Title: Lialeh
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: LITA 003CD
"Finally back in print and much more deluxe than the first go around back when we first started in late 2002! Light In The Attic proudly presents a new deluxe CD pressing to the Lialeh soundtrack, the first major black porn movie and the final word in soulful shagging music. Bryan Records released this Shaft-era classic in 1974, and since then it's been harder to find than a honky in Harlem. Legendary drummer Bernard 'Pretty' Purdie composed, produced and performed Lialeh's score, while between projects with Curtis Mayfield, Aretha, Gabor Szabo, The Last Poets, The Rolling Stones, James Brown... Music fans have long looked to Lialeh for seven original Purdie tracks, his first as writer/composer, untempered by the A&R's who guided his records for Flying Dutchman, Date, Prestige and Mega." Deluxe digipack CD with 16-page booklet.

Title: Kites Are Fun
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: LITA 004CD
"Fans of the Beach Boys, the 5th Dimension and other seminal pop artists have a gaping hole in their music collections if it doesn't contain Kites Are Fun, the 1967 soft-psych-pop masterpiece from the Free Design. Never heard of the band? You're not alone. Although now admired by audiophiles such as Beck, Stereolab and the Polyphonic Spree, the Free Design never achieved mainstream fame -- an injustice that still puzzles many critics. In 1966, the family act was filling New York City coffee houses with dreamy, deceptively complex harmonies when acclaimed producer Enoch Light signed the siblings -- Bruce, Chris, and Sandy Dedrick -- to his Project 3 label. One year later, the Free Design debuted with Kites Are Fun. Nine of the album's songs are originals, notably the title track, which became an instant soft-pop classic; well-chosen covers, including the Beatles' 'Michelle' and Simon & Garfunkels' 'The 59th Street Bridge Song,' complete the collection." Remastered, with liner notes by Cornelius & Michael White, plus 2 bonus tracks.

Title: Heaven/Earth
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: LITA 005CD
"The Free Design, those oft-overlooked legends of '60s soft pop, drew inspiration from such diverse musicians as Duke Ellington and the Mamas & The Papas. Today, with its sweet harmonies and even sweeter lyrics, the Free Design inspires such diverse musicians as Belle & Sebastian and Jurassic 5. Listen to the band's acclaimed third album, Heaven/Earth, to experience a sound that has awed the in-the-know for more than three decades. The New York-based family band -- siblings Bruce, Chris, Sandy and younger sister Ellen -- recorded Heaven/Earth in 1969 for acclaimed producer Enoch Light's Project 3 label. The album is quintessential Free Design with 'a sweet sound that caressed the aural taste buds and floated deliciously,' in the words of rock historian Kingsley Abbott, 'daring listeners to follow it.' Chris Dedrick's imaginative lyrics of both innocence and irony, and the band's tight vocals and dreamy enthusiasm, shine on '2002 -- A Hit Song,' 'Dorian Benediction,' and the album's other delights. As a special treat and for the first time on CD, fans will finally be able to enjoy eight ultra-rare bonus tracks from the Project 3 archives: Ellen Dedrick's 1969 solo 45, as well as six Tony Mottola cuts recorded in 1968 and featuring 'The Groovies' on background vocals (aka the Free Design)."

Title: You Could Be Born Again
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: LITA 006CD
"Light In The Attic presents the Free Design's brilliant 1968 sophomore album You Could Be Born Again. After hitting the charts with their 1967 debut Kites Are Fun, You Could be Born Again is the sound of a band discovering what they are capable of, amid the excitement of what is to come. Beautiful and elaborate originals intertwine with classic '60s pop hits, arranged in such a way that they could literally claim ownership. Duke Ellington's celestial 'I Like the Sunrise' takes on a life of its own, dazzling the listener and reminding one of Gil Evans, while original tunes such as 'I Found Love' unearth Chris Dedrick writing one of the great moments in pop, though history doesn't know it. The album's closing number entitled 'An Elegy' sees the Free Design at its starkest, musically and lyrically, in the group's entire career, serving as a powerful tribute to Dwight Dedrick, who died in Vietnam the same year of this release. In You Could Be Born Again, the Free Design master the ability to cover previous songs with an innovative and unsullied feel! A feat only do-able by the best of the best! Three decades later and the Dedricks influence still rings strong -- the Polyphonic Spree, Madlib, Belle & Sebastian. As an added bonus, the CD version features two Free Design Christmas classics, originally released in 1968." With a 16-page full-color booklet and new liner notes by Sean O'Hagan (High Llamas).

Title: Stars/Time/Bubbles/Love
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: LITA 007CD
"Originally released in 1970 on Enoch Light's Project 3 label, Stars/Time/Bubbles/Love served as the Free Design's turning point: mixing the group's timeless elements of soft-psych with a dose of funk! In the words of Free Design historian Robbie Baldock, 'Stars is where the Free Design gets funky!' With Stars/Time/Bubbles/Love the group's fourth album, chief Free Design songwriter Chris Dedrick continued to develop his experimental approach to composing, songwriting, and arranging, while beginning to introduce his love of jazz, gospel singing, and the Motown sound. Even the Jackson Pollack inspired-album art showcased a change of direction for the Dedricks, illustrating the group's contention that, with this album, they were pushing the Free Design sound out in completely new directions. As an added bonus, the CD version includes the previously unreleased track 'To A Black Boy', an undiscovered studio gem from circa 1970 and composed by Chris Dedrick. Plus, the 1970 single version of 'Butterflies Are Free.'"

Artist: MCGHIE & THE SOUNDS OF JOY, WAYNE
Title: Wayne McGhie & The Sounds of Joy
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: LITA 008CD
"The Holy Grail of Toronto Funk has arrived! Light In The Attic proudly presents the first true debut of Studio One veteran and Jackie Mittoo band mate, Wayne McGhie & The Sounds of Joy. Originally released in 1970 on the Birchmount label, this self-titled masterpiece is a wicked mix of reggae, funk, soul and wide open drum breaks. The best album you never got the chance to hear and cited by many as the first Canadian soul album. Twelve musicians are credited on the LP sleeve -- Studio One vets Alton Ellis, Ike Bennett, and Lloyd Delpratt; others, including Jackie Mittoo, are rumored to have sat in. Of the 10 songs, six were McGhie originals, and as the material moved from funk, to soul, to reggae/R&B crossover, it is Wayne's pure and soulful voice that sets the tone. Years later, McGhie would completely disappear from the music world, losing all touch with old friends and band mates. In the mid-'90s, The Sounds Of Joy returned, sparked by a renewed interest from talented hip-hop producers and forward-thinking collectors, like Q-Tip, Pete Rock, Buck 65, Mr. Supreme, and Public Enemy's Gary G-Wiz. These days, original LPs go for $600, even DATs for $100."

Title: Sing For Very Important People
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: LITA 013CD
"The Free Design make childhood a bit more psychedelic with this 1970's children's album, featuring many of the group's classic favorites, plus a number of new cuts." "Back in 1969, we were all big fans of PPM and when Mary Travers became a mother, they released the Peter, Paul and Mommy album. I think it was one of the seeds that resulted in the germination of the Free Design's Sings for Very Important People album. Other contributing factors included the fact that we were all parents by then and that several ('Bubbles', 'Kites', 'Daniel Dolphin') of our songs already on our other albums were ideal for a children's album. Our father, Art Dedrick, a prolific composer of concert band, jazz band and choral music had a song he had written years before called 'Little Cowboy' that was perfect for the album and Sandy's 'Love You' fit right in. Sesame Street the TV program was in full swing and that theme was one we had fun with in the studio. The album is full of lyrical references either to our childhood or that of our own children." --The Free Design's Bruce Dedrick (excerpt from CD liner notes). Remastered, with 2 "bonus tracks" (outtakes from a chapstick commercial?).

Title: The Now Sound Redesigned
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $8.50
Catalog #: LITA 016CD
Early 2006 release. "Three years in the making, the Free Design Redesigned series comes to its logical conclusion. Compiling both vinyl-only volumes of the critically-acclaimed series and including 3 exclusive bonus tracks onto one CD, Redesigned features a stellar selection of today's finest music makers. All have risen to the challenge of reworking classic tunes from '60s soft-pysch masters, The Free Design. Redesigned contains 19 radical reinterpretations for the club, home, or hi-fi. Highlights include Stones Throw's official beat conductor Madlib, who turns 'Where Do I Go' into an Afro-funk celebration. Belle & Sebastian's Chris Geddes envisions '2002 - A Hit Song' as a four-on-the-floor stomper and Grey Album mastermind Danger Mouse & Def Jux legend Murs make their debut collaboration with a wicked twist on the unreleased Free Design track 'To a Black Boy.' Caribou (formerly Manitoba) delivers an insane 8-minute free jazz psych opus while the Super Furry Animals and Stereolab & the High Llamas celebrate their love of the group with their trademark sound. Previously unreleased works include Styrofoam's (Morr Music) fresh take on 'I Found Love,' Koushik with Dudley Perkins (Stones Throw), and renowned turntablist Kid Koala & Dynomite D rework the darkest song in the Free Design's catalog, 'An Elegy.' Far from being another boring tribute piece, Redesigned's musical testimonials speak for themselves. Everyone involved has sought something deeper than your average remix; obvious testaments to the Free Design's unique brand of feel good pop-pysch."

Title: Jamaica to Toronto: Soul Funk & Reggae 1967-1974
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $13.50
Catalog #: LITA 019CD
"In 1963, the flight from Jamaica to Toronto was 8 hours. Today it's 3 1/2. Countless people have made the dwindling journey over the years, but in the sixties and seventies there was a new breed of traveler: the finest ska, rocksteady, and reggae recording artists the West Indies have ever produced. We're talking Studio One, Treasure Isle, Trojan, and WIRL veterans Jackie Mittoo, Johnnie Osbourne, Wayne McGhie, Lloyd Delpratt, The Mighty Pope, Noel Ellis, Jo-Jo Bennett, and many more. Arriving in their new Canadian home, these talented singers, songwriters, musicians, and performers simply did what came naturally to them. One by one, they hit the studio and captured some of the hardest tunes this side of Kingston. Jamaica to Toronto: Soul Funk & Reggae 1967-1974, details this crucial sonic migration and stands tall as the second helping of Light In The Attic's new Jamaica to Toronto series. The 16 songs on Jamaica to Toronto range from the in-demand Northern Soul attack of Eddie Spencer's 'If This Is Love (I'd Rather Be Lonely)' to Jo-Jo And The Fugitives' unknown break-beat monster, 'Chips-Chicken-Banana Split'. Taken from his 1971 album Wishbone, Mittoo's 'Grand Funk' sounds like a Jamaican Santana, while The Hitch-Hikers Featuring The Mighty Pope represent raw funk of the highest order on the righteous 'Mr. Fortune.' Reggae comes courtesy of dancehall don Johnnie Osbourne's 'African Wake' as well as the magical 'Memories' from Noel Ellis (whose Summer Records self-titled LP is the next release in Light In The Attic's ongoing Jamaica to Toronto series -- with over a half-dozen more titles and numerous 45s slatted for release). Jamaica to Toronto is only the beginning, so sit back and buckle your safety belt."

