Artist: EARDRUM
Title: Last Night
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: BAY 007CD
"This long awaited debut album by Eardrum is comprised of ten percussion dominated rhythmic leviathans, the missing link between 23 Skidoo, Afrobeat, and Jon Hassell's Fourth World Project. Recorded live, the album applies the pioneering attitudes of Lee Perry, King Tubby, and Teo Macero. The studio becomes an instrument of manipulation, warping the musicians contributions and electrifying the groove, fusing African concepts of rhythm with dub and electronics. Eardrum are Lou Ciccotelli (Laika, Spleen, Mass, God, Ice) and Richard Olatunde Baker (Cath Coffey, NT, Akure Wall). They've previously had a single on Soul Static Sound and appeared on Macro Dub Infection II and the Leaf sampler CD Osmosis."

Artist: YOKOTA, SUSUMU
Title: Image 1983-1998
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: BAY 009CD
Now mid-line price. "Yokota has been earning heaps of praise for his super-funky blend of house, techno, disco, jazz and breaks, with releases on Japan's Sublime Records, among others. The Leaf Label has licensed Image 1983-1998, a collection of mainly acoustic and oddly moving instrumental and vocal pieces from Yokota's own Skintone label for release outside Japan. It's a very personal project, representing a a very different side to his musical persona to the one you may already be aware of. Five of the tracks were recorded with guitars and organs in 1983-4, the remainder were inspired by those songs and were recorded in 1997-8. Yokota is proving increasingly difficult to pin down, which can only be a good thing as far as we're concerned. On this album you can hear the influences of Felt, Durutti Column, Jim O'Rourke, Mouse On Mars, Satie and Cluster tied together like a Fellini soundtrack, the tracks are mainly guitar, organ a bit of vocal utterances."

Artist: YOKOTA, SUSUMU
Title: Magic Thread
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: BAY 011CD
"Though probably better known for his funked-up techno and house (and jazz, disco, drum & bass, etc), Susumu Yokota received fulsome praise for the Image 1983-1998 album released by The Leaf Label in1999. Magic Thread was actually released in Japan before Image, in a limited edition of just 500 copies on CD -- the very first release on Yokota's own Skintone label. Magic Thread has a more electronic feel to it than Image, but is still possessed of the plaintive melodies and haunting minimalist dynamics that made Image such an unexpected treat. After Ken Ishii, Yokota was the first Japanese techno artist to release music in Europe. Since then he has enjoyed a prolific career as both a DJ and recording artist, working under a host of pseudonyms, including 246, Ringo, Prism and Stevia. With his star currently very much in the ascendant in his native Japan and continental Europe, Yokota has begun to make an impression in the UK with his two most recent albums on Sublime, 1998 and 1999.

Artist: FAULTLINE
Title: Colder Closer
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: BAY 012CD
"Debut album from David Kosten's Faultline, following two singles on the highly acclaimed Fused & Bruised label. Welding live instrumentation (strings, xylophone, trumpet) to fractured, scorched, digital rhythms, found sounds, and voices, Kosten has created music that's both sonically formidable and emotionally involving. Title tract features a Dennis Hopper sample ok'd by Hopper and David Lynch, both of whom requested copies of the album."

Artist: ELLIS, ROB
Title: Music For The Home
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: BAY 015CD
"Ellis is best known for his collaborations with PJ Harvey (since her first album Dry and co-produced her new album), has recorded two albums as Spleen (Swarfinger) and is also part time member of Laika. The album started life as a piano solo album, gradually evolving into something more orchestrated, taking in music boxes and other wind instruments, as well as cello and classical guitar. Scott Walker has already sampled a track from the album and used it as a backing track on his contribution to the recent Ute Lemper album, and Brian Eno has given the album a personal endorsement."

Artist: YOKOTA, SUSUMU
Title: Grinning Cat
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: BAY 017CD
"Grinning Cat is the fourth album to be licensed by Leaf from Susumu Yokota's own Skintone label in Japan. It follows last year's splendid Sakura, currently the highest selling Leaf release ever. To date we have released the critically lauded Yokota albums Image 1983-1998, Magic Thread and Sakura, as well as the Mix remix 12". But it's not all one-way traffic with Yokota 's appreciation of The Leaf Label resulting in the recent Leaf Compilation CD on Skintone."

