Title: Não Wave - Brazil Post Punk 1982-1988
Label: MAN RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: MAN 001CD
Introducing the first release from Germany's Man Recordings: a definitive collection of 80s-era Brazilian new wave/post-punk. From the cries of the oposicionistas, to the obscure first Agentss 7" single, to clubs such as Napalm, Madam Sata, Rose Bom Bom, and Aeronauta, all the way to TV Globo, "não wave," reached the post-punk ghettos of Rio/São Paulo via US and European artists such as Gary Numan, Fad Gadget, Snakefinger, and Liquid Liquid. Through much of the 80s, dozens of releases revealed an invigorating and vigorous generation of bands: Ira!, Smack, Mercenárias, Muzak, Voluntários Da Pátria, Chance, Vzyadoq Moe, Akira S & As Garotas Que Erraram just to name a handful. After Brazil's release from 20 years of military dictatorship, the newly-found liberty the country experienced during the 80s generated an urban cultural explosion completely without precedent. São Paulo, the most industrialized city in the country and one of the largest metropolises in the world, found its cosmopolitan identity, generating a fabulous and radicalized underground circuit. Some of the featured artists on this release include Mercenárias, an all-girl group with attitude that could be compared to the Slits, Au Pairs or Liliput -- legitimate proto riot grrrls avant la lettre; AZUL 29 followed with their special brand of technopop; Muzak were a species of Brazilian Killing Joke; Voluntários Da Pátria sounded like a cross between Television, Talking Heads and XTC; Smack recalled PiL; Harry evoked Chrome or Executive Slacks; Akira S combined influences from Shriekback to A Certain Ratio with New York no wave, fusing real instrumentation with computer programming
-- cyberpunks before the genre existed. Other bands such as Chance and Fellini flirted with the principal local rhythm, samba, in a low-tech style that recalls early Cabaret Voltaire; Vzyadoq Moe were a group of post-adolescents from the interior of the state of São Paulo in the vein of Bauhaus. Meanwhile, in other cities provocative groups were also appearing, for example Black Future (from Rio de Janeiro, the dark antithesis to the sunny local style), DE FALLA, Atahualpa I Us Panquis, Sexo Explicito, and Divergencia Socialista. The country's capital,
Brasília, revealed an equally energetic scene, with bands such as Plebe Rude -- strongly influenced by The Clash -- and Legião Urbana. This last group, a crossbreed of The Smiths and U2, became the biggest band in the country. Some of the bands from the São Paulo scene (such as Ira!, initially influenced by Gang of Four, and Titãs) managed to break out of the underground and were given contracts by large recording companies. Most of the other groups stayed in the post-punk ghetto until they disappeared, as did the actual ghetto, at the end of the decade. The musical references of não wave were international, but the lyrics were written in Portuguese, frequently with liberating, poetic and political content. The tracks compiled in this collection give a healthy overview of não wave, and even though what was documented in the studios was less explosive than the live experience, it is still intriguing to hear how current some of these tracks sound. Only a tiny amount of overlap (3 tracks) with the equally amazing new Soul Jazz compilation covering the same scene: The Sexual Life of the Savages: Underground Post-Punk in São Paulo.

Title: Frenétiko
Label: MAN RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: MAN 008CD
This is the first full-length release from Brazil's Edu-K on Man Recordings. Edu K is undoubtedly one of Brazil's most talented contemporary musicians. As singer and front man of legendary Brazilian punk band De Falla, they released more than seven albums, varying their musical style from heavy metal to punk rock and funk, and also became known for their energetic live shows. In 2000, De Falla authored the hit pop song "Popozuda Rock n' Roll," a salute from the punks to Rio de Janeiro's baile funk movement which has since caused a global commotion. This track was first released on the Miami Rock 2000 compilation and then re-cast by Edu-K for 2004's Rio Baile Funk -- Favela Booty Beats compilation, then finally released as a 12" single in 2005 by Man Recordings. For Edu K, the bass sound from the favelas of the Sugarloaf City was punk in its very essence reborn with the sound of baile funk. This time, it wasn't three chords and a singer that made a song and a group, but three sampled loops and a street MC. The commotion continues with Frenétiko -- the first baile funk-inspired album ever to be released outside of Brazil. It's forty-five minutes of pure energy, blending the hottest sounds of 21st century Brazil into a breathtaking, musical masterwork. Call it baile punk, samba reggaeton or electro punk funk -- Frenétiko is Brazil's new millennium answer to the post-local, post-genre musical era we live in. It's a high energy mash up of kick ass music that is fresh and unique. Take "Funkeiro C.B.," which includes hardrock riffs, percussive electronic beats and the ecstatic MC shouting of Edu K and his brother/co-MC Chilli Willi, or "Faz Que Eu Gosto," where the electronic and melodic songwriting shines through. "Hot Mama" adds Cuban flavors to the booty bass, and "Sexxxy" starts as a reggaeton track and then speeds up seamlessly into an electro funk tune. Last but not least, there's the rocking "Gatas Gatas Gatas," the bass-slapping "Da Punk Funk" and of course "Popozuda Rock n' Roll." You won't find another Brazilian album sounding so fresh in 2006.

