Artist: GOLDMANN, STEFAN
Title: Aurora/Beluga
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: MACROM 001EP
"His Sleepy Hollow on Innervisions is regarded as the anthem of 2006, gaining respect from all over the place. This year Stefan Goldmann is back with his own label Macro and the next level of post-minimal modernism: 'Aurora' and 'Beluga.' Both already are a central part in the sets of Richie Hawtin, Âme, Luciano, Damian Lazarus, Loco Dice, Steve Bug, Peter Kruder and the lucky few who already have it on CD-R. Stefan has released through high profile labels like Innervisions, Perlon, Ovum and Classic. He recently also became one of Europe's most in-demand remixers with highly acclaimed reworks for Blackjoy and Marc Romboy. Stefan outings are genre-bending and of the utmost quality."

Artist: GOLDMANN, STEFAN
Title: Lunatic Fringe/The Bribe
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: MACROM 002EP
"We thought we had made a strong statement with Macro 1, but once we were giving away CDRs of our next outing to our DJ friends, it started growing on us this was going to be far bigger than we had expected. The response to the A-side was already super huge, but things really got out of control when clubbers were also exposed to what is the B side here. One DJ even called us from Ibiza, pointing his mobile at a crowd going totally mental over our record. Work at the office was kinda different after that. 'Lunatic Fringe' is a warped and twisted 10-minute house excursion featuring one of the most memorable vocal performances of the last decade, underlaid with a dramatic synth line that moves all over the place. Stefan Goldmann, who already caused havoc with his releases for Innervisions and Perlon, once again proves he's able to shift things to a totally different level -- delivering a supreme cut that thrills in main sets and spreads bliss in the morning hours. Hammered by all of our favorite house and techno DJs alike. Dark beauty! 'The Bribe' has nothing short but this year's most remarkable, mind-bending melody line, causing massive waves of euphoria from Ibiza to Berlin to New York. Don't be fooled by this one being on the B: this gem was quickly picked up by the likes of Richie Hawtin, Jerome Sydenham, Peter Kruder, Ivan Smagghe, Josh Wink and Steve Bug, raving at us what incredible reactions they get -- and making Macro 2 the most enthusiastically anticipated release this summer. The package is rounded off by the heavily experimental noise journey of 'Nothingface,' giving you a 3-way set of complete frenzy. Stefan Goldmann is on fire! Macro too."

Artist: NAMLOOK VS PEPE BRADOCK
Title: Subharmonic Atoms
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: MACROM 004EP
"An incredible EP with Namlook exploring the edges of minimal techno and deep ambient, while the remixes are Pépé Bradock's most dancefloor-oriented works in ages! Macro delivers a stunning release by a man who has not only produced 3 collaborative albums with Richie Hawtin, but also runs the ultra influential FAX label with an artist roster ranging from Speedy J to Bill Laswell to Klaus Schulze: Namlook is a true electronic pioneer in a league of his own. The track 'Subharmonic Atoms' was produced back in 1995 and is re-released by Macro as a long out -of-print electronic prototype on the edge of minimal techno and ambient. But don't think this is a retro affair: 'Subharmonic Atoms' sounds incredibly fresh and proves it is as groundbreaking, innovative and timeless as Jeff Mills' early Axis works or Hawtin's Concept1 series. Entirely remastered from the original source and cut in unparalleled sound quality, it is available on a single 12" side for the first time ever. The release is completed with nothing short but French remix master Pépé Bradock's triumphant return to the dancefloor. His versions of 'Atoms' are rocking, upfront house-burners, which his fans have been waiting for since 2003's Intrusion EP. Definitely one of this 2008's hottest packages!"

Artist: GOLDMANN, STEFAN
Title: Radiant Grace
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: MACROM 005EP
Stefan Goldmann presents Radiant Grace, and the title track proves that there actually is a next level after minimal and the new deep house movement. An irresistible chord figure is set against a growing string section, building up in a synth-fueled peak -- great for a late night house set or a Sunday morning. Rave support already from Ricardo Villalobos, Dixon and Âme. "Prefecture" is future-forward -- a skippy chord figure sets the groove, while sharp tones set the mood

Artist: GOLDMANN, STEFAN
Title: Voices Of The Dead
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 5x7"
Price: $57.00
Catalog #: MACROM 006EP
Marco Recordings releases a strictly-limited box set containing five 7" records by Stefan Goldmann that comprise the album Voices Of The Dead. With his releases for Innervisions, Perlon and Macro, Goldmann has been a key figure of post-minimal techno and the renewal of house music. This album is a distinctively different affair though, reaching far beyond dancefloor electronics. Starting a trilogy of concept albums, Stefan Goldmann searches for the common root of all music in an electroacoustic setting. Limited edition of 500.