Artist: ELLIS, NOEL
Title: Noel Ellis
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LITA 020CD
"Noel is the son of legendary Studio One/Treasure Isle recording artist Alton Ellis, and this self-titled debut was recorded in Toronto in 1979 by studio wizard Jerry Brown for the pioneering Summer Records -- often cited as Canada's answer to Lee Perry's Black Ark Studios. This latest platter serves as the third release in the Jamaica to Toronto seven album series; following Wayne McGhie & The Sounds Of Joy (2005), and the recently released deluxe anthology Jamaica to Toronto: Soul Funk & Reggae 1967-74. Noel Ellis features six dub-loved, heavy yet ethereal tracks, with contributions from OG reggae maestros Jackie Mittoo, Willi Williams, and Johnny Osbourne. The eponymous classic lost full length includes the hugely influential version of 'Rocking Universally,' which was recorded by The Clash as 'Armagedion Time.' The poignantly autobiographical 'Memories' (about Noel's upbringing in Jamaica) is a highpoint as well. 'Stop Your Fighting' was a universal anti-materialism/war plea that we should still heed today, while 'Marcus Garvey' was delivered in Noel's playful style, despite a solemn rallying cry of 'Africa It Must Be Free.' Noel Ellis evoked a transcendent majesty, and the album's economical performances were a blessing compared to certain overproduced recordings of the era. Tasteful keys, varied percussion, essential echo, conquering dub changeovers, and Noel's impeccable mic control gave an otherworldly twist to Summer's remarkable drum and bass sound. It was an end-to-end burner for midnight tokers and cool rulers alike."

Artist: MITTOO, JACKIE
Title: Wishbone
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: LITA 021CD
"Black, bold and beautiful, the joyous reissuing of Jackie Mittoo's extra-rare Canadian debut Wishbone is the fourth and perhaps most anticipated release in Light In the Attic's ongoing Jamaica to Toronto series. Over the years many have paid tribute to the dynamic range and skills of the late, great Jackie Mittoo. From the emergence of ska right through to rocksteady and the boss sounds of reggae, he was front and center -- a pivotal figure and a sharp move-maker. Even after relocating to Canada, a land not necessarily known for its funk factor, this Studio One veteran worked tirelessly to share his gift and spread the music of Jamaica to a wider audience. Wishbone's 12 songs reach far beyond the island rhythms of reggae and into the realms of stone cold soul, funk, gospel and R & B -- an indication of the eclectic sounds that ruled the action-packed live music scene of Toronto in the day. Ranging from the entrancing Jamaica-meets-Santana vibe of 'Grand Funk' to the undeniable percussive bounce of 'Groovy Spirit,' while 'Soul Bird' sounds like an upbeat Jimmy Smith grinder, as the keyboard king takes us on an orchestral baroque/mod journey with the organ/harpsichord fuelled 'Steeple in the Snow.' Sweeping, ebullient Gospel-tinged reggae comes courtesy of the vocal-strings-and tings 'Love of Life,' and the cool rocksteady beat of the maestro's 'Mother Funk.' As one of the first Jamaican-Canadian albums to hit the '70s marketplace, Wishbone was a pioneering move from a recent immigrant. Criminally undocumented and kept a sweet soul secret by record collectors until now, this is a primetime slice of Mittoo magic, available to all."

Title: In My Own Time
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: LITA 022CD
2012 repress. "Remastered from the Original Master Tapes. Liner notes by Lenny Kaye (Nuggets, Patti Smith), Devendra Banhart, and Nick Cave. The late Karen Dalton has been the muse for countless folk rock geniuses, from Bob Dylan to Devendra Banhart, from Lucinda Williams to Joanna Newsom. Legendary singer Lacy J. Dalton actually adopted her hero's surname as her own when she started her career in country music. Karen Dalton had that affect on people -- her timeless, aching, blues-soaked, Native American spirit inspired both Dylan & The Band's 'Katie's Been Gone' (on The Basement Tapes) and Nick Cave's 'When I First Came To Town' (from Henry's Dream). Recorded over a six month period in 1970/71 at Bearsville, In My Own Time was Dalton's only fully planned and realized studio album. The material was carefully selected and crafted for her by producer/musician Harvey Brooks, the Renaissance man of rock-jazz who played bass on Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited and Miles' Bitches Brew. It features ten songs that reflected Dalton's incredible ability to break just about anybody's heart -- from her spectral evocation of Joe Tate's 'One Night of Love,' to the dark tragedy of the traditional 'Katie Cruel.' Known as a great interpreter of choice material, Dalton could master both country and soul genres with hauntingly pining covers of George Jones' 'Take Me' and Holland-Dozier Holland's 'How Sweet It Is'."

Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD EP
Price: $5.50
Catalog #: LITA 024CD
"The Saturday Knights are a culmination of three freaks, a jaw-jacking combination of performing personalities: Storyteller and entertainer Tilson, who can tickle any lady's funny bone; low-income yarn spinner and urban graffiti poet Barfly; and pumped up by the big beats and psychedelic turntable-art of DJ Suspence. Seattle's punk rock-power pop band with hip-hop songs' signed with Light In The Attic Records after a solid year of being wooed by labels like Downtown Records and Island/Def Jam. Their first gig was an improvisational smash success opening for a sold-out RJD2, and since then The Saturday Knights have performed with with Death Cab for Cutie, The Streets, The Go! Team, Blowfly, and Lady Sovereign. TSK circulated these four songs as a demo last year, and '45' became a taste-making hit."

Title: Betty Davis
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: LITA 026CD
"First official Betty Davis reissues. Mastered from the original tapes (First time since the '70s!). Previously unreleased bonus tracks. Betty recorded some of the finest punk-funk of all time, introduced Miles to Hendrix, and inspired generations. Each CD includes a deluxe 32-page booklet and elaborate digipak. New notes from Oliver Wang (O-Dub/Soul Sides), including Betty's second interview in over 25 years! For the first time, Betty's critically adored first two albums are being lovingly re-mastered from the original master tapes by Light In The Attic Records to sound as ferocious and revolutionary as they did when they first sprung on an unsuspecting world in the early '70s. In recent years, rappers from Ice Cube to Talib Kweli to Ludacris have rhymed over the intensely strong but sensual funk of Betty Davis. One can hardly imagine the genre-busting, culture-crossing musical magic of Outkast, Prince, Erykah Badu, Rick James, The Roots, or even the early Red Hot Chili Peppers without the influence of this R&B pioneer. Ms. Davis's unique story is unlike any other in popular music. Betty wrote the song 'Uptown' for the Chambers Brothers before marrying Miles Davis in the late '60s, influencing him with psychedelic rock, and introducing him to Jimi Hendrix -- personally inspiring the classic jazz-rock fusion album Bitches Brew." Title: Keep Reachin' Up
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: LITA 028CD
"A passionate but suave mod soul collaboration from the lovely and talented Nicole Willis and celebrated Finland funk collective, The Soul Investigators. In the cold far north dance underground, they have created a uniquely hot record of romantic grooves! The Brooklyn-born Willis has worked with both Curtis Mayfield and the Brand New Heavies and done crucial work for Mo' Wax, while the Finnish-bred Soul Investigators have crafted two previous full-lengths. Fans of Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings will find much to love on Keep Reachin' Up. Adored by the UK's Northern Soul DJs and fans, international momentum for the full-length has been primed by a BBC Top Ten Track of the Year list for 'If This Ain't Love' and world famous DJ Gilles Peterson making opening track 'Feeling Free' the 2006 Worldwide Winner Song of the Year. Mojo and Record Collector gave the Finnish edition four stars and Dusty Groove called it an 'instant classic.' It doesn't bother Willis if some people consider it retro, though. 'Certainly the music was a project of love but retro isn't a swear word so it could be considered that as well,' Willis says. 'However, I believe that we do a certain genre of music and that we are continuing in a tradition.' The Soul Investigators includes producer Jukka Sarapää on drums, Didier 'Baby Spector' Selin on tambourine, guitar & bass, Pete Toikkanen on guitar & bass, Antti Määtänen on organ & piano, and Sami Kantelinen on bass, among other musicians. The recording also includes contributions from renowned composer and Matador Records-alum Jimi Tenor (flute, tenor sax, horn & string arrangements), and string arrangements from Pekka Kuusisto. After playing with members of the Brand New Heavies and Curtis Mayfield, Willis moved back to the United States and worked with the band that would become Dee-Lite. Keep Reachin' Up has conquered Europe with its great tracks like 'Downtown' and 'Feeling Free,' and the album is an essential part of any collection of contemporary urban music."

Title: Summer Records Anthology 1974-1988
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: LITA 029CD
"First anthology of this legendary roots reggae label. Remastered from the original tapes. Limited edition digipack & deluxe booklet. Dual disc includes over twenty minute video documentary of late '70s unseen footage from Jackie Mittoo & Willi Williams in the studio to interviews with the musicians. For many locals and traveling Jamaican musicians, Jerry Brown's Malton, Ontario-based Summer Sounds Studios -- known as Canada's answer to Lee Perry's Black Ark -- was a creative haven that tapped deep into the depths of universal reggae consciousness. Located just outside of Toronto, the label fired their first shot in 1974 with Johnnie Osborne's 'Sun Rise' backed with the heavenly bounce of 'Love Makes the World Go Round' (co-produced by Brown's one-time collaborator and Half Moon Records founder, Oswald Creary). Throughout most of the '70s, Canadian-produced reggae music was a commercial non-entity, bar a thriving underground scene of ex-pats who simply did what came naturally to them in small studios and private dances. The records mostly sat unnoticed amidst the steady flow of JA product in the gaggle of independent record shops in Toronto that catered to the West Indian population. This sleeping giant will rest no more. Over the years, a veritable who's-who of reggae music legends passed through Brown's now-defunct basement studio, wired by none other than Prince (now King) Jammy: Jackie Mittoo, Willi Williams, Noel Ellis, Johnnie Osbourne, Stranger Cole, Leroy Sibbles, and Carl Dawkins to name a few. One by one they recorded the otherworldly tracks that form the cornerstone of Light In The Attic's Summer Records Anthology 1974-1988. Compiled and annotated by Jamaica-Toronto series producer, Sipreano (aka Kevin Howes) along with art direction by Vincent Cook (2 Step/Sandinista, Tokyo), this project is a testament to the dedication and persistence of Jerry Brown and his masterful sonic vision."

