"The inspiration for Ludovico Einaudi's I Giorni was a 12th-century folk song from Mali about a hippopotamus who was cherished by the residents of a nearby village but killed by a hunter. 'The song,' writes Einaudi in his succinct liner note, 'is sung as a lament for the death of a king or a great person or for the loss of a loved one.' The result is a tender & introspective set of fourteen piano pieces. This work was written after hearing the kora playing o f Toumani Diabate while traveling in Mali."

However, the pianist and composer stretches the boundaries of orthodox definitions of the genre and creates music that defies easy categorization. In 2006, Einaudi toured Europe with the popular German electronica artists Robert & Ronald Lippok. These artists' exceptional improvisatory collaboration is what makes Cloudland such an exceptional recording. The album title comes from a paradise-like retreat mentioned in Amos Tutuola's novel The Palm-Wine Drinkard. This is not the first effort to merge electronics with classical music. Carsten Nicolai worked with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Carl Craig and Moritz von Oswald injected Ravel's 'Bolero' with a techno twist. "Ludovico Einaudi is a minimalist Italian composer, often associated with film music, who has enlivened his style with electronic effects drawn from the worlds of techno and ambient music. The combination has proven commercially potent in Europe, and given the attraction of Steve Reich and the other minimalists among aficionados of electronic music on the pop side, it is surprising more composers haven't explored the combination. Live in Berlin mostly draws on material from Einaudi's album Divenire, which is scored for piano and orchestra. The album shows that this composer's studio-oriented sound can be effectively transferred to a live setting. The music, with its waves of arpeggiated piano chords, evokes the sparse structures of early minimalism. However its romantic lyricism, combined with the rich sonic textures and firm rhythmic backbone of the electronics, creates a mood and style that are unique and powerfully compelling."