Artist: GOLDMANN, STEFAN
Title: The Transitory State
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 2CD
Price: $21.00
Catalog #: MACROM 007CD
With his releases for Innervisions, Perlon and Macro, Stefan Goldmann has been a key figure at the cutting-edge of post-minimal techno and the renewal of house music. With The Transitory State, he finally unleashes his highly-anticipated debut CD. Two separate albums in one package -- a double whammy with benchmark club tracks on CD1 and electro-acoustic avant-garde tracks on CD2. CD1 features some of today's most significant underground anthems, including "Sleepy Hollow" and "Lunatic Fringe" -- both voted top 10 tracks of the year in polls by Groove, Resident Advisor and De:Bug, seriously crossing boundaries with heavy DJ support all across the board, from Richie Hawtin to Carl Craig to Laurent Garnier to Gilles Peterson. The entire collection ranges from the lush after-hour bliss of "Prefecture," to the dark modernism of "Blood," to peak-time frenzy with "The Bribe." All tracks have been carefully edited exclusively for this release by the artist and six appear on CD for the first time ever, thus adding brand new and previously-unreleased tracks and parts. CD2 contains the album Voices Of The Dead, which will also be released as a limited edition 5x7" vinyl box set. Starting a trilogy of concept albums, Stefan Goldmann searches for the common root of all music in an electro-acoustic setting. From this album, "Turret" is already renowned as the intro sequence of Richie Hawtin's groundbreaking DE9 Transitions mix compilation. The artist explains: "there is tension between two notes, hard-to-define background information that at a closer look is found everywhere -- within the music of Coltrane and Stravinsky, death metal and 9th century Byzantine chants. If there is anything like a total, secret common ground, than it's this information lurking in the background. These are the Voices Of The Dead." This is an album that reaches far beyond the scope of today's dance music.

Artist: SLAP
Title: Eden Now (Ricardo Villalobos Remix)
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: MACROM 008EP
Slap -- one of the most obscure and forward-thinking acts from the early '80s meets the spearhead of today's electronic music, Ricardo Villalobos. The originals are disturbingly brilliant electronic excursions, while Villalobos' jazz-fueled rework is one of the deepest mixes he has ever done. Vivid drums are built around a driving bass line, aiming the track right at the floor with rough claps. Imagine Miles Davis' Bitches Brew joined by Throbbing Gristle, playing "minimal techno" live. Essential!

Artist: RAUDIVE
Title: Cone EP
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: MACROM 009EP
Under his Raudive alias, Oliver Ho has created a trademark blend of future-forward house and techno, with enthusiasm all across the board from Ricardo Villalobos to Sven Väth. His Macro debut, with its 3 cuts of twisted house, brings some serious madness to the club: Raudive's signature beats get a strong jazz infusion with bits of saxophone and piano spinning around the pumping bass line. Maximum dancefloor appeal.

