Artist: MAKER
Title: Maker vs. Now-Again
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: NAML 004CD
"Chicago-area beatsmith Maker marks his Now-Again Records debut with Maker vs. Now-Again, an entry in the same 'music-library' series that saw the release of limited edition (and often not-for-sale) albums such Oh No vs. Now-Again and MRR-ADM's unnamed 'black-album.' Emerging from Chicago's underground hip-hop community of the late 90s, Maker's role as producer kept him behind the scenes, tweaking levels and digging in the crates. Maker vs. Now-Again is a hip-hop exercise in those boom-bap era aesthetics: dusty drum breaksunderscore two bar loops and make for an accessible series of tracks perfect for synchronization. It's no surprise, then, that Maker Vs. Now-Again has been featured in an Apple Ipad webisode and the Fox television show The Chicago Code."

Title: South Dallas Pop Festival - Live 1970
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: NA 5007CD
Reissued on a division of Stones Throw. "Dallas, Texas, produced some of the finest acts from funk music's golden age. Deep funk legends like Timothy McNeally, Tickled Pink and Soul Patrol all called Dallas home. Until recently, most of their music could only be found on super expensive original 45s or on dodgy bootlegs. Now, with compilations like The Funky 16 Corners and the new Texas Funk, these artists are seeing proper re-release for the first time. Over 70 minutes of professionally recorded, full restored, funky soul music played by some of the best bands in the deep funk business, live in 1970."

Title: Pose A Question
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: NA 5009CD
"A full length, unreleased album -- recorded and shelved over thirty years ago. To be released on Stones Throw's reissue subsidiary, Now-Again, L.A. Carnival's Pose A Question LP runs the gamut from superb, psychedelic soul to backbeat-grounded, heavy funk (by way of syncopation and horn arrangements that hint at Fela Kuti influenced Afro-Beat and a politically charged nature that heralds Sly and The Family Stone's groundbreaking early 70s albums). Perhaps the most fully realized unreleased funk album released to date, the Pose A Question anthology has been lovingly restored and mastered, packaged with a 20-page full color booklet, chock full of liner notes, period pictures of the band, and full annotation."

Artist: EBONY RHYTHM BAND
Title: Soul Heart Transplant: Lamp Sessions
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: NA 5011CD
"The final -- and most exciting -- installment in Now Again Records' LAMP reissue series -- a trawl through the funk catalog of Indianapolis's most prolific soul and funk label of the 60s and 70s. The music has been remastered from the analog master tapes and the band's history has been annotated and culled into extensive liner notes. 'Soul Heart Transplant', the title cut of the anthology, is fitting. The Band couldn't help but transplant their Meters-inspired, psychedelic grooves onto not only their original compositions but also onto any funky tunes from the day. As such, groups like The Doors, Blood Sweat and Tears and Cream all receive a heavy funk workout via the Ebony Rhythm Band. This CD runs the gamut from superb, psychedelic funk to backbeat-grounded, heavy funk."

Title: Midwest Funk: Funk 45s From Tornado Alley
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: NA 5012CD
2004 release. Domestic release, licensed from Jazzman. "Funk from the breadbasket: 23 rare and unreleased cuts. The definitive anthology of the Midwestern states' '60s and '70s funk scenes." ""Following the critically acclaimed Texas Funk album, Midwest Funk is an additional collection of rare, collectible and previously-unreleased funk 45s. This time collector Malcolm Catto and I drove 1000s of miles across the endless cornfields of the American Midwest, a vast expanse of farm land that covers the region between the Rockies in the West and the Appalachians in the East. Summer is typically stifling hot and winter extremely harsh -- Tornado Alley also runs through the entire region. We worked hard but were lucky too -- not only did we avoid the tornadoes, but we also found some incredibly rare 45s and some amazing unreleased master tapes. And we've presented the best of them here in this CD/double LP. It was great to be the first people to meet and hang out with the often-bootlegged Soul Toranodoes, guzzle whiskey in Henry Peters' basement, and chill out in one of Jessie Wallace's vintage white Cadillacs. We chatted about their wild gigs and gruelling recording sessions in the '60s & '70s, they gave us amazing photos, told us fascinating stories and shared priceless anecdotes filled with their inspirations and their failures. Their life story in music was often captured on one solitary, but brilliant, 45, and that musical story is told here." -- Dante Carfagna

Title: Texas Funk 1968-1975
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: NA 5019CD
"Another collection of lost funk treasures from UK-based Jazzman Records, and its fanatical honchos Gerald 'Jazzman' Short and Malcolm Catto. Texas Funk, now available domestically for the first time, is the definitive look into the funk hotbed that was the late '60s and early '70s Lone Star State. From tough, urban centers such as Dallas and Houston, to the sparsely- populated dots of Pasadena and Longview, one message rings clear -- this expanse offered up musical hopefuls who offered 'black gold' equal or better to their major label peers. Included within are some of the most sought-after deep funk tracks known in the collecting world. There are verifiable funk instrumentals, vocal masterpieces, heavy duty interpolations, and unique covers of classics by The Isley Brothers, James Brown and The Meters. Twenty-one gems in all. Expertly remastered, packaged with extensive liner notes, complete annotation, a historical overview of Texas and its funk meccas, an introduction by DJ Shadow and containing more photos and memorabilia in its 24- page booklet than even the most seasoned funk fiend would expect, Texas Funk is a sure shot."

