Françoiz Breut is the original pioneer of the Nouvelle Scène Française. Her career began modestly, away from the limelight, as a background singer for her former partner Dominique A. When A eventually encouraged her to start her own career in 1997, Breut quickly became the main ambassador of the new French scene among foreign audiences. Since then her inimitable voice has inspired countless well known song writers to contribute songs to her first three albums. With her fourth album, À L'aveuglette, Françoiz Breut is breaking new ground: the songs were conceived in cooperation with musicians of her long time live-band and this time she has written all the lyrics herself. The result is a much more homogenous album than its predecessors and -- perhaps for this very reason -- an even better one. Her powerful voice opened many doors. If it wasn't for Françoiz Breut, we might never have heard about this wonderful thing we now call "Nouvelle Chanson": a musical genre, which was defined by her presence and made popular across the world by her voice. Breut's unique voice was an ideal ambassador for the fascinating French scene and it put the names of the songwriters who worked for her on the international map: Dominique A, Katerine, Yann Tiersen and Jérôme Minière -- to name but the most famous. Bands like Herman Düne or Calexico went on to record songs with Breut, a figure as influential as Howe Gelb (Giant Sand) even wrote an ode to her ("Letter to Françoiz"). Dominique A once said: "Everybody loves Françoiz," and he wasn't just talking about musicians but about audiences everywhere. A had understood a simple truth: Nobody can resist the sound of this voice.

2009 release. Italian singer and musical aesthete Joe Barbieri enlarges the borders of our musical cosmos with Maison Maravilha's even greater stylistic diversity. The sound spectrum of cantautori, bossanova and pop is enriched by elements of chanson, fado and tango. He also emphasized the already prevalent jazz-color. While his previous release, In Parole Povere, offered proof that there is yet still great Italo-pop, Maison Maravilha offers greater evidence for this fact. Included is a beautiful duet with Buena Vista Social Club singer Omara Portuondo. In spite of the greater stylistic range, Barbieri's sophomore album seems more coherent then this predecessor. If nothing else it could be for the gently refinement of the sound through a string orchestra. The interwoven arrangements offer a good hint on the search for Babieri's source of inspiration: Maison Maravilha emerged from the spirits of '50s and '60s movie soundtracks.

The fact that Le Pop 5 continues to have such a fresh and innovative sound is due to the continuing metamorphosis of the strong European music scene. Despite the growing popularity of artists like Dominique A, Mathieu Boogaerts and Benjamin Biolay , they continue to develop their style. This is well demonstrated by Dominique A, pre-cursor of the scene, whose "La Fin D'un Monde" is a beautiful, almost classical melody produced in a fascinating way and creating a perfect ambience for Dominique A's inimitable voice. Mathieu Boogaerts came up with a more radical change: departing from his habitual songwriting technique, he has turned to composing rhythm structures on a drum kit. His song "Allez" exhibits his artful and wily pop style. By contrast, Benjamin Biolay has stayed within the tradition of the scene's patriarch, Serge Gainsbourg -- although in doing so, he reveals his very own grandeur as songwriter and composer. Vincent Delerm re-emerges as laid-back and confident as ever with "Je Pense A Toi." Le Pop 5 also features the world premiere of "La Plage," an atmospheric duet by Bastien Lallemant and Holden singer Armelle Pioline, in the best tradition of Nick Cave's murder ballads. Other artists include Coeur de Pirate, Arizona Marianne Dissard and Naim Amors.

2010 release. Andrew Collberg's On The Wreath alludes to a lot of famous songwriters and bands from music history: Lennon, Kinks, Byrds, Dylan, Young. The fact that the album is still dated in the here and now is due to the influence eighties guitar pop in the eighties up to now - starting with REM, the Go-Betweens and Galaxie 500 up to Elliott Smith and Badly Drawn Boy. Compare Collberg's album with current songwriters, and it's his musical gamut that really stands out. The vibrant album cover reflects the diversity and vitality of his style. Optimistic up-tempo-songs for which the label of guitar pop was invented, beside slower tracks and melodic ballads. It is no coincidence that the opener "Clouds Of All Your Rain" is reminiscent of the Go-Betweens' legendary rain song "Spring Rain"." The intense "To The Road" starts out with a tune similar to Bob Dylan's "New Morning" and develops into a euphoric pop song. "Clementine" unfolds in exemplary fashion; the track starts like a ballad with a sluggish beat which gets twisted into a classical mid-tempo-groove, finally unfolding its beauty in the chorus. Finesses like these that can be found in plenty: In "man in the moose suit" Collberg seems to resurrect John Lennon. Songs like "Garbage Day" or "The Tide Below" offer a glimpse into the Scandinavian pop tradition and remind us of bands like El Perro del Mar, The Cardigans or Kings of Convenience. These comparisons are obvious: yet regardless of which reference one draws upon, the carefree, happy-go-lucky mood of Andrew Collbergs work is what stands out. These songs broadcast - also due to the characteristic warm voice of the artist - a natural beauty which touches and seduces the heart. It defines Andrew Collberg's style and also holds high addiction potential for the audience.