Artist: STRAVINSKY/STEFAN GOLDMANN, IGOR
Title: Le Sacre Du Printemps - Stefan Goldmann Edit
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: MACROM 010CD
Beloved and renowned Berlin-based producer and head of the Macro Recordings label Stefan Goldmann delivers a groundbreaking edit of a classic: a minimalistic cut-up on the edges of perception, celebrating one of the most thrilling works in music -- Igor Stravinsky's Le Sacre Du Printemps. Staying 100% true to the original score, he moves through over a dozen classic recordings of the work in 146 individually-treated segments. Nothing has been left out, nothing has been added. Still, everything totally changes every few seconds. Probably the most radical approach to editing, ever, and serving to officially electrify classical music to its core. These are some of the most revolutionary notes in the whole history of music. Written in 1913, Le Sacre Du Printemps redefined what music could be, much as Beethoven's Eroica had done a century before. While its debut performance caused massive riots, it has become one of the most celebrated works of music ever since. It has been performed and recorded by basically every renowned conductor and orchestra in the world, and is one of the most often played orchestral works of all times. Stefan Goldmann's edit is as radically innovative without ever messing with Stravinsky's intentions. With each listen, you will encounter a different performance, room, and recording set-up. This is a minimalistic journey into the depths of interpretation and concert hall acoustics, microphone positioning and mixdown decisions. Goldmann on the editing process: "Each time a different world in the headphones. Also the different shades of tape hiss in the recordings make it sort of an electroacoustic avant-garde work, as you can follow a floating noise contour throughout the work -- probably the clearest evidence of the edit process. It's putting a focus on the subtleties of orchestral interpretation -- a field often neglected and widely unknown to the electronic society. Identify the edits through analysis of interpretation parameters! It's a very quiet intrusion into the material and I have been extremely careful not to change sound color or to mask any relevant elements." This is an utterly masterful celebration of an original. This disc also features a "classic" 1957 live recording of Sacre with Pierre Monteux conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Artist: SALAZAR, SANTIAGO
Title: Arcade
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: MACROM 011EP
Santiago Salazar is a member of Underground Resistance, a Planet E recording artist, and producer of Los Hermanos. He is also known as one of Detroit's most forward-thinking producers and DJs. "Arcade" is an anthem that's 0% retro and 100% euphoria, spreading warmth and enthusiasm everywhere. Stefan Goldmann's remix is a 15-minute monster -- a fully-composed journey from deep reverberation, to drum machine-fueled peaks, to a Japanese flute and koto workout. Depth on a new level.

Artist: KRUDER, PETER
Title: Chordal/Law Of Return
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: MACROM 012EP
Peter Kruder is an emblematic name that inspires DJs, producers and clubbers worldwide. While he has enjoyed unprecedented success with Kruder & Dorfmeister, he has made only 3 solo singles. Kruder's debut on Macro showcases his deep, dark, dancefloor side. With a crisp harmonic sequence reminiscent of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, "Chordal" hijacks brains with its vacuous depth and sizzling details. "Law Of Return" is his signature take on deepness -- solemn chords wrapped around a hypnotic groove. Masterful.

Artist: COWLEY & JORGE SOCARRAS, PATRICK
Title: Soon
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: MACROM 013EP
This is the first single from the Catholic full-length by Patrick Cowley & Jorge Socarras. "Soon" is a dark proto-techno track with hypnotic lyrics and warped synths, while "Robot Children" builds on a rigid sequencer bass line and futuristic sound-design. The first remix is by Morgan Geist -- who transforms Cowley's trademark production sound into 2009. KiNK's remix is derived from the original's drum machine sounds, crossing boundaries from techno to dubstep to experimental.

Artist: COWLEY & JORGE SOCARRAS, PATRICK
Title: Catholic
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: MACROM 014CD
Macro Recordings announces the release of a full Patrick Cowley album, written and performed in collaboration with Indoor Life vocalist Jorge Socarras, that has never been released. This is NOT a reissue, nor is it material scrapped by the artists -- the original release of this album was delayed for 3 decades due to Cowley's tragic death in 1982. Recorded between 1976 and 1979, Catholic is a genre-bending concept album with a range from minimalistic proto-techno to synth-driven post-punk -- pre-dating LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture by almost 30 years. Patrick Cowley (1950-1982) remains one of disco's most influential artists and a key producer of the genre. With seminal hits like "Do You Wanna Funk," "Menergy" and "Megatron Man," his work for disco-superstar Sylvester and of course, his million-selling remix of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love," he created the soundtrack for a whole generation. Artists such as Depeche Mode, The Pet Shop Boys and New Order cite him as a major influence. With a whole new global-disco aficionado scene now playing his records every weekend across the world's clubs, this release is about to hit the streets right on time. It shows a much broader range than any Cowley or Socarras material available and gives a totally new perspective to one of the most inspiring eras in music history.

Artist: COWLEY & JORGE SOCARRAS, PATRICK
Title: Burn Brighter Flame
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: MACROM 015EP
This is the second single from the Patrick Cowley & Jorge Socarras album, Catholic, Oni Ayhun obscured Cowley's "Memory Fails Me" with his trademark darkness and took it to the edge of engineering. "Burn Brighter Flame" is the disco heart of the album, and also included here is a stunning instrumental. Morgan Geist's edit creates a dialog between the vocal and instrumental versions, offering even more variety for the DJ to mix in and out of this great tune.

