Large sections of these pieces are improvised and I have attempted to preserve the spontaneity of this special evening by presenting my first concert in Moscow exactly as it was played. I hope in some way my offering of this evenings music reflects the deep respect I hold for the great musical traditions of Russia and the Masters who have reached for the stars before me with their awesome genius." -- Terry Riley.

Artist: BATAGOV, ANTON
Title: The Wheel of the Law
Label: LONG ARMS RECORDS (RUSSIAN FEDERATION)
Format: 3CD
Price: $34.00
Catalog #: CDLA 2040CD
2002 release in stock for the first time. Massive triple CD that is perhaps the greatest new minimalist work of the past 10 years. Recorded in 1999, this is Batagov's opus, long pieces for organ, glockenspiel, xylophone, etc. Great titles like closing 69-minute work: "Liberation Through Listening in the Between" -- which finalizes this truly extravagant experience. Kyle Gann referred to Batagov as "like Reich on vodka." It also reminds of forgotten classics like Michael Vetter's Zen -- Glocken. Long Arm's description: "New big work of the one of the leading Russian composers Anton Batagov inspired by Buddhist's spiritual practice. Unless one sees the Buddha in one's mind, Nirvana is obscured. Although the Wisdom of Nirvana and the Ignorance of the Samsara illusorily appear to be two things, they cannot truly be differentiated. It is an error to conceive them otherwise than as one. Erring and non-erring are, intrinsically, also a unity. By not taking the mind to be naturally a duality, and allowing it, as the primordial consciousness, to abide in its own place, beings attain deliverance. The error of doing otherwise than this arises not from Ignorance in the mind itself, but from not having sought to know the nature of mind. Seek within thine own self-illuminated, self-originated mind whence, firstly, all such concepts arise, secondly, where they exist, and, lastly, whither they vanish." (Guru Padmasambhava. Self-Liberation Through Seeing With Naked Awareness). Kyle Gann: "The Wheel of the Law luxuriates in relentless rhythmic repetition for meditative purposes, accompanied by texts which speak of Buddha-mind and voidness."

Artist: CAGE, JOHN
Title: Four Walls
Label: LONG ARMS RECORDS (RUSSIAN FEDERATION)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: CDLA 2048CD
Performed by: Alexei Lubimov (piano), Marianne Pousseur (soprano). Live performance at Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival, Austria In the night of July 8/9, 1994, recorded by WDR Koeln. Music for the Dance Drama, choreographed by Merce Cunningham, New York 1944, for piano solo and voice. "What are 'Four Walls'? Is it no so that the four noble truths comprise a series of four sounds? Incidentally, when there are four, there always will be a place for a fifth. However when there are more than seven -- it starts to be dangerous. A piece begins with a chord -- the sound emblem of the name joHn CAGE (the letters correspond with the Latin names for the notes) and is all constructed on diatonic permutations of the motto, derived from the name, with the addition of the notes D and F, which add up to an octave. (If one has the wish, one could assemble other words from this set of notes-letters.)"