Artist: KASHMERE STAGE BAND
Title: Texas Thunder Soul 1968-1974
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: 2CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: NA 5023CD
"The Kashmere High School Stage Band released a total of eight albums and three 45s on the Kram label under the direction of legendary Texas bandmaster Conrad O. Johnson between the years of 1968 and 1978. All are sought after by collectors and DJs not only because of their rarity, but for their top notch funk quality. This ever-changing crew of high schoolers recorded music that funked with the best of the best -- forget high school bands, we're talking about sixteen-year-old kids who would give the JBs a run for their money! Stones Throw and Now-Again Records resident archivist Egon first reissued the Kashmere Stage Band's namesake funk tune 'Kashmere' on his Funky 16 Corners compilation in 2001. Since then, he's included their music on various compilations, and even issued some vinyl-only re-releases of full length Kashmere albums. Now, Egon presents the definitive anthology of the Kashmere Stage Band as a deluxe 2CD release. Disc one includes remastered versions of both released and unreleased studio tracks. Disc two contains never-before-heard live performances and, as an enhanced CD, a mini-documentary that offers a glimpse into the reissue process that produced the anthology, shot by veteran photographer B+. The 40-page booklet contains extensive liner notes, interviews, archival photos, memorabilia and full annotation."

Title: Free Your Mind: The 700 West Sessions
Label: NOW-AGAIN

2007 release. "The most Funkadelic group you never heard...Harder than Earth, Wind & Fire. Kooler than Kool & The Gang. Unreleased funk & soul from Indianapolis's 3-part harmony masters, as heard on Cold Heat Vol.1." "This previously unreleased album further entrenches Amnesty's reputation as purveyors of the most unique funk to originate from Naptown. Arranged with dangerous complexity and performed with precision, Amnesty's 700 West Sessions represent a glimpse of a funk band recording at not only the peak of their musicianship, but at the height of the music's popularity." -- Egon

Title: Out There
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: NA 5031CD
2007 release. "Taking inspiration from the astral space explorations of out-jazz pioneer Sun Ra, the Heliocentrics dare to tread brazenly experimental territory, all while adding deft touches of jazz, funk, and hip-hop to the mix. The group's debut, Out There, is a heady mash-up of cinematic electronica, downtempo beats, and strident free jazz textures. But this is no mere jazz/noise free-for-all, as the Heliocentrics offer musicianship in spades, showcasing stop-on-a-dime changes and cohesive grooves aplenty. Out There is recommended for intrepid sonic explorers who enjoy a little freeform-freakout with their beats."

Artist: HECTOR & THE MALCOUNS, KARL
Title: Sahara Swing
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: NA 5035CD
"Now-Again Records follows up The Heliocentrics' percussive excursions into the astral realms of psychedelia with an album of Afro-tinged funk music originating from the Southern Sahara and recorded in Germany. Karl Hector has, to date, only appeared on one 7", from 1996, as the leader of the Funk Pilots. For this album, he has teamed up with Jay Whitefield (producer and guitarist for the Poets of Rhythm and the Whitefield Brothers, and founder of the now-defunct Hotpie & Candy Records) and Thomas Myland and Zdenko Curlija, founders of The Malcouns. Alongside Bo Baral, other members of the Poets of Rhythm and crack Munich-based session musicians, Whitefield, Myland and Curlija have crafted nearly twenty tracks that follow the musical roads that Hector has traveled. The underlying groove that ties these ideas together, of course, is as rooted in James Brown as it is Fela Kuti. As informed by Mulatu Astatke of Ethiopia as it is by Jean-Claude Vannier and Can. This is an album of the world. Not 'world music' -- but an album that will appeal to any culture ever transfixed by rhythm on 'the one.'"

Title: Carolina Funk: First In Funk 1968-1977
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: NA 5036CD
2008 release. "Now-Again Records presents the domestic issue of Carolina Funk, the fourth CD in the UK-based Jazzman Records series that produced the landmark Midwest, Texas, and most recently, Florida Funk compilations. For this installment, we've moved up the Atlantic coast to look at the vibrant and original scene in the two rural states of North and South Carolina. Curated largely by resident North Carolina researcher and collector Jason Perlmutter, Carolina Funk presents 22 of the best, rarest and most sought-after heavy funk songs ever recorded, with breakbeats to spare. Without any large urban centers, much of the musical output of the Carolinas has been limited to single towns, with bands and their records seldom venturing further than the state line. From inspired percussive instrumentals to heartfelt slabs of soul; from rediscovered tapes in the garages of retired musicians to funk 45s so raw that they were blessed by James Brown himself -- this is Carolina Funk!" Artists include The J.D.'s, Wally Coco, Anthony Burns, The Black Exotics, Donnie Brown, George Campbell, Mongoose, Soul Impossibles, Dynamite Singletary, Sundia, The Tempo's Band, Roy Roberts and more.

Artist: TRIORGANICO
Title: Convivência
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: NA 5037CD
"'Triorganico's debut... is something you'd expect to hear floating from a smoky Bossa Nova club in the 1950s -- not downtown LA. Triorganico finds comfort in history and hindsight.' -- Wax Poetics. A Southern Californian garage-band influenced by music of the Latin American diaspora? Forty years ago that might have described a psych outfit, or an ensemble that emulated Santana. In 2009 it describes a wondrous little combo who has returned to Latin jazz's raw, minimalist roots and have recorded an album drenched in history, yet defiantly modern: Convivencia. Triorganico -- Pablo Calogero on saxophones and woodwinds, Ricardo 'Tiki' Pasillas on percussion and Fabiano do Nascimento on guitar -- formed in Calogero's garage. 'We would simply get together to listen to music, write music, share ideas,' the Rio de Janeiro bred do Nascimento states. The band set up a weekly residency in Downtown LA, playing a variety of original compositions and cover songs from their favorite musicians. Songs by Brazilian legends featured prominently. The idea to record happened organically and using what the group describes as 'guerrilla tactics.' The result is a wholesome album that rambles purposefully through the wonders of Brazilian bossa nova influenced jazz and spreads into the musical melting pots at the center of its creator's multi-cultures."

