Lightning Bolt
Label:
LOAD RECORDS
Format:
CD
Price:
$13.00
Catalog #:
LOAD 026CD
"Originally issued in the Spring of 1998 by Load Records as an LP-only release in an run of 750 copies, this is now available again! The response to their second full length,
Ride the Skies
has been incredible. This record is a raw slice of Lightning Bolt welding drone and trance-like bass-and-drum lock with some of the of the jet blast riffs they have mastered. As a bonus, this records also contains the cassette companion piece (Load Records 26.1) that was previously only available from the band by writing away. The bonus track features three bass and drums songs combined with ambient and found sounds for a mix pushing the sonic boundaries."

"The future of music has arrived! With just drums and bass, trainspotters will name check outfits like Ruins and Godhead Silo. Prepare yourself for much more? Lightning Bolt, from Providence, RI, has been in existence since 1994 and has done four U.S tours and a Japanese tour. They've toured and played shows with Sonic Youth, Melt Banana, Ruins, Black Dice, Deopdead and Orchid. These shows struck unprepared audiences like a swinging sock full of pennies."

Price:

Catalog #:
LOAD 040DVD
"Strap yourself to a 3800 watt two-piece freight train as it steams its way across America. Follow the band Lightning Bolt as they drop jaws in locales from ultra-boho Williamsburg, NY to sweaty Lubbock, Texas. It's a wild ride that has some swank bug-eye filmmaking from Peter Glantz and Nick Noe capturing 19 shows. This shit is wall-to-wall, Rhode Island to Texas to California. Talk to 'em as they crowd into a van two deep. This is no Guns N' Roses style party rock, this is planet-flattening sound waves that will make your croutons nuclear. Professionally edited, 83-min. digitally shot video of 19 dates of a cross-country tour of Lightning Bolt. Also includes bonuses such as 2 (two!) brain-melting animations, a poster gallery, chapters, and lots of other bonus footage."

Price:
$13.00
Catalog #:
LOAD 041CD
"The much anticipated follow-up to 2001's album
Ride the Skies
,
Wonderful Rainbow
pulls out all the stops. Recorded loud and proud over a year, this record grabs your throat with eight songs of bass so nasty, it seers human flesh on contact and drums so mighty they liquefy brain cells on impact. Yes, reference two-piece/crazy/heavy rock bands like Ruins, Slayer and Boredoms, but you'll come up a few cents short on every pound of this two-tan heifer. Lightning Bolt is a two-piece that boasts a 3800-watt bass amp competing for volume with hammer-of-the-gods drum strikes."

Format:

Price:

Catalog #:
LOAD 043CD
"At long last, a fitting plot has been laid out for Pink and Brown for their diaper-soiling antics in the field of two-man screech. Yes, a plot for this defunct band. Although gone, their dead body dances like that dead guy in
Weekend At Bernies III
. Pink and Brown continue the tradition of masked two-piece units and add some anthems to slovenly undress and general turpitude. Pink and Brown have toured with Lightning Bolt and are stalwarts of the San Francisco scene that has birthed such stars as the Numbers and Erase Errata. This release is nothing like either of those two however; it is scuzzed out love songs to parking meters and naked hot tub parties."

Catalog #:
LOAD 044CD
"Hailing from Norway, Noxagt have come to burn your dirty soul. Three piece in the bass, viola, and drums format. This record is heavier than all the weight Richard Simmons lost before becoming the annoying skinny man he is. Produced by Billy Andersson (Sleep, High On Fire, Neurosis), this record is a pummeling masterpiece. Songs that breathe through their mouth very loudly. Noxagt is at the forefront of the Nor-Wave movement that takes cues from the American wrecking units like Lightning Bolt and Pink and Brown and adds a distinctly Norwegian heavy slant. Liner Notes by Stefan Jaworzyn."

Catalog #:
LOAD 046CD
"Friends Forever is a Denver, Colorado band that cannot be contained on a stage and will play synthmo-drum/bass/whatever whammy thwack attack from within their van outside your precious club. The band is touring non-stop. Friends Forever's
Killball
details an ultra-violent future where games are played to the death.
Killball
is similar to American football circa 1920-2016, except the players wear no pads and are given PCP to ensure a grizzly game. Each player is equipped with a switchblade and a machete. To be tackled is to be destroyed. Tonight you have been chosen to play
Killball
. Can you win? Ha, ha, ha. Reference sound generators like Devo & party-friendly anthem rock with a healthy helping of appliance clatter. The record is dedicated to the Denver Broncos, if only they could understand."

