Title:
Baby Please Don't Go
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
10"
Price:
$12.50
Catalog #:
JBJ 1001EP
The first single on the Jukebox Jam series, the pairing of the incredible
Rose Mitchell
and
Jo Ann Henderson
versions of "Baby Please Don't Go," was an instant sell-out. This is a unique 45 rpm 10" pressing, pressed with a 78 rpm style label, housed in a specially-made, hand screen-printed company sleeve, featuring exclusive artwork. As a bonus the 10" also offers a jazzy rendition by the legendary
Big Maybelle
, recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival, 1958.
Artist:
BARTHOLOMEW, DAVE
Title:
Shrimp And Gumbo/Ah Cubanas
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
7"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
JBJ 1004EP
In conjunction with London's Jukebox Jam club night, Jazzman brings you regular doses of the wildest, rawest original rhythm and blues of the '50s and early '60s on DJ-friendly collectable 45 rpm format. Linked by a sequential catalog numbering system, each release will also boast a unique label design and title. For Jukebox Jam number four,
Dave Bartholomew
takes center stage with two solo sides from his prolific spell with Imperial Records, both with some distinctly Latin/Caribbean seasoning, hence the naming of this label, Mambo. You'd be hard-pressed to find a record which sounds more "N'Awlins" than "Shrimp And Gumbo," a raucous percussion-heavy party-starter perfect for any Creole carnival. The flip-side is an earlier recording from Dave, and again one which could only have come from NOLA. The band pull off a sound so authentic, that you'd imagine it must surely be Cuban players responsible. All-in-all, a nice package then, two bags of mambo-Mardi Gras gris-gris sure to keep you safe from all manner of Voodoo ill-will.
Artist:
BENITEZ, MARGA
Title:
Geechie Goomie/Wino's On Parade
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
7"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
JBJ 1007EP
Here is a limited-run 45 rpm reissue of two super hard-to-find singles accredited to the mysterious
Marga Benitez
, a calypso-singing "exotic dancer" originally from the Caribbean who first made her way to a studio in 1954 with vocal group the
Mello Tones
. "Geechie Goomie" features slinky vocals alongside an almost clunky, exotic, piano-led accompaniment and some oddly sinister backing vocals from the Mello Tones. "Wino's On Parade" is a curious one-off oddity with calypso vocals, quirky lyrics and doo-wop backing vox.
Artist:
BROWN, NAPPY
Title:
Coal Miner
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
7"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
JBJ 1009EP
Originally issued in 1961 on Savoy Records and at the dwindling tail-end of
Nappy Brown
's initial R&B career,
Coal Miner
was a huge record. With its honking sax and sleazy bass line, the song probably arrived a little too late in the day to seriously trouble the charts, but nowadays it sounds perfect for the R&B set and is Nappy's signature record on the mod and popcorn scenes, and beyond. Available in an original and alternate version.
Artist:
DALE, LARRY
Title:
Down To The Bottom/Midnight Hours
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
7"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
JBJ 1010EP
The Texas-born
Larry Dale
passed away in May 2010, aged 87. Discovered a while back languishing in the vaults of Groove, a long-defunct sub of RCA set up to handle the parent label's R&B output, these two sides were recorded at New York sessions in the mid-'50s. Both tracks feature the sterling guitar and arrangement skills of
Mickey Baker
and the handiwork of
Jack Dupree
on the '88s. Rolling blues rhumba with crashing piano rolls and suggestive lyrics with some greasy blues. Includes the original Groove label design for this long overdue 45rpm vinyl pairing. Limited run of only 500 copies pressed.
Artist:
THOMAS/LITTLE ESTHER, BLANCHE
Title:
You Ain't So Such A Much/Hound Dog
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
7"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
JBJ 1011EP
Two superb early '50s R&B femme vocal cuts back-to-back! "You Ain't So Such A Much" is a real killer blues shouter with
"Big Mama" Thornton
-esque vocals from New Orleans resident
Blanche Thomas
and musicianship by
Dave Bartholomew
and his backing band.
Little Esther
's quick-fire cover of Thornton's signature song adds an emphasized rumba shuffle -- one of the more unique interpretations of this oft-covered standard, and definitely one of the wildest. Limited edition of 500 copies only.
Artist:
POWELL, CHRIS
Title:
I Come From Jamaica/Country Girl Blues
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
7"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
JBJ 1012EP
Jazzman Records presents a wild Carib-jazz flavored R&B gem flipped with a big and brash jump blues number from bandleader
Chris Powell
. "I Come From Jamaica" is an early exotic Rn'B jam, while "Country Girl Blues" is an Rn'B dancehall mover. Powell was busy in Philly through the late '40s and '50s, cutting a raft of jump sides and a number of big-band ballads for the Columbia, Okeh and Grand labels. Featuring the first known recorded work of jazz trumpeter
Clifford Brown
.
Artist:
LUTCHER AND HIS ORCHESTRA, JOE
Title:
Ojai
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
7"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
JBJ 1014EP
Jazzman Records presents the red-hot Latin jazz-accented R&B instrumental "Ojai" from bandleader
Joe Lutcher
. Originally pressed only on 78rpm for the Modern label, this appears here on 45rpm vinyl for the very first time, while the B-side alternate take has never been available anywhere at all. Jazzman used the original Modern logo for authenticity (with kind permission). "Ojai" was cut in 1949 -- with its Eastern/minor chord/Latin jazz feel, it bears the clear influence of
Ellington
with heavy percussion. An absolute scorcher.
Artist:
HOWARD, CAMILLE
Title:
Shrinking Up Fast/Please Don't Stay Away Too Long
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
7"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
JBJ 1017EP
Jazzman Records presents another R&B gem in its Jukebox Jam series, featuring '40s songstress
Camille Howard
. Making its first appearance on 45rpm vinyl, "Shrinking Up Fast" is bound to set pulses rising with its hot and seductive jazzy feel, mambo rhythm and wailing horns. "Please Don't Stay Away Too Long" is a breezy jump blues side which also rotates around a loosely Latin-influenced rhythm.
Artist:
FISHER, MARY ANN
Title:
Put On My Shoes/Wild As You Can Be
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
7"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
JBJ 1018EP
Up next in the Jukebox Jam series is a super-moody popcorn-style R&B number with an aptly down-trodden vocal turn from
Mary Ann Fisher
! Originally released on the small but respected blues indie label Fire, this is one which has proven particularly elusive to collectors and DJs. "Put On My Shoes" is slow and mean, whereas "Wild As You Can Be" is a more raucous affair -- a foot-stomping R&B rocker which sees Mary Ann gruffly berating her feral lover for his wily ways.