"Beatch From Brasil" mixes up berimbau and samba beats with electro-funk rhythm and soulful chords. "Funk Alemão" is a sonic reference to Berlin's construction site sounds of saws, jackhammers and trains, elegantly fused with beat science from his hometown. With his intelligent, sometimes ironic lyrics and his laid back, communicative attitude, Gringo has gathered a solid fan following in Rio -- mostly amongst the female cariocas. Considering the short time Gringo has lived in Rio, he has made it to the premiere league in the funk game, performing in endless radio and TV shows. MC Gringo loves to perform his songs in Portuguese, exercising the rapping techniques he learned in his German hometown, where he also played bass in a punk band with Basti Schwarz, one of the brothers of today's world famous DJ duo, Tiefschwarz. Upon moving to Rio, Gringo got funkified, writing his own lyrics and working on beat arrangements on his cheap PC. His first direct contact to the funk scene was MC Binho, a significant friendship of rap mixed with funk that led to dozens of joint shows. After three and-a-half years of hard work, Gringo is now proud to present Gringão, featuring lead vocals by the main MC himself on mostly all the tracks. Guest MCs are his long-time collaborator MC Binho, MC Dandão and MC Dolores, who has already participated in the Funk Mundial release by Crookers on Man Recordings. Large parts of the release were produced by both MC Gringo and Amazing Clay in the infamous Amazing Studios next to the Maracana stadium in Rio De Janeiro. Other producers involved are DJ Sandrinho and DJ Rafael. With song topics ranging from mini bus travels to mass assaults on Rio's shores to Brazilian methods of leg-shaving, Gringão contains various styles of baile funk, all defined by the magical voice and personality of MC Gringo.

ZZK is to cumbia what Man Recordings is to baile funk -- mixing up one raw, regional music style with the best of various genres to create a unique new sound: pan-Latin-American dancehall mixed with reggaeton, hip-hop and bass music. Featuring Frikstailers, MC Maiquinho, El Remolón, MC Marina, Douster, MC Dandão, Chancha via Circuito and MC Pretinho.

Title: Funk Mundial
Label: MAN RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: MAN 041CD
Since its inception in November 2006, the Man Recordings vinyl 12" series Funk Mundial has pushed the boundaries of what is called "Brazilian music." For the series, Man Recordings boss Daniel Haaksman commissioned some of the world's hottest producers in electronic dance music to collaborate with various hand-picked baile funk MCs from Rio. Artists like Crookers, Feadz, Jesse Rose, Count+Sinden, Seiji, Riva Starr and Stereotyp created a new musical hybrid: Funk Mundial, the international interpretation of Rio De Janeiro's 21st century party music. The compilation presents the world debut of the global view on the Brazilian music phenomenon called baile funk -- in Brazil simply named "funk." The tracks on the compilation stem from producers that live in cities like Paris (Feadz), Milan (Crookers), London (Count+Sinden, Seiji, Riva Starr), Berlin (Jesse Rose, Oliver $, Daniel Haaksman), Vienna (Stereotyp, Makossa Megablast), Chicago (DJ C) and Buenos Aires (Chancha Via Circuito, Frikstailers). Thus, on their Funk Mundial contributions, they added their particular local club music flavor to their exclusive productions. You can find a speed garage banger that fuses London's hi-speed and heavy bass club sound with a baile funk MC contribution by MC Thiaguinho. The Funk Mundial compilation features the West London broken beat of producer legend Seiji, teaming up with one of the most experienced MCs in the Rio baile funk biz, MC Dolores. There's the Parisian producer Feadz, who worked on his Funk Mundial track with 8 year-old MC Wesley, a child MC from Rio, and added his high-quality beat and analog synth skills, mashing up classical European music with heavy Miami beats. The compilation features the club anthem "Soca Ali Baba" featuring MC Dandão by Italy's Crookers, who recently rose to world fame with their remix of Kid Cudi's "Day+Night." Another outstanding track is house music's leading DJ and producer, the Berlin-based Jesse Rose and his co-op with Deize Tigrona, the queen of baile funk. Plus there are many more collaborations and three exclusive tracks. Get ready for the global remix of Rio baile funk. Funk Mundial -- 16 amazing, fresh tracks that make any party rumble. Other artists include: MC Leka, MC Jennifer, Edu K + Joyce Muniz, Rob B, Duda Siri, DJ Panko, Gaiola Das Popozudas, MC Pretinho, MC Maiquinho, and MC Jorge Stylo.
