INA 1002
Repressed. INA GRM is a recording studio and label founded by Pierre Schaeffer in 1958 that has been central in the development, documentation and support of electronic/musique concrete/electroacoustic/acousmatic music ever since. Their LP series in the 70s was a true statement of artistry, and now they are heavily involved in issuing CDs of old & new classics. It is with great pleasure that we can offer this label for distribution; they've had a number of confusing relations with past distributors and the CDs have always been somewhat painful to obtain. This is a list of all CDs currently in print. If you're new to this field, check out Francois Bayle, Bernard Parmegiani or the Pierre Schaeffer box first, but just about every title has it's merits. All the CDs have fairly extensive liner notes, with French and English translations. On this first CD Parmegiani tries to acousmatically recreate "The Creation Of the World" -- starting with the Black Light of the pre-"Big Bang": "The absence of tonality that characterizes a good deal of sound material in 'Black Light' is due to the use of 'white' noises, that is to say sounds whose mass theoretically contains all the frequencies that can be accumulated statistically..." And then leading on to "The Metamorphosis Of the Void" & "The Sign Of Life." And so on. Parmegiani is one of our favorite of the French electroacoustic composers, his attention to sonic detail always a marvel to witness; recordings are few and far between. "What [Parmegiani's] compositions have in common is a strong emphasis on sounds produced by matter and sounds recorded from nature which he uses as a model. The concept of metamorphism which characterizes many of Parmegiani's works is expressed in his use of such elements as the ephemeral, the fleeting, the motions of air, the transparency or non-transparency of the space in which he arrays different levels of depth, the repetitive, the 'mirror effect'."

2005 repress with new cover art; this is a new version of the co-release with EMF (former cat# of EMF 010). Finally available again, the complete works compilation of the groundbreaking work by the electronic music pioneer; released in collaboration between INA-GRM in France & EMF in the U.S.. "This 3-CD package is the definitive and complete collection of Pierre Schaeffer's musical works, beginning with the first of his musique concrète compositions, continuing with the collaborations with Pierre Henry, and concluding with Schaeffer's late works from the 1970s. In 1948, Pierre Schaeffer, then a radio engineer at Radiodiffusion Française, took a radio sound truck out to Batignolles, near Paris, to record railroad locomotives. He used those sounds in a sound collage called 'Etude aux Chemins de Fer' ('Railroad Study') and then named his new approach 'musique concrète'. He composed four other sound collages in 1948, using thin-metal instruments, wooden percussion, and two whirligigs ('Etude aux Tourniquets'), an orchestra tuning up ('Etude pour Orchestre'), noises derived from a piano that is played in a variety of ways ('Etude au Piano'), and pots, pans and voices ('Etude aux Casseroles'). The five compositions were then broadcast from Paris on October 5, 1948 as a 'Concert of Noises,' and the broadcast was so successful, and evoked such widespread interest, that Schaeffer was granted an assistant. Pierre Henry worked with Schaeffer from 1949 to 1957. Their first collaboration was 'Symphonie pour un Homme Seul' ('Symphony for One Man Alone'), which was eventually used by Maurice Bejart in a 1955 performance by his dance company. Their next major collaborations were 'Orphee' and 'Orphee 53.' One of the special surprises to be found in these recordings is Pierre Henry's 'Echo d'Orphee, pour P. Schaeffer,' composed in 1988 as an homage to Pierre Schaeffer. Henry referred to it as a 'patchwork (of the existing) 'fragments' from 'Orphee' ('Orpheus 51 and 53,' a 1950 collaboration between the two composers) ... conceived in your style rather than mine ... a magnetic present.' These discs also include Schaeffer's works from the late 1950s and 1970s, some of them revisions of his early music, some of them technically improved, some of them reworked and shortened. You'll also find an extensive and informative booklet in French and English, with essays and tributes by Schaeffer's colleagues (among them François Bayle, Michel Chion, François Weyergans, and Jean-Christophe Thomas), a history, bibliography, excerpts from his books, letters, and photographs. It's a rich collection of material. Schaeffer was one of those people who changed the world, and this package will give you a good idea of how it happened."