Title: Spiritual Jazz
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: CD
Price: $13.50
Catalog #: NA 5042CD
Subtitled: Esoteric, Modal + Deep Jazz From The Underground 1968-77. "Now-Again Records, in conjunction with Jazzman Records, presents an expanded version of the compilation that introduced many listeners to the sound of the unsung musicians who, in the midst of the Vietnam War and the fallout of the Civil Rights struggle, created some of the most beautiful, spiritual and meditative music of the era. The music was at times funky, at times contemplative, but it always strived to say something about the world in which the musicians lived. Existing completely under the critical radar and largely ignored or unknown by music fans and critics alike, most of the musicians featured in this album won't be familiar to even the most seasoned aficionado. Their records, frequently turned down by distributors and record stores, saw little attention when first released -- and have seen even less since. But in this era of musical apathy, where so many music junkies look to the past for their musical fix, we have re-discovered hidden, obscure and esoteric jazz musicians who looked to the four corners of the earth, and beyond, for inspiration. With this anthology we evaluate 'Spiritual Jazz,' jazz created in the era after John Coltrane, a time which saw the evolution of an underground jazz that spoke about the reform of the soul, the reform of the spirit, and the reform of society: a music which was local and international at once, which was a personal journey and a political statement, and which was religious and secular in one non-contradictory breath. The music on this album reflects the social and historical forces at work during the closedown of the 60s dream; music made by close-knit collectives and individual visionaries, by prisoners and eccentrics, by mystics and political radicals. It includes music by acknowledged masters, and moments of brilliance by unsung figures known to us from just one or two recordings. There are songs from prison bands, Egyptian big bands, high school jazz ensembles, African musicians gigging with free jazz legends, and African American jazz heroes. Spiritual Jazz: Esoteric, Modal And Deep Jazz From The Undergound, 1968-77 is the jazz music of America in the age of civil rights, brutal repression, political assassination and war; a music that would guarantee the survival of the spiritual dimension in a society that was angry and traumatized, but nevertheless had seen hope of better days to come."

Title: Away With Melancholy
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: NA 5043CD
"It didn't take much: Gerald 'Jazzman' Short signed a mysterious UK-based duo based on their brooding, beat-heavy, difficult-to-categorize demo, conveyed his signings love of Galt MacDermot, David Axelrod and Ennio Morricone's 60s and 70s masterpieces to Now-Again's Egon, and the duo hatched a plan for an expanded North American issue of what had already been hailed as a fine release in keeping with the best 'library music' issues of the same era. By 'library music,' we're referring, of course, to the production library albums from cult labels like KPM, Dewolfe, Southern, Peer and other imprints whose sole purpose seemed to be supplying talented musicians with a blank disc which they could then inscribe with sounds of their liking. It's taken well over a year, in which time the NYB's album has gone out of print as Jazzman's limited run was never repressed. This version comes expanded with three bonus tracks never before issued and comes packaged in a gatefold, thick cardboard 'paste-on' silver foil jacket. This North American version is also limited to 1,000 pieces - once they're gone, they're gone."

Title: Winter Winds (The Complete Works: 1968-70)
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: 3CD BOX
Price: $32.00
Catalog #: NA 5044CD
"P.E. Hewitt was but 16 years old when he recorded and released -- in a press of 50 copies -- his debut album, Jawbones. By the time he sold through the 100 copies of this third, Winter Winds, he was approaching the ripe-age of 20. The three albums he and his young compatriots wrote, recorded, pressed and -- if you can call it that -- distributed, are three of the rarest damn-good '70s jazz albums you could ever hope to come across. That's a subtle, but important distinction. There are many rare jazz albums in every imaginable subgenre -- funk, free, fusion... But Hewitt's three albums were so damn good that neither micro presses nor forty years of silence could suppress their reemergence. We at Now-Again decided against compiling a 'best of' anthology out of respect for Hewitt's monstrous achievements and because, well, these albums are so damn good. Thus, we offer you a three album box set -- we've directly recreated the albums as they were issued, down to their hand-painted covers. Also included is a 44-page booklet which includes the original liner notes from the albums, an essay on Hewitt and his career, a thorough interview with Hewitt by Egon and Groove Merchant 'Cool' Chris Veltri, and never before seen photos."

Title: Forge Your Own Chains
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: NA 5046CD
Subtitled: Heavy Psychedelic Ballads And Dirges 1968-1974. "This compilation introduces a new direction for Now-Again Records and its owner, Stones Throw Records GM, A&R and producer Egon. With the same detailed, no-stone-unturned approach he used for Deep Funk (The Funky 16 Corners, Cold Heat), he tackles beat-heavy global psychedelia with Forge Your Own Chains. 'Those of us birthed into record collecting by the Hip Hop midwife revered Jimi Hendrix as well as James Brown. We searched for albums by Mulatu Astatke and Power of Zeus with the same fervor,' Egon writes in his introduction to the comp. Forge Your Own Chains showcases music from all corners of the world: Colombia, Nigeria, Sweden, South Korea, Thailand and Iran. The focus -- in keeping with Now-Again's tradition -- is on melody, driving rhythms and accessibility. Not one song is included on this compilation because it is from a 'rare' album. Certainly, many of these songs do spring from albums that exchange hands for many thousands of dollars and many of these songs have never seen reissue. But these songs are all beautiful in their own right and work to form a coherent album. Psychedelic records, long the mainstay of older, grizzled collectors and seemingly quaint, are, in the hands of Egon and those of his generation, giving up new ghosts. And, with comps like Forge Your Own Chains, inspiring new investigations into our not so distant (and still very much alive) musical past." Artists: Top Drawer, Sensational Saints, East Of Underground, D. R. Hooker, Shin Jung Hyun & The Men feat. Jang Hyun, T. Zchiew & The Johnny, The Strangers, Damon, Ellison, Morly Grey, Shadrack Chameleon, Ofege, Ana Y Jaime, Kourosh Yaghmaei, Baby Grandmothers. Title: Earthology
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: NA 5047CD
"Earthology is the long awaited follow up to The Whitefield Brothers cult-classic In The Raw. While In The Raw's hypnotic, defiantly psychedelic funk music was grounded in the great musical traditions of both America and Africa, Earthology finds the Brothers infusing their funk (or, as the Brothers prefer it, 'raw soul') with musical traditions that span the globe. To achieve the Earthology's unique sound, the Brothers employed an array of instruments and put in a dizzying amount of research: traveling the world, joining different bands and ethnic performing ensembles, amassing and absorbing field recordings, trawling used record bins for lost examples of global psychedelic-fusion, over a period spanning some fifteen years. Like In The Raw, Earthology is grounded by a 'raw soul' band's building blocks: drums, guitar, bass, keys and horns, but it is augmented by such exotic instruments as gongs and flutes from Asia, xylophones and string instruments from Africa and Central American percussion instruments. The use of African polyrhythms now seems commonplace on a funk or psych album; Arabic rhythmical structures, African pentatonic scales and Oriental modes do not. The Whitefield Brothers, and a multitude of guest ranging from vocalists Edan, Mr. Lif, Bajka, Percee P and MED to musicians from Antibalas, El Michels Affair, Quantic and the Dap-Kings, set these elements in a modern context and, over the course of thirteen dense tracks, blend them with the fierce funk their fans have grown to love."

