Conquering Animal Sound hail from Glasgow, Scotland (having recently departed their home in Edinburgh) and comprise of Anneke Kampman and James Scott. This is their debut full-length album for Gizeh Records. The duo formed in 2009 and were soon making waves in the fine city of Edinburgh. A host of labels came knocking and subsequently a split 7" single (featuring the song "Giant") with Debutant was released via Gerry Loves Records in May 2010 and agreements were put in place with Gizeh and mini50 Records to release Kammerspiel. Live, the duo perform the majority of what you hear on record -- it is something of awe-inspiring greatness, creating loops, beats and samples out of anything and everything with Anneke's sumptuous vocals carrying the sounds to what seems like a new world. In 2010, Conquering Animal Sound took to the road for their first UK tour, performed at Wickerman Festival (Scotland), De Affaire (Netherlands) and played shows with the likes of Tunng and Zola Jesus. Kammerspiel is essentially pop music, but in the way the likes of Fever Ray or Björk portray pop music. Where Conquering Animal Sound differ is in their love for tape-hiss and children's toys. There is no doubt, with this record they are in a world of their own.

This is Sleepingdog's third album after Naked In A Clean Bed and the critically-acclaimed Polar Life. Once upon a time in the days of the Belgian Franc, Chantal Acda made the acquaintance Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie, and the two became fast friends through a mutual love of disco bowling, and 1970s Danish scary movies. They first collaborated on vocals on the infamous last track "The Struggle" on Mr. Wiltzie's 2004 The Dead Texan. Now, over the course of 10 years, this strange friendship has slowly developed into a musical collaboration which at this point is a rarity for Mr. Wiltzie, because of his notorious slow-burning output for his legendary project Stars Of The Lid. For With Our Heads In The Clouds And Our Hearts In The Fields, these two have somehow gone back in time to capture the sound of glacial-moving, dark cough syrup pop music. Mr. Wiltzie has manipulated his trademark haunting ambience, deconstructing and funneling it through the beautiful voice and song compositions of Chantal Acda. Together, Sleepingdog have gently abducted these gaseous tones and choruses of Pacific tree frogs into some beautifully-crafted, melancholic orchestration that reminds us all that we exist in a world of strangers, drifting only two feet apart.

The band's richly-arranged songs seek out subtle and luminous climaxes, the hypnotically simple melodies falling away like scaffolding to reveal a complex structure narrated by a haunted voice drumming out a dark poetry, echoes from a deep well. A music related concept by Richard Knox and Frédéric D. Oberland. 450 km from the Arctic Circle, The Rustle Of The Stars is a phenomenon of austere beauty, a barely audible noise that occurs when the draught from human breath causes multiple collisions among the ice micro-crystals in the air. Some words from Richard & Frederic: "We met on tour when performing in Europe with our respective bands Glissando and FareWell Poetry. We had beautiful times, drinking and talking our common grounds while some simple ideas formed in our minds: to compose an album together. To imagine a musical passage through the North Pole explorer diaries. To ask some people and some friends to participate. To record the project in a church. To act quickly. We began to work at our homes in November 2010, in Paris (FR) and in Leeds (UK), with electric guitars, a bunch of pedals, piano, dulcimer, organ, crystal glasses, bows and field recordings, sending and adding ideas together to the tracks, trying to find a global organic sound. We met in Leeds two months later at the beginning of 2011 to record in the St. Margaret of Antioch Church, using a 'wall of sound' process in some of the tracks and arranging/recording the string parts you will hear in the music. We would like to think of this album as a polar journey to the ends of the earth through the Arctic Sea. We kept in mind the first polar expeditions, Edgar Allan Poe's 'Dream-Land,' the ships trapped or crushed by ice, the point of no return, the minds sinking, the attempt on the Pole ending in disaster, the quest of the Northwest Passage, Erebus & Terror, the Mercy Bay, Mangazeya, Charles Francis Hall, Beechey Island, the midnight sun and the polar night."