An electroacoustic work based on Rimbaud's
A Season in Hell
("one of the richest texts in French poetry.... all that pertains to the human and divine is contained in this visionary text yet constructed disorder by a real master of language"). Amy and Daniel Teruggi play electroacoustic piano's; there is various percussion, and soprano vocalist Fusako Kondo. Although good parts of this are strictly musical, the French language texts are a strong part of it.

"Basically, this work consists of sounds picked up by the microphone and produced by very simple objects: stones of different sizes and densities, pieces of wood of various dimensions. That is as far as the material goes. The morphologies I obtained were then modified by multiple manipulations in the studio, in order to make this raw material reflect my subjectivity...progressively moving from a simple line of sound to a complex musical structure."

Mid-90s release, repressed. One long piece ("The Song of Songs"), combines Egyptian erotic ditties, Hebrew, Lebanese and Transjordanian love songs and Syrian wedding chants that treat the couple as king and queen for the duration of the wedding fest," with the idea of transforming text into sounds. "His approach essentially reflects a preoccupation with analogies and image ambiguities, which he interprets in an essentially terratological polyfiguration closely associating the living with the abstract." Finally reissued, with new artwork; this has been the most in-demand electroacoustic CD for the past few years. Parmegiani is one the electroacoustic superstars of the INA GRM universe, and along with various Bayle titles this is a great place to start with the label. This amazing double CD is broken up into 2 parts: the first disc consists of old-style tape-splicing electroacoustic material, dating from 1963 to 1976 ("Violostries," "Pour en Finir avec le Pourvoir d'Orphee" & "Dedans-Dehors"). The 2nd disc represents post-computer acousmatic music, with works from 1986 to 1991 ("Rouge-Mort:" "Thanatos," "Exercisme 3" & "Le Present Compose"). All are thoroughly soaked with the intuitive power of brain-scanning sonic properties, tones fade and explode with stunning neuronic intensity. "Exercisme 3" features "a sort of interface enabling natural sounds or analogical synthetic sounds to release digitally synthesized sounds. Such and such a series of impulsions releases virtually aleatoric, and sometimes very varied, repetitions of digital sounds. These repetitions are often very 'dense' and take us to the limits of continual sound phenomena, thus making these 'factory sounds' lose their instrumental 'soul.' Thus, we suddenly swing from one domain to another, from the instrumental to the electroacoustic, from a language we understand, to an 'unknown language.'"

INA 2010-12CD
Repressed for the first time in a few years, this is a new reissue of an obscure artifact from 1967. Issued on 3 CDs, with a 176 page book (in French, English & Spanish), at a pretty low unit price. This is the third multi-CD set from Schaeffer, not to be confused with
L'Oeuvre Musicale
(3CD box, EMF 010) or the relatively impossible to find
La Coquille á Planètes
(4CD/book on INA/MFA). These CDs contains sound examples and spoken text (explanations) by Schaeffer. "
Solfège De L'objet Sonore
(Music Theory Of the Acoustic Object) is a sound recording that accompanied 'Traité des Objets Musicaux' (Treatise On Musical Objects) by Pierre Schaeffer, originally issued by ORTF (French Broadcasting Authority) as a long playing record in 1967 (a more common 3 cassette version was distributed later)." It features 282 short "sound examples", including the works of: Bernard Parmegiani, Ivo Malec, Pierre Henry, Françoise Bayle, Edgar Canton, Iannis Xenakis. Guy Reibel: "It was a wonderful period when the GRM was like a beehive buzzing with a multitude of strange, unpredictable events. Instrumental and electroacoustic mediums were combined, the place became a meeting point for all kinds of music and sounds. We were prepared for anything, craving new experiences and previously unheard-of sounds, working night and day in close musical communion, the center of which was Music Theory, that compulsory beginners exercise that is, in fact, a distillation of the most valuable discoveries musicians have made over the centuries. We created, transposed, fragmented, multiplied and transformed thousands of sounds that Pierre Schaeffer used to concoct his creations and gradually build up his musical language. Even though the musical world has never been very enthusiastic about Schaeffer's research, his message has been understood and has significantly influenced musical creation in the second half of the 20th century. Schaeffer has proved himself to be one of this century's major researchers and his influence can only continue to grow."