Artist:
BROWN, ROY
Title:
Mr. Hound Dog's In Town/Fannie Brown Got Married
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
7"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
JBJ 1019EP
Two killer vocal rhythm & blues sides from the great but sadly somewhat unheralded
Roy Brown
. "Mr. Hound Dog's In Town" was Roy's snappy retort to
Big Mama Thornton
's hit "Hound Dog," featuring an immense, rolling, drum-led backing track with some killer guitar licks borrowed from Thornton's original. On the flip is a great jump blues classic, and this time Brown is answering his own call. "Miss Fanny Brown" was one of his biggest sellers in the late '40s.
Artist:
DEMETZ, JEANNE
Title:
Calypso Daddy/Everything Will Be Alright
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
7"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
JBJ 1020EP
Originally discovered and compiled by Soho legend
Gaz Mayall
languishing amidst the old Modern Records tapes held by Ace Records,
Jeanne DeMetz
's killer "Calypso Daddy" has since been crying out for a 45rpm issue and finally there is one. The track features a Latin mambo rhythm pattern, great instrumentation and a seductive, calypso-esque vocal. Jazzman has also recreated the beautiful Modern Music label design of the 1940s for this release -- the first time this artwork has appeared on a 45 rpm pressing.
Artist:
BURR & K.J. TRIO, FRANCES
Title:
I Say No, No More/I Won't Hurt You Anymore
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
7"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
JBJ 1021EP
Raw, hard and guttural blues from obscure female Chicago singer
Frances Burr
, backed up by a hard-driving, pepped-up and rowdy
KJ Trio
-- piano banging, sax honking, drums clattering everywhere. No mistake though, this is Miss Burr's show all the way, and she'll let you know, too! Another unique and wonderful rhythm & blues side to grace the ongoing Jukebox Jam series of club rockin' RnB 45s!
Artist:
TIMMONS, TERRY
Title:
Got Nobody To Love/Daddy Be Good To Me
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
7"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
JBJ 1022EP
Immense early '50s rhythm and blues belter from a singer otherwise more often known for far softer material. This one opens with a rasping horn pattern, before slipping into a swinging and rolling tom-drum and hand-clap rhythm and some knockout call-and-response vocals from
Terry Timmons
and her back-up. The horns return sporadically to wild effect throughout, making this an effortless showcase of the art of "build it up and break it down."
Artist:
RUCKER, ERVIN
Title:
Done Done The Slop/Baby You Were Meant For Me
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
7"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
JBJ 1023EP
Totally amazing, wild and untamed R&B room-shaker all about the dance craze that made a mess of many a dance floor - the Slop! A massive spin on the notorious Pittsburgh scene of yesteryear that's gained another well-earned airing in today's worldwide smattering of vintage R&B clubs. On the flip is "Baby You Were Meant for Me," a totally groovy, low-fi mid-tempo bumper with an off-kilter rhythm and sleazed-out sax solo to die for.
Artist:
GRISWOLD, ARTHUR
Title:
Pretty Mama Blues/Trying For A Future
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
7"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
JBJ 1024EP
By far one of the most infectious and danceable '60s blues singles out there, these thumping, hard-driving, beat-led R&B cuts from the Toledo, Ohio-based
Griswold
brothers --- two under-exposed heroes of latter-period blues who showed up in Detroit sometime in the mid to late '60s to officially cut the last two singles of the legendary Fortune label's catalog. No limp send-off, both tracks are mean and gritty to the very last note.
Artist:
BIG TINY KENNEDY AND HIS ORCHESTRA
Title:
Country Boy/Strange Kind Of Feeling
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
7"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
JBJ 1025EP
Two total killers from
Big Tiny Kennedy
, a cutely-named singer whose over-bearing and fulsome vocal presence was said to be only over-shadowed by his huge physical dimensions. These were amongst Tiny's last credited releases -- one side a deceptively slouching flip on the "Hound Dog" motif and the other a full-bodied jump blues dancer. Limited run of only 500 copies pressed.
Artist:
BERNAL, GIL
Title:
The Dogs/James
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
7"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
JBJ 1028EP
Born and bred in the L.A. melting pot of Watts,
Gil Bernal
was a hugely prolific saxophonist who performed and recorded throughout the '50s with the crème de la crème of the citiy's R&B talent. Signed up with
Leiber & Stoller
's Spark Records, Gil also featured on some of that writing team's biggest and most influential hits. This super-rare solo record is a beat-heavy, jazzy number, delivered in a swinging style -- currently one of the most in-demand R&B spins on the scene, crossing over to the Northern Soul circuit, too.
Artist:
WILLIAMS, LARRY
Title:
Love Charms/Heeby Jeebies
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
7"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
JBJ 1029EP
Two sides appearing on vinyl for the first time ever from the legendary New Orleans rock & roll star,
Larry Williams
. "Love Charms" is a hot mid-tempo R&B cut with a popcorn feel, recorded back in the late '50s by Larry Williams for
Art Rupe
's Specialty label, originally written and recorded by
Ray Stanley
. On the flip, one of a reported 20 recorded takes of Larry Williams' attempt at
Little Richard
's hit "Heeby Jeebies" with
Earl Palmer
on drums.
Artist:
CAPANNI, MARK
Title:
I Believe In Miracles
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
7"
Price:
$8.00
Catalog #:
JM 074EP
Here is this incredible song at long last, with the blessing of
Mark Capanni
himself, as it should be -- the original 1973 version of the
Jackson Sisters
classic rare groove anthem "I Believe In Miracles," on DJ-friendly vinyl. Sublime
Axelrod
-style folk-jazz orchestration backs Capanni's carefree yet poignant vocals. This recording was completed and ready to go a full 14 months before the Jackson Sisters' version hit the streets, but despite this, it failed to make an impact -- too soulful for rock radio but not soulful enough for R'nB radio -- and the record was pulled. It was the Jackson Sisters with their full-on dancefloor funk that did the business, released in 1974. It's since gained legendary status, a musical definition of the rare groove era and with a multitude of versions and remixes. With original copies of the 45 practically impossible to find, this Jazzman release can only be described as being utterly essential to all DJs, dancers and music lovers, everywhere. In a stereo and mono mix.

