PHARAOH OVERLORD
Title:
II
Label:
NO QUARTER
Format:
CD
Price:
$13.50
Catalog #:
NOQ 003CD
"Formed in Finland by guitarist Jussi Lehtisalo, the songwriting force behind cult Finnish band Circle, Pharaoh Overlord came together with the intention of creating vastly minimal, psychedelic music. Some may call it 'Stoner Rock' -- but we're not gonna go there, although it is true that anyone with an altered state of mind could easily get lost in the repetition found on Pharaoh Overlords' second record. Influenced by the groove and fuzz of 70's hard rock, the Overlords strip it down to the bare essentials of minimalism. Jamscapes built around heavy rhythms that are just waiting to explode, but they rarely do, and that's the beauty of it. The six tracks on this album stretch across time and space where the quietest rumble of a guitar can feel like the end of the world.
II
may certainly put you in a relaxed state, but don't get too comfortable, man. Trouble is right around the corner."

ELECTRIC TURN TO ME
Title:
Electric Turn To Me
Label:
NO QUARTER
Format:
CD EP
Price:
$8.00
Catalog #:
NOQ 004CD
"Formed in the summer of 2002 by Blake Fleming (ex-Laddio Bolocko, the Mars Volta), Marcus DeGrazia (ex-Laddio Bolocko), guitarist James Wilk (ex-Imaginary Numbers) and German singer Silke, ETTM draws the best inspiration and instrumentation from the most creative bands of the '60s (Love, Pretty Things, The Doors), and updates it for the new millennium. Featuring imaginative powerhouse drumming, keyboard-propelled bass and vintage organ melodies, intertwined guitars, and Silke's strong vocals which recall, if anything, a more world weary, less glam Siouxsie Sioux, ETTM create intricate searching pop songs, achieving that delicate balance of using familiar sounds and elements, yet presenting them in a wholly original way."

ELECTRIC TURN TO ME
Title:
Clouds Move So Fast
Label:
NO QUARTER
Format:
CD
Price:
$6.50
Catalog #:
NOQ 005CD
"The second EP from Electric Turn To Me finds the band moving in a more focused direction. Almost impossible to describe using typical music journalist terminology, Electric Turn To Me play a kind of pop music that is unique all to itself. Dark and synth driven yet with an urgency reminiscent of early punk. Songs that twist and turn but with melodies so familiar they'll bury themselves in you're head for months to come. Like their previous outfits (Laddio Bolocko, Dazzling Killmen) Electric Turn To Me are truly forging their own path in a world where independent music often becomes stale and commercialized. Oblivious to the trends of the moment, they are merely attempting to absorb and recreate the energy and originality of the bands they love." Last copies of this now deleted item.

EARTH
Title:
Legacy of Dissolution
Label:
NO QUARTER
Format:
CD
Price:
$13.50
Catalog #:
NOQ 006CD
This features exclusive remixes (commissioned by No Quarter) of classic Earth songs by Mogwai, Russell Haswell, Jim O'Rourke, Autechre, Justin Broadrick and SunnO))). "Seattle band Earth have a had a less than luxurious career consisting of substance addictions, catastrophic live performances and angry record labels. Yet through the tumultuous haze they managed to release a number of highly regarded studio albums in the early to mid 90's. Often attributed to helping sculpt the ever so popular Doom/Drone/Stoner Metal genres, Earth's influence was far more wide-reaching as evidenced by this varied collection of remixes entitled
Legacy of Dissolution
-- a fitting title for a band who existence was corrosive from the start. Only lasting member Dylan Carlson helped compile the list of remixers, each of whom chose their favorite track from the Earth back catalog."

COPTIC LIGHT
Title:
Coptic Light
Label:
NO QUARTER
Format:
CD
Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
NOQ 008CD
"The debut full-length from Coptic Light (NYC) is a massive piece of music. Consisting of three epic, dark, and moody instrumentals -- these musicians have been around the block and their expertise shows. They've created a truly unique album with atmosphere (which can't be said for everything that comes out these days). Sure, some of the riffs could be considered 'mathy' but the songs don't stay in that territory long before stretching out into vast, expansive, visceral meditations."

Title:
Origins and Primitives Vol. 1 + 2
Label:
NO QUARTER
Format:
2CD
Price:
$15.00
Catalog #:
NOQ 009CD
"The Psychic Paramount apologize for any harm their debut album
Gamelan Into The Mink Supernatural
may have caused to your speakers. Undoubtedly the loudest album released in 2005,
Gamelan...
introduced the world to this mysterious three piece from New York City.
Origins and Primitives
is not the new studio album (expect that to arrive in spring '07) but rather documents the formation of the group's sound with a collection of home recordings that mines the collective unconscious. Far from the 'in the red' sound of
Gamelan
,
Origins and Primitives
explores the quieter side of The Psychic Paramount with pulsing guitar tones, looped feedback and mellow electroacoustic compositions. The set draws directly on the automatic method of composition to emphasize first impressions, all while hinting at the shape of monsters to come."