"Collection of three contemporary electro-acoustic pieces ('Subgestuel', for six percussionists and tape (1991), 'Diffluences', for piano and tape (1994), and 'Phonophonie' for tape (1998)) from this GRM member, student of Pierre Schaeffer and Guy Reibel's who has also "contributed to the musical research activities of the IRCAM, in the Atelier de Recherches Instrumentales (1985 and taken part in the development of the QUATRON, the real-time synthesis computing system of the IMCA at Auch (1989-1990)". -- Hrvatski. On 'Diffluences': "The relationship between tape and piano is not the classical one between two instruments in concert, but rather a blending, a block of pianos! The title 'Diffluences' alludes to these two aspects of the composer's work, the writing and the treatment of sound from beginning to end; the most important thing being to establish a balance between these two approaches to composition, so that each may play a mutually dynamic role. Energy? -- Albert Jacquards' idea of a torrent goes well with these ideas coursing along. And the joy of the torrent? It's up to you to listen..."

"CD issue compiling three of Reibel's voice-themed works over the years: 'On eût dit des coups d'ailes' (an homage to Pierre Schaeffer from 1996 incorporating digital processing into a post-Penderecki/Ligeti landscape), 'Suite pour Edgar Poe' (a super-bleepy setting of three poems from the Beaudelaire translations of Poe ('Nouvelles Histoires Extraordinaires') to concrete sound from 1973), and a section of 'Langages imaginaires' (also a grouping of poetry, in this case Rimbaud and Butor, and word-sound from 1981). Reibel's up there in my book with Parmegiani and Bayle as one of the chief architects of the digital-age INA sound and this serves as a fine introduction to his 'monde de bruit'. The Memory of Sounds
. Features 3 works: "Capture Éphémère" (1967); "Sons-jeu" (1987); "La Mémoire des Sons" (2001). "Excepting some rare mixed pieces, Paremegiani's works as a whole take the form of music for 'fixedsounds', coming within the scope of the immense repertoire of electro-acoustic music. From his training in the art of mime and his experience as a sound engineer, Parmegiani has retained a taste for a hand-to-hand approach (sound/embodiment, as we could be tempted to say) with various sound mate-rials which he has developed throughout markedly diverse works." RE: "Capture Éphémère": "The beating of terror-stricken wings, gliding ascents, rockets, dull explosions: the fission of the fine powder of the sound is then recovered, in layers of 'captured', beating time: impossible stases of reso-nance ('fleeting' by their very nature ...) which however persist, beating out their miraculous cohesion: a magical effect even today: proof that it is not due to technique. Or: a sequence of utter loss, waste: an accumulation as Schaeffer would have said ('reiteration abounding in brief elements'; 'like a shower of stones dispersing'...), having the fluidity of a waterfall, with one hundred thousand elements interwoven in discontinuity, 'eccentric', generous, suffocating... Or: this furious vibration, which in its steep ascent, is imbued with a triumphant appearance of tireless virtuosity... And so many intimately interwoven composite sequences, as they advance, hurtling through space (and the Russian mountains ...) with seemingly inexhaustible energy; and marked several times, just before a silence, by the same small elegant asterisk. However, all of this (deafening volubility) is finally calmed by a short coda: where a movement to reduce and rarefy particles splits this mass in extremis into an ethereal shower of sparks, having the effect of a prolonged pause." -- Jean-Christophe Thomas.

Subtitled "Ou les Peripeties des Ubu". Described as a "Funamburlesquerie en 14 sequences", based around the texts of Alfred Jarry (for soprano, mezzo-soprano, baritone, saxophones and stereo tape). "Most of his pieces are more or less connected with vocality. Pure and barbarous, the voice which speaks and sings, which laughs and grows angry, which is carried away on a wave of eloquence and emotion, has become an essential component of his theatrical outlook. His 'motely' and lyrical language move like 'a character passing through a series of different landscapes'." "In the world of electro-acoustic music, Lejeune has a place of his own. He is perhaps the only person in this musical galaxy to speak, not without humour, the language of the fairy tale and of dreams, of childhood and of love, of gluttony and eroticism."

