Title: Boddie Acetate Box
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: 3x7" BOX
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: ES 001BOX
"Three 45's with original Boddie acetate artwork plus extensive notes, housed in a 7" shipping box, and sealed with faximile Boddie paper shipping tape. From 1965 until 1987, husband and wife Thomas and Louise Boddie provided the greater Cleveland, Ohio, area with custom recording and affordable record manufacturing. The Boddie Recording Company operated out of the African-American couple's house on the east side of Cleveland, complete with a fullservice, hand-wired analog recording studio and a busy pressing plant steaming around the clock in a converted dairy barn at the back of the estate. A kaleidoscope of northern Ohio musical acts used the Boddie services in one way or another, booking time in the tracking room, cutting reference acetates, or pressing a couple hundred 45s for local distribution. Selecting from the reliable parade of musicians crossing paths with his enterprise, Thomas found time to curate his own stable of talent through his Soul Kitchen, Luau, Caribi, Plaid, and Bounty labels. But by and large, Boddie Recording Company was not a creative endeavor for Thomas or Louise. Instead, it made the Boddies an honest living by providing teenage bands and aspiring gospel ensembles an inexpensive shot at having their own creations laid to wax. Of these hundreds of groups, we've selected three that were found in unmarked boxes, never picked up, certainly never released. The labels are a facsimile of the Boddie's custom acetate sticker, pressed on 48 gram vinyl, housed in a tape box, and sealed with Boddie Recording kraft tape."

Title: Knocking At The Wrong Door/One Little Piece
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: 7"
Price: $5.50
Catalog #: ES 001EP
"After we finished Eccentric Soul: The Deep City Label, a grip of tapes turned up at famed Miami producer Willie Clarke's ex-wife's house. From the second we heard this unreleased Deep City girl group, we knew it had to be available on 45, for no other purpose than to file it in our own boxes. 'Knockin' At The Wrong Door' borrows heavily from the Jackson Five's 'I Want You Back,' while the flip is a nice ballad in the Honey Cone vein. Limited to 500 copies and housed in a gorgeous two-tone Eccentric Soul sleeve for easy filing."

Artist: LITTLE ED & THE SOUNDMASTERS
Title: Little Ed & The Soundmasters
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: 3x7" BOX
Price: $21.00
Catalog #: ES 002BOX
"Chicago's only blues-funk family band with an eight-year-old drummer finally gets their due in this elaborate 3x45 box set. Stationed on Chicago's west side between 1965-1972, the Fisher brothers worked their novelty act at any club that was willing to bend the city's stiff liquor laws. Three 45s were cut for their homespun Fised and Fished labels, with the third featuring the first known recordings of notorious bluesman Johnny Dollar. Chock full of photos stripped from family photo albums, the 12 page booklet tells the complete Soundmaster story, from their earliest days backing J.B. Hutto to Little Ed's final snare cracks for Southside Movement. Housed in a tipped-on 7" box, the set sets a new standard for funk 45s."

Title: Wait a Minute
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: 7"
Price: $5.50
Catalog #: ES 002EP
"From our recent compilation Eccentric Soul: The Prix Label comes the best 45 the Columbus, Ohio imprint failed to release. 'Wait A Minute' is the same version issued on the CD, while the instrumental flip is only available on the deluxe LP version. Both cuts are must-haves in any self respecting Northern soul lover's collection, and certifiable future monsters on that scene. Limited to 500 copies and housed in a gorgeous two-tone Eccentric Soul sleeve for easy filing."

Artist: JOHNSON, SYL
Title: Mythological 45s
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: 5x7" BOX
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: ES 003BOX
"If there was one complaint we heard about Syl Johnson's massive 6LP/4CD overview Complete Mythology, it was its lack of portability. At 6.5 pounds, it doesn't travel well between DJ gigs. And with a dozen previously unreleased undeniable floor fillers, it wasn't long before folks began clamoring for a handful of these tunes on the compact 45 format. Sprawled across five 45s and wrapped in a custom Syl Johnson kraft tape, the 10 songs packaged within cover a range of black music styles. From the uptempo northern sound of 'Do You Know What Love Is' to the work out funk of 'Right On,' this limited edition singles box is an instant party starter."

Title: Poon Thang Thump Parts 1 & 2
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: 7"
Price: $5.50
Catalog #: ES 003EP
"A year after finishing Eccentric Soul: The Bandit Label a Chicago collector approached us about a heretofore unknown 45 on Arrow Brown's increasingly mysterious imprint. Only two copies are known of the Michigan Avenue Sound Orchestra's retardedly funky instrumental 'Poon Tang Thump Parts 1 & 2,' and it was crushing us not to have them available. Finally, Bandit completists can get some sleep! Limited to 500 copies and housed in a gorgeous two-tone Eccentric Soul sleeve for easy filing."

Title: No Longer/Endlessly
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: 7"
Price: $5.50
Catalog #: ES 012EP
"The story of the Capsoul master tapes is well known: after City National Bank of Columbus foreclosed on the debt the label incurred to found the city's most successful soul label, owner Bill Moss hid the tapes at a family friend's farm in Central Ohio to dodge repossession. But a flood finished the job that the bank had started, and Capsoul's legacy was left in the hands of rare soul collectors a generation later. Or so we thought. A shocking discovery was recently unearthed in songwriter Dean Francis' basement: two heretofore unheard Four Mints songs, produced by Francis and recorded in the Capsoul studios with the Capsoul session musicians. A postscript in the Capsoul story from their greatest group, pressed to bevel-edged 45s with lovingly recreated label art to fully invoke the magic of an original Bill Moss production."

