"A single sheet of paper would hardly be enough to describe who is this Thomas Fehlmann and how wonderful his new record. Though you could also expect that everyone knows that this guy from Switzerland is one of the most dazzling figures in German pop culture and Pioneer electronic pop music. As a member of Palais Schaumburg, he side-parted punk and catapulted German pop music out of its impossibility. At times when the toilets at Tresor were new, Thomas Fehlmann and Moritz von Oswald, both used to shake hands with Detroit Techno. He was co-producer of outstanding albums e.g. by Blake Baxter and Eddie Flashin Folwkes, and later, with the Orb, he became chill-out-history. To cut a long story short, in the last two and a half decades Thomas Fehlmann has taken part in the decisive revolutions of music and sound and now, with 'Whistle', he comes back and on to the dance-floor in a most impressive way. "The original version of this gorgeous schlager techno track, released in august 2001 on Kompakt's Total 3, would put a smile on a lot of people's faces. Apart from the reworked original version, you'll get two sensational remixes: The one from Frankfurt's high-aesthete, super hipster, club- and label-owner with a three-letter name: Ata. Since the very beginning, his Playhouse label has always been a guarantee for finest German House music. It's his first (!) remix ever and his first studio work since the legendary first Playhouse release 'Holy Garage' in 1993. The 'Playhouse Mix' turns the original version into a mega-hip, late-night monster and reminds a bit of the great Larry Levan and Metro Area's congenious adaption of early-80s disco music. "Early in 2002 Justus Köhncke's second 12" for Kompakt. '2 After 909' became something of an immediate and what proved to be highly enduring anthem for the Minimal Techno scene, still a fixture in jockeys' boxes to this day. Justus showed himself to be the master of suspense, Daft Punkish electrofunk building tension and excitement with enormous breakdowns and pickups designed to cause pandemonium at the biggest parties. Early words on this twelve, indicated that when Michael Mayer dropped this on his recent visit to Fabric/London, the audience went absolutely ballistic. The title cut is oscillating house-funk-disco shrouded in an intoxicated sheen, reaching an ambient stillpoint until a huge break ensues, as it threatens to reach crescendo point, it continues -- the feeling's almost too much -- it drops and Justus sweeps all before him. "To make a long, long story short: this record was meant to be released a year ago on Nitsa -- the label and also one of the world's most wonderful clubs based in Barcelona. But due to thousands of mishaps and blows, this record has never been released so far, apart from various promos mercilessly hammered by their lucky owners. Ferenc is Nitsa's resident DJ Fra and his co-partner Autan, both sharing a mutual passion for early-90ies Brooklyn bass, also called hardcore, with releases on labels like Nu Groove, City or Bonebreaks and produced by Lenny Dee, Joey Beltram, How & Little and the scuffproof Frankie Bones. 'Yes Sir, I Can Hardcore' is meant to be a homage to the era when hardcore was not yet gabber and simply was the most intensive form of house music. "Without exaggeration we can say: there were (and are) two summer-hits on Kompakt, on whose everybody can agree. Remixes by M.Mayer and Lawrence. "'Happiness', the most splendid track of the currently released Superpitcher album Here Comes Love, was indispensable to get remixed. To increase or reinterpret the dramatic beauty of the original, was a difficult job. Difficult but also tempting. It was not necessary to ask Michael Mayer twice and Lawrence was quasi finished before he was in demand. The result is two excellent affirmations to the hope, that a remix can be much more than just recycling. The mix by Mayer rebundles the energy of the original and couples 'Happiness' with a lot of craziness. Without losing the primal warmth, he drives your feelings by roller coaster and hits you in the middle of your heart and soul. It got a modern noble rave-tune. Please wack out to it with a big smile on your face. Hamburgs´ expert for poetic techno is called Lawrence. His albums on his own label Dial are a class of its own and certainly belong to the most emotional moments of the newer club-history. Yet, as an exception, we are not talking about the traditional objective values like: a house, a child, a tree. If you have an artistic bent, it is more about the question of how to express all the ideas a creative mind is obsessed by. When it comes to Justus Köhncke, he is actually obsessed by a helluvalot of things. This guy is really like a sponge and seems to have soaked in the whole history of pop music with all its inherent, structural beauty and styles. Five years after his debut album Spiralen der Erinnerung (ICI Rec.) and two years after his album Was ist Musik, it was high time to wring out the sponge again that was full of impressions he has collected during his numerous spectacular freestyle DJ-performances all over the world and where he combined both, Kompakt's techno message with the disco jewels of the last three decades in a breathtaking way. And he is full of knowledge that originates from his regular, quasi-scientific analyses of his all-time, most favourite songs. Köhncke is someone who sometimes loves to pass composing C parts as his hobby. (the C part is the part of a song that is neither strophe nor refrain; most of the time, it is the third part of a song indicating the final refrain; the C part is often combined with changing harmonies. A wonderful tool, but unfortunately, it has almost disappeared since the late 1980s in favour of more clubby structures). And it is this highly emotional combination of exploratory spirit with unlimited obsession that makes Justus Köhncke the Alexander von Humboldt of pop music. Doppelleben seems to integrate again the apparent contrasts in a most natural way: 'Schwabylon' is hard and elegant cruising disco funk Daft Punk would have loved to add to their recent album; Herz aus Papier is a cosy ballad called made in cooperation with Barbara Morgenstern; an there is the intoxicating, exotic and psychedelic version of 'The answer is yes' and of course Köhncke's famous brand, his German electronic pop music for the charts of tomorrow ('Wo bist du', 'Alles nochmal'). Heart of the album is the 10-minutes disco monster track 'Elan', because in this track everything starts to vibrate that has made Justus Köhncke the noblest disco knight of modern times. An oscillating promise, a great, seducing gesture, but the promised redemption remains unattainable. Because the disco act has to last all night long. "Bayer Leverkusen's notorious right-footy is back. When in 1999 he was terrorizing the roads of the Bundesliga, Kompakt's primary rock Reinhard Voigt was feeling so inspired, that he had to dedicate him a track. 'Robson Ponte' was one of the first hits on the young label at that time and since then it's not only being hammered in clubs, but also in the Bayarena, Leverkusen's giant football stadium. It became an evergreen just like artificial turf. While these lines are being written Frankfurt and Cologne guys are celebrating their advancement to the premier league. Adequate to this, the techno heavyweights from Rhein and Main join eachother for the 'Robson Ponte' remix-cup. Despite friendly games they really come to the point in both playing times. Reinhard 'iron foot' Voigt, is highly motivated and takes all the risks and introduces his much dreaded 'blood-straddle'. Foul! Firecrackers fly on the pitch. The public goes off the rails. Frankfurt 's alter ego reacts with sensitivity, But they don't show nerves and counterattack with a brave move. They turn Voigt's original vocal-sample into a freaky bassline. Technique tops muscles. Very Brazilian, indeed... it's a rough but breathtaking match. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Final whistle. (time for the commercials... and to get a fresh beer.)

