Susie Ibarra (drums), Cooper Moore (piano and self-made instruments), Charlie Burnham (violin). "The Susie Ibarra Trio is one of the most talked about bands in New York now. Her unique approach and sensitivity as a drummer are brought forth and are enhanced by her beautifully melodic composition and by the deep interaction of these three masterful improvisers. Together they explore vast musical expanses, from a cover of a Jimi Hendrix song to powerful free improvisations; and from shimmering ballads to an African beat played with a homemade harp. All bound together by Susie Ibarra's musical vision. This music is effortlessly magical."

Solo piano, recorded at the Pizza Joint, Guelph, Canada, 9/10/1999. "The music begins on an abstract, angular and modern note, as if to make an announcement about what is to come. What follows however is an amazing variety and blend of styles and understandings; this is, in fact, one man's history of the 20th century African-American, improvised piano." -- David Budbill

"Joshua Smith (tenor sax); Joe Tamino (Drums & Percussion); Jermy Bleich (Bass). They are a young band from Clevland now residing in New York. Playing their version of the funk." "Birth is a musical group that transcends realms, they create an unlikely paring of experimental improvising (jazz idiom and other) and the equally uncharted territory of live (manual ie. played live/not programmed) jungle/drum 'n' bass. Tight, intertwined compositions give way to communicative improvising, flawlessly navigating odd time passages, manic beats, and subtle textures with fierce aggression and mature restrain."

Price:
$13.50

HOP 019CD
"This a second recording for Steve Dalachinsky who is the poet of the downtown music scene. Nobody can put this music into words as Dalachinky does, with the heart of a Brooklyn Jew... His work is profound, ruff and romantic at the same time like the spirit of the music. This time he is joined by the all around great pianist Matthew Shipp who makes use of some of his most thoughtful playing for a very beautiful and intimate session."

Catalog #:
HOP 021CD
Assif Tsahar - (Tenor Sax & bass clarinet); Mat Maneri - (5 string electric Violin); Jim Black - (drums). "This trio is a gem. Tsahar, Maneri and Black are three of the most exciting and creative young musicians in New York these days. For some reason this band is the only place there paths cross. But one would think they have been playing together for ever, as their interaction are absolutely telepathic. Their music takes us through some magical and uncharted territory as they flow effortlessly on a web of changing rhythms and sounds."
Artist:
KRETZMER TRIO, YONI
Title:
Nevertheless
Label:
HOPSCOTCH
Format:
CD
Price:
$14.00
Catalog #:
HOP 022CD
"Yoni Kretzmer, newly arrived in NYC, has just produced his second CD,
Nevertheless
. In it he progresses still further on his unique journey, an emotional and quizzical investigation of naïve melodies with a twist: simple truths skeptically reexamined, which while uncompromisingly intelligent, nonetheless -- nevertheless -- do not alienate, but rather engage the listener on what is almost an invasively emotional plane. Yoni is a true master of his craft: his music is challenging, never boring, and incredibly personal, almost to the point of voyeurism. A young Israeli avant-garde jazz saxophonist, he has been described as a passionate and accurate player, with the maturity and depth of a veteran jazz musician. After his first CD, in which Kretzmer used an almost unlikely arrangement of saxophone, bass, drums, cello and viola, in this CD Kretzmer goes back to basics -- giving his own take on the traditional sax-bass-drums trio. Mike and Jason are the ideal sides to this triangle: Mike Pride, despite his sophisticated innovativeness, approaches the drums with a primal intensity, and Jason Ajermian's extravagant bass provides an essential depth to this trio's sound. The CD consists of ten of Kretzmer's minimally planned ideas -- whims almost -- which provide a conceptual framework for free exploration. The piece entitled 'four notes' is in fact an exploration of exactly that: of four notes. That is all Kretzmer wrote down."

Assif tsahar (tenor sax and bass clarinet); Tatsuya Nakatani(drums and gongs). Tsahar and Nakatani have been playing in Astor place every Sunday for the past three years, bringing their music to New York streets for all to hear. This experience made them into a very tight unit with a unique sound.
