Hench Mixtape Vol. 1
Label:
HENCH (UK)
Format:
CD
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
HENCH 001CD
"Having masterfully mixed the
Hench Mixtape Vol. 1
, Jakes introduces several of his unreleased works into the label showcase. Featuring VIP's of many of his previously released tracks, the mix offers something new even for the hardiest of Hench fans. Providing a platform for both established artists as well as those who are less familiar amongst the scene's heads -- one of the mix's defining accomplishments is the uniformity in standard of production. Komonazmuk has also made a stunning tune to lend to the mix ('You Fo''). Giant's hugely successful 'Swoosh' and a VIP of 'Drumstick,' along with VIP's of Eddie K's debut 12" on the label also feature. Tracks from the unmistakable Chasing Shadows and Lost are dropped into the mix, which will only add to the splash that these young producers are currently creating in the music scene. Expect to take notice of Hench's signing, Mensah -- currently the talk of Bristol after having his production featured in TV series
CSI
, and having productions lined up for future releases on Jakes' label. Tek-One has also been making a big impact, and Hench were lucky to pick up 'Broken String' -- surely a future classic. Young-gun producer Minus adds flavour to the mix with his debut release, 'Nails.'
Hench Mixtape Vol. 1
provides an accurate snapshot of the accomplishments of Jakes and his label to date. With such established and rising stars cued to make further releases on the label, Hench will continue to remain at the forefront of the boundary pushing dubstep scene."

3Kout/2 Steps Back
Label:
HENCH (UK)
Format:

Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
HENCH 001EP
"Re-released due to demand. The first release on the now well-established Bristol dubstep label, Hench, it was fitting that the debut 12" came from Papa 'Ench himself, Jakes. Now known as the launch-pad for such artists as Komonazmuk & Chasing Shadows, the Hench label is strongly responsible for the rapid growth of the dubstep scene. And with genre-shaking releases like Jakes'
Rock Tha Bells
and
Warface
, there's no doubt that this label is going from strength to strength. Having already dropped a seriously well received remix of Martin Buttrich's 'Well Done' on 420 Recordings that went straight to Number One in the Dubstep Chart, Jakes followed up with two of his very own productions for Hench's debut release. '3Kout' is pure Bristolian dubstep with deep resonant subs alongside the unique bass sound now associated with Hench. This tune is instantly recognizable and quickly received support from Mary Ann Hobbs (Radio 1), Chef, Pinch, Oris Jay and Skream to name a few. According to N-Type
''3Kout' is one of the biggest tunes on road right now -- it mashes up any dance. It sounds like some mad generator starting up, moving into a full furious skank out!'
'2 Steps Back' is another classic Jakes production. It's an extension of the sound that Jakes stumbled upon when making '3Kout.' You can hear Jakes' unique sound developing throughout the track. This tune is a tried and tested weapon to have the dancefloor nodding heads in time with those wonky bass rhythms."

Price:

Catalog #:
HENCH 002EP
"Stepping up once more on his own Hench label comes Bristol's very own Godfather of dubstep, Jakes. Following the massive success of
3kout
and
2 Steps Back
, a release that was battered on road by everyone from Mary Anne Hobbs and Oris Jay to Chef and Skream! 'Titan Dub' is just that, a literal gargantuan of a track complete with massive slabs of distorted bass, spacious drum smacks and horror movie string samples that all intersperse and mingle perfectly to create a stunning sense of tension that will have the crowd bubbling on hits of pure paranoia. 'Warp 9' takes no prisoners either, blending warbling bass burps and select atmospheric touches that add to the anxious aesthetic of this release and proves once again that Jakes has what it takes to set the dancefloors of dubstep alight."

Bad Apple/Last Mistake
Label:
HENCH (UK)
Format:

Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
HENCH 003EP
"Following the massive successes of Hench001 and Hench002, the godfather of Bristol dubstep moves aside for the third release on his Hench imprint; this time around Jakes gives the floor to one of the hottest producers on the circuit: Komonazmuk. 'Bad Apple' displays perfectly what is so exciting about the dubstep movement right now, combining elements that wouldn't be out of place in a minimal techno track and adding subtle flourishes that will strike a chord with Hench's growing army of fans. Simply stunning. 'Last Mistake' goes for a more straight-up dubstep feel with skipping beats and echoed atmospherics that build a cinematic edge to another beautifully minimal track. Komonazmuk is clearly a dangerous man."

