Artist: PLEATED LEMON
Title: Surefire Hit
Label: HAND ON THE PLOW (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: HOTP 004EP
"Coming from the twisted minds of Spandex and the mysterious Richard Dytch is this latest plate from the recently resurrected Hand on the Plow label, a 12" somehow destined to be a huge pop hit even if we do say so ourselves. Beginning with the future playground anthem 'Cocks and Fannies' we're instantly catapulted into the surreal world of Pleated Lemon. This is a track that has already been described by some as sounding like 'As if Charlie Brooker had given up journalism and turned to a career in music' (although the duo would rather have you reference Spike Milligan), so if that makes any sense to you at all then you're probably interested already. A campfire pseudo-salsa sing-along flecked with electronic production twists, we would put money on this being the oddest collision of sounds you've heard this year. The fun doesn't stop here though, oh no -- side A is wrapped up by the future dancefloor (umm...) smash Carl Cox and Friends, which as you can imagine is a tribute to the said DJ megastar. Somewhere inbetween 'Zorba the Greek' and 'Now That's What I Call Music 22', we have witnessed the birth of a new genre, we just don't know what it's called yet. We are well aware that some of you are looking for music that's just that little bit left of centre, and thank goodness we have Pleated Lemon to kick us about as far left as our bodies will let us before we soil ourselves."

Artist: SPANDEX
Title: Whats Wrong With You
Label: HAND ON THE PLOW (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: HOTP 005EP
"Continuing from his latest success on Cristian Vogel's Sleep Debt label, Spandex dusts off his glad rags and once again pimps his wares for Hand on the Plow. Spandex has a knack of turning lazy mumbling into the funkiest dancefloor tracks out there. 'Whats Wrong With You' does this brilliantly with burbling soul and stuttered blues funk, all wrapped up in his skintight production secrets. This is house music for the educated tart. Spandex manages to squeeze so much slutty funk into this one track that it is at risk of overflowing at times. Get your cups out. 'Marauding' concludes the A-side with an elastic twang of electro funk. More neurotic than his more familiar 'dancing tramp' sound, this track shows that Spandex is comfortable in more than one style. He's comfortable in two. 'Too Tight' begins and ends the B-side with a knickerless twopenny whore of a techno track."