CIRCLE

Forest

NO QUARTER
Format:
CD
Price:
$13.50
Catalog #:
NOQ 010CD
"Formed in 1991, Circle is the most visible and prolific name in the Finnish rock underground. With
Forest
the band have touched on their most accessible sound yet with four lengthy, percussive heavy songs that navigate through dark Kraut-inspired rhythms, whispered vocals and hypnotic repetition."

CIRCLE
Title:
Earthworm
Label:
NO QUARTER
Format:
CD
Price:
$8.00
Catalog #:
NOQ 012CD
"Circle is a band whose sound is constantly evolving. That evolution continues with
Earthworm
, a four song EP released on the eve of their third US tour.
Earthworm
finds the band further integrating their love of late seventies/early eighties metal with the 'circular' Kraut-influenced psych that has become their trademark. The songs on
Earthworm
are heavy and dense with guitar riffs that shred, backed by the intense and hypnotic rhythm section of bassist Jussi Lehtisalo and drummer Tomi Leppanen. The band has invited Bruce Duff (singer of the legendary LA band Jesters of Destiny) to contribute vocals on three tracks."

ENDLESS BOOGIE
Title:
Focus Level
Label:
NO QUARTER
Format:
CD
Price:
$13.50
Catalog #:
NOQ 013CD
"Endless Boogie began with no delusions of grandeur. They started off as an 'old man's hobby' -- just dudes jamming on riffs, locking into grooves, finding that transcendental part of a song and stretching it into eternity. Then they were offered a show. They played more shows. They self-released two very limited 12"s and were called the best-kept secret in New York by
Paper
magazine. They toured with Dungen and Circle and were invited by Slint to play All Tomorrows Parties. Now they've made the best rock record to come out of New York City in years (maybe decades). No, that's not an exaggeration. What more needs to be said? There aren't many bands with a more appropriately descriptive name. Rather than try and explain it, we'd prefer you just buy the album. It's 79 minutes long. It's the perfect soundtrack to the hot summer nights. Hanging out in the basement. Smoking figs in the yard."

BURNING STAR CORE
Title:
Operator Dead... Post Abandoned
Label:
NO QUARTER
Format:
CD
Price:
$13.50
Catalog #:
NOQ 014CD
"Cincinnati native C. Spencer Yeh has been releasing records under the Burning Star Core moniker since 1993. A classically trained violinist, Yeh is the center of the amorphous free noise group whose past collaborators have included: Comets on Fire, Hototogisu, Chris Corsano and Thurston Moore.
Operator Dead...
finds BxC as an extremely loud four piece who waste no time and get right down to business creating massive, looping, head-splitting drones and titanic walls of sound. Calculated and controlled; the intensity builds and builds only to crash down into free-noise, psychedelic fury -- sounding something like the universe imploding in on itself, only captured inside a run-down Kentucky recording space."

CIRCLE
Title:
Katapult
Label:
NO QUARTER
Format:
CD
Price:
$15.00
Catalog #:
NOQ 015CD
"The members of Circle have been listening to a lot of '80s black metal lately (ie. Venom, Celtic Frost). As a result, the premier Kraut-influenced, psychedelic band have created their most dark and twisted record to date -- which, for those familiar with Circle, know is no small feat. Don't let the term 'black metal' scare you off --
Katapult
is here to blow your mind, and as with all things Circle, nothing is cut and dry. The constants of their sound remain -- hard repetition, heavy riffs, trance inducing rhythms -- aided, on this recording, by an ominous, spooky and, dare we say, straight up evil vibe. Beginning with a primitive, almost clumsy sound,
Katapult
is an album flush with dynamics and cold, chilly ambience. Bassist and founding member Jussi Lehtisalo handles the majority of vocal duties with a growl that could strike fear in the heart of the most jaded music fan. Subtle changes start to occur and before you realize it, the primitiveness is replaced by grander orchestration, '70s synthesizers and haunted choruses. You could very well be listening to the greatest, long lost dark psychedelia record, or maybe the soundtrack to some never-released drug-drenched horror film. Either way,
Katapult
begins in a dungeon and ends in the cosmos. Try not to lose your mind along the way."

CIRCLE
Title:
Sunrise
Label:
NO QUARTER
Format:
CD
Price:
$15.00
Catalog #:
NOQ 016CD
"Originally released in 2002,
Sunrise
is perhaps the ultimate psychedelic, Kraut-metal record. Don't bother asking yourself how many 'psychedelic, Kraut-metal' records actually exist, rather just enjoy the mind-melting riffs and trance-inducing rhythms nicely complimented by Mika Rättö's exotic, Rob Halford-ian vocals (sung in his native Finnish). Circle's songs are built around cold, hard, repetition and while
Sunrise
is an album as diverse as the group's influences, the recurring theme throughout remains their trademark 'circular' sound. Whether in the ferocious album-opener, 'Nopeuskunigas,' which bursts out of the gate at breakneck speed and only gains momentum as it progresses, or in the quarter-of-an-hour finale, 'Lokki,' a vast and expansive exercise in minimalism, Circle continue to find ways to expand their horizons. Previously available only as a Finnish import (out of print for a few years now),
Sunrise
is absolutely one of their finest moments."
