For Jukebox Jam number four, Dave Bartholomew takes center stage with two solo sides from his prolific spell with Imperial Records, both with some distinctly Latin/Caribbean seasoning, hence the naming of this label, Mambo. You'd be hard-pressed to find a record which sounds more "N'Awlins" than "Shrimp And Gumbo," a raucous percussion-heavy party-starter perfect for any Creole carnival. The flip-side is an earlier recording from Dave, and again one which could only have come from NOLA. The band pull off a sound so authentic, that you'd imagine it must surely be Cuban players responsible. All-in-all, a nice package then, two bags of mambo-Mardi Gras gris-gris sure to keep you safe from all manner of Voodoo ill-will.

Here is a limited-run 45 rpm reissue of two super hard-to-find singles accredited to the mysterious Marga Benitez, a calypso-singing "exotic dancer" originally from the Caribbean who first made her way to a studio in 1954 with vocal group the Mello Tones. "Geechie Goomie" features slinky vocals alongside an almost clunky, exotic, piano-led accompaniment and some oddly sinister backing vocals from the Mello Tones. "Wino's On Parade" is a curious one-off oddity with calypso vocals, quirky lyrics and doo-wop backing vox.

The Texas-born Larry Dale passed away in May 2010, aged 87. Discovered a while back languishing in the vaults of Groove, a long-defunct sub of RCA set up to handle the parent label's R&B output, these two sides were recorded at New York sessions in the mid-'50s. Both tracks feature the sterling guitar and arrangement skills of Mickey Baker and the handiwork of Jack Dupree on the '88s. Rolling blues rhumba with crashing piano rolls and suggestive lyrics with some greasy blues. Includes the original Groove label design for this long overdue 45rpm vinyl pairing. Limited run of only 500 copies pressed.

Jazzman Records presents a wild Carib-jazz flavored R&B gem flipped with a big and brash jump blues number from bandleader Chris Powell. "I Come From Jamaica" is an early exotic Rn'B jam, while "Country Girl Blues" is an Rn'B dancehall mover. Powell was busy in Philly through the late '40s and '50s, cutting a raft of jump sides and a number of big-band ballads for the Columbia, Okeh and Grand labels. Jazzman Records presents the red-hot Latin jazz-accented R&B instrumental "Ojai" from bandleader Joe Lutcher. Originally pressed only on 78rpm for the Modern label, this appears here on 45rpm vinyl for the very first time, while the B-side alternate take has never been available anywhere at all. Jazzman used the original Modern logo for authenticity (with kind permission). "Ojai" was cut in 1949 -- with its Eastern/minor chord/Latin jazz feel, it bears the clear influence of Ellington with heavy percussion. An absolute scorcher.

Two killer vocal rhythm & blues sides from the great but sadly somewhat unheralded Roy Brown. "Mr. Hound Dog's In Town" was Roy's snappy retort to Big Mama Thornton's hit "Hound Dog," featuring an immense, rolling, drum-led backing track with some killer guitar licks borrowed from Thornton's original. On the flip is a great jump blues classic, and this time Brown is answering his own call. "Miss Fanny Brown" was one of his biggest sellers in the late '40s.