INA GRM (FRANCE)

Catalog #:
INA 2025
First full CD release by this Bulgarian-born composer (1925-1997). Includes the first issue of a 1973 doom-concrete classic, "Threne", plus other early works. An important INA GRM document. "The work 'Threne' is a creation inspired from fragments of an unfinished poem Mallarme had attempted to write following the death of his son when aged 8, in 1879. The musical composition recorded on magnetic tape features the exclusive use of voice: a mixed choir and two narrators. Following recording production, these voices were subsequently processed using electro-acoustic techniques, being purposely restrained in many cases. On the other hand, a more radical electro-acoustic and systematic approach governs the relationships and cross-linking arising between work and song, a process involving actual dynamic modulation. Through the latter, it becomes possible to provide a given 'model' of created sound -- chorus harmony, polyphonic sung vocal structures, whispers, etc. -- with intensity, dynamic pulsation derived from another material, in this case, from the spoken word. In this way, the subtleness of words becomes embedded in song, with the latter receiving rhythmical and dynamic inflection from the words. Between the 'word thus deepened out' appearing in song, and the real word itself found here and there throughout the work, an unlimited array of states of existence come into being, intermediate levels where song and word appear to merge to a point where they exchange identities, sound becoming the word in spirit and the word becomes pure music." Also features: "Text I" (1958, for magnetic tape (2 tracks); "Text II" (1959, for two magnetic tapes); "Concerto Pour Piano et Orchestre" (performed by Claude Helffer, piano; Orchestre National de France, Conducted by Ivo Malec).

New 2004 Parmegiani release, featuring: "L'oeil Ecoute" (1970), "La Roue Ferris" (1971), "Especes d'espace" (2002-2003). "Excepting some mixed pieces, his work as a whole takes the form of music for 'fixed sound', coming within the scope of the immense repertoire of electro-acoustic music. In 1971, he made a video film based on the music in 'L'Oeil ecoute', featuring visual imagery processed through a synthesizer. We only need listen to the opening of 'L'Oeil ecoute', a sustained swirl and flurry, emerging as a wave about to break, which we only just manage to glimpse at its approach, just like this train which we take a full speed, surging forward headlong at the opening of the piece. At the very outset, on the one hand, everything is given in a single act, the music is already moving forward; and on the other, the ghostly realm into which it takes us is already amply filled out. We note that the large arbitrary breaks in tone Parmegiani achieves in 'L'Oeil ecoute' and indeed throughout all his musical compositions, arise as searching encounters. As such, they are gestures deriving from the sculptor himself. The blocks used are very imposing and the matter extremely dense..."

2006 release, presenting 3 versions of "Plain-Temps". Classic new work from the most important INA GRM composer. The first part of the suite, "Le Present Compose" is from 1991, recorded here in 2006. "The second part is "Entre-Temps" from 1992.
"The gradual slowing down of the tick-tock sound of a penduluum with which the this piece opens provides us with not only the most symbolic but also the most illusory image of the passing of time. This is followed by by a constantly changing continuum, apparently homogenous and harmonious yet ultimately fragile. In the ever wider intervals that open up between these carefully-timed happenings, soundscapes appear. These resemble certain image-memories of everyday events, some close, some distant."

INA 5008
Debut INA GRM CD by this young French composer, featuring 2 works: "Futaie" (1996) & "Tchernoziom" (1998). 33 minutes of music, released as part of INA's cheaper short-length CD series. "'Futaie' unfolds in time like a long, slow sentence in which only the punctuation remains. 'Futaie' is composed of immobile masses and lightning flashes that oppose one another making the piece a fleeting moment that has been hollowed out, widened and extended. A succession of temporal occurrences convey the feeling of dual time, of a 'common presence' of events the duration of which is both individual and joint, similar to the way in which trees form a forest. 'Tchernoziom' is the continuation and amplification of work on the tremor of sound sketched out in the central section of 'Futaie'. It is a study on effusive sound material that is both undeveloped and renewed. The grain of which constantly suggests possible interruption. The result is one of fleeting ideas and precarious stability of the overall structure. 'Tchernoziom means 'black soil' and refers to the lands in the Ukraine that are renowned for being extremely fertile."