Artist: EARDRUM
Title: Side Effects
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: BAY 018CD
"Eardrum's second album, Side Effects, is a testament to the methods of improvisation, Afro beat free jazz, musique concrete and carnival street music as well as the insularity of studio manipulatio. lnspiration comes from Miles Davis, Lee Perry, Fela Kuti, the limitless influence of African music and the aural chaos of London life. Side Effects evokes cinematic imagery, sparked from dark urban and untamed rural counterpoints using talking drums, tone drums, varied effects, and computer programming. Musical textures are in continual flow, a sense of motor drive and movement creating a sensation akin to road hypnosis. Harnessing the talents of diverse musicians from distinct disciplines, Side Effects is the link between the ambient rhythm-scape of Last Light and the dynamic, unpredictable energy of Eardrum's live performances"

Artist: 310
Title: After All
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: BAY 019CD
"310's second full-length album for the Leaf Label distills a jumble sale of unlikely influences (hip hop, minimalist classicism, prog rock, collage esoterica, field recordings) and decants them into tracks that don't fit into a neat pigeonhole. On After All, 310 gradually build a restless, cinematic vision in erratic time signatures, where hazy memories of childhood fever-dreams and scratchy home reels fade in and out of focus... or are they just half-remembered images from a TV screen? The result on this, their fourth album is an emotionally fraught body of work that coaxes and wheedles a response from the listener, so unobtrusively, but effectively, that it leaves an eerily unsettled atmosphere behind."

Title: Downtown & Brooklyn Only
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: BAY 021CD
"Downtown & Brooklyn Only is a long overdue 'combination' reissue of the first two albums recorded by the NYC duo 310. Originally entitled SNORKELHoUSE (1998) and AUG 56 (1997) the tracks were released on their own tiny imprint and in very limited quantities. This CD marks their first full release. SNORKELHoUSE (1998), the album that got them noticed by The Leaf Label in the first place is filled with hypnotic loops and rhythms, fusing hip-hop sensibilities with shadowy found sounds and distant voices. AUG 56 (1997) is like finding yourself up to the chin in a puddle which you'd misjudged to be ankle-deep. Proceedings get progressively menacing from the outset, starting with the first yards of 'Global Illage', a shadow land somewhere between :zoviet*france: and DJ Spooky."

Artist: ASA-CHANG & JUNRAY
Title: Jun Ray Song Chang
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: BAY 022CD
2001 release. "A heady brew of Eastern percussion, babelogues of spoken word, horns, toys, flute, mandolin and an analogue synthesiser drum, which together resonates like a struck bell, oscillates wildly between breathtaking futurism and timeless spirituality, and bucks like a wild horse. Asa-Chang & Junray is about the friction between self-taught tabla-bongo guru Asa-Chang (who spends his professional life as a touring percussionist with multi-million-selling J-pop acts), and traditionally instructed tabla master U-Zhaan. Programmer Hidehiko Urayama never appears onstage, but his presence is felt through the sound system machine, Junreitronics. 'We respect the Indian tradition but wanted to offer something back, something different, something that even Indians couldn't do, Asa-Chang explains. 'That's how we developed the tabla-over-spoken-word style.' A method exemplified by the stunning 'Hana' (Japanese for 'flower') which has picked up an enviable cult following (including John Peel). A bolt from the blue of intense, hallucinogenic sounds, it's one of those tracks you hear once and will never forget."

Artist: YOKOTA, SUSUMU
Title: The Boy and the Tree
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: BAY 025CD
2002 release. "There is an island called Yakushima in the south of Japan, which is designated as a world heritage site. It rains a lot there and there are many trees that are two or three thousand years old. It is a very mysterious island. Also, there is an animation film called Mononokehime directed by Hayao Miyazki. The scenario, nature itself, is the living thing and this film has sharp animal sensibilities. These two things have effected this album very much. I also moved to the suburbs of Tokyo two years ago, and live in a place which is closer to the mountains and river. I go to the mountains a few times a week and this atmosphere is reflected in my music. The smell of grass and trees, the air in the woods makes my mind clear. And it gives good effect for making music. Walking among the big trees, I can hear my heartbeat and also the sound of the earth echo."

Artist: ELLIS, ROB
Title: Music For The Home Vol. 2
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: BAY 029CD
"Three years after the first volume of Music For The Home, Rob Ellis returns with a new, intensely personal solo album which opens a treasure chest of archive recordings from the last decade, documenting a turbulent period in his domestic life. Where volume one was created and edited almost entirely inside a computer, this album includes many piano pieces recorded live. A self-taught pianist, Ellis's idiosyncratic approach to composition has drawn comparisons to Messaien, Reich and Cage, among others. The album also utilizes domestic recordings and concrčte techniques, notably on 'Church Opposite,' which uses the sounds of church bells to

       startling effect."

