"Génia: Described by The Times as 'an outstanding musician,' and by Gramophone as a 'charismatic pianist,' Génia was born in the Ukraine where she studied with Regina Horowitz. She has relentlessly strove to push the boundaries of the established piano tradition by commissioning new music and collaborating with an eclectic range of artists. Equally at ease on the stage of the Wigmore Hall or Cargo nightclub, Génia has received critical acclaim for her live performances and contemporary classical releases for Black Box. In addition to her artistic career she has developed Piano-Yoga®, a unique method of piano playing and teaching. John Richards: Composer, experimental noise artist, and instrument maker. John Richards' broad talents and skills at manipulating all types of sound are brilliantly shown in his composition for Génia. John splits his time between performing and recording with Sand (electronic-meet-avant-punk band who have just released their third album on Soul Jazz), performing with kREEPA (his improvisation group which uses feedback loops mutated by his own home-made electronic circuits), lecturing in Leicester and composing. "Nonclassical is a unique, innovative label, releasing classical music in an unexpected and very refreshing way. A new generation of performers, composers and promoters are starting to emerge from the world of contemporary classical music who are keen to redefine the rules of classical music and are adamantly determined that classical music is no longer solely aired within the constraints of the concert hall. At the cusp of this new wave is The Elysian Quartet and composer Gabriel Prokofiev who, in 2004, founded the Nonclassical imprint; a label that challenges the very notion of what classical music is. The Elysian Quartet are swiftly establishing themselves as the UK's most innovative string quartet. They have recorded and toured with artists such as Killa Kela and Hot Chip as well as having been the backing band for former Can member, Damo Suzuki. They are, in short, the skilled improvisers and champions of new music. Their style and outlook fit perfectly with Prokofiev's compositions that, despite being for strings alone, draw influence from modern dancefloor music across the board. Ranging from the techno-indebted regulated patterns of the first movement to the spikey rock 'n' roll violin stabs of the last, this is classical music owing as much to Ligeti as it does to Chain Reaction. One passion of Prokofiev's is the remix, which he sees as a descendent of the old classical form, 'theme and variation.' On this CD, you will discover a wide range of contemporary talent from the world of dance music who have all embarked on their most challenging artistic adventure to date.