HENCH 004EP
"Continuing his cross-scene pollination Jakes hits us with the fourth installment of the Hench saga. Considered to be the daddy of the Bristolian dubstep scene, he gets big stinkin' nasty with this one. Turn it up! This joint release between Hench and Plastician's Terrorhythm label brings together two previously released heavyweight tracks, namely '3kout' by Jakes and 'Gullybrook Lane' by Joker, to create a killer VIP hybrid track '3klane' : Introing with the trademark Sega soundtrack of Joker we're then treated to the dirty drop of Jakes' mid-range jelly bass to get your rudeboy skank firmly on to. A party favourite, you need this! Flip over and Jakes goes solo on 'Modem,' a firing excursion of gnarly bass surges and indeed modem samples scattered throughout. Watch out for the sub on this one, it'll make your face wince! Healthy dollops of FX and a constantly evolving b-line make this the perfect end to a filthy 12". Big support from N-Type, Hatcha, Scratch Perverts, Youngsta, Pinch, Peverelist, Headhunter amongst others."

Price:

Catalog #:
HENCH 005EP
"Hot on the heels of the blazing
3klane
comes release number five, a rather tasty cut from another of the Hench family, Komonazmuk. 'Night At Deluxe' springs into action after a DJ-friendly intro to take us on a journey aimed at the deeper dubstepper. A cool as hell see-saw bass acts as the backbone as syncopated key stabs funk it up and spoken vocal snippets hover in the background with a bit of spooky sax to create a full-on air of mystery. A sublime track with awesome production values. Beautiful pads, twinkly keys and morphed vocals combine at the start of 'Miss Her' giving rise to a rich sun-drenched soundscape but don't let it fool you, a storm is coming. A gentle tease and then the full blown tech bass-attack ensues with heavy kicks and sub driving it forwards. The pads return to provide a breather but the firing b-line just won't quit, making this a dancefloor smasher! Big support from Oris Jay, Skream, Scratch Perverts, N Type, Plastician, Mary Anne Hobbs and more."

from Jakes and Komonazmuk causing mayhem in the dubstep world. Coming into 2009, we have snapped up two tunes from emerging producers Chasing Shadows who have already caused a splash with their Damien Marley inspired track 'It Was Written.' 'Dr Sin' and 'The End' are exquisite pieces of dark, moody, cinematic dubstep with grinding electronic style synth bass. Both tunes have received heavy support from Plastician, Mary Anne Hobbs, N-Type & Benga."

The Jakes Project: Vol. 2
Label:
HENCH (UK)
Format:
12"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
HENCH 007EP
"The second volume in The Jakes Project series, this 12" takes dubstep to a whole new level. Following the burgeoning success of the H.E.N.C.H imprint and widespread support from across the board, this is the label's 7th release so far, with more to follow from The Jakes Project as well as an album featuring exclusive bonus tracks and mixes. With ear-punishing bass lines, ridiculously heavy subs and his signature big, bouncy style, renowned for tearing dancefloors to pieces., Jakes is a man on a mission. If this is anything to go by then dubstep is set to take over the world! 'A.Rock Tha Bells': Taking the industry by storm, 'Rock Tha Bells' has already captured the imagination of Rusko, featuring on his Radio 1
Essential Mix
and was championed by Skream on his infamous
Stella Sessions
. Kicking off one of the heaviest dubstep tunes ever produced with heavy rock-infused stabbing beats and a deep, dark bassline, this is a far cry from the minimalist dubstep movement, and is guaranteed to get your screwface on! With an intermittent threatening bell loop overlaid on a relentlessly stomping bassline, Jakes just keeps us guessing. Slamming tune, stunning production value -- it doesn't get much better than this! AA. 'Warface': Or does it? On the flip, Jakes whips out the big guns and the heavy artillery with a savage mastery, straight from the front lines! With the classic Kubrick war-movie sample,
'Sir, you gotta warface? Let me see your warface!,'
this is destined to be one of 2009's hottest tunes. Guaranteed to go down a treat with the gun-fingered, dubstep-saluting brigade, the wobbly b-line, pummeling subs and iconic cries will massacre crowds all over the place. Let me see your gun fingers: dubstep soldiers unite! Again, widespread support from across the scene, with play outs from Benga, N-Type, Hatcha, Joker and anyone else who's managed to get their hands on a copy!"