Title: Black Man's Cry: The Inspiration Of Fela Kuti
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: NA 5056CD
"Covers & music inspired by the Godfather of Afro-beat. Includes rare & previously unreleased music from Nigeria, Ghana, Colombia, Trinidad and more. He's best known by his first name: Fela. He's certainly Nigeria's most famous musical export. His name itself conjures images of 70s Lagos. A metropolis awash in the jubilation that swept in after the 1970 armistice in the civil war between the Nigerian Army and Eastern Biafran secessionists. A capital city in the midst of transition. This is the environment in which Fela and his Africa 70 popularized the hybrid of highlife, jazz and James Brown style, big-band funk he invented: Afro-Beat. In Nigeria, his countrymen knew his music like Americans know Elvis. On foreign shores, a chosen few Westerners could claim to know the extent of Fela's genius. As a result, while music historians have filled books with references to the influence of Westerners on Fela's creation, little has been said about Fela's inspiration on others. Thus, our compilation begins. Fela's music, and that of his organization inspired musicians across the global village when Afro-Beat was new and novel. This compilation focuses on the music Fela inspired -- whether by fellow Nigerians recording alongside him in the early 70s, neighbors in Ghana, then-modern Colombian cumbia ensembles inspired by the man who injected a new feel into the Yoruban rhythms that formed cumbia's base, Trinidadian steel bands or the select few organizations left that have maintained Fela's fury in the new millennium. This is but a cursory investigation into those inspired by Fela Kuti's genius, but it is unique: the first time that many of these tracks are not only offered a second chance for worthy introspection, but, in the case of many, the first time they're being issued full stop." Hardback package with 20-page booklet. Both rare '70s recordings and contemporary artists, including: Cumbia Moderna De Soledad, Dan Satch And His Atomic 8 Dance Band, 6th Infantry Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Bola Johnson, Segun Bucknor, Jerry Hansen, Lisandro Meza, Lever Brothers Gay Flamingoes, Mosco Tiles Fonclaire Steel Orchestra, Sylvania East Side Symphony, Phirpo Y Sus Caribes, Daktaris, Karl Hector and The Malcouns, and Whitefield Brothers.

"It's been a startling couple of years for instrumental beats of all persuasions: the likes of LA's Brainfeeder crew and Glasgow's LuckyMe collective have developed styles with a scope far beyond creating merely 'instrumental hip hop'. Amongst all the hype and promotion, one of the music's reclusive architects seems to have been mysteriously overlooked. But Dimlite's production was astounding from the start. His EPs of 2003 and debut album Runbox Weathers two years later revealed a Swiss producer beholden to no one, possessing a style as nuanced as his friend Prefuse 73 and yet enriched by a careworn romanticism and quirkiness that rewarded repeat listens and has, over time, made him something of a 'producer's producer'. Another album, singles, remixes and side-projects followed, taking Dimlite's sound further left, further into a singular world where soul music, Latin rhythms, hip hop and more are reconstituted into dreamy, lovelorn beat constructions. And so he takes his place on Now-Again, home to a cadre of similarly singular spirits such as The Heliocentrics and The Whitefield Brothers, each bent on refracting music history through their own unique lenses. And while copycat producers abound, Dimlite's uniqueness is only throw into sharper relief. It's clear the moment he sings, such as on EP highlight 'Elbow Flood' or the astonishing (and miniature) closer, 'Can't Get Used To Those.' It's apparent in every one of his strangely abrupt changes. It's even in his song titles. Perhaps Prismic Tops will be the record that sparks a critical reappraisal of this gifted producer's work. And if not, Now-Again Records is still proud to present this, the latest in a line of remarkable releases from a quiet pioneer."

"An inventive showcase of what's possible when armed with just a sampler, a few studio toys and a fertile imagination, Paul White And The Purple Brain is the intriguing sophomore album from South London producer Paul White. A collaboration of sorts, the entire record is based around and inspired by the work of little-known Swedish psych-rock guru ST Mikael. Heavy on Eastern influences and otherworldly concerns, Mikael's music ranges from searing electric guitar-led dirges to dreamlike ballads to ghostly atmospheric experiments and has been issued in tiny quantities since the 1990s on the Subliminal Sounds label. Paul White And The Purple Brain is a remarkably diverse album that defies easy categorization. Which suits him and his 'home' label One-Handed Music (in collaboration with whom Now-Again releases this album) just fine. Praised as someone who 'embodies all that is good about a new generation of producers' by Dazed & Confused magazine, Paul White has won over fans of left-leaning sounds and interesting hip hop, including Diplo, Mary Anne Hobbs, Benji B and Gilles Peterson."