"Innocent Youths was the first long player released on Jerry Brown's Summer Records imprint, hitting the emerging Toronto reggae marketplace in 1977. In 2008, the original LP is virtually extinct, a highly coveted and extremely rare piece of Canadian reggae history (often described as the northern answer to Lee Perry's Black Ark). For the uninitiated, we are talking heavy bass, drums, reverb, echo, roots vocals, keys, guitar, percussion, and Brown's wild style touch behind the controls. By 1977, Earth, Roots & Water had developed into an engaging live entity as well, based around the talents of Adrian 'Homer' Miller (vocals), Anthony 'Base' Hibbert (bass), Colin 'Zuba' Suban (drums), Matt Shelley (guitar), and Tony 'KB' Moore (keyboards). Both a sonic and visual force, the charismatic youths soon found themselves performing in and around the Toronto area, opening up for The Police and The Stranglers while extending the UK-born punk/reggae love affair to North America. In 2008, Light In The Attic Records along with Jerry Brown and Jamaica-Toronto series producer Kevin Howes (aka Sipreano) have decided to share this vital bounty to reggae fans the world over. Innocent Youths contains the complete studio album lovingly remastered from the original Summer Records master tapes. Over 30 years ahead of its time, this maverick material showcases the breadth of Earth, Roots & Water. Dig in..."

Title: Songs For The New Industrial State
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $13.50
Catalog #: LITA 034CD
"'A stunning collection of new songs for and about the time we live in,' billed the text on the backside of composer Doug Randle's 1971 release, Songs For The New Industrial State. In 2009, the same holds true. Doug was, and still is, a writer, arranger, musician, and conductor with roots deep in the Canadian jazz scene of the 1950s. After a lengthy spell working in England during the first half of the 1960s, he returned to Toronto and took up an in-house position at the government-sanctioned Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), where in 1970 he recorded his very own 'What's Going On.' Commercially released by the short-lived Kanata Records label, Songs was an introspective look at ever-dominant corporations, the cutthroat advertising world, our consumer society, decaying environment, and his own personal condition. The results crossed the epic studio creations of David Axelrod's Capitol output (or Spanish folk-rock fuelled Pride LP) with Free Design vocal harmonies from notable vocalists Tommy Ambrose and Laurie Bower (Billy Van Singers, Mutual Understanding, Laurie Bower Singers). Randle himself describes his long-forgotten efforts as, 'my bitter and twisted Simon & Garfunkel songs,' and though the lyrical content is indeed weighty, Songs' backing tracks successfully merge swinging sunshine pop and atmospheric orchestrations with a groovy backbeat performed by the cream of Toronto's heralded studio scene (Moe Koffman, Peter Appleyard, Rob McConnell, and Guido Basso, to name a few). It's an album like you've never heard, and one under the radar of even the most dedicated crate-diggers. Songs For The New Industrial State's much-needed re-release was spearheaded by Canadian music historian and Jamaica-Toronto series producer Kevin Howes (aka Sipreano) and comes replete with OG liner notes from legendary jazz scribe, one-time Downbeat editor, singer, and songwriter Gene Lees, archival images courtesy of Randle, audio taken from the original CBC master tapes, complete lyrics, and stellar art direction courtesy of Vincent Cook (2Step Tokyo, Jamaica-Toronto) that remains faithful to the period issue. In spite of the reductive pop sensibilities and fashion-conscious trends that dominate our modern marketplace, we are ecstatic to reintroduce Songs' insubordinate cry to a global audience. Let's all ensure Randle's lost letter gets read nice and loud on this go-'round."

Title: Cold Fact
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: LITA 036CD
2012 represses released in association with the new Rodriguez documentary film: Searching for Sugar Man. "It's one of the lost classics of the '60s, a psychedelic masterpiece drenched in color and inspired by life, love, poverty, rebellion, and, of course, 'jumpers, coke, sweet mary jane.' The album is Cold Fact, and what's more intriguing is that its maker -- a shadowy figure known as Rodriguez -- was, for many years, lost too. A decade ago, he was rediscovered working on a Detroit building site, unaware that his defining album had become not only a cult classic, but for the people of South Africa, a beacon of revolution. Sixto Diaz Rodriguez was born in 1942 to Mexican immigrant parents in Detroit, Michigan. He recorded Cold Fact -- his debut album -- in 1969, and released it in March 1970. It's crushingly good stuff, filled with tales of bad drugs, lost love, and itchy-footed songs about life in late '60s inner-city America. 'Gun sales are soaring/Housewives find life boring/Divorce the only answer/Smoking causes cancer,' says the Dylan-esque 'Establishment Blues.' But the album sank without trace, thanks, in part, to some of Rodriguez's more idiosyncratic behavior, like performing at an industry showcase with his back to the audience throughout. As his music career became a memory, Rodriguez's legend was growing on the other side of the world. In South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, Cold Fact had become a major word of mouth success, particularly among young people in the South African armed forces, who identified with its counter-cultural bent. But Rodriguez was an enigma -- not even the label knew where to find him -- and his demise became the subject of debate and conjecture. Some rumors said he'd died of a heroin overdose or burned to death on stage. Others said he had gone mental. But the tide began to turn in 1996, when journalist Craig Bartholemew set out to get to the bottom of the mystery. After many dead ends, he found Rodriguez alive, well, free and perfectly sane in Detroit. Rodriguez himself had no idea about his fame in South Africa (the album had gone multi-platinum), and embarked on a triumphant South African tour, filling 5,000 capacity venues across the country. Rodriguez was still largely unknown in the northern hemisphere until 2002, when 'Sugar Man,' the album's extraterrestrially wonderful lead track, was picked up by David Holmes." This first official reissue has been gloriously remastered and includes a deluxe, 36-page book with new essays, interviews with Rodriguez, and full lyrics.

2012 repress. "Back in 1971, Coming From Reality was Rodriguez's last gasp, the follow-up to Cold Fact and the final album he was allowed to record for the Sussex label. Unearthed once again by Light In The Attic Records, it's another treat for fans new and old, designed -- at the time -- as Rodriguez's vision of a perfect pop album. Coming From Reality found Rodriguez decamping from Detroit to London's Lansdowne Studios, where the album was recorded with some of the UK's top talent including Chris Spedding (Sex Pistols, Dusty Springfield, Harry Nilsson) and producer Steve Rowland (The Pretty Things, PJ Proby, and the man who discovered The Cure), who recalls Coming From Reality as his favorite ever recording project. Highlights include the super poppy 'To Whom It May Concern,' the 'Rocky Raccoon'-inspired 'A Most Disgusting Song' and period piece 'Heikki's Suburbia Bus Tour.' The CD reissue also includes three previously unreleased bonus tracks recorded in Detroit in 1972 with Cold Fact collaborators Mike Theodore & Dennis Coffey, representing the last thing they ever did together." Title: A World Of Peace Must Come
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $13.50
Catalog #: LITA 039CD
"Stephen John Kalinich was born in Endicott, New York and grew up in Binghamton. In his early teens, he started writing poems and articles about world peace. He first came to California around 1964, fell in love with it, and promptly transferred from Harper College in upstate New York to UCLA. Kalinich found himself immersed in the vibrant anti-war culture of late '60s California, often writing songs and poems against the war. He found a musical partner and kindred spirit in Mark Lindsey Buckingham. They cut a demo for a track called 'Leaves of Grass,' inspired by the famous Walt Whitman poem 'Leaves of Grass,' and Kalinich started taking demos around. In the mid-'60s, it was either at Brother Records or while pumping gas that Kalinich first met The Beach Boys. He hit it off with Brian, Carl and Dennis right away. As the first artist signed to The Beach Boys' new label Brother Records, Carl Wilson produced a record for him. His first songs that saw release were 'Little Bird' and 'Be Still,' which he wrote with Dennis and were released on the Friends album. His relationship with Dennis would lead to a number of further collaborations and Kalinich/Dennis Wilson co-writes, including: 20/20 -- 'All I Want To Do,' Hawthorne, CA -- 'A Time To Live In Dreams,' Pacific Ocean Blue -- 'Rainbows,' and Bambu -- 'Love Remember Me.' A World Of Peace Must Come was recorded at Brian's house in Bel-Air in 1969. The tapes were promptly lost, not to be heard again until now. For the first time, this truly timeless snapshot of an era and an ethos will be available nationally, and we can only hope that his prophecy is fulfilled." Deluxe booklet featuring unseen photos, notes, and interviews; liner notes by Beach Boys archivist Alan Boyd and Bill Bentley; bonus track of original 1966 demo for Brother Records.

Title: Histoire De Melody Nelson
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: LITA 040CD
"Sex has always sold, but presented with a landmark musical backdrop, the combination is rare as finding the elusive 'G-Spot.' Quite often, attempts fall flaccid, missing the titillating mark by a mile. But French icon and national treasure Serge Gainsbourg is no stranger to sexual proclivities, and with his 1971 release Histoire De Melody Nelson he shared an erotic tale as seductive today as the day it was released. With help from actress, amour, and inspiration Jane Birkin, arranger/conductor and co-conspirator Jean-Claude Vannier (L'Enfant Assassins Des Mouches), not to mention a tight, hand-picked crew of top-shelf UK session musicians, Nelson is often cited as Gainsbourg's master work, an essential album for the discerning music lover. Light In The Attic's reissue of Histoire De Melody Nelson finally gives this still radical record the respect and attention to detail it so rightfully deserves. For the first time ever, this lavishly packaged and true-to-the-original artwork CD contains extensive English language liner notes and informative content explaining the times and tales behind the making of this passionate platter. Dispelling the countless myths, hearsay, and rumors surrounding Nelson, New York-based writer Andy Beta contributes a stylish essay for your edification while Finders Keepers' honcho and Twisted Nerve founder Andy Votel shares his deep knowledge of Gainsbourg and the Gallic and UK music scenes with great insight -- never before have these stories been told. The maestro himself even chimes in with a period Q&A interview from France's Rock N Folk Magazine, and printed lyrics (both with English translations). So as we said before, sex sells, and yes, we are buying. With Gainsbourg, Birkin, Vannier and company supplying the mood, it's our artistic pop-rock duty to explore Histoire De Melody Nelson with fresh ears, eyes, and hands. With its massive inspiration reaching out to the quintessential rap of De La Soul and The Beatnuts to like-minded and eclectic singer-songwriter Beck, Nelson continues to entrance. Light In The Attic looks forward to continuing to spread Gainsbourg's provocative message to thrill seekers the world over."