Artist: PENNY AND THE QUARTERS
Title: You And Me/You Are Giving Me Some Other Love
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: 7"
Price: $5.50
Catalog #: ES 018EP
"As featured in Blue Valentine, completely out of left field, we heard from respected screen actor and avowed Numero fan Ryan Gosling that Penny's piercing bit of stripped down doo-wop was being considered for inclusion in Derek Cianfrance's indie-weeper film Blue Valentine. What we didn't know was that 'You and Me' had been given a major role in what became a minor hit on the indie circuit, and that Penny & the Quarters would acquire instant status as the world's most famous unknown doo-wop group."

Artist: BRUNER
Title: Songs For A Friend
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: LP
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: NPH 44002LP
"Thought to have been recorded between her stint with Rockford, Illinois, psych-rock outfit Pisces and her lone 45 on the Vincent label, Songs For A Friend is the last known recordings by Linda Bruner. Tracked in one continuous session in the back of Nielson's Music Store, Bruner drags herself through five doleful reinterpretations ('Don't Let Me Down,' 'Thorn Tree In The Garden,' 'Georgia On My Mind,' 'Wichita Lineman,' 'Rainy Night In Georgia') and one original. This neglected lover's note caught our eye by chance, the blue spine of its box crying out from a disheveled clutch of Pisces outtake reels. We've chosen to preserve the tape's intimacies, allowing it to roll through its imperfections, bits of banter, and hiss. If her disconsolate pop recreations reveal a tormented songbird soaring toward the edge of despair, its only affirmation of what little we know for sure about Linda Bruner, now long lost. Pressed on high quality 150 Gram virgin vinyl, the 20 minute mini-album features an etched B-side and is housed in a textured tip-on sleeve."

Title: Eccentric Soul: The Capsoul Label
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 001CD
"Short for 'Capital City Soul,' the Columbus Ohio Capsoul label's history spans only five short years throughout the 1970's. Founded by Bill Moss, a local singer and DJ at WVKO in Columbus, Capsoul released just a dozen 45's and one highly sought after LP resulting in a few regional hits. Numero 001 is a compilation of nineteen tracks spanning the label's all but forgotten history. The album features Johnson, Hawkins, Tatum & Durr, The Kool Blues, Ronnie Taylor, the Four Mints, Bill Moss, Elijah and the Ebonites and Marion Black. The soul is there by the bucketful -- sweet '70s gems by such little-known artists as Marion Black, Bill Moss, and the staggering Johnson, Hawkins, Tatum & Durr -- but there's nothing particularly esoteric or unusual about the music. To the contrary, it goes down as smoothly as that of Marvin Gaye, the JBs, the Four Tops, and other R&B legends."

Artist: ANTENA
Title: Camino Del Sol
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 002CD
"The best French-Belgian electro-samba record you've never heard. Antena's Camino Del Soul was first released in September 1982 as 5-song, 18-minute mini-LP on the elusive Brussels label, Les Disques Du Crepuscule. Numero 002 contains re-mastered versions of the original Camino Del Sol tracks compiled along with the band's first EP, period B-sides, compilation tracks and two unreleased cuts. 'With any justice, it will bring new light to a lost gem, as similar reissues did for Os Mutantes, whose adolescent dementia influences this record's tropicalia songs ('The Boy from Ipanema', 'Sissexa'), and Shuggie Otis, whose piquantly primitive drum machines propel each track. So much hidden influence lies in these songs. The wonderful opening punch of 'To Climb the Cliff' and the title track predate Stereolab's Gainsbourg-gone-Kraftwerk by over a decade, and Air's cool, Parisian sex by nearly two." -- Pitchfork.

Artist: MASTER JAY & MICHAEL DEE
Title: T.S.O.B.
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: 12"
Price: $8.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 002EP
"The second and third in Numero's series of disco 12"s come from the T.S.O.B. label, a tiny Brooklyn outfit that operated from 1980-1982. While the label is best known for supplying the infectious horn sample in the Beastie's 'Brass Monkey,' there were a handful of other amazing 12" singles that found a way to avoid the ears of Mike D and company. Master Jay & Michael Dee's 'T.S.O.B.' is a raw slice of discofied rap that has been bootlegged to death over the last decade. Re-mastered for the first time and pressed on 150 gram vinyl, this is the the definitive reissue of a lost New York pre-hop classic."

Artist: ANTENA
Title: Camino Del Sol
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: 2LP
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 002LP
"1982, Brussels: The former au pair for Rick Wakeman of Yes and two of her teenage friends are at the doorstep of Les Disques Du Crepuscule to make an album with Gilles Martin. Living on busking wages and next door to Tuxedomoon, they manage to make a contemporary bossanova record that provides the missing link between Antonio Carlos Jobim and Kraftwerk. Antena's album would be issued and promptly forgotten, with Isabelle Antena moving toward jazz in Asia and the others returning to France. Twenty years later, it was findable only as a VG+ LP with a sticker price of $4.99. Intrigued by the striking cover's patio furniture at rest in the south of France, we scooped up Camino Del Sol immediately, giving it the distinction as the second record in our library. Six years later, we're finally issuing it on LP. The original Camino Del Sol has been given back its spacious mini- LP quarters, packaged in a replica of its Benoit Hennebert-designed sleeve, while the remaining tracks (including all four songs from the 'Boy From Ipanema' session, 'Seaside Weekend,' two Crepescule compilation cuts, and four period outtakes) have been given their own LP, recasting this short-lived combo's forward-thinking mile marker as a modern-day masterstroke." Deluxe gatefold sleeve with full-color printed inner sleeves.

Title: Eccentric Soul: The Bandit Label
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 003CD
"The follow up to Eccentric Soul: The Capsoul Label couldn't be in any sharper a contrast. Where Capsoul hid in the remnants of dying R&B, Bandit was leading the pack towards disco and funk. More Brunswick than Motown, Bandit should fit in nicely between your Chi-Lites and Jackson 5 albums. Eccentric Soul: The Bandit Label takes a look at the underside of Chicago soul through twenty tracks of blistering R&B, sweet soul, and discofied funk. Hundreds of hours were spent researching, interviewing, re-mastering, and compiling the history of Bandit and the life of Arrow Brown. It might be the deepest we'll ever dig. No map, no shovel, just a stack of 45's and a city of three million people."