It conveys an impression of in-between, uncertainty, contraries. After studying music in the French National Music School, a decisive encounter with Ivo Malec, Guy Reibel, Jacques Lejeune and Jean Schwarz at the GRM will introduce him to electroacoustic music which he will afterwards focus on. He has composed around fifty instrumental, vocal and electro acoustic works. 33-minute EP, featuring two works: "Primitive" (1995); "Espaces Paradoxes" (1987-89). RE: "Espaces-Paradoxes": "The first acousmatic work designed and projected in 16 real tracks, in full stereo. It deals with the question of writing a three dimensional space into the very act of studio composition. A continuum of singular spaces, real and suggested, give rhythm to the overall structure. The alternating of imagined spatial situations that oppose each other, answer each other or superimpose on each other, and wherein the sound effects are seemingly but a pretext for these figures in space. In return, and paradoxically, these give a sense and a life to the sound forms themselves. Thus, a specific form of discourse is borne of the simultaneous and successive perception of all these planes, trajectories and centres transmitting distinct sounds into the air."

"
Six Japanese Gardens and Trois Rivières Delta
are twin works for percussion and electronic instruments, composed in 1993. 'Six Japanese Gardens', created by Shiniti Ueno in Tokyo on 12 July 1995, dedicated to the memory of Toru Takemitsu, is a series of impressions of the gardens of Kyoto, the names of which correspond to the titles of the various sections of the work. The instrumental and electronic elements have been deliberately restricted in order to facilitate greater perception of rhythmic developments through the exploration of instrumental hues. 'Trois Rivieres Delta': The first part of the work constitutes a presentation of almost the entire range of the instruments involved. The rhythmical aspect itself has almost been removed, thereby giving way to a range of tones, colours, nuances of resonance, falls and roughness. The instruments chosen come from all-members of the percussion families, but those without definite pitch have been accorded a primary role. The second part adds a rhythmical aspect to colour nuances and texture. An ostinato is developed in markedly varying directions whilst the lost part is an epilogue recalling the components of the two preceding parts, achieved by placing them in different relationships to each other. The voice of the percussionist is or extension of the instruments, being alternately used to create rhythmically free textures, and combined in an instrumental way its the composition of rhythm and timbre. The poem 'Moon Night on the River' composed by the Chinese poet Li Po (701-762), constitutes the material itself, with the voice being amplified and further enhanced throughout, as is a selection of the instruments. For this version, a soloist percussion dimension was recast from-the original score and a new electronic section designed by Jean-Baptiste Barrière, including the remaining percussion parts already pre-recorded and processed, developing a spatialisation dimension in the work."

First full CD issue by Alvarez, featuring 2 long works from 2000/2002. "Mexican composer interested in the rhythmic and acousmatic interaction between instrumental and electroacoustic sound. This disc reunites two works that prompt the listener to cast an aural gaze at the interior of sound itself. In the first, we are presented with a gamut of imaginary landscapes, symmetries and spaces inspired by the unexpected geometry of cacti. The second work brings us to the extraordinary sound of the steel pans, intricately intertwined within a shimmering path of fugitive trajectories and metallic resonances."

Quotes abound: 'Gruel is a healthy food which calms the pangs of hunger, is easily digested not very restorative.' Conversely, 'Animal tongues do not exceed the scope of their intelligence; but the human tongue texture, enrobed in its various membranes, heralds the sublime purpose for which it is destined.' Sexy, sexy stuff indeed..." -- Hrvatski.

