadcast, from 10/18/72. An art-inspired jazz-rock group, often compared to the Soft Machine, who recorded two albums for Philips in 1971-72. From Crack In The Cosmic Egg: "One of the great, but little known, wonders of Krautrock, originating from Stuttgart we believe, Eiliff on their two LPs developed a most unique style of powerful rock fusion. Eiliff destroyed barriers between rock, jazz and established progressive genres, with lengthy intensive compositions that twist and turn with startling complexity, or riff with amazing power and stability. In their unique concoction songs were rarely used, and only then to counterpoint the instrumentals, and when necessary get over an idea that couldn't be achieved without words. They had the power of Mahavishnu Orchestra, the invention of Guru Guru, the diversity of Out Of Focus, and really they were purely excessive, with diverse elements blended together as only experienced in Krautrock."

First reissue of the debut album from 1971 by this German progressive rock group (the title is in reference to an album their previous incarnation, the Royal Servants). Notable as one of the first bands from this scene to sing in native German, parts of this could be comparable to Necronomicon. The hard-to-forget cover illustration features a picture of a chicken standing in a frying pan -- in the seventies things like this were called "outrageous". "It offered a typically German progressive blend, drawing equally from heavy rock, folk, jazz and classical. The six tracks were cleverly arranged, with rich instrumentation and sudden shifts of tempo." -- Dag Erik Asbjornsen.

"Second album by this semi-legendary Krautrock group from 1972, following their classic debut 2. Typically, an unusual amount of care was put into this reissue by the people at Garden of Delights: excellent sound, seven extra tracks and almost more information about the group than one could want, rendering another Germanofon bootleg obsolete. For their sophomore effort, we see Eulenspygel sticking to their creative guns, still singing all of there songs in German, and not bending over to their record company by quashing their decidedly leftist leanings, probably no mean feat at the height of Baader-Meinhof hysteria. The opening track demonstrates this fact most pointedly; Titled 'Abfall', this rock opera of sorts clocks in at over 22 minutes, and concerns an orphan named Peter -- the group went so far as to visit a number of orphanages to research the material first hand. Their style was a mix of early Deep Purple and Arthur Brown on one side of the channel and perhaps Witthuser & Westrupp from their native country on the other. More exotic instrumentation than the predecessor, courtesy of Rod Argent(!) at Abbey Road studios where this was more than competently recorded, and the interesting mix of Teutonic folk and blues-based rock make this a fine listen from top to bottom." -- Billy Kiely

First legit CD reissue of the legendary first Xhol album, first issued on Hansa in 1969. This was their first of 3 albums, Hau-Ruk and Motherfuckers GmbH & Co. would follow on the OHR label in '71/'72, concluding one of the strangest chapters in the Krautrock scene of this period. Electrip has freak-out characteristics, some Canterbury-esque vibes and stoned-progressive moves throughout long instrumental passages. The first mysterious record by this band who would always leave a trail of confusion. From Crack In The Cosmic Egg: "Electrip was one hell of a remarkable album, especially for the 60s, an electric sax and organ fronted fusion with a great deal of invention and energy, hinting at later records by Nosferatu, Faust, et al. Remarkable throughout!"

Gila founder Conny Veit had. left the group to work with Popol Vuh on a masterful trio of albums (Hosianna Mantra/Aguirre/Seligreisungun,) but resurrected the Gila name for this record, recorded in conjunction with Popol Vuh's Florian Fricke (Mellotron, grand piano) and Daniel Fichelscher (drums, perc., bass). Sabine Merbach contributed an ethereal vocal presence. The result is much more similar to Popol Vuh's more majestic psych moments, but based around Veit's compositions (he performs on acoustic/elec. guitar, Moog, flute). A concept album dealing with the oppression of American Indians (based on texts by Dee Brown), this is a floatational classic. Typical elaborate Garden Of Delights packaging, with extensive Gila-reflective liner notes by Conny Veit. One previously unreleased (but unremarkable) studio track is added as well.

First ever release by this obscure commune band from Stuttgart. They were known for their long instrumental-oriented jam tracks, influenced by Cream and Jimi Hendrix. Signed by the OHR label in 1971, they were unable to complete studio recordings and broke up before ever finishing an album. This CD collects the best material from over 20 hours of available jam sessions and rehearsal tapes. A quartet, with guitar/bass/drums augmented by a fourth member on sax/flute/okkarini/oboe. Freeform improvisational ballroom elements abound and if you approve of phrases like "endless stoned jamming", you might want to fall in line.

"Erlkoenig, named after the famous Goethe poem and originating in Helmstedt on the former inner-German border, played powerful and inventive symphonic rock with occasional lyrics in English. Keyboarder Eckhardt Freynik, author of all the tracks, was the creative head of the band, and one would wish that he had received more recognition for his work as it seems that the world has lost an incredibly gifted musician. The guitar is also highly remarkable. Erlkoenig's only LP appeared in early 1973 with a circulation of 1000 copies and is basically known to collectors only. "Rather good art rock. Galaxy from Bremen were not rediscovered until the late 1990s and are relatively unknown among collectors, which is no surprise as their only LP "Visions" of 1978 had a circulation of only 500 copies. Even during their "lifetime" they led a lonely wallflower existence in their hometown with just about 10 to 15 gigs. This is totally unjustified as their record is more than just good and sheer pleasure for the listener, except for the rather silly 'Consequences.' Certain Hawkwind quotations and a touch of art rock are the ingredients of a harmonious achievement. The lyrics are mostly taken from the world of science fiction, which explains the name of the band, the LP title and the cover artwork, a sort of alienated Milky Way. The fact that a band from Oberursel has the same name, is purely co-incidental. With colour booklet of 32 pages."

Previously bootlegged in poor fashion by Germanofon, this comes with one 22-minute bonus track (from 1974) and the usual thick booklet of liner notes and photos by Garden of Delights. This album followed Electrip and precedes Motherfuckers GMBH. One of the more confounding pieces of the Krautrock puzzle, Xhol played long, wasted lounge-blues excursions, much favored by the likes of Steven Stapleton and friends. "Trikolon were a very gifted trio from Osnabrück. As precursor of Tetragon, they played a very varied progressive rock. They even were influenced by classic and blues. Their only LP Cluster was already released in 1969. It was edited by themselves in a number of 150 copies. Thus it had been one of the most earliest works of this kind. Correspondingly modest were the means with which it was recorded, and here lies its only weak point. But whoever, for example, is listening to 'Blue Rondo à la Turk,' will be excited about the true firework performed on organ, accompanied by racing drums. Hendrik Schaper on keyboards, the creative element of the band, performs brilliantly. As well do Ralf Schmieding on drums and Rolf Rettberg on bass -- the latter nowadays a professor of music in Berlin. The bonus track of 22 minutes was recorded live."