Title: Man For My Lady
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: 12"
Price: $8.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 003EP
"'Man For My Lady' was a semi-custom offering by Sabata, an alias for legendary R&B producer George Kerr. The track is boogie to the B, replete with electro keys and enough 808 to get even the most stapled of wallflowers to bend a knee. The original and edit are both offered here, along with an extended instrumental re-edit by Earwig."

Title: Rub A Dub Dub
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: 12"
Price: $8.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 004EP
"The fourth in Numero's ongoing disco 12" series comes from the archives of the Bronx's Tap label. Found on a reel simply marked 'Rub A Dub,' the eight-minute disco-rap achieved classic status on our office stereo within the hour via its infectious whistles, key steps and synth vamps. Included here are the vocal and the extended instrumental, the latter of which is a guaranteed floor filler. Both cuts are previously unreleased and come housed in our stock disco sleeve."

Artist: JONES, FERN
Title: The Glory Road
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 005CD
"She sounded like Saturday night on a Sunday morning. Patsy on Jesus. Elvis without the pelvis. A mother, a wife, even an ordained minister. In the space of twenty years Fern Jones would perform in over 2,000 tents and churches for nearly 50,000 people. She'd release two albums and a few impossibly rare 78s, and write one song that would be a classic on the gospel circuit for years to come. So why hasn't anyone ever heard of Fern Jones? How is her record selling on Ebay for less than $15? How is it possible that rockabilly scholars can tell you every detail about the players on Fern's album, but not a single thing about her? In what world can a musician be covered by Jimmie Davis, the Blackwood Brothers, Jimmy Swaggart, and even The Man In Black himself, Johnny Cash, and yet register not so much as a footnote in any history of country or gospel music? How could something so wonderful be so impossibly obscure? From a purely historical perspective, we knew we had to release this record. Singing A Happy Song had not one, not two, but four members of Nashville's prestigious A-team fresh off June 1958 sessions with Elvis. On guitar was Hank 'Sugarfoot' Garland (Roy Orbison, Marty Robbins, Conway Twitty, Hank Williams Sr., Everly Brothers), Floyd Cramer played piano (Bobby Bare, Patsy Cline, Wings, Johnny Cash, Chet Atkins), Joe Zinkan on bass (Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn), and the lovable Buddy Harman on drums (Reba McEntire, Hank Snow, Willie Nelson). Why this towering foursome was backing up a preacher's wife from Arkansas is anyone's guess. The lone album Fern Jones released on Dot Records in 1959 was the culmination of almost 20 years on the gospel highway. Singing A Happy Song was Sister Fern bringing the same untamed energy to church music that young white Southerners were bringing to their rock n' roll."

Format: 12"
Price: $8.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 005EP
"The fifth in Numero's ongoing disco 12" series features a track from our recent compilation Cult Cargo: Grand Bahama Goombay. The flip features a re-edit by LeSpam and a housey remix by the Shoes crew. Housed in our stock disco sleeve for easy crate ID."

Title: Cult Cargo: Belize City Boil Up
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 006CD
"Samba Soul. Afro-beat. Reggae. What were once loose-fitting descriptions for American influenced homegrown R&B, are now but common parlance in the lexicon of genre classification. These regional movements all yielded monumental sonic innovations that returned to America with tidal force, eventually flooding the world with third world treasure. The music of Detroit and Memphis were quite possibly America's largest cultural export of the 1960s, spawning imitators with every radio wave that whispered 'I've got sunshine... or Sittin' in the morning sun... into the fertile ear of the uninitiated. For every Nigeria there were ten Ghana's, and every shiny Brazilian soulster had his counterpart in Peru, Argentina, and Columbia. Good news travels fast, and as the gospel of American soul hit the beaches of Trinidad, the Bahamas, and in this case, Belize, it was as though the Gods had not just spoken, but sung. A Cargo Cult is what happens when one culture begins worshipping the byproducts of another. Cult Cargo is the unexpected result of that devotion. It is here in these sixty odd minutes that The Numero Group unveils a style of music completely unknown to the greater world before we dragged it from the beaches of Belize. The national dish of Belize is made with a diverse mixture of ingredients, pig's tail, potatoes, plantains, bananas, boiled eggs, yams, whole fish, thrown in a pot, and boiled to perfection. They call it a Boil Up. The music of this collection combines equal parts of R&B, calypso, disco, funk, reggae, bruckdown, soul, folk, and whatever else can be found back on the bottom shelf of the musical pantry. This too is called Boil Up, and it's anything but leftovers."

Title: Eccentric Soul: The Deep City Label
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 007CD
"The third release in Numero's Eccentric Soul series traces the roots of disco back to 1964 via a troop of marching misfits. The Deep City label launched the career of Betty Wright, Little Beaver, Paul Kelly, Clarence Reid (and subsequently Blowfly), and Grammy winning producer Willie Clarke, before going under in 1968. A cross between Detroit rhythms and Memphis brass, the Deep City sound, and its players, helped create the disco explosion of the early 1970s. Culled from the collection of Florida music historian Jeff Lemlich, the tracks selected showcase the talents of relative unknowns like the Moovers, Them Two, Johnny K. Killens, Frank Williams, and Helene Smith, and also features the earliest work ever recorded by Paul Kelly and Betty Wright."