Kellee Patterson

don't fall far short of spectacular! Recorded back in sunny '76, this is sublime femme-soul with impeccable production, a classy double-sider that cannot fail to please. Here for the first time is the full-length version of "I'm Gonna Love You" and a stunning vocal rendition of "Mister Magic" that's too good to ignore. DJs watch out for immediate dancefloor reaction!

The
Natural Yogurt Band
don't disappoint with another glimpse into their extensive archive of ethereal, esoteric and otherworldly sounds! Percussive polyphonics, transient pulsations and phonosynthetic oscillations massage your brain and ease your senses into a floating world of physiodelic cosmic space throb. Their first album sold out everywhere, quickly, and much was said about the band, much of it rumor and conjecture. Here's a glimpse of their next record,
Tuck In With The Natural Yogurt Band
.

Title:
Reach Out, I'll Be There/Day Tripper
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:

Price:
$8.00
Catalog #:
JM 080EP
It was 1966 when lead singer
Levi Stubbs
of
The Four Tops
belted out the original version of "Reach Out, I'll Be There," reaching No. 1 in the R'nB charts in the process. Since then, it's attracted a variety of cover versions, including this one from little-known soul singer & guitarist
Lee Moses
, who, in 1967 chose RAW, HEAVY FUNK as his theme. He rips
The Beatles
to shreds too, with some fire, soul, heat 'n guts.
Artist:
DRAKE, PETE
Title:
The Spook/Oriental Twist
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
7"
Price:
$8.00
Catalog #:
JM 081EP
This is the music of
Pete Drake
, a virtuoso of the talking steel guitar, an instrumental sideman to many country hits through the years. His debut LP from 1962 carried the usual country fare, but Drake, visionary that he was, could see beyond the cows and the cornfields. What we have here is two sides of weird and wonderful music: American country & western and exotica -- steel guitar style.

GILSON, JEF

Catalog #:
JM 083EP
Jazzman Records presents one of the most brilliant and productive jazzmen ever to have lived: French pianist, composer and arranger
Jef Gilson
. With his career spanning the best part of a century, Gilson has made music with a who's who of jazz greats, has written, performed on and recorded innumerable film scores, albums and 45s, ran the Palm jazz record label, yet despite all this, the 84 year-old remains criminally under-appreciated. Here is a limited, numbered edition 4-track 7" EP featuring some of his finest creations.
Artist:
JOHNSON, JOE
Title:
Rattlesnake, Baby, Rattlesnake/Gold Digging Man
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
7"
Price:
$8.00
Catalog #:
JM 084EP
If it's a shimmying, head-nodding and hip-twisting R&B party-starter that you're looking for, then look no further than "Rattlesnake Baby" from
Joe Johnson
! Based around a ridiculously infectious groove, this is the kind of sound you can easily envision playing behind the podium dancers of the Whisky-A-Go-Go. Flip it over and "Gold Digging Man" is no slouch either -- a heavy-bottomed, boogaloo-tinged stomper which betrays a strong influence of '64, '65-era JB. More party starters, from Jazzman.
Artist:
CONTRERAS, TINO

Format:

Price:

JM 085EP
Our never-ending mission to reveal the under-appreciated-yet-worthy-of-attention jazz masters around the world has now taken us far away and across the sea to Mexico.
Tino Contreras
has produced countless recordings, played on innumerable live dates, and has performed with various jazz groups all around the world. Yet he is still relatively unknown, and probably Mexico's best kept secret in jazz. This 4 track EP limited edition EP presents the wide-ranging musical skills of Tino as a jazz musician. Latin-esque ritual chants in "Orfeo en los Tambores," avant-garde experimentation with a psychedelic subframe in "Orbita," waltz-time jazz in "La Noche de los Dioses" and religiously-themed choral jazz in the song "Credo." Hand-numbered edition of 600 copies.

JM 086EP
Vibes wizard belts out a fiery Latin jazz gem with a version on the flip that's pure fatback funk.
Cal Tjader
was a vibraphonist of Swedish-American heritage based in California, contracted to Fantasy Records. In 1958 he cut the frenzied "Mamblues," a truly amazing piece of bangin' Latin jazz. In 1972 the song was revisited on the soundtrack to the full-length adult-rated cartoon movie
Fritz The Cat
. Only this time lean, mean time-keepin' machine
Bernard "Pretty" Purdie
was in the traps.

Louis Xavier
formed his band
Synchro Rythmic Ecclectic Language
in Paris in the early '70s. Well ahead of his time, the eclecticism is what makes the music so special and unique. Fusing intricate rhythms with tones, harmonies and melodies that reflect an absorption of hundreds of years of diverse ethnic traditions, the language of jazz is chosen as the primary medium to convey Louis' message. Originally released with a picture sleeve, the original 45 is now impossibly rare and practically unknown even in collector's circles.