"Today, 'garage,' 'psych,' and 'punk' are three overused words to say the least. They're dropped from every direction to brand, market, and sell, but looking back to the mid-1960s, there was only one group of musical mavericks that clearly defined them. The Monks were five beat-playing American GIs stationed in Germany who, after their discharge, decided to stay and continue their musical mission. Meeting up with a team of local managers, they transformed themselves and their sound into a holy racket like the world had never known. This five-person order literally birthed the above genres through a fuzz-drenched evolution of sound, bursting with social commentary and future primitive rhythms. Krautrock? It started here. Do we hear non-believers? We are not making this up. If you aren't already converted, it won't take long. Light In The Attic is ecstatic to present the Monks recorded legacy in the lavish and lovingly researched: The Early Years 1964-1965. Numerous period photographs (many unseen) and an extensive two-part essay by Canadian music journalist Kevin Howes (Jamaica-Toronto series) accompany both releases and tell the Monks story like it has never been told. Bonus material dating back to the pre-Monks band, The 5 Torquays, is also included. Press play, drop the needle, zone in, and see for yourself. "Magic that could only have been seen on a small stage, in a packed theatre, in August of 2004. That was when Light In The Attic released a landmark compilation called Wheedle's Groove: Seattle's Finest In Funk & Soul 1965-75, and to celebrate brought together many of those original Seattle funk and soul artists for a one-night-only reunion concert, led by young blood music director and KEXP DJ Johnny Horn, and featuring Robbie Hill, Overton Berry, Patrinell Staten, Ron Buford, and KYAC's very own #1 boss-jock Robert Nesbitt. The following day, still on a high from the show, LITA, Horn, DJ Mr. Supreme, and lead-producer Dynomite D (Beastie Boys) birthed the idea of cutting a new album covers and originals - with some of these local music legends. So the choice was made to record all analog at the very studio where it all began -- Audio Recording -- with the man who not only fostered an original Northwest sound but engineered a handful of the original Wheedle's Groove tracks -- studio wiz Kearney Barton (The Sonics, The Wailers, Black On White Affair). And now, 5 years later, Light In The Attic is happy to put forth Wheedle's Groove -- Kearney Barton, an album of 9 new earth shaking, head nodding grooves, including Patrinell (Pastor Pat Wright) Staten and the Total Experience Gospel Choir's interpretation of Soundgarden's 'Jesus Christ Pose,' Overton Berry's keyboard led 'Humpty Dumpty' (originally recorded by Placebo/Marc Moulin), and the long overdue reunion of Ron Buford with Ural Thomas -- the talented pair behind the 1965 local smash 'Deep Soul.' Far from retro cash grab rehash, this is a serious funk throw down and original work of art, shaming musicians half their ages in the process. Super sonic Seattle funk and soul, it's time to let the world know the score!" Mini-gatefold sleeve.

Title: If I'm in Luck I Might Get Picked Up
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: 7"
Price: $6.00
Catalog #: LITA 045-020EP
"Celebrating Light in the Attic's 10 year anniversary in 2012, we are releasing a series of very special colored vinyl 7"s. The series features contemporary artists covering a track reissued by Light in the Attic on the A-side, plus the original version on the B-side. To launch the series, we asked Los Angeles-based scuzzy punks Zig Zags, whose debut 7" came out on Mexican Summer, to team up with legendary punk rock icon Iggy Pop (yes, THAT Iggy Pop!). With this, we give you Iggy Pop and Zig Zags' take on Betty Davis' 'If I'm in Luck I Might Get Picked Up' from her self-titled debut album (LITA 026). Digging deep into the grooves of the original, Zig Zags discovered a secret heavy Sabbath vibe lurking just below the funk surface. Mixing that with their usual sludge-punk leanings, the god-like Iggy Pop was brought in to sing. A natural choice." On green-colored vinyl.

"Charles Bradley - known as 'The Screaming Eagle of Soul', and for good reason - tackles 'I'll Slip Away' by one of Light in the Attic's big success stories, Rodriguez. Dating back three years before his defining Cold Fact album, 'I'll Slip Away' was the Sugarman's 1967 debut single for Impact Records. In Rodriguez's hands, it's shuffling, tropicalia-tinged folk. In Bradley's hands and backed by the inimitable Menahan Street Band, it's a vintage soul stomper." On orange vinyl.

"On this release, Screaming Trees man Mark Lanegan applies his tobacco-flavored tones to 'Same Old Man,' a traditional made famous by the haunting New York singer-songwriter Karen Dalton. What Dalton achieves with the traditional instruments of America (notably her celebrated banjo) in her 1971 arrangement, Lanegan re-imagines with strings, droning Indian tones, sitars and sub-continent-sized production." Title: It's So Hard To Tell Who's Going To Love You The Best
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: LP
Price: $19.00
Catalog #: LITA 045LP
"After re-releasing vaunted folk-singer Karen Dalton's sophomore LP In My Own Time in 2006, Light In The Attic Records are proud to announce a much needed official vinyl reissue of her 1969 Capitol debut. It's So Hard To Tell Who's Going To Love You The Best is a heart wrenching and bluesy introduction to the intoxicating world of Dalton and her deep well of musical secrets. It's So Hard To Tell... spans generations of classic American songwriting (Ledbelly, Jelly Roll Morton, and Tim Hardin) and with Dalton's unsurpassed interpretive depth and emotional range, it's no surprise that artists from Fred Neil to Nick Cave have sung Dalton's praises over the years. Even the likes of Bob Dylan have fallen under her spell, recalling the singer's illuminating presence on the New York music scene during the pair's formative Greenwich Village days: 'My favorite singer in the place was Karen Dalton. She had a voice like Billie Holiday's and played the guitar like Jimmy Reed.' But championing endorsements aside, all you have to do is drop the needle on the grooves to understand. World weary and filled with the blues, Dalton's tragic life story was a rocky road. While no longer with us in the physical, her growing musical presence is stronger than ever and worthy of re-examination by the converted and uninitiated alike. Selling poorly at the time of release, original vinyl copies of It's So Hard To Tell Who's Going To Love You The Best have all but vanished while bootleg internet rips take away all the soul. With period artwork, tip-on jacket, extensive liner notes, photos, and clear audio re-mastered from the original Capitol masters, this Light In The Attic reissue is set to become the definitive analogue version of Dalton's stunning debut. Dim the lights and turn that stereo up, Karen Dalton will turn your living room into private concert, an intimate performance you will never forget. 180 gram LP, gloriously re-mastered from the original tapes. Beautiful 'old school' tip-on jacket with original artwork plus rare photos and new liner notes by Brian Barr (Oxford American) interviewing key session players from the album including Harvey Brooks and Dan Hankin. Includes 18"x24" full-color poster." Also includes 56-page Light In The Attic Records zine.

Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: LITA 046CD
"Betty Davis was riding high in the '70s. A new record label, a series of high profile relationships, and intensely sexualized live performances made her a rising star. It seemed like everything was aligned to take the music world by storm. So Betty and band got back into the studio where she would act as writer, producer, and performer, creating what she thought would be her definitive release. What emerged was the unapologetically uncompromising, self-referential 1975 album Nasty Gal. Now -- thirty-five years later -- Light In The Attic Records is proud to announce the first official CD reissue of this final label-release by unparalleled funkstress Betty Davis. The re-release features new liner notes by John Bailon (writer of the Wax Poetics Betty Davis cover story in 2007), original album art, complete lyrics, beautiful digipak, 32-page full color booklet, rare photos, and interviews. Ahead of its time, Nasty Gal shows Betty digging deeper into her musical and cultural expression than ever before, and delivers from every angle. This is Hendrix and Sly Stone inspired funk-rock at its finest. From the title track's mutant groove and grunt to her onetime husband and jazz legend Miles Davis co-written ballad ('You and I'), this lady will tear your heart out! Betty's time is now."

Artist: DAVIS, BETTY
Title: Is It Love Or Desire
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: LITA 047CD
"Betty Davis was a musical maverick with vision. Image, substance, sex, and grit combined with a badass band that could deliver the funk bed backbone to the sultry music between the sheets. After cutting two notorious discs for the Just Sunshine label (Betty Davis and They Say I'm Different), and Nasty Gal for Island Records, Davis went to work on her most personal and expressive record yet. After capturing 10 hard-hitting tracks in 1976 at the remote Studio In The Country (Louisiana), a creative difference with her then label caused the platter to be unexpectedly shelved. Davis would cut one final album and soon retreat from the music business, completely disappearing from the public eye. Is It Love Or Desire is a little-known gem in the Davis catalogue. Mastered from the original tapes, and untouched for over 30 years, this release features detailed liner notes by Oliver Wang (Soul Sides, Betty Davis and They Say I'm Different reissue contributor), the originally intended artwork housed in a lavishly packaged digipak, with a 32-page full color booklet featuring the original artwork, new notes, rare photos, archival material, and recent interviews with Davis and her skin-tight band Funk House. Never bootlegged, never released, never heard until now, the secret story of this lost album will finally enter the history books and cement this bold soul sister's contributions to music and popular culture. It's time to get down. Long live Betty Davis!"

Artist: BIRKIN & SERGE GAINSBOURG, JANE
Title: Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg (Je T'Aime... Moi Non Plus)
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LITA 048CD
"Without a doubt, Serge Gainsbourg is agent provocateur and Gallic soul brother #1. His sensual work is championed by all in the know and still resonates quite frankly in these sexually exaggerated times. Building on the North American re-introduction to the maestro's work with 1971's masterpiece concept album Histoire de Melody Nelson, Light In The Attic Records is thrilled to announce their follow-up Gainsbourg reissue, 1969's Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg (often referred to as Je T'Aime... Moi Non Plus). Recorded as a series of duets and solo performances with lover, actress, and model Birkin, the pair's chemistry-enhanced collaboration was thrust upon the record buying public to much shock and horror, but indeed found global success. The disc quickly shot its cigarette brandishing author and fresh-faced vocalist into the international spotlight; and although lead-off single 'Je T'aime' and its seductive purrs reached top slot in the UK charts, none other than the Pope branded the tune offensive and blasphemous. Ever the conversationalist, Gainsbourg wittly replied, 'we couldn't have gotten a better PR man!' Indeed Serge, indeed. Adding the period bonus track 'Chanson de Slogan,' (1969, arranged by Gainsbourg conspirator Jean-Claude Vannier, of 'L'Enfant Assassin des Mouches notoriety) the 11-song Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg is finally seeing the light of day on CD for the first time in North America. The release is replete with a 32-page full color booklet, original art, English/French lyrics, audio re-mastering by Dave Cooley (the genius engineer behind LITA's reissue of Histoire de Melody Nelson), and extensive liner notes, featuring an exclusive interview with the lovely and graceful Birkin who helps to provide new insight on this landmark album."