Price:

Catalog #:
LOAD 047CD
"Number Three in the Load Split Series. A standoff match up between Dearborn, Michigan's pride Viki and Lexington, Kentucky's offspring, Hair Police. Viki brings a free range roving donkey ride with squeaky beats, microphones up mouths and zooming crunch. Prepare to be astounded with sounds that make the goose loose. Viki's dates with Adult., are proof that she brings the cars with boom. Think Viki in the same fresh breath as lo-fi speaker technicians like Suicide and Wolf Eyes' minimal electronic splurt. For those not afraid to get their sneakers dirty. Hair Police are another side of this silver coin that channel classic crunch climbers like Throbbing Gristle. Hair Police have been known to expend thousands of calories during their live sets, amounts not seen since Black Flag's heydey."

"Eight songs that take apart rock music atom by atom so that you are left with a skeleton of sound. Sightings still use the tools of the trade -- guitar, bass and drums -- to take both rock and roll out of rock n' roll. Reference weirdo deconstructo outfits like Einsturzende Neubauten, (mid-period) Black Dice, and Mainliner. This is the sound between the guitar strings, inside the bass amp, and within a drum stick. Yes, the truth. If punk rock used to mean fucking shit up and doing it your own way, this record erects a mile high middle finger facing the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."

Label:
LOAD RECORDS
Format:
12"
Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
LOAD 049EP
"It's been said about Khanate before that 'slow is the new loud.' This being true, Khanate's sound is a deafening roar. Take the brutal, slow dynamics of Eyehategod or Earth and add a slow menace and then you have a good start on where this record will leave you. Members in the band are in bands such as Burning Witch, Sunno O)))), Scorn, and Blind Idiot God. This record is a remix 12" record, though not in the usual sense bandied about by skinny tie-wearing fools. The 12" remix adds some thick squall to a song -- 'No Joy' off their first record (Southern Lord). It comes off as a dense and oppressive crush that fits comfortably into the post-nuclear universe of the Load Records sound, but also into the afterworld metallic funhouse of Khanate. James Plotkin administers mix on both sides."

"Debut record from Providence, RI based sludge station managers, Vincebus Eruptum finds the band generating some dense spew. Features Dan St. Jacques of Olneyville Sound System/Landed. Features guitar, bass, drums with deranged screams from the dungeon. Topics addressed are surely of adult origin but include wholesome activities such as human hygiene, disagreements with strangers, and illicit drug use. The sound? Definitely in the heavy side: think Eyehategod and Mayhem for reference. Big guitars, skull pounding drums and hell spawn bass combine for a raunchy skull burn for those liking their rock hard."

Kites has toured the netherworld of the Middle West of the United States of America and put out a shingle that few can deny. "San Francisco noise metal dive bomber jazz aggressors Total Shutdown is a 5 piece bass guitar keyboard sax drummer screecher band that flails about, stopping, starting, with their minute-long, tantrum-like songs. Think weirdo deconstructos like Monochid with short attention spans. The band likes to fancy themselves as Bernard Stoltzmen's (ESP-Disk domo) mohawked other brother. This is full length #2 for them. "The USA Is a Monster is a brilliantly fried two-piece guitar and drums band of sun spotters hailing from Brooklyn, NY. The band has roved the planet with instruments strapped to their backs playing the tops of mountains, skin-melting deserts, and rusted out America. The band has trekked across Europe, America (too many times to count), and Mexico. The sound of the record is a synapse firing melt of rock and other-worldly whisper. The rock goes from balls out to a gentle, massaging hand reaching into your cortex. Think astral plane hitchhikers like Gong and Sabbath in the same mental fart as Load two piece terrorists. The fidelity of this record is total."

"Norwegian three piece Noxagt come at you with record #2. Bass, drums and viola configured for maximum damage to ear canals. This record swings hard my friends, rocks like a demon and has some majestic dynamics.
The Iron Point
even has Nils Erga's (Noxagt's viola player) octogenarian grandfather singing on one track. Noxagt is for fans of hard rock and swinging unconventional riffage like the Dirty Three, dirty crawl such as the Melvins, and single minded pummel like label-mates/touring partners Lightning Bolt."

