PCD 72001CD
"As the '70s dawned and Motown relocated to the West Coast, the era of their honey-toned '60s girl groups came to a resounding halt. The Sisters Love were the antithesis of the traditional Motown group and came to the label from A&M, armed with a lot of funk, sass and attitude. Paired with some of Motown's finest writers and producers, Hal Davis, Gloria Jones, Pamela Sawyer, Paul Riser and Willie Hutch, they got off to a rousing start with the gritty 'Mr. Fix-It Man' and went into high gear for the UK only release 'I'm Learning To Trust My Man'. Motown had them playing arenas with The Jackson Five (probably not their smartest move!), issued the odd single and scheduled more but Sisters Love's anticipated breakthrough didn't happen. Later on New York DJ Danny Krivit pressed up an extended eight-minute re-edit of 'Give Me Your Love', an old B-side from a 1973 single! That song was somewhat of an underground classic but the Krivit mix brought in a whole new legion of fans amongst the rare groove crowd, both in the US and the UK. Sisters Love had long been rumoured to have recorded a complete album for the Motown subsidiary MoWest. Reel Music/P&C Records combed the vaults with Motown's help and the result is the original 10 cut album (tracks 1-10), plus five bonus cuts, two of which are previously unreleased. Although Gwen Berry passed away some years ago, the other three members of the group, Jeanie Long, Lillie Fort and Vermettya Royster, have all been actively involved in this release." Also includes a 20-page booklet.

MCCRAE, GWEN
Title:
Lay It On Me
Label:
P&C RECORDS/REEL MUSIC
Format:
CD
Price:
$16.00
Catalog #:
PCD 72002CD
"Gwen McCrae has consistently been making great records since the late '60s, debuting on Columbia with her first R&B hit 'Lead Me On'. She moved to Cat Records and scored big with 'Rockin' Chair', the oft-sampled '90% Of Me Is You' and 'Damn Right It's Good'. A move to Atlantic where she was personally signed by the legendary Ahmet Ertegun brought such classics as 'Keep The Fire Burning', 'Funky Sensation' and 'All This Love That I'm Giving'. Gwen's roots lie in deep and southern soul and this collection of 11 classics from the Columbia vaults brings together her five singles for the label, plus one unreleased gem in Clarence Reid's 'Lovin' In The Lay-A-Way'. Originally recorded between 1970 and 1972, they were released at a time when Gwen was pretty much one of the only African Americans on the Columbia label and before the company became a powerhouse for R&B with major hits on PIR and Epic Records.
Lay It On Me
is classic soul at its best. Much of it was recorded at American Group Studios and features the Memphis Horns on many tracks." Includes a 16-page full-color booklet with essay and rare photos.

REYNOLDS, JEANNIE
Title:
Cherries, Bananas & Other Fine Things
Label:
P&C RECORDS/REEL MUSIC
Format:
CD
Price:
$16.00
Catalog #:
PCD 72003CD
"The legacy of Jeannie Reynolds is more than just her Chicago steppers classic 'The Fruit Song'. With a voice that could heat ice and melt hearts, Jeannie Reynolds pulled from the depths of her soul and infused her songs with a hard-won truth. Her 1976 debut album showcased the capricious quality of her voice and how effortlessly she adapted it to each song's theme (usually, heartbreak or loneliness). At the turn of a phrase, her voice's jagged edges could connote vulnerability and then morph into a combustible ball of funk. 'The Phone's Been Jumping All Day' was her biggest hit and was surprisingly left off original album release. That situation is rectified here with its inclusion and the addition of three more bonus tracks. Deep soul lovers will have a field day with tracks such as 'The Feeling Ain't There' and 'I've Still Got My Pride' whilst funksters will appreciate the solid 'I Come Here To Party'. A classic slice of '70s soul." 16-page color booklet with liner notes and rare photos.