Artist: BOND, LOU
Title: Lou Bond
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: LITA 049CD
"Despite working for some of the biggest names in the music business, Lou Bond is still regarded as an outcast. Early '60s material on landmark label Chess stayed on the shelves. Even 1974's self-titled Lou Bond -- released on the groovy yet little-known Stax imprint We Produce -- was left to languish in cutout bins and vinyl graveyards across the US. Why did this soulful black hippie, troubadour, acoustic guitar slung over his lanky frame, keep on trucking, rocking and rolling after so many professional disappointments? Lou Bond is the street poetry of Sixto Rodriguez and Isaac Hayes' Hot Buttered Soul rolled into one. All you need to do is listen to his 10-minute plus 'To The Establishment' to understand. With its hypnotic strings, rock-steady backbeat, and 'tell it to the people' lyrics, you may find insight into the world in which we live. It seems that, thirty-six years after its conception, not much has changed in our socio-political climate. But brothers and sisters, we are ready to make change happen and Lou's debut album is the ideal soundtrack for both living and loving! Without overstatement, Lou Bond is simply a lost masterpiece that, due to music business bullshit, never had its proper chance to shine. Until now! It not only combines a heavy-duty slice of Memphis orchestral soul with a deep dose of '60s protest folk a la Dylan and Richie Havens, but transports the listener via Lou's unique, tender, and impassioned vocal delivery. Light In The Attic Records is proud to announce the first CD release and vinyl reissue for the album which not only features the aforementioned underground classic 'To The Establishment,' widely sampled on platinum hits by such artists as Outkast and Prodigy (Mobb Deep), but never-before-heard bonus material that provides a greater understanding of the mysterious artist himself. Acclaimed Memphis writer Andria Lisle (MOJO) presents a comprehensive and engaging set of liner notes featuring Bond's first interview in decades and a breadth of interviews from key Stax alumni which gets right to the heart of the artist's bittersweet backdrop. This deluxe release includes a beautifully crafted digipak, original art, 32-page full color booklet, full lyrics, unseen photos, and audio re-mastered from the original tapes."

Artist: KRISTOFFERSON, KRIS
Title: Please Don't Tell Me How The Story Ends
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: LITA 050CD
Subtitled: The Publishing Demos 1968-72. "After 7 years in the ever-changing, ever-challenging music business and with 49 titles under their belt -- ranging from French provocateur #1 Serge Gainsbourg to Detroit psych soul master Sixto Rodriguez -- how does Light In The Attic celebrate its 50th release? By bringing you their pinnacle album to date. Over 5 years in the making, and with the attention to detail and elaborate packaging the label is known for, LITA 050 is none other than the never-before-released 1968-1972 demos of Texas-born Renaissance man and maverick songwriting pioneer, Kris Kristofferson. With the outlaw Highwayman's full blessing, Light In The Attic is proud and honored to present Kristofferson's honest and upfront formative takes on the tunes that would eventually become part of the great American songbook. Since penning these numbers (many of which were written during the mid-to-late 60s while working as a janitor for Columbia Records in Nashville), over 500 artists including patron saint Johnny Cash, one-time lover Janis Joplin, and co-actor Bob Dylan (to name but three), have covered Kristofferson's material. While we shouldn't forget his vast commercial accomplishments as an award-winning recording artist and actor in more than 70 films (working under master directors like Martin Scorsese and Sam Peckinpah), it's these soul-stirring demos that laid the groundwork for his rough and tumble creative journey. Please Don't Tell Me How The Story Ends: The Publishing Demos 1968-72 features comprehensive liner notes by Michael Simmons (MOJO, LA Weekly), including interviews with Kristofferson, the musicians, and other related-folks from these landmark sessions. Plus, dig into a handful of testimonials from friends Dennis Hopper and Merle Haggard. With full lyrics housed in a massive 60-page full color booklet featuring unseen photos and archival material, plus a gloriously mastered audio soundtrack, you'd best crack open a bottle of your favorite trouble, sit back, and listen closely as Kristofferson relates his humanist vision in that down-home style -- it's full-blown poetry for the people."

Artist: SZABO, GABOR
Title: Jazz Raga
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $8.50
Catalog #: LITA 053CD
"The world famous Impulse jazz catalogue is so cavernous you truly need a music-minded flashlight to uncover its deepest and darkest secrets. Thankfully Light In The Attic has recently acquired such luminescent technology and the first discovery is Hungarian guitarist Gabor Szabo's 1967 Indo-fusion landmark, Jazz Raga. Combining Szabo's distinctive 6-string touch and open-minded ideas, it brings together jazz, pop-rock, and his native European influence, along with hypnotic sitar, stoned bass vibrations, occasional psychedelic vocals, and the laidback, yet totally in the pocket, Latin/R&B infused backbeat of #1 session drummer, Bernard Purdie (Lialeh OST, LITA 003). Szabo and his Jazz Raga have not only provided the soundtrack to many low light seductions, exotica dinner parties, and super swinging scenes, but formative influence on no less than Beck's monumental Odelay album (1996) and Santana's classic 'Black Magic Woman' (1970). Images of Szabo, hunched over his guitar in trance, fingers weaving a magical spell over the fret board, are iconic in the world of jazz. Light In The Attic is honored to spread the musical maverick's message, presenting Jazz Raga's CD debut. The audio has been lovingly re-mastered from the original tapes, and only enhances jazz pioneer Rudy Van Gelder's original pristine recording. Liner notes come courtesy of Ugly Things' Doug Sheppard and also include a vintage 1967 DownBeat interview with Szabo himself. While the guitarist is no longer with us (Szabo passed away in 1982 from liver and kidney disease while visiting his homeland), his original, inventive, and mysterious sound will never die. Whether it's 'Walking On Nails'' soft psych bliss or a sprightly cover of The Rolling Stones' 'Paint It Black', put Jazz Raga on your stereo and let it transport you to a place you've never been (a 'Search For Nirvana' if you will)... But please be warned, you'll want to return time and time again."

Artist: SULLIVAN, JIM
Title: U.F.O.
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: LITA 054CD
"In March 1975, Jim Sullivan mysteriously disappeared outside Santa Rosa, New Mexico. His VW bug was found abandoned, his motel room untouched. Some think he got lost in the desert. Some think he fell foul of a local family with alleged mafia ties. Some think he was abducted by aliens. By coincidence -- or perhaps not -- Jim's 1969 debut album was titled U.F.O., released on the one-off private press label Monnie. The album featured Phil Spector's legendary sessioneers, The Wrecking Crew. That's Don Randi, Earl Palmer and Jimmy Bond you can hear, the latter also acting as producer and arranger. A seventh son of a seventh son, Jim Sullivan was a West Coast should-have-been, an Irish-American former high school quarterback whose gift for storytelling earned him cult status in the Malibu bar where he performed nightly. Sullivan was always on the edge of fame; hanging out with movie stars like Harry Dean Stanton, performing on the Jose Feliciano show, even stealing a cameo in the ultimate hippie movie, Easy Rider. U.F.O. was a different beast to the one-man-and-his-guitar stuff Jim had been doing on stage; instead, it was a fully realised album of scope and imagination, a folk-rock record with its head in the stratosphere. Sullivan's voice is deep and expressive like Fred Neil with a weathered and worldly Americana sound like Joe South, pop songs that aren't happy -- but filled with despair. The album is punctuated with a string section (that recalls David Axelrod), other times a Wurlitzer piano provides the driving groove (as if Memphis great Jim Dickinson was running the show). U.F.O. is a slice of American pop music filtered from the murky depths of Los Angeles, by way of the deep south. 48-page CD booklet with unseen photos, lyrics, and archival newspaper articles."

Artist: BIRKIN, JANE
Title: Di Doo Dah
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: LITA 055CD
"Di Doo Dah is the first true solo album from British-born actress, model, singer, mother, and French national treasure, Jane Birkin. Emerging as a creative and beatific force in London's swinging '60s, she met Parisian provocateur Serge Gainsbourg in 1968 on the film set of Slogan and birthed one of the most fantastic creative collaborations the world has ever known. After the 1969 duet album Je T'Aime...Moi Non Plus (LITA 048) and the landmark L'Histoire De Melody Nelson (LITA 040) Jane was ready for her own namesake debut. Di Doo Dah sees Birkin, Gainsbourg, and co-conspirator Jean-Claude Vannier (L'Enfant Assassin Des Mouches) meld Jane's fragile vocals with jazz, rock, and lush orchestral textures: a perfect album for living and loving. Light In The Attic's definitive version of Di Doo Dah is available for the first time in North America on CD (featuring two bonus tracks), with original artwork, unseen photographs, and extensive liner notes by renowned music journalist Andy Beta (Spin, The FADER). With full cooperation and insight from Birkin herself -- not to mention French lyrics and English translations -- this reissue truly allows listeners to delve into the album's witty and frank world of sex, sin, voyeurism, motorcycles, Brighton, and banana boats. So what exactly does Di Doo Dah mean? 'Nothing at all!' replied Birkin in a BBC interview from 1973. But this album is far from a throwaway, showing a maturity and musical understanding from all parties involved. By the early '70s, this lady was already a mother and very much aware of traditional gender roles as well as the sexual revolution -- clearly able to plumb the necessary emotional depths required to translate Serge's madcap lyrics and songs. It is true that in Birkin, Serge had finally found his match and most transcendent muse. And although the couple eventually went their separate ways, they left us all whistling much more than 'Zipp-a-Dee-Doo-Dah' in the process."

Sanctified grooves, breaks, beats, and spiritual praise, delivered with a righteous and infectious chorus. Once again, we at Light In The Attic are proud to make the best reissue possible: Beautifully re-mastered CD (w/ well-dressed digipak design), original art, stunning archival photographs, and extensive liner notes from Chicago writer Peter Margasak (Chicago Reader). Artist: BERRY, OVERTON
Title: T.O.B.E./At Seattle's Doubletree Inn
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: 2LP
Price: $24.00
Catalog #: LITA 058LP
"Have you ever heard of Tukwila? Well, it's safe to say that if Light In The Attic wasn't located in Seattle, Washington, we mightn't have either. Just a short drive from the Emerald City it was once home to the now infamous Doubletree Inn. Despite its non-central location, the Doubletree was once the Pacific Northwest hotspot with line-ups around the block. The reason? The Overton Berry Trio, who ably filled the lounge with sounds of jazz, soul, and pop over clanking drinks and decadent dinners. While local music lovers, dedicated crate-diggers, and diehard funk heads will have heard of the classy pianist (often compared to his better-known peer, Ramsey Lewis), it's finally time to let the world in on our little secret. At the dawn of the 1970s, Berry and company recorded 2 long player albums: The Overton Berry Trio At Seattle's Doubletree Inn (1970) and T.O.B.E. (1972). Both take the listener to a time long forgotten, a place where music engaged, invited dialogue, and struck chords deep in one's soul. In celebration of this still relevant sonic legacy, Light In The Attic Records will re-release the original Doubletree Inn and T.O.B.E. (The Overton Berry Ensemble) albums in a lovingly packaged double vinyl-only reissue. Prominently featured on Light In The Attic's Wheedle's Groove release, their transcendental interpretation of The Beatles' 'Hey Jude' (from The Overton Berry Trio At Seattle's Doubletree Inn) is notorious amongst forward thinking DJ's and record collectors the world-over. The T.O.B.E. album (especially the break-beat heavy 'Jesus Christ Superstar') has also piqued the radar of many a tastemaker and original copies are virtually extinct and prohibitively priced when available in record dealer's crates or offered for sale on the web. Now with lovingly remastered audio, extensive liner notes, and unpublished photos, this double LP set gives you both of the aforementioned rarities and the best of Overton Berry - that is, if you haven't had the good fortune of seeing the man play live. Still performing his trademark blend of standards, thoughtful interpretations, and original compositions weekly in-and-around Seattle, if you find yourself music hungry in the Pacific Northwest, you just might have a chance. Berry is still doing his thing with the utmost respect and dedication to his craft." Housed in a deluxe gatefold sleeve; includes download card for three unreleased tracks.