The Jakes Project: Vol. 4
Label:
HENCH (UK)
Format:
12"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
HENCH 008EP
"The fourth volume in The Jakes Project series, this 12" is where it's at, with two almighty stormers, 'Custard Cream' and 'In Tha Place To Be'; these tunes are the kind of tunes that explain why dubstep's big -- join the revolution, and you won't look back! With plenty more in the pipeline for 2009, we can expect more great things from Jakes and his H.E.N.C.H crew in the future. A. 'Custard Cream' -- With a suitably wobbly b-line, pulsating drum loop and screeching synths, this has all the elements of a slamming dubstep tune. Warping into the drop with earth-shattering subs that will shake you right to the core, Jakes knows exactly what he's doing here. God knows why it's called 'Custard Cream.' But with a b-line that heavy, who cares?! This tune really takes the biscuit -- it's going to be BIG, and it's going to destroy rigs across the country with its subterranean levels of bass. Another piece of chunky badness you can really get your teeth into from Jakes -- heavy is just not the word! AA. 'In Tha Place To Be' -- Next up, with a heavy hip hop influence and vocal sampling from Run DMC --
'1,2, 3 in tha place to be'
-- we begin another sonic journey into the depths of one of dubstep's finest new tunes. The echoey bad-boy lyrics are chopped up and flipped over on their head as they merge into a shuddering b-line and the reverberating dubstep mayhem continues. This tune will simply leave you calling out for a rewind! Coming to a soundsystem near you soon."

Who's The Hardest?/The Shivers
Label:
HENCH (UK)
Format:
12"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
HENCH 009EP
"Introducing the first 12" from Eddie K on the Hench imprint -- two chunky slabs of dubstep are in order from this young, talented Bristol-based producer -- this 12" is already a big favourite of Caspa and where this man leads, everyone else follows, so enjoy, and expect more big things from Eddie K in the coming months. First up, staying true to his D&B roots, Eddie K brings us some fresh, fruity jungle flavours, with 'Who's The Hardest.' With a ragga vocal sample and repeated clicking of a trigger in the background -- get your gun-fingers ready for this one, dubstep soldiers -- as the tune smashes into the drop with some heavy bassline action and hard-hitting beats. Bringing the jungle influences into the dubstep sphere, 'Who's The Hardest' has a very strong presence about it -- so, beware cowards! Flip over, for something a little more serious that will definitely give you 'The Shivers.' Kicking off with a bold, brash opening, orchestral strings, and booming beat, the Dr Who-style synth lead, and faded ominous vocal sampling, are spooky and atmospheric. The tune almost twists into the drop with a sudden drum roll spasm, and, as the sci-fi vocal sample repeats, 'this is a journey into music and sound.' With a pounding beat and classic sci-fi effects, 'The Shivers' is a fantastic piece of badness. Already a favourite of Caspa's, as well as big support by other big dubstep players, including: Plastician, N Type, Hatcha and Rossi B, get hold of this as soon as you can -- it's going to be a massive hit."

Label:
HENCH (UK)
Format:

Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
HENCH 010EP
"Marking the tenth release on Hench, enter production trio, Giant -- composed of Enei, Ekta and Nersa -- these boys have been killing it on the dubstep front from the heart of St Petersburg for the last couple of years now. Here they bring us a bit of their dark Russian vibes in 'Drumstick' and 'Swoosh'. A - 'Drumstick': Squeaking synths and vocodered SFX are the order of the day in 'Drumstick,' and the tune drops into a wobbly b-line number with plenty of grimy beats and retro sounding sampling. Giant keep it stripped back for the rest of the 'Drumstick,' with great effect. With heavy subs and intensely dark bass, expect to be blown away by the sheer intensity of this 'Drumstick.' AA - 'Swoosh' If that's not enough for you, then 'Swoosh' over to the flip for more heavy beats. An alarm siren wails for the first ten seconds, grabbing your attention, before the main beat and wobby b-line kick in and the layers of sound build up. Experimental, with jingling sounds, percussion and vocodered clips, the tune swooshes in and out, focusing on different sounds at different times. Top notch -- this is going be beyond big, it's going to be Giant!"

HENCH 011EP
"This is the second 12" from recent Hench signing Chasing Shadows. The duo drop some serious pressure with these dark and dirty tunes straight from the heart of cutting-edge dubstep production. They've already received attention from the likes of: Mary Anne Hobbs, Pendulum, Plastician, N-Type, and Benga, so give them a listen and see what all the hype's about! A. 'Ill' - 'Ill' builds from an eerie intro, with sultry guitar chords and stabbing beat, slowly winding up to an immense drop. With twisted beats, a punishing b-line, and sweeping atmospherics, this is iller than 'Ill' - the bass is so low it will probably make you sick! Grimy and growling, this is a tune that's going to tear your immune system to shreds. AA. 'Amirah' - Flip over for another dark, deep, no-nonsense number with 'Amirah'; with ominous atmospherics, a stabbing drumbeat, and oriental female vox, 'Amirah' has plenty of spice and a feisty kick! A helicopter chopper sound fades in and out of consciousness and adds to the mayhem. Powerful and intense, with pummeling subs, heavy bassline and a thumping drum kick, 'Amirah' is a tune that takes no prisoners!"