Subtitled:
Sixteen Heavy-Weight Super-Tough Deep-Funk Ultra-Rarities
. 2006 release. British multi-instrumentalist, producer, DJ, remixer and band leader
Quantic
is known around the world for his blistering stage performances with his band the
Quantic Soul Orchestra
. His ear for a good tune and his feel for a good rhythm didn't come from nowhere -- you see, Quantic has been collecting rare funk 45s for years, and in that time he has absorbed every drum kick, every horn line and every guitar lick into his very soul. It's hard to make good music without drawing upon good influences. So along with Quantic, Jazzman has unearthed some of the very best and rarest funk 45s known (and unknown) to man, totally remastered from the original tapes. These records are pure quality -- the exorbitant prices that collectors will pay for the originals lays testament to that, and will stand the test of time as a barometer of good ol' funky music that is truly inspirational and addictively danceable. It's a shame that the original 45s are so rare, with only a few hundred being pressed in many cases, but it is possible that with such rarity comes excellence, distinction, and quality. Good Things: The Story Of Saadia Records
Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
JMAN 015CD
2007 release. Few record labels have garnered the feverish attentions of soul & funk collectors and DJs as much as
Frank Williams
' Saadia imprint of late-'60s Miami, Florida. In a collecting world dominated by oddball one-offs, random indie obscurities and the occasional major label mishap, a local independent label with a small but consistently impeccable musical output is a truly rare thing. Swingin' Mambos, Soulful Salsa And Funky Rhythms From The Hip Latin Dancefloors Of New York City
. 2008 release. Take tropical rhythms from South America, mix them up with jazz and soul from North America, and the result is a fiery, vibrant musical mix that's at once exciting, passionate and irresistibly danceable. Here's a selection of the finest Latin music that was recorded in the U.S. from the '50s to the '70s, made by American Latinos and destined for the dancefloor. This album takes in the sounds that were coming out of the New York Latin clubs -- mixing up jazz, soul, funk and R&B with driving, hypnotic and sexy Latin rhythms. Drawn from the vaults of Fania, the most prominent Latin record company of all time, Jazzman Records has spent many years listening and dancing before finally selecting these 18 songs from the many thousands available in the huge Fania catalog. And so here it is -- the best Latin sounds from the richest period in Latin music -- taking in hard Latin jazz, sultry Latin soul and bangin' Latin funk -- songs that are as relevant today as they were when they were first recorded, and songs that still work their magic on the dancefloor. JMAN 022CD
2008 release. Jazzman Records releases the greatest hits from funky super-fly
Bobby Williams
. Back in the day there was
James Brown
, and everyone else. His energy, presence and charisma transcended his music, and despite what the music media of today will tell you, he was more influential on the music of the past 40 years than even
The Beatles
. So it's hardly surprising that his fans and followers in the '60s and '70s were so enraptured by his passion and uncompromising style, that it rubbed off on them too. Thousands of bands recorded funk music bearing more than a resemblance to not only his music, but his vocal style too, though none came so close as being a James Brown clone as did Bobby Williams. That's not to say Bobby Williams spent his time perfecting cover versions of "Cold Sweat" and "Sex Machine." What Bobby did was pay homage to the Godfather by creating "Funky Superfly" and "Soul Brother Party." It wasn't exactly a "Brand New Bag," but it was certainly "A Bag Of His Own" -- and he did it so well even James Brown himself gave his respect. This album showcases
Bobby Williams & The Mar-Kings
with their finest and funkiest moments and tells the story of the singer from his impoverished days as a child growing up in Georgia to the sell-out concerts given across the country. The pictures and extensive, original notes tell his story as told by the people who knew him best -- his friends, family and fellow band members. Includes a 6-page booklet with detailed liner notes, label scans, and rare photos.

2008 release. This is the first volume in Jazzman's Holy Grail series, including the rarest and most coveted soul, funk and jazz LPs ever released. And that's what
Uncle Funkenstein
is all about. Never before on eBay and impossible to find, this is an ultra-rare LP from1983 that funk collectors talk about but never see. One of the ultimate private-press funk/jazz LPs, with just a handful of known copies. The original album bears all the hallmarks of a local, private press album -- black and white budget cover, home-made "conceived on a kitchen table" sleeve design, self-produced and on a shoe-string budget. Some of these kinds of records are over-hyped and have all kinds of amazing things said about them -- only for the MUSIC itself to disappoint. Not so with Uncle Funkenstein -- you'll know that from the moment you hit track 1 and the awesome bass blows you away. Horn-driven, piano-smattered classic jazz with shakers full of big-hipped funk. All songs fully licensed, never before reissued, and restored from the original sources. Includes a 8-page color booklet with in-depth liner notes, interviews, and previously-unpublished photographs. . 2008 release. This is Jazzman Records' sixth volume in their collectable 7" compilation series. Unfortunately, the times present us with a situation where not everyone has access to a phonograph which will reveal the sonic delights of these plastic masterpieces. These unlucky individuals have yet to experience the hip-shaking soulful grind of
Sheila Wilkerson
, nor have they become enchanted by the Middle-Eastern twang of Egyptian drummer
Salah Ragab
and his
Cairo Jazz Band
. They have not been seduced by
Della Reese
as she swoons and sways her way around Hollywood's Playboy night club, and nor have they got down to the nitty-gritty, low-down funk of
Bobby Williams
and his
Mar-Kings
. So what is the solution? The recipe for sonic satisfaction lies right here, for on this CD is a fully licensed and restored selection of the healthiest Jazzman 7"s from their original sources, for your aural and dancing delight, many of which have never been reissued before on CD. Frug to

This is the second release in Jazzman's Holy Grail reissue series, featuring those super-ultra, rarest-of-the-rare albums that everyone wants, but nobody can find. Rarely on eBay and extremely hard to find,
Milton Wright
's second album, 1977's
Spaced
is an ultra-rare LP that soul and rare groove collectors often talk about but never get to hear. Recorded by the same enigmatic soul singer who gave us the immortal club classic "Keep it Up," this album was overlooked by his record company and the public because it was released just as superstar status was dawning on fellow label mates
KC & The Sunshine Band
. Overshadowed by the ensuing fame of their sidekicks, the album was suspended in a commercial no-man's-land. Adding insult to injury, the piles of unsold copies were subsequently destroyed in a warehouse fire. A few copies escaped the flames, and a few intrepid collectors have managed to track them down. Those lucky enough to hear one have been astounded that such a quality album of beautiful, soulful music has been allowed to remain unheard and unloved for so long. Unbelievably meticulous funk/soul, with an effortless, mellow vibe. All songs never-before reissued -- previously only available as a highly-collectable LP valued at well over $1,000. Fully licensed and restored from original sources. Housed in the original album artwork in a package that includes a 4-page color booklet with in-depth liner notes from original interviews with previously-unpublished photographs.

JMAN 026CD
Nathan Davis
has been an internationally significant figure in jazz throughout the latter half of the 20th century, but to many, his musical legacy remains little known. This album presents the music of Nathan Davis as it developed through the '60s and '70s, from bop through modal to world sounds and funk. Having turned his back on the U.S., he spent the '60s living in Europe, playing and recording with jazz luminaries such as
Kenny Clarke
,
Art Blakey
and
Eric Dolphy
, before returning at the end of the decade to take up a career teaching in Pittsburgh. This collection includes recordings from his most significant albums as recorded in France, Germany, Yugoslavia, Turkey and the U.S., displaying a variety of musical styles, with performances by Davis on tenor & soprano saxophone and flute. The CD booklet contains previously-unpublished photographs and detailed biographical information, documenting a career which has seen him forge an individual path through the history of post-war jazz and help pioneer jazz education in the U.S. at the University of Pittsburgh. Astonishingly, much of Davis' work has never seen general release in the U.S. or the UK, despite his albums being true gems of modern jazz. Less still has been re-released, and until now, there has never been a representative compilation or career overview. This first-ever anthology of Nathan Davis includes liner notes that contain biographical info and also details of the recordings themselves, as gleaned from interviews with Davis and his professional colleagues. There are also pictures of and information on the original LPs which are now coveted collector's items. Finally, there are answers as to why he left the U.S. to develop a career in Europe, and why he spurned the limelight and opportunity to achieve fame. There's also an update on his current interests and reflections upon his life as professor of Ethnomusicology at the University of Pittsburgh. Spanning a wide range of deep, spiritual jazz, haunting modal melodies, ethnic Turkish jazz and '70s funk, this career compilation will hopefully be the first step toward the wider recognition that his contribution to jazz so richly deserves.