Artist: MISSY DEE & THE MELODY CREW
Title: Missy Missy Dee
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: 12"
Price: $8.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 007EP
"The seventh in Numero's ongoing 12" series delves even further into archives of New York's Tap label. Missy Dee & the Melody Crew cut this tremendous slice of disco rap in 1981, only hours after fellow Tap-mates the Fabulous 3 MCs went upside down and back again on 'Rub A Dub Dub.' Check the whistle on the instrumental flip for further proof. The original 12" is rare not only for its quantity pressed, but for the quality of the four teenage girl rappers -- nearly unparalleled at the time. While Missy Dee rocked many a block party, Lady T was the real standout, having come up as a member of Kurtis Blow's crew. Her later work as MC Tatiana can be heard on the classic Clockin ZZZZs 12" 'Mission To Rock.' Mastered from the original tapes, including all 8+ minutes of the vocal take, this reissue should take the Melody Crew from rap jesters to hip-hop princesses."

Catalog #: NUMERO 007LP
Double LP version, deluxe gatefold sleeve. "Possibly the most influential of all the '60s Miami soul labels, the Deep City sound not only changed the metro Dade area, but set the tone for disco powerhouse TK's impressive run in the '70s. The singles on Willie Clark and Johnny Pearsall's Lloyd and Deep City labels are Florida's rarest of the rare, and we've collected the best of their four year run here. Includes Betty Wright and Paul Kelly's first sides, the can't-miss-but-did diva Helene Smith, obscure work by Frank Williams & the Rocketeers, as well as a previously unreleased acetate by the Moovers. Also featuring Them Two, Paul Kelly, Johnny K. Killens, Freda Gray & The Rocketeers and Frank Williams & The Rocketeers."

Title: Wayfaring Strangers: Ladies From the Canyon
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 008CD
Compilaton of obscure and unknown 1970s female folk artists, featuring Becky Severson, Collie Ryan, Linda Rich, Caroline Peyton, Carla Sciaky, Judy Kelly, Shira Small, Jennie Pearl, Mary Perrin, Priscilla Quinby, Marj Snyder, Barbara Sipple, Ginny Reilly & Ellen Warshaw. For those looking to go beyond the Perhacs/Sill resurgence, this is a pretty insightful set, well documented in Numero-style. "By 1970 the folk revival was all but over. Gone were the days of 'Will The Circle Be Unbroken' and 'If I Had A Hammer.' ABC's Hootenanny had been cancelled. Broadside was out, Rolling Stone in. Richard Farina was dead. Dylan plugged in. Joan Baez and Judy Collins gave way to a younger, more introspective generation of songwriters. The sound that began in the hills and caught fire on the lower east side of Manhattan was now being reborn in the canyons of California. The fruits of folk's second renaissance are collected here. Wedged beneath the infrastructure of the music business, playing in coffee houses and at church picnics. Deeper than recent crit-revisionist darlings Linda Perhacs, Judee Sill, or Vashti Bunyan, Ladies From The Canyon takes a solid look at folk's private and obscure underbelly."

Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 009CD
"The fourth volume in our Eccentric Soul series examines the oil stained underside of the Motor City sound. There are no gold records, million dollar buyouts, or quaint museums at the end of the story, just a handful of four figure 45s, a box of photographs, and a condemned building. If Detroit was once an ocean of soul, the Big Mack label was certainly an island. Big Mack lasted an incredible twenty years without so much as a sniff of a hit. Dogged by lack of airplay, distribution, and a general lack of understanding of the music business, the label failed on almost every level except where it counted; the music. From soulful doowop to blistering garage funk, a left at sultry R&B and then a quick dodge into budget Hendrix wailing over a steel drum break, this disc is the epitome of Eccentric Soul. Artists include Bob & Fred, the Manhattens, Edd Henry, Ms Tyree Jones, the Essence, the Performers, Mae Young, the Soul President, the Sleepwalkers, the Grand Prix's, and L. Hollis & the Mackadoos."

Label: NUMERO GROUP

Catalog #: NUMERO 009EP
"The Numero 12" series returns after a three year hiatus with an oddball nugget from the Boddie Recording Company vault. No record of the identity Doc Rhymin' was discovered in our thorough excavation, but as the Boddies manufacturing trickled to a halt in 1987, and these three songs are clearly influenced by LL Cool J's Bigger And Deffer, we're comfortable assuming this came out on maxi-cassette in 1987. Cleveland rap differs from the sounds emanating from New York and Los Angeles in one major way: most of the region's recorded output has no samples. Copies of Ultimate Breaks & Beats were extremely scarce, leaving upstart rhymsters high on VHS-dubs of Yo! MTV Raps to lean heavily on programmed drum machines and keyboards rather than 'Funky Drummer' and 'Different Strokes.' Doc Rhymin's basic 808 approach does not disappoint, as he lets his well rehearsed cadence carry each of the 12"s three songs with nary a gimmick to be heard."

Title: Good God! A Gospel Funk Hymnal
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 010CD
"A collection of this nature can only exist in hindsight. 'Gospel Funk' is a genre in the same way that deep soul or acid folk is, created by collectors and enthusiasts as a way to define a subsection of another genre. There aren't any labels, artists, or producers that focused strictly on funky gospel music, rather, there were a couple hundred groups that had a funkier number in their repertoire. The Numero Group has spent the last year scouring LPs and 45s for tracks that fit this bill, and have collected 18 standouts from this newly minted genre. The album is a mix of primitive choirs, spacious breaks, congas, elderly rappers impersonating the devil, cast recordings, thumping bass, and JB impressionists, all with a heavy slathering of gospel gravy. Featuring tracks by Preacher & the Saints, 5 Spiritual Tones, Mighty Walker Brothers, Masonic Wonders, Mighty Voices of Wonder, Voices of Conquest, Gospel Comforters, Horace Family, Trevor Dandy, Sam Taylor, Triumphs, Brother John Witherspoon, Shackleford Singers, Cliff Gober, Universal Jubileers, Modulations, Apostles of Music and LaVice & Company."