Here is this incredible song at long last, with the blessing of Mark Capanni himself, as it should be -- the original 1973 version of the Jackson Sisters classic rare groove anthem "I Believe In Miracles," on DJ-friendly vinyl. Sublime Axelrod-style folk-jazz orchestration backs Capanni's carefree yet poignant vocals. This recording was completed and ready to go a full 14 months before the Jackson Sisters' version hit the streets, but despite this, it failed to make an impact -- too soulful for rock radio but not soulful enough for R'nB radio -- and the record was pulled. It was the Jackson Sisters with their full-on dancefloor funk that did the business, released in 1974. It's since gained legendary status, a musical definition of the rare groove era and with a multitude of versions and remixes. With original copies of the 45 practically impossible to find, this Jazzman release can only be described as being utterly essential to all DJs, dancers and music lovers, everywhere. Cal Tjader was a vibraphonist of Swedish-American heritage based in California, contracted to Fantasy Records. In 1958 he cut the frenzied "Mamblues," a truly amazing piece of bangin' Latin jazz. Rarely on eBay and extremely hard to find, Milton Wright's second album, 1977's Spaced is an ultra-rare LP that soul and rare groove collectors often talk about but never get to hear. Recorded by the same enigmatic soul singer who gave us the immortal club classic "Keep it Up," this album was overlooked by his record company and the public because it was released just as superstar status was dawning on fellow label mates KC & The Sunshine Band. Overshadowed by the ensuing fame of their sidekicks, the album was suspended in a commercial no-man's-land. Nathan Davis has been an internationally significant figure in jazz throughout the latter half of the 20th century, but to many, his musical legacy remains little known. This album presents the music of Nathan Davis as it developed through the '60s and '70s, from bop through modal to world sounds and funk. Having turned his back on the U.S., he spent the '60s living in Europe, playing and recording with jazz luminaries such as Kenny Clarke, Art Blakey and Eric Dolphy, before returning at the end of the decade to take up a career teaching in Pittsburgh. This collection includes recordings from his most significant albums as recorded in France, Germany, Yugoslavia, Turkey and the U.S., displaying a variety of musical styles, with performances by Davis on tenor & soprano saxophone and flute. The CD booklet contains previously-unpublished photographs and detailed biographical information, documenting a career which has seen him forge an individual path through the history of post-war jazz and help pioneer jazz education in the U.S. at the University of Pittsburgh. Astonishingly, much of Davis' work has never seen general release in the U.S. or the UK, despite his albums being true gems of modern jazz. Less still has been re-released, and until now, there has never been a representative compilation or career overview. This first-ever anthology of Nathan Davis includes liner notes that contain biographical info and also details of the recordings themselves, as gleaned from interviews with Davis and his professional colleagues. It's the fourth installment in Jazzman Records' Holy Grail series, and the label is proud to present Sacramento multi-instrumentalist John Heartsman's hopelessly obscure, self-pressed, top-grade funky jazz & soul from 1977, carefully repressed on CD and vinyl (limited to 1,000 vinyl copies only). Now get this -- the original LP has recently hit over $5,000 (yes, over five thousand U.S. dollars!) -- TWICE -- at online auction! Now it's available in its original format with original artwork for a song, but be quick -- as ALL of the previous releases in this series have all sold out very quickly. John Heartsman is known as the guy who played on a thousand R&B hits. From the mid-'50s to the late '60s he recorded countless sessions, backing up the likes of Jimmy McCracklin, Lowell Fulson, Sugar Pie DeSanto, and many, many more. Then, in the early '70s, exhausted from constant touring and seedy late-night gigs, he took up a low-key residency at a small Sacramento jazz club. Here, Heartsman finally got to do his OWN thing. And his thing went down so well with the local audience that he decided to record some material and offer an LP for sale. The album was quickly snapped up by the Basin St. West regulars, and very few escaped the local area. A couple of decades later, and sadly, a little while after Heartsman himself had passed away, a couple of copies surfaced on the funk collectors' scene in L.A. and whispers and rumours of a set of sustained quality funky soul and jazz began circulating slowly. Very few copies have appeared since, making the LP almost as legendary as the long and hidden career of the man himself. And here it is! In the olden days, the music business was a torrid set of affairs run by hustlers, sharks and gangsters. Broken promises, deceit and corruption was the order of the day, and to be thrown out of a window was seen as a rite of passage into the business. Amongst all this hustle and bustle was the murky world of the "tax