The third in Jazzman's Holy Grail series of releases,
Ricardo Marrero & The Group
's
A Taste
originally released in 1976, is a mouth-watering taste of super Latin soul! With the ingredients ranging from spicy-hot funk to cool, refreshing salsa, it's a tropical breeze of an album that very nearly never happened, now reissued in its entirety with bonus tracks. The story of this album begins in New York during the mid-'70s. It's a story of stolen master tapes, shady deals and records deliberately made NOT to be sold. It's the story of the musical obsession of one man who has devoted his life to music and how he was sold down the river by unscrupulous record industry moguls. It's also the story of one of the rarest, most in-demand and expensive records the world has ever known, with only a handful of copies of this super LP ever being found. Demand for the solid music within has led to a bidding frenzy whenever a copy has surfaced -- the latest one on eBay fetched £2855 -- that's an amazing $4,000! Records don't get much more collectable than that. Why so rare? Jazzman spoke to Ricardo himself to find out, and his remarkable story is revealed in the liners for the first time ever. He speaks about the recording of the album and his disappointment at the stolen tapes, his ill-fated association with boxing legend
Don King
, and the making of the legendary Latin funk anthem "Babalonia," which underwent no less than 4 pressings. Seriously accomplished grooves featuring funky, space-shot synths, driving percussion, swinging brass, flute jams, smooth female vocals, plenty of wah, and so much more. This reissue also includes a 4-page color booklet with in-depth liner notes from original interviews, label scans, rare photographs, and two alternate takes of songs previously only obtainable on 7" vinyl.

This is a reissue of an unbelievably rare private press album that's chock full of the good stuff -- all kinds of funky femme soul, cool n' groovy organ/flute/guitar jazz and a good ol' dose of the blues! It's the fourth installment in Jazzman Records' Holy Grail series, and the label is proud to present Sacramento multi-instrumentalist
John Heartsman
's hopelessly obscure, self-pressed, top-grade funky jazz & soul from 1977, carefully repressed on CD and vinyl (limited to 1,000 vinyl copies only). Now get this -- the original LP has recently hit over $5,000 (yes, over five thousand U.S. dollars!) -- TWICE -- at online auction! Now it's available in its original format with original artwork for a song, but be quick -- as ALL of the previous releases in this series have all sold out very quickly. John Heartsman is known as the guy who played on a thousand R&B hits. From the mid-'50s to the late '60s he recorded countless sessions, backing up the likes of
Jimmy McCracklin
,
Lowell Fulson
,
Sugar Pie DeSanto
, and many, many more. Then, in the early '70s, exhausted from constant touring and seedy late-night gigs, he took up a low-key residency at a small Sacramento jazz club. Here, Heartsman finally got to do his OWN thing. And his thing went down so well with the local audience that he decided to record some material and offer an LP for sale. The album was quickly snapped up by the Basin St. West regulars, and very few escaped the local area. A couple of decades later, and sadly, a little while after Heartsman himself had passed away, a couple of copies surfaced on the funk collectors' scene in L.A. and whispers and rumours of a set of sustained quality funky soul and jazz began circulating slowly. Very few copies have appeared since, making the LP almost as legendary as the long and hidden career of the man himself. And here it is! The full double album, never before reissued and seldom before heard, in its original design. The CD version contains extensive notes, pictures and background history on the LP and John Heartsman himself.

JMAN 031CD
The fifth release in Jazzman Records' illustrious Holy Grail series is a faithful, collector-friendly reissue of Washington, D.C. native
George Smallwood
's only LP -- one of the most sought-after modern soul long-players in existence. As ever, Jazzman presents the LP complete with its original artwork intact and the music lovingly restored -- limited to 1,000 numbered copies on vinyl. The CD issue boasts additional tracks taken from his 45s as well as exclusive in-depth track notes with background info on the man himself and every song included. This is a totally obscure private-press LP of real quality soul music; from up-tempo disco movers to crossover floor-fillers and deep modern ballads, there are several good reasons why this LP has been so prized amongst lovers of progressive, rare soul music. George Smallwood had actually turned his back on a dream of a career in music in order to provide for his family by driving trucks for a living when a terrible accident intervened to rob him of his sight forever. Finding gainful employment hard to come by, Smallwood turned once again to music as both a possible vocation and a remedy for his soul. Setting up a home studio outfit, he buried himself in instrumentation and composition in a more deep and concentrated way than ever before. Eventually assembling a band of talented musicians, he began to record and release his own 45s. Each record he released was distinguished by truly sophisticated production, a smooth sound and lavish depth which marks Smallwood as a real voice in '70s soul music, but one which few up 'til now have ever heard. Even without major success, thankfully Smallwood continued to record and issue short-run records throughout the '70s and into the early '80s, culminating in the majesty of his full length LP
Just 4 You
. With George's blessing and endorsement, Jazzman is thrilled to be able to offer up his wonderful album once again, and it is sure to find a much wider and more receptive audience than it did the first time around -- in fact, the audience it was always intended for -- lovers of deep, groovy music from the heart and soul.

