MONOTON

Catalog #:
ORAL 002CD
2003 reissue, originally recorded 1982; seminal German underground electronics. "Born from the desire to reintroduce on the market an outstanding, yet surprisingly unknown work of the 1980s, this ORAL release is also the result of a dialogue with hypermedia researcher and artist Konrad Becker, which occurred during chance, yet fruitful meetings. Sometimes in the path of a music lover and record collector, a work will beckon you, imposing itself with its singularity, depth and timelessness.
Monotonprodukt 07
, produced in 1982, is such a work."
"...is so alive with the pulses that triggered many electronicas to come, from techno through trance to Mego's creeping static, you could make a case for Becker's guruhood. Yet, for all its prescient washed out tones, threadbare textures and minimalist rigour, it has the edge on much that followed. Adopting an imperious art stance towards mainstreams and margins alike, Becker cast a cold analytic eye over electronica's urfathers, picking up on Suicide's jittertronic urgency, if not their melodrama, and DAF's throbbing sequencers, but with the sex threat removed, which he patched into his own crackling circuits, hissing vistas and tumbling beatstreams.

ORAL 009CD
Sensational minimal German electronics, first issued in 1980. Original LP title:
Blau
, CD subtitle:
Monotonprodukt 02: 26y++
. "CD release of the
Blau
vinyl written and produced by Monoton in 1980. Re-mastered in 2006. It also contains three unreleased tracks from that period. Since the late '70s, early 1980s, Monotonprodukt and the 'Institut für wissenschaftliche Sensation' (Institute for Scientific Sensations) have been working on the transposition of metamathematical structures, natural constants and resonance patterns in models of 'bionic' psychoactive automat music. Publications, installations and long-term experiments include among others, electro-acoustic representations of square roots, potences and periods, Pi-factors, Fibonacci sequences, Feigenbaum-Numbers, 'Magic Squares' and others. Konrad Becker wrote: 'Monoton on a quest for the spirit in the machine investigated the representation of a numeric structure on resonance field level; numerical systems and mathematical nature constants as values and proportions for bionic sound. Not only natural constants and their sub-elements offered themselves for operational definitions, but any proportion of numbers, the musician with the calculator in hand. Regardless of the aspect of universal machinic patterns, the transcendence of patterns, the 'de-programming' and the 'deletion' or reactive conditioning was their interest in transformative music. Noise is a simultaneous chaotic superposition of all frequencies, and the hearing of 'everything' and thus nothing at a time in the constant vibration of 'monotonous simulation'. It is on the basis of these subjective and oracular properties, that transformative music may be explained."

The Wonderful World of Male Intuition
Label:
ORAL (CANADA)
Format:

Price:

Catalog #:
ORAL 010CD
"Constructed as a one single piece, mostly using a large variation of sine wave oscillators interacting with sounds from the sea, land and outer space, its parts deal with the human phenomena called 'intuition.' The various stream-like pulse flows continues through the piece and inserts manipulated voices of different male person important to von Hausswolff's life are frequently heard. The persons are, according to the artist, important as 'positive energies in a world that obviously is feasting on itself without knowing how to go to the toilet'. The voices heard in some tracks are from artists, thinkers and prominents like The Dalai Lama, John Lilly, Albert Hoffman and Alvin Lucier...while other tracks are dedicated to fellow artists like Mika Vainio, Erkki Kurenniemi, Jim Thirlwell and Navin Rawanchaikul. This is the first part of two CDs dealing with the concept of Intuition. A 'must' have for all music lovers of Pan Sonic, John Duncan, Daniel Menche, Coh."

Waste Of Songs

"With
Waste Of Songs
Joe Colley offers a series of events jumping between brutal noise, field recording, and (fake?) psychoacoustic tonal interactions. The result is a tightly edited collage journey through states of mental duress and negative reactions to an environment. There are sounds of broken or dying equipment, devices pushed to limits, attempts to coax out spontaneous reactions from feedback and linked cheap electronics. A strong statement, and an evolution showing the next direction of his desire to reach emotional states through the coldness of electronic sound. Joe Colley (b.1972 Ft. Lauderdale) is a self-taught artist concerned primarily with the phenomena of sound and its unique ability to activate a consciousness set apart from rational understanding in a way very different from visual or verbal means. This consuming interest has led to extensive experimentation with results occasionally made public through performances, installations, and commercially available recordings. These experiments have encompassed abstract electronic/noise composition, amplification of natural phenomena, investigations into phase, and creation of complex mass from layers of simplistic sound material, often with an attention to the mundane or pathetic."

''Composing in three phases: First step: the recording of concrete sounds is relentless and the pleasure of caption is incredible and constantly renewed. The stronger the enthusiasm of the initial recording is, more interesting the sounds are once treated. The stronger the echo of that instant is, upon listening, the more musical the variations are. Second step: Transforming this raw sound matter through audio-digital processing and noting the time during which it becomes something else, during which it does not alter anymore. Nevertheless, the essence of the initial sound must be preserved; however, the said sound shall not remain identifiable or perceptible as is. I am concerned with the origin: the incarnation of the sound source in time. My fundamental concern, when I manipulate sounds, is that the essence of the sound source, its warmth, its fluidity, its viscosity, its precision and its fragility, remain perceptible. Third step: The harmonization of sounds: a slow and long work of editing and mixing. I start by choosing a frame sound, a guiding sound which calls for another sound, and another, and another and so on. Assemblage is made through improvisation or according to specific editing rules. I weave the treated sounds and the raw sounds together and I delicately play on contrasts. My compositions are evocative and narrative sound landscapes. They are landscapes because they are not narrative; they are not stories with a beginning, a middle part or an end. They always propose a space, a place, a state, a sensation.'' --Myléna Bergeron