Catalog #: LITA 059CD
"East Coast rockers from Queens, New York, the Vagrants are as OG as they come. Admired from across the Forest Hills High School cafeteria by future members of the Ramones, they ripped across the city and state with ecstatic abandon and an explosive stage show. They pissed off Bill Graham on a mini West Coast tour and were told they'd never play there again. Full of damage and pure dynamics, the Vagrants provided the blueprint for early punk. They invented their own timeless interpretations of soul and contemporary rock smashes including their infectious take on 'Respect,' eventually immortalized on the original Nuggets compilation in 1972. Shit, they may even be responsible for helping to push a young Hammond B3 rocking Billy Joel (then in the Hassles) into the big league. Not to mention a little Mafioso mayhem thrown in for good measure (steal, beg or borrow the album to read an extensive set of deep liner notes from Ugly Things' Mike Stax on the subject). But forget the tales of these real rock Rumble Fish, it's the music that tells the story. 12 tracks of groovy garage, propulsive psych, and primitive proto-punk, Light In The Attic score another coup with I Can't Make A Friend 1965-1968."

Artist: CHAPMAN, MICHAEL
Title: Fully Qualified Survivor
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: LITA 060CD
"Although not as well known as his peers (Roy Harper, John Marytn, and Bert Jansch), the name Michael Chapman is an important one in the linage of English folk rock guitarists and singer/songwriters of the late 60's/early '70s. For those unfamiliar with Chapman's work, Roy Harper might be his closest musical cousin (and both artists were signed to EMI's seminal stoner record label Harvest -- also home to Kevin Ayers and Syd Barrett). Like other Harvest artists, Chapman's music contains a slightly drugged out feel, sublime guitar playing and intense lyrics. Chapman recorded 4 albums for Harvest between 1968 and 1972, of which 1970's Fully Qualified Survivor is hands down considered the classic amongst the whole highly coveted bunch. What makes Fully Qualified Survivor such a special album (besides being a vehicle for a young Mick Ronson's mind-blowing guitar heroics) are the layers of beautiful acoustic guitars, deranged vocals, floating conga drums, and the cello of one Paul Buckmaster -- the same man who provided the intense strings on Elton John's dark masterpiece 'Mad Man Across The Water.' Fully Qualified Survivor is very much an 'album' more than a collection of songs as they seem to link together seamlessly, and in 2011 it's hard to find words to do them justice... File this record between Roy Harper's Flat Baroque and Berserk, John Martyn's Inside Out, and Bert Jansch's Jack Orion and you'll be fine. The perfect album for a blissful day and a joint." Includes a 28-page booklet of historic photos and liner notes, plus a new interview with Michael Chapman.

Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: LP
Price: $19.00
Catalog #: LITA 061LP
"Tracing the lineage and citing the fore-bearers of the New Weird America, one can't help but mention the music of bizarre folk singer/guitarist/artist Michael Hurley. If you haven't been following his career since the 1970s (when he was collaborating with the likes of the Holy Modal Rounders and Jesse Colin Young) then you probably discovered him in the past couple of years via Devendra Banhart's & Andy Cabic's label Gnomonsong, who have released Hurley's recent recordings. Hurley's debut album, First Songs, was recorded for Folkways Records in 1965 on the same reel-to-reel machine that taped Lead Belly's Last Sessions. He was discovered by blues and jazz historian Frederick Ramsey III, and subsequently championed by boyhood friend Jesse Colin Young, who released Hurley's next two albums on The Youngbloods' Warner Brother's imprint, Raccoon. How's that for cred? In the 1970s, Hurley made three albums for Rounder Records; Have Moicy!, Robert Christgau of The Village Voice called 'The greatest folk album of the rock era.'" First ever reissue on vinyl; re-mastered; 180 gram LP housed in Stoughton tip-on old school type jacket including faithfully reproduced original artwork by Michael Hurley.

Title: Our Lives Are Shaped By What We Love: Motown's Mowest Story
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: LITA 064CD
"You know the old saying, 'Go west, young man?' Well, it's far from cliche. Over the years, some have hit the road in search of Hollywood's glitz and glamour, others, simply for warmer climes, but in the early 1970s, Detroit-native and Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. brought his musical family to the left coast, one piece at a time. He began by launching the Mowest subsidiary in 1971, a new L.A.-based label dedicated to coastal grooves and an eye towards the top of the charts. In 2011, Light In The Attic Records is completely honored to present the first ever compilation of this now legendary label: Our Lives Are Shaped By What We Love: Motown's Mowest Story (1971-1973), an adult portion of sweet soul, heavyweight funk, and even a dose of potent West Coast hippy rock. Forty years later, it's time for the rest of the world to rediscover what a treasure trove of soulful sounds Mowest left behind. Our Lives Are Shaped By What We Love is a lovingly prepared 16-track CD with epic re-mastering from the original master tapes by engineer Dave Cooley (Blue Note, Warp, Stones Throw, Now Again), extensive liner notes from project curator Kevin 'Sipreano' Howes (Jamaica-Toronto series, Doug Randle, Rodriguez, Monks), and Strath Shepard's (Pacific Standard) impeccable graphic design. This is a slice of Motown like you've never heard or seen before, so let's head to the beach, set up shop, and max out to the rhythm. Looking at the Pacific, it appears that Mowest's surf is just about to break." Artists; Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, Odyssey, The Sisters Love, G.C. Subtitled: The Psychedelic Rock Sound Of South Korea's Shin Joong Hyun 1958-74. "Shin Joong Hyun's tale is personal, spiritual, and deep, not only reflecting the full spectrum of human emotions, but one that produced reverberating echoes of sound, some beautiful and life-giving, others restless and ungovernable. For the first time outside of Korea, Shin's music will be readily available to music lovers the world over. Light In The Attic are thrilled to release Beautiful Rivers And Mountains: The Psychedelic Rock Sound Of South Korea's Shin Joong Hyun 1958-1974, a career spanning CD compilation of the diminutive guitarist, songwriter, producer, arranger, and talent developer. Inspired by jazz, soul, and traditional Korean music, Shin started his career in the mid-1950s, performing for US troops stationed locally after the Korean War armistice of 1953. While his English language skills were limited, the young player had no trouble communicating through his trusty electric guitar, but Shin was no mere 6-string slinger for hire, he was able to communicate something far beyond your average professional musician. Production work and extensive songwriting followed, not to mention a steady stream of electrifying performances. Gaining momentum by the moment, Shin developed popular success across South Korea molding proteges like singing duo the Pearl Sisters and folk-psych songbird Kim Jung Mi into top pop stars. From there it was hit after hit. The late 1960s rock explosion and an influx of imported music from The Beatles, Jimmy Smith, and The Jefferson Airplane all informed and inspired Mr. Shin to elevate his own craft. Even experimental trips via a crew of local hippies also took the music man to new heights despite Korean law forbidding such rebellion. Drug use was illegal and punishable as a serious offence. Park Chung-hee, then President of South Korea began to closely monitor Shin's 'subversive' activities. After refusing to write a song in praise of the political leader, the musician was labeled unpatriotic and his career was instantly snuffed-out through a series of surveillance, torture, and institutional confinement. While this was not the end of Shin's musical story, for an all-too-brief moment in Korean cultural history, Shin Joong Hyun and his talented accomplices laid down a trove of recordings that have slowly reverberated far from their native land. Beautiful Rivers And Mountains: The Psychedelic Rock Sound Of South Korea's Shin Joong Hyun 1958-1974 features Korean/English lyric translations, unseen pictures, beautiful graphic design, and extensive liner notes with Shin Joong Hyun."

Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD

Catalog #: LITA 067CD
"In the vast netherworld of soul there are countless characters that reside on the fringe, their significant contributions to American music history long forgotten. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, tenor saxophone player and bandleader Charles 'Packy' Axton is yet another of the uncelebrated, despite a deep pedigree and funky catalogue of notable grooves. Part of the mighty Stax family through birth-Packy's mother Estelle Axton and uncle Jim Stewart founded the southern R&B dynasty in the early 1960's-Packy picked up the sax at a young age, and after linking with future Booker T. & the M.G.'s Steve Cropper and Donald 'Duck' Dunn, formed the The Mar-Keys. Almost reaching the top of the R&B and pop charts in 1961 with the classic 'Last Night,' friction caused by Packy's party going ways caused a split. It wasn't until 1965 that the wild child had another national instrumental hit on his hands, 'Hole In The Wall' by the Packers, chronicled by Light In The Attic Records in the first ever compilation of Axton's work: Late Late Party 1965-67. Despite the loving support of his musically minded mother, Packy was ostracized from Stax proper through a rift with Stewart because of his casual approach and oft-eccentric ways. Packy preferred hanging out and playing music with local black musicians, something that in the racially tense south, was viewed negatively by some. Still, throughout the mid-1960's, Packy recorded a series of hard, short, and down home R&B stompers at Royal and Ardent Recording studios by heavyweight producer John Fry (Big Star, Ry Cooder), accompanied by legendary Stax and Hi Records dynamos Steve Cropper, Booker T., & Teenie Hodges (Al Green, Ann Peebles, Syl Johnson). Late Late Party 1965-67 takes 17 of these powerful instrumental and vocal tracks for your listening pleasure. Supplemented by Memphis-writer Andria Lisle's extensive liner notes, unpublished photos, and the attention to detail Light In The Attic is known for."

"Here's how it went down: Jim Ford, a musically minded country boy from rural Kentucky heads to the Golden State with dreams of making it. Making the scene in Los Angeles, he befriends and writes songs for such artists as Bobby Womack ('Harry Hippie'), Aretha Franklin, P.J. Proby, the Tempations, and even appears on Sly & the Family Stone's There's a Riot Goin' On. He eventually hooks up with the legendary session players Dr. John, Jim Keltner (John Lennon), and James Burton (Elvis Presley) and books into the equally legnedary Wally Haider Recording Studios to cut an album of blue-eyed country-funk and soul. Released in 1969 on the minor label Sundown Records, Harlan County simply fell through the cracks between monster selling titles by the Beatles, Led Zepplin, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. 'Jimmy Ford is the baddest white man on the planet,' said Sly Stone of Harlan County's main man, and listening to the album today who's to argue? Needless to say, Light In The Attic Records are honored to re-release these ten emotive country-soul songs with Ford's original cover artwork, beautifully re-mastered audio, extensive liner notes by Kurt Wolff (The Rough Guide to Country Music), and rare photos, all presented with an adult portion of love. Fans of Charlie Rich, Tony Joe White, Lee Hazlewood, and Bobby Charles, please take note."