Dyke & the Blazers were great, sure, but when we heard a cover of 'Funky Broadway' being destroyed by a wedding band, we knew that there had to be more to the legacy of Arizona soul than an awkward teenager doing the centipede. Enter producer/songwriter Mike Lenaburg and his ramshackle 'stable' of performers; Michael Liggins, Ronnie Whitehead, Sheila Jack, We The People, Small Paul, Lon Rogers, the Soul Blenders, the Soulsations, and, arrests pending, the Newlyweds. Released on a half dozen local and national labels throughout the '60s and '70s, Lenaburg's recordings represent that wrong side of the desert sound. A melange of Tejano psychedelia, flutey funk, horny soul, and fist fight doo-wop, 'Eccentric' just might be an understatement."

Title: Eccentric Soul: Mighty Mike Lenaberg
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: 2LP
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 011LP
"Five years since our initial CD release, Eccentric Soul: Mighty Mike Lenaburg finally makes it back to its intended format as a deluxe double LP. This 180 gram 'Loaded To The Gills' edition features 10 bonus tracks, scores of new photographs, and new liner notes, all housed in a heavy gatefold jacket. Eccentric Soul: Mighty Mike Lenaburg chronicles Phoenix, Arizona's off-'Funky Broadway' scene that happened while Dyke and his Blazers were setting national charts on fire in the late '60s/early '70s. Covering Tejano psych, flute funk, both horny soul and horny kid soul, cackling R&B, deep ballads, and fist-fight doowop, Lenaburg channeled that wrong side of the desert sound to a dozen 45s for the Mighty, Darlene, Homogenized Sound, Ramco, and Out of Sight imprints. Although listing these totally obscure groups is an exercise in futility, we've typed them out anyway; Michael Liggins, the Super Souls, We The People, Ronnie Whitehead, Small Paul, the Soulsations, Lon Rogers, the Soul Blenders, Sheila Jack, Clarence Townes, and the Newlyweds."

Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 012CD
"The first ever compact disc issue of Catherine Howe's brilliant debut album. Produced by legendary jazz pianist Bobby Scott, the album is a pastoral blend of English countryside folk and London orchestral pop, not unlike Nick Drake's Bryter Layter or Bridget Saint John's Songs For a Gentle Man. Originally released on Reflection Records in 1970, the much sought after album disappeared after only a few months in the racks. Lovingly restored by The Numero Group (the label that Paste magazine calls 'America's finest music archivists'), the original 12 song album has been fully re-mastered, includes bonus tracks, a thoroughly researched history of the album, and a tidy slip case tying it to the rest of the Numero library."

"Since arriving on London racks in the summer of 1970, Catherine Howe's debut album has been unavailable in its original format. Less than 20 LP copies survived Reflection Records' demise, and the album sat in the can until Numero's 2007 CD issue. Produced by the legendary jazz pianist Bobby Scott, this orchestral-folk master stroke has once again been set to lacquer, remastered and restored directly from the original master tapes specifically for this deluxe vinyl release. Gatefold package includes replica LP art and complete annotation on the sessions and history of this forgotten Brit-folk treasure." "It's like some missing link between Sandy Denny and Karen Carpenter, or between Ladies of the Canyon and Dusty in Memphis . If you buy no other reissue this year, buy this." - Barney Hoskyns, Guardian UK

"This is the Big Dig, the Tutankamen of R&B: Twinight. After two years of interviews, cold calls, storage spaces, half truths, unknowns, and dead ends, we've finally completed a large piece of Chicago's secret soul history. Eccentric Soul: Twinight's Lunar Rotation takes a look beyond their hit maker Syl Johnson, and instead focuses on the records that never had a shot at the charts. It's the story of struggling disc jockeys moonlighting as producers, high school talent show winners, major label cast offs, minor label upgrades, girlfriends with decent voices, and master purchases traded for chart position. It happened after midnight, and it happened right here in our backyard. Comprising 40 tracks in all by 22 artists, among them Renaldo Domino, Dynamic Tints, Annette Poindexter, Nate Evans, Radiants, Notations, Mystiques, Kaldirons, Perfections, Mist, Harrison & The Majestic Kind, Schiller Street Gang, Velma Perkins, Jimmy Jones, Sidney Pinchback, Stormy, Johnny Williams, Elvin Spencer and Pieces Of Peace. This comprehensive two CD set includes a complete label history (32 pages), a baker's dozen of unpublished photos and three unreleased tracks, including two that were only rumored to exist."

"After a box of thought-to-be-lost Deep City master tapes turned up in Miami in January of 2007, an idea both fascinating and ugly reared its head: sequel. Disgusted by the thought of merely making on record to capitalize on the success of the first, we sought to turn the idea on its head. Instead of rehashing and expanding upon an already established story, The Outskirts of Deep City serves to color in the spaces left open by its predecessor. In addition to seven previously unissued tracks, we've added thirteen other related gems from the Solid Soul, Sun Cut, Reedsville, Lloyd, and Concho labels, and four LP-only bonus cuts. Old style tip-on gatefold sleeve for the vinyl, 32-page booklet housed in a Numero slipcase for the CD, with both featuring a wealth of unpublished photographs, an appendix, bibliography, and discography. "Continuing a tradition that began with Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, and culminated with Shaft and Superfly, Brotherman was a blaxploitation film set to hit screens in 1975. Prior to the script being finished, the producers commissioned an original sound track to be performed by The Final Solution, a fledgling vocal group from Chicago's west side. In classic Numero fashion, before even one foot of film was shot, the plug was pulled and the movie was cancelled. Dragged around for 30 years by songwriter, guitarist and arranger Carl Wolfolk, the tapes of his life's work have finally been mixed, and the soundtrack album has been augmented to include two orchestrated instrumentals intended for the film. Having no stills from the film to work with, the Numero Group tasked Minneapolis' Burlesque of North America to paint a cover that could withstand the scrutiny of any blaxploitation poster geek. The deluxe single disc set is housed in our standard slipcase, with a plush booklet detailing the known history of the film and the group that created the music."