Artist: COLLEEN
Title: Everyone Alive Wants Answers
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: BAY 031CD
2003 release, one of the highest regarded Leaf label releases. "Colleen's simple but effortlessly charming music is one of magical details -- naďve instrumentals filled with warmth, melody and soul, played on a broken music box, a glockenspiel or a guitar, phasing in and out, on the verge of collapse. Above all, this is wonderfully human... Everyone Alive Wants Answers is the haunting work of 26-year-old Parisienne Cecile Schott. Her debut album release."

Artist: WELLS, BILL
Title: Pick Up Sticks
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: BAY 034CD
"In the esteemed company of To Rococo Rot's Stefan Schneider, Robert Wyatt's sometime musical director Annie Whitehead, and Berlin singer/songwriter Barbara Morgenstern, Scotland's leading avant-garde outsider Bill Wells joins The Leaf Label for this remarkable collaboration. With Pick Up Sticks, Wells moves away from piano-based work toward a warm, largely improvised, electronic group sound, colored with the tonality of Whitehead's trombone. This is a recording unlike anything Wells has done before, combining adventurous electronic touches to classy jazz compositions."

Artist: A HAWK AND A HACKSAW
Title: A Hawk and a Hacksaw
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: BAY 035CD
"A Hawk And A Hacksaw was conceived and performed by genre-defying one-man orchestra Jeremy Barnes of Bablicon and Neutral Milk Hotel. The album features intricate piano-based compositions layered with accordion, percussion, horns, bells, a chicken, geese, gongs, cats, a duck, spoons, and pieces of tin. It was recorded over the course of 15 months in the Loire Valley (Saumur, France) with a variety of guest performers. Recalling Kurt Weill's orchestrations, Carl Stalling's visionary cartoon soundtracks and Tom Waits' more whimsical works, Barnes creates a playfully gothic atmosphere with his multi-layered, frantic compositions. Mixing field recordings with accordion, piano and bursts of drunken choruses, he generates a singular and unnerving orchestral whole. A song's direction can hinge on a dog's bark or a phone ringing, while cacophony and sweet, hymn-like harmonies cohabit in entertainingly unexpected passages. Influenced by everything from Eastern European folk music to Pierre Schaeffer to Spike Jones & His City Slickers, there's a healthy disregard for boundaries at play. A Hawk And A Hacksaw is a soundtrack for PT Barnum deceits and backwoods carnivals, top hats and curly moustaches, but maybe gone a little more screwy. What's more, everything is live-to-tape."

Title: I Tweet the Birdy Electric
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: BAY 036CD
"Cousins Sam Britton and Ollie Bown created Icarus in 1997 to represent a collision of ideas that were best expressed musically. I Tweet The Birdy Electric is an adventure in sonic construction and musical history, melding the base of electronic culture's past with new bricks of originality. Like their peers Autechre, Supersilent and Burnt Friedman, Icarus walk a tightrope between inherited musical tradition and experimentalism, using the former in service of the latter without compromising the power of either. The album twists its musical elements much in the way its title plays on Walt Whitman's famous poem pointing to a possible new direction for electronic music, recombining the past in new ways to render it completely innovative, while incorporating distinctly recognizable acoustic instruments to ground the compositions in an approximation of reality."

Title: Utopia
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: BAY 038CD
"Since the release of Martes, Murcof's debut album, Corona has progressed into film soundtracks, recently finishing work for the producers of one of the biggest Mexican films of all time, Amores Perros. He has been commissioned to remix both Kronos Quartet and Miles Davis; will continue to tour extensively in Europe, Japan and North America; and has been nominated for the prestigious Ars Electronica award."

Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: BAY 039CD
"Formed in 2001, Sydney, Australia's Triosk sets a new standard for improvisational musicians working with electronics. The band combines the sound and unity of purpose of the great jazz piano trios with new compositional forms and the textures and processes of minimalism and electronic music. The result is warm and feline and quietly innovative, a triumph of musical charisma over mere technique."