"Tragic Songs of Life was originally released by Capitol Records in 1956, the Louvin Brothers' first long-player with the label. Over 12 succinct Ken Nelson produced tracks, Ira and Charlie--backed by an economic supporting cast--sang tales that, according to reissue liner notes writer Jessica Hundley, 'reflected the torment, tragedy, and terror of the human condition.' Presented with original artwork, contemporary essay, rare period photos, and beautifully re-mastered audio from the original master tapes, Tragic Songs of Life is perfect for late night introspection and intimate moments, but please listen with a friend, you may need someone to hold onto. Despite the upbeat delivery of songs like 'Katie Dear,' there is something sinister lurking in the grooves." Deluxe 180gm LP housed in old school tip-on gatefold jacket. "Bolstered by one of the most celebrated and startlingly unique record covers ever, 1959's Satan Is Real delves into a strange netherworld of country that no longer exists. Touching on the Louvin's fire and brimstone southern Baptist upbringing, the title track's spoken recitation proclaims the existence of the devil himself. Featuring the iconic 'There's A Higher Power' and 'The Christian Life' (covered by The Byrds on Sweetheart Of The Rodeo), Satan Is Real is thought by many to be the pinnacle of the Louvin Brothers' recording career. It's certainly an album you'll never forget, finally presented once again on vinyl with the respect it deserves: original packaging, new liner notes, period photos, and immaculate audio re-master from the original tapes." "Long before heavy metal put Lucifer in the charts, a country duo from Alabama were telling listeners: Satan Is Real. The Louvin Brothers, aka brothers Ira Loudermilk (1924-1965) and Charlie Loudermilk (1927-2011), were that duo, strumming their guitars and singing country ditties about God and damnation. Long beloved of later musicians such as Gram Parsons, The Byrds, Wilco, they became the most lauded harmony team in country, influencing The Everly Brothers who, arguably, begat The Beatles. Now, Light In The Attic Records give The Louvin Brothers's back catalogue the long-deserved archive treatment, with a double CD compilation of their essential mid-'50s to early-'60s works. On the first disc is the original Satan Is Real album, their Southern Gothic masterpiece from 1959. Inspiring generations with some of the finest harmonies ever recorded, this Louvin Brothers classic is an angelic combination of high lonesome country and dark southern gospel. Meticulously re-mastered from the original tapes with a 40-page booklet and new notes, it includes a free download card for an exclusive Audio Commentary interview with the late Charlie Louvin, recorded in Nashville in June 2010. On the second disc, Handpicked Songs 1955-62, stars of country, rock, folk and more pay homage to the Louvin Brothers by handpicking a track each for this brilliant compilation of archive Louvin Brothers recordings. Each track is performed by the Louvin Brothers. The full list of handpickers includes Mark Lanegan, Graham Nash, Beck, Emmylou Harris, Will Oldham, Lucinda Williams, Jim James, Kris Kristofferson, Devendra Banhart, Chris Hillman, Zooey Deschanel, The Black Angels, Dolly Parton and M. Ward. Here's what some of this esteemed group have to say about the singing Brothers."

"On the heels of 2011s superb reissue by Light In The Attic of Michael Chapman's 1970 classic album Fully Qualified Survivor (LITA 060CD/LP) comes his 1969 debut Rainmaker (originally released on the seminal Harvest label). Like the FQS album, Rainmaker is a psychedelic-guitar-folk delight. The album kicks off with one of Chapman's best known songs 'It Didn't Work Out' -- which features a stellar cast of legendary English musicians of the era; Guitarist 'Clem' Clempson was in the prog-band Bakerloo (soon after playing with Chapman he'd join jazz-rockers Colosseum and then Humble Pie) Drummer Aynsley Dunbar (his resume includes John Mayall, Eric Burdon, David Bowie, Frank Zappa and Lou Reed), bassist Alex Dmochowski (long time Dunbar comrade) were both in Dunbar's Retaliation. Organ player Norman Haines was in Locomotive (another obscure, but legendary progressive English band of the day)." Includes 6 bonus tracks, plus a 28-page booklet with liner notes by Byron Coley.

Subtitled: Complete Stax & Volt Singles & Rarities 1964-65. "First ever anthology of Southern soul legend Wendy Rene including eleven singles, nine rarities and two unreleased songs. Born Mary Frierson in Memphis, Tennessee, home of Stax Records, Wendy Rene was christened by Otis Redding on signing to Stax as a teenager in 1963. Back then, she and brother Johnny Frierson, both singers at the Church of God in Christ, were determined to make it in music. Forming singing quartet The Drapels with two friends, they took the bus to 926 E. McLemore Avenue, auditioned for Stax co-founder Jim Stewart, and won a deal on the spot. 'As soon as we finished with the Drapels' songs and [the rest of the band] were going to the bus stop, I showed Mr. Stewart my songs,' recalls Rene. The result? Stewart found two acts in one, and Mary had two contracts with Stax. Though her career was brief, Wendy Rene left behind a thrilling catalogue of classic soul. Here, Light In The Attic gives it the archive treatment it richly deserves. Listen, delve and enjoy. Glorious mono sound restored and remastered from the original tapes."

Title: Listen, Whitey! The Sounds of Black Power 1967-1974
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: LITA 081CD
"Over a five year period in Oakland, CA -- archivist Pat Thomas befriended key leaders of the seminal Black Power Movement, dug through Huey Newton's archives at Stanford University, spent countless hours and thousands of dollars on eBay, and talked to rank and file Black Panther Party members, uncovering dozens of obscure albums, singles, and stray tapes. Along the way, he began to piece together a time period (1967-1974) when revolutionaries were seen as pop culture icons: Bobby Seale, Eldridge Cleaver, Angela Davis, Stokely Carmichael -- and musicians were seen as revolutionaries; Gil Scott-Heron, The Last Poets, Bob Dylan, John Lennon and others. As a result, Thomas wrote a 70,000-word hardcover book entitled Listen, Whitey! The Sounds of Black Power -- to be published by Fantagraphics in early 2012 -- which also includes some 200 full color images of obscure recordings that encompass rock, soul, jazz, comedy, poetry, and even religious sermons blended with Black Nationalism. Light In The Attic Records presents the companion 'soundtrack' to the book. For the time first ever, Black and White artists share space on a definitive anthology of the Black Power era. Listen, Whitey! is cross-cultural overview that sees Bob Dylan's out of print 1971 single 'George Jackson' reissued for the first time along with several selections from Motown's long forgotten 'Black Forum' label -- Motown's early '70s Black Power militant imprint that has never been documented until now with provocative recordings from SNCC spokesman Stokely Carmichael, outspoken African-American poet Amiri Baraka, and Black Panther Party singer/songwriter Elaine Brown." Title: Dreamin' Wild
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: LITA 082CD
"Pacific Northwest isolation mixed with wide-eyed ambition, a strong sense of family and the gift of music proved to be quite the combination for teenage brothers Donnie and Joe Emerson. Originally released in 1979, Dreamin' Wild is the sonic vision of the talented Emerson boys, recorded in a family built home studio in rural Washington State. Situated in the unlikely blink-and-you-missed-it town of Fruitland and far removed from the late 1970s punk movement and the larger disco boom, Donnie and Joe tilled their own musical soil, channeling bedroom pop jams, raw funk, and yacht rock. Spurred on their high school's music program, Donnie and Joe received a further push from their lifelong farmer father, who drew up a contract stating that he'd support his sons lofty ambitions with their very own recording studio as long as they focused on original material, sage advice for a man with zero experience in the music business. After taking out a second mortgage to help cover costs, Don Sr. also built his children a 300-capacity concert hall (dubbed Camp Jammin') replete with ticket booth, stage, and fully functioning snack bar. The only problem was that the projected audience never quite materialized, despite a prime time TV profile entitled "The Rock And Roll Farmers" from nearby Spokane, Washington. Even the Emerson brother's school pals were nonplussed at their privately pressed long player; hand distributed to local music stores, but not as far as Seattle, five hours away from their rural home. Somewhat rejected by the muted response, but never surrendering, both Donnie and Joe continued down a musical path and are still active as performers today. This rare slice of bedroom-funk gets the usual Light In The Attic treatment with newly remastered audio, detailed liner notes, and expanded original album art with loads of photos from the Emerson's collection."

Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: LITA 083CD
"What in the hell is country funk you ask? The answer is a complicated one, in part due to the fact that Country Funk is an inherently defiant genre, escaping all efforts at easy categorization. The style encompasses the elation of gospel with the sexual thrust of the blues, country hoedown harmony with inner city grit. It is alternately playful and melancholic, slow jammin', and booty shakin'. It is both studio slick and barroom raw. And while these all may seem unlikely combinations at first glance, upon close listen, it all makes sweet sense. Light In The Attic presents Country Funk 1969-1975, a melting pot concoction of the music of Dale Hawkins, John Randolph Marr, Cherokee, Johnny Adams, Mac Davis, Bob Darin, Jim Ford, Gray Fox, Link Wray, Bobby Charles, Tony Joe White, Dennis The Fox, Larry Jon Wilson, Bobbie Gentry, Gritz, and Johnny Jenkins. Featuring extensive liner notes by Jessica Hundley (MOJO, The New York Times, Vogue), original album/label artwork, and new illustrations by Jess Rotter (JessRotter.com, Rotter & Friends), this down home package is not only a treat for the ears, but a feast for the eyes. Think of this as a fantasyland where the Josie-era Meters back young Elvis singing Kris Kristofferson-penned slices of rustic American life and you'll begin to understand the country funk vibe. It's from the swamp to the city and all points in between."