Title: Eccentric Soul: The Young Disciples

"By 1967, East St. Louis, once dubbed an 'All-American' city by the U.S. Chamber Of Commerce, had become St. Louis, Missouri's evil twin. Unemployment, drug addiction and vicious gang activity put a dark and heavy lid on a bi-state area that once cooked-up world-changing talent the likes of Chuck Berry, Josephine Baker and Miles Davis. But both cities still spawned heroes, and Allen Merry was one of them. Already a living legend for his early work with Ray Charles and Ike Turner, Merry channeled his talent into teaching, forming the Young Disciples through the South End Community Center to keep the kids off the streets, out of the gangs and into the studio, where young men and women spiraling downward could ride the spiral groove upward on Merry's YoDi, Gateway and Merry labels. With nearly 80 local youths involved from both sides of the Mississippi, the Young Disciples (named for one of the area's most notorious gangs) encompassed solo acts, duos, male and female vocal groups, a massive horn section and a troupe of African dancers. Every sweat-drenched recording included here emerged from this grass-roots organization that changed, if not saved, lives. Former East St. Louis Mayor Carl Officer had a slogan he liked to pitch: 'There's A City Under Here.' Here's the musical proof of that possibility."

Their Midwest AM bubblegum roots are apparent in the likes of Gary Charlson, the Secrets, Arlis!, Gems, Millionaire At Midnight, the Boys, J.P. Title: Gone: The Promises Of Yesterday
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 025CD
"An era was finding its end. Union Planters National Bank had finally pulled up the roots of Stax Records, leaving hundreds of musicians locked out of 926 East McLemore and the Chicago chapter of 24-Carat Black on the hook for months spent in the studio. Their debut album, a commercial and financial disaster, was par for the course during Al Bell's reign as the Memphis label's head. Rediscovered in the early '90s by Britain's rare groove scene, Ghetto: Misfortune's Wealth has since been known as 24-Carat Black's first and final chapter, barely a footnote in the well documented history of Stax. Dale Warren's brainchild band simply pushed past their concept's conclusion, piling up dozens of reels for an intimate follow-up album that no one in the world wanted to hear. With their ambitious LP downgraded to cutout status when Stax finally shuttered in 1975, 24-Carat Black found themselves watching their moment recede in the rearview. In his post-Ghetto work, Dale Warren had clearly aimed for a complete reinvention, of both his band and his songwriting past. Of more than 20 songs he considered for the 24-Carat Black follow-up, we've refurbished the six that hadn't flaked off their reels. Gone: The Promises Of Yesterday is by no means a sequel to Ghetto: Misfortune's Wealth. Missing are the poignant and bleak sermons on the pain of inner-city existence, replaced by dusky, sensuous re-workings of love songs Warren had written as far back as 1965. Wildly divergent in tone, scope, and mission, the second 24-Carat Black album is tethered to the first by a single, crucial element: its creator." Title: Wayfaring Strangers: Lonesome Heroes
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 028CD
"The standard route for popular music -- songwriter to publisher to label to artist -- survived the '60s only to be overrun by a generation of folkies agog at giants strumming in the rearview. They were inspired by iconoclasts from Charley Patton to Woody Guthrie, artists entirely reliant on one guitar, one voice, and one's own words. But our heroes were not the agrarian luddites of yesterfolk. They cheered when Dylan plugged in and were rapt when Lennon and McCartney modernized songcraft, making the studio process just as important to song creation as setting the chords and words down. The resultant work wasn't as readily reduced to words on paper as the Broadside pages that preceded them -- success relied heavily on the way these songs were captured and transmitted: the sound of the room, the turn of a phrase, the odd way a piano got mic'ed, or the way a guitar fell perfectly out of tune. As long as the end result was somber, dark, and meditative, it didn't matter if it was a conscious choice or a happily unhappy accident. Each of our lonesome heroes began his journey from a wildly divergent place. Some of the stops may been similar, but each was made in different ways at different times for different reasons. All these travellers somehow found their ultimate destination on this disc. From artists who never played one professional gig to those that never stopped playing professionally, whose only shared experience is a journey set upon with no known end, sharing their thoughts, emotions and dreams with a lonely few along the way. Male singer/songwriter companion to Numero 008, Wayfaring Strangers: Ladies From The Canyon and Numero 018, Wayfaring Strangers: Guitar Soli. 17 rare tracks by folk unknowns Jim Schoenfeld, Jim Ransom, Richard Smyrnios, Tucker Zimmermann, Kierian White, Les Moore, Rob Carr, Jack Hardy, George Cromarty, Jay Bolotin, Tony Trosley, Roger Lewis, Tim Ward, David Kaufmann, John Villemonte, Bob Brown and Robb Kunkel." Title: A Lovely Sight
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 029CD
"By the late '60s, radio-delivered psychedelia had saturated even the heartland. A Lovely Sight, Pisces' only attempt at an LP, never made wax; but the fuzz guitar phrases and tambourine shuffle of 'Dear One' instantly illustrate the band's woozy realm. Deeper inside, bass scales borrowed from Sgt. Pepper give way to Who moves wrecked by bad fidelity and harsh intrusions of found audio. Jefferson Airplane's swirled, lysergic Haight Street utopia melds with the urban narcosis of the Velvet Underground's East Village. But Pisces hailed from another ghost town altogether: Rockford, Illinois, where rusted, endless plains bear close resemblance to a bummer acid trip or a junkie's rock bottom. In 1969, the industrial Midwest was hurting for the hard stuff, but what it got was plenty of the White Album -- enough to have Jim Krein, Paul DiVenti, and Linda Bruner recording through a glass onion all their own. The unsettling balance of their unissued LP combines homespun psychedelic vision and secondhand studio trickery with naive readings of the rock sound of the day, resulting in a diverse, haunted rock headspace few coastal bands ever flew through, let alone over." Includes 16-page booklet loaded with band info and pictures, and a Numero Group trading card.