One 25 minute piece, from 1996. A State/CIRM commissioned work. "There is already music... of an Italian an character in this title! Sonare: l love this word because it is Italian and because upon hearing it, music simply springs forth from within it. For each of the 5 movements, I have chosen a pseudo-instrumental or synthesis sound which I sense will allow me to bring out its very essence to develop it until it is within the deepest levels of the soul, if the soul can at all be rendered accessible to such acoustic resonance!!! I had to imagine the most suitable interplay to bring out such 'intrinsic resonance'. Now of course, no interplay can be genuine unless certain freedoms are present within or inherent to it, the rule being that such an interplay should remain musical whilst the sounds, 'in a real context' become linked to or opposed to each other. No combat, just interplay for its own sake, for itself alone, and at the same time, changes in contour, an opening or closing in the tone, range, patterns of rhythm, as if the work were a living being in itself which these creations in sound so often closely resemble, these same creations in sound, intended firstly for our ears but not only for our ears." -- Parmegiani.

INA CL2022/23CD
Sharp double CD set containing four of Schwarz's attractive 70s tape works. 'Erda' (1971) is a 27 minute piece in eight sections ranging thematically from 'Grillons' ('evocation of world of the insects'), '54 Oiseaux' ('songs of stereotyped birds such that give them the generators of studio 54' (HELLO!!!)), and 'Klook'/'In Memoriam' (both tributes to jazz greats; Kenny Clarke and John Coltrane respectively). 'Symphonie' (1974) is a filmic 24 minute work using orchestral and flute timbres along with subtle tape effects and re-iterative motions. 'Surroundings' (1978) is an extended 53 minute piece that invokes 9 discrete locations (Broadway in Manhattan, Bourbon Street in New Orleans, a cable car in San Francisco, etc...). It features Charles Austin on saxophones and flute and Joe Gallivan (of Love Cry Want fame) on percussion and Moog synthesizer. Lastly (and certainly not leastly), 'Sonances' (1971), which is based around the figures and materials of the Baschet brothers sculptures adorning public and private grounds around the GRM center. "The sheets of the Baschet instruments which haunted the studios of Research centre always fascinated me. I constituted a basic material to start from these sheets. The part proposes a voyage in this worrying world which goes from pointing out that of heart, with the fine metal rattling evoking the noise of the sea against the rocks". Schwarz is perhaps the least visible/most mysterious (alternatingly the most prolific in the CD age) INA composer, alas we've finally been given an insight to his early output. Absolutely necessary." -- Hrvatski. 2CDs for the price of one.

INA CL9820/1CD
Features two relatively recent works: "Goñi'ko Zalduna" (1994) and "Itzala" (1997). Both are long, CD-length epics, 74 & 70 minutes respectively. "Goñi'ko Zalduna" is an opera about "the Legend of the Knight of the Goni". Incidental sounds and ethereal coral effects have their merit, but in limited fashion. "Itzala" is also operatic, but to a much more insane degree -- I'd hate to kill the potential of ever selling a copy of this, but if you could imagine a more musically trained version of Costes -- well, there are moments on this CD that replicate that sort of disdain for convention. Plus a classicist feel for surreal imagery and in general: very flipped atmosphere.

INA M197
Beautifully produced 5" hardcover book with 48 pages of notes & photos about Dufour's work (in French & English), with CD. The disc features 2 major Dufour pieces: "Douze Melodies Acousmatiques" (1988) and "Dix Portraits" (1984). "It is to answer Michel Chion's 'Dix Études de Musique Concréte' that Denis Dufour has composed the 'Twelve Acousmatic Melodies'. A such a title is needed to emphasize the passage from the art of making (which means the working on concrete matter) to the act of hearing (for the acousmatic listening involves the perception of acoustic and mental pictures deprived of their sources). The concept of melody is here extended to the size of the perceptive field allowed by the acousmatic vocabulary. Procession of images, collage of resonant objects, ghostly breath, all these by turns put on stage, piece into space, handled by the 'acousmatic sorcerer' whose quick interventions barely leave the ear enough time to adjust its perception. Through their kaleidoscopic series, the 'Twelve Acousmatic Melodies' supply also the elements of a portrait, image after image, the one of Dufour's resonant world which is built up with its colors, its quarters of shadow, its moods, and we always perceive the sensitive fiber which binds one to another in an unique constellation." -- Michele Tosi.