"The stories of great high school funk bands are, thanks to an abundance of reissues, commonplace. The tales of great high school soul-bands are still rare. A ballad or two on the random Douglass High School Stage Band album or Timeless Legend's mesmerizing entry on Columbus's 1972 1st Annual Inner City Talent Expo notwithstanding, high school bands rarely struck into the realm of 'grown folks' music. Enter The Equatics and their brooding masterpiece Doin' It!!!! If this is categorized as a 'funk' album -- and it was for the last ten years, by those few lucky enough to own an original copy -- it holds its own. But it was as a soul band, one as inspired by the melancholic musings of Bill Withers as the psychedelic-pop of the self-proclaimed 'Black Moses,' Issac Hayes -- that the Equatics shone. These young souls offered world-weary, beat-heavy ballads that stand on par with any of the great independent organizations of the early 1970s. That a group of teenagers could offer such an angst-ridden plea as that of Leo Davis's 'Merry Go Round' not only transcends the limitations that came from the band's average age (seventeen, at the time of the album's recording), but also the barriers the stood in front of this group of small-city hopefuls. This official reissue was licensed by the Equatics' bandleader, bass player Benjamin Crawford. Packaged as a 'mini-LP' in a thick, 'paste-on' cardboard sleeve that mimics the original album jacket, Now-Again's reissue of Doin' It!!!! also comes with an eight page booklet with full liner notes, annotation, and never-before-seen photos of this most impressive organization."

Title: California Funk: Rare Funk 45s From The Golden State
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: NA 5063CD
"The Jazzman/Now-Again Funk series has offered surveys as broad as they are deep: Midwest Funk, Texas Funk, Florida Funk, Carolina Funk. Yet this might be the most important trawl of all: California Funk. Over a decade in the making, this, from compilers Malcolm Catto and Gerald 'Jazzman' Short, is the funk masterpiece. This anthology examines what happened to the independent ensembles who gigged during Sly and the Family Stone's Bay-area renaissance. It delves into the storied sidemen who worked alongside LA's Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Bands and offers answers to elusive questions. At the same time, it offers thunderous drums, fuzzy wah-wah, fat basslines, blistering horns and exhortations akin to James Brown and his many disciples over its 21 track selection. This official reissue was licensed by the lost band leaders, bass players, drummers, label owners and studio vets, independents, all lost to history no more. Packaged as a 'mini-LP' in a thick, paste-on gatefold cardboard sleeve Now-Again's issue of California Funk also comes with a 24-page full color booklet with full liner notes, annotation, and never-before-seen photos of these most impressive organizations." 2LP version available on Jazzman (JMAN 033LP).

Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: CD

Subtitled: Indonesian Hard, Psychedelic, Progressive Rock and Funk: 1970-1978. "
The untold story of Indonesia's various underground 70s musical scenes; extensive liner notes, photographs and ephemera; fully restored and remastered audio; officially licensed.
The progressive music scenes in 1970s Indonesia were largely underground as a result of strict censorship imposed by the dictator Suharto. Those who performed music marked by relentless fuzz, over the top, politically charged lyrics, strong rhythms and a cranky low-fidelity were truly rebellious. And the resulting output has been largely -- outside of the confines of this island nation -- unheard or ignored. Indonesia, based in large part on the restrictions imposed by Suharto, is better known for the coffee it exports than the music it creates. This situation hasn't been remedied by the rough-hewn Indonesian bootlegs that dotted the psychedelic landscape over the past five years. Thanks now to the tireless -- and expensive -- research of Canadian hip hop producer and Southeast Asian music specialist Jason 'Moss' Connoy - and the trust that Indonesian rock legend Benny Soebardja placed in Now-Again Records as he traversed his homeland's islands securing the rights necessary for us to offer you this anthology -- we feel like we can, in good spirits and conscience, shine the light on some of the most impressive organizations to offer their take on the psychedelic and progressive rock and funk sounds during the early shocking, shaking days of Suharto's regime." Artists: Panbers, The Brims, Rollies, Shark Move, Golden Wing, AKA, IVO's Group, Ariesta Birawa Group, Terenchem, Benny Soebardja and Lizard, Super Kid, Koes Plus, The Gang Of Harry Roesli, Black Brothers, Rasela, Freedom Of Rhapsodia, Rhythm Kings, Duo Kribo. Housed in a mini-LP tip on sleeve, alongside a 64-page full-color booklet.
"It's a great one! Hats off to the label for digging deep and coming up with this one."-- Henry Rollins

Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: 2CD

Catalog #: NA 5066CD
Subtitled: Pre-Revolution Psychedelic Rock From Iran: 1973-1979. "Now-Again Records is proud to present Back from the Brink, the only legitimately licensed collection of the godfather of Iranian psychedelic rock, Kourosh Yaghmaei. Known within the Iranian diaspora simply by his first name, Kourosh's recordings were thought lost after Islamic fundamentalists took control of Iran. They weren't: Kourosh had protected them -- along with key ephemera from the '70s. Their collection here bolstered by Kourosh's first person recollections of Iran's '70s rock scene and its death after the Revolution, tells the story of an immensely talented artist's desire to persevere in the face of terrible adversity. Kourosh Yaghmaei and his brothers Kamran and Kambiz were amongst the few inspired Iranian musicians determined to change Tehran's musical landscape in the late '60s and early '70s. The trio, armed with rented, second-hand instruments and records by The Ventures, The Kinks, The Doors, merged Western garage rock, psychedelia and Iranian folkloric music to create a sound unlike anything that came before them. Later, inspired by the unlikely duo of Elton John and James Taylor, Kourosh's music took a sophisticated turn, and he churned out funky, progressive rock that is as imminently enjoyable as it is impossible to categorize. His star on the rise was knocked off course by the Revolution, and its backdrop of Islamic fundamentalists burning record companies and harassing musicians. But while most Pre-Revolution musicians -- including his brothers -- fled Iran in 1979, Kourosh stayed, loyal to the country of his birth. He has suffered a performance and recording ban for twenty-two out of the last thirty-two years. Yet he remains stoic and resolved to continue bolstering Iranian musical tradition. Kourosh still lives in Tehran and is pleased that his story -- and his glorious 70s recordings -- will finally spread the world over. This essential piece of Iran's musical history is also accompanied by a full color, 52 page hardbound book and contains never-before-seen photos and ephemera."