scam" label. Set up for wealthy individuals to invest in as a means to take advantage of a tax loophole, labels such as Tiger Lilly, Guinness and Baby Grand (upon which Terea was released in 1977) released many hundreds of obscure titles. The records themselves never saw a proper release and were often dumped in cut-out bins or taken straight to the dump. As such, many of these LPs, including this album by Californian soul outfit Terea, remain extremely scarce and are now highly-prized collector's items. In his liner notes to Jazzman's reissue of the Terea album, producer Dennis Dreith lifts the lid off of the shady business of the tax scam labels. Not only that, but he tells us the story of Terea and the dedicated musicians who freely recorded the music they wanted to record without obligation to the record companies and A&R men. It was in these circumstances that the Terea LP was recorded, a work of art, if only for the utterly joyous "Pretty Bird." Every once in a while, a record presents itself so defiant in its refusal of categorization that it becomes the bane of those poor vinyl archaeologists whose business it is to file and classify. The aptly-named The Naked Truth (1975) is one such artifact; a wayfaring stray of an album that weaves its insouciant magic through the edgelands of sound. The musical provenance is palpable -- an electric blend of spiritual jazz, rhythmic black psychedelia and far-out exotica -- but where it's headed remains a mystery, echoing shapes so strange that they fit no musical crevice. This is an album whose grooves are slow and deep, with a languid, balmy, and irresistibly pensive aura. It's moody: cosmic abstractions ooze from every sweet inflection, lulling arpeggios lose themselves in a haze of forgetfulness. The late Owen Marshall and his band run wild over this record, and their experiments with sound are compelling, occasionally bizarre, and chock-full of strange paradoxes. So much of what can be heard here is playful, free, imbued with a sense of wonder and pure joy usually ascribed to that most natural genius of the imagination -- the child. And yet there is a knowingness at work here -- a certain subdued polish tempering these otherwise passionate excursions. The full force of this can be seen in Marshall's use of instruments; among the saxophone, the synth, the percussion, and the electric piano, you will hear the "Hose-a-phone," the "Tube-phone," "Ply-tar," and "Boonet." These are instruments that Owen built himself -- in order, he said, to enable him to "tap the very depths of his creative resources... to make music fun to play, and entertaining to listen to." This is a private-press album that begs to be public. The Naked Truth is an album that wants to be listened to, it wants to be heard and take your hand and lead you far, far away -- it wants to wander with you deep into the woods of imagination, just as Owen himself must have done all those years ago. Subtitled: A Collection Of Enlightening & Liberating Spiritual Jazz 45s. James Spaulding is a jazz flautist and saxophonist who has appeared on countless recordings over the past 50 years. But his recordings as leader are few and far between -- a travesty, as the 45 re-released here is as astounding as the beauty of the label of his solitary East 45; why didn't he make more records under his own name? The Lightmen was a loose group of musicians from Texas led by Bubba Thomas. They recorded several 45s and LPs, all of which remain highly collectible, not just because of their rarity, but because of the sheer quality of the deep, spiritual jazz etched in their grooves. James Tatum is still performing as a pianist with his jazz group and has a great deal of involvement with education and the church. His two highly collectible LPs yielded no 45s, but we are here to put that right. When 4 close friends got together in the small town of Rome, NY to form a band, little did they know that the music they made would still be raising dancefloor dust over 30 years later. Self-funded and pressed in only 500 copies back in 1973, the 45 featuring the catchy "Give Me One More Chance" was sold from the very bandstands they performed from while gigging up and down the East Coast. Another single did appear later, but zero distribution and little knowledge about the workings of the record biz meant the lucrative recording contract they hoped for failed to appear. Members Dean and Vincent still perform to this day, as the duo act D.V.D. The Band.

Staying firmly in the mid '60s, we then have the mighty Sammy Ambrose. This track is a Northern soul anthem that's straight out of a David Lynch soundtrack. This 45 was actually issued in the UK in the late 60s on Stateside but even this issue would set you back �200+, such is the demand.

Another couple of gems from the Barbara Lynn repertoire. Side A is a huge modern soul spin with dense production on the intro and a chorus that's broken up by a sparse open verse. Originals are difficult to locate and reach upwards of $500. Mastered straight from the tapes. Side B features cracking drums, guitar and a killer vocal. This alternate, taken right from the master tapes, is even more direct than the original and sounds as if it was recorded yesterday.