Making Music
Label:
P&C RECORDS/REEL MUSIC
Format:
CD
Price:
$16.00
Catalog #:
PCD 72004CD
"After the demise of Sussex Records, Bill Withers jumped ship to the behemoth that was Columbia Records. On
Making Music
, the sound is a little more smoothed out, yet still retains that warm soul feeling for which he is best known. The album includes the hit singles 'I Wish You Well' and 'Make Love To Your Mind'. Other than the two singles, 'Hello Like Before' is probably the most well known track, but there are many other gems within this ten tracker which benefits from string and horn arrangements by Motown legend Paul Riser. The album features a who's who of great musicians and singers including David Walker, Ray Parker Jr., Melvin 'Wah Wah' Ragin, bassist James Jamerson, Ernie Watts and Ralph MacDonald." Originally released in 1976. Paste-on mini-gatefold sleeve packaging with OBI.

Leroy Burgess, Stuart Bascombe and Russell Patterson were Black Ivory, an exceptional and occasionally brilliant soul group from Harlem that recorded throughout the '70s and returned sporadically during the decades following
" -- Andy Kellman (All Music Guide).
"The band first came to prominence in 1972 with their first single 'Don't Turn Around', released on the indie Today label and which made #13 on the R&B charts. After two albums with Today, the band signed to Buddah Records for
Feel It
, an album described by music critic Andrew Hamilton as 'ranking as good or better than the previous two.' With help from such luminaries as Patrick Adams and ace arranger Tony Camillo, the album is heavy on the band's trademark ballads with cuts such as 'Your Eyes Say Goodbye' and 'Warm Inside' along with probably one of their best ever songs 'Will We Ever Come Together.'"

CRAWFORD, CAROLINE
Title:
My Name Is Caroline
Label:
P&C RECORDS/REEL MUSIC
Format:
CD
Price:
$16.00
Catalog #:
PCD 72006CD
"Caroline's Crawford's career first began at the age of 15 on Motown Records where she recorded loads of songs but released relatively few! She re-surfaced on Philadelphia International in the early '70s with one brilliant single and a completely unreleased album, which stayed in the can as a result of disagreements with Gamble & Huff. An uncompromising singer, she teamed up with Hamilton Bohannon and sang background on his hits 'South African Man', 'Foot Stomping' Man' and 'Summertime Groove'. Bohannon wrote, produced, arranged and directed the seven cuts. All Music Guide's Andrew Hamilton writes: 'His patented rhythmic, shuffling sound interspersed with some ballads make this an extension of his 'Summertime Groove' album which featured Crawford's vibrant vocals. This is good. Mercury's neglect kept this album from improving their bottom line or Crawford's career, in spite of infectious ditties like 'Tell Me You'll Wait' 'Coming On Strong,' and 'Caroline Breakdown'. A classic soul album from a very underrated singer!!" Packaged in a mini-LP style cover in a dust sleeve with obi strip.

WASHINGTON, ELLA
Title:
Ella Washington
Label:
P&C RECORDS/REEL MUSIC
Format:
CD
Price:
$16.00
Catalog #:
PCD 72007CD
"
Ella Washington
is one of those rare '60s soul albums which is all classics and no filler. This material was recorded and produced by legendary DJ/producer John 'JR' Richbourg and originally released on his Sound Stage 7 label. Deep and southern soul aficionados rate Ella as one of the best singers of the genre with over half the songs on this collection being strong ballads which showcase her raw and emotive style. She has the unique ability to pull everything out of a lyric and literally 'lives' the songs she sings. From the heartaches of her revival of the country classic 'He Called Me Baby' to the desperation of 'Doing The Best I Can', this is true southern soul at its finest."

Price:
$16.00
Catalog #:
PCD 72009CD
"
'Warm wonderful soul from Bill - recorded with a bit less of the acoustic folksy sound that graced his Sussex recordings, but still with loads of excellent song writing, and a whole bunch of great piano work in place of the missing guitar.'
(Dusty Groove). Bill's second album for Columbia was a somewhat funkier affair than his debut.
'Here Withers returns to the simple ways of his past, working five or six musicians for the kind of hard groove that doesn't have many parallels in black music these days.'
(Robert Christgau). Musicians include Larry 'Fatback' Tolbert on drums, Dorothy Ashby (harp), Melvin Dunlap (bass), Benorce Blackmon (guitar) and Jerry Knight (bass)." Originally released in 1976. Paste-on mini-gatefold style packaging with OBI.