teams up with Jazzman Records and unsurprisingly delivers one of the finest collaborative mixes to date. Digging deep into the 200+ catalog of tunes that is Jazzman and Funk 45, the Beat Junkie seamlessly flips up his own personal selection from the reissues that established the Jazzman labels as the leaders in the record world. Covering the entire spectrum from the start of Jazzman Records in the '90s, and across those genres that just sound better on wax, J-Rocc works as the designer that's been given the best tools in the trade, and the finished product doesn't disappoint. Undoubtedly one of the most important figures in the underground music scene today, Jazzman Gerald has released everything from electronic library treasures to hardcore deep funk bangers, ethnic modal jazz to forgotten soulful masterpieces. From a record stall in Camden, as a collector and seller he remains unparalleled, counting amongst his clientele
Gilles Peterson
,
Madlib
,
Pete Rock
,
Cut Chemist
,
Kenny Dope
and
DJ Shadow
. His reissue labels -- Funk 45, Soul 7 and Jazzman -- have flawlessly brought forgotten and unknown records to the modern day market, and limited runs and collaborations (such as the world's first Serato 7") has meant that Jazzman Records never strays far from the buyer's mind. J-Rocc is a man that needs no introduction. Party rocker, turntablist, collector, producer and general hip-hop icon, his blends, cuts and mixes are a DJ's blueprint. An old-school digger, J-Rocc's sets often turn up unknown beats and breaks, scoured from the bins of whatever country he happens to be playing in. So here's a relentless label at the top of its game, joining up with the undisputed king of the turntables. With a great deal of unspoken respect between the two parties, this harmonious collaboration not only rounds off what Jazzman is all about but also shows off the skills of J-Rocc, working as an introduction into two different worlds that cross-over whenever good music is involved. JMAN 033LP
Jazzman Records presents the result of extensive work and painstaking research into regional U.S. funk obscurities circa 1968-1977,
California Funk
. Twenty-one of the finest, rarest and most desirable funk recordings from the Golden state, put together for the first time with the personal blessing of each and every artist represented herein -- a shoddy bootleg this is not! The package contains in-depth sleeve notes detailing the history of funk and R&B in California and the social conditions which led to the funk explosion of the late '60s. In addition, there are thoroughly researched notes for every individual track, revealing for the first time the hidden stories behind such revered and enigmatic artists as
Leon Gardner
,
Arthur Monday
and
Delores Ealy
. Whereas the musical profiles of cities such as Detroit and New Orleans are well established and much celebrated, the vast cities of Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area have been mostly skimmed over and not given nearly enough attention. The black music from California of the '60s and '70s is especially under-appreciated, seemingly unable to stamp its own musical identity on the world. Yet during this time, many artists were busily plying their trade at a grassroots level in L.A. and the Bay, releasing 45s literally by hand or through small independents. Today, many of those very 45s fetch hundreds and sometimes thousands of pounds at online auction. Following on from their previous funk collections from Texas, Florida, the Midwest and the Carolinas, Jazzman applied themselves to their most ambitious and far-reaching project yet -- to source and compile the best vintage funk that California had to offer. From the rugged street funk of Arthur Monday to the Latino flavors of
Enrique Olivarez
, from the soulful jazz grooves of blues legend
Johnny Heartsman
to the aggressive politicizing of
King Solomon
, there is real diversity on offer, here. The double LP is presented on two pieces of 180 gram virgin vinyl, lavishly housed in a double gatefold sleeve with full-color inners, label scans and extensive liner notes, featuring many previously-unseen photos of the bands and musicians involved.

Easily one of the most coveted and sought-after of all jazz LPs is the elusive Holy Grail that is
Roy Brooks
'
Ethnic Expressions
. It's not just rarity that makes a record of this nature so desirable, nor is it the compelling music within -- sometimes, like a Van Gogh or a Picasso, it's the personality of the artist himself that's inexorably entwined with the record itself that lends a fascinating, mesmeric and mythical quality that simply can't be contrived. The sixth release in Jazzman's Holy Grail series is an attentive reissue of one of Detroit drummer Roy Brooks' two LPs for the tiny Im-Hotep label out of New York. This Jazzman release is in conjunction with P-Vine Records of Tokyo, whose Japanese reissue has already vanished with only a handful having reached these shores late in 2009.
Ethnic Expressions
was recorded live in NYC in 1973, and exhibits a powerful message of black consciousness and spiritual freedom. This is post-
Coltrane
progressive jazz of the highest order! With a cry to his African roots, Brooks' music combines modal, rhythmic and Afro-centric jazz with politics, spirituality and positive vibes. The result is deep, esoteric spiritual jazz that any fan into real-deal, vibrant jazz will require as essential listening. Bobby Jackson
. You won't find the name Bobby Jackson in the jazz books. Yet here is a remarkable man who did more than anyone to promote live jazz in his hometown of Minneapolis, risking everything to open a venue for jazz lovers and putting on such luminaries as
Freddie Hubbard
,
Roland Kirk
and
Elvin Jones
. In so doing, he rode the wave of financial insecurity, dealt with problems involving drugs, the law and the police, not to mention the issues and temperaments of the musicians themselves. Yet he still managed to keep things together enough to record a truly deep and inspired album with his band -- although it took another 8 years before it was finally released, albeit in minimal quantities and with zero distribution! And so, the seventh release in Jazzman's Holy Grail series tells the story of Bobby Jackson and his Café Extra-Ordinaire. The music is deep, modal and progressive jazz. The story is one of bearded, coffee-drinking jazz-heads, Elvin Jones shedding tears, silver foil backdrops, and Jazzman also reveals what happened when a young man named
Prince
ventured into the café one day with the intention to sit in on a jam session! The CD also contains a 12-page color booklet with previously-unpublished pictures provided by Bobby Jackson himself. Interviews with Jackson and his band help to make up the extensive liner notes, telling the engaging story of the Café Extra-Ordinaire and all who took part in it.

present a deep, cross-genre constellation of sounds that spans sweet reggae to soul balladry, and stretches from the magical Carib-funk-jazz of "Negril," through the gold-standard funk classic "Ghetto Funk," to the deep acoustic cut of the title track. An essential release for fans of funk, blaxploitation OSTs and reggae, the CD release also comes equipped with detailed historical notes which finally clear up the mystery of the original film. Another "Deadly Sting" from Jazzman Records.

Of all the Holy Grail LPs that Jazzman Records has reissued so far, this is quite possibly the rarest of the rare, with a miniscule 50 copies of the original album having been pressed up 40 or so years ago. It's a miracle that any copies at all have survived since then, but Jazzman has jumped through hoops to ensure that not only have they faithfully reproduced the original, but they have done it with a quality that cannot be rivaled.
Marvin "Hannibal" Peterson
will be a familiar name to '70s jazz enthusiasts, but his career started with the
Soulmasters
in Texas back in the '60s. As bandleader and trumpeter, they were a popular outfit around the Texas nightclub circuit with their own brand of funky jazz, soul ballads and Rn'B showmanship. This album manages to squeeze in all three, including the extended funky jazz workout "Our Groove," the haunting ballad "Five Foot Even" and finishing off with a cracking version of
James Brown
's "I Can't Stand It." For lovers of soul, jazz, funk and all things in between, this album is for you. Includes a 6-page color booklet with extensive notes, interviews and previously-unpublished photographs.