Title: The LHI Years: Singles, Nudes, & Backsides (1968-71)
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: LITA 084CD
"With his handlebar moustache and booming baritone, Lee Hazlewood was one of the defining stars of the late '60s. Though he's perhaps best known for his work with Nancy Sinatra (including writing mega-hit 'These Boots Are Made For Walking'), Hazlewood did stunning work away from that particular glamour queen and found latter day champions in Beck, Sonic Youth, and Jarvis Cocker. Now, for Record Store Day 2012, we are kicking off our excavation of the Lee Hazlewood archives with this anthology, Singles, Nudes & Backsides, collecting the best of Lee's solo songs and duets from his LHI (Lee Hazlewood Industries) imprint. As a true legend of the great American songbook and a rebellious pioneer who left behind a lengthy trail of echo laden pop masterpieces, Lee's influence continues to reverberate today. Between 1968-71, Hazlewood not only released his finest solo work, but produced numerous artists on LHI. From acid-folk and country-rock to pop-psych and soul, LHI issued dozens of long forgotten 45s and LPs. This series will include material from LHI (re-mastered for the first time from the original analog tapes), along with Lee's output for other labels, rarities, unreleased gems, and the films of Torbjörn Axelman. See the sleeve: surrounded by nude girls, each wearing a fake moustache, Hazlewood wears a suit, ever-so-slightly awkwardly playing the role of the '60s playboy. Just like the picture, the songs present a man conflicted; he's the tender-hearted romantic, the broken-hearted loser and the rugged cowboy, all in one. It's there in the western swing of 'Califia (Stone Rider)', the loneliness of 'The Bed' and the bleak beauty of 'If It's Monday Morning.' Hazlewood's tremulous voice was made for duets (indeed, he wrote 'Some Velvet Morning', one of the greatest of all time); here, Suzi Jane Hokom, Ann-Margret and Nina Lizell play counterpart to his manly tones. In the wonderful liner notes, written by British journalist Wyndham Wallace, the writer describes his friend Hazlewood as 'a curmudgeonly, unpredictable sort at the best of times, as impatient with his own talent as he is with other people.' The Hazlewood Wallace knew was puzzled by the growing interest in him in the last two decades of his life, which was ended by cancer at age 78." Includes a 40-page full-color booklet with extensive liner notes and photos.

Artist: THIN LIZZY
Title: Thin Lizzy
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: LP
Price: $24.00
Catalog #: LITA 086LP
"When scrolling down a list of debut LPs by rock's heaviest hitters, Thin Lizzy is as unheralded as they come. Long before the group's trademark 'twin-guitar' sound was born and anthems like 'The Boys Are Back In Town' became instant hall-of-fame material, the street tough Irish group was a dynamic power trio consisting of guitarist Eric Bell, singing bass player Philip Lynott, and sticksman Brian Downey. Forming only a year before their monumental signing to world-famous Decca Records, Thin Lizzy fused folk, hard rock, lyrical poetry, and a dose of Celtic lore in a heady brew that despite its potency, sold poorly at the time of release. Often ignored apart from hardcore Lizzy devotees around the globe, Light In The Attic is incredibly proud to produce a much-needed vinyl-only re-release of Thin Lizzy." On 180 gram vinyl, housed in a gatefold tip-on sleeve; includes 18"x24" poster.

Title: A House Safe for Tigers
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: LITA 087CD
"A House Safe For Tigers is the soundtrack to one of the seven TV movies Lee Hazlewood made with the director Torbjörn Axelman during his period living in Sweden in the early 1970s. Hazlewood had moved there to lay low and to help his son avoid the draft, but wound up finding happiness and creative freedom. Many of the albums recorded in Sweden made their way no further than Scandinavia, but of them all, A House Safe For Tigers is the holy grail for collectors, often changing hands for hundreds of dollars. Originally only available in Sweden, this marks the first time Tigers has been reissued and available the world over. The movie was a 'semi-documentary' featuring Hazlewood and his friend Axelman, looking back to childhood and contemplating the meaning of life. In it, Hazlewood runs a marathon, tells anecdotes about a bum who cured his stutter and convinces a group of Swedish children to take sides against Richard Nixon. 'It's strange, very strange,' Hazlewood said, 'But we meant it to be strange. It's not necessary to see A House Safe For Tigers to enjoy the soundtrack, of course. Despite the fact that it was never released outside of Sweden, the music's hallowed reputation -- cultivated in the intervening decades by the privileged few who were able to hear it -- is testament to the strength of its material. First ever reissue. Re-mastered from original master tapes. Includes new liner notes by Wyndham Wallace, interviewing director Torbjörn Axelman."

Artist: STINNETT, RAY
Title: A Fire Somewhere
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: LITA 088CD
"A hippie-fied, soul-rock, folk-rock, psych-rock gem lost in the vaults for four decades, A Fire Somewhere by Ray Stinnett (best known as a member of '60s outfit Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs) sounds as fresh as the day it was cut, and comes with extensive liner-notes detailing the fascinating life of a little-documented '60s rock voyager. By 1967, the summer of love, Ray left for Haight Ashbury in San Francisco with his wife and young son, taking up residence at the legendary Morning Star Ranch, where Ray focused on finding his true voice. Returning to Memphis a year later, Ray formed a working friendship with Booker T Jones, who produced Ray's unreleased Sun Tree at Pepper West album. Eventually, when Jones moved to Malibu and took a contract with A&M, he lined up a deal for his old friend. Still working in Memphis with (old) friends Jerry Paterson and Mike Plunk on bass, along with Booker T. and co-mixer/engineer Richard Rosebrough (Chris Bell, Big Star), Ray channeled his experiences in the pop machine, at Morningstar and beyond into the songs that would become A Fire Somewhere. It funnelled the vast experiences of this pop star, cosmic traveler and grounded, loving father. The songs contained the fried country twang and boogie-woogie grooves of his hometown and of his youth, but were also threaded through with the new psychedelia - shreds of distorted guitar, looping experimental jams and acoustic renditions. 'Art is a reflection of life,' says Ray of the making of A Fire Somewhere, 'and my life was full of reflection at this time.' And it's perhaps exactly that fact which kept this incredible record unreleased for all these years. By summer, the album was ready for release. By winter, it remained on the shelf. A&M reassured Ray that they were going to make him a superstar. Ray had already done that; he just wanted the songs released. Soon, they hit an impasse. Ray took his tapes and songs and went on with his life. In the end, A&M's loss is our gain. Listen, and enjoy, this message from another time, and from an old head on young shoulders. 'It's a torch that's been carried forty years through the desert, waiting for this moment to arrive,' says Ray." Includes a 40-page booklet; remastered.

Title: Searching for Sugar Man: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: 2LP
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: LITA 089LP
2013 repress on 180 gram black vinyl; deluxe "tip-on" gatefold jacket with two double-sided inserts. "The story remains one of the music world's most unusual tales of the 1970s: an obscure debut LP by a Detroit singer-songwriter becomes a source of hope and inspiration to the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. Now, the story of Rodriguez and his cult album Cold Fact is the basis for Searching for Sugar Man, a riveting new documentary by filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul. Light in the Attic Records in partnership with Sony Legacy are honored to announce the release of the original motion picture soundtrack, comprising tracks from Cold Fact and its 1971 follow-up Coming from Reality - both reissued in 2008 and 2009 by Light in the Attic. The soundtrack begins with the otherworldly 'Sugar Man' and acts as a primer to this long-overlooked musician's fusion of gritty funk, political poetry and blissful psych-folk. Searching for Sugar Man, a Red Box Films & Passion Pictures Production in association with Canfield Pictures & The Documentary Company, distributed by Sony Pictures Classics in the U.S., was a big hit at this year's Sundance Film Festival where it won the world documentary audience award and a special jury award."

Price: $15.00
Catalog #: LITA 091CD
"Garra was originally released in 1971 and brought us the rare groove classic 'Wanda Vidal,' heralded by UK, European, and Japanese music fans years after the disc's initial release. Amidst an intoxicating mix of instruments, vocals, and orchestration, it's a deep cut on an event deeper document. Any way you spin it, we at Light in the Attic are extremely proud to present Garra as part of our four-album Marcos Valle reissue campaign. Consisting of an ambitious string of early 1970s landmark studio sessions (sympathetic in spirit with Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye's game changing work from the same era), Garra features extensive liner notes by San Francisco-based writer Allen Thayer (Wax Poetics) with exclusive interview content and song-by-song breakdown from Marcos himself. Fans new and old will finally have easy breezy access to these once hard-to-find Brazilian classics. Tackling topics like Presidential corruption, rampant consumerism, and the black power movement, Garra is a welcome addition to any South American friendly record collection and sits proudly with the best of Brazil. Catalog #: LITA 093CD
"Previsão Do Tempo was originally released in 1973 and quickly became a favorite of Valle disciples. Still committed to political/cultural criticism through his music, Marcos was reaching a plateau in terms of sound and vision (Previsão Do Tempo sports an arresting sleeve shot of Marcos underwater and also features contributions from Waltel Branco and O Terco). Any way you spin it, Light in the Attic is proud to present Previsão Do Tempo as part of our four-album Marcos Valle reissue campaign. Title: You Turned My Head Around: Lee Hazlewood Industries 1967-1970
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: 11x7" BOX
Price: $68.00
Catalog #: LITA 094BOX
RSD Black Friday 2012 release. "Part of the sheer joy of Light in the Attic's excavation of Lee Hazlewood's back catalogue has been exploring the output of his own, late '60s label, Lee Hazlewood Industries, which issued dozens of long forgotten 45s and LPs. Whether acid-folk, country-rock, pop-psych or soul, LHI artists were united by the patronage of the underdog hero of 1960s music, the mustachioed maverick Lee Hazlewood. The best of these have been now collected in You Turned My Head Around, a lavishly packaged, 3000-edition box set of eleven 45s, featuring such LHI favorites as Suzi Jane Hokom, Honey Ltd., Kitchen Cinq, Ann-Margret, and of course the undeniable Mr Lee. Though Lee Hazelwood neither sings nor appears on many of these tracks, You Turned My Head Around still tells the listener much about the cult singer-songwriter, producer, film star, and latter-day cowboy. Like Hazlewood's own output, these are pop songs colored by sadness, pain, and wisdom. Hazlewood's character is there in every long, spiral groove thanks to his stunning production."

Title: Trouble Is A Lonesome Town
Label: LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: LITA 096CD
"Light In The Attic's Lee Hazlewood Archive Series continues with an expanded reissue of Lee Hazlewood's debut album. Re-mastered from the original tapes, this is the first time Trouble Is a Lonesome Town has been available in its original mono mix since the 1960s. This is an essential purchase for Hazlewood fans or anyone curious about the man before the mustache. Originally released in 1963, Trouble... finds the bohemian cowboy sketching out a vivid picture of a backwater place named Trouble, where trouble with a small 't' is never far away. 'Trouble is little and it's lonesome,' he says, on the title track, 'you won't find it on any map, but you can take three steps in any direction and you're there.' Lee says plenty on the album. The first voice you hear is Hazlewood's spoken-word narration. It's a format the singer-songwriter would revisit frequently, introducing his stirring songs with a touch fireside storytelling in the rich, Texan drawl he'd tried hard to lose during years he was struggling to make it as an aspiring radio DJ. Each mini, pre-song poem seems to impart unexpected wisdom. Indeed, if the record sounds remarkably wise and mature for a debut album, Hazlewood was, of course, no spring chicken on making this debut. 34 years old at the time of the album's release, he was already a seasoned producer, writer and publisher with dozens of hits under his belt and a few singles under his own name and more under the pseudonym 'Mark Robinson' -- all of which are included here in this reissue."