HENCH 012EP
"Born and bred in Croydon, 19-year old Justin Cantor, a.k.a Lost, is the latest addition to the acclaimed Hench crew. Somewhat of a child prodigy, Justin started DJing at an early age, and got his first set of decks aged 12. It was not long before Justin's attention was caught by the burgeoning dubstep movement; inspired by the sounds of Skream and Digital Mystikz's, he turned his hand to dubstep production early in 2008. Soon after, his debut release came out on Hatcha & N-Type's
Croydon Dubheads
EP. He recently was named alongside Emalkay and 16 Bit as one to watch in Radio 1xtra's 'Future Sound of Dubstep'. We're proud to present Lost's debut release on the Hench imprint and are sure that you'll enjoy it. Lost creates a seriously atmospheric mood from the start in 'Ironhide,' building to a subtle drop of one mean reverbed wobbly bassline. A real creeper of a tune, the open hi-hat progresses throughout, giving way to a double time feel that'll keep heads nodding. This is one serious weapon for your bag!"

Sampler 1 taken from Hench's
Mixtape Vol. I
. "The explosion of dubstep in the UK (and Bristol in particular) has dictated that the standard of production and new ideas is fiercely competed. Nevertheless, Hench is one label that remains at the forefront of this ever-expanding scene. The 13th release from the imprint presents an outstanding 12" comprised of 'Rhythm' from label boss, Jakes, along with the debut release from Bristol's rapidly rising star, Mensah. 'Rhythm' is the name, and you can bet your bottom dollar that this tune has it. Immediately setting the step, a background siren gives the warning for what's about to follow. With Jakes' vocal defining the riff of the track, get ready for a bassline that's best described as 'underwater funk'. This tune's had a lot of love from all the right people, and it's not hard to see why -- with Jakes' innovative flavour stamped all over it, 'Rhythm' truly stands out in the crowd. Flip over for the bass-led rhythm of 'Pulse 80's'. Building the intro with a glitchy lead-synth and punchy kick-drum, nothing detracts from the simple yet effective pulse of the beat. When the bass drops, expect the dancefloor to be bouncing up and down in time. Showcasing Mensah's diverse influences, this is just one example of the various different styles of dubstep productions he's producing right now."

Sampler 2 taken from Hench's
Mixtape Vol. I
. "For the Hench camp, this is one very exciting release. Featuring the debut release on the label from Croydon producers, Tek-One, and yet another stunner from Hench favourite, Komonazmuk. Both tracks exemplify what this label has become renowned for: bass-heavy, forward-thinking dubstep pressure -- and it also happens that both tracks are absolutely killer! 'Broken String' is one standout tune, recognizable from the off. A haunting synth with the kind of vocal rare in dubstep productions, brings you in gently to the drop. From there it's all change -- the drum roll makes way for a mechanical and glitchy bass riff that's going to have people running for cover. With the occasional vocal stab, Tek-One's effort is an outstandingly paradoxical release -- both beautifully atmospheric and dancefloor-destroying at the same time. A return to Hench from one of Bristol's most exciting producers, Komonazmuk, and using 'You Fo' as a measure, it's clear that Komon's style has matured significantly during that time. This release is a heavily dubby and techno-infused track that is a real creeper. Building a moody affair from the off, the sub-bass is complemented by tripped-out stabs of the synth. One for the connoisseurs of what dubstep has grown into -- 'You Fo' pays homage to the melting pot of styles that contribute to what this genre is today."