"Demonic wails from Providence -- bearded guitar-orists. Frothing fast leads, crunching power, and wailing screams at a planet choking on its own vomit. The kids are truly insane. Two guitars and drums. Features a past member of the USAisamonster clan for added incestual sensuality. Artwork on this record is constructed from 24K gold and inscribed by a team of middle earth dwarves in the smitty halls of hell. Gold will be the currency the world uses after George Bush destroys this cursed ball of dirt known as Earth. For ball park references think Voivod and Man Is The Bastard."

"Robo generated psychic booty pulse coupled with metro scrambled drumstick action. Battle station personnel on this disc includes Brian Chippendale of Lightning Bolt and Meerk Puffy of Forcefield. The duo have oscillators working overtime in the psychic war deck and gabba friendly drums. The sounds on this record are the hustle and bustle of bass-bin boom on the space throughways of the Milky Way circa 3167 A.D. Slowed beats with the force of tree roots hitting supertanker hulls. Vast radio dish networks with squelch and pulse tremors using solar systems as tweeters and white dwarfs as shredded woofers. Your head is caving in, your eyes are melting. Time is space and colors are sound. All is brown, hail the ramparts, to the battle stations."

"Clipped and chopped radio beamings from a Middle American bunker, Metalux bring a rodeo of galactic proportions home to your speakers. M.V. Cärbon and J. "From the sooty corridors of the rusted out skeleton of Baltimore, Nautical Almanac has taken the urban crack of electronic halftime entertainment and dragged it squarely into the times of horse and buggies. As the band clearly states no electricity or computers were used in the music making process. The sounds generated are from machines specifically built for the recording process or from real lab experience. Custom equipment made of weird alloys of plastic, leather, wire, and rubber. Longtime collaborators Carly Ptak and Twig Harper worked on this record along with 10 other guests from wall-to-wall of this saggy country: Forcefield, Paperrad and Costes associates were all involved. Nautical Almanac has records on Hanson and is an integral forefather of much of the MidWest noise scene. The band has many other releases on its own label Heresee. Wanna understand the throb of shirtless noise boys and girls in Michigan? Climb onto this crisco-coated locomotive and get the real deal of steel. Answers not included and sound not found."

"The CD version of the previously LP-only release. Features a bonus collaboration track between Kites and Prurient. Another jammed-elevator mismatch between two of Providence, RI's hottest pedal jackers and circuit board melters. Kites has a record on Load already and his side of the split evokes a crunchy square toned melodic flair with organic almost organ-fueled Disneyland melodies. These are the rockers. Prurient is another Providence-based sound artist doing low toned rumble jammed up against cassette culture screech. Live shows are a blur of power and volume. Prurient has releases on Ground Fault recordings and is one of the artists on the RRR Records Boxset
New England
. Yes the cream of the noise crop. This record is a bit more subdued in all out attack and more drenched in total murk-o-phonic atmosphere. Percussive chug and downer vibes."

"San Francisco-based Burmese spew forth a bile stuffed plume of thick dirge on their third full length. Recorded by Weasel Walter this blackened-to-the-core slab manages to fuse the bleak Whitehouse (the band not the building) world vision to an underwater plastic explosive dolphin attack on all that is right and just with family values. The sounds here tend to generate comparisons to mud pilots like the Swans and Eyehategod except that Burmese use two drums AND two basses. Previous records for Planaria and Tumult have sketched out a similar murky vision, but this record raises fidelity to a notch nearer to the seconds right before the hammer falls on any given weekend's convenience store heist. Not depressing musically, just very realistic and heavy."

"Never before has a band managed to erase themselves. New York City's Sightings have risen to the challenge of negation with this 'what the fuck' of a record that rolls the twenty sided dice to dematerialize any trace of guitar, bass and drums into proton dust floating microns on top of the speaker cone. Minimal, yes. Previous records have gone from favorites at magazines as chocolate and peanut butter as the Wire and Terrorizer. Past records have been steaming knee burn befuddled by German technoid impulse and Yoko-damaged Beatles-busting intensity. A new icy coolness is added to the steaming soup this time allowing the sounds of mouth breathing to open up the record into a drug-fueled nightclub beast humping a bass bin as the sun rises."

