Based in Geneva, Switzerland, producers Crowdpleaser & St-Plomb have delivered a groundbreaking album for Mental Groove Records imprint MGLTD. Both well-traveled DJs now also have a growing list of productions as well as remixes to their credit and their friendship allowed the ambitious and futuristic vision of 2006 to develop over 11 titles. Also featuring fellow Swiss residents Kate Wax, Paris The Black Fu, Stéphane Perrinjaquet and Kalabrese, it's a demonstration of mastery fusing old school techno and house with forward-thinking sound design and depth of feeling. Opening and ending with majestic ambient-experimental tones, the album also features the quirky, jazzy "Cash On Time" with Kate Wax in top form, and "Shift" with a truly surreal vocal by Paris The Black Fu. The seven other tracks go beyond the insect-like, naturalistic but abstract and nerdy sounds of microhouse to reveal a new, playful musique concrete techno whose sound effects seem to be produced or from everyday objects with a tragic, purposefully clumsy human touch we can all relate to. Thomas Brinkmann also brought his mastering skills to the equation. This record skips levels in the game. It's like a funky robot with real tears of joy and sorrow. "Crowdpleaser is not only one of the label's earliest artists, but he's also responsible for most of the Mental Groove artwork as //Schönwehrs Graphism Büro (www.schonwehrs.com). Crowdpleaser is also doing loads of collaboration, with Kalabres (Perlon), Plastique de Rêve (Gigolo), Kate Wax and recently DJ Ly Sander, who is releasing here his first EP ever. "This is number one of three limited edition singles from the 2006 album by Crowdpleaser & St-Plomb: a fusion of house and techno old & new, with hair-raising sound design, bootyful grooves and true depth of feeling. The infectious shuffle of '1er Mai' has a deliberately easy-going pace which draws us into a round of hypnotic machine tango. Echoing bells left and right grab our attention from time to time but, as they say, the devil is in the details: quirky sounds are being tweaked in mysterious and funky ways. It starts innocently enough, then by mid-track we're hooked to its psychedelic ride. Bathed in shimmering static and ghostlike modulations, chock-full of Chicago and Detroit signifiers, '18 Years' is a majestic, dancefloor-tested play on memory with creaking doors made out of violins.
