Artist: BONDE DO ROLE
Title: Gasolina EP
Label: MAD DECENT
Format: CD
Price: $6.00
Catalog #: MAD 079CD
5 track CD EP on Diplo's label. "Bonde do Role are officially the biggest thing to ever come out of Curitiba, Brazil (except maybe Wanderlei Silva). The Diplo-produced 'Gasolina' is gonna be on their debut LP in Spring 2007 on Domino/Mad Decent, but we figured it was about time they had some proper vinyl for DJs. It wasn't intended this way, but the EP is a nice overview of where Mad Decent is at right now. The original 'Gasolina' (which Diplo stretched out for the bonus beats and extended 12" mix) is easily the catchiest track Bonde's come out with yet, but somehow it came together in one afternoon with Marina and Diplo collaborating on the lyrics. Unruly Records' Scottie B & King Tutt represent the Mid-Atlantic with a textbook Bmore remix (nevermind that these dudes wrote the textbook...). Buraka Som Sistema slay on their remix, fusing their Kuduro styles with Bonde's bastard funk, and it's even got a verse from one of the best young MCs out right now, Petty. London transplants Radioclit round this thing out with a vicious electro remix that's already been getting some UK radio burn."

Artist: DJ BLAQ STARR
Title: Supastarr
Label: MAD DECENT
Format: 12"
Price: $8.00
Catalog #: MAD 080EP
"Something akin to the marriage of The Clipse, Carl Craig, and Peter Gabriel, the music of DJ Blaq Starr is a messy but a true product of the American inner city. Baltimore club music is a world that has no proper release at all -- but all the local kids can hum the lyrics by heart. It's a strange phenomenon now in its second generation, a black inner city subculture with roots in Motown and house. The foundations lie in hip-hop music but all beats remain at a frantic 130bpm tempo. The Supastarr EP is 100% Baltimore city. It's grindin' in city streets to late nights in the basement mixing music on stock PC speakers with street sounds of sirens and baby cries off in the background. Blaq Starr is one of a few young artists redefining the music that is gaining more worldwide notoriety -- it's a dirty house scene that has been isolated in the clubs and basements in Baltimore for 15 years and experiencing newfound life with a generation raised on crunk and snap music. DJ Blaq Starr makes a wall of sound, a syncopated riot, and isn't afraid to sing his ass off. This is violent, progressive soul music."