Title: Tripper
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: BAY 040CD
"Copenhagen's Efterklang reach far beyond the expectations of a debut with their ambitious first album for The Leaf Label. The ten-member group's music whispers like thunder, combining glacial strings, febrile electronic rhythms, hushed male-female vocals (reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine) and a Greenlandic choir -- all joining together to a transcendent whole. Tripper was a year in the making, and it captures the intricate majesty of the best film soundtracks and most evocative classical works. Efterklang means 'reverberation' (literally, 'after noise'), but is loosely translated as 'remembrance.' Both definitions capture the band's effect; a strong sense of yearning lies at the heart of their work, while ghosts of aggression linger menacingly along the edges. Tripper breathes with sensations and subtleties and emotional depth, bringing to mind the music of Rachel's, Mum or Mogwai."

Title: Tiger, My Friend
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: BAY 041CD
"Galia Durant and Carim Clasmann's debut album is stuffed full of memorable, friendly tunes that nod toward traditional songwriting without hiding the rough edges. Unashamed choruses proudly sit atop intricate, warm electronics, plucked violins, broken toy keyboards and microphones left in the rain. The oddest sounds and fragmented melodies jostle for space. But in heartbreakingly honest numbers like 'The Counter' the vulnerability of the music is truly exposed. Tiger, My Friendwears its heart on its sleeve and skips through rain-wet streets, and it does so rather infectiously. Beyond the noises, the squeaks and the downright excessiveness of it, there's more to this record than just tinkering and hysteria. Psapp's lovelorn tunes tell tales of everyday insecurities with a refreshing honesty. And these simple sentiments become more than the sum of their parts."

Title: Darkness At Noon
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: BAY 043CD
"In the past year, Jeremy Barnes has lived in England, Prague and New Mexico, gradually gathering the many instruments, musicians, and ethnographies that appear on the new album by A Hawk And A Hacksaw. Recorded in a British church and in an Albuquerque dance studio, Darkness At Noon breathes life from the cultures through which it travels. Barnes expands AHAAH with an orchestra of accordion, harp, oud, Turkish cumbus, and jaw harp. A reverential madman, he drops an impassioned bomb on traditional structures, mines through the wreckage and reassembles pieces with the attentive care given to holy relics. AHAAH doesn't break from musical history as much as sing its essential values in wholly new forms."

Title: Remembranza
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: BAY 047CD
"As Murcof, composer Fernando Corona creates some of today's most captivating music being made, in any genre. For several years he has combined musical styles in wholly new ways, adding emotional depth to robotic minimalism and under the name Terrestrefunk, brass to techno. His innovative approach reaches new heights with Remembranza, the second full Murcof album that creates a storied, layered framework within strict microboundaries. Born in Tijuana in 1970, Corona was primarily known as a member of Mexico's celebrated Nortec (Norteno-Techno) Collective before his first full-length, Martes, was released in 2002. His revolutionary Murcof work recontextualizes the work of his beloved European contemporary classical composers (including the likes of Arvo Pärt, Henryk Górecki and Giya Kancheli) within minimal electronic structures. It's a trick that others have tried to pull off, but none with Corona's lightness of touch, or widespread appeal. The pieces here incorporate traditional instrumentation recorded especially for the album (including strings, piano and harp), working in tandem with his passion for new and unexplored rhythms. A sublime album of texture and depth, Remembranza reaches the apex of Corona's explorations, and re-establishes him as an artist at the forefront of electronic music."

Title: The Headlight Serenade
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: BAY 049CD
"This apparently harmless phrase masking something altogether darker could also describe Australian trio Triosk's second full-length release The Headlight Serenade. The album's crystal clarity sounds like it's floating on air and yet there's a looming undertow that threatens to pull you under if you let it. This balance of light and dark is the key to The Headlight Serenade's heady attractions. The title was inspired by the transitory play of headlights as they pass across objects in the night, creating moments frozen in time. Each piece on the album also captures a glimpse of a particular moment, memory or feeling, be it a past-life romance or the sensation of lying in a boat, looking at the stars."

Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: 2CD
Price: $9.00
Catalog #: BAY 050CD
...Selections from the Leaf Label's First Ten Years. "Celebrating the anniversary of any record label can be strange, as the quality of releases is more a function of the bands the label chooses to work with. Still, ten years feels like a bit of a milestone. That's especially true for The Leaf Label, which was launched by ex-4AD press officer Tony Morley in 1995 with no explicit intent to even exist beyond the first 12"; moreover, Leaf's 100 releases have little in common besides a united focus of artistry and innovation, in and around the intersection of electronic, jazz, classical, rock, folk and pop music. Leaf has continually offered up some of the most interesting music from across the planet, always celebrating artistic individuality, and was recently honored by XLR8R as one of the 25 best independent labels in the world. A double CD retrospective compilation available at a special price, Check The Water is a celebration of The Leaf Label, featuring many of the musicians who have molded the label's sound. Sequenced broadly chronologically, the album includes a stack of unabashed classics from the recent catalogue, a taste of what's to come from the label's latest signings, and a few long-deleted gems from the vaults. Twenty-nine tracks in two and a half hours." Title: Les Ondes Silencieuses
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: BAY 057CD
"Cécile Schott returns with her third album as Colleen, the highly personal, distinctly adventurous and confident Les Ondes Silencieuses, which follows Colleen Et Les Boîtes Ŕ Musique from late 2006. This album signals a change of approach for Parisienne Schott. Gone are the samples and loops of old, as the emphasis moves to the natural tones produced by a range of unusual live instruments, largely unadorned. The seeds for this album were sown when the 15-year-old Schott happened upon the film Tous Les Matins Du Monde, based on the life of Marin Marais, the acclaimed 17th century viola da gamba (or viol) player and composer. The sound and mystery of the instrument set her off on an obsession which reached fruition in 2005 when she found a viola maker who custom-built one for her. More fascinating to play than she had ever imagined, it produced a sound so rich and naturally resonant that the loop-based works which had become a defining characteristic of Colleen's work could be laid to rest. A whole new approach to composing was needed, both in a more traditional and, paradoxically, a more improvised way. Chord changes, greater use of space and tempo variations were all now possible. The sounds created were key to the overall feel of the record."

Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: DOCK 046CD
"Copenhagen's Efterklang make a welcome return with a magical re-introduction to their sound -- the release of Under Giant Trees, a limited edition five-track mini-album in deluxe packaging. Recorded in the band's studio, Under Giant Trees evolved somewhat unconventionally. Returning to Copenhagen at the close of 2005, Efterklang's five core members set to work recording the foundations of these new songs, with a view to this stand-alone release. Extra vocals, brass and strings were added, with Edda and Hildur (from Icelandic quartet Amiina) recording further violin parts. Using musicians who had performed with the band on tour, the idea was to capture the songs as they had been played live, retaining the free spirit of their origin. These were uncharted waters for Efterklang, who usually create songs in the studio as they record. The results are mesmerizing -- at once vibrant, otherworldly, poignant and panoramic."

Title: A Hawk and a Hacksaw and The Hun Hangár Ensemble
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD/DVD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: DOCK 047CD
"A real treat for the burgeoning ranks of A Hawk And A Hacksaw fans, this strictly limited EP includes the first fruits of the duo's blossoming relationship with a group of extraordinarily talented Hungarian folk musicians, who have come together under the name The Hun Hangár Ensemble to tour Europe with A Hawk And A Hacksaw this summer. Consisting of eight newly-recorded songs, both original and traditional, the EP serves as an introduction for both the listener and the artists themselves as they get to know each other, providing a platform from which music and ideas can evolve. In addition to the CD, a 20-minute bonus DVD (An Introduction To A Hawk And A Hacksaw) documents the last two years of almost continuous touring by the original duo of Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost, with behind-the-scenes insight into their travels across Europe, as well as some great live footage captured in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Anyone not yet au fait with the group's blistering but delightfully intimate live performances would do well to sample some of the fun. There are only 4,000 individually numbered copies of this release available worldwide, in special gatefold card packaging." The DVD is NTSC format, region free.

Format: CD
Price: $7.00
Catalog #: DOCK 29CD
"This time last year, no one knew who the hell Dan Snaith was. But his debut album as Manitoba, Start Breaking My Heart, changed all that with a mother lode of critical bon mots and performances. Along with Susumu Yokota, Manitoba is the Leaf label's biggest success story. Having relocated from Toronto to London, it wouldn't be right unless Dan laid down the respect for the ol' sod. On the Give'r, he brings you the glorious 'Dundas, Ontario', a brand new Manitoba remix that kicks that folktronica tag into oblivion. Then there's two brand new tracks: 'Tits And Ass: The Great Canadian Weekend' -- a throbbing, clattering beast that falls away to unveil some of Dan's most beautiful keyboard melodies yet."