Catalog #:
ORAL 015CD
"AUN is Martin Dumais, who has been one of the figureheads of the Montreal electronic scene since its genesis. His Hautec label produced most of the first releases of early leaders in the current local scene: Akufen (with whom he recorded the 1996 album
Juicebox
), Deadbeat, Champion. The AUN project is a return to his first love -- deep, melodic lush drones and sometimes harsh angular electro-ambient textures. While in its own personal space, AUN's
Mule
album sits at the side of the tonal work of Phill Niblock, with an embedded and stark penchant for the early industrialists, and echoes experimental avant guitar artists, juxtaposed to melodic timbres, chiming beauty and desolation uncommon of most drone and noise recordings. Produced with both digital and analog hardware, guitar and acoustic recordings, this rich and provocative music will be performed live to ensure maximum perspective."

ORAL 016CD
Another set of classic archival recordings on this label, a la their previous Monotron CDs; the material on this is released forthe first time. "Sonde is a group of Montreal electroacoustic composers and performers. Their compositions were generally conceived for live performance on original sound sculptures. Through meditative improvisation, the group's aim was to produce new music with sounds revealed by electroacoustic amplification and transformation. Very active from 1976 to 1986, the members of the group included Andrew Culver, Charles de Mestral, Pierre Dostie, Chris Howard, Robin Minard, Michael O'Neill and Linda Pavelka. This CD is the second release ever of Sonde, the previous one being
Sonde en Concert
, edited in 1978 by Music Gallery Editions. This CD is thus quite important, bringing to light part of the group's archives. Optimized with today's sound tools, all these recordings deal with waves of different kinds, sound waves, of course, but also organic and brain waves. The live concert recordings of these pieces, with the exception of 'Acier Bien Trempé (électronique),' were broadcast by CBC-Montreal approximately in 1984 at the request of the producer Gilles Poirier, hence another of the meanings of the expression,
En Ondes

Price:

Catalog #:
ORAL 017CD
"Somewhere between psychedelia, techno, electroacoustics, and post-rock,
Suicide Prevention
is the product of a 14 year-old pact of music or death. Like a duet with the past, the record was motivated by an ineffable will to live. It is made up of a series of propositions for reasons to act. Though musically eclectic, the album meticulously weaves a coherent symbolic gesture. Filled with rich textures, warm and noisy acoustic recordings, complex synthetic algorithms, and haunting nostalgic melodies, this album addresses the organic sensibility of the listener."

"Following the release of the
Mule
album for Oral records, AUN pulled out his stringed instruments and dusted them off for a series of concerts and new recordings, bringing to life the dark and brooding
Blackhorse
album and its more luminous companion CD
Whitehorse
. Echoes of an adolescent past, nurtured to the sound of Swans, Ennio Morricone, Zoviet France and some dirty shoegazing came to the forefront, even including a 1990 squealing guitar solo in the track 'Horsemen.'
Blackhorse
is a raw, forward-thinking, highly musical album, firmly based in his DIY, no holds barred past. AUN serves as an experimental interpretation of Martin Dumais' music; where brutality, the dark, the beautiful and the melodic come together with engaging results. 'Ambient' is often used to describe the sound of AUN, but the music is not intended to function as background, yielding physical response to the listeners."

"This CD is the re-edition of an LP made by Music Gallery Editions in 1978. It is (still) dedicated to the composer Mario Bertoncini who was the band main inspiration at the start for Sonde, a Quebec band active from 1976 to 1986. For most of the tracks in this recording the band was Andrew Culver, Keith Daniel, Charles de Mestral, Pierre Dostie, Chris Howard and Linda Pavelka. The notes on the back of the original cover mentioned: 'Live concert improvisations. Some of the pieces are played on new sound sources designed and constructed by members of the group. Others use traditional sources in a new context. Occasional use of electronic sound modification techniques.'"

BONNIER, BERNARD
Title:
Casse-tête
Label:
ORAL (CANADA)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
ORAL 023CD
"This reissue brings to listeners of concrete and electro-acoustic musics and to all those with deep ears a fleuron of Canadian auto production. It enlightens the exemplary work of composer Bernard Bonnier, born in Montreal in 1952, who died in 1994 in Lévis, Québec, at the early age of 41 years. Bernard Bonnier had a good time, literally, when he accomplished this atypical and cheerful disc.
Casse-tête
is a bizarre and enjoyable music world conceived with various percussions and electronic instruments. In 1984, the year of its release, five years after its creation, it appeared as quite a foolish record. It may still remain like that today. As some of his contemporaries -- Robert Moog, Jean-Jacques Perrey or Raymond Scott -- Bernard Bonnier produced strange and funny sounds out of computers and synthesizers in his Saint-Jean Chrysostôme's studio, Amaryllis. Following the steps of Pierre Henry with whom he collaborated from 1970 until 1975 -- he collaborates on
Cortical Art 3
-- the composer explores and dares. He composes songs which wobble between the seriousness of his musique concrete education and the playful exploration of the existent possibilities of the musics of his time. Blending field recordings, mid '70s Quebec Jerk, powerful sense of 'dance' music, extra humor and auto derision, he defines his musical language, unique and powerful. The impact of such a hybrid work remains strong for the curious minds despite the passing years. Forgotten by the most, his death in a young age not helping to build his notability, Bernard Bonnier however gave to the world one of Canada's most brilliant exploratory records,
Casse-tête
. For those who enjoy: Pierre Henry, Luc Ferrari, Christian Clozier, Jacques Lejeune, Perrey & Kingsley, Jean-Pierre Massiera, Cluster, Felix Kubin, Patrick Catani, Ergo Phizmiz, Shazam."