PCD 72010CD
"The Ebonys were formed in 1969 and hailed from Camden, New Jersey. Discovered by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, they recorded extensively for Philadelphia International, although only releasing one album. Their biggest Philadelphia International hits were 'You're The Reason Why' (#10 R&B) and 'It's Forever,' which made #14 R&B. Their sound was somewhat Dells-based with baritone lead with answering second falsetto lead. A new female vocalist in Suzette Dorsey was added for their Buddah debut
Sing About Life
. Although this Tony Camillo produced album did not enjoy commercial success, it is full of the classic heavy soul wailing that was the group's signature sound.
Sing About Life
makes its worldwide CD debut on P&C and is remastered from the original first generation analog tapes."

KOOL & THE GANG
Title:
Kool & The Gang
Label:
P&C RECORDS/REEL MUSIC
Format:
CD
Price:
$16.00
Catalog #:
PCD 72015CD
"Kool & The Gang's debut album was a surprise hit when first released in 1969, reaching #43 on Billboard's R&B chart. It spawned three hit singles in 'Kool & The Gang' (# 19, R&B), 'The Gang's Back Again' (#37) and 'Let The Music Take Your Mind (#19). Some 32 years after its initial release, the album is probably better known in 2012, thanks to three of its tracks being sampled countless times by hip-hop producers."

LUNDY, PAT
Title:
Only Love Spoken Here
Label:
P&C RECORDS/REEL MUSIC
Format:
CD
Price:
$16.00
Catalog #:
PCD 72017CD
"For a singer with such an incredible voice, almost next to nothing is known about the late Pat Lundy who recorded for a mixed bag of labels for almost two decades, ending in the late '70s. After leaving girl group The Symbols, she made 45s for Heidi and Deluxe before signing with Columbia which at that time was still looking for great R&B vocalists as 'replacements' for Aretha Franklin, but equally clueless as to what to do with them. With six Columbia singles and one LP under her belt, Pat Lundy signed with RCA, another company renowned for finding great black talent but being less than stellar in marketing it!! However, with Pat and producer Buddy Scott at the helm, they managed to make an incredible and very soulful R&B album, almost in spite of themselves and the little promotion it was given upon release. When legendary producer and Now Again Records owner, Eothen Alapatt walks past your office and exclaims, 'You have this Pat Lundy album?' and is even more shocked when you say you're re-releasing it, you know you've risen to the heights of a crate-digger's paradise. It's like the ultimate endorsement of good taste!"

LOVE, PEACE & HAPPINESS
Title:
Here 'Tis
Label:
P&C RECORDS/REEL MUSIC
Format:
CD
Price:
$16.00
Catalog #:
PCD 72019CD
"Powerhouse R&B vocal trio Love, Peace & Happiness did not get the love they deserved when their music was released on RCA at the top of the `70s - just as the company began promoting Black Music - but evidence of their greatness lives on as heard on this, their second and final album,
Here `Tis
(via Reel Music / P&C Records), now available on CD for the first time ever. When Muskegon, Michigan-raised brothers Melvin and Leslie Wilson moved to Detroit in the late `60s, they had no clue they would meet latter-days Marvelettes member Ann Bogan in church and begin a soulful gospel-fueled association - one that eventually led them to The New Birth in which Leslie would blossom into its star lead singer. Working together as
Love, Peace & Happiness
under veteran producer Harvey Fuqua, the threesome waxed two albums of collard greens and cornbread soul including electrifying covers of Gladys Knight's 'I Don't Want To Do Wrong' and Wilson Pickett's 'Don't Knock My Love.'"

NEW BIRTH, THE
Title:
The New Birth
Label:
P&C RECORDS/REEL MUSIC
Format:
CD
Price:
$16.00
Catalog #:
PCD 72020CD
"Reel Music (P & C Records) digs deep into the R&B/funk crates to bring forth - for the first time on CD - the very first 1970 RCA album by Louisville, Kentucky's The New Birth. From the nude family portrait on the cover to the raw, broad-stroke 10 songs inside, this is the rarest, most coveted album by The New Birth, as it boldly began. Though just one album away from slimming down to the 12-member hit machine most funkateers remember, this original 17-piece assemblage packed a show-stopping soul wallop that could swing from heavy backbeat flips of pop standards like 'It's You or No One' (the group's very first single) to a red hot rave-up of Rufus Thomas' 'Do the Funky Chicken.'"