Title: Dark Sunrise
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: 2CD
Price: $21.00
Catalog #: NA 5067CD
"Now Again Records is proud to present an album entitled Dark Sunrise, an anthology of Zambian 'Zam-Rock' godfather Rikki Ililonga and his groundbreaking band Musi-O-Tunya. The anthology surveys Musi-O-Tunya's rarely heard 7" singles -- not just the first psychedelic rock music, but the first pop music independently released in Zambia -- their debut album Wings of Africa and follows Ililonga's solo career in its first stages, with his Zambia and Sunshine Love albums. While global psychedelic rock and funk enthusiasts have recently been introduced to Zam-Rock via Now Again and Shaddock's re-issues of the likes of Witch and Amanaz's early albums, Dark Sunrise stands as the definitive document that, both musically and in prose, shines light on this African musical hotbed. Dark Sunrise contains 32 tracks that can be distilled to simple descriptions driving music characterized by James Brown's raw funk, combined with the fuzz guitar sounds of Jimi Hendrix and the polyrhythms native to this African nation. But this neglects to mention Musi-O-Tunya and Ililonga's otherworldliness. Sure, the majority of their work is performed in English, but this is unique psychedelic rock/blues/rumba/folk/funk music, the likes of which has rarely been heard outside of Zambia's borders. This gem is packaged as a 2xCD hardbound book. Included is a stunning full color booklet with never-before-seen photos, ephemera, an introduction to the Zam-Rock scene and a candid interview between Egon and this little known yet genius African multi-instrumentalist himself."

Format: CD

Catalog #: NA 5068CD
"Listening to this remarkable album for the first time you'll surely be struck first by the deep, soul-piercing voice of that great Brazilian singer, Seu Jorge. Yes: he's a singer first and foremost. Many may know him as an actor for his screen-stealing performances in the likes of Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic and Fernando Meirelles' City Of God but Seu has known since he was a child that we was destined to sing. He's a Brazilian singer who speaks the truth through samba, to paraphrase a well-known Seu Jorge quote. But this project is about a band: Almaz. Drummer Pupillo and guitarist Lucio Maia from the stalwart Nação Zumbi; bassist and composer Antonio Pinto from the soundstages of movies starring Seu Jorge. They came together naturally to record a song for a Walter Salles film; they enjoyed the experience so much that they recorded an entire album of music that inspired them. Songs famous within the Brazilian diaspora (Tim Maia, Jorge Ben) mesh with classic American (Roy Ayers, Michael Jackson) and European (Kraftwerk, Cane and Abel) soul songs begging for a bit of psychedelic samba. They enlisted producer and fellow Brazileiro Mario C. (Beastie Boys, Jack Johnson) to put the finishing touches on the project. Their album is both warm and dark; psychedelic and yet grounded, uplifting but at times somber. To listen to it is to join them in the studio, where the only bandleader is the music and the only agenda is to follow your heart."

Title: Where Are You From?
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: NA 5073CD
"This anthology took root in a most unusual meeting of the minds: Christophe Lemaire, then creative director at French sportswear giant Lacoste, contacted Eothen 'Egon' Alapatt, then general manager at L.A. indie Stones Throw Records, to inquire as to a collaboration between his eponymous clothing line and two of Stones Throw's most well known talents -- Madlib and J.Dilla. A collaboration did follow, and a friendship between the two was born -- one stemming from a mutual respect for each other's craft, and a conjoined goal to celebrate the classic while pushing forward into the future. This anthology took form after one of many meetings at Lemaire's boutique in the Marais district in Paris. The designer wondered if some of Egon's Now-Again titles would be available for purchase, for sale in his shop? Egon -- aware of Lemaire's deep knowledge of the past forty-some-odd years of musical innovation and impeccable taste -- proposed something more fitting: another collaboration, whereby Lemaire would pick songs from Now-Again's vast catalog, which they could present as something unique, something new, as Lemaire puts it in his liner notes to this anthology -- 'a psychedelic journey of delicate perception.' While the worlds of fashion and music often meet, the missions of Christophe Lemaire and Now-Again - to break down the barriers that exist between genres; to entice those who might be interested not by force, but by subtle suggestion -- mirror each other almost directly. And now: Where Are You From? sixteen tracks of global psychedelic rock, funk and folk grooves from 1968 until the present day,' as procured by Now-Again, selected and annotated by Lemaire, and handsomely packaged for your enjoyment. Contains exclusive tracks not available elsewhere on CD." "If Dimlite's Prismic Tops EP served as a stunning reintroduction to one of electronic music's most underrated talents, then My Human Wears Acedia Shreds is a warning to listeners and peers alike: keep up or be left behind. This quartet of songs finds the Swiss producer creating wide-eyed and progressive music that synthesizes free jazz, prog- and Krautrock, and much more. There is no one else quite on his level, no one who inhabits a world so complete and unique. While he built his reputation with a string of pioneering releases on Germany's Sonar Kollectiv label that took hip-hop as their starting point, these days Dimlite is more Soft Machine than drum machine, a kindred spirit of purveyors of avant-pop such as Panda Bear, and the playful prog giants of the past. This quartet of songs contains a richness that makes these his most satisfying compositions yet. Just check 'Metal Snake Rider', an expansive opus packed into just over three minutes of non-stop invention."

Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: LP
Price: $21.00
Catalog #: NA 5076LP
"For all intents and purposes, Karl Hector might as well be another nom-de-plume of Jay Whitefield (producer and guitarist for the Poets of Rhythm and the Whitefield Brothers) who, along with Thomas Myland and Zdenko Curlija, founded Karl Hector and The Malcouns in the early 2000s. Alongside Bo Baral, other members of the Poets of Rhythm and crack Munich-based session musicians, Whitefield, Myland and Curlija crafted nearly twenty tracks for their debut, Sahara Swing, an album that swung with influences from across the African diaspora. The trio will now release a series of vinyl-only EPs -- of which Tamanrasset is the first -- that will culminate in their second album. Tamanrasset 's five songs demonstrate The Malcouns' deft handling of musics from Eastern and Northern Africa alongside Western psychedelia, jazz and funk; the song 'Girma's Lament' - its title an homage to the great Ethiopian pianist, arranger and vocalist Girma Beyene - is a great representation." Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: 12"
Price: $8.00

"Now-Again announces the second single from Brazilian singer/actor Seu Jorge's Seu Jorge and Almaz album, a sultry take on Kraftwerk's 'The Model.' The record is mixed by Mario C and includes instrumentals and remixes of 'The Model' and 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine', all of which are exclusive to this 12". This dark, soulful approach to what was once a robotic ode to a runway idol intoxicates not only because of Jorge's gruff baritone, but because of his backing band Almaz -- drummer Pupillo and guitarist Lucio Maia from the stalwart Nação Zumbi; bassist and composer Antonio Pinto from the soundstages of movies like the Jorge vehicle City of God. The band came together naturally to record a song for a Walter Salles film; they enjoyed the experience so much that they recorded an entire album, free of convention, of music that inspired them."

Catalog #: NA 5079CD
"Now-Again Records, in association with label-owner Lee Anthony, is proud to present the release of True Soul: Deep Sounds from the Left of Stax, a collection of rare and unreleased funk and soul music from the fabled Arkansas indie. Over twelve years in the making, this anthology -- presented over the course of two volumes of CD/DVDs and one four-LP box set -- seeks to establish True Soul's rightful place within America's funk and soul pantheon. As much as this CD/DVD set is about the adventurous, always-funky and oh-so-rare recordings that True Soul made possible, it is also about Anthony, the man. A true, American 'up-from-the-bootstraps' story, Anthony's is one in which his frontiersman's entrepreneurial spirit and vision remains undeterred as he sets up black-owned businesses in a post-Jim Crow South and succeeds in capturing recordings from the high water mark of America's funk and soul movement. Anthony's story intertwines with the renowned Sam Philips -- an early mentor and patron -- and Memphis's Al Bell and Willie Mitchell -- with whom Anthony collaborated as he tried to cultivate Little Rock's funk and soul in the shadow of Stax and Hi Records. This anthology will make influence amongst the history of southern funk and soul is transparent, as his story of how he helped turn a stranded road band into the Gap Band. This comprehensive True Soul Records Anthology --presented in a 56-page, full color hardbound book chock full of photos, ephemera and extensive liner notes - not only carries the rare distributed funk and soul 45s that led the likes of renowned collectors DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist to Lee Anthony's door in search of Anthony's fabled 'treasure chest,' but also includes previously unreleased boogie, disco and party rap recorded in True Soul's early-80s twilight. Accompanying legendary cuts such as 'Slipping Around' and 'Doing my Own Thing' is a DVD containing excerpts from The True Soul Revue television program, that captured live performances from the True Soul All Stars in 1973."

But while most Pre-Revolution musicians -- including his brothers -- fled Iran in 1979, Kourosh stayed, loyal to the country of his birth. He has suffered a performance and recording ban for twenty-two out of the last thirty-two years. Yet he remains stoic and resolved to continue bolstering Iranian musical tradition."

"United States Army soldiers made the music contained in this three album box-set during the politically turbulent early '70s, towards the end of the Vietnam War. East of Underground, the Black Seeds and the Sound Trek were bands comprised of soldiers stationed in bases across Western Germany. While little is known about the bands, the players, and the milieu they came from - other than what can be pieced together from a handful of photos and documents found in a box in the New York Public Library, and the vague recollections of some of those involved - we at Now-Again Records have worked diligently with the United States Army and researchers the country over to present this important document - and some damn good soul and funk music. Only one former band member has come forward during the assembly of this anthology, which has lead us to question: where did these talented performers land after their winning performances in Army-sponsored Battle of the Bands contests afforded them (musical) tours across European Army bases? Perhaps some are still around somewhere: perhaps some are still involved in music; perhaps some were killed in action; perhaps some passed on after returning to the States. We've assembled vestiges - a show band contest entry form, a list of names, a couple of photographs, a playlist - to embellish this sonic time capsule, a capsule that functions as a snapshot of American culture during this politically charged era. Each of the two double-billed albums contained in this box-set is presented as an exact reproduction of the original United States Army issue. The extensive, full-color booklet features essays, annotation and a collection of Army ephemera from the creation of these albums. Also included is a full-color, exact reproduction of East Of Underground's 1971 tour poster."

Artist: KASHMERE STAGE BAND
Title: Texas Thunder Soul 1968-1974
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: 2CD/DVD
Price: $21.00
Catalog #: NA 5085CD
"Now-Again Records announces an expanded deluxe edition of its Texas Thunder Soul 1968-1974 anthology, to be released in conjunction with the Jamie Foxx-produced, award-winning documentary Thunder Soul: The True Story of Conrad Johnson and the Kashmere Stage Band. After capturing audience awards festivals like SXSW and the Los Angeles Film Festival, the word is out that Kashmere was the greatest high school band - ever. Their story is tucked in between slabs of hard '70s funk, soul, and jazz: Conrad Johnson transformed a bunch of rough-hewn high schoolers into a band that could compete with any in the nation - professional, or otherwise. Forget high school bands, we're talking about sixteen year old kids who would give the JBs a run for their money! The Kashmere Stage Band released a total of eight albums and three 45s on Johnson's Kram label. The band's best tracks are collected here - in an anthology now expanded into a 2CD/DVD deluxe edition. Producer Eothen 'Egon' Alapatt features an expanded booklet with updated liner notes and essays, more rare photos and ephemera, and a DVD which contains the B+/Flying Lotus produced Texas Jewels: The Making Of Texas Thunder Soul short, a recently unearthed 1973 documentary on the band, and a 1972 performance."