Title: Good God! Born Again Funk
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 030CD
"The Numero Group's 2006 release Good God! A Gospel Funk Hymnal examined what seemed to be a conundrum: gospel singers performing pious gospel songs, and devoutly, but doing so amid hot, sweaty, earthy sounds drunk on the same moonshine downed by any blues singer thumbing his way up north from the Mississippi delta. If the central premise was to grapple with a 'funky' trend in gospel, forgive us for staring perhaps a bit too intently at the collision of sacred and profane we thought we saw on those LPs and 45s. This music was always sacred, and decidedly so. Four years later, Numero returns with not quite a New Testament, rather a re-examination of a weighty tome. Born Again Funk lends new ears to a joyful strain of American composers and performers unafraid of expressing their devotion with both inspiration and invention. They were faithful to a spirit, not to an ordained sound." Featuring Pastor T.L. Barrett & the Youth For Christ Choir, Ada Richards, Gospel Comforters, Golden Echoes, Lucy "Sister Soul" Rodgers, Gospel Soul Revivals, Brother Samuel Cheatham, Victory Travelers, Jordan Travelers, Inspirational Gospel Singers, Sacred Four, Andrew Wartts & the Gospel Storytellers, Holy Disciples of Chicago, Ill, Sensational Five Singing Sons, Little Chris & the Righteous Singers, Sensational Five, Chicago Travelers, James Austin & the St. Luke COGIC Youth Choir.

Artist: JARNOW, AL
Title: Celestial Navigations: The Short Films Of Al Jarnow
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: DVD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 031DVD
"Tens of millions of people have seen these films. nobody knows who made them. Curled up on our couches in the wee hours of the morning, in reruns, and nostalgic You Tube forwards, filmmaker Al Jarnow has touched our lives and changed the way we look at the world without us ever knowing. Beginning with his work for a certain public television show that featured a big yellow bird, Al Jarnow captured life's scientific minutia and boiled it down for easy consumption between cookie eating monsters and counting vampires. Coupling time-lapse, stop motion, and cell animation with simple objects found in every day life, Jarnow deconstructed the world for an entire generation. From the third floor of his Long Island gingerbread home, his mind wandered beyond the confines of educational programming. Delving into New York's avant-garde film scene alongside Harry Smith, Jonas Mekas and Stan Brakhage, Jarnow created a body of awe-inspiring films that remain in the collections of MOMA and Pompideau Center. Employing the archival skills honed during the excavation of over 40 full-length albums, Celestial Navigations marks The Numero Group's first foray into the world of cinema. The 45 films collected have been transferred and color corrected from the original 16mm prints, along with fully remastered sound. Special features include a 30-minute documentary on Jarnow's creative process, as well as film playlists designed for both children and adults alike. The deluxe package includes a 60-page book loaded to the gills with essays, ephemera, storyboards, photos, and a complete film index, all housed in the iconic Numero slipcase." Region 0; color and B&W; full screen; total running time: 110 minutes. Includes a 60-page full color book.

Artist: JOHNSON, SYL
Title: Complete Mythology
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: 6LP+4CD BOX
Price: $80.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 032LP
"In the 40 years since Syl Johnson exited Chicago's Twinight label for Memphis' Hi Records concern, the world has been struggling to grasp and package the early years of this legendary soul man's career. Endless compilations, botched bootlegs, and shabby two-fers litter his section card, ear and eyesores all. Four years in the making, Complete Mythology is by far the most exhaustively researched and meticulously presented work from The Numero Group to date. Encompassing the first fifteen years of a career that spans half a century, Complete Mythology not only covers his obvious hits but shines a light into the dark corners of a true musical visionary. Born Sylvester Thompson in Holly Springs, Mississippi, Johnson sang and played with blues artists Magic Sam, Billy Boy Arnold, Junior Wells and Howlin' Wolf in the 1950's, before recording with Jimmy Reed for Vee-Jay in 1959. His break was to come recording for Twinight Records of Chicago in 1967. Johnson dominated the label as both a hit maker and producer, providing such hits as 'Come On Sock It to Me,' 'Different Strokes' (one of the most heavily sampled songs in the history of recorded music -- paid homage by N.W.A., Kid Rock, Michael Jackson, J. Dilla and dozens of others), 'Is It Because I'm Black' (which reached Number 11 on the Billboard R&B charts in 1969), among many more. Included on the 81-track, 6LP+4CD box (both formats included) are re-mastered versions of no less than twenty-eight singles from the Twinight, Federal, Cha-Cha, Tmp-Ting, Special Agent, and Zachron labels, facsimiles of the Dresses Too Short and Is It Because I'm Black albums, ten previously unreleased tracks and detailed track by track notes from acclaimed music historian Bill Dahl. The fifty-two page booklet contains a thirty-five thousand word essay, scores of previously unpublished photos, a sampling index, and complete discography -- all presented in a lavish hard-bound box. For the uninitiated, this is history; for those familiar, this is respect for one the greatest musical artists of our time."

Title: Light: On The South Side
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: 2LP/BOOK
Price: $60.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 033LP
"Between 1975-1977 Chicago's South Side night clubs were a little lighter. Not just because of a lanky white guy skulking about, but rather because of the camera and strobe light he carried. Michael Abramson hit Perv's House, Pepper's Hideout, The High Chaparral, The Patio Lounge, and The Showcase Lounge, not to capture the artists on stage, instead popping off a half dozen rolls every night on the crowd. Light: On The South Side gathers for the first time over 100 of these images, as Numero shines its own strobe on yet another dark corner of the past. The 132-page hard back book features photos, an ephemera section, and an essay by Nick Hornby. Housed in a gorgeous slipcase with the 12X12 book is Pepper's Jukebox , a seventeen track compilation of the kind of funky Chicago blues heard from the stage and the Wurlitizer. The deluxe 2LP set is packaged in a sharp gatefold jacket with two inner sleeves crammed to the gills with label scans and stories. All in all, it's the classiest Numero record ever made, spotted easily from across the room with it's near 2" spine."