"On the 30th anniversary of Kompakt's Speicher series, a childhood dream has finally come true. Thanks to a wonderful coincidence and weeks and months of arduous research, we could get the license to release two of the most influential and immortal techno tracks ever on one record. Tricky Disco and GTO are projects both realized by sound artists Michael Wells and Lee Newman. From the early 1990s to the mid-1990s, they came up with splashy tracks under numerous pseudonyms as for example John & Julie, Church of Exstasy or Technohead (exactly, the gabber evergreen track 'I Wanna Be A Hippie' released on Mokum!), until Lee died of cancer in 1995 -- at the height of their career. In 1990, Tricky Disco was released as WAP 007 on the young Warp Label and, together with stylistically-similar approaches of label colleagues like LFO or Sweet Exorcist, they revolutionized the club scene. A new sound was born: the Bleep! There are only a few sounds time could not harm thanks to their simplicity and conciseness. Next to the 303 and the saw-tooth sounds, the Bleep is probably the only and certainly the nicest sound. Bleeps are happiness and lightness. Bleeps are good, they are sweet, little buddies. GTO's 'Pure' is listed in the same ranking. Also released in 1990, it represented the kick into a great future for the (soon) Belgium cult label GoBang! The bass line still moves mountains, even if the obscure vocal samples make you smile today. It is true: Speicher 30 is pure nostalgia and above all, it means love of the still most thrilling music of the world. And it pays homage to one of the most dazzling characters in the world of techno music. Thank you, Lee."

"Hello and welcome to Kompakt's summer holiday program. We asked ourselves, why ist it that even when the sun is shining all day at the beach of Santa Whatsoever everybody is playing dumb pumping stuff instead of just letting it go for a moment in favor of something nice'n'peaceful? Can it be so difficult to relax? What the heck could happen if somebody stops the bass kick for 5 to 8 minutes? We assure you: nothing to be afraid of, really... We felt it's necessary to contribute something non-pumping to this summer 2005. At least something not-so-pumping. Even if our chosen lifeguards are responsible for some of the finest dancefloor rockets around this time they put all effort into creating something not-so-pumping in order to make this 'Speicher' edition a very particular one. With 'Wombat' the Wighnomy Bros deliver their most wicked bassline so far. It wiggles in such a fresh and exhilarating way that it's almost a shame when it makes way for the breakdown. But then this 'Love Pad' drops in, builds up this heavenly tsunami of emotions. You'll certainly feel more than compensated. 'Wombat' continues where 'Wurz & Blosse,' which is probably the most played 'Speicher' track ever, started last summer. Awe! (by the way, wombats are thoroughly likeable Australian marsupials which take about fourteen days to digest one meal. That's what we call relaxed!) Kompakt's king of all taboo-breakers invited his dear friend and band member Fred Heimermann to bring along his guitar in order to do something no one else would ever dare: They recorded an ambient track for 'Speicher!'"

Many will be surprised and ask: 'Why? Enzian is but just a small flower'. That is precisely why it has to be explained here: according to Pliny the Elder, Gentian is named after Gentius (180-68 bc), the king of Illyria, is said to have discovered its healing properties. But the border between use and misuse is, as generally known, quickly overstepped. They also say the Gentian Schnaps has magic power...Stardiver is Jörg Burger -- the Modernist's millionth pseudonym. Appropriately the track is called 'Borderline'. That is to say that the borderline-syndrome is a personality disorder. Borderline personality disorder (bpd) is defined within psychiatry, and some other fields, as a disorder characterized primarily by emotional dysregulation, extreme 'black and white' thinking in some areas, and disrupted relationships. The name originated with the idea that individuals exhibiting this type of behavior were on the 'borderline' between neurosis and psychosis. But like we care, as long as such music can come out of it. 'Borderline' is blazing and is chugging like a freshly polished steamship. Ahoy."