And when one does surface, a figure over $2,000 isn't out of the ordinary for a copy to change hands. As a result, it's not only the vast majority of collectors and soul fans that have been unable to enjoy the music, but for over 30 years the band themselves have not had the satisfaction of having their pride and joy felt, heard and enjoyed. So Jazzman Records decided to put things right. With help and assistance from members of The Brief Encounter themselves, the label has made available this inspirational album that displays a wide showcase of soulful talent from funky, rare grooves to beautiful ballads. Included in the package is an 8-page color booklet of detailed liner notes from Jazzman's exclusive interviews, revealing the story behind the band and their enigmatic recording of the

In the olden days, the music business was a torrid set of affairs run by hustlers, sharks and gangsters. Broken promises, deceit and corruption was the order of the day, and to be thrown out of a window was seen as a rite of passage into the business. Amongst all this hustle and bustle was the murky world of the "tax scam" label. Set up for wealthy individuals to invest in as a means to take advantage of a tax loophole, labels such as Tiger Lilly, Guinness and Baby Grand (upon which
Terea
was released in 1977) released many hundreds of obscure titles. The records themselves never saw a proper release and were often dumped in cut-out bins or taken straight to the dump. As such, many of these LPs, including this album by Californian soul outfit Terea, remain extremely scarce and are now highly-prized collector's items. In his liner notes to Jazzman's reissue of the Terea album, producer
Dennis Dreith
lifts the lid off of the shady business of the tax scam labels. Not only that, but he tells us the story of Terea and the dedicated musicians who freely recorded the music they wanted to record without obligation to the record companies and A&R men. It was in these circumstances that the Terea LP was recorded, a work of art, if only for the utterly joyous "Pretty Bird." Includes a 6-page booklet with liner notes written by Terea's producer Dennis Dreith and previously-unpublished photographs.

With his career spanning the best part of a century, Gilson has made music with a who's-who of European and American jazz greats, has written, performed on and recorded innumerable film scores, albums and 45s, ran the Palm jazz record label... yet despite all this, the French jazzman remains criminally under-appreciated by so many jazz fans. Look him up on the internet -- there isn't even a Wikipedia entry! Jazzman addresses this unfortunate situation by releasing 19 songs spanning decades of his recording career. High points include the awesome modal masterpiece "Modalité Pour Mimi"; "Chakan" and "Agnus Dei," which feature a cathedral choir, and lesser-known private recordings such as "Valerie's Waltz" and "Valse A Quatre Temps." Jazzman also includes field recordings made on his trip to Madagascar, including a percussive version of the

Pharoah Sanders

Jazzman's never-ending mission to reveal the under-appreciated-yet-worthy-of-attention jazz masters around the world has now taken them far away and across the sea to Mexico. Not the first port of call you'd consider if you were looking for hard bop or modal jazz, but here they have found an incredible jazz drummer whose career has spanned over 5 decades, and who is still playing to this day. In that time,
Tino Contreras
has produced countless recordings, played innumerable live dates and performed with various jazz groups all around the world. Yet he is still relatively unknown, and probably Mexico's best-kept jazz secret. During his far-reaching travels over the years, all kinds of weird and wonderful sounds have come to influence the music of the imaginative Mexican jazzman. Hear Latinesque ritual chants on "Orfeo En Los Tambores," insane percussion on the high-tempo jazz-dance favorite "What Is This Thing Called Love," avant-garde experimentation with a psychedelic subframe on "Orbita," exotic waltz-time jazz on "Visnu" and religiously-themed chamber jazz with choir on "Credo," Santo" and "Gloria." Not only that, but noted influences from India, Egypt, Turkey and Brazil create a most fascinating jazz album, the likes of which you will most likely never have heard before. Jazzman tells the story of the maverick that is Tino Contreras, showcasing his unique and fascinating career with 16 tracks, a 12-page color CD booklet. Label:
JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK)
Format:

Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
JMAN 045CD
Jazzman presents a whole load of raucous, rollicking and rambunctious '50s/'60s RnB bangers, blues boppers, jukebox faves and rompin', stompin' RnB dancers. The Jukebox Jam club night began in Summer 2007 as a monthly celebration of the authentic U.S. rhythm & blues of yesteryear. Two years later, the club's founder
Liam Large
linked up with Jazzman to release high-quality, short-run 7" singles of the often obscure R&B music which the club continues to thrive on. Jazzman had already carved a niche for itself with the label's many soul, funk n' jazz 45s, but here was the opportunity to work a new furrow in vintage Black American music, turning an already clued-up and tuned-in client base of hipsters, diggers and full-on record nerds onto the seemingly endless charms of rockin' blues, greasy RnB, jump blues and popcorn. Just as the Jukebox Jam club itself saw a fair few copycat enterprises spring forward in its wake, the label itself has been similarly influential in shaping the tastes of those who were yet to be introduced to the vast RnB reservoir, as well as sharpening and widening the palettes of the more journeyed enthusiast. This is due largely to the careful selection and programming of releases. Not merely picking the records with the most obvious crowd potential, the Jukebox Jam releases have often traded liberally in the unexpected and the unique. This album is the first full-length volume in the series. Founder and DJ Liam Large pulls together some selections from the 45 series and adds a further 8 songs. It's a set which manages to be both diverse and yet totally coherent in spectrum. There are a few somber, downbeat moments here, but even these come with a seductive groove and finger-snapping back beat and overall, this is a selection very much geared, like the club itself, to get your pulse rising and feet jumping. Includes extensive original liner notes and never-before-seen pictures, photos and images in a 24-page booklet.

As the '60s progressed, cultural and political revolutions occurred both in the U.S. and in Europe. Jazz was both a victim and a savior, with radical developments in the music occurring on both continents. In the U.S., artists took control of their own musical destiny as small labels broke away from the mainstream, expressing new and creative visions of freedom and peace against a backdrop of civil unrest, repression and war. In '60s Europe, the jazz community forged ahead with a different revolution; that of breaking away from mere emulation of their American counterparts. A distinctive, European jazz sound began to develop that combined traditional music from across Europe and around the world with the creative freedom so abundant in American jazz. Over time, the most forward-thinking creative talents of the post-
Coltrane
European jazz generation crafted and nurtured sophisticated and multi-faceted styles of jazz that were as radical as they were beautiful, giving modern jazz a characteristically European flavor. The music is a heady mix indeed; stirring jazz overtures with orchestra and choir, festival performances recorded live from the grassy heartlands of central Europe, modal montages inspired by pilgrimages to Asia and Africa, experiments in rhythm and sound where modern jazz meets traditional Balkan and flamenco folk music. This is spiritual jazz, European-style. All tracks fully licensed and digitally restored from the original master tapes. Includes a 16-page color booklet with in-depth liner notes, album cover scans and previously-unpublished photographs.