"Providence Rhode Island's White Mice are a three piece (bass, drums and oscillator) that generate enough round and square wave tones to bring a bonanza bus of nuns three feet (.91 m) off the ground. Combining the menacing (kinda slouched) posture of black metal with blistering oscillator attack is nothing new, but White Mice bring the game to your hometown. The band does dress like lab butchered white mice when playing live. Trainspotters looking for the Riyl attack: I say Brainbombs, Melvins, Mayhem, and similar riffraff. "Like a group-groped Helen Keller all too smacked out to protest, the New York City based Excepter weaves a dangerous course through the orange cones of cortex- caressing sound. Drawing from boom-box emitters as disparate as Chrome, Comus and that weird-ass Indian techno music you heard eating that samosa. Frequently lumped in with bands in their zip code like Gang Gang Dance, Sightings, and Animal Collective and the No Neck Blues Band, they are actually much more of a confrontational question mark. Lots of floor crawling stage exclamations make the band more slippery than a greased watermelon. With a lineup jamming out unclear instrumentation but perhaps including detritus of Casios, battery needin' samplers, six string part catalogs and occasional percussion, they manage to craft a deeply and creepily eerie sound that includes sounds from all over the radio dial. One could easily relax to this record and have one's heart forget to stop beating."

"Dangerous dirge blasts out of the tail pipe of Norway's ghost rider band Noxagt's third and self-titled record. Gone is the Nil's Erga's viola that led the chariot races on the last two Noxagt records on Load, replaced with Anders Hana (of Ultralyd) on spring-loaded guitar. Whereas the past two records flung tarballs at the idea of hard rock in the 21st century, this third record crawls from the ooze with a determined and wiry intent to bring you to your knees with stark riff power and bludgeoning rhythmic density. This is Noxagt's strangest turn from instrumental sludge helmeted Vikings to staple jointed snake running dunt rock doctors. The lineup on this record is Kjetil Brandsdal (of Noxagt) on bass; Frode Gjerstad (leader of the Circulasione Totale Orchestra) on alto sax, clarinet; Anders Hana on electric guitar; and Morton Olsen on drums. The seven compositions on this record definitely possess an avant-garde schooled energy that is heavy but also wielding a downtuned rock vibe. And I am in no mood to argue... its got moments of beautiful song and scary blurt. The collaboration sound, you ask? Very much the collision of these two entities: the soundz of Rylan's homemade electronics butting up against Nace's splayed guitar, all the while punctuated by the free jizz drum rambo of Corsano. The record has several burners, and plenty of moments of parking lot moan and search. Really, a record like this has not come out since ESP-Disk released that last awful Godz record. FACT!"

"Iron Valley's bedazzled bunch spring forth with a stunner of a record that drones, moans, chortles and squeaks in completely unexpected ways. Beefheart-soaked and strangulated guitar tactics, double mutter drumming, and bass all collide in uncharted territory with hysterical vocal yelps to make this record advance to the head of the class in your record pile.Think of this band in the unlikely company of the real R n' R Hall of Famers like Half Japanese, Thinking Fellers Local 182, and Arab On Radar. Load Records is insisting you listen to this record as it features instrumental diversity with horns, synths, basses, guitars, and all manners of percussion. The songs on this record are not all storm and flash as there are moments of quiet beauty, like a candy bar found in a pair of pants not worn for months. A truly refreshing listen, its got spasm and moan."

"In the early 1990s, the independent/DIY music world was a very serious place. Enter Men's Recovery Project, intent on pulling the pants down and spoiling the soup of all that was well and good. When no one wanted guitars to sound like puking pigs, they did it ... when synthesizers were being thrown out and ridiculed, they dressed up like Patrick Henry and ate them. The world was retarded and they were the geniuses. This double LP counterpart to the Kill Rock Star's CD (same track listing) assembles the best moments of MRP from their full lengths, split releases, compilation appearances, and 7" tracks to give a much-needed telling of the story of this essential band. For references you might want to check off Chrome, Residents and similar jolly ranchers."

slams into hyperdrive for a full 60-minute ride. The songs are dense and constructed from an intense three week recording session in a psychic sweatbox. The band has blurred differences to any other sound pirates with a primal base and new musical vocabulary fueled by chemistry altering volume and SONGS! Throbbing low end played on a 300-foot long bass and kick drums the size of Exxon supertankers, all stretched into a triumphant war stomp all walks can love. With just bass and drums (a two piece band you see) they have constructed the densest sound imaginable..."

"Diaspora tribesmen from the swamp stricken parishes of New Orleans laid this doubly effective soul stroke to tape before the waters rose. The sounds they get burrow to the heart of the matter with reverb tanked slo-mo and urban howl forming a durable disc of genuine interactive musicality. A keeper and a grower. This is the band's umpteenth record and they really stretch out on this record and unfurl. You can hear their patented brand of lethargo Flipper-isms as if from a tunnel down. Also coming through is some noontime yodeling the Kirkwood's perfected on
Meat Puppets II
, slowed to a chug. Definitely on their own musical plane to be reckoned with."