Title: Grimm Reality
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: NA 5086CD
"Dimlite's two EPs for Now-Again, Prismic Tops (2009) and My Human Wears Acedia Shreds (2010), captured an artist in flux: a producer fleeing from his loosely hip-hop, jazz and electronica-infused early material and towards a more realized world of sound. With Grimm Reality, Dimlite incorporates the techniques and artistic attitude of two of his alter-egos (Misel Quitno, a fanatic in low-fidelity electro-acoustic composition; the Slapped Eyeballers, a two-headed, world-rock-folk combo) to color a progressive sonic vision. Titling his third album Grimm Reality might seem to point to a new autobiographical streak in this Swiss producer/electronic musician, but that would be too simple. It's up to the listener to piece together a version of Grimm's Reality from mere hints: the wistful romance of 'XY,' the tension and release of 'New, Better Pain' and so on through every perfectly poised moment on this record. Likewise, looking for the remains of a hip-hop influence, or a connection to what's happening on modern-day dance floors, won't yield much here. The precedents that spring to mind are all cherished outsiders -- Neu, The Residents, Beefheart, Philip Glass -- footnotes in mainstream music history but, in an altogether preferable parallel universe, titans of the recent past."

Title: Obsession
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: CD
Price: $21.00
Catalog #: NA 5087CD
"The collected recordings of India's best-known psychedelic rock ensemble, and the story behind their genesis, which lasted from 1973-1977. The Atomic Forest stand as the only Indian psychedelic/hard rock band that managed to record an album: Obsession '77. The album's mix of blistering, fuzzy rock and synth-lead funk inspired collectors the world over to fork over thousands of dollars for original copies of this -- until recently -- unknown platter. Part of the interest certainly stemmed from its liberal doses of searing fuzz guitar; part of it sprung from the oddity of it all: India, a country that had, quite literally, churned out tens of thousands of albums during psych- and hard-rock's heyday, only produced this one, lonely psychedelic album; part of it sprung from the album's rarity. Unknown for years, Obsession '77 suddenly became a top want on every global-rock collector's short-list. Over the past four years, we at Now-Again Records have followed Atomic Forest's sounds -- and we've struck paydirt. Now, with the full participation of founding member/vocalist Madhukar Chandra Dhas and lead-guitarist Abraham Mammen, we present Obsession. This anthology collects songs from Obsession '77, the band's follow up Hit Film Themes and unreleased studio and live recordings from Atomic Forest band members. Dhas' extensive archives of photos and ephemera add weight to this anthology -- the first thorough investigation into India's '70s psychedelic rock scene. A scene that, until now, has been shrouded in secrecy and rumor -- clouded in a druggy haze. Atomic Forest's story stands in for the untold stories of many of India's underground bands - bands remembered vividly by those who witnessed their performances; bands that often homemade, cassette recordings -- that have been lost to time. We're glad that we discovered Atomic Forest; though their extant recordings are few, those recordings they etched to vinyl captured a powerful energy. That energy sparked our interest and fuels the fires of our imagination." 44-page booklet of photos, liner notes, etc.

Artist: NEW WORLD GENERATION
Title: New World Generation
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: 2CD

Catalog #: NA 5089CD
"We're well aware of soul's transitional period of the mid to late '70s; we've studied the era during which funk ensembles transformed into disco bands or, worse yet, disbanded when disco DJs supplanted them in the nightclubs that paid for their daily bread. That said, we generally shy away from the soul music -- now referred to as 'boogie' but, in the past, referred to as 'modern soul' -- that became popular in the wake of this change. Unless, that is, the music is superb and makes us pause. That's how we ended up with New World Generation. Phil Morrison, bassist for avant-garde, Boston-based jazzers Stark Reality, sent us a copy of New World Generation's solitary recorded document: a five song EP that the band, under Morrison's guidance, privately released in 1982. We heard echoes of the Roy Ayers produced RAMP sessions and the precise yet sensual vibes of the foundation known as Earth, Wind and Fire. We were intrigued. So we put in a call to New World Generation's bandleader, Lekan Parsons and found that he had recorded more music in the years leading up to the New World Generation EP. But he'd recorded with different ensembles. He promised to dig out his masters and send them to us for our consideration. It took years for him to collate the various components of the first phase of his recording career, which stretched from New York to Boston over the course of a decade. When he did send the music, we were thrilled. The songs he'd recorded with the Universal Rhythms and Orison ensembles were harbingers of the sophisticated soul he'd proffer with New World Generation. They were winsome, hopeful songs -- and their existence offered us the chance to present an album. This album's title - also New World Generation - references the faith that carried Parsons through the difficult and demoralizing times accomplished musicians like he and his friends experienced in a post-disco world, as big bands like his were left on the side of the trail to desiccate and die. Presented now, for the first, time, as a double CD with bonus tracks, we're thankful that Lekan held on, so that we can present his vision for a New World now. 28-page booklet with rare photos, ephemera and extensive liner notes."

Title: The Gift
Label: NOW-AGAIN
Format: 7"
Price: $8.00
Catalog #: NA 7023EP
"This 7" single contains 'Oh No's Ethiopium Remix' of 'The Gift', the lead off single from The Whitefield Brother's Earthology. The track finds rappers Edan and Mr. Lif riding the producer's stilted sampling of some dirty Ethiopian 70s funk. The influence of Oh No's Ethiopian-based album Dr. No's Ethiopium is clear and this limited release adds another entry in the long line of duets between these Boston reared MCs. The B-side features the instrumental of the remix."