Title: Local Customs: Lone Star Lowlands
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 034CD
"The second in Numero's series of peeks into the world of regional studios hones in on Mickey Rouse's Lowland operation out of Beaumont, Texas. Long after the Bopper's plane crashed and the Winter brothers (Johnny and Edgar) and Janis Joplin split, Texas' Golden Triangle was home to a vibrant scene of musicians, songwriters, and entrepreneurs just trying to make it in Houston, let alone the world. From the ashes of a vibrant garage and stage band scene, the Lowland studio and its clientele were formed. Holed up in a rundown strip mall, groups like Mourning Sun, Insight Out, Sage, Sassy, Mother Lion, Hope, Circus, and Boot Hill tracked out hundreds of demos, most of which were put on the shelf and left to bake in the South East Texas heat. Until now. Over the last two years, Numero has painstakingly gone through every tape in the studio's archives, selecting the best of the best for this peerless compilation. The songs themselves run the gamut; southern boogie rock, CSNY clones, British blues thunder, garage-psych hangovers, Morricone-esque supper club instrumentals, yacht rock, and what can only be described as Bobby McFerrin fronting the Velvet Underground, are threaded together in the way only a tightly-knit scene can be. Forget bringing these treasures back to life, Numero's giving them the life they never had." Includes a 36-page booklet with extensive notes and rare photos, and a Lowland studio family tree.

Title: Boddie Recording Company: Cleveland, Ohio
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: 3CD BOX
Price: $40.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 035CD
"From 1958 to 1993, Thomas and Louise Boddie's industrious Boddie Recording Company issued nearly 300 albums and 45s, recorded 10,000 hours of tape, and remained in operation longer than any other studio, pressing plant, or label group in the history of Cleveland. Long forgotten even by the standards of the chronically overlooked northeastern Ohio music scene, Boddie was a fusion of its owner's engineering genius and his limited economic means; its DIY recording studio housed in a humble barn, churned night and day to capture the sounds emanating from Cleveland's east side neighborhoods. The 57 tracks on these three CDs represent the best of the Boddies' in-house Soul Kitchen, Luau, and Bounty labels, which released an unspoiled treasure trove of kitchen-sink eccentric soul, fuzzbox funk, shoestring doo-wop, and haunted, eerily hook-laden spirituals. Enclosed inside is a mountain of office-styled ephemera: two massive booklets brimming with detail on the Boddies and their artists; extensive notes and scores of unpublished photos; a complete detailed discography folio; reproduced fliers; and a Boddie greeting card--all rendered with the handcrafted charm that was the Boddie hallmark. Call it a self-contained record industry crammed into one box."

Nearly 50 records survive in the wake of orquestas La Justicia, La Solucion, and Tipica Leal '79, the most impassioned, singular moments of which are compiled here. Title: Who's Gonna Save The World
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 037CD
"As much spiritual adherents of black sounds as they were of black Islam, Father's Children was born in the dirt and grime of Washington, D.C., and incubated in local producer Robert Hosea Williams' less-than-immaculate suburban beltway garage. Hailing from the Adams-Morgan neighborhood, in 1973 Nick Smith, Billy Sumler, and Ted 'Skeet' Carpenter created a lost document of gritty soul, concerned with its own time and place, stripped of the L.A. gloss that permeated the group's own 1979 'debut' for Mercury. Unreleased until now, Father's Children's true freshman offering is an amalgam of sunny vocal group harmonies, fuzz-guitar solos, shimmering keys, bubbling percussion, spiritual prophecy, and dub experiments. Who's Gonna Save The World gets the full Numero treatment, with extensive notes and scores of unpublished photos."

Artist: WRIGHT, WILLIE
Title: Telling The Truth
Label: NUMERO GROUP
Format: CD/5"
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: NUMERO 038CD
"Born of Harlem doo-wop roots and refined by Boston's counterculture scene, Wright arrived in Nantucket in 1976 well worn by two decades of street corner and club performing, eager to make the easy money only a private yacht clientele could guarantee. Trapped on the island over winter, a set of original songs poured into his cover-heavy set. Tales of Wright's native roots, straight life, his abandoned four children, and the many women he had known flooded his loose leaf notebook before finally being set to tape in New York the following spring. Tracked with George 'Buzzy' Bragg and Herry Jensen (of Skull Snaps and Jimmy Castor Bunch fame, respectively) in one day with minimal overdubs, Telling The Truth was, and would remain, Willie Wright's brightest and most inspired moment. Sold from the trunk of a car and from a handful of resort stages, the humble album disappeared into the collections and garages of Nantucket tourists, taking what was left of a near-30-year career along with it. Available for the first time since 1977, this expanded edition of Telling The Truth gathers Wright's lone 45 and only original composition from his first LP to tell the definitive Willie Wright story. The CD includes his cover of Curtis Mayfield's 'Right On For The Darkness' (with his original 'Africa' on the flip) and shrinks it to a portable 4.72" record that actually plays!"

Catalog #: NUMERO 039CD
"Nickel and Penny are twin sides of the same eccentric coin, and that coin was Chicago's #1 Dusties DJ Richard Pegue. He was the writer, arranger and producer of some of the most beautiful Chicago soul records in the '60s and '70s; too bad they all went out of print weeks after being released. On order here are rare sides by Jerry Townes, the Voices, the Norvells, Little Ben and & the Cheers, South Shore Commission, Joyce Williams, the Halleluiah Chorus, Brothers & Sisters and more. These twenty-four tracks tell Pegue's epic tale, from dedicated music producer, to DJ making corny radio jingles that usurped the tens of thousands of air-time hours the song included here so richly deserved."