"While for many this is going to be a side project of Brian Gibson, this dashboard messiah of a record is a creeping keeper. Rich Porter (he of Bug Sized Mind), adds some melody muscle to stuff some tissue into the training bra of this submarine racer. Nothing like Lightning Bolt, this is more a Tangerine soaked, dream pillow padded melodica that Kraftwerks its way into your main vein. Looking for reference points? Think Zombi, Yellow Magic Orchestra and John Carpenter's
Escape From NY
soundtrack, .i.e smooth as butter creep scapes. Wizardzz has been accused of sporting a prog rock groove, so stuff this in your stockings you '06 version hacky sackers."

"Rewired neural strum and groam from the one man operation known as Kites. One minute EZ sounds pump from your jambox, the next a squaretone boxes you upside the head. Very much in the tradition of new school noize croppers such as Wolf Eyes and Die Yellow Swans, but turbolaced with a mutant virus of melody and folkery. Yes, acoustica based acid melt. Features a (beautiful)collaboration with Erin Rosenthal from Udog. Kites has played with the cream of today's new sounds krewz including Wolf Eyes, Double Leopards, Hair Police and many others and is considered a master on his own homemade equipment."

"A cold and chopped journey awaits you in this collaboration between electronic duo Metalux and sound levitator, John Wiese. Vocals are chopped and oscillation wave forms move themselves into long sheets of ribbon thin taffy with confusing intent. The middle ground in this collaboration has a coldwave appeal that clicks with fans of throbbing rhythmic noise like Wolf Eyes and Forcefield. This record is not noise however, more a full blown Kevorkian cocktail of reverberated malaise. The seven unnamed tracks flow one into the next with a rebounded tape smack that does not forget foot bounce, while keeping the main dome fully occupied with variable speed vox fukkk and equipment groan. This one is for the heads and takes notions of either artist to places where neither artist is safe going. This is for late nights and early mornings."

"The fifth release as a two piece from this Bedford-Stuyvesant, NY duo knows as The USA is a Monster. From when your skinny finger hits 'PLAY,' this record roars out of the gates with banshee-driven fury. Definitely taking cues from chariot drivers such as Rush, Magma, Lightning Bolt, but blasting into their own regions of otherworldly rockulation. Whereas the last record was a concept-driven epic of over 70+ minutes with frequent rural electricity free moments, this record pulls wheelies around Stonehenge in a little over 45 minutes. The songs are a bit more direct this time out and feature use of Gitmo crowd busters syntho action as well as the patented guitar4 olympiadz the band is famed for on the undie rock railroad."

"Documenting a 2002 sojourn to Japan that featured some slathering improv between Jim O'Rourke (snthi, noise), Mats Gustafsson (sax, noise), and Thurston Moore (guitar, noise). Although the purpose of the visit might have been to find bagloads of righteous collector-styled records, this recording flops onto the sidewalk with some of that old salted slug action you know -- deep breaths with a deadly spasm. The sounds here really get electro-acoustic in the same vein as leather elbowed warriors like Toop and Henri, but with scrappy crappy horizontal huddle of minds flowing with the JUICE! Really an inspired record that brings each player's pedigree upfront. This is a hot-wired jazz, really free blowing and joyous, but not so obvious you'll feel like the second time around. You're a grown up now, listen to grown up music. Step up to the bar!"

"Coughs are a clamouring six piece wrecking crew with two drummers, a sax/keyboardist, a bass player, a guitarist, bass player and an unhinged lead singer. This motley crue comes at you with a hotwired milkshake of punked-out Red Bull rock. Easily putting on the most memorable live shows of the 2000s, lead singer Anya Davidson is a frothing wraith of unquestionable furious intent. Backed by a double drummer band using discarded 55 gallon oil barrels, Coughs brings the tribal whoomp to a blurry sandwich of fuzzed out organ/sax riffery and guitar slice. This is the new ROCK, be here at GROUND ZERO! Their previous record on Load Records
Fright Makes Right
, raised the bar on new panic-stricken punk stylings, and this record moves the limbo stick to impossible heights with its hi-fi/no-fi recording making it so hard for you to fight the feeling."