A-Sun Amissa is a new project formed out of Leeds, UK by members of Glissando. Built on the foundations of the unknown, this is a project that encompasses minimalist drones, modern-classical movements and avant-garde tendencies. Richard Knox (Glissando, Of Thread & Mist, The Rustle Of The Stars) & Angela Chan (Glissando, Ten, The Rustle Of The Stars, Tomorrow We Sail) began forming the initial ideas in the Autumn of 2011, moving away from the piano-led ambience of previous outputs. Long-time friend Owen Pegg was soon invited to join the project as the pieces developed to enable the songs the depth and intensity they required. The trio produce a dense, drone-like atmosphere accompanying evocative, melodic string sections and intertwining guitars. The live show features sections of the recorded output combined with improvisation to unlock new movements and progressions in the music. The subtle, considered textures and the hypnotic interaction between players and instruments provide an absorbing and intense live performance. October 2011 saw the first recorded output in the form of a 3" CD release as part of Hibernate Recordings' acclaimed "postcard" series. The release Beneath The Heavy Tides featured two tracks and serves as a prelude to Desperate In Her Heavy Sleep.

Mere is a new project that began as a soundtrack and continues as an experimental, dark-ambient jazz group. Guitar, drums and bass clarinet provide an intense and improvised journey into the abyss. The trio first came together to work on a soundtrack for a Dutch TV documentary called Visserman. Having known each other for some time, this was the first time they had combined together to write music and the name Mere comes from the Dutch word for "more." Each member adds a different influence to the sound -- the modal finger-picked guitar playing by Thomas adds a sense of movement while Gareth takes both folk and free jazz ideas to play against Leo's free rock-influenced drum work. The tracks were recorded all in single takes with just a quick discussion of outline and tuning as a basic guide

This album from Fieldhead continues the dusty, bereft sounds of previous releases They Shook Hands for Hours (Home Assembly, 2009) and Riser (Gizeh, 2010). 2010 saw Paul Elam depart the UK for Vancouver, Canada and there is no doubt that the vast Northern Canadian landscapes have influenced the new Fieldhead material. The familiar tape-hiss and scratchy, decaying atmospheres remain in place, but with A Correction, Elam has managed to sculpt a vaster, more expansive palate of sounds. Minimalistic on first listen, A Correction is a record which slowly unfurls on multiple listens to reveal subtle melodies and details that don't distract from the overall ambience, but in fact, set apart Fieldhead's music from many other, safer artists within the genre. The violin of Elaine Reynolds (The Boats/The Sea) adds a warmth to the sometimes desolate atmospheres and the almost constant pulse that remains throughout the record invites you to be lost for the duration and even hints at a more minimal techno direction at times. Previous comparisons of Fieldhead's work have been made to the likes of William Basinski, The Caretaker and Grouper, which, in truth, are not far from the mark. It's fair to say Elam has already stamped his name in the ambient/drone field with his previous outputs and A Correction should further enhance his reputation as someone who can seamlessly marry soundscapes and melody to form an enchanting, almost timeless piece of music. Epic swells of strings and guitars soar above the drones and field recordings to create an intense yet fragile noise. The dynamics of the new record are also apparent and through the use of an array of guests there is a new depth and ambition to Glissando that portrays the songs in their truest form. The World Without Us moves slowly between dark shadows and into more hopeful territory throughout -- it's not afraid to be silent when the moment arrives but it's also capable of enormous, echoing, choral and string crescendos in one subtle movement. Since Glissando's debut in 2008, Elly May Irving and Richard Knox have experimented with countless different live set-ups and members ranging from simple, more immediate shows as a duo through to a seven-piece group. Never tied to a specific ideal of how to play the material, it enabled the group to tour heavily for a couple of years in the UK and Europe while recording a follow-up album, but inevitably this process took it toll. In May 2012 Irving and Knox finally completed the record they had been tentatively working on for four years and the final stages came together relatively quickly. Knox produced and pre-mixed the record in his own Cloud Blunt Moon studio in Leeds before heading to Paris to complete the final mixing session with Frederic D. Oberland at his Magnum Diva studio. The material on The World Without Us stretches back the full four years with the likes of "The Long Lost" and "Of Silence," which were previously featured on a highly limited edition, double-A-side single. The title-track is also an older song which has been morphed and reworked over the years. The two tracks were conceived initially as two drone guitar pieces -- following that, work was done on the composition and atmosphere of the tracks, adding the bass-clarinet, viola, vocals, field recordings and piano. The finished works produce an unsettling but hypnotic listen, with melodies moving in and out of the mix throughout these two pieces. Limited edition of 300 vinyl-only copies. Includes mp3 download.