Artist: ELEKTRO GUZZI
Title: Hexenschuss/Elastic Bulb
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 10"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: MACROM 016EP
Vienna's Elektro Guzzi challenge the meaning of "live" in electronic music. Bored of laptop sets? With a "classic" set-up of guitar, bass and drums, Elektro Guzzi align themselves with an unheard level of discipline, tightness and danceability. Produced by Patrick Pulsinger, these tracks are great dancefloor movers, state-of-the-art analog recordings and prime examples of Elektro Guzzi's incredible creativity. Played live with no overdubs, these tracks break down the demarcation separating man and machine.

Artist: RAUDIVE
Title: Paper EP
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: MACROM 017EP
Raudive aka Oliver Ho drops one of Macro's most dancefloor-centered, future-forward outings so far. "Paper" -- the chord, the bass, the strings! All deep ingredients are there. "Brittle" is "Paper"'s evil sister and a giant step forward in groove design. Its repetitious patterns put any record to shame that has ever been called hypnotic. 2010 is right here. The EP is rounded off with the shimmering "Sienna" -- a no-beat melodic variation set against the warmth of grainy crackle.

Artist: ELEKTRO GUZZI
Title: Elektro Guzzi
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: MACROM 018CD
Vienna's Elektro Guzzi challenge the meaning of "live" in electronic music. Bored of laptop sets? With a "classic" set-up of guitar, bass and drums, Elektro Guzzi align themselves with an unheard level of discipline, tightness and danceability. No computers, no pre-recorded loops, no solos. Probably the first time techno is really played live. As sequential as they may sound, they couldn't be more analog. The quest for the ultimate live presentation of techno has come to an end. Produced by Patrick Pulsinger (Hercules & Love Affair, M-Plant, Cheap), the album is a masterstroke resulting in great dancefloor movers, state-of-the-art analog recordings and a prime showcase of Elektro Guzzi's incredible creative capabilities. Played live with no overdubs, this record breaks down the demarcation line separating man and machine. Everything in techno has been done? You ain't heard nothing yet. Elektro Guzzi are not interested in exploring their minimal and dubbed-out soundscapes in long, epic jams, where coincidental ideas born out of improvisation are the unofficial band member. Elektro Guzzi are interested in structure. They produce and perform like any modern electronic producer and performer wanting that every element of a track is exactly where it is intended to be. There is no computer backup material they prepared earlier, no loops and things, no overdubs. However hard it is to believe, what you hear is 100% live. There, they connect the hypnotizing force of their analog techno with the visual treat of a band doing it all right in front of your eyes. You hear it, you witness it, and you dance.

Artist: RAUDIVE
Title: Chamber Music
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: MACROM 019CD
Over the past 14 years, London's Oliver Ho aka Raudive has gathered a worldwide following with his research into deep techno, through his legendary Meta label and with his unique DJ gigs from New York to Berlin to Tokyo. Introducing the Raudive alias, he created a reduced, sexy, dancefloor-centered wave of greatness for labels from Drumcode to Cocoon. This sound turned out to be highly attractive for the DJs to play and for the girls and boys to dance to. The unparalleled appeal of his beats left the usual minimal competitors sounding rather dull. Thus, Raudive quickly became the blueprint of techno modernism with one of today's most influential genre-bending production styles. With his Cone and Paper EPs, he is now a key artist of the ever-brilliant Macro family, and just having launched his own new Wires imprint, the man is more than on fire. Forming the hallmark of the Raudive saga, Macro unleashes the highly-anticipated debut album, Chamber Music. This album is both claustrophobic in sound design, reminiscent of the dark and sweaty concrete club spaces this music inhabits, and carries acoustic qualities of induced instrumental experimentalism. Bitches Brew-voodoo reeds, New York no wave voices and European avant strings spin a mesmerizing, dark patina around the ultra-sexy year-3000-rhythms. No wonder there's huge DJ support all across the board -- from Miss Kittin to Surgeon to Sven Väth to Jeff Mills. Massive, deep edge and one of 2010's finest albums, so far.

Artist: GOLDMANN, STEFAN
Title: The Maze
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: MACROM 020EP
The Maze tears boredom apart. The Maze burns the Declaration Of Dependence. The Maze takes the original rough, sweaty house sound of liberation to distorted excess and slams it right in your face. The Maze is house not just with a capital H, but with a capital O, U, S and E, too. Recorded in one take in an all-analog set up, Stefan Goldmann hooked up drum machines, distortion pedals and a Theremin-controlled fuzz box for the ultimate screaming machine jam.