"Visit Bristol and mention the name Mensah; chances are that someone's going to know the man we're talking about. Having become involved in the Bristol music scene at an early age, there's no surprise that his productions epitomize the things associated with the city's music -- positivity and progressiveness. Having already lent the bouncy number, 'Pulse 80's,' to the
Hench Mixtape Vol. 1
, and getting voted in the as one of the 'Top 10 Producers to watch' in the Dubstep Forum Awards, Mensah provides us with yet more reason to mark him down as one to keep an eye on in the future. The
Untitled Future Funk
EP is a 3-track release that provides a true insight into the depth of studio-skills this young artist has developed, touching on both the atmospheric and downright funky sides of dubstep. Already having had a track placed on the
CSI
TV series ('Stapleton Rd') and with all tracks receiving regular play from the scene's big hitters, we're excited to present this stunning effort from Mensah. A. '1986 Was The Future' - The synth-led chords from the outset of this tune frame it as a future classic of dubstep. Not holding back when the bassline drops, Mensah has crafted a sound that delivers a punch. A truly gripping production that keeps you locked, seeming to introduce new sounds and phrases whilst maintaining its esoteric feel. '1986 Was The Future' is going to be one of those tunes that'll have the dancefloor screaming for rewind after rewind -- and we're sorry, but you're going to be obliged to give it to them! "Having already graced Hench with his debut release,
Ironhide/Slaughtered
, Justin Cantor, aka Lost, brings his latest batch of weaponry. Since that first release, Lost has been a regular feature in Get Darker TV's live shows and this new offering will not disappoint fans. His debut releases on Hench deemed strong enough to appear next to some of the scene's biggest producers, such as Jakes, Komonazmuk and Chasing Shadows. Cutting straight to the chase, Lost captures the sub-bass perspective of '90s dance culture perfectly with 'Disgustin Justin.' With the swinging bassline creating a raw and dubby atmosphere, you can immediately tell that this was built to be played on a big sound system. Scattered hi-hats and glitches keep the momentum rolling forward solidly. The estranged vocal in the background and percussive drums add to the tripped-out mood of this production. From the evidence shown here, there is no doubt that Lost's sound is maturing. An eerie soundscape guides us into 'Metalfoot,' leading you into a false sense of security whilst building to the drop. And when this fat, chrome-guilded bassline drops in, you gather an understanding of where the inspiration for this track's name came from. Slow-drawing snare, pulsating sub-bass and ticking hi-hats provide the ingredients for this dread-inducing track. This one's a real grower and is going to be turning heads when it gets dropped on the dancefloor."

"Giant - composed of Enei, Ekta and Nersa - have been transmitting soundwaves of pure badness from the heart of St Petersburg for the last couple of years now. Providing their dark Russian vibes for the HENCH imprint, this trio should be considered one of the dubstep scene's quickest rising stars. Their debut 12" on the label, 'Drumstick' and 'Swoosh', was one of 2009's biggest selling releases and instantly framed their reputation as bringing club-led, off the wall, energetic music to all who listen. Here they bring us two fresh yet familiar tracks to give us yet more reason to be keeping an eye out for Giant in 2010. Sit back and enjoy. We dare you to sit still to these!!! A. 'Herbert'- Drawing for a fat and crunchy intro, it's not long before Giant get the subbass shaking the ground beneath your very feet. 'Herbert' brings a jaw-breaking bassline, yet remains funky and progressive throughout. Squeaky synth stabs blend between the forward-rolling arpeggio riffs to create a devastatingly fluid destroyer. Much like their notorious debut Hench track, 'Drumstick', 'Herbert' manages perfectly to pull off the balance between a thumping, yet dancefloor-friendly, release. AA. 'Collins Booster'- Multi-layered rave vocals, fantasy-style looped riff and squelchy bassline accelerate 'Collins Booster' from 0-100 mph within moments. Maintaining their light sound, Giant provide a dubby and fast-paced killer that takes all who listen up to the very heights before dropping them into some serious dutty-damage. Don't underestimate what this will do in the rave -- this drop is golden!"

"These tracks have been causing quite a stir. So tantalizingly disgusting that the likes of Rusko, Sukh Knight, NType, Doctor P, Flux Pavillion, Jakes and Trolley Snatcha can't leave it alone! Eddie K is no newcomer to the dance music scene. Starting out as a drum and bass producer, his debut releases made an impact amongst the scene with tracks such as 'Planet Terror' and 'My Sound' remaining in DJ bags to date. More recently, Ed's been making a significant entry into the dubstep world. His first dubstep release on H.E.N.C.H (
Who's the Hardest/The Shivers
) had big reactions from all of the top names in the scene, which led up to his next release, his dubstep remix of DJ Prime Cuts ft. MC Dynamite's 'Warning,' released on DSR at the end of 2009. This reached #2 in the
Beatport
dubstep download chart and was recently featured in the latest installment of Xbox's 'Crackdown' franchise. His latest release sees him collaborate with Hench youngster Minus, along with emphatic appearances by London-based vocalist Beezy, and Bristol's Shadz. If this release doesn't serve as a tribute to the different directions dubstep has taken within recent years, then it certainly acts as proof that Eddie K's sound and production skills have matured quicker than we could have anticipated."

With each new release Mensah's studio skills and fresh thinking stand out ever clearer. This latest offering will be no disappointment. A dreamy synth-line commences 'Digital Dreamer', which immediately sets the scene for one of Mensah's more ethereal productions.
