Artist: GIL, GILBERTO
Title: Banda Um
Label: IRIS (FRANCE)
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: IRIS 3001994
"Gilberto Gil is a legend of Brazilian music and a cultural icon in his country. From 2003 to 2008, he has served as his country's Minister of Culture in the administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He started out as a bossa nova musician, eventually writing songs that reflected a new focus on political awareness and social activism. He was a key figure in the Música Popular Brasileira and Tropicalismo movements of the 1960s, alongside artists such as long-time collaborator Caetano Veloso. The Brazilian military regime that took power in 1964 saw both Gil and Veloso as a threat, and the two were held for nine months in 1969 before they were told to leave the country. Gil moved to London, but returned to the Brazilian state of Bahia in 1972 and continued his musical career, as well as working as a politician and environmental advocate. Gil's musical style incorporates an eclectic range of influences, including rock, Brazilian genres including samba and forró, African music, and reggae. This Iris 'best-of ' collection includes some of Gil's most popular songs, most of which were recorded in the '80s."

Title: Veena Dreams
Label: IRIS (FRANCE)

Price: $20.00
Catalog #: IRIS 3002002
"Acclaimed Indian artist Raghunath Manet is equally skilled in both dance and music. Born in the former colony of Pondicherry, Manet studied dance with Pondicherry M.S Nathan, Kalakshetra and Ram Gopal, vocal music with Gnanamani Pillai and veena under Gurus Chidambaran Kaumati Sankara Iyer, Rajeshwari Padmanaban and Ranganayaki Rajagopalan. His technique and the purity of style have made him one of the finest exponents of Bharata natyam, India's most ancient dance form. An excellent musician, he knows how to create a perfect fusion between music and dance, which is the secret of his great classical artistry. Manet has released more than 20 CDs, 4 DVDs and has written 3 books. He was the first Indian choreographer to perform in Opera de Paris in France and at the Grimaldi Theatre in Monaco for the Royal family, on the occasion of the first 'Nijinsky' dance awards -- a historic event in the world of dance."

Artist: TOUBAB ALL STARS
Title: Mekfoul District
Label: IRIS (FRANCE)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: IRIS 3002014
"A world away from Pariss tourist traps, Barbes is one of the city's less visited but most fascinating corners. It is an Arab and African enclave that provides a unique and rich color to Paris' cultural landscape. Both Chant du Monde artists Orchestre National de Barbes and the Toubab All Stars are based here, but their stylistic approaches could not be more different. Orchestre National de Barbes focuses on the music of North Africa for their source material, while the Toubab All Stars have blended the music of Jamaica and sub-Saharan Africa, brilliantly absorbing ska, dancehall and soukous styles in a thrilling, hard-to-resist formula."