Artist: ELEKTRO GUZZI
Title: Extrakt EP
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: MACROM 021EP
The Extrakt EP captures the latest state of Elektro Guzzi's incredible live sound, recorded in London with the outstanding capabilities of Brendon "Octave" Harding, the trusted engineer of dub legend Lee "Scratch" Perry, and mixed by mega-producer Patrick Pulsinger. The four cuts capture Elektro Guzzi's raw side, turning out dark, sexy grooves with an almost indie edge -- probably their most danceable and DJ-friendly studio material to date -- specifically produced for the vinyl format.

Artist: GOLDMANN, STEFAN
Title: The Grand Hemiola
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 2x12"
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: MACROM 022LP
Stefan Goldmann presents the first real innovation in the vinyl format in years! 144 locked grooves build a toolkit that breaks out of the limitation of one 4/4 cycle and brings unique possibilities to create complex polyrhythms just with two decks and a mixer. The Grand Hemiola loop toolkit overcomes the time restriction of locked grooves: one record contains loops in 4/4, the other in 3/4 (employing the time differences of the rotation rates 33 and 45 rpm). In the mix, they sum up to an extended cycle of 3x 4/4 or 4x 3/4 and enable building complex "3 over 4" polyrhythms ("Hemiolas"). You can mix loop into loop for hours without ever getting trapped. Additionally, the A & C sides contain a 6 full-track mini-album of haunted acoustics, haptic percussion and deep, rhythmic expression.

Artist: GOLDMANN, STEFAN
Title: Ghost Hemiola
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 2x12"
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: MACROM 022R-EP
Ghost Hemiola is a double vinyl set of empty locked grooves that contains nothing but its very own surface noise -- and physical structure. It is a sculptural revision of Stefan Goldmann's earlier locked groove-based double vinyl The Grand Hemiola, but it also serves as a genuine hauntological vinyl surface noise tool-kit. Pulling a knife or other tool to its grooves allows for cutting your own unique beats directly into the record. A total of 132 empty grooves allows for as many individual patterns to be created.

Artist: ELEKTRO GUZZI
Title: Live P.A.
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: MACROM 023CD
This is the second full-length release from Vienna's Elektro Guzzi, who play their brand of techno 100% live: no laptops, no loops, no sequences. Their unparalleled live success has made them a leader in the field at Sónar, Mutek, Berghain, Fabric, Amsterdam Dance Event, Time Warp, etc. Elektro Guzzi had the biggest head-start on the 2010 circuit, and it has always been considered a main advantage of having a band on stage: you can see and feel what you hear, and in techno this is only true for Elektro Guzzi. What sounded incredible on their debut album is a revelation live. They have made most laptop acts sound rather dull, and since then, they have been in fast-forward evolution mode. Live P.A. captures the latest state of Elektro Guzzi's incredible live sound, recorded in London with the outstanding mixing capabilities of Brendon "Octave" Harding, the trusted engineer of dub legend Lee "Scratch" Perry. The set, originally recorded for Resident Advisor, captures Elektro Guzzi's raw live side, turning out dark grooves with an almost indie edge -- probably their most appealing material to date. The CD version has been newly mixed by their producer Patrick Pulsinger (Hercules & Love Affair) and is available in full resolution for the very first time.