Suffused with spiritual uplift but lacking any saccharine in either content or production values,
Azanyah
communicates in a language that harks back to the great message bearers of an earlier time: the musical language of
Coltrane
,
Pharaoh
and their fellow travelers, musicians who had journeyed deep into the wellsprings of the African-American and African traditions, and returned with complex, burnished artifacts that spoke of the highest truths with incandescent urgency. Its musical message underpinned by the deep pulse of the eponymous
Mamaniji Azanyah
's bass,
The One
is a document that seems somehow out of time: it comes as a surprise that this album was recorded in the '80s, although
The One
is not a nostalgic throwback to the revolutionary period a couple of decades earlier. Rather, it is part of a long continuum of committed visionary sound, drawing strength from the same sources that inspired its forebears, and walking on the same paths toward enlightenment. Raw, earthy, deep, spiritual jazz at its finest. All tracks fully licensed and digitally restored from the original master tapes. Includes comprehensive background and liner notes with the blessing of Mamaniji Azanyah himself. Also features loads of amazing, previously-unpublished photographs.

Price:

Catalog #:
JMAN 048CD
Every once in a while, a record presents itself so defiant in its refusal of categorization that it becomes the bane of those poor vinyl archaeologists whose business it is to file and classify. The aptly-named
The Naked Truth
(1975) is one such artifact; a wayfaring stray of an album that weaves its insouciant magic through the edgelands of sound. The musical provenance is palpable -- an electric blend of spiritual jazz, rhythmic black psychedelia and far-out exotica -- but where it's headed remains a mystery, echoing shapes so strange that they fit no musical crevice. This is an album whose grooves are slow and deep, with a languid, balmy, and irresistibly pensive aura. It's moody: cosmic abstractions ooze from every sweet inflection, lulling arpeggios lose themselves in a haze of forgetfulness. The late
Owen Marshall
and his band run wild over this record, and their experiments with sound are compelling, occasionally bizarre, and chock-full of strange paradoxes. So much of what can be heard here is playful, free, imbued with a sense of wonder and pure joy usually ascribed to that most natural genius of the imagination -- the child. And yet there is a knowingness at work here -- a certain subdued polish tempering these otherwise passionate excursions. The full force of this can be seen in Marshall's use of instruments; among the saxophone, the synth, the percussion, and the electric piano, you will hear the "Hose-a-phone," the "Tube-phone," "Ply-tar," and "Boonet." These are instruments that Owen built himself -- in order, he said, to enable him to "tap the very depths of his creative resources... to make music fun to play, and entertaining to listen to." This is a private-press album that begs to be public.
The Naked Truth
is an album that wants to be listened to, it wants to be heard and take your hand and lead you far, far away -- it wants to wander with you deep into the woods of imagination, just as Owen himself must have done all those years ago. All tracks fully licensed and digitally restored from the original master tapes. Includes original liner notes written with the assistance of the Marshall family.

Jazzman Records brings you a global industry first, the
Serato Control Tone
on the coolest and most popular musical format yet invented, 7" 45rpm vinyl. Not only do you now have access to the cutest control vinyl in the world, but when you flip that bad boy over, you have one of the rarest funk 45s on the planet,
Mr. Clean
's version of the
Marvin Gaye
ultra-classic, "What's Going On." Serato has revolutionized the way DJs play their records. Instead of playing a normal record in the normal way, DJs play a special vinyl record that has the "Serato control tone" pressed in the grooves instead of the music. Using normal turntables wired up to a laptop, the DJ can use Serato software to play these control tone records, and what you hear is the music the DJ has chosen, which is stored on the laptop. The records play using a stylus like any normal record, and the advantage is that just like with normal records, you can handle them to mix and scratch. The software is recognized as a leader in the field of digital DJing and has been adopted by many of the top DJs in the world.

A Collection Of Enlightening & Liberating Spiritual Jazz 45s
.
James Spaulding
is a jazz flautist and saxophonist who has appeared on countless recordings over the past 50 years. But his recordings as leader are few and far between -- a travesty, as the 45 re-released here is as astounding as the beauty of the label of his solitary East 45; why didn't he make more records under his own name?
The Lightmen
was a loose group of musicians from Texas led by
Bubba Thomas
. They recorded several 45s and LPs, all of which remain highly collectible, not just because of their rarity, but because of the sheer quality of the deep, spiritual jazz etched in their grooves.
James Tatum
is still performing as a pianist with his jazz group and has a great deal of involvement with education and the church. His two highly collectible LPs yielded no 45s, but we are here to put that right. A triple 45 jazz box -- three jazz 45s of the highest caliber, with gatefold sleeves, pictures and liner notes and a custom-made foldout cover with original artwork by
Ski Williams
. Fully licensed and endorsed by the original artists.

SOUL7 015EP
Jazzman Records presents another modern soul rarity -- recorded in upstate New York in 1973. Fully-licensed and restored from the original master tapes, this pressing run is limited to only 500 copies worldwide. When 4 close friends got together in the small town of Rome, NY to form a band, little did they know that the music they made would still be raising dancefloor dust over 30 years later. Self-funded and pressed in only 500 copies back in 1973, the 45 featuring the catchy "Give Me One More Chance" was sold from the very bandstands they performed from while gigging up and down the East Coast. Another single did appear later, but zero distribution and little knowledge about the workings of the record biz meant the lucrative recording contract they hoped for failed to appear. Members Dean and Vincent still perform to this day, as the duo act

You can count the known copies of the original on one hand -- one copy recently fetched a healthy figure of over $6000 at action. Fully licensed and restored from the original master tapes, with a pressing of 500 copies only worldwide.

Another couple of gems from the
Barbara Lynn
repertoire. Side A is a huge modern soul spin with dense production on the intro and a chorus that's broken up by a sparse open verse. Originals are difficult to locate and reach upwards of $500. Mastered straight from the tapes. Side B features cracking drums, guitar and a killer vocal. This alternate, taken right from the master tapes, is even more direct than the original and sounds as if it was recorded yesterday.