Artist: GOLDMANN, FRIEDRICH
Title: Late Works
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: MACROM 024CD
In a world of crossover and remixes, Macro is the first electronic label to release a CD of pure original works of a contemporary classical/avant-garde composer. Commemorating Friedrich Goldmann's 70th anniversary, the CD presents four key late works. In addition to the retail version, UK magazine The Wire will distribute 9,000 CDs to its subscribers. It is the first time The Wire has distributed a CD by a single German composer. The label and magazine searched for innovative channels of distribution, in order to surpass the restrictions of a niche market and reach an international audience with a background in other musics, including electronic. Friedrich Goldmann, who passed away in 2009, was one of Germany's most distinct composers of his generation. His works were commissioned and performed by leading interpreters, including the Berliner Philharmoniker, Pierre Boulez, Ensemble Modern, Arditti Quartet and Daniel Barenboim. His music is not only heard at leading German and European concert halls and festivals, but was also commissioned for major events like Expo 2000 and the 20th anniversary celebration of the fall of the Berlin Wall at the Brandenburg Gate. As a conductor he has recorded CDs with the works of Stockhausen, Henze and Rihm (for Deutsche Grammophon, Wergo, RCA and others). Friedrich Goldmann also was the academy professor who taught Paul Frick -- now successful with Brandt Brauer Frick in performing techno with the means of a classical ensemble. He is also the father of Stefan Goldmann, one of the leading producers and DJs of avant-garde techno. He therefore had influence on two key figures of experimentation at the intersections of classical and electronic music. Beginning with the delicate shimmer of "Haiku À 6," passing through the detailed treasury of "Ensemblekonzert 3" to the gripping vehemence of "Sisyphos Zu Zweit" and "Wege Gewirr Ausblick," Late Works covers this extraordinarily significant period of the composer's oeuvre. All recordings were either made live during the first performances (with rehearsal guidance by the composer) or in the studio shortly thereafter with the same performers. Being compiled according to this criterion, the CD makes for a holistic listening experience of Friedrich Goldmann's late works despite the differences in instrumentations and spaces.

Artist: GOLDMANN & FINN JOHANNSEN, STEFAN
Title: Macrospective
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 2CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: MACROM 025CD
Two DJs, one tracklist. Probably for the first time in the history of dance music, a release focuses on extracting the pure sound signature of the DJ. When the tracks to choose from are limited to one playlist, the sequencing decisions and mix styles of the DJs reveal their individualities as well as the different possibilities the music allows when formed into one continuous stream. Macrospective is the first conceptual double mix offering a 1-on-1 comparison of the art of DJing with two masters of the craft. But you'll also love it for being a comprehensive retrospective of one of the most intriguing contemporary label catalogs in electronic music. The two mixes by Macro founders Stefan Goldmann and Finn Johannsen highlight key works of the label (including poll-winners "The Maze," "Law Of Return," "Arcade" & "Lunatic Fringe"), bringing out the versatility and individuality of each track. Great music allows for more than a single interpretation. Who could better suggest one than the A&Rs behind Macro and the resident DJs at the label's residency at Berlin's legendary Berghain club? Finn Johannsen's mix is a one-take live journey through build-ups, peaks and comedowns, but also detours, distractions and surprises. Stefan Goldmann's alternative take is a carefully constructed "architectural" mix, locking specific turning points of the tracks to form an 80-minute dramatic composition of Macro's essence. By the way, both DJ mixes are vinyl mixes. In an era of dull mp3s, the aesthetics of Macro's carefully-cut record releases are the basis for this double album.

Artist: KRUDER, PETER
Title: Xenomorph/Vespertilio
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: MACROM 026EP
Xenomorph/Vespertilio follows up Peter Kruder's "Law Of Return" track that was a highlight, both in the music world in 2009 and in Macro's ever-brilliant catalog -- and one of the now most sought-after recent vinyl collectors' records. 2012 couldn't start deeper: detail-rich, dreamy, pushing enthusiastically forward into the new year. "Vespertilio" then moves between the off-center sound aesthetics of a Morricone soundtrack and the intensity of hypermodern sub-bass droppings. This is an irresistibly deep double package, exceeding even the boldest expectations.

Artist: ELEKTRO GUZZI
Title: Parquet
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: MACROM 027CD
Elektro Guzzi deliver one of the most thrilling live performance models for techno and an innovative leap in the art of band performance at the very same time. It's almost the antithesis to what a band is supposed to be. While they use guitar, bass and drums only, they take the most unusual playing techniques and put them together into a rigid mechanical form where it all makes instant, evident sense. Yet, if they had not performed live extensively, becoming audience favorites from Mutek to Sónar or Berghain to Fabric, it would be hard to believe this is really how the music is created. Parquet, their second studio album, sees them in an unprecedented monomaniacal techno mode. Throughout the nine tracks, the distinctions between instruments and roles are totally vaporized. While their instrumental approach is at the core of their aesthetics, it really doesn't matter anymore if one sound comes from a guitar or bass or drum -- it has all been merged into one sonic unit and all there is, is the music as a unified entity. While all the qualities of live performance are at hand -- real-time interaction, visual plausibility, instant miniscule adaptations -- it is a radical break with what group performances have been about so far. Parquet is as much a straight-up club music record as it is rich with nuances and details. Astonishingly, while being their most rigid and dance-centered work to date, it also holds outbursts of beauty with tonal lines, ringing overtones and warm resonances. The rhythms are stripped down to the core and structured for affecting longer stretches of perception. Every track comes with a distinctive, almost "branding" feature -- like the hypnotic meter-shifting line of "Affumicato," the gated chords of "Pentagonia" or the abridged rhythm of "Absorber." Actually, it all was recorded directly to analog tape. No edits, no overdubs. It's the man-machine in real time and a hint at the love Elektro Guzzi put in the process.

Title: Adem
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: MACROM 028EP
Stefan Goldmann's "Adem" presents a new concept of handling melodies to the world of house and techno. Pushy synths tuned to Arabian intervals, playfully pitch-bent around one repeated note that sticks to the kick as if its life depends on it. It's as if a parallel universe's acid has been invented in some lunatic asylum. This primitive melody is as alienatingly synthetic as it is offensively brain-dissolving. "Rigid Chain" is as detuned, yet strictly limited to a rogue off-beat bassline pumping in between metallic house drums.

Title: 17:50
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: MACROM 030CD
De-tuning notes has been central to house and techno since the early days in Chicago. 17:50 by renowned Berlin producer/Macro Recordings head Stefan Goldmann is where this bittersweet sound turns systematic: the whole Western harmonic standard is thrown overboard and replaced by pitch systems that yield beautifully alien yet incredibly catchy melodies, bass lines and chords. It is probably the first new melodic concept to enter house music since the days of acid. In a field of music whose innovations seemed to have come to an end, pitch-bending opens up radically fresh possibilities. Tones never stand still but are bent and re-tuned for maximum expression. As a result, even the most simple melodies sound exotically new and intriguing. Warm synths, analog drum machines and loads of dirty distortion shape the album's sound. 17:50 is as much about pitch going crazy as about celebrating a rough, vivid hardware sound. Bend the pitch and the mind will follow.

Artist: RAUDIVE
Title: Ruins/Visitor
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: MACROM 031EP
Raudive aka Oliver Ho heads home with two guilty dancefloor pleasures. Gritty surface, smooth bottom. For those damp, dimly-lit cellar clubs: low ceilings, fog, smoke, and all that. "Ruins" runs a relentless groove against angular guitar overtones, blowing out the valves of its amplifier. Metal sheets, rusty strings, sweaty bodies. "Visitor" is built on a naughty percussion sequence and is elevated by a morphed girl's inquiring voice straight out of a 1984 Shibuya version of Blade Runner. Kinky. Essential 2013.

Artist: ELEKTRO GUZZI
Title: Cashmere EP
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.50
Catalog #: MACROM 032EP
Cashmere takes Elektro Guzzi's signature man-machine sound up a notch. On the title-track, layers of circling, angular chords cause goosebumps, while a warmly pulsating foundation of bass and drums locks in the groove. The "Reverse Mix" does exactly what it says: reversing the arrangement and re-building the track back to front. On "Crack Fox" shifted bass lines and countering melodic scraps push the whole thing forward, all set off against ultra-steady drum work, swelling in lengthy waves towards eerie peaks.

Title: Live At Honen-In Temple
Label: MACRO RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: MACROM 033CD
Live At Honen-In Temple is a document of a one-off site-specific performance in one of the most impressive settings a live electronic concert could possibly ever have. Featuring a wealth of new and unreleased material, Stefan Goldmann has custom-tailored a sound world as clearly detailed as the hidden gardens of Honen-In. Microtonal drifts, metallic grids and delicate turns merge into a gleaming monolithic pull. Embedded in the slopes of the Eastern hills of Kyoto, Japan, the Honen-In Temple marks the boundary between city and forest. By day, only its outer gardens are accessible. For this intimate concert, Honen-In opened its doors to a handful of listeners, exposing its intricate inner halls and gardens. Specifically selected and arranged for this night and site, Stefan Goldmann's music goes through an hour of transformations. The side walls of the main hall removed, electronics unobstructedly merged into the surrounding acoustic environment, while daylight faded into the dark of night. This concert performance was part of the Villa Kamogawa artist residency by Stefan Goldmann in Kyoto, Japan.
